PRESCHOOL by Cindy Morales NEWSLETTER MARCH Both the Preschool and Elementary sections of Canadian school really enjoyed preparing for the Canadian Fest. Parents and children had a wonderful time in creating the wonderful paintings inspired by Jackson Pollock, that were made with much love, happiness, cooperation, and of course learning! For over three week, we had many volunteer parents visiting our school and working with children in this activity. We would like to give special thanks to our wonderful School Family Committee for all their hard work, creativity, support and amazing attitude during this entire process. Congratulations!

During the Month of February, we celebrated Kindness Week, where students learned about what it means to Be Kind. Our children learned to share our positive feelings and thoughts with others and they also talked about the importance of love, sharing, giving, tolerance, cooperation, loving and friendship. Some of the activities students and staff were engaged in were: ¨Have you filled your bucket today? ¨, Canadian School Balloon sale, creating our Canadian School Kindness Tree, sharing smiles and positive thoughts, sharing lunch with peers, helping other classrooms in cleaning up after lunch time, reading stories, making lemonade and sharing with others, writing in their journals about friends and being kind, exchanging treats, cards and friendly messages… and even dressing up as clowns and making our school family smile!

[3]

As you can see, Kindness Week was filled with many moments of pride and accomplishment as we celebrated one another with kind words, gestures, and small tokens of appreciation and of course, LOVE. and we did it all, the Canadian School Way!

Junior Kinder E was the class in charge of talking to children and preparing a presentation about Mexican Flag Day during our monthly Flag Ceremony. JKE students did a wonderful job at presenting the different types of Mexican Flags that have existed in the past. They also did a representation of the habit Think Win-Win. Congrats Junior Kinder E team!

Parenting tip: The importance of reading and rhyming “Sharing books is an ideal time for having conversations. It is a quiet, cozy time with something to look at and talk about– an experience to share” (Ayala Manolson It Takes Two to Talk) Make time in your schedule to read with your child. It is okay to read a favorite book over and over again. Change how you read books by using different voices, or leaving out words and see if they will fill them in, even try changing the words to include them and your family in the story. Share rhymes and songs with your child everyday also. “If children know eight nursery rhymes by the age of four years old, they are usually the best readers by the time they are eight. From rhymes, children learn words, sentences, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, all of which they’ll find later in the books they read “(Mem Fox, Reading Magic, 2001) Take regular trips to the library to get new books to explore!

How to develop kindness in your child Learning empathy is one of the most valuable lessons for children There are many small day to day things that parents can do to nurture their children into becoming naturally kind. It is very important to be aware that hugging, playing, listening, reading bed time stories, etc are a very good starting point for parents to help their children develop into good human beings. Once you have established a good and close relationship with your child it automatically becomes easier to teach your child to be kind and giving more actively. You can start by spending time alone with your child. Let him/her know that you are there to guide them every step of the way and that they should not fear you. Ask them about their daily activities, even if you already know what they did every minute of the day as this would show that you have a genuine interest in their lives.

The best way to teach your child to be kind to others is by being kind yourself. Whatever parents do, children tend to pick them up as they see their parents as their role model in their early life. Teach your child small kind things like saying ‘thank you’ and ‘your welcome’ in appropriate s i t u a t i o n s . Tr y d o i n g g r o u p activities like baking a cake and taking it over to an elderly in the family. If you have more than one child then you already have a great base to start on to teach your child the art of sharing. Sharing teaches a child to be less selfish and more kind, giving and thoughtful. Just remember that they are your children and that they are dependent on you from the day they are born. They will not turn into adults over a second. It will take them years to reach that point and till they do, you have a lot of grooming and teaching to do. Teach them from the beginning and they will do you proud.

Library News February

We have been very busy this month! During the first week we read a short story titled ¨The Carrot Seed ¨ written by Ruth Krauss. It´s a story about a little boy who truly wants to plant a carrot seed. Throughout the story he is told by his mother, brother, and father that it would never grow. One day a giant carrot finally grows thanks to his hard work and dedication. We were able to make a connection with our 7 Habits -Begin With the End in Mind.

• For Valentine´s Day we read books about Hugs, Love, and Friendship. It was after these stories where students were presented with a blank Valentine to decorate and prompted to give away to someone they loved or cared about.
 Library Hours Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Parents Friday´s 1:00 am - 3:00 pm

• We practiced the gift of giving from the heart. To view these acts of kindness was truly amazing! I personally felt the love in their hearts!

Chinese New Year! Week three has been fun reading stories about this holiday. It´s been very satisfying that students begin to see the many ways the Chinese celebrate the New Year. One week we read a book and then the next time I was able to share 3 videos of the actual celebrations and parades from around the world. Students were very interested in seeing the real Dragon Dancers in action. It was especially nice for some of the groups to learn the phrase “Gung hay fat choy ” in Cantonese as Ms. Alvina Tsui was there first hand to teach some groups the exact pronunciation. Many were encouraged to greet her during the day as well. It is my intention that students learn about other cultures and they grow to be accepting of people who are different than themselves. [11]
