OSU-Tulsa President’s Outstanding Research Award 2025 recipient
Dr. Joanna Shadlow, teaching professor of psychology in the OSU College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of the 2025 OSU-Tulsa President’s Outstanding Teaching Award. Based at OSU-Tulsa, she teaches a wide range of psychology courses and is known for connecting with the campus’s diverse student population.
Shadlow helps students see psychology not just as an academic subject, but as an applied field that shapes individual and community well-being. She encourages students to explore meaningful career paths and think critically about cultural identity, interpersonal dynamics and the impact of mental health. She also serves as faculty advisor for the OSU-Tulsa Psychology Club, supporting student engagement outside the classroom.
Her impact is reflected in consistently high course evaluations, including perfect “Excellent Teacher” ratings in several classes last year and strong average scores across the board. Students frequently describe her as a favorite instructor, praising her engaging style and the valuable learning they gain from her courses.
Dr. Bin Liang, professor of sociology in the OSU College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of the 2025 OSU-Tulsa President’s Outstanding Research Award. His research focuses on globalization and its impact on the Chinese legal system, crime and deviance in China and comparative studies in criminology and criminal justice.
Since coming to OSU-Tulsa in 2003, Liang has built a substantial and influential body of work. He has authored or co-authored five scholarly books, edited two additional volumes and produced two peer-reviewed special issues, with two more currently in progress. His publication record also includes 52 peer-reviewed journal articles, 11 book chapters and numerous other scholarly contributions. Liang is a frequent presenter at both national and international conferences, where he shares his research with the global academic community.
As the senior sociology faculty member at OSU-Tulsa, Liang is described by colleagues as an outstanding role model for junior faculty. Working in collaboration with others in his department, he led a community-engaged research study on social control and re-entry in Oklahoma for Tulsa’s Operation Hope Prison Ministry. He also helped found the Association of Chinese Criminology and Criminal Justice (ACCCJ) in the United States in 2010 and served as its president from 2020 to 2022.
