riety that suppliers and landlords in capitals across the world keep them at bay. There are so many sordid tales to recall about people hiding under the cloak of diploma c immunity.Incontradis nc on, when Nigeria was s ll func oning and focused on the a ainment of sustainable development in the nineteen six es, the Agent General represen ng a regional government in London was a sub-ambassador and defacto Minister of Exports of a regional government. It was a hard mul tasking role loca ng, finding and retaining export markets for the agriculture produce of the region. The job was back breaking and not for the faint of heart. The efficacy of the process can s ll be seen today; Nigeria House in London today was actually the office of the Agent General of the Western Region un l 1966 and the irresponsible abroga on of the 1963 constu on.Allof the above obviously is of no interest to Olamilekan and co who are brought up in a different poli cal economy which is based not on the revenue produc on framework of the 1960 and the 1963 cons tu ons otherwise referred to as “you eat what you kill”, but on rent collec on, “alloca on”, sharing and assorted parasi c ac vi Thises.is the framework in which the members of the current senate were induced into and nothing will change their mindset, no turkey votes for an early Christmas.Thenext government will have no such leeway. Hard decisions will have to be made by a new government about the costs of the machinery of the government, the so-called fuel and other subsidies etc. Olamilekan and the present senate will not be let off about the glaring derelic on of duty and their cavalier a tude to their oversight func on. To be fair, the senate are oblivious about the verdict of history.
“It is to be expected that the Chambers of Commerce everywhere offer the same format and platform at the state level to those interesting for the governorship elections”
The jury is s ll out on the presenta on to the LCCI on Tuesday by former Vice President A ku Abubakar. His posi on, lot of it commonsensical and sensible, is worthy of considera on even of implementa on, nevertheless the perennial ques on comes up “where is the beef?”.Alhaji A ku advocates “a handshake with the private sector”, this is welcome; for a future government overburdened with debt repayments must rely on the private sector, either as standalone contributors to economic growth or in crea ve partnerships with the public sector.
The Chairman of the Senate commi ee on Finance, Sen. Olamilekan Adeola, has suggested scrapping them. Nobody is giving him any sort of plaudit for this intent since even the gullible know that he doesn’t mean what he is saying.

As a body, the Senate is aware of the existence of the report of the Oronsaye Commi ee on the costs of the machinery of the government. Obviously, they need a soundbite to amuse the electorate that they are fit for purpose.Thecontradic on is that the same set of people who now want to abolish MDAs, have in the life of the present senate, passed scores of bills establishing more bureaucracies. It is u erly ludicrous that the irony is lost on them. We should remind them and ask for an explana on. Furthermore, they have not deemed it fit to do a costs and benefits appraisal of our maintenance of about 115 foreign missions in hard currency. What are the opportunity costs of the foreign missions?

For example, Alhaji A ku’s proposal for a $20 billion infrastructure fund is to be supported. The country clearly needs a s mulus. The issue is how will the funds be raised and from where? ITH a poten ally gamechanging pivotal presidenal elec on ahead, we give kudos to the Lagos Chamber of Commerce (LCCI) and Industry for a very worthwhile and urgently needed inia ve. We hope that other organs of civil society follow suit.
Not surprising for a contestant, Alhaji A ku is hesitant about taking on the excrucia ngly debilitating costs of the machinery in the government. Whoever will have to face dealing with the bugbears that become a strangula ng albatross on any hope of an economic reboot. Same thing goes for mul ple exchange rates as well as the contenous issue of even defining what a subsidy is, whether or not it exists and what is to be done. The next president, on so many fronts, can no longer postpone taking what will definitely be not very palatable decisions and the poli cal establishment must prepare the minds of the public now as to the bumpy ride ahead.
A er a lackluster performance, the Nigerian aroused from slumber or perhaps a Rip Van Winkle trance has no ced that the myriad of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are not adding that much if any value to the economy and something should be done about it.
Prepara on is key in naviga ng stormy weather and turbulent seas. A cri cism of the PDP, the largest opposi on party, is that it has not as a party with elec ons in the offing, posi oned itself as a governmentin - wai ng which is what should be the norm in plural society.

The costs are befuddling because Nigeria outside of crude oil is not expor ng anything worth talking about. This brings up the issue of what the missions actually contribute to the economy. True, leadership indiscipline spreads disorder down the followership ranks and files but the solu on is two-ways: it can either be corrected from leadership downwards or from followership upwards. Not correc ng it will con nually leave us in trials and tribula ons to live through and hand over to our children. Individuals have the capacity to demonstrate powerful examples of discipline that can reverberate beyond an organisa on and become a change mantra. No one can forget that the Spartan discipline of President Mohammadu Buhari, for many years lived before his presiden al aspira ons, became the eventual Joker for his triumph a er several a empts. Today’s stories would not change that

the more our inability to punish it! When indiscipline is carried to areas of public health and na onal security, of course, everyone can now see that unless we have a rethink and make a change, we are speeding towards self-destrucon. For the simplest instance, how else would we account for the inability of educated adults especially, to follow basic COVID-19 protocols during the pandemic lockdowns, even if the uneducated live in senseless denial?
How far any associa on goes in fulfilling its aims and objec ves depends to a large extent how disciplined it is. It is a func on of how selfdisciplined its members are or how well they are disciplined and amenable to discipline. It is not a big grammar. An orderly and prosperous organisa on must be disciplined. Its members must, on their own, abide by the rules and regula ons of the associa on, and those who don’t must ALWAYS be made to pay the fine and face the music EVERY TIME they break the rules.Example, they say, is greater than precept.

The ke le calling the pot black doesn’t always advance the cause of organisa onal discipline, and one essen al need for self-discipline is “amojukuro;” that is, self-sacrifice and restraint, a large heart without greed. HE Republic of Rwanda is in Central Africa, bordered by Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, and Democra c Republic of Congo. It was separated from Burundi and gained independence on 1st July, 1962. Rwanda with its capital in Kigali is mainly divided into two main groups – The Hutu who are tradi onally farmers and The Tutsi who are ca le pastoralists. There is a third group - The Pygmy Twa - who are hunters and po ers. Although the official language is Rundi, it is a mul lingual country where Kinyarwanda, French and English languages are widely spoken. About 65% of Rwandans are Chris ans, 5% Moslem and ¼ Tradi onalists. Its total land area is 26,340km Square.Between 1st October 1990 and 18th July 1994, there was a large scale civil war in Rwanda between Rwanda Armed Forces (represen ng the government) and rebels - Patrio c Front - caused by outstanding unresolved disputes between the Hutu and Tutsi groups, where hundreds of thousands Tutsi and moderate Hutus were killed. At the end of this devasta ng war, Rwanda Patrio c Front (RPF) assumed control with Paul Kagame as de facto leader. He served as Vice President from 1994 and became President in Notwithstanding2000.
From punctuality, regular a endance at mee ngs and payment of dues, to seeking and accep ng responsibili es and assignments, a self-disciplined leader sets an example for members to follow, making sure that appropriate penal es are paid by members every me rules are violated. Fairness and jus ce must be apparent at all mes in order to ins l orderliness, which is a vital condi on for growth and development. An organisa on where might is right, wealth is right, and favours and privileges are dispensed without pa ern other than sec onal loyalty has no future. Selec ve punishment and differing sentences for same offence cannot be. The seeds of indiscipline growing within such associa ons will lead it to inevitable doom.
Don’ts.Discipline is simply the prac ce of making people abide by spelt out rules and regulaons and ensuring that members who don’t are punished accordingly. A simple study of our society, at all levels of organisa on, will reveal that the standards of discipline has fallen; and indiscipline - which has become a culture - is at the very root of most of our woes. Once somebody disobeys the rules and does not get punished, the door to disorder is opened; and once unpunished disobedience becomes frequent, the door is wide opened to anarchy.
