Application Round

Applicants will be invited to take part in an application process . Applicants will complete an assessment survey and return before the advertised deadline. We expect to start this application round in May of next year

NB. The survey will ask whether groups have appointed someone to work directly with BCL. There people will be our climate leaders (passionate environmental souls) and will be the designated contact for communication, data collection and to lead the way during the project’s timeline.

BCL staff, upon receiving back forms, will score and select a shortlist of 10 groups for our Carbon footprinting strand (strand 1).

These 10 groups will progress to a Qualitative review round, where staff will  discuss and further review group applications, in order to choose the final 5 groups for the first year Carbon footprinting strand.

This application process will be repeated yearly with the final round in 2027.

Remaining groups will be invited to take part in our Group actions (Strand 2) or Training (Strand 3), or be Signposted to other services, which we feel will most benefit them.

All applicants will have the chance to engage in some form of training.

.

• Participants attend an initial meeting, and with guidance, undertake a detailed carbon footprint of their building and operations and a mini environmental assessment for Biodiversity.

• Groups will be invited to a Carbon Literacy (CL) training course, within which they will obtain the status Carbon Literate*

• The first steps for each group will happen on rotation, some groups will begin with CL training and others will begin with a CF introductory session.  All groups will undertake all steps, just in slightly differing orders. We have laid the project out this way to enable us to work with as many groups as we can. A circular system for a circular future.

• The participants undertaking the CF introductory session will attend a meeting and be introduced to the project and our first steps. We will cover data collection and all the requirements to undertake a CF review.

• Groups will have appointed their Climate leader by now, and this person will take charge of the process and undertake the actual survey, individually or as a group dependant on preference.

• One to one sessions with the appointed Climate leader will be offered with the project manager and project assistant at intervals to ensure participants feel confident in their actions. This can also be offered for groups feeling they need the extra help.

• Once we have completed the CF review, BCL staff will analyse the data. Groups will  then attend a second meeting to discuss further the results and areas of importance.

• This second group meeting will begin the commencement of our Action plan phase and we will decide together on a course of action with a goal of achieving a 25% carbon reduction over 5 years through continued efforts and actions.

• BCL will regularly review action plans and engage with the process and undertake annual CF reviews to evaluate and report to the National Lottery.

• We hope to have a visual carbon counter available for groups to follow along and build enthusiasm, in addition to a forum to link groups together.

• At further project stages we hope to begin a buddying up system, allowing further engagement across a wider range of organisations in Swansea.

Strand 1 – The BIG Footprint Leap

Strand 2 – BIG Leap Action Plans

• Participants joining this strand will attend an initial group meeting to discuss Carbon Leap action plans.

• Groups will be offered to work through 3 Tiers of actions gradually and at whichever pace best suits them.

• Tier 1 will consist of easier to implement actions like changing to LED bulbs, attending recycle cafes and joining tool sharing clubs.

• Tier 2 will include slightly more adventurous actions, such as building insulation, double glazing and water harvesting, actions which will potentially require funding assistance

• Tier 3 will be tackling the bigger hurdles, such as  implementing renewable energy measures and under floor/air pumps instalment which will almost certainly require direction to funding assistance and more detailed analysis, involving external consultants and guidance.

• The main thing is that we choose goals which are achievable, and we stick to our action plans. Gradually each month we will add more actions, with the hope of initiating the process of instilling life-long behavioural changes, for the good of us all.

• There have been many findings recently, that show that in fact, the climate crisis has helped many communities achieve things which they didn’t realise would even benefit the planet. A lot of the actions mean communities will have better access to funding and even the ability to bring in funds for further actions (eg installing solar pv and utilising feed in to grid/community energy hubs etc). This allows communities to become more cohesive and achieve goals which benefit the whole community, as well as the environment.

• Groups will meet monthly with the project team to review current status of action plans and set new targets.

• This will be an opportunity to make changes to plans, get extra guidance and build rapport with one another.

Strand 3 – BIG Training Leap

Our training strand is still currently being developed. Our plan is to first analyse what is most wanted within the overall Swansea community and fit ourselves with those needs. We hope to offer a range of training from Biodiversity based training through to practical training like installing Solar PV and Climate communication sessions. We will send a survey out soon with suggestions and ask for your votes to decide what you would most like to learn.

We will also be hunting out keen climate leaders!.

A climate leader refers to someone who is willing to take that extra step towards a solution. We will provide support and training to those keen to become a climate champion in Swansea.

Carbon Literacy Course

This course is 8 hours spread over 4 sessions. Two half days or 4 x 2 hr sessions.

One training course we will offer will be a Carbon Literacy course in collaboration with The Carbon Literacy Trust. This will mean participants achieve Carbon Literate certification/status*.

We hope to take you on a journey from the beginning and the anthropogenic era, to the burning of fossil fuels, the biodiversity crisis, and all the science behind it, right through to the solutions like sustainable development, urban greening and carbon reduction measures.

We want you to leave our course feeling empowered to make the behavioural change required for the planet to meet its 1.5 degree requirement, in order to ensure species survival and ecosystem equilibrium.

The science indicates we are on the edge of the 6th Mass extinction, and it shows more and more clearly year by year with the burning forests and warming oceans.

*Participants will be responsible individually for the final CL certification. Participants must agree to undertake 2 carbon reduction pledges and fill in a commitment form, in order to receive certification directly via The Carbon Literacy Trust. There may be a small surcharge for certificates but this will be considered

Now is the time to act and this project aims to support the third sector in making this commitment.

CF Introductory Session

• During this session we will introduce carbon footrpinting

• We will cover the sort of data that will be required and where to find it

• Talk through the workings of the chosen carbon calculator.

• Undertake a mock carbon footprint as a group

• The appointed climate leader will then complete the groups CF and share the results with BCL Project staff.

• One to one sessions will be available for groups needing a little extra support

Group Footprint Review Session

• BCL staff will review and analyse the data provided

• Groups will  attend a group footprint review session to discuss further the results and areas of importance to target in our action plans.

• This second group meeting will begin the commencement of our Action plan phase and we will decide together on a course of action with a goal of achieving a 25% carbon reduction over 5 years through continued efforts and actions.

• These actions will be tailored to your group and we will provide assistance in obtaining the funding and practical expert support needed to implement the chosen actions.

• BCL will provide the group with a Carbon Leap Action plan and steps towards achieving the actions suggested.

• One to one sessions will be available to help with any hurdles that appear and signposting to external organisations who can help you with certain aspects of the process.

Climate Leaders

• We will also be looking for keen climate leaders.

• A climate leader refers to someone who is willing to take that extra step towards a solution and do what they can to support the environment

• We will provide support and training to those keen to become a climate champion in Swansea.

• This will involve engaging in training such as our Carbon Literacy course, engaging with the EC and possibly in time volunteering on the BCL project.
