members have too. We can see what positivity does with the last two wins and with your backing it is important that we keep that going.
Welcome to Ingfield for today’s Pitching In NPL East game with Stockton Town.
It is safe to say we have had a very positive week with two hard fought victories against Wythenshawe in the FA Cup and three valuable points earned at Ashington on Tuesday evening. The Ashington game was notable for an excellent performance both on and off the field as Matt Blackburn took up the mantle of radio commentator for the evening and did an excellent job, I have received several messages complimenting him for his professional commentary. We are proud of our media team, and this shows just why.
The new look squad are starting to show on the field the performances and fight expected of them by the management team and the reason they have been brought to the club.
I have received a lot of messages from supporters over the last few days, and I know other board
Like all sides in the league this bank holiday we have two games in three days so I am sure Grant will be looking to use his squad to its fullest to ensure the side is as fresh as it can be, we’re definitely in a position now where players not selected in the first eleven can come off the bench and make a genuine impression on the game which is a very strong position to be in.
Without looking too far ahead we are back at Ingfield next Saturday as NPL Premier Division side Marske United visit us in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round, this will be an excellent test against higher division opposition and will really show where we are as a club.
The FA Cup, with the prize money on offer, as well as the glory of progressing through the rounds means so much to clubs playing at these early stages. All you can ask for is a home draw, hopefully the magic of the cup will encourage more of the local population to visit Ingfield and cheer the lads on.
Enjoy the game and have a great bank holiday weekend
Towards the end of last week the news broke that we were in the process of experiencing a change at the top of our Club administration following the decision of James Rogers to relinquish his role as Chairman because of family and work commitments. The statement by the Club was released after I had submitted my previous programme notes to the editor Joe Williamson hence the absence of a reaction by me. Obviously it would be completely remiss of me not to comment on such a big change to our administrative structure and so I would like to rectify that situation now.
Firstly we found ourselves in a fortunate situation with James agreeing to continue his involvement with Ossett United and ensure a smooth transition as a member of the Board of Directors thus ensuring continuity and limitless expertise and secondly having a ‘ready-made’ successor in Phil Smith amongst our existing ranks. This isn’t always the case at football clubs as I can testify when I took over the reins as Chairman at Ossett Albion during a period of internal turmoil. Back in the late seventies I agreed to become Chairman at least until the Club could find and appoint somebody
else with more experience. 30 Years later the Club were still looking for that elusive person because people willing and able to take on the responsibility of running a club at our level of the game are not ‘ten-apenny’ and they need to step into the role with their eyes wide open.
I can vouch to the fact that the responsibility does weigh heavily on your shoulders and the workload is way beyond anything you might have imagined prior to stepping into the role and, rather than being a paid job, it usually costs you money as well. There can be no doubt whatsoever that, at the time, James inherited more turmoil here at Ossett United that would have been the case at almost any other club in the land. What I mean by that is well documented! That he steadied the ship and steered us through so many virtually existential problems are major testaments to his decision making within the organisation and will be long remembered when the history of the Club is written. Navigating the problems we faced back at the start were daunting to say the least and James’s skill and foresight in judgement and implementation of solutions to the multitude of problems were instrumental in our very survival. For that we should all be extremely grateful and I am sure from conversations I have had with supporters that we are.
As Chairman it’s not always the
major problems that cause the most grief. Literally the everyday issues, which I can confirm come thick and fast, and which need attention when running a Non-League football club, can become extremely wearing not least when you also hold other major responsibilities at your ‘proper day job’ with Leeds City Council, Leeds United Foundation and commitments to your own family.
I’m sure when looking back on his time as Chairman of Ossett United Football Club James will reflect positively on the number of developments carried out during his tenure. Ground improvements brought about during his time include major projects such as new pitch perimeter barrier, new dugouts, new floodlights and the new dressing room buildings to mention just a few. Seeing such projects come to fruition is very satisfying and that’s a legacy any Chairman would be proud of and rightly so.
I’m pretty sure James wouldn’t have stepped down if he hadn’t have felt confident that the Club would be in safe hands when his successor was appointed. Similarly I think we are all confident that the Club is indeed in safe hands with Phil Smith’s appointment which was unanimously ratified by the Board at their last meeting.
What will the Club look like moving forward under Phil Smith’s stewardship we wonder? If the
accompanying photo is anything to go by his reign could see a very different approach to business during Board Meetings in the future!
May I extend a warm welcome to this afternoon’s visitors Stockton Town who will be our third former Northern League opponents in just four matches. With our record against them of just one win and one draw in our last five meetings they will no doubt provide another stern test of the credentials of our new-look side.
Finally on behalf of all connected with the Club we wish Alex Peterson a full and speedy recovery from his recent injury.
Tuesday evening saw the team win away at Ashington. Following a long journey, the team defended as a unit to protect a 1 goal lead in the second half. As I said at full time, Tuesday was one of our best performances since I took charge and I couldn’t be prouder of the lads.
Good Afternoon and welcome home to Ingfield. Today, we look to build on a positive week for the club and secure a victory over a strong opponent in Stockton Town.
Last weekend, we overcame Wythenshawe thanks to a strong, focused team performance. This, coupled with your support saw us through to First Round Qualifying where we will take on Marske United.
We will give everything to build on a good week. As always, thank you for your continued support. Get behind the lads and enjoy today’s game.
a second clean sheet in a row and our first league win of the campaign.
All eyes turn to todays game where we hope to get 3 wins in a row. It will require a performance like last week and hopefully we can kick the bank holiday weekend off with a win. Ahead of our ‘derby’ game away at Pontefract.
Tuesday night was a fantastic way to get off the mark in the league. Away at Ashington, midweek and a 7:45pm kick off is what nightmares are made of!
It was a game of two halves. The first saw ourselves create lots of chances with some free flowing football. And the second saw us backs to the wall defending for our lives. A solid performance from Joe in net ensured
Thanks again for all your support. It is never taken for granted.

Stockton Town FC was formed in 1979 under its original name, Hartburn Juniors. Although records around that time are sketchy, it would appear the club was formed by Derrick Small who at the time was coaching youngsters from the Hartburn area of Stockton at the local YMCA. The club home colours of yellow/royal shirts & royal shorts established then, remains the same now.
Throughout the eighties and nineties Hartburn Juniors continued to grow and operate as a junior football club, competing in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance. The Club from time to time had various bases around the town but the early years of the new millennium saw a marked change in the Club and a permanent base at Our Lady of St Bedes School on Bishopton Road West, Stockton.
It was felt by the members that the club name didn’t really reflect the area where most players came from. The club had grown and now had players who came from all over Stockton Borough so it was decided to change the name to STOCKTON TOWN FC. There was also a desire to resurrect a senior football team to represent the Town of Stockton and it was felt this would create a great development opportunity for the whole club and provide to achieve this from grass roots through a junior football club was possible.
In April 2008 the Club underwent a massive investment totalling £1.4 million pounds which also saw a partnership with Stockton Borough Council, Stockton 6th Form College and Our Lady & St Bedes School to develop the facilities at the Site, building a new Clubhouse and changing facilities. This development was the springboard for a further expansion for the Club.
The next step was to introduce Open Age Men’s Football to the Club. Stockton Town had proved very successful in producing top quality young players that then from age 16 went on to play for various local non-league teams. The Club decided it wanted to give these youngsters an opportunity to stay within the Club. So in Season 2009/10 Stockton Town using a mix of players from the outgoing and current U18s, some returning ex Juniors and one or two old heads, they entered a team in the Teesside League 2nd Division.
The 1st game in Senior Football was an away fixture at St Marys College, Middlesbrough, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. Having led the League for most of the Season they faded in the Spring to finish 4th. The Club and the Players were keen to progress and the summer of 2010 saw Stockton Town successfully apply for membership of the Wearside League for 2010/11 season. The team struggled in the early part of their first season in the Wearside League, but an impressive run of results after the Christmas/New Year saw them finish a
creditable 10th.
The improvement continued in 2011/12, with a 3rd place finish and a League Cup Final appearance, losing 2-0 to Ryhope CW. In 2012/13 Stockton Town, with a squad made-up mainly of young, local homegrown talent won their first Trophy in senior football clinching the Wearside League Title with a spectacular run-in, winning the final 12 games to overhaul Willington FC in the last game of the season.
The following season a 2nd Wearside League title was won a little easier but brought another Cup Final defeat to Ryhope CW. This heralded the start of a period of domination in the Wearside League for Stockton Town’s young but maturing squad. In 2014/15 the Club completed the clean sweep of League Title, League Cup, Shipowners Cup and Monkwearmouth Cup, a feat achieved only twice before in the history of the League, unbeaten in all competitions the team missed out on a ‘perfect’ season by losing their second last League game disappointingly, away to Prudhoe. The next season saw a 4th consecutive League Title along with the League Cup and Monkwearmouth Cup back in the Bishopton Road Trophy Cabinet. During this period the Club had been working to improve facilities to the required standard to gain promotion to the Northern League and after twice being thwarted at the last minute, promotion was finally achieved in the Spring of 2016 and shortly after the Club opened it’s 3G Stadium facility with a League game against Horden.
The 2016/17 season saw the unprecedented success continue in the Clubs first season in the Northern League 2nd Division by winning the League Title and losing the EA Cup Final to Northallerton Town on penalties. In a memorable first campaign in the Northern League the Club was visibly growing and topped the average attendance charts for Div 2 (179). Stockton Town unbelievably had risen from an U18’s team to ENL Div 1 in just 8yrs.
Season 2017/18 saw a disastrous, almost terminal, start to the first season in ENL 1 turn into the season of a lifetime for everyone involved at the club. After losing the first 8 League games the team rallied to win 19 and draw one of the next 23 matches a run that saw the Anchors climb the table to safety and also setup an exciting run in the FA Vase. The highlight being beating competition favourites West Auckland in Round 5 in extra time of a thrilling game. Comparatively straightforward home victories against Stourport Swifts and Windsor FC set up an all ENL Semi Final clash with Champions elect Marske United. An epic two legged affair took place, with both games played on Stockton’s Home ground, ending with joyous scenes and pitch invasions from the huge 1800 crowd as Stockton Town edged out Marske 3-2 on aggregate to clinch a place at Wembley. Before that glorious day arrived the Anchors knuckled down and won 6 of the last 7 League games to finish a creditable 6th but miss out on a League Cup Final, disappointingly losing at home in the Semi Final after two terrific away wins at Morpeth and North Shields. The Vase Final was a day to remember a fantastic occasion for the Town and the whole of the Club but despite a brave attempt the lads went down 1-0, the memories will last forever.
After another good but at times frustrating season in 2018/19, the club made a series of key signings in the close season with a view to pushing for promotion to Step 4 and the proposed ‘additional’ East Coast Division. The return of prolific striker Jamie Owens complimented a return to his roots for ex Darlington FC star Tom Portas. Dan McWilliams arrived from Whitby and what proved to be just as significant was the capture of ex Preston NE Goalkeeper Callum Roberts and young full back Lewis King who joined from Spennymoor after spending the previous season with Burnley’s youth set up.
It was the defence that was the foundation for what was building to be a season of a lifetime only for the pandemic restrictions to force the FA to end it prematurely and cruelly leave the Anchors with nothing to show for all their labours. They dominated the League campaign losing just once and conceding a paltry 14 goals in 30 League matches, they were on an 18 game unbeaten run when the curtain was brought down and pretty much steam rolling their way to glory. Good runs in the FA Cup and Vase along with a jaunt to the semi final of the Durham County Cup (shocking South Shields on the way) looked to merely punctuate what seemed to be a a runaway promotion and Title winning campaign. Record crowds were seen no less than 3 times with over 900 attending the League fixture on Boxing Day 2019 and an average of 500 for League games showing how far the club had come and almost certainly a four-figure crowd was inevitable before the final game. Memories of famous victories and an exciting season will live on forever but no official record of the achievements will be held.
The Anchors headed into the 2019-20 season with one target in mindpromotion. Michael Dunwell’s side were in pole position to win the league title before the COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to everything. Prior to the stop, Stockton had just lost one of their 30 league games, conceding just 14 goals all season, and were on an unbeaten run in the league of 20 games, which stretch from the end of October 2019 to March 2020. There was to be no more football played in the 2019-20 campaign and the FA declared the season null-andvoid. There was no doubt the Anchors were the top team in Northern League Division One, however, they would be spending the following season in the same league after it was also announced there would be no promotion and relegation.
As always, the club marched on and the Anchors signed Spennymoor Town midfielder Shane Henry and former defender Dale Mulligan re-signed for the 2020/21 season. With the bit between their teeth, Stockton went into the season wanting to pick up where they left off. The season itself began with a 2-0 win against Shildon in the FA Cup, but there was only 12 league games played before the UK went into another national lockdown in November 2020 – the Anchors were sitting second in the table with 27 points. Football did return, but it was the FA Vase and not the league as Stockton beat Charnock Richard 4-2 at home after a four-week break before losing out against Shildon in the next round of the competition. This turned out to be the final match of the 2020/21 season as the pandemic continued and meant no more football could safely be played.
With over 40 games played across the two seasons, question were being asked as to what would happen with the outcome of the season. The Football Associated decided to combine the two seasons during their restructure of
non-league football, meaning the Anchors finished top on points-per-game –therefore gaining promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.
In their debut season in the Northern Premier League East Division, the Anchors finished fourth and thus qualified for a Play-Off place. Following a memorable 2-1 win at Cleethorpes Town in the Semi-Final they reached the final where they unfortunately went down 2-1 at Marske United.
The following season brought the same as Stockton Town achieved their highest-ever finish of 2nd and again reached the Play-Offs. They reached the final again after a penalty shootout triumph over Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Semi-Final. It was once again heartbreak as the Anchors lost out on promotion after a penalty shootout defeat to Long Eaton United.
Signed in summer 2023, Frampton has had experience at number of Northern League clubs including Sunderland RCA and Bishop Auckland. Has also played in Scotland with Tweedmouth Rangers.
Callum joined from Billingham Synthonia, where he spent one season with in the Northern League side. Before that, Callum spent six years of his youth career with Sunderland before joining Preston North End in 2014, where he spent two years on a scholarship and he went on to sign a professional contract in April 2017. He was involved in the first team setup at PNE and also played a key role in helping the Lilywhites reach the FA Youth Cup quarter finals, making two saves in a penalty shoot-out against Everton. Callum also spent time on loan at Skelmersdale United in the Evo-Stik league. Callum is very mobile, agile, has good feet and has great hands, and brings a steely assurance to the defence.
Tom is a product of the youth system here at Stockton Town. The defender broke through into the first team squad when he was 17 and has been an ever present since. A tough, strong, quick, thoroughbred of a centre half, Tom rarely gets ruffled or loses a challenge in the air or on the floor and has forged an impressive long-standing partnership at the back alongside captain Adam Nicholson. Tom has a decent scoring record for a defender and is also partial to scoring the odd free kick or penalty when called on.
Lewis was a member of Hartlepool United academy until 16. He then spent time at Burnley in their youth set up before returning to the North East and joining Spennymoor Town where he impressed with a string of solid performances for the Under-18s earning a call into the first team squad. Lewis is a great prospect, he oss athletic and likes to get forward when playing as a full back but is very difficult to get past when defending and can perform equally as a centre back.
Dale re-joined his brother Nathan at his hometown Club after a spell at Shildon. He played for the Anchors during their successful Wembley run in the 2017-18 season and won Manager’s Player of the Year for some colossal performances, leaving for the Railwaymen early the next season.
Dale is an old school centre half, big and strong with a great never-say-die attitude. He is a no-nonsense player, good in the air and loves a tackle, and always defends with everything on the line. His experience of the Northern League, and character, strengthens the squad further.
Dan is a Stockton lad and after being released aged 16 from Middlesbrough Academy where he played in the Nike Cup winning side. He played for the Anchors for a season, but the talented left footer was taken into the Northern League by Billingham Synthonia and the following year he joined a very good Guisborough side. The full-back moved with the manager to Whitby Town in 2015 and was a regular for the Evo-Stik Premier side. Dan is an athletic quick left sided defender who operates mainly at left back. He is technically excellent and a good passer of the ball, and also is comfortable in possession at either end of the pitch.
Adam
Club Captain ‘Adi’ re-joined Stockton Town to play Under-18 football, and went on to make his senior debut in the first ever season of adult football in the Teesside League age 16 and now has notched up over 400 appearances for the first team. At 6’5”, his strength is in the air, but his commitment to the team and desire to win are a major factor in a back four that has been so instrumental in the team’s success to date. After missing most of the Wembley season with a serious knee injury, he fought his way back to be first choice again and was back to his dominant best last season. A good organiser and reader of the game, he’s forged a formidable partnership with Tom that has now spanned eight seasons –and he also has an impressive goal scoring record for a defender.
Glen
Signed in October after playing almost ten years ago Marske United. Has became an instant fans favourite and won the supporter’s player of the month for November.
Nathan
Nathan was with Middlesbrough FC until his release at age 18, when he joined Darlington FC and played in the Football League. He joined Stockton Town from Billingham Synthonia having previously played for Whitby Town, Marske United and Norton &Stockton Ancients. Nathan’s quality and experience was key on the road to Wembley in 2018 – in the FA Vase Final - and he wrote himself into Anchors history by tucking away the crucial penalty in the Semi-Final Second Leg against Marske. Nathan is a technically good, all-round player, mobile, deceptively good in the air and can play in a variety of positions, but operates mainly as an attacking or holding midfielder. He scores goals, is up there at the club for being a penalty expert and always contributes in every game.
Painter was Stockton’s third signing of the summer, arriving from National League North side Blyth Spartans. The midfielder, who can also play in defence at right back, was with the Anchors youth set up before heading to then-Football League club Grimsby Town. The midfielder went on to sign a professional contract aged 18, also moving out on loan to Lincolnshirebased Spalding United, of the Northern Premier League, for three months in 2020. At just 20-years-old, Painter has bags of ability, and will bring a lot of versatility and energy to the Stockton team.
Tom started his career at Middlesbrough’s youth academy leaving at age 15. He played for Stockton Town’s successful U16s before being picked up by Guisborough where he received a lot of attention. He joined Evo-Stik League Whitby Town in 2011 and won three Player of the Year awards at the club in season 2012-13. He signed for Darlington in the summer of 2014, and scored the goal of the season against Bamber Bridge. Tom starred in two consecutive promotions for the Quakers including winning the Evo Stick Premier Title. After missing most of the 2016-17 season with a bad injury, he left and spent last season at West Auckland. Tom is a mobile, all round, proven high quality, central midfielder who has a complete range of passing and dead ball skills.
One of the highly sought-after strikers this summer, Beddow put pen to paper and become the club’s fourth signing of the summer. The marksman has spent the last two seasons playing in the Northern League, where he scored 31 goals in all competitions last season for the Blues –including 24 in the league to help his side finish third behind promoted clubs North Shields and Consett.
Peter previously played at Guisborough Town in the Northern League, where he won the North Riding Senior Cup. He then joined Marske United and played his part in winning the Northern League Division One title in 2018. Pete is an intelligent footballer who can play a variety of positions, including full-back. He operates mainly as a wide attacker and with his pace, quick feet and close control he’s very difficult to defend against as he can go inside or outside comfortably.
Fowler became known to Stockton Town by his performances for Dunston UTS where he scored just under 30 goals in a season and a half at the club. Prior to his arrival at Dunston, he played for Sunderland, Burnley, Fleetwood where he had loan spells with Guiseley, FC United of Manchester and Bamber Bridge before moving onto Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
Kev forced his way into the first team squad during the Northern League Second Division title winning season in 2017 with a string of impressive performances for the Under-18s and then continued that form to cement a regular starting place. Kev is the type of player that spectators want to see on the ball as much as possible, a naturally gifted wide attacker, who commits defenders with a drop of the shoulder, can go past players at very close quarters and has rocket of a left foot. The winger can play on either side of the pitch and with his work rate and regular goals, he is a vital member of the attacking part of the team. After some mesmerising performances on the way to the FA Vase Final in 2018, he was voted North East Young Player of the Year by the Sunday Sun.
Mikey is a Stockton lad who had previously played at Guisborough Town, Spennymoor Town, Whitby Town and Marske United before returning home. He won the North Riding Senior Cup with both Guisborough and Whitby and then the Northern League Division One title with Marske in 2018. Quick, skillful and a good finisher with great technique, Mikey has a great work ethic and is always on the move and a nightmare to mark.
Stockton’s first statement signing of the summer came in the shape of former Spennymoor Town striker Thompson, who had gained promotion from the Northern Premier League East Division with Marske United last season. Thompson has spent the last two seasons with Spennymoor, but was with the Seasiders for the final two months of the campaign, and made a successful impact as he claimed another promotion. The experienced marksman joined Darlington from Durham City back in 2012 and went on to become the joint-all-time top goalscorer with 100 goals and also the longest serving player in the club’s history. The striker can play up front, out wide or in the number 10 role, and has shown throughout his career that he can easily adapt to whichever role he is required to play in. The signing of Thompson is a big statement of intent from the Anchors, who will be aiming to rack up the goals in the 2022/23 season and go one better than last season.
Signed in Summer 2023, Michael Sweet arrvied from Shildon where he spent three seasons in which he netted 29 goals in 98 appearances. Prior to that he played at Gateshead, Darlington, Billingham Synthonia, Consett and Blyth Spartans. It was at Consett where he enjoyed a particularly prolific spell with 128 goals in 173 games.

We often think of the coming of South American talent to England as a fairly modern phenomenon. Halcyon days of barely playable mud patches, violent conduct being met with a stern word from the referee, and, in the main, British and Irish players filling out teams across the country, seem just a few decades away (until you remember that the Premier League is three decades old, and then you remember just how old you are). But as the birthplace of football, Britain has always had a unique attraction to the footballing world, and South Americans were setting records while rationing was still in place. One of those early pioneers set the First Division alight with his tricky feet and clinical finishing.
That man was Jorge ‘George’ Robledo.
Born in the mining town of Iquique to a Chilean father and an English mother, Robledo’s stay in the nation of his birth was short, and marked by political instability. His parents made the decision when he was just five that they would be safer in England, and migrated to Yorkshire. Robledo grew up facing prejudice, and his ability was not discovered early enough to stop him heading down into the mines. Playing part-time for Huddersfield, he was spared
conscription during the Second World War as a member of a protected profession. This allowed his talent to be spotted by Second Division Barnsley, and his career picked up from there.
Finally able to dedicate himself fully to football, Robledo’s ability improved. At the age of 20, the Football League returned following the end of the war, and Robledo made his debut. A hat trick against Nottingham Forest on his debut signaled what was to come, as Barnsley sought promotion to the First Division. Robledo’s 45 goals in 105 appearances weren’t enough to
secure promotion over the next three years, but they were enough to attract the attention of First Division scouts. In 1949 Newcastle paid the not inconsiderable sum of £26,500 to take the Chilean into the top flight, along with his brother Ted, who George insisted was part of the deal.
At Newcastle, Robledo found himself forced to play as an inside left, linking up with the preferred Jackie Milburn. He scored 11 goals in his first season, but even playing second-fiddle to Wor Jackie couldn’t hide his talent, and the country of his birth came calling. With the 1950 World Cup on the horizon, he made his Chile debut, and was named in the squad for the showpiece in Brazil. He made his debut in the first group game
against, of all teams, England, and scored in the final group game against the USA, but it wasn’t enough for qualification. Still, not bad for a miner who didn’t speak Spanish.
Returning to Newcastle the following season, Robledo only got better. He scored 14 goals for the Toon, and became the first South American to play in an FA Cup final, helping his side beat Blackpool 2-0. The following season was where the Chilean would really carve his name into the history of English football, though. Newcastle retained the FA Cup against Arsenal, and Robledo scored 33 league goals, and 39 in all competitions.
Another eighteen goals would follow in 1952-53, but it would prove to be
Robledo’s final season in the north east. Money was pouring into South American football as it tried to raise its standard, and Chilean club ColoColo came calling. Newcastle accepted an offer of £25,000 for George, who was top scorer in the Chilean league in his first two seasons, and made 153 appearances over five years, winning the league in 1956. After a year out of football, George returned for one final season with O’Higgins before retiring for good, in 1960. And becoming a PE teacher in a school in Vina del Mar until his death in 1989.
Oddly, his goal against Arsenal in the 1952 FA Cup final was immortalised in a child’s artwork, a painting called Walls and Bridges. Usually, a painting by an 11 year old would be forgotten, but when that 11 year old grows up to become John Lennon, it’s quite something.
Robledo’s record of 33 league goals in a season was the most of any nonBritish player in the top flight, a record that stood for 71 years. It is testament to his impact on the game that it took the unbelievable feats of a certain, colossal Norwegian, playing for the most immensely rich side in the league, to beat it.
Enjoy the game.

Ossett United was created on 1 June 2018 following the merger of Ossett Town AFC (est. 1936) and Ossett Albion AFC (est. 1944). Both Ossett Town and Ossett Albion had managed to gain Northern Premier League status and maintain that level of football for a remarkable period of time.
The two clubs merged under the leadership of a new board brought together from the two previous clubs. The Club made its new home Ingfield, the previous home of Ossett Town, and used Dimple Wells, the previous home of Ossett Albion, as its Ladies and Academy Team base.
Despite a successful first season on the pitch, off field things were not as successful with a number of board resignations and some challenging financial issues to deal with following the merger. By the end of the 2018/19 season, Phil Smith had taken on the mantle of club chairman with Stuart Garside, Steve Hanks, Paul Billing, Neil Spofforth and Joe Hanks joining the board.
There were more troubles for Ossett United in November 2019 as a significant and unprecedented court case, dating back to a tackle in 2015 when Ossett Town were playing Radcliffe Borough, was lost with United facing legal and damages costs amounting to £135,000. Fortunately, the club received a generous loan from two of its closest supporters to avoid the club going into liquidation (at worst) or selling the Ingfield ground (at best).

Fortunately, the club received a generous loan from two of its closest supporters to avoid the club going into liquidation (at worst) or selling the Ingfield ground (at best).
James Rogers and Phil Smith swapped roles due to Smith’s work commitments with Rogers taking on the role as Chairman, a role he had previously held at Ossett Town. 2020 also saw the club declare Dimple Wells as surplus to requirements and made arrangements to surrender the lease making Ingfield the single home of the united club.
With the off-field rollercoaster settling down the Board progressed numerous ground improvements at Ingfield with the replacement of the pitch side barrier and installation of LED floodlights being completed in 2021 before attention turned to improving the changing room facilities which took shape in the summer of 2023 thanks to further grants from the Football Foundation.
The extension includes an additional match official room, two offices and a medical room as well as a larger, modern changing room that will become fully operational by the summer of 2024.
The Boardroom has also been strengthened in the summer of 2023 with Dawn Rogers and Kate Hennighan taking their place alongside the eight members already in place.
On the pitch, the first year (2018/19) was a remarkable success with attendances significantly increased from what either club had experienced previously, coupled with success on the pitch reaching the play-off semi-final and winning the County Cup, under the guidance of manager Andy Welsh.
Following the departure of Andy Welsh a couple of months in to the 2019/20 season Wayne Benn, assisted by Chick Hayward, oversaw two covid hit seasons. Hopes were high after a positive pre-season in 2021/22 with Benn reshaping the squad. The season started well with Ossett United in the top half of the table but a run of only one win in three months saw a change in the dugout at Christmas with Jas Collvier and Mark Ward taking a joint managerial role.
The season ended well with the pair unbeaten at Ingfield with seven wins and two draws but away from home inconsistent performances and results saw a ninth placed finish in only the clubs second completed season.
Colliver and Ward strengthened the squad throughout pre-season, and despite on paper the squad looking as strong as it ever had, results did not match expectations. Mark Ward resigned in September with Colliver taking sole charge before leaving the club by mutual consent the following month.
Grant Black became the clubs fourth permanent manager in October 2022, winning his first game in charge, 2-0 at the eventual play-off champions Long Eaton United and only tasting defeat twice in his first 16 games.
Results tailed off as the season ended with the club finishing in 15 th place but the management team had a clear plan in place for the type of player they wanted to bring in ahead of the 2023/24 season with their and the clubs ambition being a much higher finish than recently experienced.
