RAVINGS By Mike Hickey

“THE LAST TREE”

Most of you can probably remember the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. There may be different versions but essentially little George either chopped down or mortally wounded a favourite tree of his father’s. When confronted by his father if he knew anything about the demise of his favourite tree, George apparently confessed that he indeed was responsible. Flash forward a few hundred years and Mikie says, “I must confess, I did it!!”. I don’t think I can get this whole story into a single ravings so it may be a two parter. Here goes!! As you know I have been working on pruning a small hunk of our woodlands over the winter. I have also just finished reading a book by Jamie Simpson called “Restoring the Acadian Forest” and boy what an eye opener. While much of the Acadian Forest still has most of the tree species that existed before European settlement, due to the heavy logging that has taken place the actual dominance of several species has severely declined. In general, red spruce, white pine, hemlock and beech, have been significantly replaced by trees such as white birch, poplar, balsam fir, and white and black spruce. I would highly recommend the book for anyone interested in our current forest conditions and what should be done to return to a healthier forest system. One of the key conditions needed before you can start restoring the Acadian forest is to be able to identify at least the key tree species that you want to manage. So for hemlock one site says “Leaf sides tapered, twigs flexible, leaf attached to small “peg” on the twig, leaf with small stem.”. What in heck are they saying???? Further on I find, “Needles have 2 white “racing stripes” on the underside.”. Okay, this I can understand!!! So off we go looking for white racing stripes. Very soon by turning over needles, we start seeing lots and lots of white racing stripes. Not very prominent mind you but visible if you look hard. So I say to the missus, “I could have sworn that all these hemlocks were fir. I can’t believe that we have tons of hemlock and no fir, this isn’t making sense!!”. So back to the drawing board. More research and guess what, fir also have little white racing stripes!! Check more stuff such as needle size and low and behold, all our hemlock immediately turned back into fir. Suddenly, restoring the Acadian forest is getting tougher than an allowance increase from the missus!!! To be continued ....800

K V Woodworkers Club

The KV Woodworkers Club is a non-profit organization operating from Rothesay High School. Happenings: There has been a lot of cedar in the shop lately. The school students learning how to use the woodworking tools safely are making beautiful new picnic tables for the school courtyard. They are using two-inch cedar. Members are busy making captain beds, an entertainment centre, cabinets, garden benches, nightstands, and turned jewellery. Magic Mike, has built a portable caddy for our portable air compressor and with Walter has overhauled the shaper. This Week’s Tip From Chips: Some Basic rules of turning: Learn and follow the lathe manufacturers rules for safe turning practices. Beginners should first spend a couple of days with an experienced turner, and seek advice before trying a new technique. Sharp tools cut faster and cleaner. The tool cutting edge should contact the wood level with the center axis of the turning wood. The tool cutting edge should be presented to the wood at a shearing angle to create long thin ribbons of wood. The tool bevel should rub the wood behind the cutting edge to ensure smooth cutting and to control the depth of cut. For larger diameter work, use slower speeds. Support the tool on the tool rest, perpendicularly below that part of the tool’s edge that contacts the turning wood. Hold a scraper on the tool rest in such a manner that the scraper’s cutting edge is just below the height of the tool rest. About Our Club: Members may have access to the school shop facilities, 24/7. New members are welcome. Annual fees are $220. For more information, call Jim at 849-3794, Brian at 8473241 or see Bob or Larry at the shop (1st door on the right from the East side entrance to the school, across from Rothesay arena) on Tuesday and Thursday, mornings and evenings, or Saturday mornings. Come check us out. Chips. 202

Kvhs musical production

Kennebecasis Valley High School has a celebrated Drama Program, which is the product of our many talented students and dedicated volunteers. Each year, countless hours of planning, preparation and rehearsals are put into a Spring Musical Production. This year KVHS is proudly presenting “The Music Man”, a story about a con who goes to a rural American town posing as a band instructor and salesman. In the process of selling instruments and expertise to the townsfolk, with the intent of skipping town with the profits, Harold Hill subsequently falls in love and creates genuine confidence and relationships throughout the community. This will be an extra-special event, as this show is set exactly 100 years ago. This unique centennial anniversary will be marked not only by the performances, but by a special parade and fair in anticipation of the run. On Saturday, April 14th a parade including the amazing quartet and the entire cast will march from the High School (Robert Munro Drive) to the Quispamsis Arts and Culture Park (12 Landing Court). The community is encouraged to line the Hampton Road, join in as the parade passes by, and partake in the array of fun activities held afterwards. There will be games, a photo booth and oldfashioned treats to mark this occasion – all starting at 11:00am. The Show runs from Tuesday April 17th to Saturday, April 21st with an 8:00pm curtain each evening. Tickets are $12/balcony or $14/orchestra seating and are available at the school, Past Perfection, KV-Drugs, The Lil’ Shop of Science and Benjamin’s Books. For more information please contact Ruthie Fullerton at 7217884 or email ruthis.fulelrton@nbed.nb.ca. 222

Rothesay-Kings rotary news

On Saturday, February 11th the members of the Rothesay-Kings Rotary held the first of what they are hoping will become an annual event in support of Kingsway Care Home. A lovely meal was served to guests by the newly formed Interact Club of Rothesay High School. In lieu of being paid, the students gave of their time to raise money for their upcoming trip to the Dominican Republic. Guests were entertained by the vocal talents of The Men of Fundy and by singer/song writer Mike Biggar and his wife, Laura McNeil Biggar. Despite poor weather there was a good turn out to this event, and Rothesay-Kings Rotary was able to raise nearly $3000 towards the construction of a safe outdoor patio for the residents of Kingsway care. Thank you to all who volunteered, attended or donated. 204

Song

of a Summer Eve

I never heard the moonlight Skimming the water’s top And I have tried with all my might To hear a little dew drop. Never heard the trees think Or the flowers raise their heads Never heard the robin blink When they dig in the flower beds. I have never heard a star Twinkling in the sky Never heard the sandbar Asking the question “Why”. So when they sometimes ask me About the sound of a summer night I wonder how it would be If someone tuned in right.

VOLUNTEER TAX PROGRAM

Each spring, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) trains volunteers to be able to prepare income tax returns for the current or prior years, using a CRA-approved computer software program. Single clients with income under $25,000 a year, or couples under $35,000, can have their basic tax returns prepared and filed electronically free of charge. A clinic will operate in Rothesay to serve residents of the Kennebecasis Valley at St. Paul’s Parish Centre on the Rothesay Common on Tuesdays until April 24th from 9:00am-12:00noon and 1:00-3:00pm. No appointments are necessary; service is on a first-come firstserved basis. Clients can, if they wish, fill in an information sheet and leave their returns for completion later. Further information on the CVITP (Community Volunteer Income Tax Program) is available on the CRA website: cra-arc. gc.ca , or from the local Tax Services Office at 636-5988. 225

on our cover Masks off – take a stand

Mrs. O’Leary, art teacher at Quispamsis Middle School had her Grade 6 students make masks in art class. Grade seven student, Mary Wilson designed a page with pictures of the students and their masks to remind Quispamsis students not to bully and to stand up for each other to promote a peaceful environment at QMS which said “Take off the masks and take a stand … Because you’re not the only one … because love is louder than hate … because standing by is also bullying … Because together, we can stop the hurt … Because bullying is cruel … Because united we sand – along we fall – don’t let others tumble …stand up! 228

UT CHECK O S! E OUR TIR

April 9th marks the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. After failed attempts by both British and French forces, a corps of brave and determined Canadian soldiers captured this strategic ridge in France, which was of great importance to the German defence. Despite the terrible price in casualties, this battle marked not only a significant Allied victory, but also the first time Canadians had fought as an independent force and not as part of the British Army. Along with other achievements during the First World War, the Battle of Vimy Ridge helped establish Canada as a key player on the world stage, earning our country a separate signature on the Versailles Peace Treaty which ended the war. As a member of The War Amps Operation Legacy, a group of committed young people who are dedicated to preserving Canada’s military heritage, I would like to highlight this significant anniversary of a battle considered by many to mark Canada’s birth as a nation. To commemorate the anniversary, members of Operation Legacy will be donating copies of the documentaries A Vimy Veteran Remembers and In Flanders Fields to their local libraries. These productions are part of The War Amps internationally awardwinning Military Heritage Series, which tells the lesser-known Canadian stories, and are available at a cost-recovery price by calling 1-800-250-3030 or visiting waramps.ca. 831

After 35 Years ALTERNATIVES is now a Hearth Store, a Bike Shop & a One-Stop BBQ Store.

Alternatives, previously known as Alternate Heating, opened its doors as a wood stove store in November, 1977. At that time customers were looking for an alternative to rising oil prices and they turned to wood, especially the more efficiently burning stoves. Thirty-five years later Alternatives has grown into three specialty areas: hearth products, bicycles and BBQ’s. Simon Pothier, who has been with the business for over 30 years, says, “I am often asked how Alternatives ended up with such a unique combination of products.” He explains that, “In the early days customers only bought a wood stove for heat. That means that while business was brisk from September through December there were eight months when customer traffic was slow. Many attempts were made to find a spring and summer product line including camping gear, canoes, solariums and windows. The business line that customers really showed an interest in was Bicycles.” For a number of years Alternatives has sold bicycles, and since 2005 has been known as theBikeGuyz @ Alternatives. More recently Alternatives has seen an increased demand for BBQ’s, so much so that it has now become a second specialty area for those spring and summer months. Common theme between Hearth Products, bicycles and BBQ’s. When asked what he feels has contributed to the success of three separate product lines, Daryl Wilson, the owner said “Quality products, knowledgeable staff and making sure that in each area we offer all the alternatives.” “In the hearth side of the Business we are very pleased to offer our customers quality heating products by Vermont Castings, Pacific Energy,

As for knowledgeable staff, Mr. Wilson wants customers to be informed on the features and benefits of the different products. “It is very important that we are able to assist the customer make the correct buying decision for their situation.” The process begins by understanding what problem the customer is trying to solve and it ends with the customer deciding on a satisfactory solution.

Being able to provide good advice to a customer is made much easier when you carry all the alternatives. Andrew Batchelar, a bike enthusiast from New Zealand who now manages the BikeGuyz side of the business says basically the same thing. “When a customer comes to our store for a bike it is important to know what type of riding they are interested in. That will lead us to show them either mountain, road, hybrid, BMX, or women specific bikes." As for BBQ’s while John Jones may be partial to his Big Green Egg, he likes being able to explain the different reasons for buying a Propane, Charcoal, Pellet or Electric BBQ. “Most people like propane because of ease and speed, others like Charcoal because of the flavor, while others may decide on Electric because they cannot have a gas or charcoal BBQ on the deck of their apartment or granny flat” When asked what is exciting at Alternatives after 35 years, Ms. Blair responds by saying “the growth in our bicycle and BBQ business. We are certainly known as a hearth store, but in recent years we are really excited about what is happening with the BikeGuyz and our BBQ business.”

UNITED WAY “DAY OF CARING”

Day of Caring is a special program coordinated in our community by United Way serving Saint John, Kings and Charlotte counties. Its goal is to mobilize teams of work place employees as volunteers to complete meaningful, hands-on projects that will greatly assist local non-profit agencies in Saint John, Kings and Charlotte counties. The first annual Day of Caring will be held on Friday, June 8th. Projects could include painting, construction, renovations, and maintenance to list a few and all must be completed within one day during regular business working hours (9:00am-5:00pm). There are many more other imaginative ways to get involved like helping out at events, assisting with program services and training. All volunteer efforts, big and small, are vital to the well being of our community. Corporate volunteering has quickly become an essential and creative “corporate investment” strategy, and the Day of Caring demonstrates that, by working together, local companies can make a visible and substantial impact in their community by getting involved in one of the many community service organizations that works to improve the quality of life in our communities. Big Rothesay REad

The Big Rothesay Read was unveiled April 3rd at Rothesay High School. “The Book of (Even More) Awesome”, a 2011 publication by celebrated Canadian author Neil Pasricha, is a book that reminds us about the immense pleasure that can come from some of life’s smallest, most trivial things - snow days, bakery air, finding money in your pocket, bubble wrap. Thousands of KV residents will be reading, chuckling, and sometimes laughing out loud at Pasricha’s descriptions of these and more simple pleasures as they participate in The Big Rothesay Read. “The Book of (Even More) Awesome” was inspired by Pasricha’s webby award winning website-gone-viral 1000awesomethings. com. The site is counting down one “awesome thing” per day, until it reaches number one this month, on April 20th, coincidentally during the six-week time-span of The Big Rothesay Read. Neil was so pleased to have his book selected for The Big Rothesay Read, he waived his speaking fee in order to participate. The honorarium that was offered to Pasricha in lieu of his regular (five-figure) fee was donated back to The Big Rothesay Read with the understanding that more copies of the book would be shared with the community. “We had very generous sponsors already in place to cover the cost of books for the 600 plus high school students,” says Gallagher. “So we decided to get creative.” Event volunteers designed a “Pay It Forward” campaign, where books are given to a community-minded organization, which will then “pay it forward” to a worthy recipient. The recipients can then choose to once again “pay it forward”, and so on. “It’s a great concept and resonates the spirit of the book itself – sharing, giving, all things awesome!” Thanks to Pasricha’s generosity, The Big Rothesay Read has given 100 books to J.D. Irving Limited, who has chosen to “pay it forward” to Prince Charles School in District 8, Saint John, through their successful PALS for Prince Charles Partnership. And there is (even more) awesome news! The Big Rothesay Read committee has some exciting publicity plans. Keep your eye out for a flock of pink flamingos around town – you never know, they might someday land on your lawn! The promo, titled “Birds of a feather ... read together!” is geared at encouraging families and businesses to get involved in The Big Rothesay Read. You just never know where the “Birds of a feather” flamingos will land next. 224

MUSINGS By Debbie Hickey

MOVE IT!

I recently read an article on guidelines for physical activity levels for preschoolers that recommends 180 minutes per day of physical activity and that by age 5 they should be attaining 60 minutes of “energetic play”. Firstly, I was horrified to think that guidelines were necessary for such a thing. When my own children were preschoolers I can’t imagine lack of physical activity being an issue. They were busy, busy, busy; it was getting them to sit still for any length of time that was the challenge! And while I don’t specifically recall my own preschool days, I certainly know that as older kids my brother and I were outdoors most of the time, which would likely mean we were physically active well beyond the guidelines. Secondly, as I read on I was even more horrified to learn that young kids today are not busy at all. Rather, measurements indicate they are sedentary, basically just sitting or reclining, up to 84 per cent of their waking hours. Since most of us tend to become less physically active as we age, what does the future hold for these kids! The Town of Hampton has recently started an eight week program for a healthier Hampton - The 8 Weeks of Wellness Event. There are family walks, fun events, wellness seminars, Sunday afternoon activities in the square. There may be similar initiatives happening in other communities (I hope so), but Hampton is where I am so that is the one with which I am familiar. Those early years are when so many of our lifelong habits and lifestyle choices are established. Family and community activities such as this event are a great way to greet the Spring and make some healthy choices not just for ourselves but also for our children and grandchildren. Hope to see you out and about! 801
