Anywave Moves LPTV Technology to 21st Century The low power television and translator market has typically worked with low budgets and tight margins. Cost-conscious decisions and frugal investments were the name of the game. Equipment purchases were routinely based on low initial capital investment versus design features, benefits and product efficiency. Anywave introduces a new range of Low Power Transmitters called the Slate Series. This new series of transmitters, at unparalleled prices, have power ranges

from 60W to 600W, and feature the most efficient RF transistor available today for UHF broadcast amplification. The BLF888E is a standard among high power transmitters, saving stations tens of thousands of dollars in HVAC and electricity costs. Now the same efficiency and proportionally the same savings are available to LPTV and translator station owners. Security Concerns for Growing IoT Ecosystem By Bodil Josefsson, Head of IoT Security at Ericsson

As an IoT network grows in size and complexity, so grows the attack surface and its vulnerability to advanced and persistent threats (APT). The number of connected devices is forecasted to reach 20 billion by 2023 (www.ericsson.com/ en/mobility-report/reports/november2017). This is a growing nightmare for both service providers trying to keep their networks secure, as well as for the enterprises collecting data from all the devices. Security must be a top priority for all stakeholders whose technology is a part of an IoT network. It must be taken into consideration from the start and cannot be an afterthought. This includes the service providers who need to maintain secure uptime to meet service level agreements as well as the device manu-

facturers who’d like to avoid having their products mentioned in the next round of botnet headlines. Responsibility also lies with all parties in between, such as the organizations managing and gathering data from all the connected devices. Here are the top four security concerns for our customers as they form endto-end, IoT security strategies.

How will I manage identity and access management? Humans are not the only entities subject to identity and access management (IAM) requirements. Devices and applications that access network resources need to have the legitimacy of their connection requests verified as well as to what databases they want to connect. Any device out in the wild – whether it’s a tablet or a sensor – in the wrong hands can be used to access an organization’s network. Should a breach occur,

Next Generation of Aura Uses WiFi Motion and Mesh Technology to Monitor Your Home Without Cameras Cognitive Systems Corp., creators of WiFi Motion, announced the availability of the next generation of the Aura home monitoring system. Aura allows consumers a view into their home – without cameras. The system is simple to setup and uses advanced WiFi Motion technology to monitor the disruption of wireless signals caused by movement, and alerts homeowners to when and where motion occurs. “The latest version of Aura provides even more insight into activity happening in the home, while maintaining the privacy of our customers,” said Taj Manku, Chief Executive Officer of Cognitive Systems. WiFi Motion Technology Unlike other sensors that use heat or light, Aura uses wireless signals – a

more accurate and dependable way of detecting motion. The new Aura expandable Beacon-based system uses a combination of advanced algorithms and machine learning to distinguish between people, pets and mechanical motion (like a fan). With the use of three or more Beacons, mesh motion sensing is unlocked, allowing homeowners to be notified where and when motion occurs in their home. The engineering team at Cognitive is continuously optimizing and advancing WiFi Motion. These advances will be provided as software updates.

Home Automation Aura integrates with other smart home products to expand the automation and control in the home. Consumers can also create custom recipes with IFTTT

SecuGen New Unity 20 Bluetooth Fingerprint Reader SecuGen, a world leading optical fingerprint device and technology vendor, is pleased to announce the new Unity™ 20 Bluetooth fingerprint reader. The Unity 20 Bluetooth is the world’s first elegantly designed, low cost, fully programmable Bluetooth fingerprint reader. This versatile device features SecuGen’s flagship U20 fingerprint sensor found in the Hamster Pro 20 product family but with Bluetooth capability that allows it to securely transfer fingerprint data wirelessly to a smartphone, tablet or PC. It is sleek and small enough to be carried in your pocket as a mobile fingerprint reader or placed solidly at a workstation as a traditional desktop reader.

The Unity 20 Bluetooth can be used right out of the box by calling SecuGen’s Fingerprint Management System (FMS) software’s simple API. Alternatively, it can be custom programmed to suit the needs of the targeted user base. It sports a complete Linux development environment, SecuGen’s fingerprint capture and NIST MINEXcompliant template extraction and matching algorithms, the OpenSSL cryptography library and a 1 GHz CPU. The Unity 20 Bluetooth can also store encrypted fingerprint templates and process them in a closed environment without ever leaving the device. “Most of the existing Bluetooth products on the market are about as

fail-safes need to be put in place to control and limit the damage an attacker can cause.

How do I ensure my data’s integrity? Data is the lifeblood of any organization. Collecting data and converting it into actionable intelligence is one of the key purposes of Internet of Things. The integrity of data is paramount, as is the need to ensure it is not manipulated while in-use, in-transit or atrest. Also, personal data is particularly important to protect and should always be encrypted.

How can I stay ahead if no IoT network can be 100 percent secure? Unfortunately, all stakeholders in an IoT ecosystem, including consumers and end-users, have to accept the fact that no IoT network will ever be able to achieve 100 percent security. There are simply too many potential access points and other vulnerabilities. However, this does not relieve any party of the responsibility they have to maintain security

13

best practices.

How can automation help me keep up? IoT networks and the volume of devices comprising them all require management. No human has the capacity to manually accomplish this, thus requiring automation and machine learning to assist that person. Providing IT teams with the tools they will need to manage a large and complex network and minimize its attack surface is critical.

Any CISO knows, when it comes to an attack, it’s no longer a matter of “if,” but “when.” Being well-prepared for an attack will go a long way to speeding the recovery process and ensuring business continuity. While it may be impossible to completely secure an IoT environment, paying attention to these four areas is a good starting point to achieving end-toend security. For more information, visit www .ericsson.com.

to use motion as a trigger to control connected lights, WiFi cameras and more. Today, Aura works with Amazon Alexa and Google Home to provide users with voice control of their Aura system. The list of smart home integrations will continue to grow with more coming soon.

Away – use when no one is home. Night – use while sleeping at night to activate specific Aura Beacons. Pet (beta) – use to help Aura learn your pet motion when no one is home. Guardian – use to keep an eye on loved ones or to monitor remote properties.

Scenes are new to Aura and allow users to customize how they receive notifications on their smartphone about what’s happening in their home. Home – use when family members are home.

Currently, connected devices can struggle to deliver a seamless experience because they speak different languages (or in technical terms, use different “application layers”). For the internet, the industry solved this problem with open, universal protocols over IP – a combination that unlocked and accelerated innovation. Dotdot’s common device language over Thread’s IP network extends this same proven approach to the Internet of Things. With Dotdot over Thread, product and platform vendors can ensure the high-quality, interoperable user experiences needed to drive growth, while IP allows vendors to maintain a direct connection to their device – and their customers.

Simplified Product Development with Mature Technologies and Diverse Supply Chains It’s important to note that Dotdot over Thread is not another new standard. Dotdot enables the open, mature and already widely adopted application layer at the heart of Zigbee to work across Thread’s IP network – the same network technology fundamental to the internet. For product managers, new standards represent risk. Dotdot and Thread are backed by global, industry-leading companies and represent two of the most robust, widely deployed and well-supported connectivity and interoperability technologies, driving billions of products and networks already in homes and offices. “Zigbee and Dotdot are the product of 15 years of innovation by our members, and the experience that comes from over a decade of building successful products,” said Tobin Richardson, Zigbee Alliance President and Chief Executive Officer. “This maturity is why major technology leaders have chosen Zigbee, and Dotdot over Thread now brings that value to new markets. This marks the first of many partnerships to come as we extend our application layer across additional networks to accelerate time to market and unify the IoT for all stakeholders.” “The Thread Group’s vision is to extend IP – the powerful foundation of the internet – to low-power IoT devices,” said Grant Erickson, President of the Thread Group. “Just like the internet, this vision also requires the industry to put forth open, common protocols so devices

from any vendor can work together. Dotdot gives Thread adopters an important option for that open, end-to-end connectivity and interoperability.”

How to Start Working with Dotdot over Thread The Dotdot specification is available today to Zigbee Alliance members. Additional resources, including the Dotdot Commissioning Application, will be available in Summer 2018, along with the opening of the Dotdot Certification program from the Zigbee Alliance. Thread launched its 1.1 specification and opened its certification program in February 2017. The Zigbee Alliance and Thread Group now share a number of common authorized test service providers, and are working with them to ensure an efficient, seamless certification process for Dotdot over Thread adopters. About the Zigbee Alliance The Zigbee Alliance is the foundation and future of the IoT. Established in 2002, its wide-ranging global membership collaborates to create and evolve universal open standards for the products transforming the way we live, work and play. With members’ deep and diverse expertise, robust certification programs and a full suite of open IoT solutions, it is leading the movement toward a more intuitive, imaginative and useful world. Hanwha Techwin America Diversifies Business by Venturing into OEM An interview with Richard Simone, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Hanwha Techwin America. BSD: Who is Hanwha Techwin America?

RS: Originally started as a photo imaging company, we’ve expanded into the security surveillance market and have become one of the leading manufacturers of cutting-edge security systems, IP cameras, digital video recorders and networkbased systems. A couple of years back, we were called by a different name – Samsung Techwin America – the U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Techwin. After being acquired Vision Research (Cont’d. from p. 1)

Either way, they’re small enough (roughly 16 inches by 9 inches by 9 inches) to warrant permanent installation, but like most near field monitors, the SCM12 Pro lacks the mounting points of ‘installation-ready’ loudspeakers. Responding to requests from its customers, ATC has produced the SCM12i, Walton (Cont’d. from p. 1)

Walton’s new Portable Radome is designed to cover and protect satellite uplink/terminal antennas in the size and operating frequency classes commonly used for remote uplinks and broadband satellite data connectivity to remote locations. An operator can quickly assemble this lightweight radome with no tools. It assembles in less than an hour, unlike conventional radomes, which can take two days of crew labor and a crane to Samson Satellite (Cont’d. from p. 1)
