PEOPLE OF LAVA MOUNTS LET YOU MOVE YOUR TV, NOT YOUR FURNITURE Experience entertainment from a whole new angle. In fact, any angle you want! The mMotion Swing remote-controlled wall mount from People of Lava fits virtually every size and brand of TV, allows 180 degrees of rotation and even learns to work with your own remote control. This product is distributed exclusively by DKM International Ltd. and is now available in both Canada and the U.S.A. mMotion Swing is a motorized wall mount for flat-screen TVs. It comes in two different sizes, small and large. The small version is designed to support flat screens from 26″ to 37″, with a maximum weight of 55 pounds. To accommodate virtually every TV size, the

mMotion Swing also comes in a large version to accommodate 37″ to 55”, with a maximum weight of 100 pounds. Both models allow you to enjoy your favorite entertainment from multiple places in your home, smoothly and silently, with the touch of a button. With its slim profile and wide range of swing, the possibilities are endless. The mMotion Swing mount presents several unique opportunities to enhance your TV viewing experience. No longer do you have to be confined to a particular, chair, couch or room. Finally, you can let your TV come to you instead. You can now enjoy your favorite movies and shows from multiple places or even mul-

Consumer Electronics Daily News tiple adjacent rooms. You can even save your favorite positions! The living room, the kitchen and even the balcony are now accessible by remote control, with only one TV. When using your mMotion Swing, you don’t have to worry about having to keep track of an extra remote. The intelligent IR receiver in mMotion Swing conveniently learns from your own remote control so you can keep your living room table free of clutter. Also, you can program the Swing mount to automatically go to your favorite position when you turn on your TV and return flat against the wall when you turn it off. These are two of the reasons why the mMotion Swing is called the “intelligent” wall mount. The key behind mMotion Swing’s outstanding performance can be found in the gearbox. To solve the problem of

silently moving up to 100 pounds horizontally 180 degrees from a single stud mounting plate, People of Lava had to develop a totally new gearbox in-house in Sweden. The result was a patented gearbox technology that today makes mMotion Swing perhaps the most competent wall mount on the market. With its thin profile and easy mounting procedure, mMotion Swing is suitable for any environment. It’s not even a problem whether you want it to swing to the left or to the right. The single-stud mounting allows you to use it either way! All you have to do is sit back, relax and Swing wherever and whenever you want! antennas increases to five. Today’s smartphones don’t have any spare room since the majority of the volume is taken up by the display and the battery. As the number of antennas in a device grows, the need for high isolation between the antennas becomes increasingly important, as well as a low correlation co-efficient between the two LTE antennas for MIMO. According to Jeff Shamblin, Chief Scientist at Ethertronics, “With real estate inside the device already at a premium, OEMs are facing a real challenge in making all the components fit to meet carrier compliance requirements and specs, and deliver a superior user experience. As a result, it’s important for the antennas that we design to be not only small but extremely efficient given the lack of space inside the phone.” Moving to 4G LTE, active antenna systems, whereby the antenna dynamically interacts with the RF System, are needed to provide high performance and connectivity, as well as covering all of

the LTE frequency bands. Ethertronics has developed a portfolio of active antenna system solutions including: Band Switching and Active Impedance Matching. Ethertronics’ active Band Switching solution allows for smaller antenna structures while toggling between an array of spectrum bands to support the mix of legacy 2G/3G and new 4G LTE networks―13+ bands from one antenna structure. The company’s Active Impedance Matching solutions can reduce the antenna’s physical volume by 50 percent without performance tradeoffs. Another benefit is the ability for the antenna system to re-tune itself after a user’s hand or head causes de-tuning. Designing antennas is no longer a “black art”; advanced antenna architecture and extensive design experience is critical to delivering on the promises of LTE. Band Switching and Active Impedance Matching techniques are only two examples of active antenna systems. Ethertronics’ innovations will help device OEMs solve tough challenges while continuing to provide a superior user experience. For more information, visit www.ethertronics.com or call 858-5503820.

MORE FEATURES? MORE COMPONENTS? NO PROBLEM The mobile industry is introducing newer, faster, cooler devices that consumers can’t wait to get their hands on. As these modern devices are being developed to deliver noticeably superior data, video, call performance and battery life, there are a set of challenges that device OEMs need to solve to keep consumers excited and satisfied. One of the challenge areas is at the heart of the device and can be a determining factor in whether or not consumers’ expectations are met. Antenna design was once considered a “black art,” where knowledge and experience were combined with a repetitive process of

tweaking the design until the device met specs. These formerly passive antennas have taken on a new form, especially since wireless devices are now requiring an increasing number of antennas without a corresponding increase in device size. This space challenge is one example of why Ethertronics keeps innovating antenna systems, especially as new 4G LTE networks go live across the globe. On average, 3G phones have three antennas: main, GPS, and WiFi/Bluetooth. LTE requires a second antenna for MIMO and with new technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC), the number of

yet there are times when you’ll want to do that. A service provider might change its legal policies, or increase its fees. Or a much-desired phone may be launched that only supports a rival cloud-based service with its mobile apps. All of these issues can cause disruptions and changes in working patterns. Users may find themselves having to work around inadequacies in the system. They might waste time waiting for unresponsive web interfaces, or spend years storing their files on a service that suddenly changes the rules. Perhaps the hard drive isn’t such a

poor cousin to cloud computing after all. Not only is it often more reliable than cloud storage, but it is also faster. It offers superior capacity at a relatively cheap price, and it maintains whatever file structure you create on it. Traditionally, the only problem with the hard drive has been remote access. Unless you’re taking a portable drive with you and risking all of your data on the road, you’d have to copy files from one computer to another. iTwin changes that. iTwin uses a pair of hardware tokens to connect a remote Mac or PC to a main computer carrying all of the user’s files. No data is stored on the hardware token, or in the cloud. Files can be dragged and dropped between computers, or even remotely edited. Sometimes, the tried and tested technologies are the best, especially when modified with a little modern technology. With iTwin, your hard drive can provide all the benefits of the cloud. Come to our booth at #70605 in the Venetian to find out more.

ITWIN: THE BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING WITHOUT THE HASSLE By Lux Anantharaman, co-founder and CEO, iTwin

Can the cloud really double as your hard drive? Supporters of cloud-based services, in which files are stored on the web, advocate doing away with hard drives on computers altogether, and storing everything up there. But will this approach really make users’ working lives more flexible, or will they end up having to work around the cloud? The cloud provides some clear benefits, but it also reduces productivity in subtle ways by forcing us to adapt our working patterns and practices. For example, each cloud-based service has its own interface, forcing users to learn new ways to perform old tasks―often far too slowly. Uploading files from your computer to the Internet, moving them between dif-

ferent folders, and renaming them in the cloud can all become laborious, especially if an Internet connection slows down or a browser freezes. Cloud services can also squash the precious folder structures that users rely on. Bob stores all of his company documents in a folder named after the person who sent them to him. Jane stores hers according to the client the document is for. Jim’s folders simply say “Now,” “Next week” or “February.” Unless users are fastidious, cloud-based services can replace these file and folder structures with a flattened mess. By the time users recognize the shortcomings of cloud services, it can be difficult to get their files out, because service providers want to keep you in the system. That can make it difficult to transfer a career’s-worth of documents or a lifetime of pictures between cloud providers, and

SIMPLICIKEY REMOTE CONTROL ELECTRONIC DEADBOLTS DELIVER CONVENIENCE AND GRACE TO THE FRONT DOOR The conveniences of life are not necessary for living, but once you have them, you don’t know how you ever lived without them. This is the mantra that has driven the folks at SimpliciKey’s headquarters since the inception of their awardwinning remote control electronic lock. Developed to give families greater convenience and enhanced security, SimpliciKey, LLC manufactures Remote Control SimpliciKeyTM Electronic Deadbolts which feature convenient alternatives to mechanical residential door locks. The electronic lock offers a more simplistic approach to secure residential access with a design that homeowners will be proud to display on their front door. Convenience starts with easy installation, and SimpliciKey rises to this challenge with the install and set-up taking about 20 minutes or less. Needing only a screwdriver when standard holes are already drilled into the door and door frame, SimpliciKey is a plug-and-play device, serving as the perfect replacement for existing door hardware. With its handheld remote controlled keyfob, SimpliciKey customers can unlock their deadbolt with the touch of a button at distances over 50 feet from the door. SimpliciKey deadbolts come with two 128-bit AES encrypted remote control keyfobs for secure transmission. With powerful memory built into each lock, up to six more can be added for a total of eight uniquely coded keyfobs. Designed with backlit keypads, SimpliciKey deadbolts are capable of storing up to 16 four–six digit entry codes, making it possible for

SimpliciKey owners to create, administer and delete codes. This allows authorized guests secure residential access, even if the homeowner is not present. To further accommodate all members of the family, SimpliciKey includes a traditional sixpin, bump-resistant keyway for those in the household who prefer this method of entry as an option. SimpliciKey deadbolts draw a graceful balance between traditional locks and electronic locks of the future. While SimpliciKey is designed for any door needing a deadbolt, the design team at SimpliciKey had the front door in mind very early in the process. Understanding that front door hardware also has the power to enhance the beauty of the home, SimpliciKey locks feature slim profiles and rounded edges with wonderfully crafted sliding covers to conceal the keypad when not in use. As if restoring style and grace in door hardware was not enough, SimpliciKey even carried over the curvy silhouette to the sleek remote controls. It looks like SimpliciKey deadbolts are not only on the brink of adding convenience and peace of mind to lives across the country, but enhancing the beauty of homes across the land—starting with the front door. Yes, the conveniences of life may not be necessary for living, but after owning these new SimpliciKey deadbolts, you may just wonder how you ever lived without them. For more information, visit the SimpliciKey booth 3608. You can also contact SimpliciKey at 703-904-5010 or online at www.simplicikey.com.

INTERSIL D2 AUDIO’S HIGH-END SOUND BECOMES AFFORDABLE

Discriminating Ears Can Have Their Audio Products Tuned by Mark Levinson

By Fabiola Mercado, Director, Axis PR & Entertainment, Inc.

People noticed him: a man in the Venetian, transfixed in front of a machine, occasionally touching its screen. Some might mistake him for a gambler, but that’s one thing he is not. If he’s going to make a move that potentially bets his income and his reputation, he doesn’t take chances. That’s why he chose who he did. That man is an audio engineer for a manufacturer of consumer electronics. And last year at 2011 International CES, he sat down in front of a touchscreen computer and, within an hour, had completely configured, programmed and customized the audio of his company’s next CE product. At this year’s CES, there will be even more like him. Audio engineers are invited to Intersil D2AudioTM’s Venetian demonstration suite, 34-309, to have the same experience. Similar to a video game, engineers will use a touch screen PC and Audio Canvas III software to easily, quickly build high-quality amplifier firmware. Then they’ll download it onto the target hardware in real time, and can instantly hear the results in their target system. The users define the audio signal flow and architecture to any specific system configuration without signal flow limitations. For example, on the same DAE-3HT based platform, they can MiVeu (Con’t. from p. 36)

Mount the MiVeu to your chest when skateboarding or racing BMX and Motocross. Mount the MiVeu to your leg when snowboarding. Mount the MiVeu to your lower torso when snow skiing. In addition to the harness, MiVeu includes a universal bracket mounting system, allowing you to zip-tie connect to a ski pole, a roll bar, or the suspension

reconfigure a 2-channel or 4-channel Soundbar to a 7.1-channel ‘theater-in-abox’ solution. Plus, with the DAE-3HT, audio engineers can upgrade their audio system sound quality with the Mark Levinson MightyCatTM acoustic enhancement signal flow, which brings capabilities of audio mastering tuning techniques to sound optimization of consumer audio playback devices. Once an engineer experiences MightyCat sound, no other audio experience sounds quite the same. The new D2-71A80 and D2-71B80 feature: • 8-Channel Digital Audio EngineTM • Exceptional Audio Performance - Power Outputs: > 110dB SNR @ < 0.01% THD+N(w/D2 Power Stages) - Line Outputs: > 114dB SNR(w/D2 Output Filters) • D2Audio SoundSuiteTM Enhancement and Virtualization • Integrated DSP Post Processing―Including Equalizers, Filters, Mixers and more • Embedded Asynchronous Sample Rate Converter: SR from 32kHz up to 192kHz Save time and effort by using the industry’s most flexible and easy-to-use fully integrated audio system, which extends from this year’s new affordable DAE-3 to the sophisticated DAE-6. includes a photovoltaic panel (PV), ‘Y’ harness connector and Ni-MH rechargeable battery and battery tube. Photovoltaics produce solar energy by converting solar radiation (sunlight) into direct electricity. In the case of the WireFree Solar Pack, the PV panel is mounted on the inside of the window opening and converts the sun’s light into electrical energy. The harnessed electrical energy is stored within a special rechargeable (Ni-MH) battery which powers any Somfy WireFree motorized window covering, resulting in a maintenance-free, environmentally friendly

alternative to disposable lithium batteries. TaHomA offers users total control of their “Energy Triangle” (natural light, artificial light, and temperature) to maximize energy efficiency. By integrating motorized window coverings powered by the WireFree Solar Pack into the TaHomA system, users can add another element of greener living into their everyday lives. “The use of renewable solar energy brings us to the forefront in advanced motorized window covering technology,” said Somfy North America Applications Manager Brent Holup. “The WireFree™ Solar Pack will contribute to our environment while creating a positive experience for our customers.” To learn more about the TaHomA system and the WireFree Solar Pack kit, visit www.somfysystems.com.

As a result of these theater improvements, many TV manufacturers are planning for the next revolution in home theater video quality – increasing television resolution to 3840-by-2160 pixels (2160p). In fact, several consumer electronic companies have already introduced home projectors and televisions at 2160p resolutions. This new wave of higher resolution televisions is already causing another transition in display panels, and a need for new video processing technologies that can reproduce every video resolution with extreme clarity. Marseille has developed some of the first chips that can catalyze this new transition to 4K video. Marseille has gathered a team of video experts to drive this 4K video revolution. The VTV-1200 family is the first of the company’s products, which will make it possible to transform 1080p HD video content to the highest resolution

possible (2160p). For example, the VTV1222 chip provides both scaling and deinterlacing of video at 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p resolutions to sharp, crystal clear 3840-by-2160 resolution. This means consumers can experience a true digital cinema experience in their home without investing in an entirely new library of movies. One of the other exciting applications of this chip is audio/video receivers (AVRs). With the addition of Marseille VTV-1222 to an AVR, every device in the home theater including DVD players, Blu-Ray players, set-top boxes, and game consoles become 4K video capable. Marseille is poised with its expertise in 4K video to change the landscape of the consumer electronics market. Visit www.marseilleinc.com, call 408-689-0305 or email info@marseillenetworks.com.

MARSEILLE: 4K VIDEO IS THE NEXT REVOLUTION IN CONSUMER HOME VIDEO In the last decade, both the screen size and the resolution of televisions have dramatically increased, largely due to the economies of scale that were achieved in LCD display panels. Now there is another video revolution on the horizon, one that will bring a true digital cinema experience to consumer’s homes. Marseille, Inc. is at the forefront of this revolution. Marseille is a semiconductor company in the Silicon Valley that specializes in video for the personal computer, mobile electronics, and home theater markets. The worldwide transition from standard-definition to high-definition resolutions was the driving force creat-

ing the market for large-screen televisions. As television screens increased above 40 inches, LCD was the one technology that could scale to the meet consumers’ desire for larger screens at mass market prices. This drive for larger screens was motivated by consumers’ desire to bring the movie theater experience to their homes. Even with these major advances, the home theater does not bring the fully immersive experience of the modern digital cinema, which now touts 4096-by-2160 (4K) pixel resolutions in a majority for the digital cinema theaters.

GOOD NEWS FOR BLUETOOTH AUDIO ENGINEERS Any audio engineer will know that the task of testing and measuring a Bluetooth audio device is by no means straightforward. The process involves establishing wireless connections, setting up signal generators, signal analysers, electroacoustic test fixtures, microphones and more. And then you need to create a series of audio test files in software, play them though your device, and perform post processing of captured wave files. But it no longer has to be this way! Prism Sound’s award-winning dScope Series III audio test system is the first audio analyzer to support streaming

directly between test system and Bluetooth device, enabling real-time, closed-loop testing of Bluetooth audio systems. Engineers the world over will breathe a huge sigh of relief at the news that Bluetooth audio development, testing and manufacturing is now simpler and faster than ever before. The dScope Series III is the world’s first complete audio test solution for Bluetooth devices, combining analogue, digital, electronic, electroacoustic and Bluetooth measurement capabilities in a single instrument. External software for generating and analysing waveforms is

Thursday, Januar y 12, 2012 now completely redundant. Need to probe your Bluetooth audio designs at board-level? No problem. The dScope Series III can be specified with an interface converter that allows generation and analysis of serial digital audio signals (I2S etc) directly. Need to make an electroacoustic measurement of a Bluetooth loudspeaker in the lab? Again, the dScope Series III includes all the necessary tools, including time domain gating of impulse response measurements. Want to check the Bluetooth link for drop-outs and lost packets? The system incorporates a unique family of ‘Event Manager’ tools, enabling you to automatically detect and log intermittent issues

BELKIN EMERGES WITH NEW BRAND IDENTITY AND FOCUS FOR CES 2012

At the 2012 International CES, technology is everywhere―literally. It’s ubiquitous, awe-inspiring, and even a little bit overwhelming at times. As an industry, consumer electronics companies do an excellent job of touting the latest bells and whistles and creating products that constantly push the envelope of what is possible, but they often fall short in relating technology’s more human side. Sometimes the industry fails to realize that technology should exist to enable human experiences and not the other way

around. Belkin, however, takes a different view, and its newly unveiled brand identity speaks strongly about the company’s ultimate source of inspiration: people. Belkin believes in the infinite potential of people and that technology should exist to make people’s lives better, easier and more fulfilling. In fact, its new logo, nicknamed PIP for People Inspired Technology, is an image consisting of nine dots connected to create a universal symbol of a person. The logo is a visual

representation of Belkin’s commitment to creating meaningful technology experiences for people, inspired by people. “When I started Belkin back in 1983, our sole purpose was to make connecting to the new world of computers easier, and though we’ve grown exponentially in terms of people and products, in many ways our focus hasn’t changed at all,” said Chet Pipkin, Founder and

NEW LEGISLATION AIMS TO SPUR ELECTRONICS RECYCLING Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste, has announced that it is working with the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling in an effort to promote safe and effective domestic recycling of consumer electronics and stimulate jobs for the burgeoning green collar workforce. The Coalition is supporting proposed federal legislation, The Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (S.1270 and HR 2284), to restrict the export of toxic electronic waste, as well as help spur expansion of the domestic recycling industry. The result of this legislation will ensure that e-waste is not sent to third world countries, while creating tens of thousands of new domestic “green collar” jobs.

ERI has pledged to be an active member of this coalition. As the first company in the world to achieve dual certification under both the E-Stewards and R2 certification programs, ERI operates all of its facilities in accordance with the most stringent standards in the electronics recycling industry. The company, headquartered in Fresno, California, operates facilities around the country and expects to be hiring hundreds of additional workers to meet increased demand as responsible electronic recycling continues to become standard procedure for American businesses and consumers. ERI has already doubled in size over the past two years and anticipates continued rapid growth. “We are very proud to stand alongside the other companies in our industry

that are willing to recycle responsibly and do it here in the United States,” said John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of ERI. “This vital coalition stands in support of crucial proposed federal legislation and will help strengthen our industry here in the U.S., allowing us to create even more jobs while recovering valuable resources and protecting our homeland security.” The U.S. generated more than 3.1 million tons of e-waste in 2009, according to U.S. EPA statistics. Electronic scrap contains high concentrations of toxic materials such as lead and cadmium and is classified as hazardous. However, a large percentage of e-waste collected for “recycling” is actually exported to developing countries that lack environmental and worker safeguards. The Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (S.1270 and HR 2284), introduced in June, would restrict toxic e-waste exports to developing countries that lack adequate safeguards for the environment and workers.

The Coalition for American Electronics Recycling includes 29 U.S. companies involved in all aspects of the domestic electronics recycling and disposition industry, with 74 recycling operations in 34 states. The legislation is also supported by major electronics manufacturers and retailers, including Hewlett Packard, Dell, Apple, Samsung and Best Buy, as well as the Electronics Takeback Coalition, an environmental organization. The legislation promotes business expansion and job growth through free trade of tested, working electronics and parts; separated and properly labeled commodities recovered from electronics, such as copper, steel and aluminum; and manufacturer warranty returns for repair within the original supply chain. For more information on recycling needs, visit www.electronicrecyclers .com, http://1800recycling.com or www.urbanmining.org.

EUROPE TARGETS LEADERSHIP IN NEXT-GENERATION SMART SYSTEMS The partners in a new European research project today announced details of the multinational/multidisciplinary ‘SMArt systems Co-design’ (SMAC) program. This important three-year project, partially funded by the EU’s FP7 (FP7-ICT2011-7), aims to develop a leading-edge design and integration environment (the ‘SMAC Platform’) for the design of smart systems. These are intelligent, miniaturized devices that incorporate multiple functions such as sensing, actuation, computation, wireless connectivity and energy harvesting in a single tiny package and will be key components of next-generation applications in areas as diverse as energy saving, healthcare, automotive, factory automation and consumer devices. The aim of the SMAC program is to put European companies in pole position to lead in these key markets Prism Sound (Con’t. from p. 53)

by reducing design costs and time-tomarket for next-generation smart systems. The bottleneck in developing smart systems is not due to the technologies but the design methodology. Advanced packaging technologies such as System-inPackage (SiP) and chip stacking (3D IC) with through-silicon vias already allow manufacturers to package all these capabilities more densely to meet increasingly demanding cost, size, performance and reliability targets. However, design methodologies have not kept pace with technology advances. “The major obstacle to the rapid expansion of smart systems applications is not the technologies involved but the lack of a structured design methodology Continued on Page 81

EXTENT RELEASES 2012 GAME INDUSTRY PREDICTIONS Closing out a year of significant growth and numerous company milestones, Exent, the world’s largest Games on Demand provider, has released its 2012 Game Industry Predictions. Below are five industry developments that Exent’s Head of Content Programming, Rick Marazzani, says are coming in 2012:

Android tablets go mass market and gaming along with it! “Led by the Barnes & Noble Nook and Amazon Kindle Fire, Android tablets will be on more night stands and in more purses and school knapsacks than ever before. As powerful and easy to use as most portable gaming consoles, these tablets offer affordable, massively appealing games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds, plus they can be used for web surfing, reading, and playing music and movies. With the extensive functionality and low price points of these tablets, look for them to take a much bigger slice out of the iPad’s market share in 2011.”

Location-aware mobile gaming will break out “Your smartphone is always online and GPS location-aware. Game developers will harness this fact to deliver gameplay that will change and offer challenges based on where you are. Social game makers like Zynga, Mocospace and Booyah will make their games more social by tapping users’ social graphs in locations to enhance the mobile versions of their games.” Massive layoffs in the social web game space “With multiple hit games and big marketing budgets needed to stay afloat at the top of the Facebook game charts, many social publishers simply weathered 2011 waiting to see what Zynga’s IPO would foretell for their own futures. Faced with the reality that there are too many people working on too many games for the market to bear, social developers will be forced to place smarter (and fewer) bets as user acquisition Continued on Page 81

JAYMO ADDS PRINT AT HOME FEATURE FOR PIXCASE PERSONALIZED PHONE CASES “It’s like putting a picture in a picture frame,” states Jay Foght, President of Jaymo about the PixCaseTM line of personalized phone cases, “and now with Jaymo’s new free online design tool, you can create free personalized designs for your phone and print them at home.” Customers who buy a PixCase can use their own PC or iPad to visit the online design tool at www.jaymo.co to upload their own photos, access hundreds of free gorgeous backgrounds, clip art and fonts to design one-of a-kind inserts.

They then have the option to save their designs as .pdfs or print at home. No waiting. No postage. Personalization of mobile devices isn’t new. There are a lot of companies that have photo upload software but many of them are hard to use and they are expensive. Jaymo’s design tool takes the mystery and the expense out of creating a personal device case. “It’s easy to take for granted that everyone is technologically savvy these days, but that isn’t always true. phone skins and wall decors.

PIDN: How do you plan to keep up with evolving technologies?

MD: We are very aware of how mobile devices are slowly taking over as the main Internet access for many people, how HTML 5 and cloud computing are increasingly dominating the application development domain. We are actively trying to leverage these technologies and I have to say, it’s exciting to see what we have already achieved. We also need to make sure this platform provides our current customers with a good return on their investment, so we are planning on implementing added value throughout every technological transition rather than simply ‘switching’ from one to the other. PIDN: Describe your current marketing strategy.

KP: Our focus for 2012 includes creating greater worldwide awareness for our brand and investing in our marketing to PIDN: How is your solution different on a technical level?

MD: Our people come from different industries, which helped us see the problem of customizing print products from several angles. We adhere to best practices and build components that can evolve separately, integrate together and weave with other platforms. This means that every time someone asks us whether a vision can be implemented using our tools, the answer is always ‘Yes.’ Extensible would be the best word to describe what we built. The architectural decisions we made five years ago allowed us to continuously improve on our software without ever having to ‘replace’ a system or reintegrate our modules.

The product that has been creating the most buzz recently is our Double Thick Impact Card which allows a 24 point postcard to be printed on a standard digital press. websites out there who haven’t bothered to personalize their own cases,” continues Jay Foght. “The software isn’t user friendly or the wait is too long, sometimes up to two weeks to receive a personalized case in the mail. Who wants to wait two weeks for a phone case?” The Jaymo design tool was created to go hand in hand with the popular PixCase. The concept of the PixCase is a simple one. By tracing the patented PixCase template around any 4”x6” photo, a person can cut out the photo and insert it into the PixCase. The case now becomes a picture frame, pure and simple. From the wife who loves to digital scrapbook to the husband who loves photos of his kids, the PixCase is the perfect gift. Made to look like a real picture frame, the “frame” is constructed of a

durable, shock absorbing black vinyl. At a time where people are conscience of their spending, the PixCase allows a person to show their individuality again and again. People can change their photo or design any time they choose. And because the insert can be changed at any time, one long-lasting PixCase will be the only case anyone will need to buy for their device. The PixCase family includes cases for all Apple products and select Blackberry models. Included with every purchase is a bonus screen guard. Available on the Jaymo website and at retailers around the country, Pixcase products range from $23.99 to $35.99 depending on the model, making them some of the most affordable personalized

CONVERTIBLE SOLUTIONS PROVIDES TOOLS TO GROW PHOTO SALES Convertible Solutions will demonstrate how photographers and imaging labs can use its line of specialty papers to grow photo sales during PMA@CES, January 10-13 at the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas. The company will show its full line of preconverted stocks for creating personalized school portrait fliers, ID products and variable data postcards and mailers in the Convertible Solutions booth, number 72350. Convertible's personalized school portrait fliers enable the creation of high impact personalized proof fliers with envelopes on digital presses. Originally created for Inter-State Studio and Publishing Company's spring portrait program, these proof fliers have lifted package purchase rates in thousands of schools. Another school portrait product, Convertible's ID-4 stock, is used for creating full color ID stickers for use as school service items.

The Convertible Solutions booth will also feature the new Double Thick Impact Cards which enable the printing of 24 point postcards on HP Indigo, Kodak Nexpress, Xerox iGen and other digital presses. The Double Thick Impact Cards are designed for photo studios, imaging labs, printers and direct marketing companies that want to combine variable data or short run printing with the tactile impact of an extremely thick postcard. “Postcards are one of the simplest and most effective forms of direct marketing,” according to Convertible's Director, George Fry. “Thicker postcards stand out and have higher response rates than thinner cards, but producing a personalized postcard on a thick stock has been difficult. The digital presses required for short run or variable data printing did not work well with such heavy stock.” To solve this printing challenge,

“Today, drivers have to adapt to the features and capabilities of their car,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford chief technical officer and leader of the company’s global Research and Innovation team. “The Evos Concept changes the paradigm of how you interact with your car. Our vision is that the car should seamlessly adapt to the driver taking the driving experience to a whole new level of personalization and convenience.” The Evos Concept integrates technology in a holistic way meant to enrich the driving experience. By exchanging

data with the cloud, the Evos extends the connected lifestyle from home and office to the vehicle, providing new possibilities for personalization and adaptability of the car. Through integration of on-board data about driver preferences with cloud-based information such as work schedules, music and weather conditions, and local data delivered through vehicle-to-vehicle communications, Evos Concept aims to make life simpler. “The car gets to know you and can act as a personal assistant to handle some of the usual routines of a daily commute,” said Mascarenas. Ford researchers have also incorporated technologies to enhance driver health and wellness while at the wheel. Features such as the heart-rate monitoring seat and certified allergy-free interiors connect to the cloud to monitor the

physical state and workload of the driver, and adjust the driving experience accordingly. “Our wellness research and technologies are focused on relieving driver stress and enhancing a driver’s situational awareness,” said Mascarenas. “Drivers around the world are spending more time behind the wheel, and the car should not be another stress point in their lives.” Evos also utilizes the power of the cloud to understand driver behavior and travel patterns in order to make predictions about destinations and to adjust the control strategies for the state-of-the-art lithium-ion plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Through understanding where the driver is likely to go, Evos can intelligently switch between running on battery or engine power in order to use the least amount of energy for any situation.

By filling this gap with a holistic, integrationaware, design platform, the SMAC project will give European industry an advantage in exploiting the potential of smart systems, reducing design costs and time-to-market and minimizing the risk of encountering problems in the final integration.” Today, smart systems are designed

using separate design tools for different parts of the system. For example, completely different tools are used to model, simulate, and design components such as MEMS sensors, analogue and RF components, and digital ICs and none of these tools take the ultimate system integration into account. The SMAC Platform will be codeveloped by academic and industry

partners, including several EDA (Electronic Design Automation) and semiconductor vendors to ensure its usability in realistic, industry-strength design flows and environments. The result will allow the industrial partners and their customers to increase their competitiveness in the world-wide market for smart system products and applications.

and businesses with these energy choices, as well as vast amounts of cleaner energy on a national scale, are leading an energy revolution toward the smart, sustainable and connected world so many of us have envisioned. We’ve installed the largest solar system at any American sports stadium―more than 8,000 panels at the Washington Redskins’ FedExField―and we’re installing solar and wind power at the home of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution. We’re also installing solar systems on the rooftops of homes, schools and businesses all around the country; and we’re building the first phase of the world’s largest rooftop solar project, which will be spread on commercial rooftops across 28 states. Our companies Green Mountain

Energy and Reliant are offering customers the most advanced choices in cleaner energy and smart energy. Green Mountain now supplies 100-percent renewable energy to the Empire State Building. Reliant has taken its model smart home out of the lab and into the real world, creating Innovation Avenue―12 houses in a real, everyday Houston neighborhood wired with smart appliances, home energy management devices, Reliant’s smart energy solutions, rooftop solar and electric vehicle chargers. Both Reliant and Green Mountain are leaders providing smart phone apps to help people manage the energy in their lives. While our eVgo business is steadily expanding its network of EV fast chargers in Texas, NRG has also formed the

The energy world, like the American people, is getting a lot smarter about being smart, and there are infinite new opportunities for consumer electronics because of this energy transformation. As NRG drives this transformation, we have the power to change life and the energy to make it happen. I hope you all enjoy the energy of our people as they show you the proof of what is possible today at CES with our Reliant House on Wheels. Because it’s designed to embrace apps installed on the phone, we’ve already been able to add more functionality to the units we’ve already sold by enabling additional apps and updating our own AppRadio app. We think AppRadio is truly innovative and will eventually lead to significant changes in the automotive electronics landscape. With this product we’re once again staying ahead of the curve to help grow our industry, and we think it will be a significant new category for Pioneer in 2012.

We also see products with smart phone connectivity and integration as a crucial new direction in 2012. The iPhone/ iPod/Bluetooth connectivity are now “expected” features. Consumers are constantly demanding simpler user interfaces for complex devices and seamless integration with their portable/personal devices such as MP3 players and smartphones. Android support will also be the big buzz for 2012, and manufacturers need to cater to those consumers that expect more and won’t settle for subpar performance.

We leverage the latest touch screen technology, including Android OS and 3D animation, and incorporate recent scientific discoveries from early childhood education to provide families with an integrated learning solution that promotes progressive play and offers a rich learning experience, guided by VINCI Early Learning Objectives. CEDN: What was the inspiration behind VINCI?

DY: My young daughter, Hera, was the inspiration behind VINCI. She is a very bright, energetic toddler, and like many kids her age she gets bored easily! Before having VINCI, she loved to occupy herself with my smart phone, but I kept asking myself what she could gain from Skinit (Con’t. from p. 1)

We offer a variety of technologies from removable pressure sensitive film, to high speed permanent decoration of glass, metal and plastic substrates. Our applications include special editions, private labeling / asset tagging and the ability for consumers to create their own designs. CEDN: What was the most significant event or series of events for Skinit in the past year?

BK: Wow, what a year! Back in 2010, Skinit received a $60 million investment. The purpose of this investment was to move Skinit to the next level. We made a lot of progress on that front in 2011. We became truly international, opening a state-of- the-art facility in Suzhou, China. This facility sits in the midst of the largest concentration of manufacturAT&T (Con’t. from p. 1)

CEDN: What is an emerging device?

GL: Take out traditional handsets and smartphones, and if it has current running through it, it’s an emerging device. That’s anything from tablets to personal navigation devices, digital cameras, health and wellness devices, portable gaming devices, tracking devices, clothing that monitors vitals, etc. Everything is fair game as long as we can wirelessly enable it and put it on the AT&T network.

CEDN: How important are emerging devices for AT&T? GL: Very important. AT&T launched our Bluetooth violin (Con’t. from p. 128)

playing with my phone or tablet? I was very disappointed in the lack of depth in most learning apps and decided to create an early learning system that would help my daughter build character and a winning attitude and equip her with the right skills to meet tomorrow’s challenges. CEDN: What would you say makes your company unique?

DY: VINCI is unique because for the first time ever the best technology is offered to young children. Only by using the latest technology can we expose our children to a world of opportunities. From a learning perspective, it is the only system currently available on the market that helps parents understand critical milestones and set realistic and age-appropriate expectations of a developing child. ing for personal electronic devices in the world. This operation is revolutionizing the supply chain for just-in-time decoration of substrates; eliminating forecast errors and risk for the OEM.

We also invested heavily in acquiring new talent to augment the strong team Skinit had in place. We brought in some great people in the areas of web and product marketing, international logistics and operations, and coating and print technology. We’ve put in place professional sales and account management teams, and enhanced our already talented software and development, industrial design, engineering and graphic art departments. CEDN: What would you say makes your company unique?

BK: What distinguishes Skinit is a history of industry firsts that have created tremendous value to the consumer electronics ecosystem. In 2005, we were the first to introduce consumers to removable Emerging Devices Organization three years ago with the mission: Connect Everything that makes sense to be connected, with the goal of making all devices smarter and more valuable to the end-user. We recognized the opportunity early and moved aggressively to seize it. We added nearly 1.3 million devices in the third quarter alone―that’s more than 1 million devices and 300,000 tablets―and have 14.5 million-plus emerging devices running on our network.

Consumer Electronics Daily News DY: Our product emphasis is on early learning. Often parents think that learning starts with school. But in fact, by the time the child turns five, parents already can see a major difference in their child’s knowledge and capabilities. We believe that by providing parents a complete ecosystem, comprised of a tablet computer and well researched apps, we will assist them with raising well-rounded children. CEDN: What does your company want to achieve?

DY: We want to show parents that technology can be used as a tool to help parents save time on searching for and assessing educational content and instead spend a lot more face-to-face time with their kids. We also want to raise awareness around the idea that children can excel and succeed as long as their parents are willing to invest the pressure sensitive film [for the decoration of thousands of devices], and in 2006, a patent-pending software platform for consumer electronics companies to leverage―increasing profitability with their customers. In 2007, we brought personalization to consumer electronic medical devices and in 2008, introduced permanent on-demand personalization to OEM wireless handsets with Sharp, HTC, RIM and T-Mobile. Skinit was the first to launch “while you wait” on-demand personalization for consumer electronics in retail with Microsoft Stores in 2009, and in 2010 introduced the Skinit Trend Database―leveraging millions of SKUs and associated design trend data to help consumer electronics companies achieve better selection and attach rates for designs and products. In 2011, we were first to introduce high speed, mass scale personalization to OEMs and ODMs with our China Facility. For 2012, we plan to introduce high speed 3-D decoration to the consumer electronics marketplace―providing tremendous value by eliminating industry costs. mobile broadband network is uniquely suited in technology, choices for our partners and speed to complement all emerging devices; we’re clearly the carrier of choice. But capacity is critical – spectrum is the highway of our wireless network and we need to make sure there’s enough to move the traffic in the future.

time in their children’s learning process. Finally, we want to revolutionize early childhood education for both low-and high-income families. CEDN: How do you determine your company’s success?

DY: We believe we’ve succeeded when parents return to us to thank us for giving their children the best possible start in life with VINCI. To us, the most important role of a caregiver is to help children discover their own talents and follow their true passion. In 20 or 30 years from now, we’d like to see our VINCI Kids achieve great things in life. That would be the ultimate reward and a true indicator of our success. Stop by the Mommy Tech pavilion at CES to see VINCI in booth 3409 or visit www.vincigenius.com, call 855-698-4624 or email contact@VINCIGenius.com.

There’s more―Skinit has the largest library of content, brands, and art for our customers and partners to choose from. In addition, our amazing group of designers, experts, artists, and engineers can work with retailers and OEMs to differentiate the electronic devices they sell. Our patented / patent-pending technology platform makes it easy for consumers to interface with us on the web, and makes it easy for the retailer and OEM supply chains to integrate with our capabilities. We continually invest in R&D activities to bring to market new technology for product decoration, and world class information and logistics systems. Because of our vast library of designs and the option for our consumers to use their own art or photo, we can mine our database to predict trends in design, colors, and consumer electronic devices.

Skinit will be located in the Venetian Suites, this year. To schedule an appointment, visit www.promo.skinit.com/ces2012.php or email sales@skinit.com.
