Boys and Girls 9-11

Boys and Girls 9-11
Never robust in health, Father McGivney fell ill during the pandemic known as the Russian or Asian flu in late 1889. He developed tuberculosis and was stricken with severe pneumonia in January 1890. The young priest lost physical strength just as his Order was moving toward new vitality. After seeking respite and remedies, he was eventually confined to bed in the St. Thomas rectory, where his concern and prayers for his people only increased. After receiving the last rites from a fellow priest, he died on August 14, two days past his 38th birthday.
The funeral in Thomaston was an indication of the love and respect the people held for this hard-working, holy parish priest, drawing Catholics from across the state, including the bishop, more than 70 fellow priests, and civic leaders. The funeral cortege in Waterbury was the largest ever in that city at the time, with mourners renting every available carriage within miles for the procession to the McGivney family plot in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The funeral also reflected the deep personal appeal that Catholics found in the Knights of Columbus. Delegations came from almost every one of the 57 Knights of Columbus councils that had been chartered in the Order’s first eight years. Father McGivney’s holy example also inspired his two younger brothers, Patrick and John, who followed him into the priesthood and served the Order as supreme chaplains.
Today, the earthly remains of Father McGivney are interred in a polished sarcophagus in New Haven’s St. Mary’s Church, where he founded the Knights of Columbus. His vision and mission are carried forth by more than 2 million Knights of Columbus throughout the world, who form a band of brothers under the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.
Visit the Father McGivney Guild at www.fathermcgivney.org for more information.
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.
Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen
You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!
The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

The first four days fall of March fall during the liturgical season known as Tempus per Annum or Ordinary Time (formerly known as Time after Epiphany) which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green, the symbol of hope, is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The remainder of the month of March is the liturgical season of Lent which is represented by the liturgical color violet or purple a symbol of penance, mortification and the sorrow of a contrite heart. All saint days that are usually Memorials are shifted to Optional Memorials during the season of Lent.
For these examples, Cor is set on a Saturday morning. These examples demonstrate how one key element, i.e., prayer or formation, can be more heavily emphasized and still incorporate all three elements together. The timing for each is up to the leadership and may affect the order and content structure.

The mission of Cor is to refocus Catholic men on Jesus Christ and to form and strengthen them in faith and virtue through a brotherhood committed to prayer, formation, and fraternity. The goal of each Cor gathering is to provide the opportunity for men to encounter Christ, to pray together, to be formed in their faith, and to strengthen their bonds of brotherhood, preparing them for courageous leadership and the mission of evangelization for their families and communities.

The Holy Father's Intentions for the Month of March 2025
For families in crisis: Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.
I know that February is a short month, but when it is a short month and your busy, it certainly seems to fly by!
Cleveland continues to be a leader when it comes to Knights of Columbus activities and events. This month alone, we brought in 29 new brothers which is slight lower than our average of 34, but still outstanding. We are at 72% of our goal well on pace to reach 100%. Six (6) councils have reached their Supreme membership goals with three (3) well over 100%. Each week, we are averaging six (6) new members. Keep up the great work. Check out the incentives from at the Diocesan, State, and Supreme levels late in this issue.
Getting our forms completed and submitted to Supreme continues to be an area we can improve upon. Yes, 185s are in. Thank you. But 365s, 1295s (both August and February), and 1728s are lagging behind the state average. Please check to make sure that these reports are submitted. Yes, it is possible that Supreme has not processed them yet, especially if the reports were sent in via USPS. Member Management and email continue to be the best method. If you need help, please ask your District Deputy or feel free to contact a member of the Diocesan Team or myself. We would be glad to help.
When it comes to Exemplifications of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity, nobody can touch Cleveland. A total of 44 live and in-person Exemplifications have been reported bringing in 184 of the new 189 members. Cleveland has reported 38% of the state wide Exemplifications. Keep up the good work. Remember, schedule the Exemplifications now for the March Blitz and work to the Exemplification.
Also, there is the end of year Exemplification Incentive for the Diocese. Report a live, in-person Exemplification and your council can win a WalMart gift card to use for your activities.
When it comes to activities, Cleveland is leading there as well. There are 69 active councils in the diocese and 64 of them have at least reported one activity through the state program. There are a number of councils that are on their way to maximizing the state program. Remember the state program closes on April 15 with the “Of The Year” reports due by April 1. After that, we will work on submitting the Columbian Award (SP7) to Supreme for Star Council.
Lastly, there are 31 councils that are Safe Compliant in the diocese. That is great. However, there are another 26 that are almost there. If you are shooting for Star Council, then you MUST be Safe Compliant through the Knights of Columbus. Check with your District Deputy or looking at the report available on Supreme’s Officers Online to see if you are compliant and when your compliance expires. If you need help, please ask your District Deputy, Diocesan Team Member, or myself.
You and your councils continue to grow in faith, serve the parishes and communities with pride, dignity, and honor. It is great to see all the activities and events you are doing.
Lent is coming as this Wednesday, March 5th, is Ash Wednesday. You know what that means FISH FRIES are back! If your council and/or parish has a fish fry and you want to blast it out to all the councils, send me a flyer. I will send out a special Fish Fry Announcement to all the councils in
the Diocese. Who thinks that they have the best fish fry in town? Try them all and find out!
Thank you to all the councils and members that came out on a wet and cold day for the Super Cash Bonanza Roadshow. Councils are requesting more and more tickets. That is great. If you need more, feel free to reach to George Metz, Mike Incorvati, Teran Taggart, or myself. We all have some available for you. Remember, the first turn-in is key and you want to target that four (4) tickets per member. Shoot for those rebates so you can earn more for your local charities.
Finally, the state convention. Yes, the dates changed from May 16-18 to May 23-25. This is due to Hilton and not the Knights of Columbus. The team has put together a great time we are hoping the local councils and those coming from around the state, will get an opportunity to enjoy Cleveland and the surrounding area. FIRST CALL email went out on March 3rd and the flyers and forms are available on the state website. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the state convention this year.
Cleveland continues to rock. I am so proud of the dedication and faith you all put into your councils and the programs you offer. Keep up the good work and Cleveland will continue to be a leader here in the state.
Have a blessed Lenten Season!
Vivat Jesus,
Jim
For Catholics, the Lenten season is a period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of Easter. However, an additional approach suggested years ago by Dynamic Catholic, “Don’t give up Chocolate” not merely giving something up, but also actively grow spiritually during 40 days of lent. Maybe read the gospels, spend extra time in front of blessed sacrament. What if you committed to going out and asking one man to join the Knights of Columbus? Extending such an invitation could prove transformative for yourself, your council, and your parish, we grow today for tomorrow. Moreover, it presents an opportunity for the individual you invite to deepen their spiritual journey and contribute to their community.
Let us embrace this Lenten season as an opportunity to reach out, invite men to join the Order. Don’t forget with E-Membership (www.kofc.org/JoinUs ) website or scan the QR code, men can join any time and become a member instantly. Click blue “BLESSEDMCGIVNEY” promo code for free membership.
Below is the current Exemplification schedule for the Cleveland Diocese. Please register your Exemplification by visiting www.kofcohio.org. If you would like to schedule the Diocesan Exemp Team, please contact Jim Maslach at 440-7859838 or via email at kofcjkm@gmail.com

Super Ca$h Bonanza 2025
Brothers … Ca$hman here with a couple of important items concerning our plan to foil the “Squealer” and his team from up north.
Thank you to all you for coming out during the weekend Roadshows. I know that it may not have been your first or second or hundredth choice to do on the weekend. But your presence there struck fear into the heart of the
State Convention 2025
On the cusp of the upcoming baseball season, planning the state convention is a lot like stepping into the batter’s box. You choose your bat just like looking for host locations, you stand waiting in the on-deck circle studying the pitcher and seeing if there is anything that can help you, then you step into the box and look directly at him. You plan for everything that this guy can through at you. You studied his tendencies. You are ready. He gets into the wind up and … a curveball? And as that curveball goes by you after you have swung, doubt creeps into your mind.
For those of you who have not heard, the state convention was on the brink of being cancelled. Due to a lot of activity in Cleveland on May 16-18, the Hilton was looking to cancel our contract. The Hilton gave us three options. After much debate with the state officers, we decided to move the
“Squealer” and he now knows that Ohio is dedicated to helping our charities and being strong.
You should be getting the tickets out to your members via mailing, captains, or distribution meeting. If you need more tickets, please reach out to your diocesan state officer or a member of his team. If they do not have any, please feel free to contact me here at the Ca$h Cave at 440-785-9838 via voice or text. Email works as well at kofcjkm@gmail.com.
Finally, despite the change in the state convention, the Super Ca$h Drawing will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, starting at 9:30 AM. The
weekend to May 23-25. Yes, that is Memorial Day Weekend. Sorry about that. There was a time that we were on Memorial Day weekend, and we got great attendance. Hopefully, this year, we will have the same.
We have assembled a team from around the state to help plan this year’s convention. There are the familiar things to do like the Annual Msgr. Krispinsky Golf Outing and Euchre Tournament. The Friday Night Welcome Party will be a great opportunity for some fun and games and catching up or meeting for the first time, members from around the state. Some new items include excursions available Friday and Saturday for those family members to visit the Rock Hall, Science Center, or Art Museum along with a lot of other items. We hope that this will help your families enjoy what Cleveland has to offer. Finally, remember that this is an
location of the drawing will be at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Middleburg Heights, and will be broadcast via the state council’s YouTube Channel. What does that mean for you? The turn-in dates remain the same. The first turn-in is April 1st and the second is May 12th. If you need Ca$hman to come and pick them up, reach out to me. We can make any arrangements.
Thank you again, brothers, for your dedication to helping raise $1 Million for charity again here in Ohio. I know that we are committed to the first principle of the Order in concert with the second and having a good time doing it showing the third. Till next month … Ca$hman is out!

Spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and pray for Our Lord to make his heart our own, so that we may see and love in others what he sees and loves in us.
Through the Pilgrim Icon Program, councils organize a Sacred Heart Holy Hour featuring an icon depicting the most famous image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, painted in 1767 by Pompeo Batoni and now venerated in the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The reproduction bears the blessing of Pope Francis, through the Papal Almoner, and is one of more than 300 icons traveling across the world, from council to council, for veneration and use in prayer services.
The Sacred Heart Holy Hour includes readings from Sacred Scripture and reflections from Pope Francis on the Sacred Heart, as well as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, prayers to the Sacred Heart and time for silent prayer. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament may also be included. Following the holy hour, families are encouraged to enthrone the Sacred Heart in their homes by placing an image of the Sacred Heart in a place of honor and conducting an enthronement ceremony.
Since the first traveling pilgrim icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1979, more than 191,000 council and parish prayer services with some 23 million participants have been held.
Each district will have the opportunity to host the icon for 6-week periods per the schedule. Councils interested should contact their District Deputy to make arrangements.
Booklets and prayer cards will be

Share the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote respect for life by participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico, through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all human life and honoring Our Lady.
Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

We need help unloading food deliveries at the food pantry at the Father Michael Wittman Ozanaam Center. Would you be willing to help out?
Every Thursday from 8am to about 9.15am we need two people to unload fresh produce. On the fourth Monday of each month, from 1 to 2.30 pm, we need 6-7
people to unload nonperishable food. You do not have to commit to every fourth Monday afternoon or every Thursday morning.
Instead, you would be one of the volunteers that Ken McCarthy could call when he is scheduling volunteers; if you are available great, if you aren’t, not a problem.
If you are willing, please let me know if you are
potentially available on Monday afternoons or Thursday mornings or both.
Thank you, Mary Golrick

Brothers, Tax Day, April 15, will be here before you know it. Do you know if your tax rate or bracket has changed? If so, are you aware of the implications? Your income throughout life can fluctuate, causing you to potentially end up in a higher tax bracket than anticipated. And following an election year, each new administration can change tax brackets and tax rates. As a result, you may not have as much disposable income or as much money to leave to family as you planned. This can be true earlier in life, or in retirement when your income sources may change. You can protect yourself against these potential losses and build dependable cash value through permanent life insurance with the Knights of Columbus. Permanent life insurance allows you to build cash value that you can access tax-free while you’re alive. You can also create an income tax-free inheritance for your loved ones after you pass. Of course, we always recommend that you work with a
qualified tax advisor or CPA. But permanent life insurance can be a useful tool for tax planning in a range of situations. In partnering with you to secure your financial future and legacy, we’re fulfilling the mission of Blessed Michael McGivney, who founded our Order 143 years ago this month. I’d love to share how permanent life insurance may be able to help you prepare for the unexpected. If you have any questions, please come chat with me and we can schedule a time to meet. Thank you!
*Tax benefits assume all premiums are timely paid and are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuer. Any policy loans will impact the tax benefits by reducing the policy’s death benefit and cash values. Proceeds from life insurance policies may be subject to certain taxes based on individual circumstances. Tax laws vary by jurisdiction and may change over time. Knights of Columbus and its agents do not provide tax or legal advice and are
not financial planners. Please consult with your financial, legal and tax advisors about your own particular circumstances. For costs and complete details of coverage, please contact your agent or the Knights of Columbus.

Blessed Michael McGivney’s love for baseball was part of his mission to build faith, family and community a legacy carried on by the Knights of Columbus today.
Baseball is a game known for its superstitions and as the MLB playoffs begin Oct. 1, players will certainly be searching for an extra edge to beat their opponents en route to World Series glory.
Yet superstition is a “deviation” from true worship of God. However, invoking heavenly intercession is not. But who should Catholic ballplayers turn to for help during the stressful playoff push?
As of today, there is no official patron saint of baseball. St. Rita is often cited, not so much for her athletic prowess or love for the national pastime (since the 15th-century nun lived several hundred years before the game’s invention), but for her connection to the 2002 film, The Rookie.
While she is a powerful intercessor, Blessed Michael McGivney a 19th-century Connecticut parish priest on the path to canonization has more of a claim to the title of patron saint of baseball. After all, he played the game. Moreover, the order he founded, the Knights of Columbus (K of C), has used baseball as a tool for evangelization and charity. Additionally, some of the game’s mightiest heroes have been members like Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Nap Lajoie and Joe DiMaggio who shaped the game into what it is today. (More)

There were 5,877 abortions in Cuyahoga County in 2022. The Ultrasound Initiative is more important now than ever before.
The Ultrasound Initiative is going strong at St Ladislas Council 16373. The council has placed 5 ultrasound machines thus far, and are working on 2 more machines for 2024. A huge key to that quantity of machines placed to date, valued at $206,209, is the phenomenal support by numerous councils in the Cleveland Diocese. These councils include: 16376, 310, 15056, 3269, 2643, 15614 and 7970. What a great example of charity and unity! We are grateful for the support of this life saving program.
2025 is a new year and we cannot let up in the fight for life. St Lad’s Council 16373 still needs your help to accelerate the installation of these ultrasound machines in the Cleveland Diocese. To save lives.
Please contact Bud Tetzlaff at budtetzlaff@aol.com or 216-533-9754 to help out.

All councils in the Knights have a common goal of engaging their members. Many councils struggle with this concept when they shouldn’t. This training presentation focuses on the relationship between member experience and member engagement. Participants will be re-introduced to the Council Engagement Assessment along with other suggestions on how to properly engage their council members and communities.
