Comisionados hispanos y demócratas dominan las elecciones en Kissimmee Por Elizabeth Sabillon Condado Osceola, FL - Las elecciones de 4 de noviembre han provocado cambios en el Gobierno de Osceola y en la Ciudad de Kissimmee. Hace seis años, los cinco Comisionados del Condado Osceola eran 4 republicanos y 1 demócrata, a partir del martes los Comisionados del Condado elegidos son un republicano y 4 demócratas.

La elección general fue tensa hasta que Rick Scott (REP) fue anunciado

como el gobernador de la Florida para su segundo mandato en el cargo. El gobernador titular Scott recibió 2,861,390 votos, mientras que Charlie Crist (DEM) consiguió 2,795,262 votos. Scott, derrotó a Crist por unos 100,000 votos.

Además, el Representante en el Congreso que ganó por el Distrito 9 fue Alan Grayson (DEM) con 35,733 votos derrotando a Carol Platt (REP) con 29,872 votos.

Día de los Veteranos en Valencia College

By Elizabeth Sabillon Kissimmee, FL- El 6 de noviembre en Valencia College Campus de Osceola se llevó a cabo una actividad abierta al público para rendirle honor a los militares veteranos de la nación.

La recaudadora de Impuestos de Condado de Osceola, Patsy Heffner, compartió la historia de "The StarSpangled Banner”, junto a Gina Marie Incandela, quien cantó el himno nacional. Incandela ha cantado en eventos deportivos a través del país, incluyendo los de Orlando Magic y los de Orlando Predators. Un cuarteto de saxofones de la Escuela de Artes del Condado de Osceola tocó ”America the Beautiful” y miembros del Concilio de Veteranos del Condado de Osceola presentaron los colores.

El orador invitado lo fue Jaime Meléndez del Primer Batallón, 504th

PIR, 82 División Aérea. Meléndez, quien sirvió por 20 años en el U.S. Army, actualmente ofrece sus servicios voluntarios para ayudar a los veteranos.

Meléndez honró a los veteranos y citó, “Solo 1% de la población de los Estados Unidos sirve a nuestra nación”.

En adición a la actividad exterior, en el interior se colocaron mesas donde representantes de cerca de una docena de agencias compartieron información y literatura con los veteranos.

Hoy día, hay aproximadamente 23.3 millones de veteranos en los Estados Unidos. Originalmente se le conocía como el Día del Armisticio y luego fue cambiado para el Día de los Veteranos en el 1954 por el Presidente Eisenhower.

By Elizabeth Sabillon Kissimmee, FL- Valencia Colleges Osceola Campus held a communitywide celebration on Nov. 6 to honor the nations military veterans.

Osceola County Tax Collector Patsy Heffner shared the history of "The Star-Spangled Banner”, she was joined by Gina Marie Incandela, who sang the national anthem. Incandela has sung at sporting events across the country, including for the Orlando Magic and the Orlando Predators. A saxophone quartet from the Osceola County School for the Arts played “America the Beautiful” ,and members of the Osceola County Veterans Council presented the colors.

The guest speaker was Jaime Melendez from the 1st Battalion,

504th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division.

Melendez, who served for 20 years in the U.S. Army, currently volunteers his time to help other veterans.

Melendez honored the veterans and said, “Only 1% of the United States population serve our country”.

In addition to the outdoor ceremony, resource tables were set up inside where representatives from nearly a dozen agencies shared information and distribute literature for veterans.

Today, there are approximately 23.3 million Veterans in the United States. Originally called Armistice Day, it was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 by President Eisenhower.

En la elección por el asiento del Distrito 2 entre John P. Quiñones (REP) y Viviana Janer (DEM), Janer consiguió 6,430 votos, derrotando a John P. Quiñones con 6,132 votos. Además, Janer es la primera Comisionada hispana en el condado de Osceola.

"No estoy interesada en el aumento de impuestos a la propiedad, en lugar estoy interesada en traer nuevas empresas a la comunidad", dijo Rentas en cuanto a lo que va a seguir haciendo en el cargo. "Me gustaría ayudar a las mujeres a expresar sus preocupaciones, quiero que más mujeres se involucren en la política", dijo Rentas.

In Osceola County, the closest race of the night was Cheryl Grieb (DEM) who got 5,811 votes, defeating Frank Attkisson (REP) who got 5,705 votes for the District 4 Commissioner seat.

In the District 2 seat election between John Q. Quinones (REP) and Viviana Janer (DEM), Janer got 6,430 votes, defeating John P. Quinones with 6,132 votes. Grieb and Janer made history, as it is the first time two women have been elected as County Commissioners at the same time. Also, Janer is the first Hispanic women Commissioner in Osceola County.

Fisher, and ended with incumbent Wanda Rentas’ win of 6,159 votes, while Jim Fisher got 4,364 votes. “I am humbled and thankful with the people that still believe in me”, Rentas said. Rentas ran for election in 2010 because she was “motivated to make a change, she wanted her voice to be heard”. Rentas was elected in 2010 and defeated Jeanne Van Meter. “I am not interested in raising property taxes, instead I am interested in bringing new companies to the community”, Rentas said in regards to what she will continue doing in office.

“I would like to help women to voice their concerns, I want more women to get involved in politics”, Rentas said.

Osceola Schools - Noticias / News estudiantes del Distrito que no tienen hogar, en muchos casos, estos libros fueron el comienzo de una biblioteca en el hogar ya que no tenían libros y les permitió participar en el Reto de Lectura de Verano de la Superintendente igual que estudiantes en viviendas permanentes con sus propios libros.

El Distrito Escolar de Osceola recibe el Premio Nacional por un Servicio Distinguido y Liderazgo por su ayuda a los estudiantes sin hogar Osceola County, FL - La Asociación Nacional para la Educación de Niños y Jóvenes sin Hogar (NAEHCY, por sus siglas en inglés) ha seleccionado al Distrito Escolar de Osceola como único destinatario del prestigioso Premio de NAEHCY 2014 por Servicio Distinguido y Liderazgo en sus excelentes esfuerzos de proveer un servicio a los niños, jóvenes y familias sin hogar de nuestra comunidad. Este premio Nacional destaca el enfoque del Distrito Escolar en asegurar que cada niño y joven que no tenga hogar sea exitoso en la escuela, desde la infancia hasta una educación superior.

Para poder reducir la brecha de rendimiento entre los estudiantes sin hogar y estudiantes en viviendas permanentes y elevar los niveles de rendimiento de todos los estudiantes, durante el verano 2014 el Programa de Familias en Transición (F.I.T., por sus siglas en inglés) del Distrito implementó el “Proyecto 100,000 libros” para promover la alfabetización en lectura.

La meta de este proyecto fue desarrollar una consistente cultura de lectura durante el año, especialmente para estudiantes menos privilegiados. El Programa F.I.T. se unió a la superintendente Melba Luciano mientras ella retó a los estudiantes a leer 12 millones de minutos durante el verano como parte del Reto de Lectura en Verano de la Superintendente.

A través de un comerciante, el Departamento de Programas Especiales del Distrito Escolar de Osceola compró 25 plataformas grandes de maderas llenas de libros usados a un costo de $5,000, el cual fue pagado mediante una donación de Walt Disney Resorts.

Osceola School District receives National Distinguished Service and Leadership Award for outreach to homeless students Osceola County, FL - The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) has selected the Osceola School District as the sole recipient of the prestigious 2014 NAEHCY Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership for its outstanding efforts to provide service to the homeless children, youth, and families in our community. This national award highlights the school district's focus to ensure that every child and youth experiencing homelessness is successful in school, from early childhood through higher education. In order to narrow the achievement gap among homeless students and permanently-housed students and to raise all students' achievement levels, the district's

Families In Transition (F.I.T.) program implemented a "100,000 Books Project" to promote reading literacy over the summer of 2014.

The goal of this project was to build a consistent, year-round culture of reading, especially for underprivileged students.

The F.I.T. Program partnered with Superintendent Melba Luciano as she challenged students to read 12 million minutes over the summer as part of the Superintendent's Summer Reading Challenge.

Through an outside vendor, Osceola School District's Special Programs Department purchased 25 large pallets of gently-used chapter books for $5,000, which was paid for from a donation from Walt Disney Resorts. With over 8,500 hours of volunteer service from community members and 21 different community agencies, the books were cleaned and bagged so that every Osceola student in kindergarten through Grade 3 was able to receive five books to keep.

For the district's 4,500 homeless students in many cases, these books started a student's home library as no books were in the home, and allowed them to participate in the Superintendent's Summer Reading Challenge like permanently-housed students with books of their own.

"Through planning, monetary donations, collaboration and partnerships, and volunteerism, the 100,000 Books Project instilled the love for reading in the hearts of those children living in deep poverty," said Superintendent Melba Luciano.

"Winning this national award speaks to how the Osceola School District is reaching its vision to outperform and to help each and every one of our students succeed."

Elected officials and community leaders that were key parts of helping the Center become a reality today were present at the ceremony. The impressive structure made mostly of glass was even more breathtaking on the inside.

Legalizing medical marijuana was close but by 3% was not approved in the state of Florida. A 60% vote was needed to legalize it but 57% of voters voted yes, compared to 43% who voted no.

County Commissioners Cheryl Grieb and Viviana Janer will be sworn in on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m in the Osceola County Commissioners office. The City Commissioner, Art Otero will be sworn in on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at the City Commissioners meeting.

Educación / Education El Centro de Educación Técnica Osceola (TECO, por sus siglas en inglés) abre nueva instalación de Adiestramiento para la Academia de Justicia Criminal Condado de Osceola, FL - El 30 de octubre, se llevó a cabo el corte de cinta para la apertura de la Academia de Justicia Criminal de Osceola (CJAO) en El Centro de Educación Técnica Osceola del Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola (TECO, por sus siglas en inglés). El centro de adiestramiento, ubicado en la Región VII, lleva a cabo el entrenamiento de reclutamiento básico para las personas que deseen convertirse en oficiales juramentados, así como de formación avanzada y especializada para la aplicación de la certificación de ley, la libertad condicional correccional, y los funcionarios de prisiones en toda la Florida Central.

Technical Education Center Osceola (TECO) opens New Criminal Justice Academy Training Facility Commission to deliver all Commission – Osceola County, FL - On October 30, the ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola (CJAO) was held at the Osceola School District's Technical Education Center of Osceola (TECO). The training center, located in Region VII, conducts basic recruit training for individuals wishing to become sworn officers, as well as advanced and specialized training for certified law enforcement, correctional probation, and correctional officers throughout Central Florida. As an extension to the main TECO campus on Simpson Road in Kissimmee, the new facility will provide a state-of-theart learning environment for recruits to complete their training and incumbent officers to enhance existing job skills.

Two suspects arrested for prostitution Osceola County - On October 29, deputies with the Tourist Policing Unit (TPU) responded to an advertisement on-line for escort services. An undercover deputy made arrangements to meet with a female, later identified as Ana Gil-Marin. When the deputy arrived at the location, Gil-Marin introduced him to Marly Diaz-Bastidas, a registered felon who had previous prostitution arrests. The women solicited the

deputy for sex for an agreed upon amount.

Both women were arrested and taken into custody. Deputies recovered $1,249 in cash and other evidence that showed the women were committing prostitution. Based on their statements and the evidence, Gil-Marin and Diaz were arrested and charged with Prostitution and Engaging/Committing/Offering Lewdness. They were booked into the Osceola County Jail.

The match is scheduled to take place on Monday, November 17 at the City of Coimbra’s Municipal Stadium, Sérgio Conceição, in Portugal.

The upcoming contest marks a significant opportunity for Ramos and Estrela to notch their first international appearances at the national team level, as Portugal continues to prepare for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

"It would be very special to me. That's a goal I have traced in mind and hope to achieve this year," said Estrela on the possibility of being called up. "I certainly have to work hard every day in order to be among the 21 players that will represent Portugal in this important competition."

Ramos talked about his history with Estrela throughout their soccer careers.

"Sometimes we joke we have many pictures together for different clubs and now the National Team," said Ramos. "We already were very good friends at Benfica and now, living together in the US and playing for Orlando City has been the same.

Orlando had an impressive first quarter thanks to Nik Vucevic and rookie guard, Elfrid Payton. Vucevic scored 8 of his 19 points in the first quarter while Payton made an impact on defense. Chicago unleashed rookie forward, Doug McDermott, who scored all 12 of his points in the second quarter.

Drawing fouls is something the Magic have yet to master. They sent the Raptors to the line 48 times compared to their 24 attempts. As this young team continues to grow and develop there has been many improvements compared to last season. Their defense and ball movement has improved significantly. Elfrid Payton is making an impact for Orlando’s offense. Not many rookie point guards average 7 assists a game. The Magic have a tough schedule ahead of them with only five of their next 20 games will be played at home. Once they find that missing piece and learn to win, the entire dynamic of this team will change.
