MAGNUM RIFLE

Howa has chambered its Model 1500 bolt-action for Hornady’s hot new .300 PRC.

Based on the beltless .375 Ruger case the .300 PRC was given a 30-degree shoulder with minimal taper and a one-calibre neck length which would allow reloaders to seat long, heavy 212 and 225gn bullets (even 250 grainers) with high ballistic coefficients out farther to avoid reducing case capacity. In some respects, the .300 PRC is a scaled-up version of Hornady’s 6.5 PRC, but it is facing stiff opposition in the crowded .30 magnum field that lists at least nine chamberings. Hornady claims to have identified the shortcomings of each of the competition and eliminated them from their attempts design the perfect 1,000 metre cartridge.

The .300 Win. Mag. is widely regarded as being the most popular .30-calibre magnum ever since it was introduced in 1963. It is undeniably a fine longrange big-game cartridge in the class of the .300 Weatherby Magnum, and gives little away to more powerful super .30s like the .300 UltraMag and .30378 which haven’t affected its pole position. But the .300 PRC was designed with the aim of doing things that the factory .300 Win. Mag. loads aren’t supposed to.

The .300 Win. Mag is a good cartridge and will give very nearly the same velocity as the .300 Weatherby, but alas it has been criticized for having some questionable design features.

For testing, I mounted the Howa with a Zeiss Conquest V6 2-12x50.”

This is the latest precision rifle cartridge specifically designed to shoot long, heavy bullets and deliver increased ballistics at long range targets out of a standard long action.

Any list of successful bolt-action rifles has to include the wildly popular Howa Model 1500 which started out as a clone of Sako’s L61 Finnbear action which appeared in the 1950s.

The Model 1500 gradually progressed, becoming very popular. Most Aussie shooters are familiar with the Howa push-feed action which is a straight forward rugged design.

The .300 PRC under review is contained in the standard long Howa action fitted with a 26-inch barrel having a threaded muzzle.

When shooters learned they could buy a Howa barreled- action and drop it into a choice of stocks - synthetic, walnut and laminate the Howa really took off. Its boost was helped by the way it was chambered for a wide range of cartridges. Naturally, when the 6.5 Creedmoor was added to the line-up sales were boosted even more, and now hunters and long-range shooters can have the Howa in .300 PRC the sky’s the limit for sales.

The .300 PRC was designed to avoid those shortcomings, fit in a .30-06 length action and accommodates really long, heavy projectiles. Initially, Hornady is offering two factory loads for the .300 PRC - a 212gn ELD-X at a nominal 2860fps and a 225gn ELD at 2800fps. Like the .300 Win. Mag. the .300 PRC handles the full range of .30 calibre bullets, and will shoot just about as flat over all hunting ranges as will smaller bore magnums, if bullets from 165 to 200 grains are used and are of the correct shape for long range use.

The .300 PRC is a good cartridge and will give nearly the same velocity as the .300 Win. Mag. from the same barrel length. Many hunters consider the .30 magnums the most versatile of all the magnum cartridges. I can’t disagree with that, since the big .30’s will shoot just as flat over all hunting ranges as will the magnums of smaller bore, if bullets of from 165 to 200 grains are used and are of the correct shape for long-range work. There’s no argument that a big .30 is just as accurate for long range work as the best of the 6.5mm cartridges. As long as you can handle the recoil, you’ll have no trouble landing the bullet where you want it. Happily, Hornady designed the .300 PRC to do just that.

The .300 PRC: it achieves all the benefits of reloading plus longer case life without going to any extra trouble. The superiority of the .300 PRC lies in the cartridge’s throat diameter and geometry.

In 2019 Hornady introduced the .300PRC which was intended to be a specialty cartridge for PRS shooting. The Precision Rifle Series (PRS) is a competition designed to simulate field shooting with long range rifles. Targets are set at unknown distances from relatively close to very far, and competitors shoot throughout the year to gain accumulated points. At one yearend shoot, ranges varied from 200 to 1510 yards. PRS rules limit rifle calibre to .30 or less and muzzle velocity to 3200fps.

H-S Precision stock features an integrated alloy bedding block. Two screws through the sides of the stock are used to centre barrel in forend channel.

The chamber and throat of the .300 PRC are cut to minimum dimensions to be parallel and concentric with the bore; the throat of the chamber and crown of the muzzle are cut perfectly too and free from any burr to deliver match accuracy.

The PRC’s minimum throat spec is 0.3088, giving a bullet only 0.0004” clearance around its diameter. This is a much closer fit of throat than your average .30 magnum.

Hornady understands the necessity for dead-straight chamber alignment and Howa takes the same care to precisely fit the barrel shank and shoulder.

The PRC rimless case has minimal body taper, enabling it to hold the maximum amount of powder for its size. It was designed to be compatible with high density charges of specific slow burning powders and supremely accurate bullets profiled for long range use.

The .300 PRC is designed to be used with a full powder charge that may be slightly compressed, such as Re-26, AR2217 and AR2225.

For hunting a stoutly structured bullet weighing from 175 to 200 grains would be my preferred choices.

The .300 PRC’s chamber throat and case dimensions accommodate such longsters as Hornady’s new 250gn A-Tip without suffering any velocity loss.

This bullet which has a G1 ballistic coefficient (B.C) of 0.878, or double that of 190gn match bullets will appeal to serious target shooters who want to consistently push the envelope of long-range accuracy.

B.C is important only in the regard that a bullet with a higher B.C will retain its velocity and energy over a longer distance. The flattened trajectory means a bullet drops less than a bullet of the same weight and muzzle velocity with a lower B.C. and deliver greater energy on target. The higher B.C. bullet will also drift less in wind.

Within 300 yards or less, B.C isn’t critical to bullet performance. Higher B.Cs don’t have much effect on bullet performance 600 yards and beyond. Of all the qualities that make a good hunting bullet, a high B.C is the least important.

A TRUE H E AV Y H I T T E R

For testing, I mounted the Howa with a Zeiss Conquest V6 2-12x50 in a DNZ 30mm one-piece mount. At 100 yards 3-shot groups with the 212gn ELD-X Precision Hunter measured 0.766, 0.697, 0.929, 0.710 and 0.867 for an average of 0.794. My best group was 0.710 and the worst was 0.929. I saved three rounds of ammo to shoot at 200 yards and they grouped into 2.108”.

The first two shots were only 0.522 apart, but I probably pulled the third shot.

Muzzle velocity with the 212gn ELD-X averaged 2792fps - 68 foot-seconds less than the listed 2860fps.

The Howa 1500 is perfect for the .300 PRC in a hunting rifle. Cartridges feed smoothly, extract and eject easily. Field-ready the outfit weighed 4.2kgs, better suited for the plains than the mountains, a role where the .300 PRC will flourish.

I’m looking forward to doing more work with the .300 PRC. First impressions are that improvements in case design and chamber dimensions will earn the .300 PRC a prominent spot among the .30 magnums, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it supplant the .300 Win. Mag. - at least on the target range.

In recent years, Hornady has become a leader in terms of cartridge development and the company’s advancements in the field of cartridge and bullet designs have been phenomenal. I suspect that the .300 PRC isn’t going to be the last innovation we see either, I’m just trembling with anticipation to see what comes next.

THE BLASER R8 PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS

Ask any hunting aficionado to pick a rifle and nine times out of 10 a model from Europe would be their choice. So rich is the hunting culture throughout that continent it’s reflected in the excellent firearms used and during the past decade one action has been the option for serious hunters - the straight-pull. This action still uses a bolt to lock into the barrel but movement of the bolt to chamber to unload a fired/unfired case is a linear one, unlike the standard turn-bolt repeating action based on the Mauser M98.

There are many makes based on the straight-pull action and a fair percentage use a replaceable barrel system, giving flexibility to have one stock/action to which you can apply different calibres simply by changing the barrel and bolt-head if required.

bolt raceways, trigger sears, bolt stop and release provisions and a steel recoil lug which mates to a slot on the underside of the barrel.

The barrels come in calibres ranging from .204 Ruger up to .500 Jeffery and all that’s required is the appropriate bolt head and the calibre is changed in minutes. Barrels are available in either standard, semi-weight or match profiles in standard, magnum or special calibres.

The test rifle had a 580mm barrel made by the cold- hammer forging technique, internally the finish showing no evidence of tooling or machining marks. Options such as barrel fluting and Express Hi-Viz sights are also available.

These rifles are expensive as they’re technically brilliant and engineered to extremely high standards. Fortunately for the discerning Australian hunter such rifles are available here and the cream of the crop is made by Blaser of Germany, who incorporate such gun-making marques as Mauser and Sauer under their umbrella but as separate entities.

Blaser’s R8 model is arguably the pinnacle of the repeating straight-pull action design, the Professional Success made to be used in the most testing hunting conditions with complete reliability and application.

Outdoor Sporting Agencies supplied Australian Shooter with the Blaser R8 Professional Success with a .30-06 Springfield barrel and superb Blaser rifle- scope and saddle mount.

AT A GLANCE The rifle and parts come with comprehensive instruction manuals, both rifle and optic having many features you wouldn’t normally find on conventional equivalents. There’s a synthetic thumbhole stock which cradles the steel/ aluminium R8 receiver platform, together with detachable trigger group/ magazine assembly and 580mm sporter barrel in .30-06 Springfield. The rifle weighs 3.38kg, measures 1020mm STOCK

BOLT This is characterised by a solid aluminium shroud with the internal componentry of the safety system, bolt handle, firing pin and locking systems.

Two steel ‘forks’ protrude from the front of the bolt assembly and mate with corresponding raceways in the body of the receiver platform, the bolt handle also made of steel with a small polymer knob. The bolt has a toggle which lets it move around 40mm or so on its pivoting axis and this is instrumental in locking the front of the bolt into the rear of the barrel.

There are alternate stock configurations but the review rifle sported the one-piece 750mm synthetic thumbhole in dark green.

The full pistol grip is pronounced but fills the hand perfectly, while the scalloping lines the contour of the master hand around the grip area and the leading hand around the fore-end grip. Holding the stock, it morphs into the user’s arms and becomes one with the hunter. A thin 10mm sorbothane pad just the right thickness to absorb recoil but not too heavy to look awkward.

RECEIVER AND BARREL The receiver platform assembly is sheer engineering genius. The platform, which accepts the bolt and interchangeable barrel, is a mix of aluminium and steel parts precisely inletted into the body of the stock. It houses the

TRIGGER AND MAGAZINE SYSTEM This sees both mechanisms incorporated into a single unit which is removable, giving the rifle an additional security feature, the entire unit made from high strength polymer with metallic parts such as the magazine spring.

There’s no way the rifle can be fired without the detachable trigger/ magazine unit installed. This clips into place firmly but is easily removed by pressing the retaining tabs on either side of the magazine body.

Internally the magazine is of a rotary design and accepts four rounds in the .30-06 Springfield calibre, feeding rounds easily for the linear bolt to chamber at lightning-fast pace.

COCKING/DE-COCKING The large thumb-operated lever allows you to manually cock or de-cock the firing mechanism even with a round chambered, the lever serving as a release which permits the bolt to be cycled or the action opened. Gently thumbing the safety lever forward a few millimetres allows the bolt to be cycled towards the rear (if in the closed position).

2.8-20X50 IC SCOPE AND SADDLE MOUNT These are sold separately. Expensive, yes, but quality unsurpassed. The saddle mount is quickly attached to the barrel using two static, onepiece locating lugs which mate with recesses on the right of the barrel and is secured by adjustable camming levers on the opposite side of the mount. This system guarantees no loss of zero when the scope/ mounts are removed as one.

CONCLUSION The Blaser R8 Professional Success is at the pinnacle of sporting rifle layout, tailor- made for hunters who demand the best to deal with everything Mother Nature can muster. More ornate models of the R8 are available with exhibition grade walnut and commissioned engraving as per customer specifications, if money is no object. But the Professional Success with interchangeable barrel system, detachable trigger/ magazine, manual cocking/de-cocking safety system and one-piece highdensity polymer stock mated to a steel/aluminium receiver plat- form is an engineering marvel.

It displays Germanic ingenuity and is a marque the serious hunter can subscribe to. Join the circle - invest and never look back. The rifle retails for $7105 (with one barrel in specific calibres) and additional barrels and bolt-heads are available on request.

Blaser is a name synonymous with innovative highquality firearms, but just recently, they have entered the marketplace with their new range of riflescopes.

IC ILLUMINATION CONTROL This is a unique feature where a Blaser R8 or K95 rifle communicates with the scope. Once the rifle is cocked, the dot automatically turns on. The brightness of the dot will be the same as the last time it was used. The intensity may be controlled by rotating the right turret to the desired setting.

Rifles without the IC cocking slide are simply activated by manually pulling out the right turret and rotating to the desired brightness. A battery-saving device will automatically switch off when the rifle is in a vertical or lying position and reactivate once the rifle is back to the shoulder.

QUICK DISTANCE CONTROL (QDC) This is Blaser’s answer to taking accurate long shots while hunting in the field. Its precision and robust mechanics enable consistently reliable repeat accuracy every time. A new feature is an additional second lockable position on the zero stop. You simply lock the desired point of impact, for example 100 metres, at the first stop. The second stop will automatically be set four centimetres above the first setting, thereby effectively increasing your pointblank range.

BLASER’S impressive reputation with rifles, which include the R8 and K95, drilling combinations and F-series shotguns is second to none and that reputation looks to continue into a new line of quality hunting optics.

If the target is outside this range, all that is required is to lift the top elevation turret out of the locked position and rotate the necessary number of clicks for the correct distance. When this is done the turret cannot be lowered and allows the user a clear view of the elevation clicks.

It also provides a reminder of the original setting. The turret offers an 80cm elevation adjustment when the QDC is set at 100 meters.

There 3 new models in the Blaser range: • The Intelligent - 1-7x28IC • The All Rounder - 2.8-20x50IC • The Light Giant - 4-20x58IC The All Rounder 2.8-20x50 is the focus of this review. At first appearance, this is a scope of the highest quality and finish. Something one would expect from a company of Blaser’s reputation. It is a compact, very solidly built instrument, sporting a Zeiss rail for mounting. Overall length is 343mm (13.5”). Weight is a hefty 770g (27.16 oz) and a 36mm tube gives it a built like a battleship appearance. Click adjustments are 1cm/100m (0.39”/109 yds) and eye relief of 90mm (3.5”). Light transmission a bright 93%.

The Illuminated reticle is in the first focal plane in all models, which is somewhat unusual in a hunting scope. The reason for this, is their desire to achieve absolute precision and zero tolerance when changing magnification. I have never been a fan of this concept in hunting scopes, as I have found some reticles become too heavy and cover too much of the target at high magnification. Rest assured this is not the case with the Blaser. I found the sight picture to be perfect. While most manufacturers struggle to make fine illuminated reticle dots, the Blaser’s fine reticle allowed me to easily place the dot on the head of a Starling, perched on a power line 200 metres away.

Blaser has introduced major changes in turret configuration, the first being the windage turret on the lefthand side. The second change is having the illumination turret on the right, which also incorporates the parallax focus. The reasoning for this is to allow easier focusing while the rifle is at the shoulder. There is a 100-metre locked position on the parallax adjustment. Thus, one only needs to pull the turret out and rotate for the desired distance.

Only in combination with top-class target optics can hunters use the potential of their rifle to the fullest. Therefore it is even more important that function and handling of the optics are perfectly tuned to the use in the field . If the design of the riflescope is then optimally aligned with the firearm, the result is a combination of unparalleled elegance and performance.

Each scope in the range has its own unique features and functions. For example, the Intelligent 1-7x28 IC is the perfect big game rifle scope for shooting at close and running game. A special feature of the Intelligent, is that when the magnification is set on 4-power or below the dot size automatically increases to allow quick, easy target acquisition. The Light Giant 4-20x58 IC is popular with the European hunter, who hunts the forest floor (usually from a ‘’hochsitz’’) under moonlight conditions. The 58mm objective lens transmits 7% more light than that of the traditional 56mm, making it possible to identify game under extremely low lighting conditions.

The All Rounder 2.8-20x50 is, as the name implies, the perfect all-rounder.

Whether hunting sambar in the thick Victorian bush, or tahr on a New Zealand mountain top, there is no better scope up for the job. The feature

that most impressed me about this scope, was its image quality. Over 30 years as a professional photographer I have developed a deep appreciation of great optics. The brightness and clarity of this riflescope was superb, especially on its maximum 20 power. I own, and have looked through, a lot of expensive glass. Nearly all seem to lose light and sharpness to some extent when the power is cranked up. However, I did not notice any change with the Blaser, its definition and clarity are exceptional.

To confirm the precision of the scope’s movement, an accurate rifle was needed. A R8 Blaser in 6.5 Creedmoor filled the requirements perfectly.

Throughout all the initial testing, the windage and elevation movements where spot on with bullet holes precisely following the 1 cm clicks around the target.

Anyone considering upgrading the scope on their existing Blaser rifle, or adding an additional barrel, should check out the new Infinity range of Blaser riflescopes. I consider my Blasers to be among the best hunting rifles I have ever owned. These new riflescopes may not be cheap, however, when you consider them as a lifetime investment – with Blaser’s flawless service - it is only fitting they are considered the ‘’Stradivarii’’ of hunting riflescopes.

MAUSER M18

When I think of Mauser rifles I am instantly reminded of an article I read some 20 years ago by the one and only Alaskan Master Guide, Phil Shoemaker, about his much loved ‘Ol Ugly’, as it has been dubbed, featuring his famed Mauser 458.

In opening, when Phil discusses the Mauser he states it’s “as reliable as...well a Mauser.” Phil relies on his Mauser everyday in the Alaskan wilderness as a backup rifle when guiding Coastal Brown bear. I have held a soft spot for anything Mauser since reading that article in my youth so when Mauser announced they had built a rifle for the people at a more affordable price, I was instantly intrigued.

Given a new Mauser M98 is priced upward of 10k, I was shocked that these rifles are closer to the 1k mark. After handling the new Mauser M18 cycling the silky smooth action and feeling the super crisp trigger I couldn’t believe they can build such a rifle for such a cost. I had to have one, so promptly ordered a rifle in 300 win mag.

My Mauser M18 300 win mag arrived and I was eager to strip it down and try and find how the famous Mauser company had put such a quality rifle together at such a price.

So the bolt is not of original M98 design and they’ve dropped the control round feed for a modern push feed design featuring three locking lugs up front, twin plunger type extractors and a small claw extractor recessed in one lug. The arguments for push feed -vs- controlled round feed could be had all day but this action is a push feed and it is as Phil says about his ‘Ol Ugly’ as reliable as a Mauser and no amount of cycling could get this thing to fail. The three lug design allows for a 60 degree bolt throw which allows for super fast cycling and low scope mounting.

The blot knob is oversized again for positive cycling and ease of use with gloves. The bolt body is huge and is similar to those found on much more expensive rifles and also features a red cocking indicator and three position safety ensuring the bolt can be locked down, an important feature in a hard use rifle as accidental opening in heavy brush is eliminated. The trigger is another highlight of the rifle and is incredibly crisp breaking at around 2lbs but externally adjustable up to 4lbs via a hex screw in the trigger body.

There is nothing fancy about the polymer stock like ‘Ol Ugly’ but what it lacks in style it makes up for in function. It fits like a glove with solid palm swells for both right and left handers also featuring soft touch rubber inserts in both the pistol and fore grip which work extremely well in tough conditions. Another feature is a removable recoil pad which offers a storage box for a bore snake. I can’t believe how handy this has been.

On the range it was exactly what I expected from the hammer forged Krupp barrel. These are the same barrels as those used on some of the top European sniper rifles such as the Blaser R93 tactal used by the Australian SASR. On the range the rifle grouped under 1 inch with everything I threw at it, favouring the RWS 165gn HIT rounds. The rifle is guaranteed to shoot sub MOA for five shots not the regular three (a testament to the confidence Mauser have in the build).

Once zeroed at 100 metres I set about testing the rifle at distance with the Zeiss conquest 2-12x50 V6 which I mounted to the rifle. Setting an A4 sized target at 500 metres, utilising the Zeiss App I referenced the drop chart for the RWS 165grn round. Winding the scope up 26 clicks as indicated on the app, I lay down behind the gun which was now mounted on a bipod as it would in the field for cross gully shots. A five shot volley landed 4 within a six inch circle and I pulled one shot still landing inside the A4 target sheet. A very impressive performance and one I have found very consistent with all the modern European built guns from the Mauser, Sauer and Blaser stable.

Removable recoil pad allows one to store a bore snake or spare ammunition. This has proven to be a very handy feature and I’ve used it more than you would think In the field, the rifle was in its element and the worse the conditions got, the better it performed.

I used the rifle when hunting Sambar using hounds, topped with a Zeiss Conquest V6 1.1- 6x24.

This was an incredible outfit, fast handling and pointed and swung like a shotgun aided by the perfect stock design and sure grip rubber inserts. The action accepts Remington’s long action mounts which allowed various mounting and scope options in the field.

I used the rifle on a backpack hunt topped with the 2-12x50 V6 where conditions were terrible, facing days of wet and freezing conditions and it was flawless. The bolt is designed for fast field stripping if need be which is an asset in such conditions and would be an ideal rifle for a New Zealand or Alaska style hunt where conditions are extremely hard on firearms and gear. It is secure in the hands even when soaked with rain and frozen and the large bolt handle is an asset when using gloves or hands are freezing. It feels as nice lying down for cross gully shots off a bipod as it does swinging onto a running target.

The quality of this build is nothing short of exceptional and one which could be expected from a rifle twice the price. I think a new standard has been set in regards to quality and price when we look at this rifle.

The M18 is understated and purpose built. It’s not fancy by any means but it’s built to perform.

It is reliable and functional despite abuse. I use my rifles and if it doesn’t perform or shows any sign of weakness, rarely will be carried afield again. I look forward to using this rifle as it was intended and hope someday it may wear the scars of ‘Ol Ugly’.

Miroku’s MK38 Trap THE GUN THAT CAN DO IT ALL!

The Mk38 has also been around for as long as I can remember and it is the foundation of the Miroku fine range of shotguns . A revamped engraving on the receiver of the gun is only the beginning. Other improvements include stock dimensions and interchangeable chokes. A change of fore-end style has also been added. Throw in a small mid-sight bead to assist with gun mount and all of a sudden, you have a firearm that is more than capable for the purpose for what it was designed.

I have owned several Miroku’s during almost four decades of sports shooting and I can say without fear of contradiction they are well built guns suited to the demands of the Australian shooter, whether it be for Sporting Clays or Trap shooting. Their prices over the years, like everything else, have increased, but you can still purchase one of these latest Mk38s for around $2000 if you care to shop around.

The barrels Finished in a deep lustrous blue, the barrels of the Mk38 Sporter were designed to perfection. Measuring 30” (760mm) in length, they were topped by a parallel ventilated rib finished with a non-reflective surface. A barrel-type white bead was fitted at the muzzle, while a smaller white bead was located midway down the rib to assist with correct gun mounting - to overcome canting of the gun.

John McDougall took great delight in shooting the new Mk38 Trap over the traps. The pulls were fast, but the Miroku’s patterns were effective with both first- and second-barrel shots.

The balance of the gun was good and the height of the new stock dimensions perfect for great gun mount and an ideal sighting plane down the barrels. The stock wood was fine and for a gun around the $2000 mark, it represented excellent value.

The chamber end of the gun features the typical two-piece ejectors that have lasted the test of time along with 23⁄4” (70mm) chambering. This will accommodate all Clay loads from 34 to 24g and a wide range of steel shot loads offered in the 70mm case length

The Mk38 Trap over the traps A visit to the club found me shooting the Mk38 Trap gun on one of their many grounds of Down the Line (DTL) Trap. The phono pulls made for an excellent opportunity, with fast releases and targets smashed by the three-quarter choke first barrel and chips broken with the second full-choked barrel.

The receiver The receiver has undergone a complete change of engraving from the previous model and looks pleasant to the eye without being overdone.

Unfortunately, it has been some time since I last shot DTL and several secondbarrel shots had to be fired to hit elusive targets. Still, the Mk38 Trap was certainly up to the challenge.

The finish on the surfaces of the Mk38 receiver was perfection with a satin steel look rather than a highly reflective shine. This is a benefit for hunters while waterfowling and will cut down on reflected light shining from the receiver, though it is not really a worry for clay target shooters.

The stock dimensions were good and the gun fitted well without having to alter the adjustable comb piece, though this can be simply undertaken using the Allen key provided with the gun.

The position of the safety catch cum barrel selector was in the traditional spot on the top tang. This has become standard for Miroku shotguns. The top lever was substantial, nicely engraved and also imparted with a nonslip surface for positive operation when hunting in wet conditions.

The MK38 trap is excellent value for a well-made gun and will prove a sound choice for a rigorous shooting discipline.

It worked smoothly and positively when opening the gun with the least amount of effort. Design of the triggerguard was generous enough for the shooter to use thin leather gloves, should the weather be cold. The triggerguard was well rounded and complemented the elegance and style of the gun’s overall lines. The triggerfoot, although non-adjustable, was well designed and comfortable to use. The trigger releases on the inertia-operated selector mechanism were around 4lb for each trigger, which is quite within safety limits and nice to the release. Metal-to-wood fitting about the receiver was without fault, which is quite an exception, as many entry-level guns have minor flaws. Miroku obviously has its manufacturing down to fine tolerances. The metal-to-metal fitting of the barrels to the receiver was perfection.

The stock and fore-end The walnut stock and fore-end of the updated Mk38 is new in both design and dimensions. Mk38 has an adjustable comb piece for personal stock adjustment. A new-style recoil pad has also been thrown in as the Australian Miroku distributor, Outdoor Sporting Agencies, has a greater input into what it has deemed to be the demands of Australian shooters.

Summary This gun is set to appeal to shooters who are entering either Sporting Clays or Trap shooting for the first time. The Mk38 is an extremely reliable model from Miroku and will enable the shooter to advance to the next level of competition gun.

Mind you, the Mk38, once accustomed, could just as well serve the shooter for the entirety of their shooting journey. They are great guns, made to last and will provide top-notch service and reliability. The Mk38 has a warranty for a period of five years with their mechanism.

55 YEARS OF

Miroku Magic It is somewhat surprising, that in a country where private ownership of sporting firearms is almost impossible, a company can produce guns over several generations that are as good (or better) than similar firearms from other countries.

This is the case with Miroku in Japan, whose reputation for producing high quality firearms for itself and other, under contract, such as Browning, has been well established in Australia for over half a century.

When I first started doing product reviews for local shooting magazines in the 1970’s, the Miroku brand was already well established, thanks to Malcolm Fuller, who founded Fuller Firearms and pioneered the importation of Japanese sporting firearms from the late 1960’s.

Over the past 5 decades, numerous Miroku U/O models have been released in various grades and configurations. About 15 years ago, Miroku introduced what looked like a side plated Grade 6 Limited Edition, but used the box lock action behind the side plates, and these expanded the area for the high level engraving that was applied to that model. In my Miroku travels, I have come across Model 7000’s, Model 9000’s and other numbered models such as the Model 800, as well as the models currently listed.

These include the MK38, MK60, MK10, MK11, MK 60 and MK70 and each of these models has variations to suit the applications for which they have been designed – Trap, Skeet, Sport.

MK10 Sporter Deluxe Waterfowl Edition

Miroku did (and does) not only make shotguns and manufacture lever action centrefire and rimfire rifles under its own brand as well under license for Winchester and more recently, under the Browning brand.

These products include the Browning X-Bolt centrefire rifles.

While Miroku shotguns have been sold in overseas markets under Browning, Winchester and Charles Daly brands, in Australia, Miroku has always maintained its identity and had gathered a multitude of fans for its under and over guns. I am one of them.

After WW2, the ban on the manufacture of sporting firearms in Japan was lifted in 1951, and the philosophy of many Japanese companies at the time that their markets were in export and not local, led Miroku back to the manufacture of sporting firearms.

Its first significant product was a side-by-side shotgun. I am not sure what this one looked like, but I acquired a side-by-side Miroku in the late 1970’s (purchased new) that still resides in the gun safe of one of my old friends. That side-by-side was a plain looking gun by Miroku’s later shotgun standards, but a robust and reliable field gun all the same.

Miroku wanted to go one better, and using Browning’s Superposed under and over as a guide, re-engineered the design.

The early history of Miroku models is a little clouded. From my recollections, the early model Miroku under and overs imported to Australia by Fuller Firearms were model 700’s.

As well as barrel length variations usually ranging from 28” to 32”,and stock design to suit the application, model variations have mainly been in the barrel configuration of the chokes and rib.

The most important feature of any shotgun is how it fits and every Miroku shotgun I have owned and used has done this for me, with the exception of length of pull, which is all to do with the shooter and nothing to do with the gun.

Most off-the-shelf shotguns have a length of pull (the distance from the back of the butt to the trigger) of around 370- 375mm. If the shooter has time to mount the gun into a shooting position, a longer length of pull may not be an issue, but if the gun needs to be quickly brought to the shoulder, a longer length of pull may result in the butt snagging on the shoulder. It may be that a well fitted length of pull is more comfortable to handle.

Speaking of wood, many Miroku guns I have seen and owned have been fitted with outstanding walnut stocks.

MK10 Sporter Competition

One other enduring aspect of Miroku shotguns is their durability and reliability. Each of my guns is still tight and work with 100% reliability, with the inertia operated single trigger giving no problems.

In the final analysis, all a buyer needs to do is compare a Miroku with any other under and over of an equivalent grade. The side plated Model 11 Limited Edition Anniversary gun is a good example. This is one of the highest grade Miroku shotguns yet produced, with only 54 being produced to celebrate the 54-year connection with the Fuller-Highland- OSA relationship.

The comprehensively engraved gun, with its Grade V walnut stock wood and premium accessories costs less than $10,000 and will stand comparison with European under and overs costing 2-4X as much.

ML11 Sport Shotgun

The ML 11 Sport Adjustable has some interesting stock dimensions which complement the concept of this being an all-round shotgun for most clay target disciplines.

DESIGNED AS A COMPETITION GUN SUITABLE FOR TRAP AND SPORTING

ML 11 has been fine-tuned with the addition of an adjustable comb to make it as versatile as a competition shotgun can be.

Stock and fore-end This ML 11 Sport features an oil- finished walnut stock with very neutral dimensions. The specification sheet shows cast at heel is roughly 1mm and at toe approximately 3.75mm so there’s virtually no cast that I could see and it fitted me well as a left-hander. My right-handed mates felt the same which confirmed its straight proportions.

It’s close in size and feel to the legendary Browning B25 206 Sporter of a generation ago but with a medium high rib. We could all mount the gun comfortably and look straight along the rib and enjoy an upright head position and excellent view of the targets.

The well-made adjustable stock worked perfectly and while I didn’t need to tweak it for Skeet or Sporting it would certainly be a benefit for anyone wanting to establish a Trap shooting setting to make the gun shoot higher, something like 70/30 rather than its current 50/50. For fine-tuning your head and eye position, the lateral adjustment to the comb would make an ideal fit for the individual shooter. Stock measurements are a fine example of the lower end of Sporting/Skeet capacity, the stock having a 39.7mm drop at comb and 60.3mm drop at heel with 375mm length of pull. This bucks the modern trend towards a higher stock structure for Sporting and Skeet competition guns (35mm drop at comb and approximately 50mm drop at heel) which centre the patterns a little higher (say 60 per cent of the pellets above and 40 per cent below sight point).

The classic Miroku boxlock action provides excellent ejectors and bank vault- like action lock-up.

The well-shaped adjustable trigger ensures maximum finger comfort.

The addition of the adjustable comb increases the ML 11 versatility enormously and allows further fine-tuning for perfect gun-fit and definitely allows for crossing between disciplines for those prepared to stick with one gun and do some patterning to see what settings suit best.

The stock has a thin Decelerator pad which is still good at soaking up recoil. It’s comfortable when mounted in the shoulder pocket. The foreend is of the beavertail-style Beavertail fore-ends are usually associated with Trap guns where a precise and repeatable grip is an advantage but with the increasingly competitive nature of sporting clays world-wide, the feeling of precision in gun movement the beavertail provides is an interesting addition to a sporting gun, especially one specifically designed to cross over between disciplines.

Barrels and rib The rib is 11mm wide over the action and tapers to 8mm at the muzzle, slightly broader than the black action ML 11 but this configuration in combination with the stock dimensions is the secret to this gun’s outstanding performance. Once again the rib between the barrels is ventilated and there’s one fine white centre bead and an effective green Hi-Viz front-sight at the narrower muzzle end.

Action The ML 11 Sport features a silver nitride action with fine decorative full length border on both sides in an almost fluorescent orange accent. The words Miroku ML 11 Sport are engraved on the bottom of the action in the same colour scheme and may not be to everyone’s taste but I rather liked it. Older readers may remember a B25 or B125 Browning trap gun called something like the GT with a similar look from about 30 years ago.

As noted before, Miroku shotguns have a full width hinge pin which provides a substantial surface area for smooth opening and closing.

Shooting impressions Two of my friends and I tested the ML 11 Sport on Skeet targets shot gun down. It handled remarkably well and gave that particular feel of being in control of the targets rather than the other way round.

Pigs, scrub bulls and buffaloes are in abundance for hunters who make the trek to the Northern Territory.

About 12 months ago, my mate Darryl and I were sitting around having a few beers after just finishing the 2017 Coolalinga Pig and Pussy Hunt.

We kept talking about how all these blokes in the competition had traveled far and wide to chase these huge pigs for the comp. After a few more beers, Darryl looked at me and said: “Bugger this! Next dry season let’s get a crew together and go for a hunt through the Territory, but let’s not just go for a few days – let’s do this properly.”

So after a few more beers we decided that 2½ weeks’ straight hunting would probably do the trick and scratch that proverbial itch we all get when time between hunts has been too long. So there we were standing at the airport; Mark, Dean and myself, all exhausted after two weeks away on a work trip. We all work in the Australian firearms and hunting industry and arrived back in Melbourne only 24 hours earlier. You would think that after spending that much time together around nothing but guns and ammo we would probably be a bit over it, but there we were, heading off for another two weeks-plus straight hunting – but this time we were heading north, far north!

Unfortunately for us the only flight we were able to make was the red eye, meaning we landed at 4am with a full day of packing quads and shopping ahead of us. This wasn’t really an issue, though, as we were all bursting with anticipation at what the weeks to come would hold.

ArrivaL After a few hours’ sleep the boys and I headed out to Coolalinga Guns and Ammo to meet my good mate Darryl, who owns the shop. Darryl, Nathan, the boys and I then started the process of picking up our gear and heading back to Darryl’s, where we spent the afternoon setting up and packing the endless convoy of 4WDs, quads, buggies and trailers with camping gear and what Mark described as “too much beer”.

The next day our adventure officially began. We had an early start and headed south on the Stuart Highway before making a turn and heading to the western floodplains, where we would be hunting a station approximately 100,000 hectares in size. The station varied from seemingly endless barren scrub to thick pandanus and then opening up into immense lush open flood plains, filthy with pigs. Although bacon was to be our main quarry on the station there were plenty of other species of game to target, including donkeys, scrub bulls, buffalo and wild dogs. As we soon found out, donkeys enjoyed hanging around the scrub on the driveway, which was 50km long. After dispatching a few with the .375 H+H on the way in we headed to the staff quarters of the station where we would be spending the next five days. Five-star hunting accommodation for the first week, which in hindsight probably would have been best if left to last.

Hog heaveN After spending an hour or so unpacking we were off, and better still we had a guide. Benny knew the station like the back of his hand and decided it was time to hit the floodplains for an afternoon session. After traveling no more than five minutes down the road it began, and over the radio we heard those words we had traveled so far to hear: “Pigs, pigs pigs!” This was followed by the distant sounds of shots finding their mark; five hogs down and it was on.

As we approached the floodplain Benny gave us an idea of where to go and where not to go on the floodplains, adding that if we did sink we should try to keep the quad between us and the crocs – which, as we soon found out, were everywhere. As we cruised the floodplains like a giant motorised emu-bob, pigs exploded from all manner of directions, including a few bigger boars in the 80kg-plus region.

We’re gonna need A Bigger GuN The boys and I decided it would be a good idea to split up and try our hand at some different tactics. We were shown a few days earlier where some good creek beds were and decided to check them out.

Darryl, Nathan and I headed off and about 30 minutes into our walk found ourselves listening to a big scrub bull walking through some very thick bush. After listening for 10 minutes or so we decided it was worth checking out. Nathan and I slowly stalked in waiting to get a glimpse of what we had been listening to for the past 15 minutes. He finally appeared bellowing below a tree and was only 40 metres straight in front of us.

But then… “CRUNCH”, as one of us stood on a pile of sticks. The big bull stood up and was onto us straight away. I’d had a good look at the bull and decided he was mine. I raised the Sauer 404 – chambered in the .375 Holland and Holland – to my shoulder, placed the classic German No.4 reticle on his shoulder and squeezed away.

Boom! I followed instantly with a reload, ready to take a second shot, but the bull was down, the 300 grain Hornady DGX bonded bullet dropping the bull in his tracks. After walking over and examining the trophy I was over the moon to say the least. This was what we had come here for and things were just getting better and better. This bull had instantly put a smile on my face, which couldn’t be wiped off for the rest of the day, and was instantly reassuring about my choice of rifle and ammunition.

Luck was on our side, the stars had aligned and we found ourselves in a normally sweltering environment comfortably cruising floodplains looking for shade where unsuspecting mobs of pigs would be hanging out. This became our main attack method in an area with so much permanent water. This endless search for boars on the floodplains continued for a few days with many hogs biting the dust or mud.

Although we spent days on just one floodplain, words cannot explain just how big this country really is and we barely even scraped the surface.

Not ten minutes after moving on Nathan also stumbled upon another scrub bull but this time he was really, really close. The thick pandanus and acacia scrub surrounding the billabong we were hunting was filled with game trails and was a maze to navigate. The plus side of this was it enabled us to get quite close to game without them knowing we were close; the downside was hunting dangerous game in close quarters was extremely perilous, especially if an animal was wounded. Nathan managed to walk up on a sleeping bull at a range of around 30m. After preparing for his shot and myself standing back-up he gave me the nod that he was going to take his shot. His .300 Win Mag erupted, blowing dirt and leaves everywhere. “You missed!” I said as the bull rose from the ground. “How could he have missed at that distance and aiming straight for his neck?!”

At that exact moment, as the bull ran into some even thicker scrub, another bull appeared from nowhere. Nathan, being quite quick on the trigger, raised his gun and took aim at the brindle bull – and with a perfect shot the bull was done.

We decided that even though the second bull was down it was our obligation to follow up on Nath’s first shot and somehow decipher whether the bull had been wounded or not. After finding no blood we decided to go full CSI on the situation and discovered his bullet had hit a tree and deflected the shot significantly and as a result completely missed the bull. This was a good end result as none of us wanted to chase after a wounded bull in some very thick nastylooking bush. The end result of this encounter was Nathan admitting he needed a bigger gun.

South of heaveN After some time at the station we decided it was time to move on to our next destination in the Daly region where – surprise, surprise – we would be chasing pigs. This was quite strange as most of my life I have traveled north in search of pigs, but this time we traveled further and further south. We arrived on the property mid-afternoon and soon found our camp, which was at the top of an eroded river bank in a small clearing about 50 metres from a beautiful freshwater creek lined with large gums, pandanus and sand. This was truly a beautiful campsite and the creek that ran through it was like something from a David Attenborough documentary.

The plan was simple: follow the creeks with bikes either side of the creek and flush the pigs. To say this plan worked was an understatement. Not five minutes after leaving the track we were on. Pigs erupted everywhere like a swarm of bees, followed by the sound of gunfire. They were falling thick and fast – and we were only 10 minutes into the day. The day continued in much the same way with every few kilometres another mob being put up and a large number of pigs being taken out during the day.

Before we knew it we had traveled 70km up one creek and started to realise the possibility that we may not have enough fuel to make it back.

The call was quickly made and we decided to make the long trip home with one bike coughing and spluttering into camp!

As we drove in and I laid my eyes on the creek I had only one thing on my mind: fishing. Even though we had traveled all this way to hunt I rarely go anywhere without some sort of fishing rod, so on this trip I brought six! After setting up my swag I soon found myself throwing jerkbaits at snags along the creek, ever mindful of the snapping handbags that were occasionally spotted along the creek. After about 20 minutes, four sooty grunter and two small barra, I decided I’d better head back and actually do a bit of work setting up camp.

The next few days were quite different from our previous days’ hunting.

We had gone from hunting an area with such an abundance of water to the polar opposite. We knew that there were plenty of billabongs on the station but figuring out which waterholes the pigs would visit at different times of the day would be the difficult part. After a day or so of periodically checking billabongs we hadn’t had too much success so a change of plan was needed. Darryl had mentioned some spring-fed creek about 40km away on a different section of the station where he had had good success on a previous trip.

We headed off and after an hour of eating some of the thickest bulldust known to man we arrived at the first creek.

Troy had been hunting this property for a long time and knew it like the back of his hand. He told us of large mobs of buffalo on the property with many mature bulls, which we hoped to take over the following few days.

After a quick meet and greet with the station owner and his family we were off to camp for the night, where we had a big meal and prepared our gear for the next day. We set off first thing at around 6am through the winding tracks of the station to where it eventually opened up into sparse scrub separated by low-lying creeks and large rocky hills. We followed in convoy, with Troy up front, making our way to the tops of the hills trying to spot buff at a distance.

After an hour or so we spotted our first mob and Deano was up first.

We waited behind as Troy and Deano headed off into the scrub. Minutes later a distant “BOOF” echoed through the bush, followed by a number of shots. Soon after, the radio fired and a very happy Dean informed us that he had taken a good bull. We all eventually rolled in to inspect Dean’s prize lying on the ground. Little did we know but this was where the real work began. The hide on water buffalo is some of the thickest skin you could ever imagine, six or seven times that of a cow or bull. Throw that in with the sheer size and weight of these animals and you can imagine how difficult and time-consuming these animals are to process. After the processing was all done and dusted it was my turn on strike.

The end zonE Our final leg of the trip was upon us! I had been eagerly waiting for the last part of the trip as it was our chance to take a mature buffalo bull. We had seen plenty of buff along the way so far but no big bulls. We headed south again to Katherine, where we picked up a few supplies and met up with our guide for the next few days, Troy.

Eagerly we set off and the search began for another herd of buffalo, preferably before they found us. We eventually came across what we had been looking for and spotted a lone bull at the very top of a rocky hill around 500m away. The plan was simple: try and close the gap on the bull without being seen or scented. This soon became a reality as we slowly came within the firing distance of the bull at around 140m. I had sighted my .375 H+H dead on at 100m so I knew the bullet would hit exactly where I placed the centre of the reticle. I took rest on a small tree and placed the cross hairs on the buff’s chest for a heart-lung shot, exhaled and squeezed the trigger.

The shot was good and the 300gr projectile spun the bull instantly. The bull dropped his head and turned to run before I followed up with two more consecutive shots with solids, the second taking out the spine and dropping the bull on the spot.

As we slowly walked up on the downed animal the excitement was overwhelming but real caution must be shown as these animals are extremely dangerous – as many hunters have found over the years. The bull was amazing, everything I had hoped for from a hunt like this and a perfect way to end the trip before starting our long journey home.

2020 will go down as one of the toughest years in history for a water fowl hunter.

The Victorian Waterfowl season and bag limits were modified in such a way it left most hunters disheartened and bewildered at the same time. The season was shortened and the daily limit was so low it became unjustified.

As the shortened season was announced and the start delayed the impact of Covid-19 made things worse bringing more challenges. The pandemic was affecting all hunters and restricting most to their local areas. A lot couldn’t even venture out past there house let alone cross the border into NSW.

entry approved he was adamant I would be granted access across the border. After a lengthy discussion on the phone. I hung up with extreme excitement and a grin from ear to ear with a slight glimmer of hope I could start packing the Ute. The application was made and as the week progressed the anticipation for the return email was nail biting. By the end of the week I was all approved and it was now time to pack the Ute and head off for the trip across into NSW.

As the regular season came to a close there was still the glimmer of hope the national pandemic would soon be over and we could look forward to the rice season carrying out mitigation permits for farmers over the border.

As farmers went about their business preparing rice bays. Plowing leveling and sowing seed we could only sit back and imagine the many thoughts running through their heads. The cost of water, monitoring soil conditions and future weather forecasts were only a few factors to be considered for the up and coming season.

Each and every year parts of Northern Victoria and New South Wales contribute significantly to the rice industry. During the months of October November and December many regional towns benefit from Hunters traveling to hunt and harvest waterfowl under mitigation permits.

As the year progressed farmers were calling out for help and hunters were seeking any avenue possible to gain access and help farmers protect their crops.

The season arrived, rice bays started filling with water, the planes started working dropping seed into the bays all while hunters had to sit back in hope the Covid restrictions would ease.

October came and I received a phone call from my farmer. He insisted I come up to the farm as he had found a way I could help him protect his rice crop. He informed me I would be employed as an essential agricultural worker and I would stay at the farm adhering Covid rules and regulations. With a worker’s application and boarder 60

The preparation had started, the bags where packed and the hunting gear was being loaded into the Ute any which way possible. With no specific order the gear was being thrown and shoved in anywhere.

This was an overload of excitement as I could feel my heart rate rising as the decoys were bashing together in the mesh bag as I threw them in the back.

With the Ute jam packed and the paper work approved I was over the bridge and across the border in no time, straight into NSW rice country. As I pulled into the farmers property and opened the door the fresh air hit me. It was in that moment I took a deep breath and reflected on the journey it had been to get here.

For myself it was about this moment, I opened the front gate and drove through looking across 250 acres of rice fields. Bays filled with a rich in green colour ,bursting with fresh shoots just heightened the intensity bringing the possibility of a fresh free range harvest.

With a quick scout around the property, I sighted mobs of Grey teal, Pacific black ducks, wood ducks and the odd hard head whizzing low and swiftly across the bays.

This is what we as waterfowl hunters call game on. I popped up from behind the bank raised the U/O and fired a shot dropping the first bird.

As I selected a bay which most of the birds were working and flying in, it became quite clear where I would spend the afternoon hunting.

I headed up to the shearing shed rolled out the swag and threw the camp gear out in a hurry. I Found myself in a personal race trying to get to the rice bay as fast I could. It was Just like when I was a kid running to the milk bar and straight into the lolly section.

With a quick adjustment, the head down on the stock I swung onto the next bird as it was flaring and rising up and away. I fired again folding the second bird and watching it crash down into the water.

It now became apparent it was a challenge between a Hunter and the waterfowl buzzing in and out of the rice fields decimating the farmers crops.

The next few days progressed and numerous species were taken.

The decoy spread and duck callers were proven to be the most effective. Some ducks were smacked down in midflight trying to sneak up the channels leading to the bays. Others were flushed and driven out of the channels to ensure added protection.

I threw all the hunting gear in the decoy sled and headed for the rice bay.

With the sun and wind at my back the Decoys were getting thrown out like rag dolls. Some were still in mid air while I reached into the bag for more. All I could here was the splash as they were landing any which way in the water.

I jammed the spinning wing decoy in the middle of the spread and flicked the switch. The wings started spinning as I could only hope it was going to draw attention to some early birds.

As the last day come to a close and the temperature was rising in the afternoon, I decided to hit a rice bay and enjoy the shade of the tree. I had seen a few ducks circle the tree the previous day and take rest beside it on the bank under the fallen branches. This was going to be the final hunt for the trip so I was more relaxed and willing to take an easy seat.

With the decoys out the spinner spinning I geared up with camo clothing gulped some water down for hydration and hid behind the rice bay bank.

It didn’t take long and before I knew it my head was on a swivel. The duck callers were being brought up to my mouth and I haled and talked to a few black ducks a few bays over.

As I let out a few greeting calls the birds turned in a wide arc and looked my way. I chatted and chuckled on the caller until my lungs were lacking and gasping for air. I saw the front two birds drop down and cup their wings and head straight towards me like two F18 fighter jets headed straight for the air craft carrier.

As I threw out the decoys and stuck the chair down into the muddy crop nothing would prepare me for what was to come. With ears open and on high alert I found my head swinging every which way.

The noise of the whistle was all around me. Were they to the left or right or was the noise coming straight over the tree?

The noise became louder and louder and soon enough hooking around into the decoy spread were a mob of Whistler Ducks. As they Whistled all sorts of tunes, they were Floating and hovering trying to find a gap in the spread for those skinny bright orange legs to land.

I mounted the gun to my cheek and as fast as I could took aim and let go two shots.

Yes success! Two birds down.

As I Quickly broke open the gun and slipped another two shells in the birds were on the move. Scrambling and taking flight trying to maneuver their way out of the commitment they made for afternoon feed.

I closed the gun and locked the next two shells in. I swung the U/O around and sighted a magnificent whistler duck. The bird stood out so much as the sun hit the plumage and reflected back at me I remember thinking stay calm, keep your head on the gun take your time.

I mounted the gun, held the line and as soon as that bead hit the beak, I pulled the trigger. “Wack” the prize was hit, smacked down instantly with no movement it came crashing down into the rice shoots.

I walked over with a cheeky grin knowing that I had just taken a prizewinning bird. A bird that could possibly be mounted and displayed at home for everyone to see. As I lifted the bird the breast feathers were perfect, a deep chestnut colour with long white plumage flanked feathers. The bird was absolutely phenomenal.

As waterfowl hunters we never know what to expect. We spend countless hours scouting and buying hunting gear in hope we can bring back a free range harvest for the table.

It’s the unknowing of what the hunt will bring. To everyone else we seem crazy as we brave the elements.

It’s an obsession, a part of our brain that switches on and creates a passion that takes over.

We sit and wait in scorching temperatures we hide behind trees or shrubs for protection in pouring rain just for a few moments to be etched into our memory’s.

Take the opportunities, seize the moments this is our time, this is why we hunt.

BEN SALLERAS My hunting story began as a young boy following my old man around Cape York in the pursuit of feral pigs with our traditional bows. Dad was at the peak of his hunting pursuits around the time I was born in 1984, and had been bowhunting for a decade beforehand. It was nothing but a natural progression for me to follow in his footsteps, and hunting soon became a huge part of my life.

Growing up in Mission Beach, Far North Queensland, wild pigs were all around and I was able to hunt them on our own farm, often before school. Cape York wasn’t too far away, and was by far our primary hunting area, so the focus was definitely on trophy boars throughout my formative years.

Life changed forever on a particular day in 1998. I will never forget the words coming out of Dad’s mouth, returning home after a seminar in Townsville where he met plenty of other landowners, “Ben, guess what? I met a bloke from Charters Towers, he’s got deer on his property!”.

When deer hunting first entered my life a few months later, things changed forever. It was a real icebreaker moment into another world.

Deer hunting was nothing like what it has become in Australia since then, especially on the bowhunting side. I soon found myself drifting towards a compound bow, and after plenty of effort I took my first deer in 1999. My romance with Chital Deer had begun, and the journey they led me on in terms of progressing my hunting, my gear, my approach, and teaching me plenty of tough lessons along the way, was a huge part of my progression as a hunter.

From a very early age, I dreamed of hunting exotic locations overseas for far-fetched species. At the same time, I also couldn’t wait to hunt the other species of Australia, as to date I’d only had access to pigs and chital deer. Ideas burned away in the background throughout my high school and university years, the desire never went away, and those dreams were a real source of inspiration as I got through my studies. Throughout those years I still hunted pigs and chital with Dad, but never really ventured further south into other states or overseas. Eventually I found myself with a career job, and my first proper vehicle, and the floodgates started to open up again.

Around that time the internet and social media had really started to connect us nationally at a different level than ever before, and I started to explore plenty of other parts of Australia, hunting species and places I’d only been able to read about for many years.

Since that time I’ve hunted most of Australia’s states, and have hunted in 12 countries across 6 continents. I really enjoy the experiences hunting wild and remote places in other countries brings, certain species and locations inspire me more than others, and once I get a goal in my head, it’s hard to let go of until I’ve reached my goal. The whole process of researching, to planning and preparing, to arriving at the destination and the experience unraveling from there is very addictive, and every time it’s a unique adventure.

At the same time I love any excuse to get out into our Australian bush with family and mates hunting our local species, and spend plenty of time each year chasing a selection of deer, pigs and bovines. My partner and I really enjoy the meat harvesting side of things and like keeping the freezers full, which is something that I treasure being able to share with my fiancé.

Just last night we cooked the last piece of chital venison from a very nice stag I took earlier in 2020. That stag was particularly special, as he was my first proper trophy stag. After more than 20 years of hunting them, he was my first to break the 180 Douglas Score mark, something that had been a goal since I was young. I hadn’t seen many deer that day, and decided to do a huge loop out wide into some less-hunted country, to see if I could chance upon a lone stag. After covering about 12km without seeing a single deer, I started to loop back towards the main deer habitat area before dark. With about half an hour of daylight left, I glassed a group of deer about 400m ahead. Examining them closely, a nice solid stag come waltzing in from the back of the group. I wasted no time in backing out into a creek with good cover, advancing much closer, and selecting a good stalk path which would allow just enough cover to get into shooting range.

After some close calls with some of the hinds, and the camouflage working its magic, I found myself at full draw on the big stag as he stepped clear of some bushes between us, quartering slightly away, head down and feeding, at a distance of 45 metres. I let my arrow fly, and watched him run at full pace for about 50m before toppling over. I collapsed to the ground at that point, a lot of blood, sweat and tears over 20 years had gone into that moment I’d just witnessed. An amazing feeling, that one can only earn through their own journey to that point. Those are the moments I live for!

SVORD KIWI CATTLE KNIFE I’ve been using and reviewing Svord knives for almost 20 years now and remember speaking regularly with Master Cutler Bryan Baker of New Zealand who started making knives back in the mid 80’s. In those days he was actually working on his own and forging knives on an individual basis, but has since grown his reputation and business outside of New Zealand also and hence runs a much bigger show a large range of shapes, sizes and styles to suit farmers, hunters, fishermen, outdoorsmen and even a range of Kitchen and Pro Chef knives. Bryan once sent me a fixed blade referred to as the Bird & Trout model with leather sheath and carbon steel-heat treated blade.

I still carry this knife in my pack to this day as it holds a good edge and only takes a couple of touch-up strokes on the diamond steel to make it razor sharp again.

A breath of fresh air

G A MO SWA RM FOX 10X

Thankfully current air guns are far more sturdy and reliable to the point where some high-end outfits approach the performance of the .22LR rimfire round at 50m. These guns can command prices around $2000 and upwards and are quality pieces of kit. However, most hunters and shooters looking for an air gun at an affordable price- point are spoiled for choice and precision air guns by GAMO Outdoors of Barcelona offer an excellent range. Their latest being, the 10X Multishot Series. Outdoor Sporting Agencies sent Australian Shooter the Swarm Fox 10X model in 4.5 calibre (.177) for evaluation.

AT THE RANGE Prior to a range visit, the Swarm Fox 10X user manual was read to familiarise with the operation of the air gun, especially the 10-round magazine system. Two 10-round magazines were supplied and knowing how to remove and load the magazines on to the barrel mounted magazine clip is imperative before use.

Outdoor Sporting Agencies also supplied a few tins of quality 4.5mm (.177) calibre air gun pellets and these would be used for setting up the gun’s zero and accuracy testing at 25m, firing five 5-shot groups from each brand of pellet. Accuracy testing aside, what was pleasing was the operation of the 10-shot cylindrical magazine in feeding a fresh pellet into the barrel breech with each operation.

FIELD TESTING While the GAMO Swarm Fox 10X is a great plinking air gun, I was looking forward to visiting my brother’s olive farm to clean up a few pests which tend to accumulate during summer months around the outbuildings. With the gun dialed in for a 25m zero, dispatching all manner of starlings, feral pigeons and a few rats was done with ease using the Swarm Fox 10X. Having the 10- shot magazine capacity was most useful and an extra magazine on hand meant reloading was only required after 20 shots.

The magazines were easy to load and having two with each gun certainly is appreciated. The gun was simple to cock between shots being a breakaction design, assisted greatly by the stubby barrel profile and 380mm length. The nylon thumbhole stock was superb in its design and comfortable to hold, with the cheekpiece fulfilling its purpose well.

IN SUMMARY The 10X Multishot Series offered by GAMO and Outdoor Sporting Agencies is an excellent package which the user simply needs to sight-in and shoot, the quality GAMO pre-mounted optic and 10-shot magazines exceptional in application and use.

Results of the accuracy test at 25m are listed in Table 1 with star performer being the RWS Meisterkugeln - not all air gun pellets are created equal.

The Swarm Fox 10X in 4.5mm (.177) calibre as reviewed is perfect for plinking and tackling small pest species and rabbits out to 30m with the utmost confidence. Priced at just under the $500 mark, it offers distinction in design and performance.

TESTFIRE RIDGELINE

EVOLUTION ANORAK Ridgeline have upped their game and it’s clear to see, they mean business. With the introduction of a new lineup of quality gear at competitive prices, Ridgeline have built upon their comprehensive, existing range of apparel.

I have had a lot to do Ridgeline over the years and follow with interest their place in the hunting gear market. Ridgeline have been long-time supporters of NZGUNS, and we work closely with their team to actively promote and review their products.

One of the latest garments off the Ridgeline rack is the new Evolution Anorak. A tough, outer-shell anorak specifically designed for the active hunter.

After some correspondence with Sarah Price (Ridgeline Designer), it was arranged that I try out this new anorak (plus some shorts and tees) over the roar period and early winter. However, and at risk of repeating myself here, COVID-19 had other ideas and my pre-conceived hunting plans went out the window!

After all that and fast-forwarding several months, I did manage to get out for quite a few local hunts plus a couple of trips chasing sika. This gave me ample opportunities to give the anorak a thrash in the hills.

Credit to the design team on the hood. It sits nicely when in place over your head and the small piece of flexible rod in the peak helps maintain the hood shape.

There are draw cords other side and the whole hood can be removed via a rear zipper for stowage. Additionally, the hood has a draw cord on the back of it that I suspect is designed to pull the hood back to improve your peripheral vision.

The sleeves have recessed neoprene cuffs which I generally loath, the use of neoprene that is. In my experience they trap water and once wet stay wet, and cold! Fortunately, these cuffs have been recessed quite a bit back from the end of the sleeve which I hoped would prevent them from getting too wet, too quickly.

Both the inner cuffs and sleeve cuffs have Velcro fasteners you can tighten to reduce moisture intake and windchill. The sleeves also have zippered and Velcro arm pit vents. These work to increase air flow and allow the dumping of both heat and moisture when required.

The jacket and YKK zips are all fully seam sealed. The hand pocket zips, and upper chest zip, utilise a rubber outer that is split along the length of the zip.

OVERVIEW The Evolution Anorak is an outer-shell garment designed to provide maximum protection from the elements. It is constructed from Polyester with 3 layers making up the membrane. It is coated with a DWR (durable water repellent) which is a standard coating used on many outer-shell garments.

It works as a seal from moisture, but water isn’t that easily beaten and if there is any kind of gap or hole, it’ll get in. Adding a storm flap, which the main front pocket has, would go a long way in keeping those areas dryer.

Local hunts: As soon as we came out of Level 3 lockdown and were once again able to hit the hills, I was straight back into it. I’ve been doing quite a bit of afternoon and night-time pest control which meant I was able to wear the jacket during those missions.

The first thing I did upon receiving the anorak was to put it on to see how it fitted over my inner layers. I generally wear a t-shirt and my Huntech Silent Stalker fleece jacket. This is my standard setup and gives me a good layering system for typical winter conditions. I will put on a thermal top if the temperatures drop though!

From a shooter’s perspective, one of the things about pest control is that it provides a lot of shooting opportunities. For this review, it meant I was able wear the jacket while firing my rifles from a variety of different positions.

The upshot of this was that I found that the anorak has a good range of movement around the chest, shoulders, and upper sleeves area. This was especially noticeable when bringing the rifle up to the shoulder. In simple terms, the anorak is roomy in relation to the sizing. That’s good design.

The anorak was (size M) still roomy with all those layers on and didn’t feel tight around the shoulders. Noticeable is the longer length of the jacket with the tail reaching well past your backside. I like this extra length as it allows me to sit down on wet surfaces (the forest floor for example) and keep my butt dry.

A waist height draw cord allows you to nip up the anorak, keeping the torso area warm and dry. Located on the lower half of the left-hand side is a zipper that you can draw up to provide additional movement, potentially used to stop the garment gripping to your thighs when climbing hills.

A large zippered front pocket high up on the chest section spans the full width of the anorak. You can fit a heap of items in there. There are also two zippered hand pockets for keeping small items in and/or your hands on a cold day.

This is where the extra length of the anorak, particularly in the tail, really came into its own. I was able to comfortably tuck the tail under my rear end when sitting down thus resulting in a dry backside!

The large front chest pocket had ample room for my phone, a box of 22 ammo, knife, and rangefinder and with it being more wide than deep, means it doesn’t ride too low over your stomach.

While the local hunts enabled me to wear the anorak on a regular basis, it wouldn’t be much of a test without some time in the mountains. Thankfully, I was able to get out for a couple of mid-winter sika hunting trips in both the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges.

A typical sika hunt often includes both open country glassing and beech forest stalking - this way I get the best of both hunting styles and hopefully increase my chances for an encounter.

Kaimanawas: My first trip was a 4-day walk in from the Southern Corridor Access in the Southern Kaimanawas.

While I didn’t encounter any rain (or sika for that matter…), a southerly that was blowing through brought about some extremely cold winds.

Obviously, the wind/waterproof material stopped any wind chill from getting through but more importantly, it showcased how well the dual fastener cuff system worked keeping the draft and cold out. The high collar and hood design also worked well in this instance.

I spent the morning and evenings glassing from the shadow side of a large clearing and stalking the bush during the day. I found the polyester used on the anorak to be fairly quiet when pushing through scrub. The roomy upper torso area providing a good range of movement when using your arms.

Kawekas: My next major hunting trip was a 4-day fly in mission to Manson Hut in the Kaweka Ranges with a couple of mates. For the most part, we experienced decent weather with intermittent periods of light rain.

Wind was prevalent throughout the trip, the only variable being how strong it blew! We spent time hunting the open tops and bush and secured a sika yearling on day two of the trip.

Throughout both trips the anorak performed great, its wind proofing abilities and design keeping the drafts at bay. Again, the hood design also working well here - the ability to increase my range of vision by pulling in the hood’s rear draw cord is an excellent feature.

Combining all this hill time has allowed me to gain a general overview of the anorak’s performance. However, as I state in almost all my gear reviews, the true test is in the durability. I’ll look to provide an update on the Evolution at a later time.

CONCLUSION The Evolution Anorak is both well designed and well-constructed. It is obvious that Ridgeline have put some real thought into what feature combinations work best on an outer-shell garment.

I was really impressed with the fit of the garment around the chest and arms. The ability to wear a thick layer/s underneath and not feel restricted in my movement is great, particularly when shouldering a rifle or climbing up a steep bank etc.

I’d like to see storm flaps added to the hand pockets and on the front side of the chest and collar zip in a future iteration to minimise any moisture getting through.

The major function of an outer shell jacket/anorak is how well it keeps you dry. As it stands, I have yet to fully test the Evolution over an extended period of heavy rain (apart from a few light downpours), though I do suspect it’ll perform adequately. The DWR waterproofing is a widely used water repellent and a proven performer.

Overall, a great jacket and my current go-to outer shell garment.

When choosing a boot for hunting or hiking, choose wisely as the wrong boot for the job can spell disaster, not only for your feet, but a poor boot can also bring on back and leg pain and other muscular ailments. For example, most professional hikers and bush walkers will tell you that an extra pound in weight to your feet via boots is equal to five extra pounds in your backpack. So, weight is an important consideration correct fit, sole and construction are necessary to do the job. With that said, you don’t always have to purchase the most expensive boots on the market to achieve a good quality product either. And I’ve proven that to myself since wearing Ridgeline boots both here in Australia and across the ditch in New Zealand’s high country.

So, Ridgeline’s footwear range includes several different boots designed for different terrain. These include the Camlite high-cut boot constructed of durable denier canvas/ nylon outer in Buffalo camo finish and their Arapahoe high top or standard cut, constructed of a combination of Denier canvas and full grain Nubuck leather. Both these models are ideal for our Aussie outback and extremely breathable, yet waterproof, but also featuring a limited amount of flex in the sole for flat or hilly terrain. For the mountain hunter, however, you require a sturdy outer shell with a little more support, particularly around the ankle when negotiating rough, rocky terrain, while having a little less flex in the sole than a walking boot. Ridgeline has this covered as well in their Apache 3⁄4 and Warrior high-cut boot. Both offer a full grain waterproof treated Nubuck leather outer, Thinsulate lining and like all Ridgeline boots, a Vibram sole. In fact, most of the well-known expensive hunting/ hiking boots you’ll see feature a Vibram sole. Vibram soles are considered the ultimate in rubber sole

construction and first used on mountaineering boots to replace leather soles with steel cleats back in the 1930’s. Since then Vibram now manufacture literally hundreds of different styles and pattern for a host of applications including walking, hiking, mountaineering and the list goes on. And each with a specific tread, pattern and flex to suit that application. While Ridgeline’s hiking style boots has served the high-country hunter well, Ridgeline decided to make several changes and additions to the boot to better what in my opinion was already a well-priced, well-made boot and hence the introduction in 2020 of the new Aoraki highcut boot.

The new Aoraki high-cut boot was introduced to compliment Ridgeline’s new Performance range of clothing, this new addition to their footwear range is similar to their previous Warrior High Cut, but with several improvements and modifications. These include a new style Vibram sole and a few modifications to appearance.

Firstly, the new Aoraki is a high-top, high-cut boot for extra protection around the ankle and also offers less chance of water entering when you’re wearing gaiters. Of full grain waterproof treated Nubuck leather, they feature a Thinsulate lining adding warmth, comfort, breathability and water resistance to the boots. Their lacing system has also been modified, with new, durable, fast lacing eyelets and a series of hooks at the top. Another big plus is the fact the soles are fused to the boot and the rubber rand is no longer stitched, to further ensure water can’t penetrate. For improved traction,

Ridgeline have also replaced the pattern on their Vibram sole to the XS Trek that have been engineered for stability, comfort and optimal balance, traction and stability. I’d also like to mention that when you purchase a pair of the new Aoraki boots you also receive a cotton/ polyester style bag with draw chord to store your boots in and a spare pair of laces, something most other manufacturers don’t offer.

Featuring the new Performance logo and offering a 12-month warranty they represent excellent value for money. I’ve worn my previous Warrior boots for a couple of seasons now including a trip to New Zealand and my son has worn his Camo-Camlite boot by Ridgeline for just as long without fault, so I’d have no hesitation in recommending any of the Ridgeline range of footwear. What’s more they are priced very reasonably and offer most of the features you’d get out of a similar more expensive pair of boots.

RIFLE CLEANING & CONDITIONING Step 1:

Make sure the rifle is unloaded.

Step 2: Saturate a mop or patch with Tetra® Gun Copper Solvent and run it through the bore. Let the solvent work on the fouling for 15-30 minutes. This formula will not etch the barrel.

Remember to clean and lubricate the chamber and action.

Step 3: Run a cleaning rod with a bronze brush attachment through the bore several times to loosen any stubborn fouling. Add more Copper Solvent directly to the bronze brush as needed.

Step 4: Clean the brush with Tetra Gun Action Blaster™ to neutralize the Copper Solvent. Your brush will last longer and will be clean for the next use. ®

Also spray the firing pin assembly, action and bolt body to remove old lubricant and primer residue. Do not lubricate.

Step 5: Spray Tetra® Gun Action Blaster™ in the breech with the muzzle pointed down over a cloth to flush the chamber and bore. Avoid overspray. Immediately wipe off of non-metal surfaces.

Purple or Blue/Green residue indicates copper fouling, while gray/black residue indicates carbon and/or lead fouling.

Step 6: Dry patch or mop the barrel 2-3 passes to remove any leftover residue.

Wet your patch or mop with Tetra ® Gun Action Blaster™ for a quick clean up job, then follow with a dry one to remove any remaining residue from the bore.

Step 7: Run a wet mop or patch saturated with Tetra® Gun Lubricant through the bore 10-20 times. A bore treated with Tetra Gun Lubricant will stay clean longer and be much easier to clean.

Step 8: Run a dry mop or patch through the bore 10-20 times. The dry passes work Tetra® particles into pores and buff off excess for a dry and super-smooth finish.
