A survey by Which? Legal has shown that over 60% of people do not have a Will either because they think they do not have any assets of significant value to leave, they have not given it any thought or they are too busy to put one in place.

If an individual dies without a Will, they are said to have died intestate and their estate will be distributed in accordance with the intestacy rules.

There are risks associated with dying intestate, which can make the process more time consuming and costly for your loved ones. While a spouse/civil partner and/or children will inherit under the rules, no consideration will be given to any verbal wishes the deceased has expressed to their family during their lifetime. The rules also do not recognise unmarried couples or stepchildren/foster children who will be left with nothing even if the deceased wanted them to inherit. Where the deceased leaves behind no spouse/civil partner or children, their estate will be inherited by relatives with whom they may have had little to no relationship. The deceased will also not have had prior tax planning and if the estate is substantial, this means there could be a large inheritance tax liability.

There is also an increased possibility of a successful claim being brought against the estate pursuant to the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975. For instance, a claim could be brought by a frustrated financial dependent who believes they have not been reasonably provided for or a cohabiting partner who has not received anything at all.

Dear residents, Let me start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

I hope that you and your families enjoyed Christmas, and although it may not have felt quite the same, the collective sacrifice we have all made will go a long way in protecting everyone in our community.

As I write this, we have vaccines being rolled out across the country to the most vulnerable and to healthcare workers, which gives us real reason to be hopeful for a brighter 2021 with some sense of normality returning. I am continuing to work with the Council, Public Health England and Government to make sure we get the best deal for our local area, this means faster, greater testing and rolling out the vaccine.

I am very aware of the impact that the Coronavirus has had on our local businesses, especially hospitality.

That is why I launched my constituency-wide Business Forum – so that businesses can address their concerns and issues directly to me. I know just how crucial our small businesses are in Monkspath and Dickens Heath and they sit right at the heart of our communities.

At the forum launch event, I had the pleasure of speaking to a number of local business owners, hearing about their experiences through the pandemic. I also got the opportunity to feedback on my time in Westminster including my work on business rates reform with the Treasury.

1. Boost Your Immune System Take a good quality multi vitamin with A, B, C, D, E and Zinc. These vitamins and minerals will help boost the immune system as powerful antioxidants fight against infections and reduce free radical cell damage. Zinc also supports the health of the gut and reduces inflammation in the body. All of these nutrients can be found in foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and lean protein (chicken and fish).

2. Stay Hydrated Drink up to 2 litres of water per day to help flush toxins from the body, relieving extra pressure on your immune system. Include herbal teas, soups, and warming winter broths.

3. Get Moving Regular physical activity has long been shown to be good for just about everything including increasing the body’s antibody and white cell activity. This will boost your defence against infections, reducing the likelihood of colds and viruses and increasing oxygen levels in the blood.

Try simply getting outside in the fresh air for a 20-minute walk.

4. Stay connected During these unprecedented, stressful times it is more important than ever that we feel the support and kindness of others. Don’t hesitate to reach out and connect.

Mindfulness is also a great way to look after your mental health, try a simple 5 minutes per day through one of the many apps available.

5. A good night’s sleep Research is showing more than ever just how important sleep is to our overall health and wellbeing.

Aim for 7-9 hours per night and follow these simple tips Try and switch off from phones, laptops, iPads and other forms of ‘blue light’ at least an hour before bed. This type of light suppresses our natural sleep hormone (melatonin) and disrupts our sleep.

Ensure the bedroom is pitch dark and ensure all EMF (TVs, phones, iPads etc) are left out of the room.

Try taking a magnesium supplement before bedtime.

This aids relaxation and recovery for good sleep.

DOCTOR’S NOTE The Partnership (SHP) which covers Haslucks Green, Jacey, Shirley Medical Centre, Dickens Heath, Monkspath, Blossomfield Rd and Grove Surgery are in Coronavirus contingency phase.

All surgeries are open, but access is by invitation after telephone triage.

Telephone calls are being re-directed to our call centre and patients will, wherever possible, have their problems dealt with on the phone. If offered an appointment it is very likely not to be at their usual practice. This is being implemented to reduce footfall so that vulnerable patients, staff and their families are put at minimal risk.

This will of course change accordingly.

Dickens Heath

Library

Dickens Heath Library will be re-opening on Thursdays between 10am-1pm Starting 22nd October for a ‘Grab & Go’ service. Customers will be limited to 30 minutes in the library, with a maximum of 7 people (including staff) at any one time.

All visitors are asked to wear a face mask or covering in line with current guidance.

PC use will be available for a maximum of 45 mins, booking a PC by calling the library advisable. No printing, scanning, copying or use of memory sticks currently available.

Rhymetime, Story Times & craft activities are continuing online.

Click & collect service is up & running at Shirley & The Core libraries.

Customers are also able to return books to these libraries on Friday afternoons between 2-4pm. Online resources also available with library membership (including ebooks, audiobooks).
