 Participation in the Lok Sabha Election 2009 Youth for Equality decided to make direct political intervention in the 2009 Lok sabha polls. Youth For Equality launched a political wing. We decided to select a People’s candidate. We invited the resumes for Lok Sabha candidates for New Delhi constituency till 30th march 2009.

We recieved-223 resume of which – 1) 117 resumes from the students less than 25 years 2) more than 40 years - 37 resumes 3) without voter’s card-7 resumes 4) from out side Delhi-9 resumes So finally, we selected 53 candidates for first phase of screening and we divided them into 5 groups and selected one from each group. In second phase screening we selected 3 candidates.

They will be offered to open forum on Tuesday in which local residents and panel of experts will be invited to screen them openly, in front of media. All the media person’s are invited to witness this open debate. We will also perform online opinion for the above mentioned candidates and finally we will select the Lok Umeedwar that will be people’s candidate and he/she will be the Y4E's candidate.

NEW DELHI: The anti-reservation brigade is all set to go political with Youth for Equality (YFE) deciding to field its candidate from the New Delhi constituency for the coming general elections.

Through the launch of the political outfit, YFE has decided to make a direct political intervention in the coming Lok Sabha polls to continue their fight against reservations and criminalization of politics. YFE has already registered itself with the Election Commission as a non-recognized political party.

What is unconventional for Indian politics is that YFE would not field its own candidate, but would support the "people's candidate'' to be selected through a process of participation of the civil society. "YFE would not follow what political parties otherwise do while selecting candidates. We will support and campaign for a candidate chosen through an open process by various organizations, NGOs, RWAs and the civil society,'' said Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra, president, YFE. According to YFE officials, the organization has already received over 160 resumes for candidature. YFE's expert panel comprising eminent persons having no political affiliation would shortlist 10 of the aspirants. The list would then be sent to RWAs, trader associations, NGOs and other organizations in the area for grading. The person who receives the best rating would be YFE's candidate. Mishra said the people's commission, which would shortlist 10 candidates, would comprise faculty members from AIIMS, Lady Hardinge Medical College, DU, JNU, Jamia and other educational institutes and eminent people from other walks of life.

YFE would position its political activity around anti-reservation ideology, 49'O, criminalization of politics, corruption, and accountability in government sponsored schemes.

On New Delhi constituency being its first political step, Brundaban Mishra of YFE said: "This is one of the prestigious constituencies and we want to send just the right signal all across the country.''

Advocate R C Lahoti, who has been representing YFE in its fight against caste-based reservation and on implementation of Lyngdoh Committee's recommendations in JNU, also joined in the launch of the political wing to express solidarity. Lahoti said, "A big battle has started in a humble way. I don't expect YFE to win any seats, which isn't their objective either, but it will definitely wake people up from their ignorance. Unlike other parties YFE does not have a votebank. But the votes they generate would be clean votes.''

Arvind Kejriwal: The Emerging Fourth Front?

He has announced a new political party, which promises to change the way politics happens in India. But are Indians ready for a systemic change and is Kejriwal the right man for the job?

Arvind Kejriwal’s three-storied office in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, has a queer resemblance to the numerous engineering entrance exam coaching centres one finds in tier 2 cities of India. The rooms are bustling with activity. Groups of two or three young volunteers huddle together, discussing fervently. Each door has a computer printout stuck on it: ‘Toilet’, ‘Please take off your shoes before entering’ and so on. And there’s the doormat, which says ‘Let’s stamp out corruption’.

Kejriwal’s closest aide, Manish Sisodia, sits in one of the rooms, talking to a middle-aged man with a walking stick. At the next table, an old man is explaining his electricity woes to one of the young volunteers of India Against Corruption, Kejriwal’s NGO. It is three in the afternoon and Sisodia missed his lunch. He is hurriedly eating water chestnuts out of a polythene bag and ignores the calls he gets on his BlackBerry and iPhone. The man talking to him has come from Dibrugarh in Assam and Sisodia is assessing how many people are willing to work for the new party that Kejriwal announced on October 2.

The man tells him that he can get 10-12 people to work on weekends. “Just by working on weekends we cannot build this nation, sir!” says Sisodia. “Tell me how many people are willing to work every day making this [campaigning] their top priority?”

The man from Assam cannot think of anyone except himself and a retired professor. “But will he

[the professor] be able to walk across villages to build cadres?” asks Sisodia.

That, in a nutshell, is the biggest hurdle IAC faces as it transitions from an NGO to a political party.

As a social movement, it could sustain fasts and protests based in Delhi while the media, especially the 24-hour news channels, took its message to millions across the country. But the media is unlikely to extend that courtesy while IAC tries to build its cadres as a political party. For that, IAC requires hordes of committed people who have such belief in Kejriwal’s vision for India that they forego weeks and months of regular vocation.

And there’s the rub. Kejriwal’s vision for India, elaborately detailed in his book Swaraj,is a disastrous mix of idealism, naïveté and blindness bordering on the idiotic. It has received scant attention; the media has mostly followed Kejriwal’s valiant attempts to expose the rotten underbelly of India’s political establishment.

Kejriwal wants to change the way Indians govern themselves. He hopes to bring “truly participative” democracy where assemblies of voters called gram sabhas (rural) and mohalla sabhas (urban) will decide what is best for them instead of some Central planner sitting in Delhi.

Sounds good until you get down to brass-tacks. For land acquisition, Kejriwal’s solution is to grant the final word to the gram sabha, which in his opinion “is best positioned to negotiate” with the big corporate houses. This will cut down corruption by bureaucrats and ministers. It doesn’t matter to him that most rural folks may not be sophisticated enough to know the “best deal”. Or that the company may bribe the influential leaders of the gram sabha, instead of the bureaucrats, to get a favourable verdict. “Let it be. If leaders fail them, then people will not trust them next time!” he says. But will there be a next time for poor farmers who have lost their land in a suboptimal deal?

“We have met the enemy and he is us” In 2009, a group of young professionals and students from India’s top institutions, decided they would fight for one seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Calling themselves Youth for Equality (YFE), they believed Indians needed and desired a different set of politicians—leaders who would not play politics based on caste, creed, etc.

They chose the New Delhi constituency. Instead of nominating candidates, they decided to let the people choose their own candidate. This involved an SMS campaign to invite a long list of credible names, followed by internal investigations and several rounds of interviews with the candidates.

Finally, they held a public gathering at Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk where three former high court judges scrutinised the final three candidates in front of a crowd of 1,600. Judges gave points while the candidates debated with each other and answered queries from the public.

To fund the election, YFE members went around the constituency, collecting donations to fight the election. They collected Rs 1.2 crore and spent Rs 70,000 campaigning for the election.

Result: Their candidate, a woman with an Indian Army background, came fourth in the race.

They only vote on the basis of caste or the obscene amount of money that flows through from the bigger political parties,” says a demoralised

This is more than just a cautionary tale for ‘Team Arvind’ for two reasons. One, Kejriwal’s method of fighting elections is eerily similar to the YFE’s. Two, it also points to the true nature of the Indian voter.

Congress’ inept and scam-ridden rule has meant that a change of guard is imminent in Delhi.

More importantly, it is now abundantly clear that India needs a better set of politicians. The fear is do Indians want it?

“Ours is a very fractious society. Caste, region, religion… you know the irrational factors that ordinarily should not play part in nation building,” laments Jayaprakash Narayan who founded Lok Satta party in 2006 but holds just one seat in the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly.

“When you and I talk about India, we talk about an India which transcends all these. But the real India does not transcend all these. For any sensitive soul, it is a very painful thing to accept. You do not like to confront these things. But the moment you become a political force you have to confront these.”

Youth For Equality’s Participation In Jharkhand Local Body Election 2010 Under my leadership, the Youth For Equality achieved spectacular electoral success in the local body election of Jharkhand in 2010. The electoral success was a stunning outcome of years of work in the rural rustic of Jharkhand.  YFE fielded 12 candidates for various posts in the Rargaon Panchayat in the Ranchi District of Jharkhand.  Out of the 12 candidates 11 becomes victorious.  The 11 victorious, who are all tribal, includes 4 female candidates.  YFE cadre Shri Amar Singh Munda won for the post of Mukhiya of Rargaon Panchayat.  Amar Singh Munda is from the Lodhma village which is adopted by YFE for its all round development.  YFE cadres Saraswati Devi, Shankutala Devi, Shantoshi Devi, Debanand Singh Munda, Shiv Shankar Munda, Bholanath Majhi, Rajkishore Singh Munda and Balram Munda won the post of Ward Member.  YFE contested against strong political forces like All Jharkhand Student Union (AJSU), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and other political parties as well as independent candidates.

ď śParticipation in Delhi Municipals Elections 2007 10th April 2007 - YFE Contested 3 Seats in the Delhi Municipal Election Youth For Equality, during the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections 2007 tried to prove the point that "participation not refrainment" is the answer. A conscious decision was taken to contest the DMC election and three candidates were filed from three different constituencies. a) Dr. Sanjay Rajput contested from Kasturba Nagar (South Delhi), b) Pradeep Jha from Mukherjee Nagar(North Delhi) and c) Dr. Joshi from East-Rohtas Nager (Shahdara).

Under my leadership, students from JNU, DU and AIIMS along with others campaigned vigorously for all the three candidates. In all the three constituencies YFE candidates surprised the political pundits when they secured 3rd position only after the two national parties BJP and Congress. The message was clear that the common men of India striving for a political alternative.

NEW DELHI: Youth for Equality (YFE), which spearheaded the anti-reservation stir in the Capital last year, has fielded five candidates for the forthcoming elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

According to YFE's chief election coordinator Sameer Panda, the five candidates are N. K. Joshi from Shahdara, Usha Sridhar from Janakpuri, Pradeep Jha from Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Syed Mohsin from Zakir Nagar and Sanjay Rajput from Kasturba Nagar.

Pradeep Jha, 23, a civil services aspirant and a graduate from Delhi University, is the youngest candidate for YFE. Among other candidates, Dr. Joshi and Dr. Usha are practicing doctors, while Mr. Rajput is a research scientist at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. Syed Mohsin is a Ph. D. student from Jamia Millia Islamia.

Mr. Panda said the YFE will work towards bringing equality in development. "The representatives of people live in areas which have better infrastructure and that alienates from the problems being faced by the common man," said Mr. Panda.

In terms of planning for Delhi, Mr. Panda said the YFE also wants long-term planning with an eye on improving infrastructure. He added that the National Capital Region should be integrated well with the Capital and people should not face problems in transport.

The YFE had decided to enter the electoral fray about a month ago. After initial consultations round 40 candidates were short-listed. Finally, it was decided that only five would be fielded. "We will see what happens this time and then we will take it forward from there," said Mr. Panda.

He added that the candidates would take to door-to-door campaigning as YFE did not have funds at par with big parties.

Under my leadership, Sanjeet Shukla, a 23-yearold law student of Mithibai College and the sole candidate fielded by Youth For Equality (YFE) has become a hit with Sion voters for the Bruhan Mumbai Muncipal Election. About 250 students and faculty from several engineering and medical colleges across the city, including GS Medical and KJ Somaiya Engineering colleges, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru University from New Delhi, campaigned for the Sion resident for the YFE candidates. YFE in Mumbai has been getting positive response from residents of Ward 167 with each passing day. The YFE's popularity has the Congress worried. The party has decided to sideline its incumbent councilor, Babubhai Bhawanji, by fielding Upendra Doshi, general secretary of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee, to take on YFE candidate Sanjeet Shukla.

The outcome of the election was also impressive as the YFE secured 4th position and garnered good number of votes.

Mumbai: The bitter controversy that swept the country over reservations is set to become an issue in the BMC polls. Youth for Equality (YFE), the organisation that is spearheading the antireservation movement in the country, has decided to field a candidate in the BMC elections. Said YFE spokesperson Gunjan Sharma: “We will be fielding a candidate, 23-yearold Sanjeet Shukla, against the sitting Congress corporator Babubhai Bhawanji in Ward 167, which encompasses the stretch between Sion Circle and King’s Circle.

“The Congress got the OBC reservation bill passed in Parliament in December when most medical and engineering students across the country were busy with their exams. The party thought that once the bill was passed then our agitation would die a natural death. We want to prove them wrong. Contesting the BMC polls is a small step in that direction,’’ the 23-year-old Sharma explained.

Sharma, who is a medical student, said, “We posted our idea of contesting on our website www.youthforequality.in and the maximum responses came from this ward. So we decided to field a candidate. Shukla is a law student of Mitthibai College and has been active with us for six months. His father was a social worker in Sion.’’

He said that apart from taking up civic issues, the YFE wants to use the polls to spread awareness about the “damage’’ reservations, especially for OBCs, are causing to Indian democracy. He claimed that the maximum number of atrocities on Dalits, like in Khairlanji, was committed by OBCs. Said a Sion resident, R Vishwanath: “Ideally, local issues should be discussed in a civic election.

But since reservation is an important issue affecting every person, I will certainly back YFE.’’
