Board of Directors
Neil Monkman, Chair
It does not seem that eight months have past since Orpheus had the first rehearsal for the 2024-25 season, and it is not over yet, as we now are pleased to present a classic for you, The Music Man. Like many Broadway classics, this production follows a formula for success, and it also has a message beyond the shear enjoyment of the music and performance. The message that I take from this production is reminder that the greatest success comes when we do something for others more than we would for ourselves
In The Music Man, Harold Hill begins his journey thinking only about the gains he will make, regardless of the cost to others, but during his journey he learns that he can achieve success without costs to others And more importantly, that when you are considerate of others, the success of the group is greater than the success of the individuals. It’s the same message that leads the formula for success at Orpheus. Bringing together a huge group of people who volunteer their talents, time, and love of theatre to create a production that entertains you, our audience It is a win for everyone! Each person involved in the production is doing something that they truly enjoy, and with that, they hope to bring that same joy to you One where individuals work together for the betterment of the whole community
I truly hope that each of you have enjoyed all our productions this year and that you will be back next year for what will be another fabulous season of musical theatre. Now, let’s all see if there are really Seventy-Six Trombones in the show

Tyler Devine Technical Director
Director's Message
Welcome to our production of The Music Man!
Among the canon of classic musical theatre, with its lively music and unforgettable characters, The Music Man ranks as one of the all-time greats But it’s more than just a nostalgic favourite At its heart, it’s a story about transformation, belief, and the power of community Timeless themes that continue to resonate today
If I told you this was a story about a con man who convinces a group of narrow-minded townspeople that they face a dangerous problem, and then presents himself as the only one who can solve it, you might be forgiven for thinking this tale was about something, or someone, more contemporary. And yet, what emerges from that setup is a surprisingly tender story about connection, trust, and the unexpected ways people can change
Returning to Orpheus to direct this production has been a joyful experience From before our very first rehearsal, this entire team has poured their hearts into bringing this show to life I’ve been reminded, once again, of why I love musical theatre, and why I love this organization. Orpheus has always felt like a family, and in this case, it truly has been one. Flip through the programme and you’ll see what I mean: siblings, spouses, parents, children this production is a family affair in every sense of the word
We invite you to be swept up in the charm, humour, and warmth of this beloved show And as the familiar notes of “76 Trombones” ring out, may you be reminded that sometimes, the most unlikely people can bring out the best in us all.
Thank you for supporting live theatre. Enjoy the show!
Shaun Toohey Director
Show Synopsis
There’s trouble in River City! When smooth-talking con man Harold Hill arrives in a small, tight-knit town in Iowa, he expects to dupe its residents with his elaborate moneymaking scheme: Despite his complete lack of musical literacy, he will convince everyone that he is a brilliant bandleader and recruit all the boys in town to form a band, pocketing the cash for instruments and uniforms The problem? Some of the town members, especially the stern librarian, Marian Paroo, don’t quite buy Harold’s story. As Harold struggles to keep his scheme afloat, he also finds himself increasingly attached to the townspeople, who have all experienced a positive change since Harold came to town. Complicating matters even more, Harold is also falling head-over-heels for the beautiful Marian
