Welcome to the Orono Community Education SUMMER PROGRAM!

Our program uses a unique combination of talented educators from within the Orono Schools and from neighboring school districts as well as partnerships with several local and national education businesses. The goal is to provide programs that keep students and community members active in both mind and body throughout the summer. We encourage you to spend your summer developing a healthy lifestyle, academic strengths, positive social skills and character. Whether you participate in your favorite activity or learn something new - we hope you HAVE FUN!

The majority of our summer programs will take place in the Schumann Elementary/Intermediate School complex. Room numbers that are not listed with the class description will be included on the class reminder you receive via email a few days before the start date. Our staff is available to guide students to the appropriate classroom when they arrive for the day.

Class Confirmation

To receive confirmation of your class enrollment, MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! Otherwise, no news is good news! The only time you will hear from us aside from the email confirmation and class reminder is:

• If there is a change in class time, day or building location

• If the class is cancelled

• If a class requires additional information.

Health Concerns or Special Needs

Please indicate any special learning, emotional, or health needs at the time of registration so our staff can assist your child in having a successful experience in our program. Community Education does not have access to school district records for this information.

Food Allergies

Some classes may include projects or activities using food. If your child has a food allergy, please indicate this and any requested accommodations at the time of registration.

Payment Plans

A payment plan of three installments is available to all who register by credit card. First payment is due at the time of registration, second payment is due June 15, and the final payment is due July 15. Call the Community Education Office at 952-449-8350 if you would like to request other payment arrangements.

Bus Transportation is available

June 16 - August 7. Camps that have bus transportation available both to and from are indicated with a dot in the “bus” column on the online Camp Calendars. Routes are limited. See page 5 for bus registration details.

Lunch Bunch is available to students registered for both morning and afternoon camps. Bring a lunch and our staff will supervise students and help them get to their afternoon camp. See page 5 for details.

Snacks & Lunches

We recommend you send a snack and a water bottle with your student.

If your child has a full day program or is scheduled to attend both a morning and afternoon program, you will need to send a lunch. (See Lunch Bunch on page 5.)

Participant Accommodations

Orono Community Education works to help each student be successful in our programs. We will do whatever we can to provide reasonable accommodations for students within the general nature of each activity. Some programs or settings may not be an appropriate match for a student’s needs. If you have concerns about participation or would like to request support for your student, please contact us at 952-449-8350.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Bus Transportation

We have a limited-stop activity bus providing transportation to and from the Orono School’s main campus.

• Bus transportation is available Monday - Thursday, June 16 - August 7. NO programs June 19.

• Available from designated stops to the main campus for programs beginning at 9 AM.

• Available from the main campus back to designated stops for programs ending at 12 PM and 4 PM.

• Students who are registered for the Summer Playground Program (Rainbow or Holbrook Park) may ride the bus for free from the main campus.

• DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION: MAY 19.

• Exact bus routes and times will be sent the week of June 9 to those who are registered.

Lunch Bunch

Grades K - 8 | Monday - Thursday | 12 - 1 PM

If your child is registered for both a morning and an afternoon camp, they must be supervised from 12 - 1 PM between camps. Sign up for Lunch Bunch and send a bag lunch. Our staff will supervise students and then help them get to their afternoon activity. Note: This option only works between morning camps that end at 12 PM and afternoon camps that begin at 1 PM on the school’s main campus, otherwise you must make an alternate plan for supervision of your child between camps.

Get on the bus with Ms. Frizzle and discover the magical interconnections of our world using literature, science, art, physical activities, and cooking. Travel to the time of dinosaurs and decide what type of dinosaur you would be, eat dinosaur food, and learn why they became extinct. Understand space and meteorites and even create a space snack.

Marsh Life

Bring your rain boots and curiosity as we explore the lakefront and its marshy edges. Discover the dozens of species of small water creatures called macro invertebrates. We will catch some tadpoles and find the nesting areas of migratory birds such as the Baltimore Oriole. As we work near the water’s edge, the osprey and bald eagle as well as the trumpeter swan family will keep us entertained. This habitat is loaded with many species of mammals, birds, insects, and amphibians.

4CT Junior Drama Camp

Beginner & Intermediate

This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate divers. Beginner participants will learn fundamental diving skills and basic dives in this class. Divers will start with diving from the side of the pool and progress to a front dive with approach from the diving board. If students have already taken a beginner class, they will work on more advanced skills, which will help them to prepare for competitive diving.

Metro Marlins Swim Team

Open to ages 7 - 18

The Metro Marlins Swim Team is a member team of USA Swimming. The program includes conditioning, stroke technique, dry land training, team-building opportunities, Metro Marlins in-house meets, and swim meets against other USA Swim clubs. Anyone interested in competitive swimming is invited to try out. All swimmers should be familiar with each swim stroke before trying out. Our team is divided into four levels: Red, White, Blue, and Silver. All levels are encouraged to compete at meets. New swimmers will be asked to try out and be evaluated by the Metro Marlins coaching staff. Final team placement will be based on swimmer performance.

6 months - Age 2

Enjoy swimming with your child while building swimming readiness by emphasizing fun and safety in the water. Parent/ guardian must accompany child in the water. Children not potty trained should wear swim diapers or plastic diaper covers.

Preschool Level 1

Ages 3 - 5

For inexperienced or cautious swimmers. Focus will be on gaining comfort in the water, floating on front and back, blowing bubbles, and submerging. Parent/guardian must accompany child in the water.

Preschool Level 2

Ages 3 - 5

For the swimmer who is comfortable voluntarily submerging. Focus will be on creating greater independence floating and swimming. Parent/guardian may accompany child in the water.

Preschool Level 3

Ages 3 - 5 (not offered Summer 2025)

For the swimmer who is floating, submerging, and swimming independently. Work to gain independence and build endurance in all skills. Parent/guardian may accompany child in the water.

Log Rolling 101

Embark on an exciting journey to improve your balance and coordination while learning the sport of log rolling! Work through a series of engaging activities and games aimed at developing essential balance skills. From mastering the basics of footwork and posture to navigating more challenging maneuvers, such as spins and directional changes, you will gain confidence and proficiency on the rolling logs. Learn valuable techniques for staying safe while enjoying this unique water sport. Students should be able to swim 25 yards independently and tread water for 30 seconds (typically Red Cross Swimming Level 4 or higher). Rowing: Juniors Prep Camp

This camp is for athletes interested in joining the Long Lake Rowing Crew Juniors team. Participants will learn the basics of competitive rowing, improve their technique, and experience training as part of a team. After building skills and confidence, new rowers can join the team as “novice rowers.” Participants are required to be able to swim 100 meters and tread water. Dress to get wet - wear socks and tennis shoes, and bring a water bottle and towel. Daily attendance is required as each session builds on the previous one. Designed for beginners, this camp uses balls that bounce lower and move slowly, giving players more time to react. Through fun tennis games, kids will learn the basics of grip, ready position, and strokes while building confidence and skill.

Tennis: Orange Ball Ages 7 - 10

Players will build on fundamental skills while adding movement and court coverage. Using orange balls, which bounce higher and faster than red balls but slower than green, players will focus on footwork, consistency, and strategy through singles and doubles point play. Serving, scoring, and an introduction to match play will also be covered.

Coach Dvorak leads the Orono High School boys and girls teams. He is a well-trained tennis professional who has over 25 years teaching experience. Coach Dvorak is an accomplished tennis player who played Division 1 tennis at the University of Minnesota. He has experience and knowledge in coaching high school tennis and teaching the fundamentals of tennis through private lessons, clinics, and academies.

Tennis: Green Ball Ages 10 - 12

For players ready to play on a full-length court, this camp focuses on refining technique and rallying skills. Players will engage in situational point play to develop strategies for both singles and doubles. They’ll also work on serving, scoring, and competing.

Pickleball Advanced Play

If you’re looking for a higher level of pickleball competition, this class is for you! There will be minimal drills in this program with some focus on the 3rd shot drop and the advantages of stacking. The majority of the time will be used for competitive play. An instructor will be present for court rotations, filling in for match play, answering questions, and providing helpful hints upon request. This group is more competitive, but still fun! You may register for multiple months at one time. Drop ins may be available if the space allows. Payment Plans

A payment plan of three installments is available to all who register by credit card. First payment is due at the time of registration, second is due June 15, and the final payment is due July 15. Call the Community Education Office at 952-449-8350 if you would like to request other payment arrangements.

Classroom locations not listed with class descriptions will be included on the class reminder you receive via email a couple of days before the first day of class.

Scholarships are available to qualified families for summer programs. Educational Benefits guidelines and individual circumstances are used to determine eligibility. Download an application from our website: ce.oronoschools.org, and select “Registration Information” under “About Us” or call at 952-449-8354.

Refund Policy

If you need to drop a class, please notify us at 952-449-8350 as soon as you know. Up to 3 business days prior to the class, a refund minus a $10 cancellation fee will be issued. After that time, no refunds will be issued. Partial refunds will be considered if injury or serious illness occurs. Some programs have a more specific refund policy. If Community Education needs to cancel a class, we will contact you and process a full refund.

Tax Deductions for Educational Expenses

Many programs in this brochure may qualify as educational expenses for tax deductions. To print receipts for our programs, log in to your Community Education Eleyo account and then select “Your History” under your account at the bottom of screen. You can view your registrations by year and print any receipts you need. For more information contact your personal tax preparer or visit revenue.state.mn.us.
