APPLIED RESEARCH + DESIGN_PUBLISHING AR+D_P, or Applied Research + Design Publishing, is

a new editorial platform that creates a space for research-based publications within the fields of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urbanism, and Design. Based in San Francisco, with a diverse and talented editorial board consisting of the brightest practitioners, educators, and thinkers in the world, we specifically focus on emerging dialogues between diverse modes of applied research that currently dominate a range of architectural practices, and their role in defining new modalities of spatial synthesis best afforded by design. The imprint promotes the study of emergent spatial dynamics taking place across multiple scales and geographies, in order to construct a new ground for both established and emerging voices to disseminate their ideas in physical print.

The Editorial Board David Grahame Shane trained at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in the 1960’s during the Archigram years.

He completed an M.Arch in Urban Design and a Ph.D in Architectural and Urban History at Cornell with Colin Rowe. He taught at the A.A. School under Alvin Boyarsky before joining Columbia University in 1985 (and the Urban Design Program in 1991). He now also lectures at Cooper Union and City College in New York.

Over the past 20 years, he has taught Urban Design master-classes and lectured internationally, as well as being published widely.

Florencia Rodriguez is an architect and critic as well as founder and editorial director of Piedra, Papel y Tijera publishers in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her editorial work is complemented by other development and dissemination activities aimed at triggering cultural “agitation” to provoke and inspire a collective evolution of the discipline. In 2010, Rodriguez created the publication REVISTA PLOT, a platform committed

to the dissemination of practices and critical thinking about contemporary architecture. One of its main aims is to integrate Latin-American architecture within global debates and production, and to promote the active role of criticism and theory in the transformation of our built environment.

Rodrigo Perez de Arce currently serves as Professor of undergraduate and graduate studies in architecture at the P. Catholic University of Chile, and has participated as a visiting professor at the Central University of Venezuela, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Bath and Degli Studi, Rome, between others. He has taught workshops in the Master of Architecture program, and undergraduate workshops including PUC Workout Workshop conducted in partnership with Harvard (2001).

He has lectured at the Center for Latin American Studies at the Rockefeller Foundation, New York (2002). He is currently preparing a co-authored publication Chilean Architecture 1950-2000 to be published by Texas A & M Press.

Kenneth Schwartz, FAIA, is the Dean of the Tulane School of Architecture.

He has over twenty-seven years of teaching and practice experience in architecture, preservation, urban design and community planning. As a founding principal of CP+D (Community Planning + Design) and SchwartzKinnard, Architects, he has won four national design competitions exploring the constructive force that progressive urbanism and architecture can play in rebuilding cities. Mr. Schwartz served on the University of Virginia Master Planning Committee and the Art and Architecture Review Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Schwartz was awarded UVA’s Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award, the university’s highest teaching honor given to one faculty member each year.

Monica Ponce de Leon, AIA, is the Dean and Eliel Saarinen Collegiate Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning of University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. She has received honors from the Architectural League of New York (Young Architects Award,

1997, and Emerging Voices, 2003) the American Academy of Arts and Letters (Award in Architecture, 2002), the Smithsonian Institution's CooperHewitt National Design Museum (National Design Award in Architecture, 2007), and the United States Artists (Target Fellows in Architecture and Design, 2007). Her practice has received over 60 design awards.

Erwin Viray is Professor of Architecture and Design at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan. He has been an Editorial Associate of a+u (Architecture and Urbanism) in Tokyo since 1996. He is also a Design Critic of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in Cambridge, MA, USA. He has received awards from the Council of Europe Swedish Institute Scholarship (1986), Japan Foundation Fellowship (1990), and the Kyoto City Appreciation Award (2001). E rwin Viray was a member of the jury of the Zumtobel Award for Humanity and Sustainability and of the Asia Architecture Olympiad in 2009.

John Parman is an editor and writer, based in San Francisco and Berkeley. At Gensler, a global design consultancy, he serves as editorial director of the publications group and the editor of its client magazine, Dialogue, which he co-founded in 1999.

He also co-founded and published the award-winning quarterly, Design Book Review, from 1983 through 1999. He is an editorial adviser to Architect’s Newspaper, California edition, and Room One Thousand, a publication of UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. He writes for Arcade, the Seattle design journal, and is a founding editor of TraceSF. com, a blog journal focused on design, culture, and urbanism. He has written for other design publications in Europe, Japan, and the US. Since 1989, he has co-directed the Urban Construction Laboratory, a Berkeleybased think tank founded by UC Berkeley Professor Richard Bender.

In this role, he is an adviser to the Mori Memorial Foundation on its Mori Power City Index. He, Bender, and UC Berkeley Campus Architect Emily Marthinsen wrote on “Berkeley:

Campus and City,” for Univer-Cities (World Science, 2013 and 2014), and spoke at a conference on this theme in Singapore in 2013. Parman is a member of SPUR’s project review committee and president of the 2430 Arts Alliance in Berkeley. Until 1997, he was the regional marketing director at SOM. He has a BA in Architecture and History from Washington University and an M.Arch in Building Technology from UC Berkeley, where he lectured from 1984 through 1988, and also edited the CED News.

Working in Mumbai Rahul Mehrotra

RMA’s approach to working in Mumbai has been to use the city and region of their operation as a generator of practice. It’s a way for them to evolve an approach, and architectural vocabulary, that draws from a more elastic definition of the profession – one that sees multiple disciplines as being simultaneously valid in engaging with the kinetic landscape of India.

Working in Mumbai is not monographic in its format or disposition.

Rather, it weaves a series of rich narratives around the gamut of issues and questions that intersect at many moments as these different narratives unfold. Architecture, emergent urbanism, critical conservation, research and writing, reuse of urban spaces, and social engagement are some of the issues that become the focus of these narratives. The narratives are richly represented with illustrations from their practice and collaborations, as well as other relevant images from across India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rahul Mehrotra is the principal of architecture firm RMA Architects (founded in 1990 as Rahul Mehrotra Associates) of Mumbai, India, and is Professor of Urban Design and Planning and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) in Cambridge, Mass., USA. He has been one of the activists behind the declaration of urban precincts as conservation areas in Mumbai and one of the founding members of the Kala Ghoda area rejuvenation movement, the restoration of the Oval Maidan, and the formulation of several citizens' associations in the historic Fort District in Mumbai.

He was also executive director of the Urban Design Research Institute (1994-2004), where he is now a trustee. The UDRI is also actively involved in researching and influencing policy for the historic district, and the city more generally.

Beyond the dense urbanism of Mumbai (Bombay) and the technology centers of Bangalore and Hyderabad lies the basin: a fertile alluvial plain of 1.1 million square kilometers in area, which is today home to over one-quarter of India’s billion-plus population.

While most of the basin sits within India, it extends into present day Bangladesh, Nepal, and Tibet. Not only is the area one of the most densely populated river basins in the world, but every year it also undergoes radical physical changes. With the arrival of the southwest monsoon between late-June and late-August, over one meter of rainfall drenches northern India. And, what is more, despite these drastic seasonal changes and population density, the basin remains agriculturally productive.

These dynamic circumstances not only motivate spatial and morphological growth patterns, but also necessitate a unique set of socio-cultural and economic practices that is exemplified by the diffuse forms of urbanization along expansive tracts of transportation and hydrological infrastructures crisscrossing and running parallel to the Ganges River. While the image of India and the Ganges River are inseprable amongst Indians and foreigners alike, there is surprisingly a dearth of scholarship on architecture, urbanism, and infrastructure along the Ganges River Corridor. How did this situation, which is relatively unique to India at this scale, emerge? This publication asserts another understanding of the hinterland of northern India as sharing the same level of infrastructural excess and detail as that of the traditional compact city—and equally worthy of design attention and expertise. The study of territories and regions at different scales avow designers and scholars alike to examine climate, geography, natural resources, technology, social organization, etc. as part of a greater variety of tools for design. I will contend that the rationale behind why design is not involved is for two fundamental reasons, namely that representations of this territory fail to capture the unique social and environmental dynamics driving space making practices and that infrastructure, not architecture, in this context, is the primary formgiving enterprise. Expansive tracts of infrastructures like highways, rail lines, and canals present a compelling array of new geometries for designers who are interested in engaging architecture beyond the conventions of the boutique infill, the isolated building, or ossified urban forms.

hAllucinAtion Hallucinations may be spurred on by the intended or unintended misreading of real objects or situations that call into question physical and social conventions. As a process of seeing, they have the potential to elaborate new or unforeseen relationships and subjects. The potency of design, as expressed primarily through drawing and representation, is an inherently hallucinatory process of imagining fragments that compose a greater whole. Physical decay, expansive infrastructures, changing market forces, degrading ecologies, or the rising cost of natural resources are but a few of the instigators that have fed an emerging speculation on the ‘environmental’ as a theoretical and practical endeavor within design discourse.

The ability to imagine, which is to picture to oneself or form a mental image, is imperative to understanding the registers of drawing and map making. The different modes of picturing and their social, material, and environmental implications are traversed through a wide variety of intellectual and physical projects. As such, picturing is a means of engaging the contradictions between the abstract operations of modernity and the allegorical skill of art—a discrepancy that is not meant to be dissolved but reconfigured.

AtlAs The atlas, an archiving system first formalized in the 1570s by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in relation to a geographic context, was meant to collate all of the information and maps of the ‘known world’ into a single, comprehensive volume. Since its inception, the atlas has been used to speculate not only on the physical forms and shapes of the earth, but also draw the multiple attachments to land and water in terms of ideology, society, and design schemes.

Today, there is no formal, disciplinary synthesis that brings the cultural, physical, terrestrial and celestial layers of the Gangetic region into one picture plane. An atlas that combines these distinct, interrelated conditions is intended to provide a more agile method of representation and design schemes. Since Mercator’s atlas, artists, governments, scientists, and geographers have experimented with the range of scales and mediums that an atlas may engage. Gerhard Richter, a contemporary German artist, has used the atlas to combine photography, drawing, painting, and photo-journalism to explore a body of aesthetic interests over the last forty years. Richter explicitly surveys the representation of time and memory in his growing accumulation of images.

Reaching through the very heart of some of India's most densely populated cities, small towns, industrial zones, sacred sites, and mountainous forests, Ganges Water Machine by , composed of eight years of field and archival research, explores and theorizes the people and infrastructures that shaped this territory.

Ganges Water Machine is an atlas of the enterprise to make the Ganges River basin into a highly engineered landscape: it reveals the narratives and explanations that allowed engineers and planners to realize fantasies previously only imaginable on paper or in myth.

turally intensive territory. In this way, the publication makes use of field research, historic documentation, and existing infrastructures to better understand the animate, hydrological states of this environment and its unusual urbanization.

intRoDuction

This book focuses on the overlaps and juxtapositions of these three conditions: Population Density—Monsoon—Agriculture. It is an atlas of built and unbuilt projects designed to transform the Ganges River basin.

Where a desert may preserve a city or monument for thousands of years, a volatile alluvial corridor such as the Ganges River threatens to wash away entire cities and villages in a matter of days.

The compelling need to adapt to the drastic changes of the Gangetic Plains or disintegrate historically made climatic responsiveness the commanding theme of human settlement along this dynamic waterway. With a considerable amount of India’s agricultural production taking place in U.P., irrigation and agricultural production order not only the countryside but also many of the regional urban centers like Allahabad, Mirzapur, and Benares (Varanasi). Further compounding this agrarian space is a unique urban circumstance as nearly one-sixth of India’s one-billion-plus population resides in the state of U.P.

In terms of structure, this publication cuts a cross section through the different projects, provocations, and practices that have made this territory a reality. The content is subdivided into four overlapping categories of thought in terms of: geographies, geometries, figures, and states. Within each of these four divisions, infrastructure is examined in relation to the consolidated city (traditional, dense urban settlement) and open territories (namely the large, open space that accumulate diffuse forms of human settlement). These four systems of thought are further explored through drawings, essays, fables, mythology, gastronomy, and travelogues.

Density Moreover, the state of U.P. contains over 166 million people (according to the 2001 census) in an area smaller than Great Britain or Ghana, making it one of the densest spaces in the world (it would be the seventh largest country in the world in terms of population, trailing Brazil by just twenty million). It is estimated that by 2020 the state will reach nearly 270 million people, averaging a greater density than present-day Shanghai, China. Human settlement at this scale and density is without precedent.

Settlement patterns in traditional urban areas as well as the perceived countryside are highly dependent upon expansive tracts of infrastructure. Urbanism along canals, highways, and rail lines has become increasingly diffuse with the advent of mobile forms of water extraction— namely tubewells and smaller pumping mechanisms. Beyond the dense urbanism of a city like Mumbai or the IT centers of Bangalore and Hyderabad, all of which present a global face of modern India, there has come into being a territory of immense design potential with very little speculation by designers. The Ganges River Corridor in the state of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), appears outside the image of modern metropolitan living within India; however, upon closer observation, this “Cow Belt”1 of India is situated in the very center of a struggle to establish, for the past 150 years, a productive countryside with its affiliated infrastructures. The seat of former empires, principalities, and satrapies, the Ganges River Corridor presents a fertile meeting of religious and cultural heritage, agricultural cultivation, and diffuse forms of urbanization, supported by an elaborate network of hydrological and transportation infrastructures. The extreme changes in weather and climate caused by the onslaught of the wet monsoon (late-June through late-August) where the region transforms from an arid and parched condition to a wet and gelatinous one, necessitates a careful and thoughtful application of design at the scales of architecture and urbanism, especially as the seasonal and mechanical distribution of water are so intertwined with maintaining life and staving off famine and civil unrest. For this reason, it is a territory whose urbanization was culturally and historically bound by the seasonal rains of the wet monsoon, yet today expanded by modern forms of mechanical irrigation like canals, tubewells, and miniature hand-held pumping mechanisms.

The z-coordinate breaks the monotony of endless traffic and intolerable heat. It is a landscape wholly formed by the dynamics of ground water. The basin boasts the single highest and most continuous ground water potential in the entire country, which is largely fed by the rains from the monsoon. According to a 2010 report from the World Bank, India extracts nearly 230 cubic kilometers per year, making it the single largest user of ground water in the world. Some 85 percent of drinking water and 60 percent of irrigation for agriculture is derived from groundwater. Rather than a collision of “countryside versus city,” political and material conflicts arise over a shared set of support structures for water extraction. Stored in the voids and fractures within geologic materials such as soil, sand, and rock that occur beneath the surface of the land, aquifers fuel the diffuse forms of urbanization across this territory.

While geologically young, the Himalayan mountain range to the north forms a topographic barrier, shedding millions of tons of alluvium every year down the Ganges River valley during the monsoon season. The Mahābhārata, one of the principal epic poems of ancient India dating back to 1200- 800 B.C., describes the catastrophic potential of the Ganges when it depicts the need for Lord Shiv to break the fall of the Ganges within the locks of his hair, or the earth would shatter. The extreme changes in weather and climate caused by the wet monsoon season (late June through late August) — which dumps nearly a meter of rain over the season— transforms the region from arid and parched land to gelatinous silt. Due to this cyclical deluge in the flat plains, landscape morphologies are fundamentally transient in form.

Latitude, topography, and sporadic rainfall render every segment of the Ganges River basin hostile to permanent human dwelling. And yet, it has remained a locus of numerous civilizations for millennia. Separating the Bay of Bengal from the Arabian Sea, the landmass of the Indian subcontinent mixes an annual firewater cocktail of solar heat with land and water bodies, producing the tempestuous seasonal rains: monsoon.

From the air the land in the spring looks abstract, with jagged lines crisscrossing irregular grids of a beige cropland. By summer, stains and smudges of water ooze in every direction.

The slightest topographic shift in the ground inscribes a shape in water only perceptible to the experienced farmer. Flash floods and severe droughts are commonplace occurrences since time immemorial. For this reason, it is without doubt a territory whose urbanization was culturally and ideologically bound by these seasonal rains. Every monsoon season and successive solar cycle precipitates a critical turning point or crisis.

Historically, hydrological infrastructure like canals and bundhs (embankments) provided a consistent flow of water, countering the irregular patterns of rainfall.

Now, conditions in the Ganges River basin are intriguing from a meteorological perspective and overwhelming from a design point of view: this is due to the fact that few contemporary maps exist and factors like scorching wet summers and arid winters; unreliable public utilities and infrastructure; plastic bags clogging storm drains; the formation of shallow lakes within the first few hours of precipitation, spawning mosquitoes that spread malaria and dengue; and, most of all, rain.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Anthony Acciavatti, the principal investigator and author, is a graduate of Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and a principal of Somatic Collaborative, an award-winning architecture and urban design practice in New York City. He has taught at Columbia University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Northeastern University. For almost a decade, Acciavatti has traveled by foot, boat, and car documenting the expanse of the river Ganges, from its source in the Himalayas to the historic city of Patna nearly 1,000km downstream. A J. William Fulbright Fellowship as well as grants from the Ford Foundation and Harvard University, amongst others, have supported his work on the Ganges.

Mexico City: Between Geometry and Geography Felipe Correa and Carlos Garciavelez Alfaro

Unique in scope, scale, and civic aspiration, Mexico City is the ideal laboratory to test the capacity of urban design to construct a spatial synthesis from the geometric and organizational complexity of the city’s layered urban scenarios. Between Geometry and Geography: Mexico City examines—through photography, archival material, and analytical drawings—the urbanistic evolution of Mexico City. The volume focuses specifically on the relationship between major public works projects and the urban fragments they have created in order to construct a visual analysis of the most dominant urban morphologies at play in the city. Organized in seven topical chapters —From Lake to City, From City to Metropolis, Mobility Networks, Logistical Footprints, Housing Stock, Hydrological Landscapes, and Urban Visions— the book tests the ability of design to confront and break down the perceived immensity of Mexico City by singling out and analyzing key urban projects that have shaped the city for over 600 years. Furthermore, central to this volume is an exploration of how the methodological diversity of urban design can help rethink ongoing mobility projects in the city as the backbone for much more ambitious and integral urban projects of diverse scope and ambition.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Felipe Correa is an architect and urbanist based in New York City (USA) and Quito (Ecuador). He is Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Design Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he leads the South America Project research initiative. Correa is also founder of Somatic Collaborative, a research based design practice, which focuses on an experimental approach to architecture and urbanism, and engages a wide host of geographies and design procedures.

Correa holds a B.ARCH from Tulane University and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard.

Carlos Garciavelez Alfaro is a Mexican designer, architect, and urbanist. His research and design work departs from a trans-scalar approach to design that spans from fashion and interior furnishings to urban landscapes and open territories. Garciavelez is currently a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Before establishing his own design practice, Carlos worked for diverse design studios including Gabellini Shepard Associates in New York City and the Alexander McQueen fashion house in London. He holds a BFA and a B.ARCH from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design with distinction from Harvard.

The increasing concentrations of global flows have exacerbated the inequalities and spatial divisions of social classes. In such a context, an architecture or urbanism of equality in an increasingly inequitable economic condition requires a deeper exploration – to find a wide range of places to mark and commemorate the cultures of those excluded from the spaces of global flows. These do not necessarily lie in the formal production of architecture; rather, they often challenge it. Here the idea of a city is an elastic urban condition—not a grand vision, but a “grand adjustment.”

Rahul Mehrotra is the principal of architecture firm RMA Architects (founded in 1990 as Rahul Mehrotra Associates) of Mumbai, India and Professor of Urban Design and Planning and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) in Cambridge, Mass., USA. He has been one of the activists behind the declaration of urban precincts as conservation areas in Mumbai and one of the founding members of the Kala Ghoda area rejuvenation movement, the restoration of the Oval Maidan, and the formulation of several citizens' associations in the historic Fort District in Mumbai. He was also executive director of the Urban Design Research Institute (1994-2004), where he is now a trustee. The UDRI is also actively involved in researching and influencing policy for the historic district, and the city more generally.

Moving Landscapes

Urban highways are unique windows from which to grasp a city’s identity. They can, however, be responsible for the fragmentation of cities and the degradation of their adjacent living environments. As many urban highways are aging, concerns about their redevelopment, upgrading or dismantling are emerging in many cities of the world. By examining the meaning as well as the opportunities offered by urban gateway corridors, the book attempts to offer a unique perspective on issues related to this emerging landscape and transportation issue. More specifically, the book aims to describe the innovative approach to landscape infrastructure planning that was used for the YUL-MTL: Moving Landscapes initiative held in Montreal. Over two years, this initiative combined a design competition and a workshop with collaborative efforts between 20 public agencies to rethink a 17 km stretch of Montreal’s Autoroute 20 gateway corridor. Linking the downtown area to Montreal-Trudeau international airport, the corridor is mainly composed of transport infrastructures and industrial wastelands in dire need of revitalization, along with residential areas.

Overall, the book shows how the consideration of the landscape, [when it comes to development projects], offers not only a rich contextual knowledge from a transversal and multidisciplinary perspective, but also becomes a vector for the coherent planning of infrastructures and their integration within adjacent territories and within the city.

ABOUT THE EDITORS Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec is a landscape architect and environmental designer. Philippe is a Professor at the School of Landscape Architecture of the University of Montreal, where he was previously director from 1991 to 1996. He chairs a network of 23 academic institutions around the world to promote interdisciplinary research and multicultural dialogue on the future of urban landscapes.

Pursuing his interest in contemporary art, he was co-founder and artistic-director from 2000-2003 of the Métis International Garden Festival.

Sylvain Paquette conducts research at the Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design. He completed a PhD in Environmental Design at the University of Montreal and is currently Associate Professor at the School of Landscape Architecture

of the University of Montreal. His expertise resides in landscape sociology, which examines landscapes from social and cultural perspectives.

He has contributed to the renewal of landscape and planning studies, with regard to both theory and methodology, among others by developing landscape management tools.

Patrick Marmen is a research officer at the Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design and studio instructor at the School of Landscape architecture of the University of Montreal. Primarily interested in developing and improving the urban planning mechanisms that promote design quality in architecture and urban design, he was the professional advisor for the YUL-MTL: Moving landscapes international ideas competition. Of the twentieth-century large-scale design interventions inscribed into the Latin American city, the university campus is the most salient symbol of progress. The academy became an epicenter of twentieth-century architectural and urban experimentation and a unique urban development within major Latin American cities. This book examines the design and legacy of the principal Latin American campuses built in the past 60 years and traces the continental and transcontinental design influences that shaped these grounds, and map their spatial evolution. Finally, it explores the relevance of the autonomous university campus as an urban development pole in the city.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Carlos Garciavelez Alfaro is a Mexican designer, architect, and urbanist. His research and design work departs from a trans-scalar approach to design that spans from fashion and interior furnishings to urban landscapes and open territories.

Before establishing his own design practice Carlos worked for diverse design studios including Gabellini Shepard Associates in New York City and the Alexander McQueen fashion house in London. FLUX: Architecture in a Parametric Landscape focuses on the emerging field of advanced digital design. In Shibuya, hundreds of Japanese walk across a colossal intersection every few minutes manipulated by Tokyo’s relentless metropolitan thrall. But in its narrow backstreets and alleys, this roar dissolves into a mysterious calm. It was in one such backstreet that I chanced by Ishizawa. He was rolling home his daily collection of beer cans.

Ishizawa’s home is a space under the Japan Railway tracks, where he spends his nights and stores his daily keep for sale each Thursday. He is not the only one that has refused the government’s stipend for the homeless, and chosen instead to start his own business of gathering beer cans, to make about a third of that stipend each month. Each day, his friends and he take a prescribed route through the charged streets of Shibuya, and return to their blue tents and stick shelters to drink, cook and eat together. That day, Ishizawa invited me to his home. He introduced me to his friends.

He told me his story. With moist eyes he confessed that they would rather die under the train tracks than accept money from the government.

here is a story in the ancient Indian Panchatantra of a man lying motionless in the roadway, his face turned downward. A drunkard passing by assumes that he has fallen intoxicated; a thief suspects he is trying to hide something; a hermit in turn sees a meditating saint and bows in reverence. Each sees in the subject, a bit of themselves. The understanding of Japanese culture over the past century has been similar: each onlooker has seen in Japan what they have wanted to see, or rather seen a bit of themselves. Japan has been a mirror, or as the American architect Charles Moore put it “the dark waters in which Narcissus saw himself.”1 Since its opening to the world in the Meiji Era (circa 1868) after centuries of self-imposed isolation, the subject of Japan’s built environment as such has morphed into a complex intellectual discourse – between what is imported versus indigenous; between what is Japanese versus Western: There are Japan’s earliest Chinese influences versus their gradual transformation into distinct Japanese compounds.

There is the Euro-American curiosity with Japanese artifacts in the mid-nineteenth century versus Japan’s willful embrace of Western architectural styles in the thirties. There is German architect Bruno Taut’s 1933 appraisal of the Katsura Villa as the ultimate Japanese archetype versus Kenzo Tange and Yasuhiro Ishimoto’s 1960 documentation of the same building as a series of compositions resembling those of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. There is Metabolism, Japan’s response to Western Modernism versus Tokyo’s Disneyland.

The question of what is Japanese about Japan’s built environment has consequently become as bewildering as a Zen koan2. In attempting to answer this question, one has to drift somewhere between Japan and the West, somewhere between Japan’s nostalgia and utopia, and ultimately arrive at no necessarily fixed conclusion.

But this cultural complexity of Japan, as a collage of multiple dimensions and nuances, continues to be undermined by outside eyes when compared to the many stereotypes that still dominate how we know it. I for one started my own explorations on Japan with numerous such stereotypes, and my journey in exploring Japan through architecture and urbanism for twenty years has been essentially one of either validating or debunking these stereotypes for my own sake. It has led me to conclude – both as a practicing urbanist as well as educator – that Japan is not very well understood by the larger world, and that many of the deeper lessons it offers

Back in India, my father keeps a display of collectibles under the glass table-top in his office. One of them is a beautiful postcard of the colossal bronze Buddha in the Todaiji temple in Nara. I have admired it since I was barely three feet tall. Years later, I remembered that postcard, when I stood in front of the fifty-foot, five-hundred-ton gentle giant.

As I took in the daibutsu’s towering presence, I felt proud to trace it to my Indian lineage. After all, had it not been for the Indian sub-continent where the Buddha was born, there would have been no Todaiji. But then, in that dusky temple interior, I had another epiphany: Had it not been for the Greeks, we in India would have never given the Buddha the over-sized Apollonian majesty he now bears. It was the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE and flourished during the Kushan Empire that ushered the anthropomorphic rendition of the Buddha along with the development of Mahayana Buddhism. It was this IndoGreek trajectory that traveled to China and from there to Japan, and the daibutsu is the teleological end of that cultural combine.

The complexity of a cultural genome opens it up to all those who want to claim it: I can claim Todai-ji’s Buddha of Indian lineage, as much as the Greeks can claim his Indian sculptural ancestors as their own. The great Buddha at Todai-ji then has both Indian and Greek genes; he is a mongrel offspring of East and West.

Barcelona can be regarded as a prototype of a European Mediterranean city with a long urban tradition. As such, it has undergone a specific process of historic formation: density and compactness of urban form, evolution by extension rather than by reform, etc. A history of urban planning necessarily includes a summary of the territorial and urban experience, and pays particular attention to the physical dimensions of the city that condition its cultural and economic development.

This book centres on the construction of Barcelona, taking as its basis the most important planning operations and city projects, and drawing on various sources for the different phases. Its urban development has been very varied, even without taking into account the interventions of royalty or aristocrats that produced large avenues and parks. The local scale of many of the projects contrasts with the cosmopolitan aspirations that have made some of these interventions so innovative. Now, in the 21st century, new prospects are opening up thanks to the recent European institutional framework, particularly changes in the economic system as we enter a post-industrial phase, with the increasing importance of the media. It is difficult to gauge the spatial repercussions, but the urban planning history of Barcelona shows that it has already overcome major contradictions in recent centuries.

Barcelona can be regarded as a prototype of a European Mediterranean city with a long urban tradition. As such, it has undergone a specific process of historic formation: density and compactness of urban form, evolution by extension rather than by reform, etc. A history of urban planning necessarily includes a summary of the territorial and urban experience, and pays particular attention to the physical dimensions of the city that condition its cultural and economic development.

This book centers on the construction of Barcelona, taking as its basis the most important planning operations and city projects, and drawing on various sources for the different phases. Its urban development was varied, even without taking into account the interventions of royalty or aristocrats that produced large avenues and parks. The local scale of many of the projects contrasts with the cosmopolitan aspirations that have made some of these interventions so innovative; these might include some of the major projects carried out for special events, such as the events in 1888 (World Exhibition), 1929 (Electrical Industries Exhibition) and 1992 (Olympic Games).

A Line in the Andes — a one-year investigation developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Design — examines the transformative role of the first underground metro line currently being implemented in the city of Quito (Ecuador). Through archival material, original drawings, and essays Rahul Mehotra, Quito Mayor Augusto Barrera, Edgar Jacome, Pablo Perez Ramos, Martin Cobas, Graciela Silvestri, and Ana Maria Duran Calisto. This publication frames the metro project within the city's historic and current urban form, visualizing the urban potential of this contemporary valley-city. In doing so, the material documented in this book sets the stage for well-informed design deliberations regarding an urban future Quito deserves.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Felipe Correa is an architect and urbanist based in New York City (USA) and Quito (Ecuador). He is Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Design Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he leads the South America Project research initiative. Correa is also founder of Somatic Collaborative, a research-based design practice, which focuses on an experimental approach to architecture and urbanism, and engages a wide host of geographies and design procedures.

Correa holds a B.ARCH from Tulane University and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard.

Ramiro Almeida is a Loeb Fellow (2012-2013) at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He served as senior advisor for special projects and foreign affairs for the city of Quito. He led the effort to plan, design and implement the city's first subway line. It is the most recent of his wide variety of cultural and planning activities that have improved the quality of life in his home city.

Transects commemorates 100 years of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, which has worked to set the essential coordinates of what it now means to be a landscape architect in the 21st century. The book is organized into 10-year increments that capture a representative picture of the school’s exemplary vision, method, depth, and technique working across all scales. Placed between archival photographs and faculty research are many interesting anecdotes from former students as well as some wonderful items from the archives, such as Ian McHarg’s scribbles on a napkin, and quotes from James Corner’s studio syllabi. Histories in their own right, these items seem to say far more than words as they trace the big personalities of the former chairs, faculty, teachers, and administrators who have established the program’s reputation as an incubator of design intelligence.

Situated within a growing interest in new machine processes by the architectural community, Rise Tectonic Machines! documents Prof. Marcus Shaffer’s progress in designing and realizing semiautonomous, city-making machinery. In formulating this work, Shaffer’s writings touch upon various architectural automations past, present, and proposed; ranging from Homeric deidalia, to Tsutomu Nehei’s Builders; from Edison’s Monolithic Pour formwork, to Japanese efforts in saving the working methods of their master craftsmen through technology.
