5K fundraiser walk/race in Plantation Bay is scheduled for July 30 JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Fundraiser will help a village in Africa get a water purification system using water straight from the river.

During the weeks between graduating from the University of Miami with a Bachelor’s degree in Ecosystem Science and Policy, and starting law school at the University of Florida on August 8, Nika Hosseini decided to help an African village she has never visited, and people she only knows through emails and photos, by organizing a 5K family walk/run fundraiser.

After some research, and partnering with Ideas for Us, an international organization, she focused on Kiburara, Uganda, a village of 6,000 people in desperate need of a water purification system. “I have this foundation (NKHFoundation.org), and through this foundation I created Project Splash,” Hosseini said. “That project was accepted to the Clinton Global Imitative University.” The project subject was a natural fit for the environmental science major, who said water is “blue gold.” “There are 700 million people in the world who do not have access to clean water, and it seems people aren’t noticing,” she said. “We have bottles of water, showers are no problem; we go to the bathroom — no problem.” Hosseini has photos of water taps in Kiburara that don’t work, forcing the residents to walk three to four kilometers to the nearest of water source, a river where animals bathe and defecate. “They clean the water as best they can and use it, and they get sick,” Hosseini said. “It’s a cyclical pattern of poverty. They want to go to school, but they get sick from the water. They can’t go to school, so they can’t get a job, and they are back to square one.” Hosseini is hoping enough

She also has 16 sponsors. “A lot of people are willing to help, and there are companies that are interested in what I am doing,” she said. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, a string backpack filled with goodies, and a post-race brunch at the clubhouse. The top three men and women who finish will receive plaques. Music in the park Fun, food, music, dancing and more, all within Plantation Bay, and all for free.

JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

While the air conditioning units are running nonstop, Sarah Serle, community ambassador for ICI Homes, is looking forward to October, and planning her first Music in the Park event for the residents of Plantation Bay. “I am passing the torch to Sarah,” Lisa Egle, corporate marketing manager said. The free event has been an entertainment mainstay, two times a year, since 2005, in April and October. “We started this in 2005 as a way to get the residents all together,” Egle said. “It’s sponsored by ICI Homes and we usually get about 300-350 residents. We time these based on when the most residents are here.” The next Music in the Park isn’t until Oct. 16, but plans are already being made, and residents who would like a vendor table can make their reservations. “We offer that for free. We will set up a table for anyone who wants to showcase their art, jewelry, whatever. One year we had someone who made glass ornaments,” Egle said. Serle started working at Plantation Bay last November, and helped Egle with the April event. Now she is looking forward to being in charge of her own event.

“It’s exciting,” Serle said. “I am getting to meet more of the residents.” Music in the Park is a family event, with a bounce house and face painting for the children, music and dancing for the adults, and food and drink for all. All residents need to bring are chairs, blankets or towels to sit on. Golf carts seem to be the transportation of choice to the event at Prestwick Park. For the past two years Ross Brown has entertained the crowd with everything from country to rock and roll, and has been known to join the crowd in the Electric Slide.

“We are going to try and change it up this year,” Egle said. “Ross is great, but we want to offer new things so people will continue coming back. We want bands that will get the residents out and having fun.” Residents will receive an e-blast with more information, and the electric signs at the entrance will also advertise the event in October. If rain cancels the event, the same two avenues of communication will be used. “This event is for everybody,” Egle said. “It doesn’t matter their ages, it’s for the community.”

Portuguese holiday celebrated Palm Coast joined Portuguese communities around the world in celebration of Dia de Portugal. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Portuguese Honorary Counsel Caesar DePaco stepped outside his home in Plantation Bay to greet his guests on Friday, June 10. The morning brunch was in celebration of Portugal Day, the country’s day of independence. The flag of Portugal was raised in the courtyard of the home by DePaco and Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts, and followed by the singing of the Portuguese National Anthem. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect we would have

the Portuguese Consulate in Palm Coast,” Netts said. “But I am not surprised. I’m a regular guest at the Portuguese American Club, and all of their events are always well attended.” The Portuguese Consulate opened in Palm Coast in April 2015. Prior to that the consulate had been in Orlando. DePaco said Florida has an estimated 150,000 Portuguese residents, with at least 10,000 living in Palm Coast. DePaco was joined by his wife, Deanna Paovani-DePaco, who is expecting the couple’s second child in September, and daughter, Valentina. Portuguese Congresswoman Mara Joao Avila, his in-laws, Guilo Padovani, general consulate, and Judy Padovani, and Father Antonio dos Santos from Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church in Flagler Beach, were just some of the dignitaries in attendance. County Commissioner Frank

Meeker, who attended with his wife, Debbie, described DePaco as a “down-to-earth” type of man. “His wife is going to be out of town next week,” Meeker said. “He didn’t know what he was going to do in her absence. So he is going to come over to our house for a game of chess.” Many of the same people gathered again, on Friday evening, at the Open House of the Portuguese Consulate’s new offices on the first floor of the Chiumento building in Town Center.

DID YOU KNOW? The Portuguese celebrate Dia de Portugal, their national holiday, on June 10. The date commemorates the death of Luis de Camoes, known for the national poem of Portugal – Lusiadas. The epic poem depicts the achievements of the Portuguese in world explorations in the 16th century. Portugal was conquered by Spain in 1580, the same year Camoes died. Portugal regained its independence on Dec. 1, 1640. The country’s national day has been celebrated on June 10, ever since.

Portuguese Secretary of State of Community visits Portuguese Consulate in Palm Coast Palm Coast Consulate is the nearest location to obtain official documents without going to Washington, D.C. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

The third floor office of the Portuguese consulate in Palm Coast was filled with dignitaries and members of the Portuguese American Club in Palm Coast, many in colorful folklore dress, all gathered to welcome Secretary of State of Portuguese Communities Abroad, Jose Cesario, and the new Honorary Consul, Caesar DePaco. The consulate at 145 City Place, officially opened on April 1, 2015, is a little bit of Portugal right in Palm Coast. As with all American consulates and embassies, the area they occupy is sovereign soil. “Right now you are on Portuguese soil,” Consulate Assessor Eddie Branquinho said. The group anxiously awaited the arrival of Cesario, DePaco and Congresswoman Maria Joao Avila, one of two elected representative in the Portuguese parliament for citizens living abroad, to officially open the consulate and introduce the new Consul. Cesario spoke in Portuguese

to those gathered, slipping into English for the benefit of the few present who did not speak the language. “It is very important for our government to be here with you,” Cesario said. The increase in the Portuguese community in Palm Coast and Florida is being credited in part to a shift in retirement destinations. “There are more Portuguese who after working in the U.S. are not returning to Portugal to retire, but moving to Florida,” DePaco said. The consulate office is one of 16 in the United States, including the embassy in Washington, D.C. Palm Coast is the only consul in the state that can provide passports, birth and death certificates and other legal documents. The nearest office to Palm Coast to obtain documents is in Washington, D.C. Visas are not available because they are not required to travel to Portugal. “We are a country that gets along with other countries,” Cesario said. Accompanying DePaco was his

wife, Deanna Padovani-DePaco, their six-year old daughter, Valentina, and Padovani-DePaco’s parents. The DePaco’s will initially split their time between their home in New Jersey and Palm Coast to accommodate Valentina’s schooling, but a full-time move is expected. DePaco has a PhD in Psychology, and was a psychologist in Jersey City when he came to

this county in 1994. He is also the founder and CEO of a family business, Summit Nutritionals, manufacturers of nutritional and nutraceutical raw materials. The consul will be moving to the first floor of the same building this fall increasing the Portuguese consulate office space to 3,000 square feet.

Marco Polo lost to Mickey Mouse, and Plantation Bay was born Once upon a time there was an amusement park in Ormond Beach. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

One of the few memories of a short-lived theme park, off Interstate 95 and Old Dixie Highway, exists on Googlemaps.com. There, the road known as Old Dixie Highway, is still labeled “Marco Polo Blvd.” Old Dixie Highway stops on the I-95 overpass. There are a very few photos, and brochures that can be found online. The brochures boasted: “Like Marco Polo himself, you will be wonderstruck at the authentic Oriental splendor of your personal voyage of discovery as you journey into the exotic four worlds of the Far East, Turkey, India, China Japan and beautiful Venice, your port of embarkation.” Timing for the amusement park couldn’t have been worse. It opened on Dec. 28, 1970; 10 months later, on Oct. 1, 1971, Disney World opened its gates in Orlando. Japanese gardens accounted for 500 of the 5,000-acre park, complete with a fishing village. An introductory annual admission was $2 for adults and $1 for children. The cost later increased to $2.50 for adults.

Less than three years after it opened, the park was closed in October 1974. In February 1975 there were two fires in just over a week. Reopening in May 1975 the park was renamed “Passport to Fun World,” but the gates closed for good in 1976. Did you ever visit Marco Polo Park? Share your memories for an upcoming story by emailing me at jacque@palmcoastobserver.com.

Tip on feeding wildlife: DON’T Other safety notes: garage doors, traffic laws, and updating Capsure STEVE CLAIR DIRECTOR OF SECURITY

In light of the recent tragic incident at Walt Disney World, I’d like to remind residents and guests that anywhere there is a body of water in Florida, no matter how big or how small (even swimming pools and fountains), the potential for alligators and venomous snakes is a very real possibility. In the last few months of this year, we have had five “nuisance alligators” removed from Planta-

tion Bay waterways. To be classified as a “nuisance,” they have to meet several criteria areas, such as being not afraid of people, showing aggression, or showing “interest” in people or pets. One of the worst things we can do to cause this situation is to feed an alligator (or any wildlife). I know it is cool when visitors can get a closer look at an alligator by luring it in with food or bait, but please, don’t feed them. A fed alligator is a dead alligator! It only takes one time of hand feeding for an alligator to lose its natural fear of humans, and that starts a vicious cycle that can have tragic results for the alligator, pets and humans. Additionally, it’s against the law to feed alligators and wildlife! If an alligator is showing any of the signs listed above, and is more than 4½ feet in length, please contact Plantation Bay Security. We will contact our Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) licensed alligator trapper, to assess and handle the incident.

A familiar face is back on the links and just in time for renovations Bob Gruber is the new golf course superintendent JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

In May, the Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club named Bob Gruber as the head golf course superintendent. “We are thrilled to welcome Bob back to Plantation Bay,” said Gregory Brousse, managing director of golf operations for ICI Homes. “Bob has been in the golf course business for more than 25 years, and his diverse industry expertise will contribute significantly to the revitalization initiative underway at Plantation Bay.” In his new role, Gruber will manage the course operations, maintenance and staff for the Prestwick, Club de Bonmont, and Westlake golf courses at Plantation Bay. His experience includes working mostly with private courses in Florida including the Prestwick golf course at Plantation Bay, and the golf course at Amelia National Golf & Country

Club in Nassau County. Gruber will oversee the golf course renovation and enhancement project currently underway. Club de Bonmont, was closed in May for a significant tee-togreen renovation. The course is expected to re-open in September. A similar renovation is planned for the Prestwick golf course in the summer of 2017. When the work on the Club de Bonmont and Prestwick course is complete, Plantation Bay will evaluate the nine-hole Westlake course for future enhancements. “These enhancements are designed to increase membership value and make the club’s member experience more enjoyable,” Brousse said. “Once everything is complete, Plantation Bay, which offers 45 holes of golf and allows private carts, will unquestionably be one of the best golf course communities in Florida.” Courtesy photo

ark A. Youd, who has called Plantation Bay home for more than 14 years, graduated from Daytona State College on May 16. He earned his degree in Engineering Technology. He worked full time while attending classes; first at the Kennedy Space Center on the shuttle Endeavour; and, for the past five years, at Northrop Grumman in St. Augustine. Youd spends much of his free time working on his home, and almost acre-size garden, in Plantation Bay. In his free time he is often seen planting trees, cutting the lawn, or painting the outside of his home. His career began when he was a 16-year-old, and still in high school in Bristol, England, with British Aerospace, building the Concorde. He never lost his interest in the field of aviation, and demonstrated that by making the 69-mile trip (each way) to the Kennedy Space Center from Plantation Bay. One of his saddest days at KSC, was when he helped his coworkers get Endeavour ready for the final launch. He promised his wife Jane they

would celebrate their upcoming 25th wedding anniversary at the Kennedy Space Center, where they married, in the rocket garden, on the 22nd anniversary of the moon landing, and that he would have his long desired college degree before that date – July 20. “He made it by the skin of his teeth,” his wife said. “Mark can fix anything that doesn’t breathe, and he will make a great engineer. It’s never too late.” she said. The image was photographed by an Expedition 22 crew member in 2010.

SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR Authorization to construct the fifth Space Shuttle orbiter, as a replacement for Challenger, was granted by Congress on August 1, 1987. Endeavour (OV105) first arrived at KSC’s Shuttle Landing Facility May 7, 1991, atop NASA’s new Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (NASA 911). The space agency’s newest orbiter began flight operations in 1992 on mission STS49, the Intelsat VI repair mission. Endeavour is named after the first ship commanded by 18th century British explorer James Cook. On its maiden voyage in 1768, Cook sailed into the South Pacific and around Tahiti to observe the passage of Venus between the Earth and the Sun. During another leg of the journey, Cook discovered New Zealand, surveyed Australia and navigated the Great Barrier Reef. Source: NASA

A wreath is placed during the Memorial Day Service in Prestwick Park on May 30.

The annual ceremony, that was started four years ago, continues to grow. MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

restwick Park was packed on Monday, May 30, for the annual Memorial Day services. The annual event began in 2012 by Betsy and Scott Wagner. The couple continues, with their own army of volunteers, to decorate the walkways with American flag and the gazebo in Prestwick Park with red, white and blue bunting. Scott Wagner is a retired U.S. Army colonel, and a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In 2012, 50 residents participated in the observance. This year there were nearly 300 people who came to pay their respects.
