AMERICAN DREAM 8 NOVEMBER 2016

VOLUME 3, NO. 3

Well, we dodged a missile

JOHN GAMIN HOA PRESIDENT

The devastation we could have incurred from Hurricane Matthew could have been catastrophic. We need to be very thankful that no one, to my knowledge, was hurt or killed, and that home damage was minimal. Yes, we still have some cleanup to be done. Please be patient. It will get done; we are not the only community that sustained damage. I would like to say a big “thank you” to several people. First, Security Manager Steve Clair. Steve worked the front gate alone during the storm. He came in at 3 a.m. and worked past 8 p.m., taking phone calls from residents, and keeping residents informed. Steve was clearing debris from roads so that vehicles could get through Friday night as well. Harry Wilson worked the U.S. 1 gate, with no power for most of the time. Plantation Bay is very fortunate to have such dedicated and hardworking staff. Next I want to thank Margie Hall, property manager, who had sustained damage at her own home, but still came on property at first light and worked with Steve Clair and Steve Martian, on the recovery phase. Some of you who did not return until later in the week have no idea of the magnitude of the damage done in parts of the community. Martian had his crew in here with heavy equipment and cleared most of SEE PRESIDENT’S PAGE 2

Happy Birthday, Tini! Family and friends enjoyed swapping stories about Tini Gentile at her party in September. While she received many gifts at her party, her eyes lit up when she opened the box with a beautiful magnifying glass. “Now this is something I really can use,” she exclaimed.

have set up an automatic pay system and who have paid the fourth quarter of 2016, you should go ahead and change the quarterly amount in your system to reflect the change. This did not happen by magic. We are able to do it because of the hard work of our management staff and the great work of the budget committee, chaired by treasurer Marty Garbarino, with members Phil Peters, Russ Reinke, Bob Anderson and Mike Mazur.

the roads quickly. If it is still here at this writing, take a look at the pile of debris located in the parking lot of the Tennis & Fitness Center. I would also like to thank the Flagler County utility operation, as we had water through the entire storm. We did experience a line break the day after the storm, but they were quick to fix it. I would also like to thank some folks who will not read this. Power crews from Oklahoma and Arkansas helped FPL restore power within a few days — much better than the week or two after Charlie went through in 2004. And thanks to the officials of Flagler County, who with FEMA’s help cleaned up the fallen debris in a timely manner, considering the magnitude of the damage and the wide area of damage. Now that it is over, I again ask for patience with the recovery. Volusia County passed an ordinance that would allow them to pick up debris in private communities, and by this writing I will have signed the required documents to begin the process. However, I am still not able to tell you when. As soon as we know anything, we will let you know the schedule and rules.

It wouldn’t be unusual for a veteran to work out at the fitness center most mornings, or that he can do a deep knee bend, except that this veteran will be 91 on Jan.13. Herschel Nichols, best known as Ben, enlisted in the Navy right out of high school, when he was 17 years old. “He was the son of a sharecropper in Mississippi,” his daughter Tina Goolsby said. “He and his brothers were out in the cotton field picking cotton most of their lives. When they got old enough, they wanted to get out of those cotton fields, and that’s what motivated my dad to join the Navy.” “I was highly motivated,” Nichols agreed. “But something you learn on the farm, you learn discipline and to do a good job in what you’re doing, and that served me in the Navy.” That motivation and work ethic took him on a career and adventure of a lifetime. “I enlisted in the Navy in World War II as a seaman apprentice, and retired as a lieutenant commander on January 1, 1972,” Nichols said. “I held all of the ranks. I was a mustang.”

A mustang is slang term in the United States Armed Forces, referring to a commissioned officer who began his or her career as an enlisted service member. ABOARD THE USS MANILA BAY

After training, Nichols was assigned to the USS Manila Bay, in ordinance. “Our job was to take back all islands the Japanese had,” Nichols said. “We were to get ground support to the landing forces , the marines and army landing on the islands.” He was in the Pacific for two years, with one 30-day leave. The leave was while the Manila Bay was in dry dock, being repaired after two Kamikaze pilots dove their planes into the carrier deck, destroying nearly the aircraft on deck. “We thought we were going to sink, but we saved the ship,” Nichols said. “We lost all of the planes on the flight deck. Some were out on a mission, but there were 10 or 12 planes on ship when the planes dove into the flight deck.” The 30-day leave was the only time Nichols returned home while he was at war. “His parents thought he was

dead,” Tina Goolsby said. “He knocked on the door, and his dad answered the door. He said that was the very first time his dad hugged him. His mom cried.” “The Japanese propaganda broadcasted, and when they hit a ship they would say they sunk it, and they almost did,” Nichols said. Nichols was in the Pacific theater for two years, and during that time he was in nine major battles and received nine battle stars. AFTER THE WAR

After the war, Nichols was stationed at Chincoteague, Virginia, doing military experiments with radio-controlled planes, but the job he described as “the most interesting duty I ever had” was in New Mexico working with the Atomic Energy Commission. He was also on one of two planes that did the hydrogen bomb test on Bikini Atoll. “Dad was chosen for an elite team, to make the hydrogen bomb fit the plane that would be able to take off and land on an aircraft carrier,” Goolsby said. “I loved the Navy; even in the war, I loved the navy,” Nichols said. “I suppose I was born a military man.”

Bringing Christmas to Espanola JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Seven-year-old Tristan is hoping for a remote control car or truck, 9-year-old Destiny wants an African-American fashion doll, while the teenagers are asking for gift cards. These are just some of the wishes on the Angel Tree in the pro shop at the Prestwick Club. Another tree can be found at the Plantation Bay Fitness Club. The ornaments on these trees are cards printed with the names, ages and wishes of children in Espanola, a small community off County Road 13 in Bunnell. Traditionally, residents of Plantation Bay select a card or two, then purchase and wrap the gift. The kids’ wishes will come true, thanks to the Plantation Beach Community Outreach group and a very generous community. “We have 18 families — 42 children — the same as last year,” this year’s organizer, Marilyn Meeske, said. “We are having fundraisers to raise between $3,000 and $3,500.”

In previous years, the outreach group has given out a Christmas party at the Espanola Community Center. This year, the kids aren’t just receiving, they also have something to give. “This year there will be a Christmas program at the church,” Meeske said. “The kids are actually presenting us, their parents and grandparents, with a Christmas program with songs and skits.” Meeske said the program will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church, at 108 Knox Road in Espanola, and is open to the public. “This year is different because the children are engaged in the program,” Meeske said. “We will be taking the gifts to the homes. It’s a very, very, personal connection and gives us an opportunity to really engage with the families.” The 14 volunteers don’t disappear after the gifts are unwrapped and the holidays are a memory. “This is not a ‘once a year someone donates money, and we wrap things up, and get that once-a-year feel-good,’” Meeske

said. “We do things all year long with these families. We look at them as our sister community.” The group also sponsors the senior-to-senior program that helps a graduating senior from the community. This year, there is only one senior in the area, so the group will go to the local high schools and work with them to identify students that may be graduating under what Meeske called, “extremely difficult circumstances.” Last year’s recipient was a homeless teen living and doing her homework in a car; she was accepted to the University of Chicago. “She got a full ride,” Meeske said. “She was one motivated student.” Meeske learned that while the student earned a full scholarship, it didn’t include the summer orientation. The outreach group posted a list of the students the community had helped. “When we got to the homeless child, money just started showing up,” Meeske said. “We bought

her a computer, and magically two airline tickets were able to be purchased for the orientation.” The magic was performed by an anonymous donor who lives in Plantation Bay, and even Meeske does not know the identity of the donor. “Just quietly, the money arrived,” Meeske said. The group also makes sure the students can enjoy their senior year and their prom by providing tickets, tux rentals, dresses and hair appointments. Meeske’s favorite project during the year is the School House Project, a year-long project, working one-on-one with the students. “They have a little school house that they have turned into a community center, next to the church,” Meeske said. “One of the elders of the community is there, and the kids come for tutoring. This year, our group has eight tutors. You get to know the kids and what they like.” A new initiative planned after January 2017 is the Helping Hands project, to freshen up and do small repairs to the community center. “Our first project is to paint the inside and outside of the building, and do minor fix-ups. They’ll accept a little bit of help; they don’t want a lot,” Meeske said. The ladies also enjoy receiving thank-you notes back from the kids after the holidays and after they have gone off to college.

Very special Christmas trees have been decorated with wishes.

Hard work is an essential element to the great American dream. Success only feels like success if you’ve got blood, sweat, and tears to show for it — and Csaba Arnold Kolozsvari has done his fair share of sweating. A lifelong bodybuilder and coowner of Revive Health and Fitness, Kolozsvari moved to the United States from Hungary 17 years ago in pursuit of becoming like his idol, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kolozsvari started training when he was 13, soon after seeing Schwarzenegger for the first time, and started competing when he was 19. Though his original goal when he came to America was to become a professional body builder, he’s glad it didn’t happen. “I always said I’m going to live for my body, and not my physical capabilities,” he said. “Unfortunately, there’s just too much risk taken, which I don’t believe in. I’m glad somehow life trans-

ferred me to the things I’m doing now instead of me focusing on me just going crazy trying to become a professional athlete.” Still, during his first five years in America, he struggled to make ends meet, lived in a home without a bathroom and was almost blackmailed by an ex and sent back to Hungary. “I tell my clients, ‘When you go through hell, keep going,’ just like Winston Churchill said,” Kolozsvari said. “So I kept going, and a year after all that, things started to get better.” In 2010, he opened up Revive Health and Fitness and eventually joined forces with his best friend and co-owner, Daniel Legault. He said he’s grateful to have had clients who have followed him from location to location, eventually landing in Ormond Beach. And while he’s felt the success of his American dream for some time, this past month it became official. “I took the citizenship test Sept. 3, and I bought my house Sept. 15,” he smiled. “I thought it would take a while to get sworn in, but they called me a week later and told me the ceremony would be on Sept. 30. And then the day after, that I won my contest.” The contest was the 2016 Daytona Beach Classic, a National Physique Committee bodybuilding competition. Kolozsvari won first place in the Masters over 40 Division and third place in the Novice Division, where he said fellow Ormond Beach competitor Mark Cunningham “accidentally” beat him. Looking forward, Kolozsvari plans on updating the home he bought in Plantation Bay and competing in another competition at the end of the year. Though the process of swearing in was moving in itself, he said, when he passed the citizenship test, his big American dream felt real. “Knowing I passed the test, that moment hit me the hardest,” he said. “It was when I realized I had actually made it all happen.” Courtesy photo

Once again, Paulette Brockett was appointed to sit at the table at the bottom of the driveway to accept the $5 per person charge that covered the cost of the burgers, hot dogs and trimmings, and the donations for the food bank. “Everybody comes because this is a great way to meet and talk with your neighbors,” Brockett said. “The generosity is wonderful in this neighborhood. Steve Meeske, George Fortuna, Jim McKenna and my husband, Steve Brockett, were out here early this morning setting this up.” With a smile on her face, Nancy Lee balanced a plate of homemade cupcakes for the bake sale in the garage. It was one more way to raise money for the food bank. Bette Rountree, the president of Church Women United,

the group that operates the food bank, was in Louisville, Kentucky, attending the 75-year celebration of the Church Women United organization. She is familiar with Fortuna and his neighborhood’s annual fundraiser, and said the timing is always perfect. This year’s event netted $415 in cash donations, and 397 pounds of food.

“Supplies are always down at the end of the summer months,” Rountree said. “The food programs at school aren’t there, and the kids are home. We are in the process of restocking the shelves and appreciate what they do for us.”

Family and friends enjoyed swapping stories about Gentile at her party in September. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Surrounded by family and friends Tini Gentile celebrated yet another milestone in her life on Sept. 26: It was her 99th birthday. Ladies came into the Prestwick Club after a morning on the golf course. Gentile is a golfer, but wasn’t able to play on that day. “I didn’t start playing golf until I was 55 years old,” Gentile said. “They claim I am very steady.” Ask her about the past 99 years, and your jaw is guaranteed to drop. Her life has been filled with everything from beauty pageants to baseball greats. She was a runner up in a national beauty pageant in 1934, but was unable to go to Madison Square Gardens for the final pag-

eant because of responsibilities at home. She married Edward Gentile on June 11, 1939, in the Audubon Ballroom in New York. “Our names were on the marquee,” she said. “On July 4, my husband took me to Yankee Stadium, and I was there when Lou Gehrig gave his farewell speech.” In 1970, the movie “The People Next Door” was shot at her house. She has lived in Plantation Bay since 2000 and is known not only for her golf skills but also for an impressive collection. “I have at least 100 hats,” she said. While she received many gifts at her party, her eyes lit up when she opened the box with a beautiful magnifying glass. “Now this is something I really can use,” she exclaimed.
