Family plans to spread the Christmas spirit WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

To be ready for the start of the holiday season, it’s sometimes necessary to start early. Especially if you decorate your lawn with more than 100 inflatable figures, laser lights, an illuminated walkway and lights synchronized to music. David and Brandy Schoolcraft, and their kids Dillon and Cheyenne, are inviting the community to drive by or walk the paths through the decorations at their home at 111 Pine Creek Court.

They plan to have them completed by Thanksgiving night. Their neighbors enjoy the display, so the Schoolcrafts want to get the word out to others and spread the Christmas spirit. David Schoolcraft said he has noticed visitors taking pictures in past years, so the family tries to set up good photo opportunity spots along the paths, such as a candy cane arch and a Santa with a countdown clock. “When we first started, the neighbors thought we were nuts,” Brandy Schoolcraft said. “But they’ve come around. I love to see the kids’ faces and the adults’ faces.” The lights will be timed to the Christmas music on radio station

99.5, for those driving by who want the full experience. Brandy Schoolcraft traces her decorating urge back to her mother, who painted figures cut out of wood for their display. David also has a history of holiday decorating. When he worked as a fireman in Indiana, before his retirement, he helped decorate a haunted barn for Halloween each year. The family also goes all out for Halloween, so they have a lot of decorations to store. They have an attic in their garage, as well as a small barn on their property. Asked how long they spend setting up the decorations, the Schoolcrafts have a good laugh. They said they started on Nov. 1. As the family ages, it takes lon-

ger to get the decorations out and put them away, family members said. A Boy Scout troop helped them put away the Halloween decorations this year. They had one unexpected guest while the Halloween decorations were up — a storm named Matthew. They put the inflatables down for the storm and used bags of mulch to hold them in the wind. They lost little in the way of decorations, but the roof of their house was damaged. “The hurricane damaged our roof but it didn’t change our spirits,” David Schoolcraft said.

The church's 25-foot steeple came "tumbling down" after the hurricane.

“It’s a miracle those didn’t break,” said Gilbert Dudley Jr., pointing to the stained glass windows on the side of the Historic New Bethel A.M.E. Church. “We’re still alive.”

The church's sign still encourages people to come to service, stating that their doors are still open.

Unfortunately, the church’s steeple was not so lucky. The 25-foot structure was ripped off the church’s roof, tumbled down the side of the building, finally landing on the ground — where it still remains almost two months after the storm. The church’s roof suffered damage, along with the roofs of the church’s building across South Yonge Street — which was where the church originally started in 1885 — and the parsonage, where newly installed Pastor Phyllis Brown was just starting to move in. “I was assigned as pastor a week before the hurricane,” she said. “I had one service there on Sunday, and that following Friday the hurricane hit.” Pastor Brown recently created a GoFundMe page to raise $70,000 to help repair the historic buildings and the parsonage. According to the page, the insurance company told the church that there is no coverage for hurricane damage and has refused to pay. Repairs need to start as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the interior of the buildings. “I’ve found that the people

Volusia County has made the annual passes renewable so they do not need to be scraped off windshields. “The passes make great holiday gifts,” said Jessica Winterwerp, county coastal director. Residents and visitors with “2016” written on their current pass are asked to remove the sticker from their windshield before going to a toll booth to purchase their new pass. If it states “Renewable” on the pass, do not remove.

Sewage spilled The FDOT contractor working at 1628 W. Granada Boulevard broke a three-inch sewer pipe, and 2,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled out into the construction area at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. It was cleaned up and city Utilities Manager David Ponitz called it a minor incident. The contractor is working on the eastbound side of West Granada Boulevard, lengthening and widening the turn lane onto southbound Interstate 95. This type of accident is not unusual because of the many underground lines, Ponitz said. The workers dammed up the site, and a tanker truck arrived to pump up sewage that had pooled up. The area was then disinfected with bleach and lime. No nearby private property was affected.

Second debris pass almost done The City’s contractors, DRC and Crowder Gulf, will be complete with the second pass of picking up Hurricane Matthew debris on Nov. 29, but will continue collecting construction debris. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Waste Pro will resume normal yard waste operations. As of Nov. 20, 8,434 loads of debris had been collected (415,710 cubic yards) in 41 days. Pirates take over Tomoka State Park The inaugural Tomoka State Park Pirate Raft Race was held Nov. 19. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

When Anastasia Harrison first started participating in the Cypress Creek Raft Race in Alabama, there were about 50 rafts. By the time she left, there were over 700 entries. She hopes to bring that kind of popularity to the Tomoka State Park Pirate Raft Race in Ormond Beach.

Held Nov. 19, five different teams created their own handmade rafts and powered their way down the Tomoka River using only their own strength to battle the wind and the elements. Harrison, who’s the captain of the Krewe of the 13, hosted the event as a fundraiser for The St. Francis House in St. Augustine. “In Florida, there is so much water,” she said. “So why not?” Dean Demented, Grumpy Gray Beard, Compass Rose and Swilly

How to make it through Black Friday without getting a black eye If you must go, go prepared.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Black Friday is one of those holiday traditions we all love to hate. We grump and moan about how greedy corporations are taking away from quality family time, but then right after dinner, we eagerly line up outside of Target to get a new TV. In reality, trash-talking Black Friday is just another way to get into the holiday spirit. I mean, of course I’m going to complain about the long lines and the lack of time to properly digest my Thanksgiving dinner. But like, I’m still gonna go. Because no matter how much I try to deny it, it doesn’t feel

like Christmas until I’m elbow to elbow with total strangers pulling scarves out of a box labeled “$5 and under.” Not every tradition has to be built with the intent of love and togetherness. Some are created purely for entertainment and selfish shopping. So even if you’re still telling all your friends that you’re not going to Black Friday this year, you might want to memorize my golden rules of surviving this unique holiday. You know, just in case. RULE #1: Don’t plan on actually buying anything. Take it from me, having a list of items you want to buy never works. You can go through every coupon book and gift guide, download the app and be the first in line and there’s still an 80% chance you’ll be disappointed. Go shopping with a relaxed mindset, and maybe a few things you’d like to check out and I promise you’ll have more fun. Besides, the best Black Friday gifts are always unexpected. Like mittens with cat faces on them, or the cell phone case I

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.” FRIEDRICH HAYEK “Road to Serfdom,” 1944

bought last year that was literally just a nose, for example. RULE #2: Understand that everyone is probably just as annoyed as you are. Don’t huff and puff when someone accidentally runs over your foot with their shopping cart. The magic of Black Friday wears off in about 20 minutes, and then everyone realizes it’s just a glorified traffic jam. A little kindness can go a long

way. And if you can’t do that, keeping your mouth shut will be just as effective. RULE #3: Remember that the best, best part is holidaythemed lattes. I’m sorry, but if you don’t start your late night/early morning standing behind 20 people to get a peppermint mocha latte, then did you even Black Friday?

WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

You can sit in a boat under a bridge anywhere in the U.S. and not worry about human waste being sprayed on you, partially thanks to Bob Lee, former Florida game warden. How this came about and other stories were related by Lee on Nov. 18 at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, while promoting his book, “Backcountry Lawman.” He was a game warden in Florida for 30 years until 2007. The bridge story involved one the largest environmental cases in Florida history. At one time, Amtrak had an exemption from environmental laws and could release liquefied sewage from its trains. Lee was assigned by state officials to help the lawyer preparing for trial against Amtrak. He was told to find a victim that could testify at trial, in other words, someone who had been dumped on. Lee staked out a train trestle crossing the St. Johns River. “I spent three months watching trains pass by,” he said at the library presentation. Then one day a runabout with two couples fishing was parked under a bridge just as an Amtrak train passed over and released waste. Lee quickly made his way along the bank to the boat, asking, “Did anyone get sprayed?” A woman in her 70s pointed to yellow and brown spots on her pants. She then told the warden she would never fish

again under a bridge unless she had an umbrella in one hand and a train schedule in the other. The case went to trial and they won in state court. Federal laws were changed in the 1990s and now Amtrak trains have holding tanks. “Today Amtrak does not poop on anyone anywhere in the United States,” Lee said. His adventures often involved rescuing animals, such as bald eagles. He had one assistant who believed he could handle an eagle without any coaching because he had worked with snakes and alligators a zoo. But he ended up in the hospital after an eagle put its talons through the palm of his hand. He said the assistant became receptive to instructions about how to catch animals after that. His book contains stories of catching poachers, but also

some who got away. He said bad guys get away from every law enforcement agency. “I wanted it to be realistic,” he said. MONKEY FISHING

During his career, he spent a lot of time chasing people who were “monkey fishing,” cranking a small motor and dropping live wires into the water to electrocute the fish. He said it was once popular in Florida, but does not exist anymore because farm-raised fish have taken away the market for the wildcaught fish. It was called monkey fishing because the person cranking the little motor and the person netting the fish would look like an organ grinder and his monkey. Lee’s book has stories of high speed boat chases as well s a time when his boat sank in the

Ocklawaha River and he floated on a gas can amid alligators. More enjoyable moments involved luring poachers with a robotic deer. “It was always fun watching a would-be Davy Crockett stalk one of these deer,” he said with a laugh. Today, wardens look at Facebook to find people posing with illegal catch. “It’s more effective than sitting out there for 500 hours waiting for a poacher,” he said. He said he always had an urge to write and published the book in 2013. He has since written another book to come out next spring, called “Bad Guys, Bullets and Boat Chases,” with true stories from other game wardens he collected around the state. He said he spent three years researching it. Currently, he’s working on a novel.

An officer noticed that there were straws on the dashboard, cut in a way normally used for narcotics. He could see white powder in a straw. The subject was searched prior to arrest and officers also found cut straws in his pockets. He admitted the straws contained a drug that he crushes and snorts. In plain view on the console was a controlled substance, and it was not in a prescription bottle. The officer asked the suspect about it, and he said a friend left it at work and he was meaning to give it back to him. Asked for the friend’s number so the story could be verified, the suspect said, “Don’t worry about it, no one will verify it.” The suspect had several previous narcotics charges. GUARDING FAMILY Adonis Boone became the ‘right guard’ for his family during Hurricane Matthew JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

H

e didn’t miss a game or even a single snap at practice. Few people would’ve known Mainland’s Adonis Boone and his family were forced to relocate from their new home after Hurricane Matthew’s high winds knocked large trees through their roof. Like most residents who didn’t evacuate, the Boone family hunkered down in their living room. They had lost power on Thursday, Oct. 6, the day before the storm struck. At one point Boone’s mother, Andra Gittens, went out to her car to charge her phone. While she sat in the car talking to relatives, Boone says he heard what sounded like a lingering thunder strike, and, after guarding his two brothers and baby sister on the floor, he looked up and a gigantic oak tree had crashed through the roof and inside the house. “It was the scariest moment of my life,” he said. “That whole day changed my mindset on life. After hearing my sister cry like she had been shot, I knew I had to stay strong throughout the entire situation for my family.” Before his mom and neighbors rushed inside to make sure everyone was OK, the tree shifted and fell on top of the family’s car, busting out the back windows. Fire Rescue took the family to Boone’s aunt’s house, where they waited out the hurricane. Boone refused to take any days

off. “I wanted to be there for my quarterback, my offensive line and running backs to help get the win against Matanzas,” he said. “But that situation humbled me and taught me that life can be taken from anyone at any time.” FAMILIAR WITH OBSTACLES

Boone has endured other hardships that helped him cope with what he’s going through. Going into his freshman season, he broke his femur and had to miss the last quarter of eighth grade in fear that he might snap his growth plate. This past summer, he suffered a hairline fracture and sprained MCL but remained on the field. “That’s when my coaches guaranteed my starting position, seeing me fight through those injuries,” he said. FOOTBALL FAMILY RESPONDS

When they heard what had happened to Boone’s home, Mainland’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Boone’s team prayed for him after every practice, and his coaches repeatedly asked if he needed anything or a place to stay, Boone said. “That really made me feel like this team is really like a family to me,” he said. “We treat each other like brothers, and the coaches treat us like we’re their sons. I honestly don’t know where I would find another program like Mainland’s.” Boone and his family are still awaiting a permanent residence.

Surrounding trees caved in Boone’s home just two weeks after his family moved in.

BUCS CRUISE IN SECOND ROUND PLAYOFF WIN The Class 6A top-ranked Bucs blew past the Sebastian River Sharks 36-7 Friday, Nov. 18, at Sebastian River. Senior C.J. Wilson ran for 90 yards and reached the end zone three times. Star quarterback Denzel Houston used his feet to cause most of his damage, running for two scores. Going into the game, Sebastian had only allowed four points per contest all season long. Mainland will host Miami Carol City Friday, Nov. 25, at Daytona Municipal Stadium.

love kids. They’re real. They often tell us what we don’t want to hear, and they expose a lot of our prejudices. As I was finishing up a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit under a pavilion during Flagler Baseball’s closing day games on Saturday morning, Karen Bullock, 4, sat directly across from me and sparked a conversation. After introducing herself, she introduced me to Valerie, her Barbie Doll. Karen went on to tell me of her family. She has two sisters; one’s allergic to chocolate, and the other lets her play with her toys. We also talked about my life. She asked if I was married, and I showed her a picture of my wife, Jessica. Karen said Jessica was pretty. Assuming I had other things to do, Karen’s dad, Harry, tossed her his phone and suggested she watch Disney on Netflix. But she had other plans. “Can I take your picture?” she asked me. Seldom do I, the “photographer,” get asked to have my picture taken — and never by a kid — so of course I said yes. Having already made my morning, Karen offered me some of her Little Debbie donuts and a sunflower seed. I didn’t want the calorie-filled donut, and I didn’t want to refuse everything she offered, so I took the seed. I saw she was eating the seeds whole, so I taught her how to crack the shell to get the inside. She said it tasted a lot better. When one of her dad’s friends stopped by to see her and asked what she was doing, she simply replied, “Just hanging out with Mr. Jeff.” She made me and baseball parent Abby Miller chuckle. In this country, we’ve been encouraged to use our differences to separate from one another. Karen is white; I’m black. She’s young; I’m old. Karen has a lot of hair; I’m bald. None of that, or our other differences, mattered to this little girl, and they didn’t seem to matter to her father, Harry, either. I was pleased that he’d allowed his daughter to befriend someone so different. If everyone in America acted like his 4-year-old, our country would be a much better place.

Abby Miller

Karen Bullock and I, hanging out.

Berkheimer Owner of rare muscle car prepares Ron has owned his 1956 Chrysler 300B for for Gaslight Parade and Car Show almost 40 years. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Ron Berkheimer has owned his 1956 Chrysler 300B for almost 40 years.

EVENING PARADE WILL AFFECT TRAFFIC Beachside drivers could experience delays on Nov. 25 as the city hosts the annual Birthplace of Speed Gas Light Parade. A portion of Riverside Drive, from East Granada Boulevard to

Casement Drive, will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the parade will start at East Granada Boulevard and Riverside Drive and go east on East Granada Boulevard. It will continue to South Atlantic Avenue, turn right, and proceed

south to Harvard Drive, where it will disperse. There may be extensive delays for traffic along the parade route, according to Ormond Beach Police Department. For questions or concerns, contact the OBPD Traffic Unit at 676-3550.

223185

Nearly 40 years ago, Ron Berkheimer was feeling down. He was going through a divorce, and went to a big antique car show to take his mind off of everything. That’s when he first laid eyes on the rare, 1956 Chrysler 300B. “I needed a therapy product,” he said, smiling. “Something to make me feel good.” And for the next 40 years, the car did just that. Only 1,102 of the 1956 300B models were produced. The value in Berkheimer’s, which he’s kept in good condition, has only increased over time, especially since it only has 39,000 miles on it. “I’m 99% sure it’s the lowest mileage and the most original 300B in the world,” he said. “I think there are only 125 still in existence.” Berkheimer is preparing the car in hopes of participating in the upcoming 59th annual Gaslight Parade and Birthplace of Speed Antique Car Show in Ormond Beach. Held on East Granada Boulevard Nov. 25, the parade begins at 7 p.m. at The Casements and travels down to A1A. The car show opens at 10 a.m. Nov. 26 at Fortunato Park and features cars from the 1920s to the 1960s.
