Over 30 people help clean up museum gardens COMMUNITY EDITOR

Over 30 people volunteered their time to the cleanup.

In just two hours, 35 local members of the community cleaned up over 100 cubic yards of debris from the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s gardens. That’s more than enough to fill one truck from FEMA. Hurricane Matthew left the

According to Patti and Donald Summerlin, there’s nothing quite like the power of the donut. “We’ll get people coming in all sluggish with their heads down, and then we’ll start to tell them about our banana pudding donut,” Patti Summerlin smiled, “then they perk up.” A longtime fantasy about opening up a breakfast place in Donald Summerlin’s beachside home-

town combined with the failed quest of finding a quality donut place led the couple to open Donnie’s Donuts just over a year ago on Seabreeze Boulevard in Daytona Beach. While they originally planned on using that as their satellite location and opening an additional store in Ormond Beach, Hurricane Matthew put those plans to a halt. Due to the damages their store suffered in the storm, the donut shop is making our city their home base. “When we were expanding, we asked people where they think we should go,” Patti Summerlin said. “The overwhelming response was

Ormond Beach.” The shop will hopefully open at its new location, 200 E. Granada Blvd., in the next six or seven weeks. Donnie’s Donuts offers a variety of daily flavors — like the popular maple bacon donut — to choose from, as well as fair-trade organic coffee. “We’re very sad to not be on Seabreeze,” Donald Summerlin said. “But we’re happy to be in Ormond, and committed to getting our shop open as soon as possible.” Follow the shop on Instagram and Facebook for updates on the store’s progress.

FEMA came last week to remove three truck loads of 40 trees, according to Janett Taylor, master gardener at the museum. indy Foote likes to take her three grandsons to Nova Skate Park at Nova Community Park, 440 N. Nova Road. “It’s safe,” she said. “And it’s pretty here by the park.” The safety of the park is something that city officials aimed for when they hired a company, Birdstown, of New Smyrna Beach, to run it, and city staff members say it’s been successful. It’s a controlled environment where younger kids are able to skate, City Manager Joyce Shanahan told city commissioners at an earlier meeting. And Leisure Services Director Robert Carolin agreed recently, saying the Birdstown staff mentor the youth. “I know. I’ve seen it,” he said. “Their heart is in it.” When it was unsupervised, there were fights and vandalism. But now, the City Commission face a decision at an upcoming meeting: Pay more to have the company run the park, run it with city staff or go back to unsupervised days. In 2015, Birdstown asked for and received a $900-per-month subsidy. This summer, the company said they needed to increase the amount to $250 per week, plus get the minimum hourly wage for an employee for up to 49 hours per week.

Carolin said the company had thought they could make money on equipment rentals, but most skaters have their own. Their other source for income is from concessions. There is no admission fee. The City Commission decided to send out a request for proposals in August to see if any other company would be interested in running the park. Birdstown is the only company that submitted a proposal, and it reflects the increase they requested. The Leisure Services Advisory Board met Nov. 9 to consider the RFP and voted to recommend that the city approve it. The final decision will be made by the City Commission at a future meeting. The total cost of the management fee and hourly wage for the city would be $33,766 per year. “It’s a lot of money,” Carolin told the Leisure Service Advisory Board. “But I’m passionate about helping kids and they are doing a really good job.” Carolin told the board that the staff hours are kept down by only opening it after school. It’s open 4-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Carolin told them if the city tried to run it with one full-time and one part-time person, it would cost more than the amount Birdstown requests. Birdstown also runs a skate park in New Smyrna Beach.

FREED Performing Arts, a Christian-based school, which will have its Winter Showcase at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Tomoka Christian Church, 1450 Hand Ave. All of their shows are free. The school is a nonprofit organization that teaches Bible lessons through the arts, including music, dancing, singing, acting, etc. Young people can sign up for classes at the event. The students work throughout the year toward their spring show, May 3 and 5, at the church. The Nov. 18 performance shows the techniques the students have learned since starting in September, and the May shows are full productions. “We spend eight months working on the spring show,” Lescarbeau said. One of last year’s spring shows was standing room only, she said. In addition to performing shows at Tomoka Christian Church, they also perform at schools or other locations. They are expanding to include guitar and percussion. Lescarbeau, who studied dance for 11 years, started the school in her home in 2000 when she saw a need for a faith-based performing arts school. She started with seven students, and there are now 80. As the school grew, her parents remodeled their garage into a studio. Later, there was a need for more space and she was invited to open her school at Tomoka Christian Church. “It’s something I’m so happy to be part of,” she said. She now has teachers in the different areas of the arts, after recruiting from throughout Volusia County. “I knew who the best teachers were,” she said. “It was a long pursuit but I ended up getting my choices. I felt God’s hand in it.” Call Lescarbeau at 589-6006, email Cindy@freedperformingarts.com or visit freedperformingarts.com.

Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Debbie Cotton and Dwight Selby and his wife, Sheryl, chat at the reception.

Littleton said being elected commissioner was the greatest honor he has received in his life. Selby said he was extremely humbled by the support he received from the community. “I realize that I have a lot to learn,” he said. Boehm said he is now the oldest member of the City Commission, now that Ed Kelley has gone to assume to role of County Chair. He said Kelley had big shoes to fill when he replaced former Mayor Fred Costello, and Partington has big shoes to fill in replacing Kelley, but he is sure Partington will do a great job. At a reception before the meeting, Harold Briley, who lost the race for Zone 4, said he plans to stay involved with the city and hopes to continue on the Ormond MainStreet Board and the Planning Board. “Wherever they need me, I’ll be there,” he said. He also wanted to thank all of his supporters in the race.

“A great two years is in store for the city of Ormond Beach.”

There was palpable excitement and high spirits as the new City Commission met for the first time in its organizational meeting Nov. 15. The nearly full chamber had many family members and friends, and each of the commissionBill Partington ers thanked them for their support over the years. The City Commission has been unchanged for the last three terms, a total of six years. Now, Bill Partington has moved into the mayor position, Dwight Selby is in the Zone 1 seat, and Rob Littleton represents Zone. 4. Returning are Troy Kent in Zone 2 and Rick Boehm in Zone 3. Mayor Partington pointed out that he, Kent and Boehm have a combined 32 years of experience on the commission. He said with the combination of experience and new ideas, Ormond Beach will be in “fantastic” shape. “I look forward to Commissioners Selby and Littleton providing a fresh look — a new approach and new ideas.” Kent, who was elected deputy mayor at the meeting, said change is always exciting. “A great two years is in store for the city of Ormond Beach,” he said.

A ride in one of Ormond Beach’s few Teslas My Corolla isn’t as cool as I’d thought.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Technology has always fascinated me — from a distance. I always loved playing with the latest gadgets at Best Buy and dreaming of one day being rich enough to own them and be able to pay someone to teach me how to properly use them. But for some reason, I’ve never been a huge fan of newer cars. I’d take an old, beat up yellow Jeep over a fancy new ride any day. Maybe my history of fender benders has subconsciously influenced this preference, or maybe I just know my limits. However, that all changed the moment I hopped into John Adams’ Telsa. After hearing through the grapevine (a.k.a Josh McPherson) that the general manager

Emily Blackwood

John Adams, of Adams, Cameron & Co. Realtors

of Adams, Cameron and Co., Realtors owned one of the few Teslas in Ormond Beach, I knew I had to use my title and influence to see it for myself — meaning I had Josh email him and ask if I could have a ride. Thankfully, he was down, and I met him over at his office in Daytona Beach to get a glimpse of just how poor I really am. Though Telsa wouldn’t tell Adams just how many other cars were in Ormond Beach, he said he knew of only three others — making the robot vehicle that more special. He said he wasn’t interested in getting the

car until he went to a conference last year, and realized just how revolutionary they really are. “It’s kind of like having an iPhone, and everyone else just has a flip phone,” he said. Walking out to the parking lot, I scanned to see if I could spot the revolutionary car in a sea of ordinary. I didn’t — until Adams said, “Watch this,” pressed a button on his key FOB and a car started to back itself out of parking space. I checked for the possibility of just a really short driver, but the seat was empty. In that moment, my

ORMOND BEACH

Observer

belief in ghosts and technology both rose. While we sat in the car and I tried not to break anything, Adams explained all the insane features of the robot car: a huge display (the size of iPads) that is basically your personal assistant, the total lack of buttons and the car’s ability to read traffic on the road in real time. Oh, and it also locks and unlocks itself when you approach. “When you walk away, it locks for you,” Adams said. “One time I was driving my wife’s car, and I just got out and walked away. She was like, ‘Are you just going to leave the car running?’” Though the car itself is insanely quiet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fast. I was going on about something when Adams decided to show off the car’s ability to get from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Now, I can’t tell if you that’s exactly how fast we went, but my stomach dropped enough to have me believe it was somewhere in that area. Joyride over, I tried to linger around the car as long as I could without it being weird. Eventually, I walked back to my boring old Corolla with a new goal in mind. Now I just need to ask for a raise.

Lady Green Wave shines in district debut

The Father Lopez Lady Green Wave introduced itself to 7A District-5 with a 68-20 season-opening win over the Seabreeze Sandcrabs on Monday, Nov. 14, at Seabreeze. The Green Wave transitioned from the highly talented 4A District-6, home of Highland Prep and Jones, two of Class 4A’s top teams. Lopez’s new district foes are Seabreeze, Pine Ridge, Mainland, Deltona, New Smyrna and Atlantic. After finishing with a 20-6 record last season, the Green Wave returns six players, including top players Madi Camporese and Lexi Duckett, who averaged 16 points last season as a freshman. “We’re expecting to compete for the district championship this year,” head coach Brad Ridenour said. “I know New Smyrna won the district and is really good, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.” Lopez will next play Holy Trinity on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Holy Trinity. The Sandcrabs will look to rebound against New Smyrna at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Seabreeze.

ome students hope to make quality grades in order to get to college next year. Then, there are student-athletes who strive to excel in a sport. They may even play a secondary sport to keep in shape for their best sport. Ormond local and Spruce Creek’s Erica Brok plays both volleyball and soccer, stands out in both and shines in the classroom. Brok recently signed her comErica Brok mitment letter to Florida Atlantic University, becoming Volusia County’s first Division I beach volleyball signee. Her resume in the sport shows she's worthy. She earned a starting position on the Lady Hawks volleyball team each of the past four seasons, leading the team to consecutive district titles and two Sweet 16 finishes in the last two years. Playing with her AAU and club team, Brok has won state, region and national championships, and was named to the 2015 Indoor Phenom Watch List. This past year, she was nominated as an American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour All-American. Brok first met FAU’s assistant coach Steve Grotowski — a former British beach volleyball player — at her very first beach volleyball tournament, when she was 13. He had just returned from playing in the 2012 Olympics for Britain. His wife Capri Grotowski serves as FAU’s head coach. In soccer, Brok has also started all four years. She was voted Most Valuable Player on the team last season, leading the Hawks to ditrict runner-up. She helped the team reach the Elite Eight in 2014. When she’s not on the court or the field, Brok is handling business in the classroom. She has a 4.57 weighted GPA and ranks 20th out of 578 students. Brok is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math), an AAU Academic All-American for the last three years and a Global Young Innovators Initiative nominee. Brok just kicked off her final season playing soccer with Spruce Creek, so she will be able to add to her already full resume before she takes the Division I sandlot for the Lady Owls.

BUCS ROUT OKEECHOBEE IN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

Jeff Beebe

The Mainland Buccaneers (10-0) blew out the Okeechobee Brahmans 56-7 in the first round of the playoffs Friday, Nov. 11, at Daytona Municipal Stadium. Quarterback Denzel Houston wasted no time getting the Bucs on the board, connecting with Nathaniel Dell for an 11-yard touchdown pass in less than 3 minutes. He would throw two others to D’Marcus Adams, one to Jason Colubiale and run another in. DeAndre McMillan found the end zone from five yards. Colubiale replaced Houston at quarterback, and he connected with D’Marcus Adams on a touchdown pass. Colubiale then ran in a score to cap off the night.

Local police enforcement paid a special visit to students at Grace Academy in Ormond Beach Nov. 10. No one was in trouble with the law, but everyone wanted to learn a little more about what it was like to be an officer. Students at the private school asked the 11 cops from the Ormond Beach, Bunnell and Flagler Beach police departments

questions like, “How do you use service dogs,” “What’s the worst crime you’ve ever fought,” and — more importantly — “Do you have light-up shoes like mine?” After a Q&A session, the students sang a song thanking the officers for their hard work, and parents gave them baked goods to take back to their stations. “We just wanted to show support for them and all that they do,” said Rebecca Myrick, Grace PSG events coordinator.

Mickels had a top made for the piano, and placed stools around it so it became a piano bar. Family photos show the top, which can be removed, filled with food for gatherings. Mickels was a professional musician in the area, performing at a nightspot called the Flame Lounge on Mason Avenue in the 1960s. “She had a beautiful voice,” her daughter said. What’s the next stop for the piano that’s been providing music in Ormond Beach for decades? Watkins can be reached at 4536070 or graf.cindyanne@hotmail.com.

A part of Ormond Beach history is looking for a home. A Steinway and Sons grand piano, model L, once filled the ballroom of the Ormond Hotel with music. Patricia Mickels, a pianist and singer, bought the piano in 1969, and it has remained in her beachside home all these years. She died Oct. 24 at the age of 86, after a lifetime of music, and her family now wishes to sell the piano. Did John D. Rockefeller, who died in 1937, once enjoy its music? It’s possible, because the piano was built in 1924. But the present owner does know how long it was in the historic hotel at the corner of East Granada Boulevard and John Anderson Drive, which opened in 1888 and was demolished in 1992. Just as the mahogany-finished piano likely livened up the hotel ballroom, it was the centerpiece for a lot of get-togethers through the years, according to Mickles’ daughter, Cindy Watkins. “She had wonderful parties at her house,” Watkins said. “I remember so many family dinners.”
