What was originally reported by the Ormond Beach Police Department as a potential scam, turned out to be just a miscommunication between two Uber drivers with the same first name. OBPD received a report that a person claiming to be an Uber driver approached a group of several women who were waiting for a ride outside The Grind. Though the driver gave the same name as the Uber they were waiting for (Ron), one of the women checked her Uber app and noticed that his vehicle information didn’t match. Almost immediately after, the driver shown on her Uber app pulled up, and they got in his car instead. The incident happened around midnight Sept. 9 but wasn’t reported until Sept. 11. Detectives found a confirmed Uber driver named Ron, who drives a car that matched the description provided by the women. He told police that he received a ride request at The Grind at the date and time in question. When he arrived, he saw several women who appeared to be waiting for a ride. He asked them if they requested Uber. One of them replied, “Yes, are you, Ron?” He said that he was. At that point another vehicle arrived, possibly a Kia Soul, with its driver also asking people nearby if they called Uber. The women got into the Kia and drove off. Ron then drove around the block a few times to see if anyone else may have called him. He

eventually left the area with no fare. He provided detectives with a screen shot from his Uber account that showed he had a cancelled ride for that time and location, consistent with his account. The incident was originally reported as suspicious, but police now say no crime was committed. The incident was reported to Uber.

Suspicious truck incident solved The report of a pickup truck that tore up and down a city street in front of schoolchildren turned out to be a false alarm, police have now reported. Last week, a neighbor reported that schoolchildren were alarmed when a pickup truck came toward them a couple of times at a high rate of speed and then slowed down as it went by them. They ran into a neighbor’s yard and told the resident about the incident. The resident recently told police that she believes the children were truly scared, but she doesn’t think the truck driver was paying any attention to them. A truck that matched the description was located in the area, Live Oak Avenue and South Ridgewood Avenue, by police. The truck owner admitted to driving the truck at the time and said he was revving the engine and speeding up and slowing down. He said he does that once a month to clean the carbon out. He denied that he stared at the students as he went by.

Perego stands in front of his mural at Kona Tiki Bar. The bridge is the Granada Bridge.

PAINTING THE TOWN The nationally known artist has painted several murals in the city. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

T

he artist arrived for the interview, his long hair combed straight back. The bottom half of his goatee was pink. Flecks of paint on his clothes showed Perego was taking time out from a workday to talk about his art and his vision, which have left vibrant, colorful strokes on the world, and most recently Ormond Beach. He has a formed a worldwide Art Army and is known for his memorable performances. Perego’s creativity can be seen in the murals at the Kona Tiki Bar, done in a retro, 1950s style; the portraits of historic figures in Rose Villa Restaurant; and the mural in 31 Supperclub that evokes the 1930s. His art ranges from the fanciful and wild to portraits that look like they could have been painted 100 years ago.

“After 28 years, I’ve done every style,” he said. Most recently, he painted a mural at Osceola Elementary School, which shows local history with elements of the Ormond Garage, The Casements and the school mascot, Chief Osceola. The project started one day when he was dropping off his daughter at the school and noticed art on the campus was faded. He offered his services, and the paint was donated by Southern Paint. City Commissioner Bill Partington was at the dedication ceremony for the mural. “This guy is an amazing artist,” Partington said recently. “He does beautiful work.” Partington mentioned the mural that Perego has done in DeLand, at Rich Avenue and Woodland Avenue, and remarked how murals create interest. Perego believes in public art. “When you look at art, the energy impacts you,” he said. “Art makes people feel good. Art is not passive, it’s aggressive. It’s more powerful than you think.” ASKED TO DO “CRAZY THINGS”

Scott Smith, general manager of Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar, calls the murals “fabulous” and “eye-catching.” When people are new to the restaurant, he points out all the

art to make sure they don’t miss anything. Perego, 49, enjoys the challenge of commercial art, using his craft to accomplish the goals of the business owner. “I’m asked to do a variety of crazy things,” he said. “I have to figure how to do them as art.” His artwork around the area includes the parking garage in Daytona Beach, murals in the Bruce Rossmeyer’s HarleyDavidson and many more. Perego also uses his artistic vision in interior design. He settled in the Daytona Beach area in 1992, after working around the country, and helped design The Coliseum, The Love Bar, The Groove Nightclub and others. Working as art director for Walt Disney World, he helped launch the Disney Cruise Line Inaugural Event in Cape Canaveral, the Animal Kingdom press event and the premier party for Cirque du Soliel in Orlando. On television, his set designs can be seen on Univision, BET and the local PBS. “They say I think ‘outside the box.’ I think I’m just a freak,” he said, laughing. He also did artwork for the recently released volume three of “Zorro: The Complete Adventures” by Johnston McCulley and published by Bold Venture Press of Sunrise, Florida. EVERYONE’S AN ARTIST

In high school, in the Philadelphia area, friends helped him with his

art, and this was the genesis of the Art Army, a collaboration with other artists in 45 cities worldwide, each with a Facebook page. “It’s a brotherhood of artists who believe in changing the world through art and music,” he said. He wants to bring a “oneness” to the world with the Art Army. “I’ve heard people say, ‘your God,’ and ‘my God,” he said. “What are they talking about? There’s only one God” Perego believes that everyone is an artist; everyone is creative. “Our oneness is through our diversity,” he said. “Not oneness through sameness.” PERFORMANCE ART

Performance art is a big part of Perego’s life these days. During the economic downturn, he said many of his friends in the art business had to get other jobs, but he found a way to continue with performances.

This mural is in the Kona Tiki Bar.

His shows are memorable events for the audience, who often take part. “I do things people will always remember,” he said. For example, they are invited to come on stage and pour paint over his head, so he can sign his art by slamming his hair onto the canvas. Sometimes the event will end with setting the art on fire. He promises an unforgettable experience that will “surpass you expectations and maybe even blow your mind.” His next performance art will be at The Roof at the Daytona Beach Pier, on the Thursday and Saturday of Biketoberfest. It will be a busy weekend for him, as he is performing in Philadelphia on that Friday night.

Ormond Beach City, residents prepare for

Hurricane Matthew It's time to batten down the hatches. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

CASSEN PARK Cassen Park is a 3.7 acre riverfront park located along the Halifax River at the southwest corner of the Granada Bridge. A bait shop, boat docks, a fishing pier stretching under the Granada Bridge, cleaning stations, and ample parking are all available on site. Picnic tables and grills are also available.

Open from 5:00 AM until Midnight

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

With Hurricane Matthew expected to hit Florida’s East Coast late Thursday evening, local residents are preparing to face the oncoming storm. Broker and owner of NewEdge Realty Ralph Padgett Jr. has weathered hurricanes before, including Hurricane Andrew and the hurricane season of 2004. Both times, his houses on beachside were damaged beyond repair. “When Hurricane Andrew hit, we were in Miami with a house on an island,” he said. “It flooded, and there were two feet of water in the house for about a week. I lived in another house on the coast in New Smyrna Beach, and in 2004 the roof blew off and went two blocks away.” Though officials are still unsure whether Matthew will make a direct hit locally, the message of caution is this: Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. “Everybody needs to have food, water, batteries, candles and ice on standby,” said Pub-

lic Works Operations Manager Kevin Gray. “We don’t want to take this lightly. We haven’t been through it in a while, but we don’t want to go through it without.” No evacuation orders have been made, but Gray says if they are, listen. “We have a lot of old Floridians that don’t want to leave,” he said. “But if you don’t go, we can’t get to you. The city, county and DOT will close the bridge at sustained winds of 45mph. After that, the only thing we can do is say sorry.” Padgett, who currently owns three houses in Ormond on the beach, is preparing to board up some windows and test the high-impact windows some of his houses have. “We’ll see if they meet the test,” he said. “All you can do is batten down the hatches, know where your loved ones will be, have your insurance papers in hand and hope for the best. You can’t control mother nature.” STATE OF EMERGENCY

A State of Emergency has been declared by Gov. Rick Scott for the state of Florida, and a hurricane watch is currently in effect for inland Volusia County. A hurricane watch is typically issued 48 hours before

the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds. Hurricane conditions are possible in Florida by late Thursday, with tropical storm conditions possible by early Thursday. According to the National Weather Service, the storm is slow moving, and the track has shifted more to the west. Hurricane Matthew will pass Volusia County closer than originally anticipated. Volusia County is expected to receive 4-6 inches of rain, beach erosion and sustained winds of 35-45 mph — and possibly higher — beginning late Thursday night. I’m 24 years old, i.e., no longer a baby Does this mean I have to do laundry on a regular basis?

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

“You know we’re almost out of our mid-20s right?” Lauren always was really good at pep talks. It was Saturday, and I officially had the birthday blues. The parties were over, the gifts were unwrapped and I had already

eaten the pumpkin cupcakes Madeline had got me. “I know,” I said with a slight attitude. “This is the first birthday where somebody didn’t say, ‘OMG, you’re such a baby!’” It was back to cold, harsh reality. No more celebrating the fact that I was getting older — I was just older. Lauren and I tried to lighten the mood and plan out my quarter-life crisis (heads up, I’m probably dying my hair pink and joining a reggae band), but the weight of the conversation stayed with me the whole day. I’m 24, and that number is only going to get higher. But for me, it’s never been the age I worry about, but how I might change with it. There’s a lot of adult stuff

on my daily agenda, and I’m somehow surviving despite being the sole caretaker of myself, a cat and a fish whose bowl I can’t stop breaking. I work a full-time job and a part-time job. I play second base in an adult softball league — which is something I vividly remember making fun of my dad for doing. But even though I’m more grown up than I’ve ever been, a lot of people still see me as a kid. And I kind of hope that never changes. Kids find joy everywhere. They do things before thinking and well before they’re ready. They make decisions based on how much fun they’re going to have. They love without restraint and live without limitations. BRIEFS

The City Commission approved a traffic control agreement at their Sept. 20 meeting for Destination Daytona Lane, a private road located in the Destination Daytona complex at North U.S. 1 and Interstate 95. The Ormond Beach Police Dept. has been contacted by the complex owners in the past, regarding speeding and parking complaints. For example, semi-trucks sometimes park on the road, blocking traffic. Florida statutes allow a city to take jurisdiction over a private road, if the city and private company agree.

She said they were opening the doors of her car when she walked out onto the screened-in porch. They then ran and got into a car, which sped down the street in reverse. The suspects had opened the doors of both vehicles in the witness’s driveway. The officer found a baseball cap between the vehicles. There was a car break-in reported on a nearby street.

Real boys play in

e’re halfway done with this football season, and most of the analysis for these teams closely resemble their assessments from last year at this time. Visit last year’s posts to see the similarities. MAINLAND (6-0): A+. It’s scary to think Mainland may have gotten better since last season. Denzel Houston and the offense have been unstoppable, and the defense has become as stingy as it’s ever been. Special teams also lend a hand in putting points on the board. This team is on a war path to reach the Class 6A title game this year. MATANZAS (5-0): A+. Can I get an encore? Where did that losing-season Matanzas team go that all the other schools loved to play? The Pirates have only lost two games in their last 15 tries, and that number will stay low. With a balanced offense and maybe an even better defense than last season, Matanzas is thinking playoffs again. They’re playing lights-out football. FLAGLER PALM COAST (1-4): C-. Your record is a clear indica-

ith the arrival of October, sports teams will take part in supporting the fight against breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Most football players will wear pink cleats, arm bands, socks and other accessories, but the Ormond Beach Sandcrabs took it further by wearing pink jerseys. "It's the second year we've done it, and a lot of us have lost family members to cancer or are currently fighting the fight," said Brandon Campbell, the Sandcrabs' president. "We support the families and anyone going through it, and we try to teach the boys the actual issues, not just for the pink colors." The cheerleaders also took part, wearing pink shirts that read on the back: "Ormond supports the fight." — JEFF DAWSEY

tion of what you are, right? Did you know that FPC’s four losses came by way of teams ranked 16th or better in the state in their respective classes? Those teams have a combined 20-2 record, giving the Bulldogs one of the toughest strength of schedules in the entire state. Yes, the Bulldogs have many shortcomings, but most teams would lose those same games. The rest of their schedule isn’t nearly as tough. FATHER LOPEZ CATHOLIC (1-3): D. The Green Wave has been

disappointing. Lopez can’t stop anyone this season. Opposing teams are averaging 41 points against the Green Wave, and what should be a pretty good offense has scored over 20 points in only one game thus far. This is quarterback Josh Spencer’s and wide receiver Ryan Atkins’ last year, so this may be the best opportunity to win anything for the Green Wave. They’re going to have to play a lot better, through, the next half-season. SEABREEZE (1-5): D. The Sandcrabs should be better than what they’re putting forth. This isn’t a knock on their defense or special teams, which have scored more points than the offense. Through six games, Seabreeze’s offense has scored two touchdowns. The wildcat formation seems to be the only lifeline on the offense, but it makes temporary appearances behind the Sandcrabs’ conventional offense. Until the offenses change places, I don’t expect anything more from this team.

SIDELINES

Loynd sparks Sandcrabs in their first win Just as last season, the Seabreeze Sandcrabs have earned their first win of the season by beating the Pine Ridge Panthers 20-6 Friday, Sept. 30, at Pine Ridge. After the Sandcrabs fell behind 6-0 early in the game, Brody Loynd replaced a struggling Brevin Glaze and altered the game’s momentum with a couple of first-down runs. After forcing the Panthers to punt on their first possession of the second half, the Sandcrabs’ defense blocked the punt, and Amarri Davis scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Noah Motto’s extra point gave Seabreeze the lead at 7-6. Later Loynd broke for an 81yard gain to put the Sandcrabs inside the 10-yard line, and he

would then call his number again and score from seven yards out. Motto added another extra point. The special teams put up another score, when Deshawn Hugee returned a punt 80 yards to the house. Motto added another point with his field goal. Although Loynd seems to be the offensive playmaker for the Sandcrabs, Coke confirmed that Glaze will still start at quarterback going forward, while Loynd will have a designed package.

It’s a joy. It’s all about the swimmers, and I’ve been blessed to work with some of the best”

My overall season record: 20-3 These games are scheduled for Friday, but the hurricane could change that ...

Mainland (6-0) at Cocoa: Mainland wins 40-39. The Bucs have yet to play a team of this caliber this season. Mainland will visit the Tigers in their home stadium, where they have beaten their last 18 opponents. No one has been able to stop Denzel Houston and company this season, and the Bucs’ defense has only allowed teams to stay close for a short time. While this game will go down to the wire, Mainland will make the right moves and snap Cocoa’s home winning streak while continuing its undefeated season.

Homecoming winners This past week, Mainland blew out the Deltona Wolves 35-0 for its homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 30, at Daytona Municipal Stadium. Houston excited the crowd with 40- and 95-yard touchdown runs and a couple of touchdown passes to Jason Colubiale. The defense added the other score, when Roman Mack returned a fumble for a touchdown. Noah Gettman added all of the extra points.

Seabreeze (1-5) at Atlantic: Atlantic wins 31-7. Can the Sandcrabs find more points? After being held to seven points or less in their first five contests, the Sandcrabs scored 20 against Pine Ridge – a bad team. Atlantic is a different story, and the Sharks will create havoc on offense and defense to thwart Seabreeze’s confidence.

Flagler Palm Coast (1-4) vs. Palatka: Palatka wins 24-16. The Bulldogs will now face another tough but winnable foe in the Panthers. Stymied by its previous opponent Sandalwood 34-6, FPC should be able to perform a lot better than last Friday, but the Panthers’ dual quarterback will give them fits. Byrd will rebound from his 50 yards, but it won’t be enough to overcome the Panthers.

Father Lopez (2-3) at Interlachen: This game has been canceled, due to the incoming hurricane and will not be rescheduled.

Thankfully, they were mock scenarios in the annual meeting of state Explorer programs, hosted by Ormond Beach Police Explorers and the school. Police Explorers is a program that gives young people age 14-21 the chance to explore a career in law enforcement by working with

a law enforcement agency. The Ormond Beach advisor is Officer Lauran Sanders, who said OBPD and Kaiser also co-hosted the event eight years ago. Other situations faced by the 200 Explorers from around the state involved issues of homelessness, parental custody and mental illness. They were tested on their knowledge of police work, assessment of the situation and decision making. However, the instructor told them they should have done something with the two knives that were lying on a table before they started the interviews. There were also demonstrations and lectures. A drug enforcement officer gave tips on how to dress and act when going undercover and showed a video of a police sting. The Explorers also learned how to lift fingerprints and heard a detective talk about the importance of having a mentor. THE STUDENTS’ VIEW

IT HAPPENS!

“It’s fun. I enjoy it,” said Explorer Dakota Bejo, about Explorers. He plans to go to a police academy

and eventually work as a deputy for Volusia County. He said he’s drawn to police work because it’s not routine, with something different every day. But some explorers are not pursuing a career as a police officer, such as Amber Hergert who plans to be registered nurse. “It’s a great experience,” she said. “We learn what police go through.” The organization also provides an opportunity to learn if law enforcement is a career they want to pursue. Amber’s sister, Brooke, said when she was young she wanted to be an officer, but now had decided it’s not for her. Kirsten Scherer, the Explorer chief, said it’s an opportunity to see both sides of a situation, from the citizen and the officer. She also enjoys going on police ridealongs.

GIVING BACK

Sanders was an Explorer as a teenager. “I went to a meeting and fell in love with it,” she said. “You learn something new every day and it’s like a family.” Also, she said, she received valuable mentorship when she was an Explorer, and she wants to give back and be a good mentor herself. Faculty, graduates, and student volunteers from Keiser University’s criminal justice, crime scene technology and medical assisting degree programs partnered with high school students as volunteers in the scenarios. The scenarios were led and judged by law enforcement from throughout Volusia County. For information about Explorers, call OBPD at 677-0731 and ask for Officer Sanders or email Lauren.sanders@ormondbeach.org.

GOLDEN Debbie Doster’s class

Debbie Doster’s class recently won an award from the Florida Department of Agriculture for their garden project. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

“I’d like to mix a strawberry and an orange together,” Tristan Small said over his large-rimmed glasses. “I wonder how that would taste.” The 12-year-old’s love for gardening is shared by his classmates at David C. Hinson Sr. Middle School — so much so, in fact, that they were recognized by the Florida Department of Agriculture with a Golden Shovel Award for having the best-revitalized garden in the state. “When the school first opened, there was a butterfly garden in memory of David Hinson,” said their teacher, Debbie Doster. “After 12 years, it went into disrepair. Kids who weren’t mobile couldn’t get out there. Gardening is such a wonderful teaching tool. Everyone should have access to it.” So this past year Doster, an exceptional student education teacher, took it upon herself to make a change. With the help of the school’s staff and additional funding, a new wheelchairaccessible garden was created. They have garden boxes for each student, a warm farm to make their fertilizer and even hydroponic plants to teach them how to grow things without soil. “I like planting things and seeing if it will all grow,” Smalls said. “My favorite is the eggplant. It comes from a little flower.”

Austin Rutherford, 13, and Tristan Small, 12, are two of the many students who have taken a big interest in the school's garden.
