YOUR TOWN KYLIE TRUAX’S MOM AND SISTER ATTEND CONCERT IN HER HONOR

Kylie Truax’s family will always remember her love of singing — espcially songs by Meghan Trainor. Her mother, Stacie Truax, and her sister, Cheyenne Cannon, honored the 14-year-old’s memory by attending Trainor’s concert in Orlando Sept. 18. They made signs — which were autographed by the singer after the concert — and listened to her sing all of Kylie’s favorites. Kylie Truax died Aug. 3 from an unexpected blood infection.

MILSAP BEACH RAMP IS NOW CLOSED DURING THE WEEK Volusia County’s Coastal Division recently initiated its off-season vehicle beach access ramp schedule. Effective Sept. 6, Milsap Road beach ramp in Ormond Beach is open only on weekends. “As the season winds down, fewer tourists and residents frequent the beaches,” said Jessica Winterwerp, director of the county’s coastal division. “After the peak of the season, we reduce the number of vehicle beach access ramps to reduce operating costs. ... The offseason schedule will result in a cost savings of an estimated $186,303 to the county’s general fund.” While some ramps are closed to vehicles, access is always open for pedestrians and bicyclists. There are 13 vehicle access ramps in the county that are open year-round. For a complete listing of beach access ramps, visit volusia.org/beach.

Ormond Beach resident Rob Burley and his 7-year-old son, Ryan Burley, participated in the International Coastal Cleanup at Sanchez Park.

ORMOND RESIDENTS PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP Volusia County Environmental Management rounded up volunteers for the annual International Coastal Cleanup Sept. 17. There were six locations in Ormond Beach where volunteers could sign up to pick up trash. They included:

Bicentennial Park, Tom Renick Park, Birthplace of Speed Park, Andy Romano Beachfront Park, Sanchez Park and Cassen Park. Ormond Beach residents Rob Burley and his son, Ryan Burley, 7, were just a few of the many locals who participated in the cleanup at Sanchez Park. They picked up 6.8 pounds of garbage, mostly bottles and cans.

One of Colin Gray’s first memories of Family Renew was painting the doors of the organization’s then-new facility in Holly Hill. Over two decades later, the facility isn’t so new anymore. Gray’s grandfather, Tom Ritzi, was one of the founding members of the organization, which has supported homeless families with children in Volusia County for 27 years. “My grandfather passed away two years ago,” Gray said. “When he did, I felt it was important to get back involved with Family Renew to carry on his legacy.” Ritzi, like Gray, was an Ormond Beach resident who was very involved in the community.

His grandson described him as a serial entrepreneur who always had the best stories. “We were very close,” Gray said. “You could sit down and listen to him talk for hours.” Family Renew has served about 1,500 families since its creation, giving them support and transitional housing with the goal of transitioning them to permanent housing and selfsufficiency.

While there is currently some construction on West Granada Boulevard, officials say most of the attention on downtown will be on the surrounding streets.

Expanding the Heart D of Ormond

The movers and shakers of Ormond Beach are talking future plans for downtown — and what’s on their personal wish lists. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

RIC GOSS, CITY PLANNER FOR THE CITY

WHAT CHANGES DO YOU SEE COMING TO DOWNTOWN IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? “As we move away from the downtown center, we’re looking for more residential buildings mixed with commercial. And that’s going to be on the side streets. We need more rooftops, more people in the downtown. We already see what restaurants can do. They’re doing their job, and we need to get more people to create more attractions. Get people to downtown. Get stores to start opening up their shops later. I think right now the downtown isn’t positioned to take advantage of the younger people. They like being closer to where the action is.” WHAT’S ON YOUR WISH LIST FOR DOWNTOWN? “I would like to see new development replacing the older development with buildings three, four or five stories high. I’d like to start seeing what we would call work-

live type of arrangements, where people open up a shop downstairs and live upstairs. I would like to see less private parking, because private parkings means at the end of the day, you can’t use it. And something needs to be done with the sidewalks, but I’m not sure what.” TROY KENT, CITY COMMISSIONER FOR ZONE 2

ings with residential, shopping, business and dining all mixed together in two- or three-story buildings. We really need a place where people don’t have to drive all day or all week if they don’t want to. I’d like it to be more of a livable, walkable community. I would also be happy to see a small marina underneath the Granada Bridge, and I think the dock we’re going to get is going to help with some of that.” SEE JULIA TRUILO’S VIEWS ON DOWNTOWN ON PAGE 4

WHY IS INVESTING IN DOWNTOWN SO IMPORTANT? “I think the downtown in many communities — especially in Ormond — is the heart of your city. In our downtown, from a stone’s throw away, you have City Hall, a public library, our Intracoastal Waterway and our main downtown area. I don’t know of any other community that is fortunate enough to have that all together.” WHAT’S ON YOUR WISH LIST FOR DOWNTOWN? “My big wish list for the future is that we will have mix-use build-

owntown areas are often referred to as the heart of their communities. But what does it take to keep a heart pumping? Sure, we could come up with a recipe that includes things like unique businesses, good parking, fun events and clean landscaping. But for a downtown to really come alive, it needs people. In the past 10-15 years, downtown Ormond Beach has undergone quite the transformation. It used to be impossible for tourists — and even some residents — to figure out exactly where the downtown was. Now on any given Thursday night, it’s impossible to find a good parking spot. This metamorphosis didn’t happen overnight. It took a large group of people with a similar vision and a lot of dedication to make it a reality. The Ormond Beach Observer spoke with a few of those movers and shakers recently to see what they’re dreaming up for next five years.

City officials plan to focus on the infrastructure on streets like New Britain Avenue to encourage more business and residential redevelopment.

DOWNTOWN FROM PAGE 3

JULIA TRUILO, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ORMOND MAINSTREET

THE CASEMENTS

WHAT PROJECTS FOR DOWNTOWN DOES MAINSTREET HAVE IN THE WORKS? “We’re excited about the dock project and the improvements to Cassen Park. The city should be upgrading the bathrooms this year, and the following year the plan is to upgrade the parking lot. Our goal is to make that park more of a destination point — a place not only where we’re welcoming the boaters, but where we might find more activities for residents. I don’t think it’s being used as much as it could. Whether it’s an interactive art project or more comfortable places to sit, we don’t know, but we’re going to focus on incorporating more activities into that side of the bridge. “We also want to continue with the street paving and the improvements to the core district, and expand those improvements to the east side of the bridge. We want to grow the energy in the central part of the district to the other parts, like making the east side of the river more pedestrian

The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive, is a 9,000 square-foot historical home, once the winter home of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., and is listed on the National Register of historic places. It has been the Cultural Center for the community for the past 30 years. The Casements Guild volunteers provide daily tours (Monday-Friday 10 AM - 3:30 PM; Saturday 10-11:30 AM) and operate a gift shop. Large group tours by appointment only (386-6157009). The home has many rooms that are used for various classes (dance, art, exercise) and a kitchen used for cooking classes. The facility can be rented for weddings, socials, memorials, business meetings and seminars.

friendly — anything to give it more personality. We want to continue the economic development projects and take a look at what is available in terms of empty spaces. “There’s also going to be new life on New Britain. We’re helping to shape that, and looking at new ways to help our current downtown businesses grow. We have also succeeded in making the Ormond Beach Arts District a 501(c)(3), which means we’ll be going forward with public art displays, and working with the city to see the various ways we can incorporate art into downtown.” WHAT’S ON YOUR WISH LIST FOR DOWNTOWN? “I would like to see a boutique hotel that had sufficient meeting space so we could stop taking our meetings to other cities.”

THE CITY’S FIVE YEAR PLAN: According to City Planner Ric Goss, residents can expect to see big changes in the infrastructure of downtown in the very near future. By making an effort to maximize land use, they hope to give businesses opportunities to increase their activity. The following changes are currently in the works:  Storm water improvements, including eliminating all the little holes and retention ponds on downtown parcels  Boat dock and new bathrooms in Cassen Park  More public parking lots  More attention to the back streets — such as New Britain Avenue and Tomoka Avenue — rather than West Granada Boulevard Current public parking lots in downtown Commissioner Troy Kent said some residents are unaware of the city’s current parking availability:  City Hall/library parking lot  Parking lot next to the Mainstreet building  Ormond Beach Elementary School parking lot from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Patients at the oncology center at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center got a cool and refreshing treat Sept. 19: Schmancy Pops, courtesy of Patient Appreciation Day. “It tastes good going down,” said Robert Umberger, of Ormond Beach, who said he is halfway through his radiation treatments for vocal cord cancer. He said his throat is sore, and so he enjoys ice cream and frozen ice lollies. Howard Waddle, also of Ormond Beach, said the frozen treats were “wonderful” and were a pleasant surprise while there for a radiation treatment. Patient Appreciation Day was a result of a partnership between Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center and Joseph Cofer, the young entrepreneur who owns Schmancy Pops. Patients and their caregivers who visited the hospital’s oncology center for treatment were invited to choose a pop in their favorite flavor. Joseph reached out to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in April, asking if he could donate pops to the oncology patients. Florida Hospital agreed to the request and matched Schmancy Pops’ donation, paying for half of

the frozen pops for Patient Appreciation Day. Kristie Reiner, director of oncology operations, said that cancer patients go through a difficult time, so they wanted to give them a treat. “It’s refreshing and it’s summer time,” she said. “It’s a good way to fulfill our mission … to extend the healing ministry of Christ.” Shannon Finley, director of public relations at the hospital, also enjoyed a key lime pie pop. She’s also a patient, having gone through surgeries the past year for thyroid cancer. She is currently undergoing therapy. Enjoying her treat at 8:30 a.m., she said, “It’s the breakfast of champions,” pointing out with a smile that it has both dairy and fruit. Schmancy Pops are all-natural and made with fresh fruits.

DECIDING ON THE NEXT BIG STEP

Joseph started the company in 2014 when he was 11 years old as a way to save money for a car, but it has grown into something larger. The family has been making pops by hand in their home every night, but recently bought a pop maker that cranks out 250 an hour. “It will definitely improve our quality of life,” said Joseph’s mother, Kellie Cofer. They started selling at events, and now sell at a variety of locations such as baby showers, swim meets and school athletic events. Several retail locations have expressed interest in selling the pops, and Kellie Cofer said they are deciding what their next step will be. They are considering a warehouse where they can make the frozen treats and are even think-

ing about opening their own retail store. “We’re just going to see where the journey takes us,” she said. Before they made the decision to purchase the pop maker, she said, the family had a conversation and asked Joseph if he wanted to see the business grow or slow down, and he said he wants to see it grow. Joseph’s dad, Joe, also said the experience has been positive. “It’s a blast,” he said. “We’re working together as a family, and he is learning so much.” Joseph, an honor student at Ormond Middle School, is on the Daytona Speed swim team and just earned a black belt in karate. “He has to have time to be a kid,” Kellie Cofer said.

Nothing brings people together quite like crafting

People complimented my skills. Strangers asked to try it on. It was nothing short of a miracle.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

My history with crafting is kind of a mixed bag. But thankfully, where my artistic abilities are lacking, I have creative friends and family to help me out. And by help me out, I usually mean just do it for me and let me take

partial credit. While I’ve had paintings, birthday cards and Halloween costumes made in my name, this past Friday I created something worth Snapchatting all on my own: a flower crown. Led by the fabulous Ormond Memorial Art Museum duo Kristin Heron and Melissa Frankel, the “Full Moon Magic: Harvest Queen Autumnal Crowns” class was exactly what I needed to fuel my artistic ego. So if you saw me out Friday night, and I was acting super smug — mostly because I made something really cool that I

was proud of, and because I made my mom a little jealous — you have them to blame. Using a vine handpicked from the museum’s garden by Master Gardener Janett Taylor, I somehow managed to make a crown that fit my oddly shaped head on the first try. I know, I’m just as surprised as you. I, along with the rest of the sold-out class, chose what to decorate the crowns with from a huge, colorful selection of flowers, butterflies, feathers and leaves. It was one of those rare moments in adulthood where you felt happy and 12. While talking with all the

cool ladies at my table — and pretending that I wasn’t constantly burning my fingers with the glue gun — I somehow managed to arrange my flowers in a way that didn’t make me want to immediately trash it and start over. People complimented my skills, and strangers asked to try it on: It was nothing short of a miracle. That, or the magic of the full moon. So, if you’re interested in putting your crafting skills to the test, visit ormondartmuseum.org to register for upcoming classes.

Though the Song of the Coast Chorus typically has older members, most stop singing around the age of 80, according to President Mary Ellen Stanchfield. But baritone Pat Tugas recently celebrated her 89th birthday with her Sweet Adelines crew — and her voice isn’t going anywhere. “The aging voice usually isn’t the most pleasant to listen to,” Stanchfield said. “But she still sings beautifully.” A Sweet Adeline since 1995, Tugas has made a family of friends among her chorus crowd. “I think she’s gracious in her maturity,” Stanchfield said. “She’s the epitome of aging gracefully, and never letting her age get in the way. She gets up in the morning, and she has a purpose.” In honor of her birthday, the chorus threw her a party Sept. 19, and instead of presents, Tugas asked everyone to bring jars of peanut butter and jelly to donate to Halifax Urban Ministries.

Gold’s Gym urges members to keep valuables out of car after string of break-ins Gold’s Gym recently posted on their Facebook page that there have been a string of vehicle break-ins in the parking lot of their parking lot. The Ormond Beach Police Department is aware of the situation and increasing their patrol in that area. Police urge people to never leave valuables in their cars and to report any suspicious activity. Building impact fees raised The City Commission approved, in a first reading, an adjustment to water and sewer impact fees. A second vote will be necessary for final approval of the ordinance. Water and sewer impact fees have been adjusted annually since October 2008 to reflect the change in the Engineering News Record Construction Cost Index. The increase for 2016 is 2.88%. Water impact fees for residential units will be adjusted from $2,543 to $2,616 and sewer impact fees will be adjusted from $2,477 to $2,548. The adjustment is expected to generate an additional $20,000 for the water and sewer impact fee funds. The fees for nonresidential, commercial and industrial uses will be based on the number of equivalent living units computed by the chief building official using the fixture unit count. The fees will be effective Oct. 1.

W

hen Thursday night’s “holy war” concluded, head football coach Matt Knauss found one of his players and rejoiced with a jump-up celebration. Father Lopez (1-2) came from behind to beat arch rival Warner Christian Academy 41-35 on Sept. 15, at Warner, giving Knauss his first head coaching win. “It was definitely one we had to work for,” Knauss said. “Having to get a touchdown in the last few minutes of both halves with one timeout made it a daunting task.” The Green Wave trailed 19-7 in the second quarter, but quarterback Josh Spencer called his own number and went 46 yards untouched into the end zone. The extra point made it 19-14. With a little over a minute remaining in the half, Warner scored again and converted its two-point attempt, but the Green Wave quickly marched down field, and Spencer hit Ryan Atkins in the corner of the end zone to go into the half trailing 27-21. Coming out of the half, Green Wave’s Elijah Rone took over. He scored the game’s tying touchdown from a yard out, but Lopez missed its only extra point attempt, making the score 27-27. After stopping Warner on their next drive, Lopez drove back down the field, and Rone scored his second touchdown from eight yards to put the Green Wave up 34-27.

RUNNING WILD:

Elijah Rone rushed for over 100 yards with three touchdowns, and Jacob Porto also ran over 100 yards. Josh Spencer had nearly 100 rushing and passing yards, also adding two passing scores and a running touchdown.

“This game will teach them not to give up, no matter what happens,” MATT KNAUSS, head football coach

Jacob Porto gave the Green Wave its first energetic play by breaking a 35-yard run that led to a touchdown.

With less than two minutes remaining, Warner scored and converted a two-point conversion, which put them up 35-34 with 1:24 left to play. On third-and-25, with a minute remaining, Spencer saved the game and ran all across the

field for about 30 yards and a first down. Rone would eventually punch it in from 10 yards out for the go-ahead score that allowed Lopez to win 41-35. “This game will teach them not to give up, no matter what happens,” Knauss said.

grandchildren a lifetime, while some great players – no matter how popular they may be – never reap a dime for their work. It’s because of this that I took a two-year hiatus from college sports a few years ago and didn’t care to ever watch another collegiate sporting event. While I still hold to my convictions, I’ve changed my mind about not watching college football for one reason: I know some of the players! For the longest, the only sports figures I had ever personally known were my cousin Lawrence Dawsey, an FSU assistant coach; and Keith Stokes, a former receiver for East Carolina and preseason NFL player. While both were cool, I didn’t know them well. I’ve only seen Lawrence once in my life, and Keith was more of my cousin’s friend than a friend to me. But now, the students I once covered are competing in multiple sports around the nation. If you read one of my previous columns, “More than journalism,” you’ll understand what I think about these particular athletes. No matter who we are, if we see someone we know on TV, we celebrate as if we’ve seen ourselves on TV. When I caught Mainland’s Adrian Killins running down the sideline for that touchdown against Michigan, I celebrated as if I were his dad; I was so proud of him. This past weekend, I didn’t get to see him perform, but I heard about Matanzas alum Andre Bodison’s monster game with New Mexico Military Institute. He caught seven passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. And although the game didn’t go well for him or me, I enjoyed watching former Buc A.J. Westbrook play for the Seminoles. And there are so many more. Five years from now, all the kids I’ve created great relationships withy by telling their stories or simply giving advice will be playing on Saturdays and Sundays – and other days for other sports. What a joy! Hopefully you feel that same pride in seeing these athletes succeed.

Josh Spencer connected with Brian Bowler and Ryan Atkins for a pair of scores in the first half. Adrian Killins

JEFF’S GAME PICKS

SIDELINES Seabreeze wins the Embry-Riddle classic

Sandcrabs Dylan Cary returns an interception during the Seabreeze loss against Matanzas.

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY?

Mainland (4-0) vs. Dr. Phillips:

Hey there, football fans. This year, I’ll be making predictions, just for fun. Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts on Twitter @PCOsports.

Mainland wins 43-20. What separates the Bucs from most teams is their ability to score on every drive. Most teams play a field-position game. Not Mainland. The Bucs simply play “Who can score the most points the fastest?” Dr. Phillips may give the Mainland the biggest challenge up to this point, but the Bucs will do what they do best: run away in the end. Mainland has too many offensive and defensive weapons.

Seabreeze (0-3) at Palatka: Palatka wins 20-7. The Sandcrabs have scored a total of seven offensive points in three games. They’re just not that good on offense, and it affects their defense, which has to play the majority of the game on the field. If the Sandcrabs can find a way to score two touchdowns by moving the ball, their defense will rest enough to make this a competitive game.

Flagler Palm Coast (0-3) vs. New Smyrna Beach:

New Smyrna wins 22-20. The Bulldogs and Barracudas have similar styles and similar weaknesses. When both teams drop back to pass, turnovers tend to occur. Both have good defenses and a running game, but the game will go down to whoever makes the fewest offensive mistakes – and if the Barracudas can stop Que’Shaun Byrd.

Father Lopez (1-2) at John Carroll Catholic:

John Carroll wins 31-20. Coming off an impressive win over rival Warner Christian, the Green Wave wants to continue its winning ways. Last season, Spencer threw four interceptions, and Lopez was demolished 52-14 for John Carroll’s homecoming game. While I don’t believe the game will go in that direction, the Rams have enough offensive talent to move on Lopez’s defense, and their defense is a little better than Warner’s.

The Mainland Bucs golf team

Mainland golf continues to win

Buzz Porter wins more medals

The Mainland Buccaneers took down Seabreeze, DeLand, Atlantic and New Smyrna to claim the Greater Halifax Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 19, at the Riviera Golf Course. Scotty Greene led the way with a 77; Logan Reese 81, Keith Froling 89, Tyler Reese 85, Shane Yelverton 85 and Justin Vigo 89. The Bucs have won 15 straight matches, which is the best in the last 15 years.

Buzz Porter – who already has won well over 1,000 track medals – added 11 more medals to his collection from the Kentucky Senior Games on Sunday, Sept. 18, in Danville, Kentucky. Porter won eight gold and three silver medals, and he attained All-American status in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus and shotput. He also broke eight meet records.

Matanzas wins 21-10. The Pirates still have much to improve in order to become elite, but they have enough on both sides of the ball to win games. Philip Moultrie and the offense has become unpredictable, and everyone has trouble moving the ball against the Matanzas defense. While Nease will give the Pirates a challenge they have yet to see this season, Matanzas should still be able to handle the Panthers.

The Seabreeze junior varsity team finished runner-up in its division. Mainland’s August Deberri placed fifth, and Lady Sandcrab Lea Gray placed third in the girls competition.

The two long, wooden sticks tied together with a knotted rope looked slightly on the heavy side, but Lowden lifted it and danced with an easy grace, creating massive bubbles in her path. To catch this magnificent show, one had to be quick, because within just a few seconds of letting the bubbles float into the air, a group of young boys hovered around waiting to pop them. “I did this at a party once,” she said. “I was on a second floor balcony, and people were throwing footballs at me to try to pop the bubbles.” Thankfully no footballs were thrown at the third-annual Granada Grand Festival of the Arts, an event to promote all things creative, from visual artists and demonstrations to musical performances and hands-on activities. omeone gets married. Someone has a birthday. Someone is happy and feels like drawing a sunflower with a smiley face on it. It’s all recorded in chalk by passersby at the Flagler Beach pier, on the Funky Pelican’s public chalkboard. “It is something that has become a draw,” said Erin O’Brien with a laugh. She’s the general manager of the restaurant since it opened in January 2013, and she recently shared some details about how the chalkboard is handled.

Every night, the chalkboard is washed clean, and new chalk is set out. Sometimes during the busy season, the board is washed two or three times a day so there is always some room for the next person to write something new. People have proposed marriage on the wall. Sometimes, when a birthday party is planned at the restaurant but no one can get there early enough, the Funky Pelican will get a call asking, Can you write Happy Birthday to soand-so on the chalkboard for us? And O’Brien is a good sport. “We’ll erase a little room and SEE FUNKY PAGE 18

T

here have long been mobile businesses, such as automotive glass repair, car detailing, locksmiths, etc., but the business model is now expanding. Heavy traffic and busy lives have created an opportunity for several new businesses to become mobile and take their services on the road. Dr. Jennifer Hepler, a chiropractor, recently started Joyful Health Chiropractic, taking her portable equipment with her on house calls. Born and raised in Ormond Beach, Hepler worked in chiropractic clinics in North Carolina and Tallahassee after getting her degree at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Port Orange. She saw the need for mobile chiropractic practice and decided to start one in her home town. “Busy professionals do not have to leave their office, and patients don’t have to battle traffic or sit in a waiting room,” she said. “Families don’t have to figure how to coordinate all their kids’ schedules. Life is busy and time is precious.” Hepler now wants to create a community of mobile businesses to network and support each other. Call 530-5475.

He goes to homes or businesses and recently fixed the brakes on a car while the owner was out on a boat running his charter service. While it’s convenient for customers, he likes the fact that he’s not tied to a brick-and-mortar business. He covers Volusia County, Flagler Beach and Palm Coast. Call Whiting at 846-6326. Mark Granam has been traveling to the customer and fixing cars in Flagler County since 2011. He started fixing brakes and doing oil changes, but now has two vans and a shop in Bunnell so he says he does “anything and everything.” Cars that have broken down make up a part of his business, and he says he saves the customer a tow bill. put it up there for them,” she said. The cost is relatively small, but not zero: O’Brien buys $85 to $100 of chalk per month. There are also strict rules from the city — Flagler Beach had to give the restaurant special permission just to have the chalkboard in the first place — that forbid profanity or advertisements of any kind. So, it has to be closely monitored, and O’Brien instructs the staff to include the chalkboard as part of their regular rounds at the restaurant: check your tables, check the bathroom, check the chalkboard, check your

It’s good for business. “I think it definitely helps us,” O’Brien said. “When people write on it, the first thing they’re doing is asking one of us to take a picture, or they’re taking a selfie, and right away it’s going on social media, and these are tourists from all over the country. It’s given us a lot of exposure to the country, really. People hear about it, and they want to come down.” O’Brien said that’s one of her favorite parts about working at a restaurant: meeting people from all over the world: Russia, Ger-

Did you know the owner of the Funky Pelican — Ormond Beacharea resident Ray Barshay — also owns the River Grille and Crabby Joe’s? Barshay’s co-owner of the Funky Pelican is Ford Menard. Barshay said he tries to make sure all three of the restaurants are more of an experience, and not just a meal. “I try to make them interesting and unique, so there’s more to them than just some drywall and some paint,” he said. The River Grille is located at 950 N. U.S. 1, Ormond Beach. It’s open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. many, England, Australia, Italy, Canada, all over the United States. Owner Ray Barshay said there are plans to add the restaurant’s logo and the name of the city permanently to the chalkboard, to encourage people to take pictures and send them to friends.

On a given day at the Funky Pelican, you might hear Led Zeppelin, the Doors, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That means you’re on the Rolling Stones station on Pandora. The staff picks the music based on who’s in the restaurant. If they see a group of people who they think would think that Led Zeppelin would be a bit too raucous, they’ll turn on some Motown instead. So, if you’re wondering how hip you are, just listen to the music at the Funky Pelican and you’ll know.

A group of local real estate professionals with many years of experience have joined forces, starting SVN Alliance Commercial Real Estate Advisors, a new company at 1275 W. Granada Blvd., Suite 5B. The Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach chambers of commerce and other community leaders helped them celebrate at a recent ribbon cutting ceremony. The managing director is Carl Lentz IV, who has 15 years of experience in commercial real estate in Central Florida. He sees advantages in combining the experience and knowledge

of the professionals who have joined the company. “The primary point is that we’ll be able to share information,” he said. Principals and senior advisors at the company are Tim Davis, 20 years of experience; John Trost, 30 years; Chris Butera, 15 years; Barbara Coomber, 35 years; and Bob Lovelace, 33 years. Lentz said there is a lot of action in commercial real estate with new projects. “We’re all busy as we can be,” he said. Call 310-7900. SVN is a national franchise, and all businesses are locally owned and operated.

Vystar gets big welcome The Vystar Credit Union, 1301 W. Granada Blvd., was packed with a mingling group of people at their official ribbon cutting Sept. 14. “This is the highest attendance and community involvement we’ve had,” said Terry West, president and CEO. Local members of the business community, as well as Vystar employees, attended the event. West told the crowd that the institution started in 1952 with 12 people and now has about 530,000 members. He said the mission has remained the same: to help members improve their financial wellbeing. It is open to anyone in 21 counties in north Florida. He said they get involved

Ashley Biggs, the local branch manager, pointed out that the “teller wall” has been removed, and customers work with individual tellers at pods. “We took down the barrier for more personal service,” she said. In the center of the lobby, computers are arranged at “discovery tables.” Biggs said that while they are set up for modern technology, such as mobile devices, they won’t push customers off into electronics. There will be 11 employees in

the 4,000-square-foot building. It will have drive-through banking, a drive-up ATM and a walk-up ATM. Vystar offers a full-range of services, including checking, savings, certificates of deposit, IRA accounts and loans. A Vystar branch is set to open in Port Orange in December and Daytona Beach next year.

Security First adds employees Kathy Wood has been promoted at Security First to vice president of corporate compliance and Charles Grimsley has joined as staff attorney. The company is near a growth milestone, $500 million in premiums, according to a press release.
