YOUR TOWN REMEMBERING ROB HARRIS

Story of a makeover

After her husband died, Sylvia Shields got some help at the shop. PAGE 4

For the friends of Robert Harris, the start of the school year didn’t quite feel right without their good friend by their side. The 18-year-old Seabreeze High School student, who was killed by a train three months ago, would have been a senior this year. To carry his memory with them, his friends and family planted a golden raintree and installed a plaque on campus Aug. 19. The plaque is engraved with a quote from Harris that reads: “Life isn’t a flowing stream, it’s an oncoming wave.”

Want to see how fast I can pull this gun out of my pocket? Please don’t. Fortunately, no one was injured, but an apparent case of showing off and then accidentally pulling the trigger did result in a Palm Coast man being charged with the crime of discharging a firearm in public, in the shooting of an occupied car on West Granada Boulevard in front of Walmart on Aug. 9. Shot in the dark FROM PAGE 1

Jay P. Estes, 38, of 15 Ridley Lane, was given a notice to appear in court, according to Ormond Beach Police Department spokesman Officer Keith Walker. The charge is a misdemeanor. Estes is a self-employed contractor, according to the police incident report. UH OH ...

On Aug. 9, an Ormond Beach woman, Sonia Bolles, called police after her car was shot as she was turning left onto Williamson Boulevard from westbound West Granada Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. The bullet went through the passenger door and into the center console. Her daughter was in the back seat of the Kia Sedona. The next day, detectives determined, by the bullet’s trajectory, that it came from the Walmart parking lot on a straight line into the door. They found the bullet after taking the console apart. On Aug. 11, Grant Zimmerman, of Ormond Beach, came forward to police and said he met Estes about 9:15 p.m. on the night of the shooting in the Walmart parking lot to sell him a pair of motorcycle boots. He had listed the boots on Craigslist. According to Zimmerman, after completing the sale, the two began talking. The suspect, Estes, then took a revolver from his pocket to show Zimmerman. He emptied rounds from the gun

onto the driver seat of his car, apparently thinking the gun was now empty. Estes then said he wanted to show Zimmerman how quickly he could get the gun out of his pocket because of its size. He told Zimmerman to “come at him like he was going to rob him” but Zimmerman declined. Estes then took the gun out of his pocket, leveled it and pulled the trigger three times. On the third pull, the gun fired and the bullet went toward West Granada Boulevard. The two men looked at each other in disbelief, the statement said, and then left the scene. Zimmerman said the firearm was not pointed at him, but the bullet went by him. Later that night, Estes texted, “I’m sorry,” to Zimmerman. ESTES TURNS HIMSELF IN

On Aug. 23, Estes arrived at the Ormond Beach Police Departmentand then gave a sworn statement. He admitted to pointing the .38-caliber handgun toward West Granada Boulevard and accidentally firing a bullet that he did not know was in the gun. Also in his report, he said he did not remember asking the other man to “come at him.” There was an officer in the parking lot of Walmart at the time of the shooting. The suspect said he saw the officer, but did not tell him about the incident because he was hoping the bullet hit a tree. He went back the next day to look for it.

Parents, teachers and principals around the county are well aware of the adjustment period during the first few weeks back to school. And with the 100 extra children Ormond Beach Middle School is taking on from Campbell Middle School, there’s even more of an adjustment to be made, espcially when it comes to the busing schedule. That however, is not a good enough excuse for Joy McDermott, whose daughter has sometimes had to wait at her stop — which is next to a vacant lot frequently inhabited by homeless people — for nearly an hour. “It’s at the intersection of two vacant lots, and one of them is where homeless people camp out throughout the day and night,” she said. “There’s lawn chairs and blankets everywhere, and for me to leave my daughter there is unacceptable.” McDermott’s daughter, a sixthgrader, is currently one of a few students being picked up at a stop on the corner of Shady Place and South Palmetto Avenue, in Daytona Beach. For the past few weeks

that school has been in session, her bus has been consistently late for over a half hour picking her up and dropping her off. McDermott said she’s tried numerous times to reach the school and the school board’s transportation department about this issue, but no one has called her back. “The homeless people are starting to engage in conversation with the other children,” she said. “Just yesterday morning there was a fight between the kids at the stop, and it drew attention to them. The homeless people walked over like they were going to help break it up, but just sat there and watched.” The Volusia County School Board Director of Transportation Al Chandler said that particular stop has been in use and deemed safe by the county for at least two years. It currently also serves as

a pick-up for Easter Seals Pre-K students. He said a stop is determined to be safe for students based on visability, the distance between intersections, and the volume of traffic, among other things. While he and the rest of the administration are aware of the inconsistenties in the bus stop schedule, he said they won’t add any new stops until they have a full understanding of the times, because it impacts the rest of the stops’ schedules. When it comes to the situation with the homeless people, Chandler said they would typically work with local law enforcement to create a safer enviornment, but it is the parents’ responsibility to get their kids to and from the stop safely.

Chief Jesse Godfrey congratulates Capt. Lisa Rosenthal, the first female captain at OBPD.

“This is all about leadership, integrity, hard work and girl power,” said Robin Davis of Daytona State College at a promotional ceremony Aug. 29 at the Ormond Beach Police Department. At the ceremony, which Chief Jesse Godfrey called “momentous,” Lisa Rosenthal became the first woman captain at OBPD, Michelle Gaden was promoted to sergeant, and Amberly Michaelis was promoted to corporal. Davis was there to congratulate Rosenthal and Gaden, who got their certification at DSC as well as Michaelis, who was certified at Seminole State College. All three teach at DSC. Godfrey, conducting his first promotional ceremony, told the officers to always remember the mission statement of the department, which includes instructions to “enhance the quality of life in our community and protect our citizens from crime through the provision of effective, efficient and responsive police services.” As he presented their gold badges, he also said there are two more rules: “Go home safe every

night, and make sure the officers go home safe every night.” Previously, corporals had silver badges, but Godfrey said he wants them to stand out as supervisors. DREAM FULFILLED

Capt. Rosenthal said she knew she wanted to go into police work since the age of 5. She had an uncle who was an officer. “It’s my calling,” she said. “It’s been a rewarding adventure, and I’m working with the best people in law enforcement. It’s beyond what I ever dreamed of.” She started as a community service officer at OBPD in 1996 and has worked in criminal investigations and as a K-9 handler. The first female to be promoted to sergeant in 2014, she is an Air Force veteran and serves as the department’s DUI instructor. She is pursuing a degree in criminal justice and plans to attend the Southern Police Institute Command Officers Development Course. INTEREST IN CRIMINOLOGY

Sgt. Gaden said she was influenced by her grandfather and cousins who were police officers, and her

interest started at an early age. “I took care of people in high school like I was a police officer,” she said. She was always interested in criminology and has a bachelor’s degree in the subject from Florida State University. She started at OBPD in 2002 as a community service officer and became a police officer in 2003. In 2013, she managed the accreditation process. IMPORTANCE OF FITNESS

Cpl. Michaelis has a degree in sports and recreation management from the University of Minnesota and has incorporated that into her work at OBPD, where she is fitness program coordinator. The job of police officer is active and physical and fits in well with her background. “It’s extremely important to stay in shape,” she said. “It keeps us alive.” She joined OBPD in 2012 as a police officer and has served as a member of the Crime Suppression Team. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in criminal justice at American Military University and is an adjunct professor at DSC.

HIGHLIGHT

Gene and Sylvia Shields were an entrepreneurial dream team. Together, they successfully opened and ran two supermarkets, a beachside motel and their favorite, a health food store in downtown Ormond Beach called Nature’s Garden. So when Gene died in March from melanoma, Sylvia Shields couldn’t imagine running the store without him. “This was his favorite business,” she said. “He was such a kind and gentle man. He really loved people. I used to tell him he was an angel in disguise. Now he really is an angel.” Right after Gene’s death, Sylvia Shields decided she wanted to sell Nature’s Garden, the store at 58 W. Granada Blvd., that they had owned together for 18 years. Though at first, she was confident in her decision, as she began working with an agent, she said everything inside her was telling her,“No.” “I told the agent that I didn’t want to rip the rug out from under him, but if this first deal didn’t go through, then I was done,” she said. “It didn’t, and I just felt this wonderful peace. I knew I had done the right thing, and that Gene was happy.” Like most others familiar with the situation, Gretchen Neal thought the store had sold and was surprised to see Sylvia Shields there in April. They got to talking, and Shields told Neal she wanted to give it a new look. With Neal’s expertise as an artist and designer, they felt their new partnership was meant to be. Neal offered to help at no cost. They pulled ideas from Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Whole Foods and every funky market Neal could find during her trip to Europe this summer. The store’s interior got a paint job, artistic signage and decor from Neal, a kids’ corner so parents can shop in peace, new local items including gift baskets, succulents and goodies from local resturants like Rose Villa, and a “beach corner,” featuring ice cream and a sign that reads, “Good things are going to happen.” “I love this business,” Sylvia Shields said. “When you’ve been here this long, you really become a part of the community.”

Dodging volleyballs at the Vanilla Ice show I attended a Vanilla Ice concert this week, and it was both an exhilarating and terrifying experience.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

This week, I checked off an item on my bucket list titled “Things I Never Thought I’d Do”: go to a Vanilla Ice concert in the ballroom of the Hilton on a Sunday evening. But I did. And it was kind of life changing. Like most people, I’m a fan on Vanilla Ice in the sense that I start most of my sentences with, “stop, collaborate and listen,” but I never thought I’d see him live, a mere 15 minutes from my apartment. At first, I was a little confused because the stage was decorated with stuffed tigers, an inflatable boat and feathered boas. I mean, I know Mr. Ice is a complex man, but this seemed slightly out of character. So when Papercutt, an ’80s hair metal band, came out on stage donning some insane wigs and blue eyeshadow

(which was very well done by the way), everything made sense again. For what felt like a solid two hours, we jammed out to covers of “Poison,” “Guns ’N Roses,” and “Motley Crue.” Their stage presence was immaculate and made standing for a long time in uncomfortable wedges almost worth it. Until one of the members (whose name might have been Skid Mark) hopped into the inflatable boat and attempted to crowd surf. Let’s just say I got a foot in my face, and he didn’t make it very far. And for a moment I forgot Vanilla Ice was even scheduled to perform until the crowd started demanding him. The lights came on, and the stage crew rearranged the decorations more to Mr. Ice’s tastes, which included a random clown doll, an inflatable grim reaper arch and a DJ who wore a skeleton ski mask. The room went black, green fog that faintly smelled like cotton candy filled the air, and Vanilla Ice stormed the stage. Now I’ll be honest, I could not understand a word Mr. Ice was saying. But his initial energy was so infectious that I found myself attempting to

sing along to songs I had never heard before — until the water bottles came out. I don’t know what it is about concerts that makes performers think we want to be drenched, but let me assure you, we do not. Outdoor concerts where it’s really hot and I feel like I’m going to die, maybe. Inside the Hilton’s ballroom on a Sunday evening, maybe not. My friend Madeline was especially perturbed by Vanilla Ice and his clown posse (there were literally like four clowns on stage) spraying water all over the crowd. At one point she started pleading to the rapper: “Mr. Ice, please stop.” Needless to say, he didn’t listen.

While the water bottle escapades continued, Ice got a little more creative and added in volleyballs. That was enough to make us duck behind a woman much taller than we were, who screamed that she would keep us safe. I wish I would have learned the name of our hero so I could give her a proper shoutout. Ice’s finale was of course the song we all know and love, “Ice, Ice Baby,” and we all sang along/dodged more water bottles and volleyballs while confetti rained from the ceiling. While I definitely enjoyed the concert, it might be more accurate to say that I survived it. Word to your mother.

Volusia County Emergency Management has weather stations throughout the county that provide detailed weather data. Live cameras at three of these weather stations are accessible to the public, so being prepared for daily storms is just as easy as being prepared for the major ones. “Every family should create a disaster plan and start stocking their disaster supply kits,” said Jim Judge, Volusia County’s emergency management director, in a press release. “After a disaster, emergency workers may not be able to reach everyone right away. In some cases, it may take three or more days for help to arrive. SORRY IF I SCRATCHED YOU CAR ... NOT 12:51 p.m. — 700 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Vandalism. The victim said he believed his pickup truck was keyed while he was having dinner at a restaurant. Surveillance video showed a male and female exit a car that was parked next to the victim’s pickup truck and then enter the restaurant. Later, they exited the restaurant and went back to their car. Midway from backing out of the parking spot, the vehicle stopped. The video then showed the male suspect get out of the car and stand between the victim’s truck and his car for “an usual amount of time.” The victims then left the lot. A still-shot was made of the suspect from the video.

IT’S A HABIT 10 a.m. — 700 Block of South Nova Road. Possession of Paraphernalia, Driving with Suspended License. The officer observed a car with a cracked windshield having difficulty staying in its lane and almost hitting another vehicle. After being stopped, the driver said her license was suspended. She said she had just gotten out of court for the last time she got in trouble for having a suspended license. The officer found out through a computer check that she had been cited five times for driving with a suspended license. Asked why she kept driving with a suspended license, she said she didn’t know, but was simply trying to get to work. The suspect was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.

SHOP AND SAVE 10:30 p.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard Petit Theft. The officer saw the suspect going around to people in a parking lot and asking them if they wanted to buy laundry detergent or beer. He saw one container of detergent being sold. The suspect left in a car, but the officer made a traffic stop. In a post-Miranda interview, the suspect admitted to stealing the items at a different store by loading them into a cart and pushing it out the door. He said he was struggling financially and needed the money. The two bottles of detergent and two 24-packs of beer cost a total of $107.82.

Student-athletes, your season is long from over.

n the last year, Mainland junior D’Marcus Adams has been winning. During track season, he won four events to lead Mainland to a second consecutive district title. He went on to win two events at regionals to lead the Bucs to their first regional championship. And, in his first game with the varsity football team, Adams caught three balls for 175 yards and a touchdown. Despite all of his success, someone important is missing in his life: his mother Ruby Hampton, who died of cancer when he was 7 years old. “It was difficult for me at the beginning,” Adams said. “My sister had to pick me up from school, and I always thought my mom would come back, but it never happened. I didn’t understand it until I got older.” Adams still keeps a lot of his mother’s photos hanging up in his room. He says that a day doesn’t go by that he doesn’t think about her, reminiscing on the times she would take him to church and to family reunions. Nine years later, he has emerged as an outstanding student-athlete, and Adams hopes to keep Ruby Hampton’s memory alive

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Mainland blanks DeLand: The Bucs opened their season with a 35-0 shut out over the DeLand Bulldogs on Friday, Aug. 26, in DeLand. Quarterback Denzel Houston scored two touchdowns on the ground from 11 yards and 10 yards out. C.J. Wilson also ran a score in from a yard, after Houston connected with Jason Colubiale on a 50-yard pass. Wilson scored again on a 10-yard run, and Mainland blocked a punt, which ended in Kamron Lee’s hands, who took it in for a touchdown.

through his success. He dedicates every event to her. That’s why he writes “R.I.P. Momma” on the tape on his cleats for every game. A FATHER HE’S PROUD TO HAVE

While he may not have two parents, Adams enjoys the continual support of his father, Elbert Adams. “He’s at every game, every single one of them,” he said. “And I’m glad he’s there for me, supporting me in everything I do. That means a lot to me.” Adams says he inherited his sports abilities from his dad, who wrestled and boxed in his high school years.

o, Mr. or Ms. Student-Athlete, you’re off to what you might call a “bad start”? Let me help you out. The first game of the season has never prevented teams from reaching or achieving their ultimate goal. Remember the offseason when you’d wake up every day and go to practice? When you’d work on the same drills and talk about the same formations with your coaches over and over, yearning for game days? Well, you spent those months in preparation for a full season, not for two or three games — no matter how important they may seem. Have you considered that, right now, your team is the worst it’s going to be this season? You have yet to create chemistry with all of your teammates. You will surpass your current weightlifting max. Runners, you will outrun your current time. Swimmers, you will shave more seconds from your lap times. I’m pretty sure your coaches have already said — and will continue to say — that one of the team goals is to get better each week. And yes, I get it. You played against or raced your rival, and you really wanted to beat them. I wouldn’t expect anything else from passionate studentathletes. You spent the last few weeks talking trash, preparing for that team, hoping you’d get to celebrate a season-opening win. So, it’s OK if you feel disappointed. But, for the sake of your future performance, your team’s mentality and the remaining games, leave that game in that week — last week. Your next opponent doesn’t care that you lost or won your previous game. If you did lose, your next opponent only wants your misery to continue. And, in case you’re still not convinced, think about this: Seabreeze football reached the playoffs in 2014 after starting the season 1-5, and Matanzas football failed to reach the playoffs after beginning last season 6-0. There’s a reason why you still have a practice schedule this week: You are still alive.

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY? Hey there, football fans. This year, I’ll be making predictions, just for fun. Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts on Twitter @PCOsports or leave a comment on our Facebook page.

Flagler Palm Coast at Clay

Clay wins 24-10. The Bulldogs shocked the Blue Devils last season, getting past them 7-0. This year will prove different. Clay’s running back Colin Wilson will have a big game, finding open holes, while Que’Shaun Byrd will have to create his own lanes. The Blue Devils will wear down the Bulldogs and stop them at the right times to get their first win of the season.

Father Lopez at Warner Christian Father Lopez wins 31-21. Father Lopez has retaken the reins of this rivalry. After losing big to Melbourne Central, the Green Wave will look to take its frustration out on Warner, for the third time in a row. Quarterback Josh Spencer and Ryan Atkins will

team up for a couple of touchdowns, and the Lopez will get its season on the right track.

Mainland vs. Bartram Trail Mainland wins 41-24. The Bucs shut out rival DeLand 35-0 in the opener, sending a huge statement. Traveling to St. Johns to face Class 7A eighth-ranked Bartram Trail Bears, they will not have as easy of a game, when they won 56-24. The Bears’ quarterback Joey Gatewood will have Bartram Trail in the game throughout the first half, but Mainland will pull away.

Matanzas vs. Atlantic Matanzas wins 24-16. Throughout their season opener against FPC, the Pirates reminded me of my wrongful prediction. This week, they host the Sharks, whom they beat 41-2 last season. That won’t happen this year. The Sharks are a totally different team this year. Although they will get win No. 2, Matanzas will have to play just as hard as last week to do so.

Seabreeze vs. DeLand DeLand wins 27-7. Both teams were shut down in their openers, so both Seabreeze and DeLand will be looking to get a win. The Sandcrabs have struggled in the last several years against all teams, while DeLand, which has talent, seems to play only good teams. DeLand will score enough for a big win.

SIDELINES Mainland wins two early district volleyball games The Lady Buccaneers opened their season with a three-set win over rival Deltona 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 on Aug. 23. They returned to action two days later and outlasted Atlantic in a five-set thriller 25-18, 27-25, 2520, 25-16, 15-4. Kamari Potter led all players with 21 kills, and Morgan Mundell added 10 kills. Abby Rich led the Bucs with 19 assists. Mainland will next play at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Pine Ridge.

Lady Green Wave volleyball off to good start

Seabreeze still seeks the first win of the season, while Mainland seeks to remain undefeated.

Father Lopez Catholic kicked off its season with a win over now-district-foe Seabreeze 30-28, 25-16, 25-15 on Aug. 23. The Green Wave fell to New Smyrna Beach a few days later but returned to the won column against Warner Christian with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-17 victory. Tayln Allard led Lopez with nine kills and five aces, and Tiera White had seven kills. Lopez will return to action against Pierson at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Pierson.

The Sandcrabs couldn’t get it going against rival Spruce Creek, falling 32-7 on Friday, Aug. 26, in Daytona. Dylan Cary provided Seabreeze its only shining moment, when he intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

them out of the end zone, except once when Cade Green scored on a run.

The couple met on the dance floor, and the rest is history.

r. Thomas Saurwein first spotted Linda Marlow out on the dance floor, where she was moving and gliding all on her own. He quietly approached her, asked her to dance, and, as they say, the rest is history. Two years later, the couple shared another dance at the Ormond Beach Senior Center on Aug. 24, this time in celebration of their wedding. “Our romance developed on the dance floor,” Marlow said. Surrounded by their friends at the Council on Aging center, the couple waltzed to “Can I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life?” by Ann Murray and renewed their vows that they officially took during a small ceremony Aug. 20. “We wanted to do something simple Saturday,” Marlow said, “but then people found out we were getting married. They’ve watched us meet and dance for a while, and we’re just so blessed to have them.” The couple still loves to dance.

Linda Marlow is a professional dancer — and Dr. Thomas Saurwein just follows her lead.

The couple is known for their love of dance.

They come to the senior center at least four times a week to practice. “I’m a professional dancer,” Marlow said. “Yeah, she just holds me up,” Saurwein teased. “Steers me, and tries to move me in the right direction.”

Locals challenge Lochte The Olympic star will take part in a charity event at the YMCA. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Ryan Lochte and Rowdy Gaines will be coming to the Ormond Beach YMCA after all. A Rematch after Rio Charity Swim event had been announced earlier, but was put on hold briefly after the troubles of the Olympic swim team. Now, the board of directors for the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation have agreed to proceed with the fundraising event. The ticket price of $100 includes

soft drinks and appetizers. Tickets are available at the Ormond Beach Family YMCA, Port Orange Family YMCA and at the SMA Foundation office in Daytona Beach. The Ormond Beach Family YMCA Aquatics Center will host the event at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28. Also featured at the event will be Charles Lydecker, former Brown and Brown executive and YMCA board member, who has several swimming accomplishments himself. He supports the event. “Ryan is a local celebrity athlete who has done much good for his sport and community for over 14 years, and he made a mistake. I stand by him and am ready to move forward with this fun event for two

worthy causes,” Lydecker said in a press release. The event will raise money for Ormond Beach YMCA’s capital campaign and SMA’s Huger Adolescent Campus at Tiger Bay. The swim event will include relays in the under-10 group, high school swimmers from Daytona Beach Speed and masters swimmers from the YMCA, all swimming against Lochte. The swim event will culminate with a race between Lydecker and Lochte. Commentary on all of the races will be delivered by three-time gold medalist and NBC commentator Rowdy Gaines. Lydecker holds three U.S. masters swimming world records and

was inducted into the Smith Point National Lifeguard Champions Hall of Fame, according to the press release. Lochte grew up swimming at the Port Orange Family YMCA, and has become an 11-time Olympic medalist. Gaines is a three-time Olympic medalist and an Olympic commentator.

Finding independence The organization promotes the independence of people with disabilities. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Over 14 years ago, Lorraine Ozkan was healthy and working at a hospice in Port Orange. Then, one day, she fell while taking a shower. Her life was never the same. “I closed my eyes to wash my hair, and fell to the bottom of the tub,” she said. “That was the beginning of when I noticed things were happening to me.” After she also fell down while walking through the hallway at work, and had a few other incidents, she realized something was very wrong. She was then diagnosed with a brain disease, and told she only had a few more years to live. Her employer found out she was sick, and their insurance wouldn’t cover a disabled person, so she became unemployed. She said if she hadn’t found Disability Solutions for Independent Living, she doesn’t know where she would be.

Farah & Farah donated $1,000 to Disability Solutions for Independent Living Inc. during a seminar Aug. 26 at Daytona State College

Lorraine Ozkan, an Ormond Beach resident, said Disability Solutions was the best thing that ever happened to her.

“It’s one of the best things that ever happened to me as a handicapped person,” the Ormond Beach resident said. “If it wasn’t for them, I’d be more withdrawn. Disability Solutions calls me all

the time and comes to visit. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t know that I had rights.” Disability Solutions for Independent Living is a nonprofit in Daytona Beach that promotes the independence of people with disabilities through empowerment and support services. More than half of the members of its board of directors are people with disabilities. Services are available to people with disabilities who meet the following criteria:

n The individual has a severe physical, mental, cognitive or sensory impairment; n His or her ability to function independently is substantially limited; n The delivery of independent living services will improve the ability for the individual to move toward functioning independently. the community, saying they were the first to donate money in the coalition of businesses that started the beautification of North U.S. 1. AWARD WINNERS

The company was honored at the Flagler Parade of Homes this year, receiving four awards, for the fourth year in a row. Their models received two Grand Awards, a Reader’s Choice Award and an Award of Excellence. Vanacore Homes was the top winner at the Volusia Parade of Homes awards ceremony this past March with two first-place awards. Their models also received a second place award and a third place. At the ceremony, the Vanacores thanked those who worked with them over the years. “We want to express our gratitude to the incredible network of vendors, subcontractors and friends we’ve made over the years,” Scott Vanacore said. at the company for 12 years. Gretchen Smith, government affairs director for the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber was excited to see growth in Flagler County and neighboring Ormond Beach. “It’s great to see the homebuilding business back again,” she said. Rick Fraser, executive director of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, agreed the building industry is back. Each month the

Todd and Scott Vanacore

From building many, many “tree forts” together as kids, the brothers have become one of the area’s premier builders. Asked how two brothers worked together over the years, at first Scott Vanacore said, with a smile “a lot of patience.” He said they have a lot of mutual respect. The day-to-day duties are not divided; they both do “whatever it takes” to get the work done. In addition to homes, Vanacore is also in the storage business. “That’s what got us through the slow times,” Todd Vanacore said. Call 672-8285 or visit vanacorehomes.com.

When a home is built, it has a ripple effect throughout the community. From the subcontractors who build it, to the real estate agents who sell it and the furniture store that eventually furnishes it, the home industry impacts a lot of people, including the home buyers. This was evident Aug. 24 as more than 200 people attended the 25th-anniversary party of Vanacore Homes, which coincided with the unveiling of their new golf duplex villas, called Scottsmoor, in the Halifax Plantation Communities. “Just think how many lives they have touched over 25 years,” said Cindy Dalecki, owner of Marketing 2 Go, who worked with the company owners, Todd and Scott Vanacore, on the celebration. Business people at the celebration included Alison Boscovich, of State Farm, who said she is glad to see new homes going up. “They meet the new building codes and people can get lower insurance rates,” she said. Vanacore Homes has built nearly 2,500 homes and town homes throughout Volusia and Flagler counties. They have a staff of 15 people, four of which have worked
