It doesn’t take long for residents of Plaza Drive in Ormond-bythe-Sea to get to Ormond Beach. Their backyards border the city. And now, the residents can just walk a few doors down their street. A lot in the middle of the block has been annexed into the city, and it is in the process of being rezoned from a county designation, “Urban Medium Density” to a city zone, “Low Density Residential.” The lot is undeveloped and heavily covered with vegetation. All of the other lots on the street are in Volusia County, except for the one on the corner by State Road A1A which has also been annexed into the city. The Planning Board recently recommended that the city approve the rezoning, and the City Commission will consider it

Office, retail center on Granada nears final OK Developer addresses concerns of neighbors. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Residents had their last chance on Aug. 15 to put in their two cents on the development coming to the corner of West Granada Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue. Last fall, residents appeared at Planning Board and City Commission meetings to protest the proposed development. They were concerned about the character of their street being transformed by added traffic and a business development taking the

place of woods on the corner. Developer and owner Bill Navarra plans to construct an 11,400-square-foot office and retail center on 1.65 acres with five individual units. A photo of the planned building brought praise from the audience, with several calling it attractive. Navarra already has tenants: an eye glass store; his own office, Realty Pros Assured; his real estate title company; and a dental office. He said he wanted low-impact businesses to address the con-

cerns of the residents. “That’s what people wanted and what we went for,” he said. “It’s very low key with no night traffic.” Navarra also said he is spending $50,000 on a six-foot wall and $100,000 on landscaping along Magnolia Avenue in a 10-foot buffer. In earlier meetings, a big concern of the residents on Magnolia Avenue was the added traffic. Glenn Storch, attorney and developer representative, said that to address that concern,

NEXT STEP

The next and final step in the approval process will be for the city Planning Department to make an administrative review of the site plan to make sure it meets codes.

there will be an entrance on Magnolia Avenue, but not an exit. Cars must exit on Granada Boulevard. “We tried to do as you wished,” he told the audience. That was not enough to satisfy some of the Magnolia Avenue residents, who say they wanted to keep all traffic off their street. “That’s the one thing we were fighting,” said one resident, “and we’re not going to give up.” Storch said it was a safety issue, because without the Magnolia entrance, westbound cars would have to make a U-turn and come back to enter the plaza. The meeting resulted in one change in the plan. The developers agreed to move the garbage bins from the east side by Magnolia Avenue over to the west side. One speaker from the audience said the garbage trucks make loud noises early in the morning when they empty the dumpsters. The next step in the process is for the city Planning Department to make an administrative review of the site plan to make sure it meets codes and then give approval. Navarra said he’s ready to begin construction. At meetings last year, Planning Director Rick Goss said he would “bump up” the neighborhood meeting to a City Commission meeting if neighborhood issues were not resolved. After the recent meeting, he said it is still possible it could go back to the City Commission. He has commissioned an independent traffic study, and if it does not agree with the developer’s design, including the entrance on Magnolia Avenue, he would seek City Commission review.

RESIDENTS REACT After the meeting, dissatisfaction could be heard among at least some of the residents who attended, unhappy that a development is going to replace a wooded area at the end of their street. It was rezoned from residential last year so that development could take place. "You're taking away our beauty," one resident said.

Are dark car windows a problem? Citizen meets with city officials. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Emily Blackwood

Debra Stalk and Maria Stalk helped their daughter, Kathryn Stalk, sort through the few items that weren't totally damaged by the fire.

Community comes together to help woman who lost home, three cats to fire EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Kathryn Stalk woke up choking: Her kitchen was on fire. “You couldn’t see 10 feet in front of you,” she said. “I heard my cats running around in a frenzy, and I just fell to the floor and starting crawling.” Stalk quickly made her way to the front door, where she punched through the jalousie window on her front door and started screaming for help. Her neighbor, Misty Elaine McGlothin, heard her and chucked a cinder block though the window of the trailer, and Stalk leaped out. “After I got out, I realized my four cats were inside,” Stalk said. “I started screaming, ‘My babies! I need to go back inside and get my babies!’ Again, her neighbor helped. “Misty, I love her — I don’t know anything about her, but I love her,” Stalk said. “She pulled me back and thank God she did because in that state of mind I would have jumped back in that house.” Another one of her neighbors, Stephanie (Stalk did not know her last name), busted through the front door and managed to grab one of Stalk’s four cats, Piccolo. The other three — Virgo, Bear and Nugget — died in the fire. Piccolo had one of his ears singed and second-degree burns on all four paws, and Stalk suffered cuts, bruises and a third-degree burn on her left arm. “I miss them so much,” Stalk said with tears in her eyes. “People say that they’re just cats, but no, they were my babies. If you wake up every two hours to feed kittens from a bottle, than you raise them. They are your babies.” Along with the loss of her furry family, the majority of Stalk’s belongings were destroyed. Among the things that survived were a Pikachu stuffed animal

she’s had since she was 9, some math homework, and a “Xena the Warrior Princess” cardboard cutout. “It was my first home away from my parents,” she said. “All I could think of was, ‘How can I afford this and where am I gonna live?’” Currently she is staying with her mothers, Maria Stalk and Debra Stalk. The entire family says they’re overwhelmed with the outpouring of love they’ve received from the community to comfort their daughter and help her rebuild her life after the fire that consumed her home Aug. 10 — just one day before her 24th birthday. Kathryn suffers from mental health issues and all her medication she needs got destroyed in the fire. Red Cross came in and helped. Concerned Citizens For Animal Welfare For Volusia County helped get the word out about a GoFundMe account and helped raise donations. A pharmacist at Walgreens paid for her antibiotics. “It’s unexpected,” Debra Stalk said. “People really do care. I get

Robert Baumer, of Ormond Beach, was happy to announce recently that the city is taking steps on a problem he’s been looking into for more than a year: illegally tinted windows in cars. Baumer is a regular motorcycle rider. If he is sitting at an intersection, he can’t see if the driver of another car is distracted by a cell phone or other device, he said. Also, he can’t see the driver’s face to gauge his intention, to see if his right of way might be violated. “My personal safety is affected when I can’t see into a car,” he said. Having windows too dark is a primary offense, meaning that drivers can be pulled over for the infraction. Baumer made a Freedom of Information Act request and found that out that 16 tickets were give out for dark window in 2015 in Ormond Beach and there were 47 written warnings. He believes there should be more tickets. Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said officers have discretion as to whether to issue a ticket, written warning or verbal warning. He did not have a comment on the numbers supplied by Baumer. Police use a hand-held device to measure the window tint. PUBLIC EVENT ANNOUNCED

the chills thinking about it.” “People have given money, donated shoes, clothes,” Maria Stalk said, “all the necessities you don’t think you need.” Currently, the family has raised over $1,000 to cover some of Piccolo’s veterinary bills and Kathryn Stalk’s medical bills. The family started a new GoFundMe account titled “Help Kathryn Stalk rebuild her life,” that currently has raised $395. The goal is $2,000. “We understand people can’t give money all the time,” Kathryn Stalk said. “A prayer is just as good.” Courtesy photo

Kathryn Stalk celebrated her birthday (which was the day after the fire) at Bubba Gump’s in Daytona Beach, and after hearing about her situation, the staff pulled together and gave her an envelope full of cash.

In a recent meeting with Baumer, Godfrey and City Manager Joyce Shanahan agreed to advertise the tinting law to the public, and also have a Free Window Tint Screenings event. From 3 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24, the public can have their tint checked at the Ormond Beach Police Department, 170 W. Granada Blvd. “We want to heighten the awareness,” Shanahan said. The tinting problem comes from “after-market” products. Professional tint installers can be charged if found violating the law. Baumer also asked for a commitment to increase enforcement, but Godfrey said they should begin with “baby steps,” and see how the event goes before considering more enforcement. Baumer now says he has gone from complaining to cooperating. “I believe something good will come out of this,” he said. For more information, visit ormondbeach.org, click on “News and Announcements” and then “Free Vehicle Window Tint Screenings.” THE AAA POSITION

The American Automobile Association agrees with Baumer. “Dark windows can make it difficult for other road users to see a driver’s face for non-verbal communication and cues,” said spokeswoman Karen Morgan in an email. “Dark windows increase risks for police officers when they cannot see clearly into vehicles during traffic stops.” She also said studies show very dark window tints can reduce driver visibility.

in a first reading tentatively set for Sept. 20. Residents within 300 feet of the lot were notified by certified letter that the Planning Board was going to consider the rezoning, and that brought a couple of residents to the meeting with a question. “Why?” one asked the Planning Board. “It doesn’t seem to make sense to have one house annexed.”

Attorney Randy Hayes said the property owner requested annexation. Board Chairman Doug Thomas said he didn’t know why the owner would request annexation, but perhaps it was because of lower taxes. “One of the best kept secrets is that people actually pay lower property tax in the city than they do in the county,” he said. The Plaza Drive resident also asked why the residents were not notified about the annexation, but were notified by letter about the rezoning now that it’s a “done deal.” Hayes explained that the annexation meeting was advertised in the local daily newspaper, which is the legal requirement. After the meeting, Planning Director Rick Goss said that the city revised its Comprehensive Plan in 2008. The plan now requires that if a property connects to city water and/or sewer, it must be annexed into the city if it is contiguous with the city. If it is not contiguous, the property owner must sign an agreement to be annexed if it ever becomes contiguous. “Newly annexed areas and new development shall not impose additional tax burdens on City residents … as it pertains to public facilities and services,” the plan now states. Goss said this policy has been enforced since the plan was adopted in 2010. It does not affect properties already receiving city water. There are lots in Ormond-bythe-Sea along State Road A1A where the owners have entered an annexation agreement when they were connected to the sewer line along the highway. Goss said by email that since there is no sewer line on Plaza Drive, the property owner will need to have a septic tank installed.

Family escapes from house fire Ormond Beach Fire Department units were dispatched at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 16 to a residential structure fire at 267 Midway Ave. with a report of flames coming from the windows. Crews arrived with flames showing from the front area of the home and a vehicle parked next to the home on fire. The three occupants who were at the home, one adult and two children, were able to get out of the home safely on their own, according to a city spokeswoman. A family of six is being assisted by the Red Cross. The house is located west of U.S. 1 and south of West Granada Boulevard. The fire was quickly extinguished and appears to be unintentional. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal and damages are estimated to be approximately $40,000. Ormond Beach Fire Department was assisted by Volusia County. Call 676-3255.

Man charged with duct-taping and ziptying teenage girl An Ormond Beach man was arrested Aug. 8 after admitting to police that he zip-tied a child’s wrists and tied up her legs to prevent her from running away. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance after Anthony Hubble, 50, drove his car into the front lawn of a home on Alamanda Drive while trying to chase a 15-year-old girl who had run away from his home. According to the police report, officers found the girl crying inside the vehicle with duct tape and zip ties wrapped around her left wrist. She told police earlier that morning, Hubble ordered her into his room and told her, “Get ready to get your a-- beat.” One witness observed Hubble holding the girl, and said she was not struggling. Another witness said he saw the man on top of the girl with a woman’s bra in his hand. That witness ordered him to get off her and tried to seperate them. Ultimately, Hubble was arrested for felony child abuse.

Observer endorsements Have you decided? Here is some food for thought. This year, as in every election cycle, the Ormond Beach Observer published an election guide and then gathered a few trusted community leaders to discuss the candidates. On this page, we will present our recommendations for who we think will help make this community thrive in the next four years. Do you agree? Disagree? Please email editor@ormondbeachobserver.com. We will do our best to publish all the letters we receive related to the candidates before the Aug. 30 primary. Letters may be edited for clarity and length.

School Board, District 4 Carl Persis has done it all in education. He’s been a teacher, assistant principal and principal — but not just any principal: He was the county’s principal of the year. He has a master’s degree in education leadership. He’s also level-headed, and we can trust him to make good decisions.

DON’T FORGET YOUR HOMEWORK ...

County Council Chair Jason Davis has been a fascinating political story in Volusia County. At times he’s been a controversial figure to the point of distraction. Meanwhile, Ed Kelley is someone we know well in Ormond Beach. He is a man of dignity, a statesman. He has led the city of Ormond Beach to a place of high standards and can be trusted to make the right decisions. In his responses to the Observer’s election guide, Kelley demonstrates his ability to see the big picture. On the County Council, no one can dominate the discussion and expect to accomplish much. Kelley’s priorities in office include instituting more workshops to help the new members of the council (including himself) get acclimated and start discussios with the same information in front of them. After the harmony that was accomplished on the Ormond Beach City Commission during his tenure here, we look forward to someone like Kelley at the helm of the County Council.

ment and business experience. Two areas in which the two candidates differ, based on their responses in our election guide, are with regard to the County Council’s wisdom in spending tax dollars. Post feels slightly positive toward the county’s use of tax dollars, whereas Smith is slightly negative toward. We feel that there is room to improve, so we lean toward Smith’s view. Second is the candidates’ opinion of the county’s relationship with Ormond Beach. Post feels it’s quite positive, while Smith disagrees. Again, this is an area where we see room for improvement, and considering this is the District that will represent Ormond Beach, we value Smith’s perspective on this issue.

and should be retained. In Group 4, there is no incumbent. Sebrina Slack is well qualified, and she gets our vote over the controversial Stasia Warren, although she is also well qualified.

Volusia Sheriff Three candidates stand out in this race: Mike Chitwood, Dave Brannon and Eric Dietrich. Brannon is cop’s cop. Chitwood is a former Philadelphia police officer and currently the Daytona Police Department’s chief. He’s a charismatic figure with tremendous experience. But Dietrich has an advantage over Chitwood in two important ways. First, he’s the hand-picked successor to longtime sheriff Ben Johnson, and that means a lot to our committee. Second, he has risen through the agency and seen every step along the way, which means he knows the agency better than Chitwood.

In a field of four candidates for this nonpartisan race, Lisa Lewis has the most important experience: She is actively doing the job of Supervisor of Elections after being appointed. County Council District 4 The two most appealing candidates to our ad hoc editorial committee are Heather Post and Al Smith. Post has done a good job of being visible in the community during the campaign and appears to have a passion for the job. She is a self-made businesswoman and appears to be a good choice for a spot on the County Council. Al Smith is also appealing for his longtime community involve-

Judge DuPont shows his incompetence in judicial forum Dear Editor: I recently watched the July 26 judicial forum put on by the St. Johns County Bar and League of Woman Voters to learn about the judges running for office. To say the least, I was stunned that one of the judges showed either his incompetence or ignorance of the law and disregard for the Constitution. I watch the forum a second time on WQXT Channel 22 to make sure I hadn’t misheard what I though he said. When asked about judicial philosophy, Judge Scott DuPont stated that he would refuse to find a law unconstitutional — that the person standing on

Larry Bartlett has the most support from our committee, over Alan Burton or Mike Swanto. Bartlett is talented and has spent the last eight years as the attorney for Volusia’s Value Adjustment Board. We recommend Bartlett.

Circuit Judge, 7th Circuit Judges When it comes to circuit judges, the learning curve is high, and so there is an incentive to retaining incumbents, as long as they are doing a good job. Our sources tell us that the incumbents in Group 10 (Scott DuPont), Group 13 (David Hood) and Group 17 (Howard O. McGillin Jr.) are doing well

the Constitution would have to appeal the case “up the food chain.” He said he has been asked to do so and said, “As a sitting judge I have refused to do so.” This type of judge is the problem. With that statement, he showed utter disregard for our Constitution and told every person who may claim a right to free speech, freedom of religion or right to assemble they had better not be in his court or he will always side for the government’s law, county ordinance or city code over their Constitutional rights, and they will have to amass a war chest to afford lawyers to appeal him. This is irresponsible. I would urge all who value their Constitutional rights to vote him out of office. He has

shown he can·1 be trusted with our basic rights. DAN ARMSTRONG Ponte Vedra Beach

Warren is the candidate with judicial experience Dear Editor: Since no interviews were conducted for circuit judge positions, I wish to call attention to the qualifications of one candidate running for Group 4: Stasia Warren. Judge Warren is the only candidate with judicial experience running for this seat. Having served as a county court judge for 20 years, she is ready to serve on day one. Her experience is diverse and

U.S. House of Representatives, District 6 Fred Costello is Mr. Ormond Beach. He served on the City Commission and as mayor and has been heavily involved in the community. However, this is not a race in which local ties matter a great deal. This is a position on the federal level, and whoever is elected will be making decisions related to national security and federal budgets. With that in mind, we must consider the incumbent, Ron DeSantis. This guy is a rock star. His resume is impressive, including his military service. Of the candidates running for Congress in this district, who do you want to be grilling the FBI director about the Clinton email scandal? We recommend DeSantis.

encompasses both a private practice and serving as a prosecutor for six years. Those who know Stasia know she has the judicial temperament and ability to manage the large caseloads. It was stated best by a longtime attorney: When your family or fortune is at stake, you want an experienced judge.

I’m gonna love you like I’m gonna lose you Kylie Truax died Aug. 3. She will be missed by her family, friends and at Salty Church. COMMUNITY EDITOR

A

t just 14 years old, Kylie Truax had a voice that her friends and family described as that of a “1970s blues singer.” While at first she was too shy to sing in front of other people, winning first place in her school’s talent show in sixth-grade gave her the confidence to show off her pipes. And once she found her voice, she never stopped singing. “Right before she went out there, we prayed for courage,” said her mother, Stacie Truax. “And she came out with courage of a lion. She was unstoppable. After that, she’d sing her heart out to anyone who would listen.” It was her mother who first introduced her to singer Meghan Trainor and her core message about being yourself. From then on, she was Kylie Truax’s favorite artist, and she loved singing her song, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” — which is about loving someone like you’re about to lose them — around the house. “I was really sick with cancer in 2009, and I’m better now, but when she was first singing that song, I told her I wasn’t a fan of it,” Stacie Truax said. “But she said ‘Mom, when I hear that song, the first person I think of is you.’ Now it’s my favorite, and I only hear it

in her voice.” The song holds even more meaning to the family after Kylie Truax died Aug. 3 from an unexpected blood infection. She had just returned from camp and was complaining of a scratchy throat and ear ache. Her mom took her to the doctor, who diagnosed her with tonsillitis and prescribed her with amoxicillin, but the next day, she said she had no energy and her arms and legs hurt. Her father took her to Florida Hospital Oceanside, where it was determined she had low blood pressure and had a sepsis — a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. While the diagnosis was serious, the doctors and her family believed that she soon make a full recovery. “She said she couldn’t breathe, and then she just left us,” her mother said. “They still don’t know what happened. She was a premie and came into the world six weeks early. She had to spend a month in the hospital before she came home, and I remember we prayed, ‘Lord, please, we want our baby home.’ I was saying the same prayer again before she went to be with God.” Though the Truax family is still heartbroken, they are focusing on remembering everything about Kylie that made her so Kylie. had helped them. “One girl was going to commit suicide, and Kylie talked her out of it,” she said. “Another boy came up to me and said, ‘I was bullied all the time, and Kylie always stood up for me. She’d show off her biceps and tell them to leave me alone.’ Kylie never told me any of this. The only comfort we have is knowing she is with Jesus and knowing just how much she was loved and all the hearts she touched.”

And she would always bug Javan to play, and he never got annoyed with her like most teenage boys would.” “She loved animals,” her sister said. “She wanted to be a veterinarian a before she wanted to be a pop star. And she loved the pineapple, and what it symbolized. We found out after looking on her Pinterest that it meant standing tall, wearing your crown and being sweet on the inside.” “She had a way of making people feel loved,” Stacie Truax said. “If you were having a bad day and didn’t know your worth, she would tell you what she thought about you, and what Jesus thought about you.” And it was clear at her funeral what people thought of Kylie. Over 300 people attended — many whom Stacie Truax did not know — and almost everyone had a story to share about how Kylie

When she returned, the purse was gone. Surveillance video showed the suspect, an employee, take the purse. Another employee found the purse in a trash can on the third floor. The victim said it was missing $800. Surveillance video also showed the suspect placing the purse in the trash can. In a post-Miranda interview, the suspect admitted to taking the purse. He said he took it because he thought it belonged to an employee. Asked why he put the purse in a trash can, the suspect said he was going to give it to someone on the third floor, but when she wasn’t there, he put it in the trash. Asked why he didn’t turn it in to the front desk, he said he didn’t have time because he had to pick up his check and leave. Asked why he didn’t turn the purse in when he picked up his check, he said he didn’t have time. He was arrested for grand theft.

EMAIL SCAM 11:48 a.m. — First block of Park Terrace Fraud. The victim was corresponding by email with someone he thought was from Microsoft. The suspect would remotely fix things on his computer and then ask the victim to send iTunes gift cards by email. Over a week’s time, he was scammed out of $1,300. WILD CHASE 10:35 p.m. — West Granada Boulevard and North Beach Street. Fleeing Vehicle. The officer was stopped at a red light a few cars behind two cars that were sideby-side at the light. When the light turned green, the two cars took off speeding. They headed east on West Granada Boulevard, and by the time they got from U.S. 1 to Beach Street, they were going 80 mph, according to the officer’s estimate. The officer activated his lights, and the cars increased their speed up the Granada Bridge. After crossing it, both cars turned onto South Halifax Drive and then turned left on Bosarvey Drive. Meanwhile, an officer was parked on Seton Trail waiting for a trailer to be moved from blocking the road. One of the two speeding cars turned south on Seton Trail but had to pull over because the trailer blocked the road. The driver got out of the car and ran. One of the officers drove onto Seton Trail and saw the suspect emerge from a yard. He was sweating and wet from running through rain-soaked bushes. The suspect had a key that matched the car left on Seton Trail. The key was able to start the car, and the suspect was arrested.

amiliar with the biblical story of Jacob and Esau in the book of Genesis? Jacob steals the birthright, and he later becomes the father of the nation of Israel? Check out some of these parallels between that story and the fraternal twins on the Ormond Pride: Wade and Chance Schaack. It’s a Christian family, and they love the comparison. Like Esau, Wade was born first, by three minutes. He also has red hair and loves the outdoors with their father, Brian. Chance, on the other hand, loves to keep company inside with his mother, Paula, learning how to cook. So far, he can only boil hot dogs, which he thinks is “pretty sad,” though he’s only 10 years old. Similar to the biblical twins, Wade and Chance occasionally get along. Wade likes when Chance is consumed with his laptop, so “he stays out of my way.” But like a good brother, he offers Chance his bed, when nightmares cause Chance to wake him in the middle of the night. “Then they fight for room, because two dogs also sleep in the bed,” their mother said. Paula Schaack chose to give them unrelated names in fear that they

would often get confused when called by a similar name. Chance says that Wade always protect him, and he wants to learn how to make bacon, eggs, biscuits and other foods like his big brother. But, he wishes Wade wouldn’t steal his friends’ attention at their house with his “dumb comedy.” The two, however, manage to get along fine when building anything with mechanical Legos, and now they’re delighting in playing football together for the first time.

emember Buzz Porter Sr., the 80-year-old track wonder who has won over 1,000 medals? Well, he continued his successful ways in recent competition, at the USA Masters Track Meet in Greensboro, North Carolina, and at the National Decathlon Championship in Shoreline, Washington. In the Masters, he won the pentathlon, high jump, triple jump, steeplechase, 80- and 200-meter hurdles, and the pole vault. Porter attained All-American honors in most events, and he finished with better times and distances than some of the men younger age groups. In Washington for the decathlon championships, Porter placed second overall in his age group. A total of 40 men ranging from 30 to 91 years old competed, and he scored more points than 16 of them. If there was ever an elderly athlete to look up to, Porter would definitely be the one. Though he does a ton of winning for himself, Porter has also paid it forward by assisting other athletes to reach their goals. One in particular is James Armor, a former Spruce Creek track runner. Armor had no college scholarship offers, until Buzz brought him to his headquarters, Bicentennial Park. “Buzz dropped my 5K personal best by almost a minute and lowered my 800-meter PR some seconds in less than a few months,” Armor said. “All this was done by running around a local baseball field park with his stopwatch.” After months of waking up at 6 a.m. to train with Porter, Armor competed in a college-level race and did so well, Embry-Riddle offered him a scholarship. “All I did was listen to Buzz,” Armor added. “He’s the one who manifested that scholarship. He sacrificed so much time for another’s dream. Buzz never complained and never once even let me speak of any form of payments.” In 2014, Armor chose to leave college and return home to help his ill sister who eventually died that summer. He still trains and has aspirations of returning to the course to pay back the one who sacrificed for him. “I hope I can add to his achievements,” Armor said, “because any of my running achievements are his as well.”

There was a happy reunion at the Halifax Humane Society Thrift Store Adoption Event on Aug. 13. Kati Curry and Jadyn Pescatore had wanted a puppy for long time, and they found a dog at the Halifax Humane Society on Aug.

12. He was not a puppy, but they knew he was the one they wanted. “We fell in love,” Curry said. After getting the approval to get the dog from Kati’s dad, they went back the next day. But, to their disappointment, Ringo was gone. The staff at HHS said that Ringo was at the Adoption Event, and they hurried to see if he was still there. “We had to have him,” Curry said. Fortunately, Ringo was waiting, and the family adopted him. Also happy at the event was Aileen Martin, of Ormond Beach, who adopted Mojo, a 4-week-old black kitten. “She walked right up to me and wanted to play,” Martin said. Meg Evans, thrift store manager, said the store at 333 W. Granada Blvd. has done well since moving to the spot on the west end of the plaza (behind ACE Hardware) from Holly Hill three years ago, showing a 30% increase in sales. There’s a wide variety of donated items in the 5,000-square-foot store. “We say if you can’t find it, you don’t need it,” she said.

Wendy Patrick buys popsicles for the family from Schmancy Popsicles. Patrick said she supports local business because her family operates a local business, Patrick Construction.

One of the more popular items is furniture. She said artistic people in the area like to refinish or paint furniture and use it for a different purpose. Also at the event was Joseph Cofer, of Schmancy Popsicles. The teenage businessman is busier than ever. He had worked an earlier event that day, a 5K race at Father Lopez High School. Meanwhile, his mother, Kellie, was selling popsicles at a swim meet, raising money for the Ormond Beach YMCA.

OVER 400 PARTICIPANTS RAISE $6,500 FOR VETERANS BY RUNNING 0.0K AT ORMOND BREWING Over 400 braved the heat and strength required to run a 0.0K in an effort to raise money for the Veterans Support Fund. The race’s success was not measured by the skills of its participants, but by the $6,500 raised to make Christmas 2016 special for the residents at the Emory L. Bennett Veterans Nursing Home.

The event was held Aug. 13 at Ormond Brewing Company, which thanked the following partners in a Facebook post: Runners High Race Management, Daytona Beverage, Charles Schwab, the Wrigley Company, Cunningham Oil, Ormond Beach Brewing, Team Red, White and Blue, Molo’s Miami Grill and Vitamina”T” Tacos.

ORMOND LIONS CLUB DONATES MEGAPHONE TO ROWING TEAM FOR VISUALLY DISABLED The Ormond Beach Lions Club recently donated a batteryoperated megaphone to the Halifax Rowing Association’s Adaptive Rowing Program, a program for persons with visual or physical limitations. Because most program participants are blind, the megaphone is used to give

instructions to participants while rowing on the Halifax River, often from a distance. The megaphone gives Coach Bob Van Twyver more flexibility in administering the program, and helps assure participants’ safety. Ann Marie Medlar, an Ormond Beach Lions Club

The Planning Board recommended approval Aug. 11 of rezoning a small triangle of land just west of the Church of the Holy Child, 1225 W. Granada Blvd., as requested by Paul Holub of Holub Development Co., of Ormond Beach. Holub bought the land from the church. Holub owns the lot at 1245 W. Granada Blvd., to the west of the lot. According to a city staff report, the irregular size of that lot has hindered commercial development. With the land from the church, Holub’s property is now “squared off” and better suited to commercial development. The church land is zoned “public institutional” and Holub seeks to have it zoned to the same designation as the 1245 W. Granada Blvd. lot, which is “residential, office, retail.” Holub was not at the Planning Board meeting, but a representative, Jeff Sweet, said that Holub did not have anything specific in mind for development. There is currently a house on the property. Final approval of rezoning will be up to the City Commission.

bachelors in Biblical studies, masters and doctorates in practical theology, ordination in ministry, etc. Dr. Dennis Muench, president, said local pastors also get continuing education. The school, which has been in Ormond Beach for six years, is held at Tomoka Counseling Center at Tomoka Christian Church, but is not affiliated with the church. The Maranatha home office is in Fort Lauderdale. An open house for the next class will be in September, and classes will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays.

Students can study online, but Muench said there are advantages to attending the classes in person, and that they are “a lot of fun.” The school is recognized by the Florida Department of Education and accredited by the Association of Independent Christian Colleges and Seminaries. Sheriff urges school traffic safety With school starting at the county’s 70 public schools,

Volusia Schools and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are asking motorists and students to be alert and aware. “We need to look out for our children,” Sheriff Ben Johnson said. “Please slow down, eliminate the distractions and help us ensure our young people have a safe environment to get to school and back home every day.” Motorists should be prepared to slow down at school zones and keep an eye out for unpredictable children. When children or crossing guards are in a crosswalk, drivers must stop at the marked stop line, accord-

ing to a Sheriff’s Office press release. It is illegal to pass a school bus on an undivided roadway if the vehicle is stopped to load or unload children. If the highway is divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five-feet wide, drivers do not have to stop if moving in the opposite direction of the bus. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office offers a Teen Driving Challenge that trains teenage drivers to avoid deadly traffic crashes. For more information about this eight-hour course, visit volusiasheriff.org.

Pathways Elementary students start school year with a SMILE EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

S

ummer is officially over, and while we half expected to see some solemn young faces Aug. 15 as students walked back onto campus, we’re happy to report that there were more smiles than frowns at Pathways Elementary. “Everything!” 10-year-old Summer Moore answered after being asked what she was most excited about for fifth-grade. “I want to learn math and meet new friends.” And Moore wasn’t alone in her excitement. While some students were more nervous than others about returning, many ran to the classrooms eager to get started. “Everyone is excited about a new school year,” said Pathways Elementary Principal Jason Watson. “It’s going to be a great year.”

Fredrica Jacobson walked a nervous Ivy and excited Alexandra to their class.

The new Villari’s Martial Arts location in Palm Coast.

Villari’s Martial Arts opening location in Palm Coast The Ormond Beach-based martial arts studio is expanding their unique program to another community. The school is hoping to reach more children by opening a new location in Palm Coast. Located at 515 Palm Coast Parkway SW, Villari’s Martial Arts of Palm Coast is currently set to open Aug. 23. It will offer the same programming as the Ormond Beach location. For more information, like Villari’s Martial of Palm Coast on Facebook.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Villari’s Martial Arts is more than just a martial arts school — it’s a character development program. Owner Dave Grabner said the school’s programming teaches children self control, respect and discipline. “It’s not just teaching kids how to kick and punch,” he said, “but developing a child as a whole.”

Denny Lyons, who worked as a real estate agent in the area in the 1990s, has returned to Ormond Beach and joined Exit Beach Realty, 1650 Ocean Shore Blvd. After 13 years in the busy Los Angeles area, Lyons said he’s happy to be back. In Los Angeles, he said, it could take an hour to go two miles to show a house because of the heavy traffic. “This is paradise,” he said. “This is such a relief. It’s less stressful.” Lyons has stories from L.A., such as the time he went to the wrong condominium and the person opening the door was Don Knotts. He also helped the singer Pink (Alecia Moore) find a rental home near her recording studio. He described her as being down to earth and cool. He’s excited to be back in the local real estate market where prices are going up. But there is still a huge price differential between this area and Southern California, and he plans to market to contacts he has on the West Coast.

Interns aid humane society Security First Insurance Company’s intern class of 2016 collected and donated money and several months’ worth of supplies including food, bedding and leashes to the Halifax Humane Society. The group of 13 interns chose a nonprofit organization and executed an internal, three-week giving campaign culminating in the donation. Frank Molinario, director of Human Resources, said the company challenged the interns to raise funds for a nonprofit, and left the rest to them. “By exposing our interns to practical, resume-building experience and offering them insight into local nonprofits, our hope is that they will pursue careers and give of their time and talent in the state of Florida upon graduation,” he said in a press release. “Social responsibility is a core tenet of our company culture.” Amber Marcoux, community outreach director of the Halifax Humane Society, said the organization was “honored to have been chosen to be the recipient of the hard work, time and dedication of this skilled and motivated group of young professionals and their mentors.” Visit halifaxhumanesociety. org and securityfirstflorida.com.
