YOUR TOWN SIGNATURE HEALTH RESIDENTS GET A NEW KARAOKE MACHINE The karaoke machine at Signature Health Care was more than just a sight for sore eyes — it was inoperable. And with karaoke being one of the residents' favorite pastimes, they were disappointed to have to end the activity. But thanks to an article about their request for a new machine in the Ormond Beach Observer, a donation was made and the residents now have a new karaoke machine to enjoy every Friday. Anonymous little girl replaces stolen teddy EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

After a teddy bear was stolen out of a lawn, a little girl donated her favorite teddy as a replacement.

For the past week, the corner of the Gibel family's lawn has been usually empty, after the neighborhood's favorite teddy bear was stolen in the middle of the night. But thanks to a sweet gesture from a little girl only known as "Anna," that corner will be home to a dressed up teddy once again. "We noticed that your bear was missing and we love driving by to see it," a note left with a very large teddy bear read. "This bear was given to me when I was a babby (original spelling) and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did." A neighbor of Joyce Gibel's found Anna's bear, and called to let her know that they no longer had to buy a new one.

When some American Indian tribes returned from battle, they would stop before they got back to the village and spend a couple of days preparing. This is in contrast to modern warriors. “We arrive by airplane directly from the battlefield,” said Dean Ehly, a social worker who spoke at a PTSD Awareness event on July 23 at Ormond Beach Regional Library. The event was organized by Ormond Strong, the group led by Debbie Kruck-Forrester that walked the Granada Bridge for a year to honor deployed servicemen and now conducts a variety of events to help veterans. “Debbie started a movement,” Ehly said. “She has created a moral community by walking the Granada Bridge.”

The teddy bear was last seen dressed in swimwear attire for the summer.

Bikini-wearing teddy bear replaced "My neighbor is going to put the teddy bear in the garage, and we’ll put it out when we get back," Gibel said. "We're going to laminate the letter and put it with the bear. We have no idea who Anna is." The original bear — who was last seen in a black bikini with sunglasses and a rainbow umbrella — was stolen July 16 sometime after Gibel got home from her job at Halifax Health. The bear was tied to a wooden bench, which got busted up when the bear was taken. The family bought the bear when they purchased the house about 14 months ago. The house used to be known as the "Helicopter House," for the larger helicopter the original owner had outside. Gibel said they wanted to continue the tradition, but didn't have enough money to purchase the helicopter, so they became the teddy bear house instead. "We started with a Halloween outfit," she said. "Now she has Super Bowl outfits, Christmas,

PTSD Awareness FROM PAGE 1A

Ehly said he works with people who see horrific things happen and then store them away. Even modern warfare with drones can create PTSD. He said a serviceman operating a drone “from two continents away” can see his fellow servicemen killed and can’t do anything about it. He said war not only causes PTSD, but also what he called moral injury, when a sense of right and wrong is violated. Ehly gives presentations to groups about PTSD and can be reached at Dean.Ehly@va.gov. In addition to veterans, the event recognized first responders as often suffering from PTSD. Heather Post, who is running for County Council, is a former Sheriff’s deputy and helped Kruck-Forrester with the event by bringing in Anastasia Miller, who has studied PTSD as it relates to first responders. “Traffic accidents, suicides, child abuse — these are everyday events for first responders,” Miller said. Also speaking was Joe DiBlasi, of Ormond Beach, a Vietnam War veteran. He said the servicemen he knew don’t want to show their pain. “We were tough,” he said. “We were Army guys.” He said the best way for veterans to get help is to talk to other vets. HELP AVAILABLE

T

he latest building to receive a “new-old” look by developer Bill Jones will be the Buschman Building, across West Granada Boulevard from City

Hall. Jones is known for paying attention to historic detail in his renovations, which include Rose Villa, Grind Gastropub, Frappes North, Thirty One on the Boulevard and the plaza that includes Dunn’s Attic. The Historic Landmark Preservation Board gave unanimous approval to a Certificate of Appropriateness for an alternation planned by Jones, the building’s owner. Jones plans to add decorative clay tile as an architectural accent to portions of the front exterior. The address of the Buschman Building is 15-23 W. Granada Blvd., because it shares an address with the building next door that houses Cakery Creation. Both buildings were built in the early 1900s. The Buschman building, which has “1925-Buschman” at the top, is on the Ormond Beach Historic Landmarks list. A certificate of appropriateness is required for

any alternation that will change the exterior of a historic building in the city. HISTORICALLY CORRECT

The building has never had tile, but Jones plans to use a design similar to that used in the early 1900s and the historic board approved. “It’s not authentic to the existing building but period correct and will improve the appearance of that building and overall downtown,” said board Chairman Dr. Philip Shapiro. Dorian Burt, assistant to Jones, said the Buschman Building was in disrepair when Jones purchased it 10 years ago. It was restored at considerable expense, she said, such as installing authentic glass from the time period in the windows on the second floor as opposed to more cost-efficient glass of the present. She said the tiles now planned were designed by California Pottery, which deals with historic appliqués. Jones is enthusiastic about the project. “I get goose bumps thinking about it,” he told the historic board. “I love the downtown and will do all I can to improve it.”

Decorative clay tile will be installed underneath the windows, including those on the first floor, and will accent the top of the building.

COFFEE SHOP COMING

After the board meeting, Jones said he was going to “get on the phone” right away and order the tiles. He said he hopes to slow down traffic on Granada Boulevard by adding a little more beauty so people will look at their surroundings. “People will slow down to see what’s there,” he said. He said his son recently found a newspaper article from 1986, about the danger of Granada Boulevard deteriorating. It was interesting, he said, because that was when he got started renovating buildings on the city’s main street. The tenant in the Buschman Building is Jones’ daughter, Victoria, who owns Frame of Mind, a framing and art studio. She said she plans to add a coffee shop in a corner of the building in the next few months. The Planning Department recently approved changes at two other historic buildings in the city, and determined that a certificate of appropriateness was not needed in either case. The Casements is going to receive exterior accent lighting, to be lit for events, and landscaping will be improved at the historic firehouse, 160 E. Granada Blvd.

“I get goosebumps thinking about it.” BILL JONES, developer

The event also publicized help that is available, such as the Veteran Affairs crisis line, 800-2738255. The Florida Veterans Foundation sponsors veterans for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for traumatic brain injury and PTSD, and the website is floridaveteransfoundation.org. Tom Wright, of New Smyrna Beach, was one of the speakers and said he has paid for HBOT for several veterans. He can be reached at tom@laman.com. Vet Center, 1620 Mason Ave., Suite C, Daytona Beach, offers counseling and can be reached at 877-WAR-VETS. A new initiative was started by Chad Velden, who was a Naval hospital corpsman in Iraq for two tours. He has formed Volusia Vets, geared to those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and has 250 members. He said there’s a gap between the younger veterans and those from earlier wars. “I want it to be a brotherhood,” he said. VolusiaVets is on Facebook and he can be reached at volusiavets@ hotmail.com.

A speaker at the event said even modern drone warfare can cause PTSD. A drone operator thousands of miles away can see his fellow servicemen killed.

A tree trimmer, Thurman Hull, 57, fell to his death while trimming a palm tree about 2:15 p.m. on July 22, according to a city spokeswoman. Fire, police and EVAC units responded to 1930 W. Granada Blvd. after reports of a fall with injuries. Hull was working for Darryl Hamilton Tree Service at the rear of Tymber Creek Plaza and had climbed 30 feet up a ladder on the tree. The ladder slipped off the tree, and Hull fell to the ground. His head hit a metal structure within a fenced-in area which contains a sewer pump, according to the police incident report. The spokeswoman said he had unhooked his safety harness because he had diffilculty with it. He was not responsive and never gained consciousness before being pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner transported the deceased man. There were several witnesses and OSHA later arrived.

suit, but all of the disputes will be resolved if the union membership ratifies the contract. The School Board also reached agreement with Volusia Educational Support Association, clerical workers, and Volusia Educational Support Association, who are paraprofessionals. One problem in negotiations was the amount the School Board pays toward insurance premiums, and the two sides were finally able to reach a compromise of $531 per month. “This deal achieves our goal of reining in our health insurance costs while providing deserving raises to our hard working employees,” said Superintendent Tom Russell. He called it a wonderful start to the upcoming school year. Andrew Spar, president of the VTO, also expressed satisfaction. “We appreciate the hard work of everyone involved,” he said. “We believe this is a fair compromise and gives employees several options to keep good medical coverage while benefiting from a decent pay increase.” For teachers, the deal calls for increasing beginning teacher pay by $1,000, and average teacher raises of 4.25% for the 20162017 school year and 2.5% for the 2017-2018 school year. For VESA and AFSCME, the deal calls for average raises of 6.25% for the 2016-2017 school year and 2.5% for the 2017-2018 school year. Returning teachers get a $500 bonus and returning VESA and AFSCME workers get $300. No raises would be awarded for the 2015-2016 school year. There are additional, smaller, raises for VESA and AFSCME depending on job level.

When you’re here, you’re home I may have stolen that from “Parks and Rec.”

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

This past week I’ve had this same conversation with about seven different people: “Ormond Beach is great. Everyone should live here.” That, or some variation, seems to be the resounding vibe that we’re sending out into the world. Maybe it’s the chaos happening everywhere else that’s making us very appreciative of what we have — or maybe it’s just something in the water. Either way, I’d argue most of the people who live in Ormond, want to live in Ormond. As a few of you may know, I’m not from here (cue gasps). I was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and moved around so much that I often told people the Blackwoods were “movers,

not stayers.” My case of FOMO (fear of missing out) started very, very young. When I was about 9 years old, we landed in DeBary, where I did most of my growing up. It’s not a terrible place, but something about it never made me feel like I belonged there. The itch to go somewhere prettier and new kept me looking ahead and hardly ever paying attention to the present. I also had a serious case of “head in the clouds” syndrome. Apparently it’s very common among teenagers. That mindset made it nearly impossible for me to be content. I spent what felt like forever bouncing around to different apartments and cities always believing that the next one would be the great adventure I’d been waiting for. Let’s just say, it eventually got old and I wanted to go home. When I did finally return to DeBary, I didn’t get that feeling that I thought I’d have. Everything was the same, including that sense that I

wasn’t meant to be there. A girl who was always itching to get out of town, was trying to find somewhere where to stay. After I graduated college, I was left trying to pick between two equally terrifying jobs: an editor of a paper in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming, and a writer for a news service in Alaska, where the only living option available was on a tugboat I’d have to clean. So when Managing Editor Brian McMillan called me for an interview with the Ormond Beach Observer, I immediately thought to myself: “Yes. This is it.” And thank God I was right. I’ve been living in Ormond for two years now and I feel like I can finally say that I’m home. This town and the people who live in it make it so that I love getting out and going places, and when I do get the itch to leave town, I always want to come back. And I’m not alone. Pretty much everyone from my old hometown that’s visited has told me how much they love Ormond and how nice the people are. One of them was so impressed, that she moved here a few weeks ago (I should

get recognition of that, right?) I’ve lived in cities big and small, and I can tell you for a fact that home is a rare feeling. It takes the right amount of effort, time and genuine people. Thankfully I’ve found all three of those necessary elements within our city limits. This is my home. This is where I’ve become the person that I dreamt of being when I was just a little girl with too many notebooks and a lot of questions. This is where I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had that opened their arms to me without any hesitation. This is where I’ve found both of my fur babies who taught me that I can totally take care of things without killing them (except plants). Also I’m totally not crying right now. So before you complain about your neighbors being too close or seeing everyone and their mother at the grocery store, think about what life would be like if you lived in a town where nobody knew you. Because personally, I think that’d be way too boring.

The officer saw the suspect in the grassy area near a ramp for a long period of time. In the past, panhandlers and solicitors held up signs at the intersection but an ordinance was passed making it illegal. The suspect was holding his hand out whenever a car approached. The officer asked to see his hand, and the suspect reluctantly showed it. His hand had “Help?” written on it with a thick marker. He had been arrested several times for solicitation in that area. He was arrested and taken to jail.

SPORTS Run, Buzz, run! Buzz Porter began running at 15 years old and continues 65 years later.

Parental guidance I have decided to keep my nephew away from the game of football.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

B

uzz Porter began his illustrious running career similar to that of movie character Forrest Gump’s. Collecting on a paper route, neighborhood bullies tried to chase him down to take his pocket of change, but he was just too fast. It was around that time Porter believed he possessed a running gift, though he had never formally trained. His house was located a mile away from his school, so he would always run two miles a day. His life changed when he saw a track runner break the school’s mile record to which he responded, “I can run faster than that.” Once the coach caught word of this nontrack runner’s confident statement, he challenged him, and Porter beat the new record by 16 seconds the following day. He would then go on to run for the school and win a district championship. After a successful high school career (he was selected to its Hall of Fame a couple years ago), Porter joined Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky, as a walkon. Although most of the crosscountry team ran on scholarship, Porter became the No. 1 man, setting course records almost everywhere the team competed. From there, he joined the Marines for three years and won running events while serving. And, for the last several decades, he’s competed in dozens of events around the country, winning enough events to fill two rooms with ribbons, medals, plaques and trophies. “My friend Betty’s (Bullington) grandson tried counting them all one day,” Porter said, “but, once he got to 600, he said, ‘I’m done with this.’ I’m pretty sure there are over 1,000 awards.” So, what has made Porter train at least four days a week for the past 65 years? “Winning more gold medals.” “All of my life, I considered myself nothing — a nobody,” he said. “But, when I walk onto a track, some people pick up their duffel bag and go home. I’d say, ‘Where are you going?’ They’d say, ‘Well, with you here, nobody can win.’ On the track, I can be somebody.” The only time Porter didn’t compete was from 2000-2008, when he ended a failed relationship. But after meeting Betty in 2007, he returned to shape — while helping her recover from knee surgery — and began competing and winning again in 2008. This week he’s heading to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the USA Master’s Games, and next week he will make his longest trip yet for the USATF National Masters Combined Events Championships in

Porter still skies the hurdles, which he did several decades ago to own world records.

“No matter where I finish in a race, I’m still ahead of that guy who’s laying on the couch, pattin’ that beer belly.” BUZZ PORTER

Seattle, Washington. When asked if he ever plans to quit, Porter quickly responded with a stern “Never.” “No matter where I finish in a race,” he said, “I’m still ahead of that guy who’s laying on the couch, pattin’ that beer belly.” And, even when he eventually dies, Porter wants everyone to remember his competitive nature by reading his tombstone that will say: “You’re still behind me.”

Buzz Porter has already won 21 medals this year.

DID YOU KNOW? Buzz Porter owns four world track records, which can never be broken, now that those age groups no longer compete at the same lengths.

or the first time in my life, I became a guardian when I took in my nephew, Malik Cooper, 13, last July. Coming from a horrible environment, Malik didn’t like to think, he didn’t have any drive and he wasn’t concerned about his future. It was probably six months ago, when I asked if he had developed a life goal, and he finally said, “I want to play football for Florida State (University).” “Wow!” I thought. “This kid finally has a dream.” I was as proud as a first-time father who hears his baby say, “Da-da.” But, as months have gone by, and I continue to study up on football injuries, I’ve decided to halt his dream — at least for the near future. Honestly, it pains me to do so, but I believe I’m making the right decision for his overall well-being. I’ve seen him play, and I have no doubt he could eventually make a college roster, but, knowing the dangers of football, I’m afraid I can’t take that chance. Is it possible Malik could navigate through high school, college and potentially the NFL without any major head trauma or serious injuries that could alter his life? Sure. But, if there are other options for him to succeed in life, I’ll feel more comfortable leading him toward those routes, which I am. Malik has taken a liking to basketball, since playing in the Upwards league, where he led his team in rebounding. He’s made great strides in every aspect of the game. At any time on the court, Malik will be the most naturally gifted athlete, and it shows through his rebounding, defense and hustle. Parents and guardians across the nation are struggling with this same decision, and I understand both conclusions. Soon, I will be publishing an article that will describe the good and bad of football, and right now, I’m leaning toward the latter. As Malik continues to grow and gain more size, I may change my mind, but I hope he continues to develop his love for basketball, because I don’t think I’ll be letting up any time soon. Are you struggling with this decision? I’d love to hear any feedback from sports parents. Email jeff@palmcoastobserver. com.

After years of using porta-potties, having no storage room for equipment, no shelter from storms or no shade for parents during practices, the Ormond Beach Pride now has its very own Pride Field House, which officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, July 25. “We are very lucky to have received such a great facility out here,” said Jennifer Ladd, one of the Pride’s board members. “The equipment will remain healthy for our children, being stored in a temperature-controlled climate, and to have restrooms and everything in one location makes it a lot easier for the coaches.” Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District provided a grant worth nearly $200,000 to the building fund, and the city of Ormond Beach added another hundred grand for electricity and other amenities. Pride volunteers, kids and parents worked many hours at events

at the race track, Wal-Mart, game days and others to raise the rest of the necessary support. “When it deals with children and sports, I’m all ears,” said Carl Persis, commissioner of the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District, and a former school principal. Pride players, parents and other members have already begun using the facilities for practices, and they will kick off its season with Jamborees on Saturday, Aug. 27.

“The facilities have already been huge. It’s more for practice. There are only eight games during the season, but we practice from July through November. Coaches at most high schools have told me we now have better equipment and facility than most organizations. Our board and volunteers are second to none, a first-class group, and we do it all for the kids.” BRIAN COLUBIALE, the Pride’s director

Four dollars and a bunch of loose change filled up the Ziploc bag a 9-year-old local resident put in the donation bucket for OneOrlando. Though he didn't say how long he had been saving up, Daniel Love Jr.'s last name speaks volumes to his intentions. "We wanted to come support the victims," he said, looking up at his mom. "Yep," she smiled. "That's why we're here." Over 250 people came out to Fortunato Park on July 24 to walk the Granada Bridge for the Ormond Walk for OneOrlando. Participants wore rainbow wristbands, bandanas and carried colorful balloons to raise money and show support for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting that happened over a month ago. Organizer Kyle Compton said he was overwhelmed and honored with the amount of support he found from people and businesses in the community. "I'm a member of the gay community, and it really hit really hard," he said. "I don't go to nightclubs anymore, but if I was their age would have been there. This kind of thing is usually done in bigger cities, but this is where I've chosen to make my home. So I wanted to bring everyone together." Mayor Ed Kelley was among the many attendees. "Thank you for being here and showing love for each other," he said. "Hug someone you don't know, and spread the love from Ormond beach."

“She can do a lot of things,” 6-year-old Ada Oler said while stroking the elephant’s nose. “The only thing she can’t do is win a staring contest.” Ellie, the traveling empathybuilding, animatronic elephant, blinks every 10 seconds or so, making Oler the reigning staring contest champ. But the elephant wasn’t there to win, she was there to teach Ormond Beach kids about how they can help animals suffering in the circus. A part of PETA Kids, Ellie teaches young people

to have empathy and respect for all living beings — an important lesson to learn when children are faced with bullies. The presentation was given to the kids at Enviro Camp on July 26 at the Environmental Discovery Center. “This is our Into the Wild week, and we’re teaching kids about endangered species, and different animals,” said Siobhan Daly, cultural center coordinator at The Casements. “It’s important that we teach them how to be good stewards of the environment, and to learn what it is that animals really want.”
