No better job in the world

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

After seeing how much the hospice workers helped his wife in her final days, Ben Piejak wanted to do the same.

Josephine Piejak didn’t want to spend her final days in a hospital. Dying from pancreatic liver cancer, she chose to stay in her home with her three children and her husband, Benjamin Piejak — and the hospice workers who visited her daily. During those visits, Benjamin Piejak saw the difference those workers made in the final chapter of his wife’s life.

“I saw how much help they were giving her just by sitting down and talking to her,” he said. “It made her feel good.” Two years after she died in May of 2000, Piejak decided he wanted to return the favor and started volunteering at Florida Hospital Oceanside. He began his service as a transporter and had a pretty traumatic first day. “I was wheeling out a woman to her husband, and she told me she couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I was in shock, but I got her to the emergency room.” He stayed there for a few years and eventually transferred over to the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he’s remained since. “I felt like this was the place for me,” he said. “I’ve been blessed, so why not pass that on to someone else?” His day-to-day duties include bringing drinks and other comfort items to the cancer patients while they’re receiving their treatment. Piejak had a career in engineering and said he’s never received so many “thank yous,” in his life. “For a cup of coffee or juice, I get a beautiful smile,” he said. “One lady told me she loved me after I brought her a hot blanket. What other job can you go to where that happens?”

Petrina Onwuemeli speaks to the crowd at the Brenya’s Love event.

Brenya’s love NEWS EDITOR

P

etrina Onwuemeli, of Ormond Beach, said she went to the chapel in the hospital after her son was born and had a conversation with God. Her son, Brenya (pronounced BREN-yay), was born in 2001 with Trisomy 18, a genetic disorder that rendered him unable to speak or walk. Onwuemeli was told that less than 10% of those diagnosed with the disease live to see their first birthday. Doctors, nurses and others told her she should turn him over to hospice care. That’s when she went to the chapel, she said recently. “I said, ‘If I can keep him here with me, I’ll do whatever it takes to take care of him,’” she said. “And yes, it was a struggle.” During Brenya’s life, he had seizures and was on a ventilator through a tracheotomy 24 hours a day. He defied the odds and lived for 10 years. Onwuemeli was working two jobs, going through a divorce and finding her way through the social services and medical systems. She had the assistance of case workers and home health care. But, like many caregivers, she feels that she could have done more. “We had a happy life, but I always felt that as a mother I didn’t do enough,” she said. “That’s why I do what I do now. I never want anyone to forget Brenya. When I can help a family or someone in need, I feel like I’m doing it for him.” On July 16, she had a “Brenya’s Love” civic event at the Yvonne Scarlett Golden Community Center in Daytona Beach. Attendees were able to pick up care packages of medical and cleaning supplies, diapers, hygienic items, etc. Order of Eastern Star,

where she is a member, helped collect the items. She knows that supplies are a problem, because when Brenya was alive, Medicare did not pay for incontinence supplies, for example. It does now, Onwuemeli said, but too late for her and Brenya. There were also tables at the event staffed by organizations such as Halifax Urban Ministries, Easter Seals and home health agencies. Onwuemeli hopes to start a coalition of providers, so those with medically complex children will know where to turn. Onwuemeli said that, while caring for Brenya, she often suffered in silence, but now encourages others to speak out and ask for help. She was not aware of resources that were available. When she was caring for Brenya, there were no local daycares for medically complex children, but now there are. THE BIG, LITTLE SISTER

Onwuemeli’s stepfather, the Rev. Benjamin F. Smith, of DeLand, said that Brenya was a loving child who enjoyed life. He smiled a lot, especially when around his sister, Taylore Smith, who was born a year later. “She was very protective of him,” Smith said. Onwuemeli said they called Taylore the “big, little sister.” “As she got older, she could do everything for him,” she said. “It was a great relationship. It was really beautiful.” He smiled before Taylore was born, Onwuemeli said, but as she got older, she brought the smiles from Brenya much more often. Taylore said the years of taking care of Brenya were good years, even though there were “rocky” times. “He was my big brother,” she said. “He fought hard for his life. He had a beautiful heart and spirit.”

Primary election will be important for local races The primary election will be Aug. 30 and will include numerous local offices including the school board, judges, county chair, County Council district 4, sheriff, property appraiser, supervisor of elections, and municipal officials, as well as federal and state offices. Early voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 20 through 27. The Ormond Beach location will be Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St.

‘BRENYA WAS A BLESSING’

Onwuemeli grew up in a home with two professional parents, and they never wanted for anything, she said. She got married and had Brenya at age 24. “I was spoiled, really,” she said. “I never had to do anything, and then God gave me Brenya.” She had always believed in God, but sometimes struggled with faith. “Having him increased my faith and my strength,” she said. “Brenya was a blessing.” Duiring that time, she promised Brenya and Taylore that she would finish her education. After Brenya died, she got a degree, and now works as a case management worker for Halifax Urban Ministries. “I’m keeping the promises I made before Brenya passed away,” she said. She plans to have another event next year. Email brenyaslovecs@ yahoo.com.

The breakroom at the Ormond Beach Police Department Friday night had two of everything — sometimes even three. Fruit salad, crab dip, homemade cupcakes, Chick-fil-A platters and a very popular lasagna were just a few of the items available for the police officers to choose from. Because nothing says “Thank you for your service,” like a whole bunch of food. When organizer Alyssa LaBrie was asked exactly how much was donated, she could only reply, “A lot.” “On Sunday we came home and had balloons on our mailbox from our nieghbor that said ‘Thank you,’” said LaBrie, whose husband is a police officer with OBPD. “It made my husband’s whole day that someone took the time to do that.” That random act of kindness spurred LaBrie on to asking the other officers’ spouses if they’d like to help her host a surprise potluck for the department. Within a few days, it grew to include 34 local families and businesses donating food to the event. “Every single one of their calls is an act of heroism,” said Lisi Brugone, whose husband is an officer. “They almost don’t want the recognition, because for them it’s a part of their everyday life.

Officer Caleb Bruan filled up his plate with the many different foods donated from local individuals and businesses.

It’s normal. But this isn’t just a job. It takes a different kind of breed to do this. You have to be born with it.” The event was held in between the day and night shift change so all officers could take part. Officer Tom Garcia was one of the few surprised in the beginning. “It’s good to know the community is behind us,” he said.

HOMELESS, NOT NAMELESS Deputy watches out for homeless people in her area. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

A sheriff’s deputy was talking to a homeless woman seated at a picnic table on a recent sunny day at Tom Renick Park, on State Road A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea. “Be sure to drink that juice,” Deputy Donna Bowen told the woman. “That’s your electrolytes. And finish your snacks.” You would not know Christine McCaleb was homeless by her neat appearance. She looked like many of the retired women in the nearby rows of houses. “God bless you,” she told the deputy, as she looked at the package of food. Bowen told McCaleb that she would be off for a few days, but the food should be enough to hold her. McCaleb and two other homeless people were spending their day in the shaded picnic area, looking out at the beach as the sun danced on the waves.

Bowen gave all of them packages of food, purchased with her own money. “This is just something I do,” she told me, as I happened to be in the right place at the right time to witness the exchange. “I help people who are down on their luck.” There are some homeless who cause problems, and they are trespassed out of the park, but McCaleb is one that Bowen watches for. “She knows I don’t cause any problems,” McCaleb said. Bowen has come to know the homeless in Ormond-by-theSea, where she has been patrolling for seven years. They are more than statistics. That day in the park, she knew the history of each homeless individual who was there. She was first alerted to McCaleb when she was called to a nearby grocery store a couple of times when McCaleb was unable to pay. Bowen’s caring nature has taken her on mission trips with church groups to Nicarugua and other places. She tells the homeless of the food banks, etc., but many don’t want to go to the agencies. “They’d rather stay up here,” the deputy said.

BIG KID NOW

Can you stay safe without becoming totally paranoid? One active-shooter class was enough to have me browsing pricey security systems and thinking about adopting another Rottweiler.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that the modern world is scary. It seems like every week there’s a new attack, and the potential of violence is on the forefront of a lot of our minds. While I’ve been internally debating a move to the happiest country in the world, a.k.a. Denmark (JK! I would never leave you, Ormond), I figured a less drastic

Starting my future

approach would be to gain some knowledge. With active shootings hitting too close to home, I signed up for the Florida Jukido Jujitsu Academy’s first active shooter class. Though Cheif Instructor George Rego promised I wouldn’t leave with a Jason Bourne skill level, I figured I’d at least have a better idea of what to do. In the class, I learned two things: 1) I am very, very weak. 2) I should have been kidnapped by now. The seminar started with an overall idea of self-defense, and the notion that what it really boils down to is awareness. Noticing who is around you when you’re walking through a store or keeping your eyes off your phone 24/7 are key. My personal favorite was when Rego announced that women need to stop shouting “WHERE DID I PARK?” when they’re trying to find a car, which I’ve done, several times — though I completely denied it to the class. We then moved on to some self-defense moves, and I

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

everyone spilt up. With that terrifying thought in my head and hoping to whatever that I never find myself in that situation, Rego ran through an active shooter scenario four times. Each time we lost a warning, a light and even a sense of when the attack was coming. In the final run-through, he added a strobe light and music and transformed the dojo into a club of sorts. The reality of how quickly something can happen — and how long it took me to realize what was going on — sort of made me never want to leave my house. Well, at first anyway. Because see, that’s not the point of attending these seminars and learning about how to keep yourself safe. Rego made sure his class knew that he didn’t want us to be paraniod. Though violence seems to be everywhere now, it’s not a reason enough to hide out and stop living your life. We just have to adjust, be more aware and maybe learn how to get out of a wrist grab. There’s a lot in this world we can’t control, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about what we can.

partnered with Josh McPherson’s wife, Lauren, because you know, I thought I could take her. Turns out I could not. She grabbed my wrists, threw me down and almost kneed me in the face. I thought maybe her strength came from lifting their 3-month-old son, but according to Josh, she’s a former dancer, and her core alone could take us all down. Despite the huge distance between our strength and skill levels, I think we both managed to learn the basic moves of self-defense and, most importantly, to just avoid walking in parking lots at night. We then moved on to the active-shooter portion of the class, where we learned the “Run, Hide, Fight,” plan that a lot of people are adovcating for. Though running is obviously the best option out of the three, Rego wanted us to get a firsthand feel for what it felt like to fight as a group, which can be a very effective way to take a shooter down. Even if some casualities happen in the process, logically, it can save more lives than if

He has two active felony arrest warrants for failing to register and failing to properly change the address on his identification, police said. Before his Harton arrest, Harton was last known to be staying in Tomoka State Park, but checked out without reporting. He was rumored to be seeking residence at Bulow Campground in Flagler Beach.

Ormond Beach police have issued a warning about two male suspects who present themselves as water department employees to homeowners and then rob them. On July 12, two 6-foot-tall white males told a homeowner they were working with the water department and wanted to check the water quality, according to police spokesman Keith Walker. While one suspect kept the homeowner busy with the test, the other said he needed to go check the water pressure in the

The annual Cops and Joggers beach 5K run and walk fundraiser, which was held on Saturday, July 16, at Andy Romano Park, is the only time the Ormond Beach Police Department enjoys arresting members of its community. And yes, they definitely enjoy it. The first 300 runners received a flag football belt to wear during the race, and Ormond Police officers gathered along the course to try and remove as many flags from runners as possible. After the race, runners with at least one remaining flag received an “I outran the Ormond Police Department” shirt, while those with no flags remaining received an “I got busted by the Ormond Beach Police Department” shirt. “We took it very serious this year,” said Officer John Dovine. “Last year, too many people got away from us. So this year, we came back and fought hard. The goal was 200 flags.” The event raises funds for community programs put on by the OBPD, and it helps to build a friendly connection with the officers and the local citizens. During the race, not only do the officers take it seriously, but the “criminals” will do nearly anything to reach the finish line with a flag. Ormond local Lynda Latu-

Others ran into the ocean or as far out of bounds as possible. “It’s vital to have an open relationship with the community,” said Jesse Godfrey, OBPD police chief. “It does nothing but bring about positive things.”

he Flagler Bandits and Ormond Spikes 12U teams just returned from a weeklong tournament in Cooperstown, New York. Though the experience alone would’ve made for unforgettable moments, both teams created historic memories on the field. The Spikes took 14 players, three coaches and 46 friends and family members up north. They played teams from around the country and finished 17th out of 104 teams, going 5-3. The team hit 16 total home runs, and two grand slams, one each by Robert Doeing and Canyon Brown. Evan Koehler pitched a perfect game. Canyon Brown followed that performance by pitching a no-hitter. Bryce Barkalow struck out 22 batters in 12 innings. In order to reach Cooperstown, the Bandits and their parents spent the last two years hosting fundraisers of all kinds. Then they went to New York and knocked 19 balls out the park, also including two grand slams— from Austin Robinson and Carson Latham. Jaymes Pringle hit five homers, Robinson hit four, Latham had three and others had either one or two. These kids took the biggest stage they’ve ever stepped upon, and they performed at their highest level. Koehler’s perfect game is only the second in Cooperstown’s 20-year history of tournaments, and when Brown followed Koehler with a nohitter, they became one of only a few duos of pitchers to ever pitch back-to-back no hitters. For everyone who helped these ball teams make it to Cooperstown, the money was well spent. Some kids’ names will now be forever etched in the record books, and others made good on the opportunity represent their cities well.

ff Daw edit: Je Photo cr

As he gears up for his first season as the Seabreeze starting quarterback, I sat down with junior Brevin Glaze to talk about the two things he believes has kept him from his full on-the-field potential: each of his ACL injuries. Glaze has been recovering for almost two years since his last injury; getting back to 100% has not been easy. Ormond Beach Observer: ACL injuries seem to occur all the time in football. Do you look at them differently now? Brevin Glaze: When I hear about someone in this area who tears his ACL, I’ll do my best to reach out to them, because it begins a battling mental process. You start to have a lot of doubt; you can’t do the things you’re used to doing, and nothing ever feels the same. So, you start to get to want to give up.

OBO: After the second injury, what went through your mind? Glaze: After my second one, I thought it was over. My older brother had torn his left ACL twice and his right one three times, and I just had this thing in my head telling me that football or any other sport wasn’t going to work. There were nights I would cry and just pray and hope that I could get through a second ACL tear. Around the five-month mark into rehab, I really thought about quitting. OBO: How did you get through your hardest time? Glaze: My dad pushed me, and he prayed for me every night that I’d be a better athlete than before. I also found this story about Henry Jose from Missouri, who tore his ACL, MCL, meniscus, patellar tendon and flipped his knee cap around. His story proved to me that anything in this world can be done. There I was, ready to quit, and Henry Jose was never going to quit, even after some of his coaches were worried that he’d never walk again. I had that opportunity to at least walk again, so I knew it was time to work hard and do everything I could to get both of my knees healthy and well again.

After operating a home-based business since 2010, Mike Bono, of Tropical View Plantation Shutters, now has a showroom in Palm Paint and Wallpaper, 1010 S. Nova Road. Bono said he has always believed in growing one step at a time in his business, and the right step now is to have a place to display his product line. “The showroom allows homeowners, real estate agents, home builders, interior decorators and more to see exactly what type of shutters, shades and blinds there are to choose from,” he said. He offers custom-made window and door shutters in solid vinyl or hardwood that can be factory painted or stained. He also offers vertical blinds, horizontal blinds and panel track blinds in various colors and sizes. Shutters have been used on houses for hundreds of years, and Bono said they are more popular than ever because they are energy efficient and reduce heat gain and loss. Bono got into the business after noticing that shutters in
