Shawn Pruner: “You’re never going to be able to completely defend against terrorism and psychopaths. But we all have a responsibility.”

It’s been a good week for 5-yearold Lyla Bear. After weeks in the hospital with leukemia, the Ormond Beach girl and her family received the best possible news: She is now cancer free. “Thank you Jesus for healing our precious baby girl,” her mom, Amanda Bear, posted on Facebook. “She will still continue on treatment in hopes of it never returning. Our goal is to be home by the end of this weekend.” This news came a week after the Bear family received a donation from Oasis Church to send the family on a cruise and give them a check for $6,500. The church is continuing its partnership with the local childhood cancer foundation to support the 38 families in Voluisa County with children battling childhood cancer through their upcoming Better Together event, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 in Rockefeller Gardens. HOW OFTEN ARE DOGS HIT BY CARS IN VOLUSIA COUNTY?

hewy is what you would call a handful, but he gets away with it because he’s cute. His owner, Chris Walls, was slightly fooled the first time he met the pup at the Halifax Humane Society. All the dogs in the kennel started barking except for Chewy, whose calm demeanor amidst the chaos drew Walls in enough that he wanted to take Chewy for a walk. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that the dog’s real personality was revealed. “I took my phone out to try to take a photo of him,” Walls said, “and in a few moments he ate through the leash and started running off.” Chewy’s wild behavior has proven to be too much for people in the past. Only a year old, the dog has been adopted and returned twice: once for biting a child — which Walls insists was playful and nonaggressive — and once for failing to behave after $500 worth of obedience training. While the dog’s past would be enough to scare off most people, the Ormond Beach resident realized they were probably a perfect

match. Chewy is a hunting dog who needs plenty of exercise, and Walls lives and works on a large farm with tons of room and hundreds of things to chase. “I just wear him out first, and then start training him,” Walls said. “He’s real obedient, but he gets into lots of trouble.” Typically, there’s no traffic out where they live, so Walls lets his pup run free without too much worry — except for his tendency to go after poisonous snakes and jump in front of moving vehicles. In the seven months they’ve been together, Chewy has been bitten by a rattlesnake once and run over by a car three times. Walls attempted to keep Chewy from trouble by installing an electric fence and making him wear a shock collar. It worked great until, just a few days after getting it, Chewy decided to hide the shock collar’s remote. Walls still hasn’t found it, and the dog recently got himself into another car accident. After blindly running in front of a vehicle while chasing a bird, Chewy broke his leg where the femur bone connects to the hip. He’s currently limping, and, if left untreated, the leg could be permanently lame. The surgery

is expensive — about $1,200. “I have just about everything I own of value for sale right now,” he said. “From that, and thanks to the GoFundMe page, I think I have enough to cover the surgery.” Set up a little over a week ago, Walls’ friends and family have raised $1,100 so far for Chewy’s operation, which was scheduled for June 28. The dog goes with him everywhere, so those close to Walls are big fans of the pup. “Everyone loves him,” he said. “This is the first dog I’ve had of my own. Just me. And when I got him,

I honestly thought I was going to be this strong, cold dog owner. Not go to the vet unless it was absolutely necessary. But three weeks after I got him, I saw he was trying to go pee and couldn’t for like four hours. So I rushed him to the vet really fast, and they just told me he was constipated.” While Walls may not have had any plans to bond with Chewy, their similar personalities have made them basically inseparable. “We’re both annoying,” he laughed, “and always getting into trouble. He’s a good dog.”

While there are no hard statistics available, Animal Emergency Hospital Volusia Administrator Neil MacGinnis said they see one at least once a week. Usually, the dog escapes or gets loose and runs across a busy road like U.S. 1. “We’ve seen every injury,” he said. “Broken bones, crushed skulls, and internal trauma from the ones that are actually run over. Sometimes those we can’t save.” Though dogs are sometimes hard to control, MacGinnis said these situations can be prevented if the dog is kept behind a fence or on a leash, especially around busy roads and intersections. “There’s not too many accidents on neighborhood roads because people have time to stop,” he said. “No one is going 50 mph. Just try to be aware wherever you’re driving.” If your dog is hit by a car, you can take the dog to the animal hospital at 696 S. Yonge St., or call 2520206.

Brandon Sheppard and Ryan Truong were brought together in kindergarten by fate — and because their last names were side-byside in the alphabet. Friends since the beginning, the duo was destined to create culinary magic together after they met for the first time in their elementary school’s cafeteria. Fast forward a couple of decades, and they’re closing the chapter on their first food adventure and getting ready to open the next one. For the past six months, Sheppard and Truong have been running Nichiyobi at Bambú, a pop-up dining event held at the Truong family-owned Bamboo

food adventure Garden twice a month. “I grew up here,” Ryan Truong said. “I sat in the back corner every day and did my homework. I was a dishwasher, busboy, everything.” After asking his parents how he could make more money working at the restaurant, he started learning how to cook and make sushi. Even while working at Halifax Health’s nuclear medicine department, he still made time for Nichiyobi. “Food is a big part of my life,” he said. “Nichiyobi was a great way to see what people thought of our food.” As Nichiyobi’s executive chef, Truong created five-course, omakase-style meals with menus changing every month. Popular dishes included Yellowfin Lotus (tuna with avocado and chipotle aioli with shrimp tips) and “Whoaaa, Bessie” (an eight-hour short rib). BRIEFS Hundreds come out to support Ormond Brewing Company after recent robbery Ormond Beach Police are investigating a burglary that happened at the Ormond Brewing Co. on June 27 around 3:56 am. The incident was captured by security cameras, which show the suspect arrived well-prepared, with gloves, backpacks and tools. The suspect was also carrying a handgun in a hip holster, which he left at the scene, on Ormond Brewing Co. President Justin Robinson’s desk. He said the suspect broke in through the tap room’s serving window. “You immediately feel violated,” he said. “Ormond Beach is a real honest town with really good people, and it’s just a shame this guy took advantage of a small business.” Tons of those good people came out to the brewery’s Railroad District Food Truck Rally

June 28 to support the business. “Come support Ormond Brewing Company tonight,” Andrew Gall, Young Professionals Group Ormond President wrote on Facebook. “Let’s show this jerk what a great community we have.” The brewery posted photos of the suspect on their Facebook page, and it was shared over 2,336 times. “Ormond Brewing Company has the greatest friends and customers anywhere,” the company posted. “You all shared the burglary post and pics over 2,000 times, which increases the chance of this knucklehead being caught. As trying as yesterday was, we still have beer to make and a business to run so back to it we go. Tonight we would love to see all of you come out to our food truck rally and chill with us. Maybe a nice group picture that we can send to our thief once he is arrested and put in jail.” Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Criminal

Eli Michael Holley, 39, a 1995 Seabreeze High School graduate, died in a motorcycle crash in Duval County on June 24. His passenger, Renae Nichole McLaughlin, 34, of Jacksonville, was also killed. Holley moved with his family to Ormond Beach in 1994. After graduation from high school, he worked his way up to being the resident DJ at Club 600 North, which was his favorite memory, according to his brother, Tyler. Holley started a personal training business based out of Total Nutrition Gym in Daytona Beach. “He worked with so many people, whether athletes, handicapped, young, old, skinny or overweight,” Tyler Holley said “He would never judge. He always found ways to uplift and motivate his clients both physically and mentally.” Eli Holley also learned to build motocycles at Wide Open Cycles and received a sports medicine degree at Keiser College. In January, Eli moved to St. Augustine to attend Tulsa Welding School. Tyler said the principal of the school called him, and told him Eli often stayed late to perfect his trade and help others out. “A common theme with Eli,” Tyler said. Eli Holley was a fitness and motorcycle enthusiast, and his brother said that nothing cleared his mind more than a weightlifting session and a ride afterward. His favorite part of Ormond Beach was the Loop at sunset, and he had countless photos taken driving over the Granada Bridge. “Eli was my brother, but also my best friend,” Tyler Holley said. “We were inseparable. We were always known around town as the Holley Brothers. So we created HolleyBrothersInc LLC recently. Not only was it a hashtag for us to index all of our fun photos, but it was a new company where we would fix up old trucks and motorcycles.” Eli Holley rode dirt bikes as a boy and, as an adult, owned sport bikes and Harley-Davidsons. “He died doing what he loved that’s for sure,” Tyler said. “In Ormond Beach, we have wonderful memories and proud to say Ormond will always be our hometown. The people of Ormond and Daytona have really stepped up for our family and words cannot express how grateful we are for the support.” He is survived by his mother, Toni Michel Svoboda; father, Randy Holley; and brother, Tyler. The funeral is scheduled for July 2 at Lohman’s Funeral Home, 733 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach. A celebration gathering will follow. For service times, visit Lohmanfuneralhome.com.

Shawn Pruner says he understands why some people feel uneasy around guns, especially ones like the AR-15: because they don’t really know what it is. “It’s not an assault rifle,” said the Ormond Beach resident. “It’s an

Armalite rifle, and it’s hardly any different than a wood stock rifle.” The AR-15 confusion comes from the gun’s military-looking design, he said, which lead some to believe it’s an automatic weapon — a gun that fires multiple bullets per trigger pull, like a machine gun, until the trigger is released. But the AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle, firing one bullet per trigger pull. Pruner, who owns an AR-15 and has been interested in them practically his whole life, said his son Riley is more uneasy about his handgun than about the AR. “I started introducing my boys to guns when they were as young as 8,” he said. “They had to go through every step of the process.” According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, firearms were the cause of more than 30,000 deaths in 2013. But Ormond Beach resident and gun owner Shawn Pruner said guns aren’t the problem — guns landing the hands of felons and mentally unstable people are the problem. “How often do you see on the news a guy who just got out of jail and killed someone,” he said. “No one is enforcing it, and it’s frustrating for gun owners because we get targeted by gun opponents, and we’re not the ones doing anything.” Ormond Beach resident Jon Middleton said there should be a clear difference in the process of getting handguns, shotguns and rifles, because each are handled differently and require different

ammunition. “Just because I can drive a car doesn’t mean I can drive a bus or a semi-truck,” he said. “A different license is required, and that’s how it should be for guns. Depending on the type of weapon, a training course and license test should be required, including an in-depth background check. When purchasing a handgun, I had to wait three days while they do some checks. This is a good start, but needs to be taken further.” Middleton believes weapons should be classified depending on firepower and ability, and then licensed at each level, with an ability to increase to higher levels after a waiting period of two or more years. “Just because you can own a gun doesn’t mean everyone should own a gun,” he said. “In terms of the AR-15, there should be a longer waiting time, increased background checks and licensing required. Should guns be removed from this county? No. Everyone has the right to bear arms. Should everyone have access to all types of weapons? Yes and no.” Originally from the England, Middleton said the gun laws there are stricter, but would be nearly impossible to enforce in the U.S. “Weapons are only allowed for hunting and for sport, but even then they are hard to get and are monitored by authorities,” he said. “Because of this, knife crime is higher than gun crime in the UK. Because gun ownership is commonplace in the U.S., it would be impractical and nearly impossible to remove guns as it’s built into the foundation of the country and the Constitution. So that leaves two options: Keep things the same, or create and enforce stricter gun laws, but still allowing access.” Pruner said the biggest issue with guns is that no one wants to enforce the laws to keep guns out of the hands of people who could do some serious damage. Lawabiding citizens who own guns should still have the right to protect themselves, as long as they’re responsible. “You’re never going to be able to completely defend against terrorism and psychopaths,” he said. “But we all have a responsibility. When I go out and shoot animals with my friends, it’s a thing of respect between me and the animal. To take the life of a human being is something I can’t even fathom.” ACTIVE SHOOTER CLASS

Adult participants of the Florida Jukido Academy are used to random masked men bursting into the middle of the class and stimulating a mass shooting. It’s just another addition to the realistic self-defense training they’ve signed up for. Though at first those fake scenarios were every now and then, the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut made owner George Rego want to create even more training and awareness. “I’m from Connecticut,” he said. “And as a father of small

children, that hit me pretty hard. So we started doing it more within our facility. But after the shooting in Orlando, something so close to home, we had people reaching out to us. If we can help people be two or three percent safer by coming to a few hours of pretty simple self defense, let’s give it our best effort.” The academy is hosting its first Active Shooter Survival workshop July 15 to teach people how to increase their awareness, and the essentials of “Run, Hide, Fight.” Though Rego wants to keep the training simple so everyone can understand it, he wants to make sure that people realize being in that kind of situation is anything but easy. “We advocate a pretty active hide,” he said. “Meaning we’re not just hiding under a table and hoping and praying that things go well. You have on one end run and on the other end fight, but if you have no other choice but to hide, then you’re hiding until you have one of those other options. You’re hiding under a table with a fire hydrant or a screwdriver or your waiting for that door to open and

when it does, I’m ready to run.” The workshop will be split into two components: self defense skills and how to deal with an active shooter. “We want people to leave with a sense of empowerment, but no fantasies. This is an extremely difficult situation with a ton of variables. We’re trying to teach them that there are controllables and uncontrollables. And you can’t worry so much about the uncontrollables, they will be what they will be.” What Rego hopes to instill is a sense of how to maximize controllables. He also wants people to make awareness of their surroundings a habitual part of life, instead of just staring at their phones and not paying attention. “We want to think about it more as preparedness than paranoia,” he said. “When I walk out into a parking lot, I’m not paranoid that there’s a guy hiding in every bush, ready to jump me. Just like every time I get in my car to drive, I’m not paranoid I’m going to get into an accident. But I still put on my seat belt.”

After her husband’s retirement from Sundstrand, they relocated to Ormond Beach, FL where they’ve resided for 20 years. Their favorite pastime was to go out to lunch every single day and sight-see. At night, Carol’s routine was to sit outside on her front porch with her dog and watch the airplanes and stars overhead. To her, the nights were so brilliant in Florida that she did not want to miss the opportunity to enjoy them. Also, never talk during the weather broadcast as that was her favorite part of the news. Carol was an active member of the Hunter’s Ridge Women’s Club and was on the telephone committee for the entire time she resided in Florida. She just loved talking on the phone with club members. She also enjoyed water aerobics at the YMCA. Through the women’s club, water aerobics, and being a resident of Hunter’s Ridge Subdivision, she made some very dear friends in Florida. Those that met her enjoyed her smile and outgoing attitude. Carol is survived by her husband, John Halliday of Ormond Beach, Florida, one son, Keith (Lori) Halliday of Bloomington, Illinois, one daughter, Laurie (Steven) Ginn of Lakeland, Florida, and three granddaughters: Mackenzie Halliday, Krystal Halliday, and Nicole Ginn. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Bentley. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Halifax Health Hospice. Also, special thanks go out to friends near and far, and neighbors for their compassion and kindness. She very much enjoyed the phone calls, visits, cards, flowers, prepared meals, and smoothies. BIG KID NOW

ORMOND BEACH

These senior citizens really need a karaoke machine Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

One of the most popular events at Signature Healthcare was Karaoke Fridays — and it’s up to you to bring it back.

Walking through the halls of Signature Healthcare in Ormond is more like walking through a college dorm than it is a nursing home. You see colorful bulletin boards on nearly every wall with event calendars, recent accomplishments, notable residents and one framed column written by a pretty blonde reporter (sorry, had to). You hear roommates bickering with each other about not getting enough sleep due to one’s constant chatter mouth. And everyone — and I mean pretty much everyone — loves to sing karaoke. While the mess and destruction of a college dorm is obviously not present at Signature, the sense of community and desire to just have some fun definitely is.

Emily Blackwood

Mike McClelland, Andrew LaMura , Ellen Deising and Ken Krimmel are just a few of the residents who would love a karaoke machine.

So much in fact, that the facility’s activity director, Heather Hastings, started Karaoke Fridays to kick off the weekend — something I will soon be trying to convince my boss to do at our office. Favorite sing-alongs include “You Are My Sunshine,” “God Bless America,” and “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” The popular event recently ended due to the center’s karaoke machine being really old and broken. It no longer connects to the TV, and the microphone is very, uh, let’s just say “unreliable.” “We’re so sad because we

Deising and the rest of the karaoke crew at Signature Healthcare are asking the community to help purchase a new machine so they can bring back their favorite event. And they’d like it even more if you joined them in the fun and sang a few songs. “It’ll make us all happier,” Deising said. “We need it; we need the fun.”

Do you have what it takes to be a beekeeper? The Ormond Beach Environmental Discovery Center held a Honey Bee Program, on June 23, at the EDC. Beekeeper Jack Dunlop is one of six beekeepers from the Volusia Beekeepers Association who care for the hives at EDC. He shared his honey bee knowledge to attendees and was there to answer questions. For 17 years Dunlop worked for the school district. Beekeeping was something he had always wanted to do and decided to take up after retiring three years ago. One of the three hives at the EDC is open for viewing inside the center. Dunlap explained the three types of bees: a worker bee, a drone bee and the queen. Worker bees are only female bees and live 45 days. They do everything necessary to keep a hive clean, including disposing of dead bees. Drone bees are males and only live one month. They are the only ones to mate with a queen bee, and they die after mating. Although many think that queen bees run the hive, it is actually the worker bees who do. The queen bee’s sole purpose is reproduction. After mating with a drone, she can lay 2,000 eggs per day during her life span, of one to two years. Honey bees work hard to make the honey. With a little might and muscle, a beekeeper like Dunlop can jar honey within three to four days, once the honey is ready.

Winners of fourthannual Casements Camera Club Spring Exhibit announced The Casement Camera Club winners of the fourth-annual Spring Exhibit in the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center were announced June 17. Most of the students at Champion Elementary School live in Holly Hill, where there is currently no library. Though the Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach Regional Libraries are not far away, many of the students’ families don’t own cars, leaving the children without books for summer break. The school’s speech pathologist, Robin Weiss, saw the need, and decided it was the community’s responsibility to fill it. “There was a huge void,” she said. “We’re a Title I school, and a substantial number of our children live below the poverty line, making it very difficult for them to access books.” Thanks to the help of local community organizations, Weiss gathered more than 3,000 books to distribute to the 600 students before summer break began. Champions’ Parent Teacher Association helped by

donating $600 to buy $1 books straight from Scholastic, the educational publishing company. Every child got a brand new book that was all their own. “The kids were so excited,” Weiss said. “Many were running up to me and telling me their personal interests, and seeing if I had books on those topics. One of the main things I heard from the kids was, ‘Do we get to keep these?’” The overwhelming positive response from students inspired Weiss to hold the Books for Bears drive again, not once, but three times next year. She said research has proven that kids who don’t read over the summer are more likely to experience academic regression. “We want our kids to progress,” she said. “It supports overall academic success. The more you read, the better you get at it.” To donate to Weiss’ next book drive, email robinweiss2@ earthlink.net.

They play at Halifax Plantation and Riverbend, in Ormond Beach, and other courses. The chapter covers the area from Palm Coast to Edgewater. It’s just medium, and I don’t like scary,” said Danielle McMamara, 9. “My favorite is ‘Diary of A Wimpy Kid’ because it’s funny and has a lot of cool things in it,” Faith Schroeder, 8. “I really like competitive books between brothers and sisters because it’s fun to see who wins,” said Peter Knorr, 10. “’The Hungry, Hungry Catapiller,’ because I like it,” Mason Dail, 6. “I like all kinds, especially nonfiction,” said Thomas McMamara, 12. “’Lemonade War,’ because the brother puts flies in his sister’s lemonade,” said Skyler Schroeder, 11.

They played in a variety of weather conditions in the one-day event, according to Connie Karby, communications director. “It rained for a few holes, then the wind picked up and then it got hot,” she said. “It was a good test.” There were 59 players at the tournament, including 14 from the Daytona Beach chapter. ANYBODY HOME? 9:39 a.m. — 100 Block of John Anderson Drive Armed Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, Possession of Weapon by Convicted Felon. The victim reported that a male was peeking through the sliding glass doors of her sunroom. Previously, he had rung the front door bell but she did not answer. The suspect had two backpacks. He said he contacted the homeowner in search of work. In the driveway, the officer found a bicycle and a blanket with the butt of an AK-47-style rifle poking out. When asked about the rifle, he said he was returning it to a friend. When patted down, the suspect was found to be in possession of credit cards belonging to a recent burglary victim. The backpacks contained gloves, binoculars, two butcher knives and ammunition. He was found to be a convicted felon. The door bell was probably rung to see if anyone was home.

fter three consecutive tiring events, Ormond Beach locals owned the Top 25—led by Mallory Kennedy and John Dodd—in the Ormond Beach YMCA Triathlon, held on Sunday, June 26, at the Birthplace of Speed Park. The two stole the spotlight from the overall winner. Kennedy, who began three minutes after the men, overtook most of them and was able to place second overall with a 1:02:11 time. And Dodd, the 51-year-old ageless wonder, took fourth place overall. First, he swam a quarter mile in the Atlantic Ocean in 15:49—third best. Then, he biked 10 miles in 24:53 — sixth best. And to top it all off, Dodd ran a 22:20 5K — 11th best. When asked how he was able to beat most of the youngsters, he only praised Kennedy, saying, “She’s my hero; she’s out here beating men.”

OTHER TOP-25 LOCAL FINISHERS

Ken Klein finished fifth in the 10-mile bike section.

Ken Klein, eighth; Joe Ventura, ninth; Brett Robinson, 11th; Michael Cain, 13th; Garrett Klayer, 14th; Sara Dean, 18th; Troy Railsback, 19th; John Banks, 20th; Neil Nipper, 22. The Ormond Beach YMCA Triathlon was the second of three

races in the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA Triathlon Series. The series will conclude with the Port Orange YMCA Triathlon at 6 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Aunt Catfish’s on the River.

or those of us who’d say life isn’t fair because we gain five pounds from a candy bar, while others might lose three pounds after eating an entire pizza, Mallory Kennedy and John Dodd only make life more unfair, at least for me. I left the military in 2010 in the best shape of my life, able to run a 22:30 5K in the scorching Alabama summertime heat. And no, I’ve never been a distant runner, so I was always proud of my PR— until now, John and Mallory. Kennedy, along with the other females, began swimming three minutes after the men in the Ormond Beach Triathlon. But, she was able to finish in 15:12— second best overall—which put her in the Top 15 overall out of the water. She was able to maintain a top position during the 10-mile bike ride, which she completed in 25:46, before owning the competition in the 5K. After swimming a quarter mile in the Atlantic and biking for nearly a half-marathon, Kennedy finished the triathlon with a 19:53 5K, making her the only triathlete to crack 19 minutes. “This was my first triathlon in about two years,” Kennedy said, “after settling back in the area and starting a business. But, I’m always training because I enjoy it.” Yea, go ahead and rub it, Mallory, that you’re a beast. I told her how inspirational she was to me, because she set a goal I can only dream of achieving. Throughout the week, she swims with a master team, bikes with a challenging group and runs 10-14 miles in speed and tempo paces, sometimes with her dog Mable. And then there’s John. He’s in better shape at 51 than I’ve ever been. If I were able to do any of those events in his time, I’d brag about it over my next four columns. Just maybe one day I will train for three years to compete in one of these triathlons, and, if I finish — no matter the time — let me warn you: I’m going to write about it in cocky third person. That’s just how proud I’ll be. They are the true athletes.

Drowning remains the leading cause of unintended injury-related death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14.

he Ormond Beach YMCA swimming pool was filled with the happy voices of children on June 24 as they took part in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. There were plenty of staff members on hand as 86 kids, mostly from the YMCA Summer Day Camp, learned some basic lessons to help them be safer near the water. It was the world’s largest because lessons were also taking place at 500 locations in 20 countries. In 2015, there were 38,170 participants. The Ormond Beach pool was an official site for the annual event, which seeks to bring attention to the need for children to learn to swim. Drowning remains the leading cause of unintended injury-related death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14, according to a YMCA press release. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training. Ginni Hiers, district aquatic director for the YMCA, said the goal for the 30-minute session was to show some basic steps for safety around water, including how to enter the water, getting the face wet and floating.

Former Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Charles Leffler was recently promoted to commander officer of the USCGC Shrike after serving as the executive officer on board the USCGC Wrangell to patrol forces in Southwest Asia. A 2013 graduate from the Coast Guard Academy, Leffler served two years as a deck watch officer on the USCGC Munro. He was also a 2009 graduate of Spruce Creek.

Floating was part of the lesson.

There was time for fun during the lesson.

“You have no idea, Alex, what a thrill it is out there. Do you know what it feels like to go 50 mph?” Those words were spoken by Ransom Olds to Alexander Winton, both racing pioneers, about setting speed records on Ormond Beach in 1903. This bit of Ormond Beach history and more are included in “Sands of Time: Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence,” a book by William P. Lazarus, on the history of racing in the Daytona Beach area. The book was originally published as a hardcover giveaway for dignitaries in 2003, and only 1,000 were printed. Courtesy photo Now, the book has been printed in paperback, licensed by NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. Published by Bold Venture Press, it’s available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobel and at boldventurepress.com. The book covers how Ormond Beach became the “Birthplace of Speed,” including how the first races began as a promotion for the Ormond Hotel on East Granada Boulevard which was torn down in 1992 Lazarus lived in Ormond Beach from 1986 to 1998 and now lives in Daytona Beach. He was business editor of The News-Journal from 1986 to 1991 and editor of Halifax Magazine from 1992 to 2001. On July 1, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Lazarus will be at Living Legends of Auto Racing Museum, 2400 South Ridgewood Ave., South Daytona. On July 2, noon to 3 p.m., he will be at the Daytona International Speedway gift store.

“I noticed the difference in storytelling in independent movies,” she said. “Often in some of the big budget, Hollywood movies, there’s not a whole lot of story or character development — even though we can all love some mindless entertainment. I’m like everyone else in that respect, but I like to dive a little deeper.” Mason-Teague has been serving as Cinematique’s executive director for the past six years, and before that she was the volunteer board president helping the society to find and open its own theater. Though she’s leaving the theater at the end of this month, she won’t be leaving the industry. “I’m not sure what I want to do yet,” she said. “I love this area, and there are so many great arts organizations, but I would like to get a little balance back in my life and actually spend some time in Ormond Beach.” Before bringing artsy films to the community, she worked as an actress in a few independent films and as a TV host for “House to Home,” a home improvement “girl power” show on a local station. Mason-Teague said she’d love to get back into acting. She’s played everything from a therapist to an 1800s saloon girl. “I play a lot of moms and wives,” she laughed, “but it’ll be fun to explore all the options.”
