Development is planned for land at the southeast corner of Old Kings Road and West Granada Boulevard. Paul Holub, of Holub Development, and Lewis Heaster, of Lewis Heaster Properties, have purchased 8.752 acres for $1.1 million and submitted a site plan to the city. Both are Ormond Beach companies. The development, called Ormond Central, extends east to Sahai Pediatrics. On the south side, there are 100 feet of woods between the site and a residential area. The property includes one building, which is leased by Evolution Health Club and other businesses, and Heaster said it will remain in place. If approved, the wooded area will be developed with four building sites. There are no commitments from businesses and Heaster called it a “fluid” situation. “These long-term developments take years,” he said. The site plan lists a convenience/gas station, restaurant with drive-thru and a retail center, but these are only possibilities. Heaster said a sit-down restaurant or a small grocery store could also be developed. He pointed out that the prop-

erty is one of the last that can be developed on Granada Boulevard. “We lose a lot of nice restaurants to Port Orange,” he said. The project will go through a Planned Business Development, which calls for neighborhood meetings, Planning Board review and approval by the City Commission. The area is currently designated residential-officeretail, which would allow a restaurant, but approval is necessary because of the potential restaurant with drive-thru. Heaster said he believes a PBD is a good process, because it gives the community, developer and city officials a chance to work together. The partnership for this project is called Ormond Central Investors LLC.

Shannon WestonJossie went for a “beach run” with Louise Brojek.

Turtle nesting season started May 1, and that means hundreds of sea turtles will be emerging from the surf to lay eggs on the beach in the next few months, according to a statement issued by Volusia County. During nesting season, residents are required to turn off, shield or redirect lights so they don’t shine on the beach and confuse hatchlings on their trek to the ocean. For more information about Volusia County’s sea turtle program, call 238-4668 or visit volusiaseaturtles.org. For questions about lighting, call 238-4773.

Hand Avenue too fast?

MEMORIES IN THE SAND

The City Commission voted May 3 to send a letter to Volusia County in support of a proposed change in the speed limit on Hand Avenue west of Nova Road. Traveling west from Nova Road, the speed limit on Hand Avenue is 45 mph and then changes to 50 mph. It remains 50 mph west to Williamson Boulevard. In response to citizens’ requests to lower the speed limit, Volusia County Traffic Engineering commissioned a study and found that the 50 mph speed should be lowered, due to curves, driveways and a major intersection. In the letter, the city of Ormond Beach supports changing the speed limit to 45 mph for the full length west of Nova Road.

Many of the Opis Coquina Center residents hadn’t been to the beach in four or five years.

“I

never thought I’d get to do this again,” said Mildred Vanlancker as she looked over the ocean at Andy Romano Beachfront Park. “I used to live on the beach, and I’d go every day. A lot of good memories here.” Vanlancker was one of eight senior residents that the Opis Coquina Center took to the beach April 28 in an effort to help them enjoy life’s simple pleasures, like they did when they were kids. Residents fished, blew bubbles, played in the sand and tossed balls back and forth. Lisa Nelubovich, admissions director, said she many

residents and employees — herself included — were wiping tears away under their sunglasses. “One woman made sure we got pictures of her toes in the sand,” Nelubovich smiled. “This makes such a huge difference in their lives, and we just want to give back.” Opis paired up with Beach Rental Wheelchairs to give residents a chance to get in the water — something Louise Brojek will be bragging about for a while. “I’m gonna tell my roommate, Bonnie,” she said. “She’s going to be jealous.”

Vehicle crime increases

Ormond Beach police have reported an increase in vehicle burglaries and stolen vehicles. Victims are leaving valuables in plain view in their unlocked vehicles, police say. Garage door openers were left inside some burglarized vehicles and were used to enter the home. Several vehicles had a spare key left inside and were subsequently stolen. Officers are increasing their patrols and are asking for the public’s help by rolling up windows, locking doors and removing valuables.

Food drive by letter carriers The 24th-annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is set for May 14. The National Association of Letter Carriers is asking the public to place nonperishable food items in or near their mailbox on that day for pickup. A bag for food items, donated by Publix Super Markets, will be delivered to every residence prior to the drive. All food collected will be distributed to local food pantries. Last year carriers collected over 50,000 pounds of food in the Volusia and Flagler areas. Visit NALC.org.

Burton qualifies for election Mildred Jordan, Ruth Haislet, Mildred Vanlancker, Louise Brojek, Mae Allen and Dianne Plants enjoy an afternoon of sunshine.

H. Alan Burton, candidate for Volusia County Property Appraiser, was notified April 22 by the Supervisor of Elections that he met the requirement of 3,307 valid signatures for placement on the ballot for the Aug. 30 primary.

Jaecklein keeps in touch with former high school teachers, such as Leah Paul, language teacher, and Robert Hernandez, biology. “Mr. Hernandez had so much faith in me — more than I had in myself,” she said. “He always encouraged me to shoot for the stars. I never would have applied for Oxford.” She said if students have a curiosity for something, they shouldn’t let math or chemistry stop them from learning. “No matter what major you choose, there’s going to be a class that will be difficult and you shouldn’t shy away just because it’s a challenge,” she said. Hernandez remembers Jaecklein well. “Of the thousands of excellent students I’ve interacted with, I singularly remember a handful as particularly impressive,” he wrote in an email. “Eleni is permanently entrenched in that very rarified list.”

Schools now encourage studies in STEM, and Hernandez said the interest is high at Seabreeze. “My anecdotal experience has been that high school kids show interest in fields where their teachers are passionate,” he said. NEW WAY OF LEARNING

Amy Monahan, Volusia Schools resource teacher for STEM, said that higher levels of study, such as that pursued by Jaecklein, are needed in the workforce. She said Volusia Schools emphasize using STEM to build critical thinking skills and they combine the areas of study. For example, science can be used to observe a problem and engineering can be used to solve it. Monahan said teaching has changed since the 1960s, when students would ask, “Why do we have to learn this?” “It’s not ‘sit and get,’ anymore,” she said, referring to passive learning. The teaching of STEM utilizes active participation such as labs and other exercises.

Eleni Jaecklein, 22, a Seabreeze High School graduate, is one of two Florida State University graduating seniors who will be studying at the University of Oxford this fall after being named a Frost Scholar. She and Barbara Dietrick, of Castle Rock, Colorado, both major in biological sciences and will pursue a master’s degree in a year of study. Jaecklein will study integrated immunology. Jaecklein said her interest in science started when her parents took her to museums as a child and then increased in school. “I love organic chemistry,” she said. “It gives you a whole different perspective. You have to think about chemical reactions that are going on and why those things are happening.” The scholarship funds FSU students in STEM fields, which are science, technology, engineering and math. It covers 100% of university and college fees and provides a grant for living costs. Jaecklein said she “fell in love” with research while working in genetics research at FSU. She used her research to write an honors thesis. But more than study will be on her mind next year. “The whole point of studying abroad is to immerse yourself in

the community, and that’s what I intend to do,” she said. She said she wants to get involved with something she has never done before, such as archery or rowing. After Oxford, Jaecklein intends to seek a doctorate in biomedical sciences at the University of Massachusetts and after that conduct research into infectious diseases and vaccine development.

‘You sacrifice for your kids — and grandkids’

ORMOND BEACH

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.” FRIEDRICH HAYEK “Road to Serfdom,” 1944

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Leah Davis is quite possibly the cutest 6-year-old in Ormond Beach. So much so, that without my editor realizing it until it was too late, I once put her in our paper twice in one issue. What can I say? I’m a total sucker for kids who give me hugs. While I’ve always admired her parents for being so active in keeping up with her zillions of extracurriculars, I recently found out that Beth and Chris Davis are actually not her parents, but her grandparents. Though Beth Davis raised her daughter to be an independent woman, she fell into an abusive relationship that flipped the former homecoming queen’s life upside down. The one good thing for Beth that came out of her daughter’s terrible situation was little Leah. “She was just not prepared to be a mom,” Beth Davis said. “They do love Leah, but love isn’t enough. You have to be able to take care of someone, and they just weren’t capable.” Despite the fact that they were looking forward to retirement, Beth and Chris Davis say they are enjoying this second round

of parenting and going through it with a lot more patience. The grandparents said Leah’s intelligence is what makes her interested in the world around her — and what makes her fun to bring places. She’s in the gifted program for her kindergarten class at Tomoka Elementary School. “She’s very portable,” Beth Davis laughed. “Fishing, music festivals, art festivals — we take her everywhere. Not only does she get these experiences, but we get to see the world through

her eyes, and she sees everything, every detail, like a colored rock on the ground that we would just overlook.” Though Leah’s parents wanted to keep her, they didn’t meet the requirements that the Department of Children and Families gave them, and Beth and Chris Davis were left with two choices: adopt Leah, or give her to foster care. Though they had only been married for a few short years and had both just gotten all their kids out of the

house, they made the decision to adopt Leah from her daughter. “I’m 53, and my husband is 58,” Beth Davis chuckled. “We had all these grand delusions of traveling. But we gave up that life so Leah would always be in (her mother’s life). That’s what you do when you’re a parent. You sacrifice your life for your kids — and your grandkids.”

SORRY TO EAT AND RUN 3:31 a.m. — 100 Block of Williamson Boulevard Failure to Pay. A restaurant owner told police that 15 young adults had dined, and all had individual checks. Two from the party went to the cashier to pay their tab, and the remaining people walked out the door without paying. The amount not paid was $63.29. The victim said they left in three vehicles. A partial tag number was researched, and it showed a vehicle that had been recently involved in a noise complaint in Daytona Beach.

KEEP THE CHANGE 5:52 p.m. — 600 Block of South Nova Road Fraud. The suspect walked into the convenience store and paid for a bag of chips, scratch-off tickets, and $10 worth of gas with a $100 bill. The victim tried to put the bill into the safe, but the safe scans for counterfeits and would not accept it. However, the victim was not sure it was counterfeit because the safe did not accept $100 bills from time to time. The suspect took her $83 in change and left the store. The bill was found to be counterfeit and turned in as evidence.

APRIL 22

PAY FOR YOUR PRIZE 3:20 p.m. — First Block of Spring Meadows Drive Fraud. The victim said he received a call from a suspect who told him that because of his good criminal history, he had been awarded a grant for $7,800. To receive the grant, he had to

purchase an iTunes gift card for $250 and then call with the information on the card. Later, he received a call from another suspect who told him that before receiving the grant money, he would have to pay 10% for a total of $780. He refused and the call was disconnected.

APRIL 22

GRAB AND GO 9:36 p.m. — 400 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Fraud. The suspect attempted to buy a pack of cigarettes with a $20 bill. A check with a counterfeit pen showed the bill was fake, and the suspect claimed he got it from a bank. The suspect then snatched the bill and the cigarettes and ran out the door. There was a delay in making the call to police, because store policy requires the employee to notify company security before calling police.

APRIL 26

UNLUCKY DAY 11:35 a.m. — 100 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Assault and Battery. A male wearing a hat with a tag, a red Tshirt and shorts entered the store and became upset because he did not win with lottery tickets he had purchased. The victim asked him to stop cursing because a female was in the business. The suspect said he had a gun and a permit but did not indicate he had a gun. As the male exited the store, he threw a soft drink can at the victim, who had to duck.

SPORTS The real ‘sheroes’ JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Bailey Gillespy won the region high jump championship.

One last leap for the title Track athletes have narrowed down to the region’s Top 4. Next step: state meet.

A

ll of the running, jumping, vaulting, throwing and all other track activities have come down to the FHSAA Track & Field State Championships, which will be held May 6-7, at the IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton. Last week’s region meet separated the good from the great, and, while many athletes advanced to the state meet, only a few won regional championships. Champions at Father Lopez Catholic High School: Bailey Gillespy, high jump; Caroline Lydecker, 400-meter run; Nick Theriault, Julian Polviatis, Nick Ohlwein and Noah Willis. Champions at Mainland High School: Adrian Killins, 200-meter dash; Sa’da Rowley, Josilin Mobley, Danielle Hernandez, Shannon Ruane, 4x400 relay; Malcolm Reed, Alex Mack, Elijah White, Demarcus Adams, 4x400 relay and 400-meter run (Reed). Each team and individual competitor has a story that has led to this moment, and they all hope for the perfect ending atop the championship podium with a golden medallion around their neck.

Demarcus Adams, Elijah White, Alex Mack and Malcolm Reed (also the 400-meter dash champion) won the region 4x400-meter relay.

MAINLAND MAKES HISTORY — AGAIN

Last year, the Mainland Bucs won their district championship for the first time in history. This year, they repeated, and now they’ve gone a step further to win their region title for the first time in the program’s history.

STATE QUALIFIERS

Noah Willis, Nick Theriault, Julian Polviatis and Nick Ohlwein won their region 4x800-meter relay run.

Mainland: Warnell Bryant; Seabreeze: Tywon Jones and Lea Gray; Father Lopez: Ryan Atkins, the girl’s 4x100-, 400- and 800-relay teams, Mack Harris, Lexi Duckett, 4x400 relay team.

ave you ever wondered why Mother’s Day seems to be much more important than Father’s Day? Not me. Based on my life, I know exactly why. The first organized sports event I ever competed in was a middle school football game. Losing 33-0 with less than a minute in the game, I ran the ball 60 yards for a touchdown. The greatest memory from that game came from the parents who told me that my mother, Sylvia Dawsey, seemed to outrun me as she cheered louder than the rest of our supporters. That was my mother. She always tried to support and attend all of her kids’ ventures. That was never the case with my dad. I didn’t meet him until I was 23. And then there is my aunt Kathy. As early as I can remember, she cared for me as her son, and she still calls me her baby and looks after me; her son refers to me as his brother. When buying my mom anything for a mother’s event, I will always do the same for my aunt Kathy. Over the last two years, my heart has intertwined with a dear church member, Linda Buckles, who is in her 60s and a white lady (talk about cultural differences). Our church members see us as mother and son. As we near Mother’s Day, I’m thankful to meet the many sports mothers I encounter throughout the area. Seabreeze student-athlete James McCloskey’s mother, Teresa, sticks out as one of my favorites, not just because she’s ultra-supportive of her two kids, but because she exhibits that same support for all of the kids in the area, including crosstown rivals. When Mainland kids achieve success — not against Seabreeze — Teresa lets them and their parents know. When I’m covering a Mainland or Flagler Palm Coast event, I almost surely see either Erakal Goodman (FPC) or Michelle Schindelheim (Mainland) snapping pictures, not just of their kids but the entire team, and they freely share them with the team. And, last but not least, there are support mothers like Yari Chowdhury (Father Lopez) and Kelly Pickering (Matanzas) who play mom for the entire school. Whether they’re taking money at a concession stand, decorating for a banquet or cheering for their kids’ teams, Yari and Kelly are there, being moms for everyone. Mother’s Day reminds me that we’re all not blessed to have the perfect life, but most of us are blessed to be able to call these special women as moms — or “sheroes.”

Mainland volleyball coach steps down Lady Bucs volleyball coach Sandy Garner has resigned as coach, and has asked Lauren Valle, who runs her own volleyball club, to take over the program. “I thought it was a good time to make the change,” Garner

said. “It will be good for the girls to learn from someone else. I will have more time to devote to my classes, and it will give me more free time. I also plan on helping the new coach, if needed.” Garner will play on a senior women’s volleyball team in the USA Open Volleyball Championships May 27-29, at the Orlando Convention Center. There was much to celebrate about last week in the Gilbert house. First, Tom Gilbert with Team Reel Crazy headed out to fish in the first leg of the King of the Inlet and caught a 55.4-pound Wahoo that helped win the entire tournament, of 72 teams. Then, Gilbert’s sister-in law, Mikayla Laks, and the Seabreeze Lady Sandcrabs beat rival Mainland 19-12 to win the district championship and advance to the playoffs. They will play the Harmony Longhorns at 7 p.m. May 6, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The very next day, Gilbert hit a hole-in-one on a par-3 at Hole No. 5 at the Riverbend Golf Course.

MS. MONKEY FUN FACTS ABOUT LIVING IN AN ‘ANIMAL HOUSE’

n Prudence Walker does about five loads of laundry a day. n She’s very adamant about following federal, state, county and city laws and has to do a ton of research before relocating. n Her vacations are usually going on “monkey picnics” with other “monk” moms and dads. n She never screams at or spanks her monkeys when disciplining them. Monkeys are social creatures, and the more effective form of punishment is to shun them. n For enrichment, Oliver the monkey plays with kids toys and watches TV shows like “Spongebob Squarepants” and “NCIS.” n Yes, sometimes she has a monkey sleep in her bed. Some are more cuddly than others. n Oliver’s favorite meal is spaghetti with red sauce. n Oliver loves going to the Ormond Beach Farmers Market with Walker because there’s a lady there who sells Thai food and always gives him a spring roll.

Dr. Pudence Walker doesn’t have any kids of her own, but she’s spent most of her life being a mother.

rudence Walker had three goals in life: to have her own veterinary practice, to buy a farm with lots of animals on it and to have a family. A very goal-driven person, Dr. Walker completed all her goals — just maybe not in the way she thought she would. She graduated from vet school in her 40s and had her own practice while living up in Tennessee, where she also had a seven-acre farm that included her massive, but furry, family. “God gives you what you need,” she said, “just not always want you want.” After having a miscarriage, Walker was unable to have children. Despite that hardship, she’s still found other ways to be a mother. She has been a foster mom of several girls, including a pregnant teen whose baby she delivered on a bathroom floor. And, she has been a “monk mom” to as many monkeys as she can handle. Licensed by the Florida Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Walker currently owns three squirrel monkeys named Ella, Eli and Izzie, and one capuchin monkey named Oliver. She also breeds birds and hedgehogs when she can. Walker just recently moved to Ormond Beach from Tennessee and says the key to owning a monkey is knowing how to act like one. “You cannot think like a human,” she said, while grunting at 3-yearold Oliver. “And they have to know

you’re the alpha. Monkeys live in troops, and the alpha is usually male — except for me.” However, Oliver the monkey goes everywhere with Walker and he is still on the lookout for an alpha male. He’s particularly drawn to men with beards because they remind him of his own species. “When we’re out, he goes husband hunting for me,” she laughed. “He does a great job because every man he picks out is already married.” Due to health reasons, she no longer wants to continue her fulltime practice, but she is hoping to do relief work for any local veterinarians. And of course, she says there is always room for another monkey. Anyone interested can email rockytopdogs@yahoo.com.
