YOUR TOWN LASER HARP COMES BACK TO MOAS

The beloved laser harp is officially back and better than ever in its rightful home inside of the Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Thanks to funding from the Museum’s Guild, the harp was able to undergo repairs this spring and came back with even more musical sounds. A blend of science and music, the Laser Harp is strung with laser beams instead of strings. Sixteen lasers are connected to a computer, and when your hand breaks a laser beam, the computer triggers a rich variety of tones.

Invisible wounds Gold Star mom supports memorial to honor veterans with TBI or PTSD. NEWS EDITOR

Many people don’t realize that wounds that can’t be seen are just as real. That’s what Iraq War veteran Gary Johnson, of Palm Coast, told those gathered at an event honoring Remembering Vets, a support organization, April 13 at the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce. One of the goals of Remembering Vets is to install an Invisible Wounds Memorial in every county in Florida to raise awareness of PTSD and traumatic brain injury, known as TBI. An eight-year veteran, Johnson said that when his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb, he suffered TBI. He is losing his sight and has had PTSD. “I can’t tell you how much I support what they are doing,” he said. He told the audience that if you haven’t seen anyone with invisible wounds, “you have now.” The first Invisible Wounds Memorial is planned to be installed at Heroes Memorial Park in Palm Coast on Nov. 11. The founder of Remembering Vets, Cathy Heighter, said the memorials will not only increase awareness, but also let those affected know they are not forgotten. Johnson has founded Flagler

Warriors Youth Football in Palm Coast, which is run by veterans. “Cathy has our full support,” he said. He will be the keynote speaker at a Remembering Vets dinner on April 23 at VFW Post 8696, 47 Old Kings Road, from 6 to 10 p.m. GOLD STAR MOTHER

Heighter’s son, Raheen Tyson Heighter, was killed in Iraq in 2003 while serving in the 101st Airborne Division. That was the beginning of her first mission for veterans. She worked for two years as part of a Congressional legislative team and was successful in increasing both the gratuity benefit and life insurance for survivors of active duty soldiers in 2005. “The gratuity helps parents take time off to deal with their child’s death,” she said. She also started a scholarship program, which has raised $10,000, in honor of her son, who joined the military so he could get an education. “My son’s goal was to get a four-year degree,” she said. Other programs by Remembering Vets include Quilt of Honor, which has provided many donated quilts to veterans; and Keep Telling the Children, a planned initiative to bring veterans into

for the Invisible Wounds Memorial. “I’ve known young men battling PTSD,” she said. Vicki Leignadier, also of Ormond Beach, spent 31 years in the Army and retired in 2010 as a colonel. She and Heighter take part in Stand Downs, events for homeless veterans, where they can sign up for Veterans Affairs services, get food and clothing, etc. “We are constantly trying to get people in to the VA system,” she said. “There’s a lot of help available.”

classrooms. “We want to educate young people on what the veterans’ service means to the county,” she said. ORMOND CONNECTIONS

Janie Rocke, of Ormond Beach, has a son who served in Iraq as an Army combat medic and a grandson in Kuwait waiting to deploy to Iraq. She became involved with Remembering Vets after meeting Heighter at a VFW post. “We both love our veterans,” she said. “She is phenomenal.” Rocke fully believes in the need

Daniel Giacobbe, peer support specialist, said art helps engage veterans in conversation.

Three commemorative plaques containing the names of 144 Ormond Beach Vietnam War era veterans will be placed on the first floor of City Hall in the next few weeks, according to a city spokeswoman. Nearly 100 Vietnam War era veterans from Ormond Beach attended a ceremony at the Performing Arts Center on April 6, where city officials presented a tribute for their service to the country. Mayor Ed Kelley delivered a proclamation, declaring April 6, 2016, as a day to celebrate Vietnam era veterans in Ormond Beach and remember their service. Each veteran in the audience rose and gave their name and branch of service, with some also telling a story. There are currently plaques at City Hall honoring veterans of World War II and the Korean War.

Navy veteran Gregory Holmes said art has helped build his self-esteem.

Keri Leon, of Ormond Beach, a psychology technician at the center, said they started the art as something fun to do. “I saw the veterans had talent they didn’t even know they had,” she said. “The art that came out was incredible.” Three years ago, they started to display their art at the center, and this year, had a show at Ormond Memorial Art Museum for the first time. “We decided to take it out of the building so people can see it,” she said. At the show, she asked the patrons to look around and see the feelings and the emotions in the art. ‘IT GETS ME OUT OF A FUNK’

Also displaying art was Susan Bergman, of Daytona Beach. She had been in the Army Nurse Corps. in 1972 during the Vietnam War, but did not want to relate experiences. “That’s all I have to day about that,” she said. Bergman had been an artist much of her life but had given it up, mainly because of the expense of the materials. “This has given me a venue as an artist,” she said. “My mother is 95, and she was so excited and happy to get some of my artwork. This has opened up the art world again for me.” She also said she didn’t realize her art had value until she received the support at the center.

ART AFTER WAR regory Holmes, of Ormond Beach, was glad he was able to paint a picture of himself fishing, as his dog sat by his side. His dog died not long ago, and he was able to capture their favorite pastime. Holmes was displaying his art April 14 at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens along with other veterans who take part in the Veterans Affairs Wellness Recovery Program, also known as PRRC (Psychological Rehabilitation and Recovery Center), which helps veterans with mental health problems. The art museum, 78 E. Granada Blvd., has had outreach classes at the Port Orange center since 2010, and this was the first year the veterans have displayed art at the museum. Holmes said creating art has been very calming for him. But for a long time, he said he had a hard time accepting praise and didn’t even sign his art. Now he realizes his art is worthwhile, and it has helped with his self-esteem. “It has benefited me greatly,” he said. “It gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment. I feel good about my work and don’t have so much doubt.” He said classes at the center, which include tai chi and music, have helped him mentally and physically. The veterans have access to social skills training, community integration, goal setting, peer support, etc. As a Navy Corpsman in the early 1970s, Holmes worked at a hospital for veterans. “I was in the burn unit,” he said. “A lot of them had permanent disability. I worked there until I couldn’t take it anymore.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens was founded in 1946 as a memorial to veterans of World War I and II and has continued to honor veterans through the years.

Chris Schriedel had art on display based on science, specifically a TV show he likes called “How the Universe Works.” “A woman from the art league said I’m a good artist,” he said. “It makes you feel good.” Daniel Giacobbe, of Palm Coast, works as a peer support specialist at the center and also displayed some of his art. “I know what painting does for me,” he said. “It gets me out of a funk.” He has found art helpful in opening up conversations with others at the center. “It’s easier to talk to someone when they are relaxed and out of a clinical situation,” he said. “We’re just relaxed and talking.”

“My mother is 95, and she was so excited and happy to get some of my artwork. This has opened up the art world again for me.” SUSAN BERGMAN, veteran who displayed art at the museum

“Look at that swirl,” 8-year-old Alivea Nelson-Romain said as she lifted her paint brush into the air. “Oh, wow,” Hayden Key, 8, exclaimed as she examined the colors her friend caught on the brush. It was so beautiful that Hayden didn’t want to see it disappear. She said, “Don’t use it.” Despite opposition from her peers, Nelson-Romain decided the color was meant to be on her small canvas. She, along with the rest of her classmates from Debra Halter’s third-grade class, were creating art based on things they saw during their walk in the gardens at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum. Led by Master Gardener Janett Taylor, the tour explored all the flora and fauna with students at Osceola Elementary School as a part of the Garden Club of the Halifax Country’s Nature Art Box program. “Most of the children have never been to the gardens,” said Sang Roberson of the club, “even though it’s just two blocks from where they go to school.” Osceola Elementary is a Title 1 school, meaning most of the

children come from low-income families. Roberson said she hopes that when the parents learn the gardens are free, it will encourage them to make time to come out here with their families. “We think just taking a walk can make the kids stop, look and appreciate where they live,” she said. “I’m trying to paint the waterfall and the moss on the rocks,” Key said, hovered over her painting. “It just looked so pretty, and ...” “Interesting,” Nelson-Romain finished her sentence. “Yeah, interesting,” Key agreed. “And beautiful, pretty, sophisticated, whatever all that means.”

GETTING COMPLIANCE

New codes state that vegetation cannot cover the windows of “zombie” houses.

Methods streamlined in Neighborhood Improvement. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Chris Mason, Neighborhood Improvement Division manager, gave an update April 13 on changes at the department to Citizens for Ormond Beach, a nonprofit group of concerned citizens. Meeting at the Ormond Beach Library, Mason told the group that one of the recent changes has been after-hours service. Three days a week, a code enforcement officer will work evenings. This solves the problem of contacting property owners who may be at work during the day. “This has prevented cases from being continued over to the next month,” Mason said. Another change is to assume notification 10 days after a property has been posted with a violation, rather than relying on contact by certified mail, because owners can reject certified mail. “This allows the city to get a contractor faster to resolve the problem,” he said. Mason emphasized that the goal of the department is to get

voluntary compliance. Another new development is the creation of the Unsafe Structure Abatement Team, which consists of the chief building official, city engineer, fire chief, NID manager and a police officer. If a building has been damaged by a storm or has deteriorated, the team can visit it and determine if it is safe for human occupancy. Mason said having this team removes the necessity of multiple visits. The City Commission has approved additional codes for “zombie” houses, which are houses that are in mortgage default but have not been taken over by a financial institution. These include no bushes over windows and doors, no boarding of windows and no garage doors that are ajar. Rita Press, president of CFOB, said many people notified the group about abandoned houses, by visiting CFOBonline. com, and the information was forwarded to the city. She said people should continue to notify CFOB about problem houses. Next, Press said CFOB wants to focus on houses that have been empty for a long time and “see what the dilemma is.”

Chief Jesse Godfrey, the new top cop at the Ormond Beach Police Department, recently discussed plans for the future including body-worn cameras for police and a greater presence on social media. Cameras not only can show what happened when there are conflicting statements, but video can also be used as evidence in an investigation, he said. Plus, they can be used for training officers by showing actual footage. He also plans to look into the police department having an official Facebook page to improve communication with the public. The widest spread crime in Ormond Beach, as in most cities, is property crime, he said. The public could help themselves and the police by not leaving valuables in their cars and locking their cars. Godfrey said the community outreach programs have been successful. “Coffee with a Cop has had a great, positive impact,” he said. “We have already expanded, with the initiative of our Outreach Officers Jay Brennan and John

Ormond is still a wonderful mystery

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Being a reporter for the past two years, I’ve come to know a lot about the weird and unusual in Ormond Beach. It’s something I pride myself on, and it also makes for some great bar stories. But this weekend, I was humbly reminded (again), that there’s still a lot I don’t know. As a part of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program, I hopped on a tour bus to drive down the streets I travel every day with the promise of learning something new. I was skeptical at first, but a few minutes after we got on the road, I had my first lesson — courtesy of Ormond Beach Historical Society volunteer Joyce Benedict and her feathered red hat. Hidden in the brush at 715 W. Granada Blvd. is The Three Chimneys site, the oldest successful British sugar plantation, sugar mill and rum distillery in the United States. One of my classmates, Alex

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

I took a bus tour of Ormond Beach and realized there was a bunch of stuff I still don’t know. Bittner, said what we were all thinking: “I’ve never seen that before in my life.” While I tended to nap during history class, I find it’s exciting to learn about something hundreds of years old when it’s on your own daily commute. Next was something that had caught my eye, but I never bothered to Google: the Timucua Indian Burial Mound. The giant hill is similar to the one in my childhood home that covered our septic tank, but unlike ours it isn’t filled with personal waste, but 125 bodies dating back to A.D. 800. The mound sits on the edge of a neighborhood off South Beach Street, and Benedict told us that residents have reported some spooky instances. “One woman told me that every now and then, the rocking chairs will rock back and forth,” she said, “but there’s no wind.” Remind me to never visit the mound at night. Other stops on our tour included all the old cottages on Orchard Lane, and a hotdog lunch at Fairchild Oak — two more places I had always driven by, but never stopped to enjoy So this is my weekly reminder to keep exploring, because there really is so much to see.

four hours, and the victim said she believed the caller because he sounded official. He gave her a case number and Florida statute number, and the police officer assured her they were fictitious and there was no Officer Stephens at OBPD.

RUDE AWAKENING 4:10 p.m. — First Block of South Beach Street Stolen Vehicle. The victim said that after getting off work he parked his motorcycle in Cassen Park. He then walked under the bridge and sat on a park bench overlooking the water. He got tired, so he rolled up his jacket for a pillow and went to sleep. His motorcycle keys were in his jacket. After sleeping for a couple of hours, he walked back to his motorcycle and found it missing. He searched the area for awhile and then called to report it missing. He said it was possible the keys fell from the jacket while he was sleeping. He said he would send a photo so that a be-on-thelookout could be issued for the motorcycle.

EYES IN THE SKY 1:14 a.m. — River Beach Drive and Riverside Drive Fleeing and Attempting to Elude with Active Lights, Siren. A police officer saw a vehicle traveling northbound on Riverside Drive near Cardinal Drive at an estimated speed of 90 to 100 mph. The officer started a pursuit, and the vehicle kept making turns to elude the officer. The officer broke off the chase and notified the Sheriff’s Office on the direction it was taking. A short time later, officers saw the vehicle traveling west on the Granada Bridge. It made a right turn onto North Beach Street and was located by the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, which began to follow. The helicopter followed the vehicle until it turned its lights out and parked in a yard. The helicopter pilot could see two people leave the vehicle and go between two houses. Two officers detained the two suspects in the back yard. One was the owner of the car and had the key. In a post-Miranda interview, the driver at first said he had been at home but then admitted he had been drinking at a club. He said he was scared and made a mistake. He asked if he could get a ticket and go home if he admitted to driving. He was taken to the county jail.

In the first call, a man named Stephen said he was the Best Western security officer. He said an Ormond Beach police officer would be calling her about claiming property from subjects who were arrested at the motel. She said there is a Best Western security officer, and the caller sounded official. About 4:30 a.m., a caller said he was Officer Stephens with the OBPD. He said they had arrested juveniles for dispersing pizza fliers, and during a chase their shoes fell off. He also talked about the subjects selling drugs to minors. The conversation continued for

he Buccaneers were as impressive as a team could be, winning a district championship. In the 300-meter hurdles, alone, each of their four participants advanced with the Top 4 places. But, despite the boys blowing out their competition by 74 points, the Lady Bucs led coach Terry Anthony to say this: “I’ve been coaching football at Mainland for 20 years, including the year we won a championship. But the feeling I got for these girls the other day was better than any feeling I ever had for any of my teams. These girls have worked so hard, and they did what I asked of them. Our recipe for success has really paid off.” The girls’ runner-up finish was their best ever, according to Anthony. On the boys’ side, Demarcus Adams led Mainland with wins in four events, and Adrian Killins set a personal record in the 100-meter dash with 10.49. “We got a lot of kids who bought into what we’re doing this year,” Anthony said. “Usually I have a lot of older kids who are set in their ways, but I got so many younger kids now, and they have great examples in Adrian Killins and Alex Mack, who are my four-year lettermen. They are their responsible for this. They’ve set the groundwork, and now the young kids are all trying to be like them.” Killins and Mack hope to lead

the Bucs past the regional meet, which will take place at 9 a.m. Friday, April 29, at First Academy.

Alex Mack, along with three other Bucs, swept the Top 4 spots in the 300-meter hurdles.

Deryl Bush, high jump; LeeAnn Kent, long jump; Demarcus Adams, long jump; Malcolm Reed, Adams, Alex Mack, Adrian Killins, 4x400-meter relay; Shannon Ruane, Sada Rowley, Danielle Hernandez, Josilin Mobley, 4x400-meter relay; Killins, 100- and 200-meter dash; Adams, 110- and 300-meter hurdles; Reed, 400-meter dash; Kayla Littlefield, 100-meter hurdles. Seabreeze district champions: Lea Gray, 800- and 1600-meter run; Elizabeth Murray, Grace Smith, Nina Browder, Gray, 4x800-meter relay.

re we surprised that Mainland has run the table in the regular season, shut out seven of its 11 opponents, given up double digits in only one game, and is ranked third in the state? Maybe if we were talking about the boys football team, but I can’t say I saw this coming from the Lady Bucs’ flag team. Even as the wins piled up early on in the season, I still had my doubts. I knew they were good, but they’ve played exceptionally well in every game this season. All of the coaches in the area should try picking coach Scott Wilson’s brain for his football knowledge, if they’re smart. His boys football team is a constant 6A state contender, and now his girls are looking to blaze their own trail. “So, how do the girls and boys teams rule area football?” one might ask. According to Wilson, it’s simple: hard work, discipline and practice—and more practice. Too often I hear about the strenuous hours the boys put in during the summer and the season. At the beginning of the girls’ season, they often held three-hour practices. Wilson says the girls hate when he doesn’t hold practices. And yes, it also includes talent. It doesn’t hurt to have Jasmine Hadley, Cierra Gates, Michella Green and others. Hadley is unguardable, and Gates is one of the most elusive players I’ve seen in flag football. Seeing that she’s able to do anything on the field, Green is the girls’ version of Kordell Stewart — or let’s say Braxton Miller (I think I may have dated myself). After its last regular season game, there will be no room for slip-ups. The Lady Bucs will experience what it’s like to have a bull’s-eye on their back, like the boys team often does. Teams will play their best for a chance to advance and to smear their perfect record. But, that’s OK. Other know Mainland will also play its best, just as in every other game so far.

The last time Father Lopez Catholic girls won a district champion, Ronald Reagan was serving his second term as president, and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” was a chart topper. The current Lady Green Wave team has joined that former group as the District 9-1A champions. “When I see the smile and elation on my athletes’ faces and how all of our hard work, dedication and training is paying off, it is gratifying as a coach,” Sue O’Malley said. “Since day one, our team has been trying to bring back a district title to the school after 29 years.” The girls, along with the boys, who finished as district runnerups, frequently placed in the Top 4 of all individual competition. Bailey Gillespy won four championships to assist the girls winning by 25 points, while the boys beat third-place Master’s Academy by 75 points. “For the boys, we were really trying to be three-time district champions,” O’Malley added. “We knew it was going to be a close meet. the team came down with the flu. That really hurt us and could have made the difference in the meet.” Next up is the region meet, which will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, April 29, at First Academy in Orlando. “We are not stopping here,” O’Malley said. “We want to take as many athletes to states and place in the Top 8.”

Shaya Fogel’s cafe hasn’t opened yet, but he’s already claiming to have the best cup of coffee in the city. “I’m a passionate coffee drinker,” he said, “and it’s hard to get a great cup of coffee in Ormond Beach.” So how much does Fogel think a great cup of coffee should cost? While there are no promises yet, he’s thinking somewhere around

$1.50 for the basics. Though Eden Fresh Cafe isn’t set to open until May, Event Organizer Tamara Huth already hosted the first event April 10. he Ormond Beach Garden Club celebrated its 65th year with a Flower Show and Tea on April 6 at The Casements. The theme was Springtime and Wedding Bells, and those attending enjoyed plant displays inside and tea, cookies and sandwiches on the north lawn. In previous years, the event had been held in February inside The Casements. Sue Parkerson, past president, said they decided to take advantage of the spring weather.

“This is what Florida is all about,” she said. Funds raised are used by the 40-member group for community beautification projects such as landscaping for Habitat for Humanity Homes and outdoor gardening at Signature Healthcare of Ormond. Tom Massfeller, the only male member, said he joined because the group does a lot for the city. “I’m not the biggest gardener,” he said, “but I can help with the setup.” The club meets at 9:30 a.m., the first Wednesday of each month, October through May.

Passover at the Hilton — because it’s the closest thing to Israel The message of Beth Judah is one of building friendships, and they want to spread that message at their Passover Seder. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

On Passover Seder Sunday, the congregation of Beth Judah will gather in the ballroom of the Hilton in Daytona Beach to celebrate 3,200 years of being free from all kinds of slavery. Rabbi Dr. Bruce Tucker loves the venue for many reasons, but mainly because it’s the closest they can get to Israel. “The ballrooms open up to glass windows facing east,” he said. “It’s the closest we can get, unless Emily Blackwood we want to Rabbi Dr. Bruce Tucker walk in the water.” Held to commemorate the Israelites being freed from slavery, Rabbi Tucker calls the Passover the most important faith event in the world because it serves as a
