What to do about those damaged trees … After Hurricane Matthew, many homeowners in Ormond Beach and Palm Coast wonder what to do about damaged trees. Should trees be removed? Right after a windstorm or hurricane, communities and homeowners need to decide what to do with their storm-damaged trees. City of Palm Coast Urban Forester Carol Mini said that although damage to trees may seem devastating, some trees can be treated and saved, while others need to be removed. As our community recovers from Hurricane Matthew, which caused extensive damage to trees, here is Mini’s advice about restoring trees after a major storm, provided by the city of Palm Coast: GET A PROFESSIONAL

Tree care professionals with the proper equipment and insurance can handle taking trees down in open areas and removing dead or hazardous limbs. You will need a certified arborist to remove a leaning tree or broken limb that is near a house or other potential target, to reach limbs that require climbing, to restore a damaged tree that could be saved and to prune to promote good structure.

Beware of scams! If you suspect a company is price-gouging, you may file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office by calling 1-866-9-NO-SCAM. If you suspect a company of committing a crime against seniors, contact: AG’s Office Seniors vs. Crimes (Local), Ken Seymour at 586-2634 or svckensey@gmail.com. HIRING AN ARBORIST

Unqualified individuals wanting to make a quick dollar may bring chain saws and equipment to help clean up after the storm. However, qualified arborists from around the country also come to help. Learn to identify the qualified arborists because unqualified workers may get hurt or cause irreparable damage to trees or your property. Hiring an arborist is a worthwhile investment. Trees increase property value when they are well maintained but can be a liability if poorly pruned or unhealthy. Get more than one written estimate. Keep in mind that specialized equipment, qualified skills, and insurance will cost more. Good tree work is worth the additional investment; poor work may cost more in the long run. PROPER PRUNING

Well-pruned trees survive hurricanes better than poorly pruned or unpruned trees. Poor pruning practices, such as topping or removing large branches, make trees more susceptible to wind failure. Old, large pruning cuts

can become an entry point for fungi that begin the decay process. WHEN TO REMOVE A TREE

 The lower trunk is cracked or broken.  A large stem has spilt from the tree.  The tree is leaning towards a target (person, building, roadway).  The remaining tree structure is highly susceptible to breakage.  The major roots are severed or broken.  Large limbs are broken. Even after experiencing high winds, many trees can be restored. However, restore only trees that have major limbs, trunk and roots intact. Roots should not be exposed or lifted out of the soil. Trees that lose all or some of their leaves in hurricanes are not necessarily dead; leaf loss means the tree is temporarily unable to photosynthesize (produce food) and store energy. With time, the tree will produce new leaves. If the tree does not grow new leaves by the spring or early summer following a hurricane, it is not likely to recover. Pines may show no immediate visible damage after hurricanes but may decline over time. They can die slowly over a period of six months to two years after windstorms. Some may remain green for a year or more, and then suddenly turn yellow and quickly progress to brown needles in a very short period.

Monitor pines carefully. Look for signs of stress or poor health. Check closely for insects. Weakened pines may be more susceptible to beetles and diseases. Call Palm Coast Urban Forestry at 986-3758.

YPG Flagler hosts inaugural

Farm-to-Table Dinner Fresh food? You bet. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

The Young Professional Group of Flagler County recently hosted a Farm-to-Table Dinner at WP Rawl & Jankowski Farms in Bunnell. Held Sept. 30, the inaugural event was presented by the Florida Farm Bureau of Flagler County and was a fundraiser for Youth Leadership Flagler, the local Future Farmers of America programs and 4-H Youth Development. Local chefs prepared a fivecourse meal with ingredients generously donated by the Flagler County Cattleman’s Association, the Flagler Sport Fishing Club and local farms. Listed below are the chefs. GARY MARESCA

Gary Maresca. has been working in the restaurant business for over 30 years. He is currently the head chef at Island Grille in Flagler Beach. His favorite food style is South Western and Asian fusion. He prepared a smoked local flounder dip on a crostini, local shrimp ceviche on plaintain, and butternut Squash and gorgonzola risotta cake for appetizers. BEN KIRK

tossed in preserved lemon dressing with croutons, parmesean and golden raisins and classic corn chowder with roasted poblano chiles and crumbled chorizo. TYLER GUERRIERO

Florida-raised, Tyler Guerriero, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York. He has a gastronomical imagination that rivals some of the best chefs, and it’s certainly obvious from his work. He never just serves food: He serves experiences. He is currently a chef in Austin, Texas. He prepared prime rib served with serrano chimichurri and red wine jus sauces, roasted beets and fingerling potatoes.

professional chef experience and is a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School and Daytona State Culinary School. She is the current pastry chef at the Hammock Dunes Club and thrives on creating unique and beautiful desserts. She prepared flourless chocolate truffle cake with fresh berries and orange chantilly cream. WHY FARM TO TABLE?

Chelsea Barney, vice president of 4C’S Trucking and Excavation,

was the chairwoman of the Farm to Table committee and member of the YPG board of directors. She said the event was created as a way to recognize a component of Flagler County that often goes unrecognized. “Whether we want to admit it or not, we are consumed with convenience,” she said during her speech at the event. “We pay $5 for an instant cup of coffee, we feed our families out of paper bags and drive-thru windows, and we are never without a phone in our hands documenting every moment behind a lens. While we are overwhelmed with our daily life, our families, our Facebooks, our social events and our careers. The farmer is quiet, he is patient, and he is consistent.” “He is rarely recognized, yet constantly needed,” she continued. “He is rarely praised and often criticized. He celebrates his victories around his kitchen table and he wears his defeat heavy on his shoulders. Farming ... is long hours, it is hot days and it is hard work. It is unpredictable, it bears a big risk and grants a smaller reward. So tonight I ask that you will join me in thanking our farmers. They deserve our appreciation and our recognition. After all, we couldn’t eat without them.”

Laura DeFranco stands in the front yard of her home on Fordney Place in Palm Coast, next to a sign that identifies her yard as the Garden Club at Palm Coast Yard Selection of the Month for October. DeFranco became interested in gardening when she was a young girl, when she followed her Italian grandparents around their garden in Georgetown, Connecticut. She moved to Palm Coast in 2013 and was fascinated with Florida gardening. She is an art-

ist and has an eye for the color of the different pants. A ligustrum tree is the focal point in her front yard, with a century plant, geraniums and several fall colors of canna lilies blended in. A pygmy date palm is surrounded by bubblegum pink supertunias and oyster plants. Several lantanas, planted to attract butterflies, sit among the elephant ears, mussaenda with delicate yellow blooms, and a gardenia topiary. There is an angel trumpet, hearts delight caladium butterfly bushes and an unusual shaped holly tree. This garden is an example with what can be done on a small square lot and still be a treasure showcase of beauty.
