This is the third year that Lalonde and Leslie have co-hosted the event, which gets more popular year after year. Within the first two hours more than 200 people had checked in with 50 more on a waiting list.

“It’s just so nice to see families getting together and not only families, you see friends, grandparents and neighbours.

We even have a family here with eight children, who would not normally afford to go bowling together. So this is why we do these things to bring everyone together and spend the day with each other,” said Lalonde.

Leslie echoed his provincial colleague’s sentiments.

“This is the third year doing it as a combined team and it just keeps getting bigger and better. And what it does is gets families out having fun and that’s what Family Day is all about,” said Leslie.

Many families were also having fun at Laserforce on Trim Road, where Matt Luloff was holding his laser tag event.

“We’ve had over 40 families come out today for two hours of free play. It’s been amazing,” said Luloff. “We even had Andrew Leslie come out to play the first. I won’t tell you where he placed, but it was a lot of fun.”

Innes Ward Coun. Laura Dudas also hosted an event. “The Joy of Winter Under the Stars” was held in Barrington Park on Sunday night. The event included snowshoeing, ice skating, hot chocolate and more.

Local federal election race off to early start

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The federal election might still be eight months away, however, the local race is already heating up with the Conservative nomination process already in full swing and NDP hopeful Jacqui Wiens poised to get the green light from the party.

Meanwhile, Liberal incumbent Andrew Leslie is sitting in the catbird seat ready to take on all comers including former Liberal rival David Bertshci should the Orléans lawyer win the Conservative nomination.

“We’ve been canvassing door-to-door almost every week and we started that two weeks after the last election,” says Leslie.

“So we’ve knocked on thousands of doors and we’ve been fundraising, of course, so we’re more than ready.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, Leslie plans to focus his campaign on the economy and his accomplishments in securing federal funding for projects such as Phase 2 of the LRT and the Ottawa River Action Plan.

“Unemployment in the riding has declined every year since 2015. It was 7.1 per cent and now it’s down to 4.6 per cent,” Leslie points out. “Nationally, we’ve seen the creation of 800,000 full-time jobs since we came to power and that’s pushed unemployment to a 40-year low. We have lowered income tax for the middle class and introduced the Canada Child Benefit which for the typical family gives them up to $5,500.

“In terms of federal funding into the riding, we approved the funding to extend the LRT to Trim Road. We approved our share of the sewage resettling project which is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan. And we are prepared to step in and augment funding to the francophone community that is under threat from the Ford government.”

Leslie is also proud of his government’s commitment to Canada’s military veterans. “We’ve not only restored the cuts that the former Conservative government

made, but we’ve allocated another $10 billion plus,” the former Lieutenant General points out.

While the Liberal incumbent appears to be in mid-election form, the local Conservatives must still select a candidate to oppose him. The contest is a three-man race between Bertschi, retired Armed Forces senior officer Gerry Potter and cyber security consultant Will Hickie.

Berstchi has been holding a series of meet-and-greet events over the past month.

During a recent event at the Trim and Watters Tim Horton’s, he spoke with a number of local Conservative members who wanted to know his position on issues like the carbon tax and the SNC Lavalin affair.

“It’s about meeting and listening to the residents and I am very encouraged,” said Bertschi. “I’ve been getting a lot of tough questions, but it’s given me a chance to lay out my position on the issues with the people and it’s been very positive.”

Among the people who wanted to meet Bertschi face to face was Bradley Estates resident Michael Baillot whose nephew, Alain Rayes, is the Quebec lieutenant for the federal Conservatives.

“I have to admit at first I wasn’t too sure, but now after meeting him I’m happy. He has my support for sure,” said Baillot.

Gerry Potter served in the military for 35 years. He is currently employed as a consultant to government, private industry, and not-for-profit organizations.

Of the three challengers for the Conservative nomination Potter threw his hat into the ring first, doing so last August when he learned that the Liberals had disqualified groups applying for the Summer Jobs Program if they didn’t agree in writing that they supported abortion rights.

“That was the tipping point for me.

It went totally against freedom of conscience, freedom of thought and freedom of religion,” says Potter.

Francophone institution celebrates 40th anniversary

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star For many anglophones living in Orléans the word MIFO is a mystery, but for the 43,000 francophones living in the area the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans has played a leading role in highlighting and promoting French cultural expression for the past four decades.

The seeds of what would eventually become MIFO were planted by a group of students at Garneau High School who were assigned a project “The Survival of the French Fact in Orléans” in 1978. The project would provide the impetus for what would become a movement to create an organization to protect and promote the French culture in Orléans.

A year later, the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans was born with the mission to promote francophone culture and contribute to its development through the provision of educational, artistic and community activities and services to the population of Orléans and its surroundings.

Although it was originally founded to act as a buttress against the anglicization

of the community, MIFO’s raison d’être remains as relevant as ever today.

“Its presence is still as relevant and important because it allows the community to meet, discuss, grow and live in French every day. It contributes to the long-term survival of the franco phone community in Orléans and its surroundings,” explains MIFO chair Trèva Cousineau.

Over the years, MIFO has been able to adapt to the growing needs of the francophone community, which has allowed it to become the largest FrancoOntarian cultural centre in the province, growing from a single employee and dozens of volunteers in 1979 to 350 employees and 160 volunteers today.

Arguably, the organization’s most important milestone was the construction of the Centre culturel d’Orléans on Carriere Street in 1985. The building became the centre of French culture in the area with regular artistic performances, services for seniors, art and language courses, and space for cultural exhibitions.

The next significant milestone was the completion of the Shenkman Arts Centre in 2009 which allowed the

WTF? Sorry to be so crass, but what the bleep?

The Peel Regional Police received dozens of complaints from residents who were upset that their lives were interrupted by an Amber Alert for a 11-year-old girl who had been reported missing by her mother.

The Amber Alert was issued at 11:36 p.m. and broadcast over the Bell and Rogers television and cell phone networks. She was soon found deceased in a Brampton residence after being murdered by her father. The Amber Alert was called off at 12:01 a.m.

That didn’t stop dozens of people from calling and e-mailing the Peel Police Department complaining that the Amber Alert had woken them up and disturbed their sleep.

Who are these people? How insensitive and uncaring must you be to complain about an Amber Alert for a missing child? Seriously.

I was watching TV when the Amber Alert came across my cell phone and television screen. I saw that it was for a missing child in Brampton and hit the cancel button, but not before I felt a sense of concern for the poor girl’s family.

It’s called empathy and apparently it is a rare commodity among a certain segment of the population who don’t give a crap about their fellow man, especially between the hours of 11 p.m. and 9 a.m. or whenever else it’s deemed “inconvenient”.

To which I say, “Imagine if it was your child who had gone missing late at night, or was suspected of being kidnapped?”

Who are these people?

Const. Akhil Mooken of the Peel Police Department summed up his own feelings this way. “I can’t even begin to describe how disappointing and upsetting it is to read the comments, e-mails and calls to our communications bureau complaining about receiving an Amber Alert late at night,” he said in a tweet.

“Disapponinting and upsetting” is perhaps the understatement of the year. How about infuriating and nauseating?

Would these people feel the same if the Amber Alert was about a possible tornado, or a terrorist attack? “Sorry to inconvenience you but there is an extreme likelihood that a tornado will touchdown in your vicinity in the next three to four hours.”

“Sorry, not now, I’m trying to get some sleep.”

When I first heard of the reaction to the Amber Alert, I immediately thought of the U.S.A., because it was the type of reaction I would expect from our neighbours to the south. But it wasn’t. It was from Canadians. People who live in a country that prides itself on being a caring, nurturing and empathetic nation.

We are the anti-thesis of America, or at least I thought we were. But perhaps that was just a romantic notion. A nostalgic remembrance of what we once were and are no more. That was until I started seeing the reaction of other ordinary Canadians who were just as upset as I was and it began to restore my faith in my fellow countrymen.

Perhaps we’re not all self-indulgent, self-possessed cretins.

Perhaps we really go give a crap about our neighbours, even those we don’t know by their first name or who don’t necessarily live beside us. Perhaps we don’t mind being awakened by an Amber Alert at 11:36 at night. Perhaps we care.

Snow, snow and more snow, what’s a man to do That’s it, I’m done. I’ve shoveled my last shovelfull of snow.

I have faced off against Mother Nature and Mother Nature has won. I am a defeated man.

Seriously. The first snowstorm was bad enough. After all, it dumped five inches of the white stuff in my double wide driveway, but the second storm two days later was more than I could take.

The wind blew a three-foot drift across most of my driveway and a similar drift along my entire walkway.

Just getting to my car took nearly a half an hour. For the next two plus hours, I was able to clear a path to the street while taking a break every 15 minutes to avoid a potential heart attack.

One of my neighbours must have noticed me labouring in my laneway, because later the same day someone got their snow clearing service to get rid of the snowbank the city plow had unceremoniously left at the end of my driveway. God bless them, whoever they are. It took me two days to clear the rest of the snow away.

It’s been a rough year for snow clearing companies. Most of them operate on a contract that stipulates how much snow they will clear for a given price. If

Before this year, I never believed in hiring a service to clear my driveway. I figured I could do it myself. After all, it’s only snow. I believe there were only one or two days last year when I wished I had hired someone. My friends swear by it.

They say it’s the best investment they’ve ever made, especially this year.

Personally, the jury is still out. As for Mother Nature, or Old Man Winter, or whoever is responsible for all this snow, cool it. Go take a vacation down south with all the other snowbirds and give us a break.

I usually go on strike from shoveling in March, but there is still a long way to go between now and then and the possibility

of a lot more snow, God forbid.

So I’m going to keep my fingers crossed and my shovel by the front door just in case.

• • • They say one of the best cures for the winter blahs is Winterlude. The only problem with Winterlude is that it’s held in the winter.

By now you may have realized that I am not exactly a winter person. I talked about some of the reasons why in my last column. But that was not always the case.

When my ex and I bought our house in Old Ottawa South back in 1994 we were determined to take advantage of its close proximity to the canal, especially in the winter.

When our daughter Maggie was born we actually walked over to Lansdowne Park, strapped on our skates and skated all the way down to Dow’s Lake and back with me towing Maggie in a small sled behind us.

The next year we managed to skate to Dow’s Lake, but ended up walking back.

By the third winter we didn’t even bother putting on our skates, we justed walked to Dow’s Lake, checked out the snow sculptures and ate some Beavertails. I’m pretty sure that was the last time I’ve been

to Winterlude.

I also remember taking Maggie tobogganing once. I even have the picture to prove it.

I did make a valiant attempt at embracing winter when the boys were nine or 10. Thinking that they might love snowboarding, I went out and bought all the equipment and enrolled them in lessons at Camp Fortune.

They actually took all eight lessons and after the last lesson the instructor thought they were ready to take on the big hill.

I can still remember riding up the chairlift with Jamie and the instructor was in the chair in front of us with Dylan.

When James and I got off the chair the instructor and Dylan had disappeared.

It wasn’t until Jamie and I had gone a 100 feet or so that I noticed a crowd of people off to the side among some trees.

In the middle of the crowd was Dylan.

Apparently the instructor had gone down the hill on her own, thinking that Dylan would wait for me and Jamie. Instead he decided to go down on his own and went straight into the trees. Thankfully he didn’t hurt himself, but it took me an hour to get both of them down the hill with a kid tucked under each arm.

We haven’t been back since.

Local restaurants square off in Chili Challenge Cook-off

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Local chefs were put to the test in the first annual Stray Dog Brewing Chili Challenge Cook-off on Feb. 9, with patrons of the brewery emerging as the real winners as they got to sample seven different chilies while enjoying a Stray Dog brew to cleanse their palate.

Two different titles were up for grabs.

The first was the top chili as selected by a panel of five judges that included local city councillors Matt Luloff and Laura Dudas and the second was the People’s Choice Award.

Both judges and patrons had their work cut out for them as the chilies were all extremely good with slight differences between them both in terms of the spicyness and the secret ingredients.

After tasting each one, the judges selected Jonny Canucks as their top choice, followed by Meatings BBQ and OCCO Kitchen. The People’s Choice Award went to Bite Burger. Taproom 360 came in second and the CRAFT Beer Market was third, proving once again that chili judging can be extremely subjective.

The panel of five celebrity judges even had a hard time trying to decide which chili was the best.

“It was delicious. Pretty awesome,” said first-time judge Matt Luloff who had Jonny Canucks as his top choice. “It wasn’t a consensus. The two judges from 88.5 were a little on the conservative side.

But I think we did a pretty good job in coming up with our top three.”

The two judges the Orléans councillor was referring to were Andrew Elliot and Dave Schellenberg from The Morning Start Up Show. The panel was rounded out by Mary Ann Ivison from Ottawa’s New Country 94.

Innes Ward Coun. Laura Dudas was more than happy to take time away on a Sunday to be a guest celebrity judge.

“It was an easy decision. I love chili and the spicier the better. Spice and meat, that’s what I look for. But this was so hard to judge because they were all so amazing and they were all very different. It really speaks to the quality of restaurants that we have here in the east end,” said Dudas.

Asked if she would come back to judge the contest if she was asked again, she didn’t hesitate.

“Anything I can do to support local business I’m there for, especially if it involves chili.”

MIFO 40th anniversary Continued from page 5 The former Liberal government of Ontario pledged $4.2 million towards the project with the expectation that the federal government would do the same, leaving the final third up to the organization. The current Conservative government in Ontario has yet to make a formal commitment to the $4.2 million pledged by the Liberals. The hope is that they will do so in the upcoming budget.

The federal government has also held back on making a formal commitment. The expectation is that they will do so once the Ford government has made an announcement.

Everything hinges on the province.

Once it’s built, the new centre will allow MIFO to expand its programming to include a component for francophone teens in the area.

“We want to give them a place so that they can animate their own community and create a sense of belonging,” explains MIFO’s executive director Marie-Claude Doucet.

It’s that type of commitment to the youth of the community that bodes well for the future of the organization which remains as relevant today as it did 40 years ago.

2019 Kids’ Camps WHY SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO CAMP?

Back in the day, going to summer camp meant travelling somewhere deep in the woods to stay in a cabin or tent, paddle a canoe, see wildlife and sing songs by the camp fire.

That seemed to be a part of almost every child’s summer.The readers who are 40 or older can probably relate to those quasi-fun-filled, sun burnt and blackfly-bitten summers.

Those getaways are now labelled as traditional camps, which blend a variety of sports, the wilderness, creative arts and special activities into their programs.

In this day and age, summer camps cater to just about every need or wish.

You can sign your children up for a tripping camp with the focus on the wild and canoeing to a new campsite every night.

Still not doing anything for you? Then why not send you daughter to Girl Guide Camp or son to Boy Scout Camp?

If that’s still not working, then why not try a computer camp which is painful to suggest, because these days too many youngsters seem to spend hours – even days – on their electronic devices.

There are camps to practice a sport, arts and drama camps, ones to learn new languages, photography camps, and even circus camps.

And yes, there are family camps which enable families to get out and enjoy nature and activities together.

If a family is burdened with the cost of sending several kids away for a couple of weeks, then subsidized camps may be the answer. They are defined as a division of the traditional camps but provide scholarships and discounts for underprivileged youth and offer a similar program.

We start rockers as young as 2 with our Little Wing program. From there they move into Rookies (ages 6-7) where students start to move towards an instrument that they would like to master.

After Rookies comes Rock 101 (ages 7-11) where students have picked their instrument and begin weekly rehearsals as a band. Our Performance program, for ages 11-17, also combines a weekly rehearsal with weekly private lessons and a mind-blowing season ending show every four months or so. For those students who want even more, the School

2019 Kids’ Camps How to Choose a Summer Camp Your child’s interests What does your child like to do? Children know what they like and don’t like. Ask them for their input. If your child is active and loves to play sports, a sports camp is probably right for him or her. If your child is creative, then choose a camp that offers arts and crafts. Camp choices are as varied as children themselves. Choose a camp with the specific focus geared toward your child.

Day Camp versus Overnight Camp Depending on the age, maturity and independence of your child, he or she may or may not be ready for an overnight camp. Some overnight camps accept children as young as six years old. Only you can decide when the time is right.

Research With pencil in hand, contact the camps you are considering and ask some specific questions. Not all camps are created equal, so ask the same questions to each camp director and compare their answers. You need to feel comfortable with their answers before you make your choice.

Camp directors are used to answering questions about every detail of camp. If you don’t get the answers you are looking for, keep searching. You need to feel good about your decision. After all, you want your child to have an awesome camp experience that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

2019 Kids’ Camps The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club Summer fun, friendship and skill-building start at the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club’s (ONEC) multi-sport Summer Day Camps!

Designed for children of any skill level (aged 7-17), they feature tennis, sailing, rowing, canoeing and stand-up paddle-boarding in various combinations. The camps run from July 2 to August 23, 2019, on week days from 9 am – 4 pm on a half or on a full-day basis and for one to four weeks. Pre and post camp supervision is available.

All instructors are certified.

ONEC’s Sailing Camp uses the CANSail progressive certification from levels 1-4. CANSail 1 takes a full-day week; CANSail 2 takes two to three weeks; CANSail 3 & 4 each take four to six weeks; all participants must sign up for fullday sailing camps.

Shenkman Arts Centre a few. Children start the day in one of the centre’s specialized studios but there are also plenty of opportunities to get outside. Classes offer the opportunity to film in the sunshine, watch a performance as part of the exciting summer series on the Agora Minto-Orléans outdoor plaza, draw, eat lunch in the fresh air, or just blow off some steam. Some camps have organized outings to local pools, and parks.

ONEC’s Watersports offer ‘Rowing Adventures’ in the morning through which Row Canada’s Journey 1 & 2 certification is attained and Paddling Adventures in the afternoon when campers learn to canoe and use stand-up paddleboards.

ONEC’s Tennis Camps are a great way to get your child interested in tennis or to build on the skills they already possess. Participants learn stroke basics, game strategy, footwork, sportsmanship and receive an ONEC Summer Day Camp t-shirt. Structured off-court activities are also organized.

2019 Kids’ Camps

Wynbrook Riding School Is your child crazy about horses and ponies? If you are looking for total horse immersion and a dream-cometrue for your child, then Summer Camp at Wynbrook Farm is the place to be this summer!

Now in our 33rd season, Wynbrook Farms is offering a two-week camp for children aged 7 to 14. The two-week session will run from Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12 and from Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19.

During the camp, participants will develop a bond with the horse or pony they will be paired with for the week and they will learn the basics of horsemanship, grooming, handling and practical horse care.

The children will ride twice daily with a morning instructional lesson and an afternoon “pony game” which could include mounted games, bareback, trail riding etc. Day Camp activities also include nature hikes, arts and crafts, trampoline, and scavenger hunts.

On the final day of the camp, the children will perform a “horse show”

for their parents and friends to enjoy as they demonstrate the skills they have learned at camp. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt as well as their very first horse show ribbon as a keepsake of their time spent at Wynbrook Farm.

The 2019 fee remains the same as in previous years: $870 + HST, and we limit our enrollment to 20 children.

With a team of 4-5 staff members, we are able to maintain our standards of safety and professional care as high as ever.

All campers are required to have their own riding pants (breeches or leggings) and paddock (or equivalent) boots with a small heel.

Camp activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. and we can help arrange for car-pooling, early drop offs or late pick-ups should that be necessary.

Queenswood Villa residence celebrates silver anniversary Special to the Orléans Star The Queenswood Villa retirement residence celebrated its 25th anniversary on Feb. 9 with a special casino day.

The residents and their family members were able to try their hand at Blackjack, Roulette and even a pair of slot machines while also having their picture taken to mark the special occasion.

Sales manager Christine O’Grady said the day was a huge success.

“The residents had a ball. Everyone was dressed to the nines. The ladies all wore their best outfits with jewelry and the men were all in suits and ties. They were all very excited,” said O’Grady.

Many of the family members also filled in as blackjack dealers and roulette wheel spinners.

To go along with the special occasion special hors d’oeuvres were served along with red and white wine. There was even a bar serving up mixed drinks.

“The residents loved it. They actually asked if they could do it every week,” laughed O’Grady.

When it first opened in 1994, the Queenswood Villa was among just a handful of seniors residences in the area along with the Orléans Villa, the Résidence St. Louis and the Blackburn Lodge.

Revera Retirement Genpar Inc. bought the property in May, 2013 and has maintained it as an independent living facility ever since.

The residence is made up of 58 rooms

set in a bungalow style with three wings each leading to the centre foyer.

“Our residents really feel at home here,” says O’Grady. “It’s small. It’s cozy and everyone knows everyone.

And there’s constant action. We have yoga classes and different games. There’s always something going on for our residents to do.”

A quick look at the activity calendar reveals there are a handful of things to do every day including laughter yoga, singa-longs, mini golf, charades and Netflix movie nights.

Besides all the activities, the residents are also appreciative of the fact that most of the staff, including O’Grady live in the area.

It’s also relatively inexpensive with studios starting at $1,995 a month.

Potential residents can book a tour of the property and enjoy a meal in the spacious dining room. Rooms are also available for short-term and respite stays and the residence is pet friendly.

Chapel Hill residents have blast competing in All Seniors Games

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The residents at the Chapel Hill All Seniors retirement community on Innes Road recently wrapped up their fourth annual All Seniors Games after taking part in four days of friendly competition that included Wii Bowling and Wii Golf, cribbage, bridge, bocci, darts, suffleboard and trivia. After each event gold, silver and bronze medals were handed out to the top three finishers.

The Games opened on Feb. 4 with a hallway rock and roll procession followed by a Dance, Dance, Dance presentation by some of the residents and staff which was the theme of this year’s event.

The final medal presentation ceremony was held on Feb. 8 with Orléans MPP Marie-France Lalonde and Innes Ward Coun, Laura Dudas in attendance to help and out the hardware along with Rachel Crossan from Orléans MP Andrew Leslie’s office.

Life is better with a smile and a sense of humour I don’t expect I am alone in that I have never longed more for a winter to be over.

And not just because of the snowfall, freezing rain and arctic cold. You see, I had plans for January and February. I had opted for an elective surgery that would improve my quality of life and make it easier for me to be the hot shot “senior” recreational runner I like to think of myself as being. I would be more than ready for my eighth Ottawa Race Weekend.

I was going to have quick day surgery in early January and proceed to be super productive over the six-week recovery period. While I couldn’t run, I would be an active volunteer at the Orléans parkrun, my weekly go-to 5 km running event.

I was going to ruthlessly sort through banker boxes of family photos: if I couldn’t remember where a picture was taken or recognize who was in it, it was gone. I had a list of books to read and a whole season of Madam Secretary to watch. It was going to be “me time” to make up for October’s canceled trip to Italy.

A Seniors Moment

It didn’t for me this time. Surgery didn’t go exactly as planned and I have had a catheter for the six weeks since. This week, I am back in surgery, hopefully to resolve the problem.

Although volunteering at parkrun was no longer an option, I was not prepared for how bone-weary I was post-surgery or how long it took to adjust to my new “fashion accessory.” I didn’t sort any pictures and spent a lot more time playing games on my phone than reading.

These past weeks have given me time to think about how our attitude impacts us and the people around us. While I didn’t accomplish most of what I had intended to do, I tried hard not to feel

sorry for myself and focused on being grateful for the parts of this adventure that went well: unlike so many, I am dealing with an inconvenience, not a lifethreatening condition and I received the utmost support and compassion from the healthcare professionals who have been part of this journey, including a post-op nurse at the Civic who tried to encourage my bladder with a solo performance of “Singing in the Rain”.

Despite the horrific OC Transpo crash the afternoon before, I had a miraculously swift visit to emergency in the early hours of January 12 and was impressed by everyone during my weekly visits to the gem that is the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre at the Riverside.

I am also eternally grateful for my husband, family and friends.

That is not to say I haven’t missed driving, fresh air, my weekly coffee Klatch and my old routine. But who can’t be cheered up by the sight of your surgeon wearing a standout purple scrub hat or by the red flowered oven mitts covering the stirrups in her office’s examination room?

I did get some reading done and watched a few of the shows accumulated on our PVR, but after too many reruns of The Big Bang Theory, I needed to raise the bar on my television viewing and watched the 2018 documentary Pope Francis – In His Own Words.

I am not Catholic, but I have always been inspired by the wisdom, compassion and humility of Pope Francis. In this 96-minute documentary, he expresses his views on many of our world’s challenges.

At the end, he asks the rhetorical question: what example would he give of simple, everyday beauty that has the power to “make others feel better and be happier.”

His answer was unpretentious: a smile and a sense of humour.

He then admits that every day, after his Morning Prayer, he recites Saint Thomas More’s Prayer for Good Humour, which reads in part: “Grant me, O Lord, a sense of humour. Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke to discover in life a bit of joy and to be able to share it with others.”

Ultimately, it was smiles and humour that has gotten me through this interminable and challenging winter.

All Seniors Games Chapel Hill executive director Melissa Meikle said everyone who took part in the event had a great time including many of the residents who served as spectators in cheering on their fellow residents.

“The participants took this very seriously,” said Meikle. “So much so that they want to start training for next year’s Games right away when the theme will be Traditions.”

The oldest competitor was Gaston Gagnon who turned 90 on the final day of the Games and won a silver medal in cribbage.

Resident Hélêne Bray won medals in golf, bowling and trivia.

“I really enjoyed it. When you win you’re always happy and when you win gold it’s even better,” joked Bray who has competed in the Games for the past three years.

The All Seniors Games is a national event with over 30 All Seniors retirement communities taking part.

“Each day’s results are sent into our head office where they tally up all the scores and then they give out national medals as well,” explains Meikle.

At the time the medal presentation ceremony was being held at Chapel Hill, the national results were still being tabulated. How the Chapel Hill residents fared in comparison with the other All Seniors communities was still a mystery, But if there was a medal for enthusiasm and sheer enjoyment, then Chapel Hill would be on the top step of the podium.

Rebelles close in on high school hoops crown

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The Louis Riel Rebelles are one step away from the ‘AAA’ senior boys basketball championship and a trip to the OFSAA provincial tournament in Hamilton later this month.

The only thing that stands in their way are the Longfields Davidson Heights Ravens who they will face in the title game on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The Rebelles punched their ticket to the final with an emphatic 71-52 win over the Glebe Gryphons in their semi-final on Feb. 21. The Ravens earned their spot in the final with a 57-50 win over the St. Patrick Fighting Irish.

The two teams only previous meeting was in the opening game of the season on Nov. 29 which the Rebelles won 68-66.

They would go on to reel off eight straight wins including their semi-final triumph over Glebe.

The Gryphons were able to keep the score close against Louis Riel until midway through the first quarter when the Rebelles went on a 14-2 run that included

The Gryphons scored a pair of baskets to close out the quarter and narrowed the deficit to eight points.

It didn’t take long for the Rebelles to reestablish a double digit lead and by the end of the first half they led 38-23.

Louis Riel extended their advantage even further in the third quarter, leading by as much as 24 points before cruising to a 23-point victory.

Stone led the way with a game high 24 points, while teammates Sacha Gauthier and Bahdon Ali added 14 points each.

The team is hoping to win the city championship and make it to provincials with a roster that is made up almost entirely of Grade 11s, including all five starters who graduated from last year’s junior team that was a perfect 23-0 and won the city championship.

The Rebelles are also attempting to do one better than last year’s senior boys squad which won the provincial ‘A’ championship, and capture the ‘AAA’ title, or at least come back with a medal.

Kevin Frost wins speed skating gold in Lake Placid STAR STAFF – Kevin Frost is diagnosed.

at it again. The multi-sport deaf-blind athlete recently won a gold medal competing against able-bodied athletes at a speed skating event in Lake Placid last month.

The Jack Shea Sprints Championships are held every January on an outdoor oval by the Lake Placid Speed Skating Club.

The event is open to both Americans and Canadians who compete at various age groups and abilities.

Frost came first in the 500-metre event in the men’s Division III category, beating out fellow competitor Jonathan Furminger.

Furminger then turned the tables on Frost in the 1000.

Speed skating is one of the first sports Frost got involved in after he was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome in 2002. The condition leads to partial or total hearing and vision loss that worsens over time.

He currently has 15 per cent hearing (90 decibels) and eight per cent tunnel vision.

The former hockey referee was looking for a sport he could do on ice and he always wanted to try his hand at speed skating. It didn’t hurt that the Gloucester Concordes train at the Bob MacQuarrie Complex where Frost refereed many of his games.

After starting out in short track, he Kevin Frost soon took up long track as well. Competitive speed skating has taken Frost across Canada and overseas where he’s competed in Russia, Germany and Great Britain.

He took up rowing for five years and track and field before finally focusing on tandem cycling and golfing.

He won a silver medal last year in the tandem road race event at the Canadian championships. His goal this year is to finish on the podium in the Time Trial event with his new pilot, Phil Bergeron, who is also a former speed skater.
