SYNOPSIS SYNOPSIS ACT I

An ancient storyteller, Gower, tells us the adventures of Pericles, Prince of Tyre. We first go to Antioch, where Pericles tries to win the hand of Hesperides, daughter of King Antiochus. To do this, he must solve a riddle or be killed. Pericles deciphers the riddle, but it reveals that the King and his daughter are having an incestuous relationship. Horrified, Pericles flees Antioch. Antiochus sends an assassin, Thaliard, to murder Pericles. Now back in Tyre, Pericles fears that Antiochus will start a war in order to silence him. He appoints his counselor, Helicanus, to rule as regent and flees to Tarsus. He arrives in the famine-stricken land and delivers grain to King Cleon, and his wife, Dionyza. But soon after Pericles receives news that an assassin, Thaliard, is on his trail and he again sets sail. A storm leaves him the sole survivor of a shipwreck, washed up on the shore of Pentapolis. A group of fishermen rescue him and take him to the court. Simonides, the kindly King of Pentapolis, holds a tournament for the hand of his daughter, Thaisa. Pericles wins the tournament and the heart of Thaisa. They marry and Thaisa conceives a child. Pericles receives a message that Antiochus has suddenly died and sails for Tyre with his new bride, but another storm blows up causing Thaisa to go into labor. She dies while giving birth to a daughter, Marina. Thaisa is buried at sea sealed tightly in a chest. Grief-stricken, Pericles leaves the child to be raised by Cleon and Dionyza in Tarsus. Meanwhile, Thaisa’s coffin washes up at Ephesus, where the healer Cerimon revives her. Thinking that her husband and daughter died in the storm, Thaisa becomes a priestess in the Temple of Diana.

ACT II 14 years later

Marina passes her childhood in Tarsus, but Dionyza grows jealous that Marina is more beautiful than her own daughter, Philoten, and plots to have Marina killed. The murder is interrupted by the pirates, who kidnap Marina and sell her to a brothel in Mytilene. Meanwhile, Pericles sails to Tarsus to see his daughter. Upon arrival, Dionyza and Cleon claim Marina died in her sleep. Pericles vows to never wash his face or cut his hair again and falls into deep depression. At the brothel, Marina avoids losing her maidenhood by using her goodness and purity to influence clients to repent. One of these men, Lysimachus, Governor of Mytilene, falls in love with Marina. She leaves the brothel and begins to teach music and dance. When a ship from Tyre, bearing a catatonic old man, sails into port, Lysimachus greets the ship. Marina (unaware that this is her father) sings to the old man, causing him to speak and ask of her origins. She explains she is Marina, the daughter of a king, born at sea, where her mother died. Pericles disbelieves her at first but then realizes she is his daughter and rejoices. The Goddess Diana visits Pericles in a dream and instructs him to go to her temple in Ephesus. Once there, Pericles tells his tale before the altar. He is recognized by Thaisa, who has lived there as a priestess. Husband, wife and daughter are reunited. Pericles decrees that Thaisa and he will reign in Pentapolis while Marina and Lysimachus reign in Tyre, and our storyteller, Gower, ends the play.
