PROJECT BRIEF

The project brief is to design holiday cabins with 2 and 4 people - occupancy and provide spaces to accommodate different functions such as sleeping, eating, cooking, sitting, showering, with attention to sustainable features such as eco-toilet, eco shower, and electricity generation by using solar panels. Throughout the precedent research about cabins, the design thinking focuses on the internal spaces and experiences for the users by controlling light & windows and using materials that can evoke sense of tranquility and softness into the space.

The Attenborough Nature Centre at the site provides an educational facility, shop and refreshment point and car park for the reserve, accessed from Barton Lane, Attenborough. The Centre was completed in 2005, since which it has won a Gold award for eco-tourism. An article in BBC Wildlife Magazine listed it as number 9 in a top ten 'eco places in the world'. The facilities are open seven days a week, and the centre is surrounded by the ponds. There are also two public bird hides.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Area

The reserve now covers 145 hectares of lakes, wetland, grassland, and scrub. It sits at the confluence of the River Erewash and the Trent, and is part of an area designated as the Attenborough Gravel Pits Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The SSSI covers 226.6 hectares (560 acres) and extends westwards beyond the reserve, to the County Boundary.

Attenborough Village - Area

Attenborough is a suburban village in the Broxtowe borough of Nottinghamshire, England. It forms part of Greater Nottingham, and is 4 1â „2 miles (7.2 km) to the southwest of the city of Nottingham, between Long Eaton (to the southwest) and Beeston (to the northeast). The population of the ward within the Borough of Broxtowe taken at the 2011 Census was 2,328. It adjoins the suburbs of Toton to the west and Chilwell to the north. This village becomes the most potential users for the holiday cabin, as we need to pay attention to different types of users such as families and the elderly .

Potential Flood Areas There are large lakes formed by the flooded pits, known as Church Pond, Clifton Pond, Main Pond, Tween Pond, and Beeston Pond, plus drier areas of scrub and grassland such as Corbetts Meadow and Erewash field. There are also areas of native willow and woodland. The ponds have become the most important bird overwintering area in Nottinghamshire for shoveler and diving ducks.

As the land is located around the ponds, the potential path to the holiday cabin needs to be taken care of by providing a solid path above the muddy land. The site for the cabin is surrounded by trees and bushes that provide a natural view of the landscape which becomes the main attraction of the cabin.

The main concept for the plan is about defining the architectural promenade as Le Corbusier introduced it, by creating different experiences through movement in the spaces. Playing with compressed space in the entrance corridor and then expanding it with the open space in the middle of the living room and the kitchen to create a social connection between the users, has been thought in the process of designing the cabin to provoke human senses and experience within the space.

The exterior cladding for the cabin is made by the sequence of black timber batten to give a sense of blurring and blending with nature but at the same time, it gives a sense of presence in the site itself. The transparency and connection between indoor and outdoor are given by placing windows and openings to each part of the elevations. Having the standing seam zinc as the finishes for the roof gives a modern and contemporary look as it is also durable and functional in terms of harsh weather conditions.

The concept of the outdoor terrace is to mimic the notion of campfire activity. As it is raised on a platform, we design the sunken area so people can sit down and have a fire in the middle of the sunken space, while the sunken platform is made by metal grids, so it still allows the grass and the bushes to grow and pass through it to have the sense of experiencing the nature and become part of it.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad by Louis Kahn (Arnout Fonck, 2012)

The entrance corridor is designed to become a transitional space from outdoor to indoor space, which is mimicking the sense of entering a cave or a nest that intrigues primal human senses by controlling lights and applying the dark wood materials along the corridor. The space evokes a sense of tranquility while framing the nature landscape at the end of the corridor, providing a seat to relax at the corner.

Corridor to Bathroom & Storage Area

The kitchen and dining space are placed besides each other to control the movement of the space and provide sightlines for the users to the landscape through the windows in the seating area. Placing a skylight at the top of the kitchen area allows natural light to come in and lit the space. The wall finishes for the interior are using birch plywood to give a sense of lightness and softness, truly are contrast with the entrance corridor to engage different experiences within the cabin.

Bedroom - The idea for the bedroom is to elevate the bed on a platform to provide a better view of the nature. The skylight complements the space by providing a higher ceiling and natural light in a small space. Using the same material throughout the room gives the sense of softness and lighter feeling into the space.

The concept for the plan is about separating the private and social space by inserting the corridor as the main connector between the bedrooms and the living room & kitchen. The long narrow corridor with a glimpse of light at the end gives a sense of direction and movement towards the light.

The form of the cabin is a representation of a typical barn that we found in the UK by using a humble pitched roof that is built to withstand the snow, water, and wind, and also allow easier drainage to reuse the rainwater for plumbing purposes inside the cabin. The form gives the honest and nostalgic feeling of a home, while the facades are clad by the black timber panels as it elegantly merges with the surroundings, camouflaged by its dark shell against the outskirts of the landscape.

Your Black Horizon by Olafur Eliasson (Cameraphoto Arte, 2005)

The entrance corridor becomes the pathway to other spaces. It acts as a connector between social and private spaces. Lit by a small strip of light and window at the end of the corridor, the space is covered by dark brown wood panels to provoke human senses and emotion as the users entering the space.

Controlling the light is very important in this project as well as the movement inside the space.

An L-shaped kitchen is provided to accommodate the utilities of cooking and washing dishes for 4 people occupancy. The slit of the window in the middle of the wall frames the view to the landscape and allows the morning light to come into the dining space & kitchen area.

Setting a balance between light and darkness, the space evokes a sense of calmness, a ‘sanctuary’ for the users. A hint of brass at the shade of hanging lamp gives a nice little detail and strip of light at the kitchen shelf provides a nice ambience and functional usage for the kitchen.
