FOOTBALL WRAPS UP SEASON WITH DOMINANT ROAD WIN The Orioles finished out the 2016 campaign with a decisive road win to help them finish just over the 500 mark at 5-4. English Valleys had no answer for Springville as the O’s scored early and often, cruising to a 60-6 win. Sophomore speedster Zach March took the opening kick from the Bears and returned it all the way for an Oriole touch down. Senior play caller Cavanaugh Riley threw to a wide open Andrew Blakely for the two point conversion and Springville held an 8-0 lead after just 14 seconds of play. On the Bears next possession, Senior linebacker Seth Blake laid a hit on the ball carrier forcing a fumble and Blakely was there to fall on it. Two plays later Riley hit March for a 26 yard touch down and with James Fitzgerald’s kick, the O’s had a 15-0 lead. English Valleys would punt away their next possession but a bad snap set the Orioles up on the Bears 13 yard line. Just one play later, Blake ran it right up the gut for an Oriole score and the point after extended their lead to 22-0. Both teams exchanged possessions before the Oriole offense took the field, starting from their 36 yard line. Riley ran a keeper and kept on going for a 44 yard run and touch down and with just 1:27 in the first quarter the Orioles were on top, 29-0. The second quarter opened up with a Springville turn over but the defense kept putting the hurt on and English Valleys had nowhere to go. After a punt, the O’s had the ball right at mid field and Riley threw a screen pass to Blake and he turned it into a 40 yard score. The score was 36-0 and the woes for the Bears continued. After another punt the Orioles had great field position again, this time at their own 38 yard line. Riley scampered all the way to the goal line to give Fitzgerald another PAT and add 7 more to their score. English Valleys managed a first down on their next possession but March picked off a pass and set the Oriole offense up at their own 19. Riley hit March for a 33 yard catch at the Bears 28 and with .01 seconds on the clock, Coach Martin called a time out. What followed was a James Fitzgerald field goal—a FOURTY FIVE YARD field goal! (pictured above) That kick sent the O’s into the half time break with a 46-0 lead. The second half opened with the Bears having to punt after 3 quick unsuccessful downs . Springville started on the EV 33 yard line. Senior Austin Kirchmann is used to crushing the ball carrier but this time became one and was good for an 8 yard gain. Fitzgerald got the call and made the most of it as he ran for a 15 yard score, then he kicked the extra point and the Orioles were on top, 53-0. On their next set of downs, the O’s began at their 25 yard line and it was the Senior big man Braden Oxley who lined up as the tail back. Oxley carried for a first down and then again and again to get us to 4th and 3. Riley got the Bears with the hard count and the O’s had the first down and went right back to Oxley. The third quarter ended with Springville facing third and 2 at the Bears 17. Oxley carried again and had it stripped but Kirchmann was there to pick it up and run it into the end zone for the Oriole TD. Fitzgerald’s point after made the score 60-0. Coach Martin pulled the Seniors with 1:06 on the clock and it was at the 48 second mark that the Bears picked up a touch down to make the final score 60-6. On the ground, Oxley (pictured right) had 12 carries for 41 yards, Fitzgerald had 3 carries for 26 yards and a score, Blake had 3 carries for 13 yards and a score and Riley had 6 carries for 85 yards and 2 scores. Riley (pictured left) only went to the air 3 times but was perfect for 99 yards and 2 scores. March had 2 of those catches for 59 yards and a score and Blake had the other for a 40 yard touch down. Defensively, Kirchmann had 8 tackles and Clark 7 and a half. Springville says goodbye to nine Seniors this year, Hunter Clark, Adam Fall, Nick Stuppi, Blake, Blakely, Fitzgerald, Kirchmann, Oxley and Riley. Nice job boys, it was a lot of fun watching you compete this season.

VOLLEYBALL WINS AND ADVANCES

It’s title time—as in state title and the Springville volleyball squad has their eyes set on a return trip to the state tournament. They ripped through their first opponent, a young, tough Cedar Valley Christian team, 25-13, 25-11 and 25-16. Coach Howard praised CVC, “CVC has had a great season and I have a great amount of respect for what their coaches have done this year. Abbey Pospisil is a volleyball player, and to be a freshman, with her skill and high volleyball IQ, she has a high ceiling. CVC gave us everything they had. We are a little bigger and a little faster at positions but they did a nice job exposing some areas of our defense with some well placed swings”. Junior powerhouse Alyssa Jaeger (pictured right) was tops with 13 kills and Mikayla Nachazel (pictured below left), another Junior powerhouse had 12. Junior talents Rylee Menster (pictured above left) and Sami Johnson led the team in digs with 18 and 12 respectively while Madi Wagaman, another stellar Junior, led the team in solo blocks with three of the team’s seven. Coach Howard added that “Our group is a 'lunch pail' group. They did what they could to follow the game plan but in the end took what they were given and executed well when it mattered. We were excellent on 1st ball side outs in serve receive and blocked really well in the 2nd and 3rd sets. I was really happy with our overall performance, regardless of some of the issues along the way to the win. I am looking forward to the next challenge. Belle Plaine on Thursday”. We might need the National Guard to patrol the town because every breathing soul will be in Machovec Thursday night—see you there sports fans. (Photos provided by Karlie Nulle)
