Thirteen SCC Sports Section representatives gathered at the Padang Restaurant on Friday, 3 May 2013 to celebrate, recognise and honour Members for their sporting contributions to the Club and achievements in their respective sports/competitions for the year 2012. A specially arranged photo booth allowed Members present to take the opportunity to capture fond memories with fellow Section Members. One of the highlights of the evening was a delightful opening performance by celebrated sand artist, Ms Stephanie Donna Khoo, who skilfully crafted graphic symbols representing SCC’s 13 Sports Sections with the use of sand and a deft touch of her fingers. Throughout the performance, loud cheers from the audience echoed from different corners of the Padang Restaurant in eager anticipation as each symbol emerged in front of their eyes. The Sports Awards commenced after the opening address by SCC President, Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and a welcome address by Chairman, Games Control Mr Sher Baljit Singh. The emcee for the night was the charming Mr Paul Foster. General Committee Members were invited up on stage to present a total of 22 awards to the winners, who were nominated by the individual Sections and selected by a judging panel. This year’s sports awards was true to its “Oscars” theme as the awards ceremony was first presented, followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner and an after dinner party where everyone let their hair down and danced the night away. Our warmest congratulations to all Awards recipients and we look forward to greater sporting success in the years to come.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD This year, the most prestigious award, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to a long-standing Member of 29 years, none other than current SCC Deputy President, Mr Ananda Kumar. Ananda joined the Club in 1984 as a Junior Sports Member playing Rugby and became a full-fledged Member in 1987. By 1998, Ananda had already participated in winning 12 Premiership titles for the Club. He was the 3rd Team Captain for six years (2002 to 2008) and the team won the league and cup for all six years consecutively. He was also a veteran of the SCC International Rugby Sevens – playing for 11 years. Ananda also represented Singapore at various national and regional games up till 1994. Ananda was also an active Soccer Section Member and represented the Club from

1990 to 2009. He has also been an active Billiards & Snooker Section Member (since 1993) and is the current champion for the White Ball Handicap Tournament. Off the field, Ananda held several key positions in the Club. He was the Billiards & Snooker Section Committee Member and Captain (from 1993 to 1998) and the Social, F&B and Rules & Membership Subcommittee Member from 2002 to 2012. Ananda rose from being a General Committee Member (from 2007 to 2009) to take on the senior post of SCC’s Chairman, Games Control Board (from 2010 to 2012). IBF World Balut Championship Trophy Article by Oliver E. Andersen The International Balut Federation (IBF), an institution for people with an appetite for life, was founded in 1972 by four Danes who at the time, resided in Bangkok. It quickly spread throughout Asia/Oceania and then on to the rest of the world. It later founded the annual IBF World Championship, which since 1976 has been played around the globe, seeing numbers rise from a few players to over 300. Oliver E. Andersen started his balut career in 2000, when he joined the Singapore Branch of IBF. That year he participated in his first Wold Championship in Rio De Janeiro and won the dubious title of lowest scorer among 180 players, as well as the Yellow Jersey, signifying the player with most stamina in terms of limited sleep and intake of refreshments over the fourday event – a title he regained in the following year's tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since then, the string of championships have taken place in Dubai, Denmark, Phuket, Montreal, Cape Town, Riga, Singapore (with a tournament hosted in the SCC), Beijing,

12

THE PADANG | July / August 2013

Bangkok, Prague and finally Kota Kinabalu. All of which Oliver took part in. During the 2010 Championship in Bangkok, Oliver and his playing partner, Claus Ringgaard rose to the task, and narrowly made the final in doubles, in which a magnificent game saw them victorious, but only after the last dice had rolled! This obviously could not have been possible without the rigorous training received in the SCC Balut Section over the years. As it is required when winning a trophy under the IBF Banner, it must be shown in a prominent place relating to the winner, and what more suitable an honour than having one’s trophy and story immortalized at the SCC's fabulous sports bar, Stumps. Olli, as he's known to friends, will be off to the World Championship in Aalborg Denmark in July and is hopeful to bring back more silverware to be displayed in his trophy cabinet in Stumps and the SCC.

2012 Pikes Sangiovese Carmenere Rose, Clare Valley $48.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass Intense, bright cherry fruit with crisp, clean acid balancing the wine out nicely. A bit more “oomph” than last year’s model and a touch drier, but equally as drinkable.

Four early SCC Presidents

T

Article by: Steve Thompson Photograph courtesy: Winson Saw his photograph is a detail of a larger one taken at Government House (now the Istana) in 1893 to mark the departure from Malaya of the Governor of the Straits Settlements, 1 Sir Cecil Clementi Smith.

Clementi Smith had earlier served as the third President of the Singapore Cricket Club (1883). Besides Clementi Smith, three other SCC Presidents are shown in the photograph 2 Arthur Philip Talbot (fifth President, 1888 and 1892), 3 Major Henry E. McCallum (sixth President, 1893 - 1895) and 4 Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham (10th President, 1902 - 1903). Like Clementi Smith, Swettenham was also a Governor of the Straits Settlements, from 1901 - 1904.

26

THE PADANG | July / August 2013

The photograph also shows 5 Sir Ernest Woodford Birch, a prominent SCC member who went on to become Resident of Perak, and 6 Sir Hugh Clifford, who much later was Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1927 to 1930. Clifford was almost certainly a member of the SCC, though never President, and in 1927 he presented the Clifford Cup, for which civilian and armed forces teams played cricket, and which now occupies a prominent place in the Main Lounge of the Club. Finally, although of no known connection to the SCC, but of interest to students of Singapore history, is 7 Sir Charles Warren, who commanded the garrison here from 1889 - 1894. His greater claim to fame, however was immediately before this appointment from 1886 - 1888 when he was Metropolitan Police Commissioner in London during the Jack the Ripper murders. Jack the Ripper was never caught, and it is thought tht Warren was sent to Singapore as "punishment".

5TH SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB INTERNATIONAL SOCCER SIXES TOURNAMENT 2013 SATURDAY 18 MAY & SUNDAY 19 MAY 2013 Artilce by Owen Monaghan, 2013 Soccer Sixes Tournament Chairman The 2013 Soccer Sixes came and went in a hazy blur! The fifth tournament year was a progressive success from previous years and spectators saw a higher level of team participation from professional teams such as Australian giants Newcastle Jets, Thailand's' Chonburi and Singapore's very own Courts Young Lions. The football on show was fast, furious and exciting for the spectators around the superb looking Padang during the weekend. The tournament achieved its outcome and all involved were very happy with the results. The celebrity guest for the weekend was ex-Arsenal Nigel Winterburn who graced the Masters tournament leading the CLA All Stars to become champion once again. He was a gentleman throughout and a great ambassador for the 2013 Soccer Sixes Tournament. A big thank you to CLA for making this happen and putting the SCC Sixes on the map. The Open final saw the Newcastle Jets outclass their Thai opponents, Chonburi FC. Although there was some 28

champagne football being played by both teams, the A-league outfit found that extra level of performance and went on to win in a comfortable manner. The youth tournament saw some great matches being played throughout the weekend and these teams from under-privileged backgrounds showed some fantastic talent and attitudes with the Phnom Penh Crown FC emerging as winners versus a tough and skilled Thai team, Phuket Football Home. A special mention of superb play to the rest of the organisations and teams, Bali Sports Foundation, Hevea MK FC, Klung Toey Soccer Project and the Rumah Faith Home. Big thanks to all the sponsors who made the tournament happen every year and a special thanks to Dirk Paulsen and Raymond Weil, Shooter and Eddie from CLA, Glyn Vince from Rulewave and the SCC General Committee for providing support in more ways than one. Watch this space for an even better 2014 tournament!

SOCCER Section JUNIOR SPORTS MEMBERS By Owen Monaghan

T

he Soccer Section embarked on a development pathway for an Under 18 programme back in 2006 with the aim of introducing well-rounded individuals that could represent the Club to the highest level possible both on and off the field.

The initiative was kindly supported by Dirk Paulsen and Melchers & Co and led by Len Beschizza. This over time faced numerous challenges in recruiting the right players and faded over the years with regret and all the focus was put onto the NFL squad and this led to superb success of the past five years.  Presently, with the Clubs support, the SCC Soccer Academy is in operation on a weekly basis down at Dempsey Field and this is the future of the JSM programme, so hard work is being put in by some Soccer Section Members in nurturing the JSM’s of tomorrow. Special thanks to Hutcheon, Moeller, Norfolk, Bowden, Kianan, Starr, Smollett and Tahil who are doing a fantastic job each week! In this feature, we showcase two fantastic Junior Sports Members, Josh Douglas and Gavin Lee, who are playing for the First Team and NFL respectively. They are both superb onfield and have bags of talent between them.

Josh is aspiring to be a professional player and has the potential to do so whilst Gavin has been asked to represent professional U23 squads but remains with the NFL team whilst focusing on his studies. They both recently played in the Hong Kong 7s where they performed very well versus English Premier League teams, Sunderland and Man City. Off-field, both are great lads with great attitudes and are wellliked by their teammates.

For information on the JSM sponsorship scheme, please contact SCC Membership Department at 6338 9271 or email membership@scc.org.sg

ANNUAL DARTS INTERSECTION BULL’S EYE TOURNAMENT 2013

T

Scribe & Convenor: Mohietheen Fathima

he Annual Darts Intersection Bull’s Eye Tournament was an event to be remembered this year. A total of 12 Sections took part; Balut, Billiards & Snooker, Bowls, Bridge, Cricket, Darts, Hockey, Netball, Soccer, Squash, Tennis and a team from the General Committee. The Rugby and Golf Sections sent apologies and we are looking forward to their participation next year. The day kicked off with the bursting of blue balloons on the darts board by Chairman Games Control Board Sher Baljit Singh and General Committee Members Joyce Foster, Ong Chin Leong and George V. Abraham. Blue was the favourite colour of the late ex-president Len Foster who had kindly donated this trophy. The darts game of choice for this year’s Bull’s Eye Tournament was 501, Flying Start and Double to Finish. The first round was contested by all teams with the top six teams – Netball, Cricket, Tennis, Darts, Squash and Soccer, advancing to the second round where they were seeded into three groups. During each round a number of singles and doubles matches were played. As the teams played their first and second round they were provided with snacks of Gado-Gado and sandwiches and all Members enjoyed the special beverage promotions of beer, wine and cocktail. The Soccer, Tennis and Netball Teams won the respective groups and made their way into the final. After an interesting encounter with the outcome not settled until the very last throw, Soccer emerged champions. Well done to the Soccer Section and it must be noted they made a superb effort to have a team for the event.

All teams were then hosted to a buffet dinner. Thanks to Rajan Menon and Pernod Ricard for their sponsorship of whisky and fine wines which were enjoyed during dinner. GCB Chairman Baljit Singh, Ananda Kumar and Joyce Foster presented the medals to both finalists and the Bull’s Eye Trophy to the Soccer Section. It was a truly wonderful occasion enjoyed by all with wonderful memories and it is hoped that as a result of such events that the next time we walk into the Club, there are just that many more familiar faces we can have a chat or a drink with. It simply adds to our personal experience of membership of this great Club. We truly enjoyed the day of fun and laughter as it ended with a complimentary dance from the Soccer boys and songs sung by Joseph Yip from the Billiards & Snooker Section. It was a day that will be remembered by most of the Members of the Club. My heartfelt thanks to GCB Chairman Baljit Singh for supporting and ensuring most of the Sections take part in this event; Nigel Stearns, General Manager of the Club in supporting this event; Daljeet, Chovin and Becky for the Food & Beverage and the layout of the Oval; KC and his team for providing an immense service to all the Members at the event and to my Darts Exco team for making this possible! At the point of writing, the Darts Team is now on the throw to Ho Chi Minh from 28 June to 1 July. We wish them an enjoyable and successful trip. July / August 2013 | THE PADANG

At the first league match of the season on 15 May held at SRC, 18 teams participated with a total of 72 players. Anwar Gaffoor scored a remarkable 167. It’s the second highest score in over 30 years of balut, with four people having scored a 169. Congratulations to Anwar! The league Committee has already “engraved” your name on the trophy for presentation in October, for I strongly doubt if a 167 will be beaten. At that same event, NUSS were the winners, but there was a mere 40 points between first and eighth positions.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

JACKIE LOW

It is with great regret that Jackie Low passed away on 19 May 2013. Known throughout the Balut fraternity as “Chap Chap” Jackie’s passing was sudden, but peaceful. Jackie was a baluteer of some distinction for over 30 years. He attended every monthly in-house meeting and was a regular Tour Member for the Section. We send our deepest sympathies to Mary, Irene, Bob and his grandchildren. Jackie will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. The Section has a busy programme for the next few months – our in-house meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month. League matches every third Wednesday. We are hosting the Annual Triangular Tournament on Saturday 27 July between NUSS, IA, and SCC. A pairs Invitational on 31 August with players coming from the Kota Kinabalu Yacht Club, Sabah Golf & Country Club, The British Club Bangkok, the Kinabalu Club and pairs from the Singapore Clubs. Congratulations to our Captain Raj Kumar on winning the Section’s Sports Award for 2013.

Scribe: Tan Bak Choon | Convenor: Victor Yeong The Billiards & Snooker Section have officially begun their new term by electing a new committee. Convenor Jason Tan chaired his last meeting at the Billiards & Snooker AGM which was held on 19 April 2013 at the Gilmour Room. Immaculate in holding his court, he answered all questions and satisfied all queries. The new Convenor, Victor Yeong was unanimously supported while Captain, Tan Bak Choon was arm twisted into his position. Captain, Matthew Lim thought he wrote better and was elected as the Secretary. The Section was very pleased to welcome new comers Rangachari Raghavan as Treasurer and coopted Committee Member Sunil Sabnani into the Committee. Joseph Yip retained his seat as a co-opted Committee Member and this year, ex-convenor Jason Tan was also co-opted into the Committee. We look forward to the exciting programmes planned ahead for the year 2013. A key highlight from the AGM was the superb array of food; Angus Roast Beef no less! The pasta station was a big hit amongst the Members as well. With the business end of the meeting completed, the Members mingled and enjoyed the evening with a glass of whiskey in tow. Finally, watch out for more announcements from your new Secretary, Matthew Lim as yours truly will retire from writing!

BOWLS BONANZA! The Bowls Section has had a good run over the past weeks. At the SCC Annual Sports Awards extravaganza, our young bowlers Shermeen and Christian were anointed “Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year”. T. Velu, a legend in his own right who has been involved in every conceivable post in the Balut, Billiards & Snooker and Bowls Committees for many long years was finally recognised for his doggedness and devotion to the Club and sports, and earned himself the “Spirit of Sports” Award 2013. SCC Singles (Men) champions

Convenor, Prem Anand who appears to be on some kind of adrenalin rush in recent months, also won the SCC Men’s Singles championship with Edmund and Melvin following closely in second and third places. In the Ladies Singles, Lew Foong emerged the winner with Ming Li in second place.

Bowls bonanza at the 6th Annual Sports Awards 2013!

At the National Triples played on the Tanglin Green, 5 & 10 May, our bowlers fared exceedingly well. Convenor Prem/Hui Kai & Melvin (skip) secured an easy victory, retaining the title for the second year, whilst Ming Li (skip)/Shermeen and Virginia won the Ladies Triples. Our longstanding Convenor and subsequently, Secretary of the Bowls Section, George Abraham Esq. was escalated to stratospheric heights in the General Committee (GC) during the AGM in April and Ganesh Ramanathan replaced him as Secretary of the Bowls Section.

Finally, the good health of any Sports Section is evident when its overseas tours are oversubscribed. That is precisely what happened with our forthcoming visit to Hong Kong for the 12th Annual Interport/Triangular Games in August. A selection committee comprising Convenor/Captain, Vice-Captain Hui Kai and two senior bowlers, Chai H. Y. and K. C. Chew was set up and tasked to make the tough decision of selecting an optimum number of just 21 players.

Scribe: Rachna Anand & Anthony Egerton Convenor: Anthony Egerton SECTION NIGHT There was an excellent turnout at the recent SCC Bridge Section's Labour Day event held on Thursday 2 May 2013 in the Gilmour Room. A total of 26 players participated in a competitive, yet very convivial evening of Duplicate Bridge that was complemented by a delicious and generous buffet spread. Everyone had a most enjoyable time and is looking forward to the next special event. The emerging winning pairs were the teams of Jasbir Kaur & Mike Sharples and Stephanie Hodges & John Martens. SPORTS AWARDS NIGHT The SCC 6th Sports Awards night had, for the first time, representation of the Bridge Section in its annual celebration on the 3 May 2013 at the Padang. It was indeed a proud moment for us to be celebrating the best in sports and sportsmanship together with the other Sports Sections. It was an evening of celebration. Dedication and hard work was recognised and the deserving were awarded, to honour the best sportsman, sportswoman, Sports Section and service for the past year. Bridge Section' first Convenor, Howard Haythornthwaite was awarded the Spirit of Sport Award for his selfless service. In his absence, the present Convener Anthony Egerton received the award. The presentation and award ceremony was conducted in the Padang with a grand flair with a generous and sumptuous dinner buffet on the terrace followed by an excellent musical entertainment in the Gilmour Room with an open bar capped the evening on a happy and high note.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Howard HAYTHORNTHWAITE SCC Bridge Section's first Convenor, Howard Haythornthwaite passed on peacefully while in Perth Australia. He will be dearly missed by the Section Members, not just for his gentle manner but also for the work he put in to help make the first SCC Bridge Section a reality. Our heartfelt prayers are with his family in this time of grief.

INTERMEDIATE BRIDGE Since May, we have been having talks on Intermediate Bridge by Bridge Coach, Carl Parker before the regular game of Duplicate Bridge to help all those who have been playing Bridge for a while now. Please feel free to join us on our regular Monday evening games in The Oval.

BORDER AND BRADBURY ENTERTAIN SCC ON EVE OF ASHES TOUR Scribe: Steve Blaxhall | Convenor: Trevor Larbey

With the Singapore Cricket Club Cricket Section set to embark on a historical tour to the United Kingdom, a group of SCC Members organised an unforgettable private event, at a full capacity Padang Restaurant, with legendry former Australian Cricket captain, Allan Border and former Olympic champion short track speed skater, Steven Bradbury. It was a night of copious eating and drinking, punctuated with entertaining speeches and a fascinating Q&A session.

Allan Border (AB) is one of Australia’s most successful cricketers and visited SCC ahead of, yet another, highly anticipated Ashes series. As it says on Cricinfo, “In a nutshell he is the epitome of the fighting Australian.” Border played 156 games for Australia captaining 93 times and rebuilding an Australian team, that went on to dominate world cricket in the late 1990s and 2000s. Border enjoys a connection with SCC through his son, Dene, who currently plays for the 1st and 2nd Division teams in the Cricket Section. Steven Bradbury came to prominence at the 2002 Winter Olympics, after all of his opponents were involved in a last corner pile-up in the final, giving him the gold medal. Since his retirement from speed skating, he has turned his hand to motor racing and commenting. He was even a contestant in the second series of the Australian TV show, Dancing with the Stars. In 2007, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

We wish to give special thanks to our event partner, British Airways, for bringing AB and his wife Jane to this special event, to the Members who organised the event spearheaded by Brad Paterson, Ash Raivadera and Simon Taskunas, and the SCC Events and F&B staff who worked tirelessly throughout the night. The dinner was an opening for the Section’s most ambitious tour ever and, in its size, unprecedented for any single Section within SCC. The SCC Cricket Section has rapidly grown since 2007 and this tour to the UK, only highlights this. There are around 40 players and 30 family members travelling to the “Old Dart” for what will be 12 days of both competitive and hard fought fixtures, interspersed with imaginative and enjoyable social occasions, as well as, of course, the famous Ashes series!

The teams will play and visit some of the most historical, and picturesque, cricket clubs in the UK, including: Marylebone Cricket Club (our reciprocal club), The Royal Household CC at Windsor Castle, Sevenoaks Vine CC, The Griffin CC, Sussex Martlets at Arundel Castle, Blackheath CC, Lloyd’s CC, Abinger Hammer CC, Teddington CC, Cuckfield CC, Goodwood CC, the Honourable Artillery Company CC, Bourne CC and the Reigate Priory CC.

Scribe & Secretary: Venkat Iyer | Convenor: Trevor Larbey SCC ANNUAL SPORTS AWARDS The Section won several awards for the performance in 2012 including the “Junior Sports Feat of the Year” – Winning SCA U/16s League. Thanks to the efforts of Peter Brooks, the “Sports Feat of the Year” – Arun Vijayan and the “Section of the Year” – a recognition of the efforts of the entire Section through the year on and off the field. SCA LEAGUE All our league teams have been performing very well over the last two months and have won 40 matches while losing just eight to non-SCC teams during the season. The Lions after a rain-affected start are back with a bang winning four games in row. Cougars, Cheetahs, Jaguars, and Pumas have won all their games except one game each, while Tigers and Panthers have sprung back strongly after a couple of early setbacks. There have been some terrific individual performances during the last two months including Simar Miglani’s 5/14; Kulshan’s 5/15; Ben King 103; Shorab 83* (70); James Newman 82(44) and 5/16; and JSM Yohan’s three wickets early in his league debut. Full details are available in the weekly newsletter, BAILS published by Push Sharma. SOCIAL CRICKET While the Saturday XI has had mixed results in their busy schedule they continue to tour and host visiting teams. The Section hosted the Phuket Cricket group and won a well fought game at the Padang with many of the players due to travel to Phuket later in the year for what could be an interesting return match.

SCA Junior League The SCA Junior Cricket League sprang into action in late May and will run through to late July. The league contains six of the senior clubs in Singapore and the SCC is attempting to defend their champion status. As we write, the SCC Under 16 has won their first two league fixtures and well positioned to qualify for the championship playoffs. The highlight of the season so far has been a successful chase of 180 runs against a talented side from IA. Three of the SCC juniors got past 40 in the innings to show a maturity in their run chase that belies their relative youth. Additionally, two SCC JSMs have been selected to the Singapore under-16 National Development squad. Congratulations to Brigu Iyer and Shan Pervaiz on their selection. As a precursor to it the SCC is proudly presenting an evening with Allan Border, the legendary Ashes winning Australian captain. We will also be hosting matches of the ACC event in August. The next two months would see us trying to re-establish ourselves as the premier cricket club in Singapore by taking honours (top two) in all the five divisions of the SCA League we compete and we are well positioned to do it. Wishing our teams the very best.

After four hours of sweltering heat and banter, the scores were so close that it came down to the final match that was eventually drawn, resulting in Kluang retaining the trophy 6 to 5. Well done to them! As tradition commands, we all then retreated back to the SCC barracks for the post whisky drinking competition at the Stumps Terrace, where a couple of prizes were presented to nearest pin and longest drive. These went to the following chaps: Scribe: Daniel Morby | Convenor: Jurgen Martiens Our May game pitched us against our old foes Kluang Golf Club, from across the border. These matches have historically been very friendly and jolly; so jolly, we have had a habit of letting them beat us by a country mile. Would things change this time round? Our recent form in Interclub matches saw a big improvement over the past 12 months, probably due to our ability to consume more beer before and during the game than our opposition. The match took place at Marina Bay Golf Club – probably the best public golf course in Asia, they claim. Maybe they need to include Hong Kong in their evaluations next time the voting takes place. After a gallant effort from Captain Salts to round up 24 troops for Team SCC, we stuck to our tried and tested tactics and advice the opposition to turn up three hours before their tee-times, where there was not much else to do but consume copious amount of “Tigeraid”. First off for the SCC was our gallant Captain, who obviously felt the pressure of going first with the gallery of 47 players watching him, proceeded to chip his driver into the pond 15 feet left of the tee box, something quite a few others managed to do as well. This could have been due to the pressure, the searing heat some would say, but I think was due to the free flowing “Tigeraid”. Twelve matches finally departed the first tee, on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year and not a breath of wind in the air for the entire day. The match turned out to be very social indeed, with balls and players cris crossing fairways to say hello from time to time, and sometimes firing the odd shot across the bows to encourage fast play (nearly had you, Jurgen!).

Thanks to our friends from Kluang for a great day out and we look forward to our visit to Kluang’s mountaineering golf course next year. Next up, was the Inter-Sports Club Golf Tournament 2013 – 2nd Leg, hosted by the Tanglin Club at Ria Bintan on Friday, 31 May. We struggled a bit for this off-shore event, with a few forced drop outs at the last minute, thus weakening the team. Nonetheless, we managed to field more players than the Tanglin Club, who after suggesting and organising the event, had only 10 players. Still, they must have been their best 10, as they still managed to beat us! We finished sixth on the day, our lowest placing since the competition started three years ago. The winners on the day were the Singapore Swimming Club, who I believe are top of the table this year. Well done to them! We will be back, I promise, with a better turn out of players next time. Next up will be the Interport match against Royal Selangor Club from the 19 to 21 July. This is always a fun road trip, so please put your name forward to the Committee and pledge your allegiance to the SCC shirt. Other notes for your Filofax would be the Annual Golf Championship at Serapong Course, Sentosa on 12 September, the 3rd Leg of the ISCGT on 30 August (venue to be confirmed) and the Annual Pot Games against The Tanglin Club at Jurong Golf Club on the 26 September. Please make a note to keep these days free.

THE SEASON IN FULL SWING LADIES LEAGUES With three ladies teams playing in their respective leagues this year, the drive for success throughout the Section has never been greater. The 1st XI is so proud and honoured to have been the recipient of the “Team of the Year” award from SCC at the Annual Sports Awards and they are keen to show how deserved they are of this accolade by striving for further success for the Club. A team photo will soon be hanging in the Men’s Bar (if it’s not up already) and it is something that all female Sports Members should be proud of. The ball is well and truly now rolling for the ladies of the Club. At the time of writing, the 1st XI is creeping up the table looking for another top finish to replicate their league victory of 2012 and it’s a real possibility with a run of victories recently over the Dutch Club and Tornados to get them back on track. The 2nd XI has been unlucky with a few results but a rousing victory against Crescent at the end of May in sweltering conditions showed the team’s grit and determination and bodes well for the remainder of their matches. The 3rd XI has only two games left in their season in what has been a hectic few weeks of matches. With Roz assisting in the coordination of the team and the players rallying hard each week, there is great promise for seasons to come and perhaps we’ll one day see a fourth ladies team too! With a tour to Hong Kong on the horizon for the ladies in September to play Hong Kong Valley and then the annual trip to Bangkok for the Section, there is plenty to look forward to for the remainder of the year. The 2nd XI is currently joint third with Ting Hao topping the scoring sheet. They have eight games remaining to push Hollandse Club for the title and are doing all they can to inch closer. The 3rd, 4th and 5th XI combined squad played in the Hockey Liga this year and finished third in the ladder of ten teams which was a fantastic result. The teams for the Division 2 to Division 4 teams have just been decided and each team’s aim is to take the title. Good luck guys! MAZENOD COLLEGE & FAREWELL MARK PATTERSON Mazenod College made their biennial visit to Singapore in April to play a friendly on the Padang. A very competitive game turned rather one-sided in the second half with the teenagers seeming to run out of steam against the more “senior” gentlemen of the Club. SCC won the game 7-1. The game also served as a farewell for Mark Patterson who has been with the Club for five years. He has played in the 1st and 2nd XI and was part of the Lion Cup winning team of 2010. Mark returns to New Zealand where he will be playing more hockey than rugby!

SCC Hawks 2013

END OF SEASON CELEBRATIONS Article by: Katherine Signy | Convenor: Kerry Jane Brown The start of May saw the end of the annual SCC Netball friendly league, a two-tier league organised by the Netball Section to allow teams match practice before the start of the Energizer National League. Congratulations go to the Sport Ready 1 team who triumphed in Division One and NZCC 2, who came top of the pile in Division 2. The SCC teams put on a respectable show, with the Hawks finishing the season in joint second place of Division One, and the Eagles coming third in Division 2. The SCC league takes a lot of hard work and organisation – thank you to Mandy and Sadaf for all your efforts and to Nan for her umpire coordination. In addition, the league would not happen without all the teams and players who troop to Kallang every week, so well done everyone on a great season. The trophies were presented to the winning teams by GC Member, Ms Joyce Foster, at a lively end-of-season party at the SCC on 10 May. The party was held to celebrate the end of the SCC league and the Singapore Mixed Netball League. We had a great turnout for the Falcons, our mixed team, this season with a lot of boys coming along to have a go.

performances. We have a lot of mixed netball coming up over the next few months and are always on the lookout for guys wanting to join in. The Energizer National League kicks off at the end of May and sees the Hawks and Ospreys challenging in the ladies league, along with the Falcons in the mixed league. Good luck to everyone involved and we will let you know how the teams get on! As we announced in the last edition, we are delighted to have secured our first Section sponsor – The Retrospective Bar and Grill. The relationship got off to a great start with a champagne fuelled launch party, held on 20 April and we are excited about what’s to come! Netball is a great way to meet people, keep fit and most importantly have a good time. CLUB RUGBY AT ITS BEST – HOSTING AND TOURING AT THE SCC With last season well behind us, April and May was a period of hosting touring sides from Doha and the NZ Navy and going on tour ourselves with a proper weekend trip to Jakarta to play against the Jakarta Komodos. The end of April saw the visit of Doha Vets from Qatar who brought an impressive touring squad of 30, followed by our regular visitors the NZ Navy side from the HMNZ ship Te Mana – all on the same weekend. HMNZ TE MANA SINK SCC ON PADANG HMNZ Te Mana brought along the strongest team they have had for some time, featuring half of the NZ Navy side, who were determined to avenge their last two defeats they had suffered at the hands of the SCC. However, after such a long and arduous season for the Club where some of the Prems and Tankards had to play a marathon 12 games in five months, and faced with the prospect of a difficult match many players opted to go shopping and do their laundry that day. But 16 hardy souls turned up, pulled on the black and gold and put in a good shift in on what was an incredibly hot day on the Padang. A good NZ Navy team eventually ran out 37-12 winners but the SCC fought them all the way. DOHA BEAT GROWLERS IN ARM – WRESTLE IN THE HEAT Next up were the Doha Vets who with a squad of 30 played the SCC Growlers in the 5pm match. It was still sweltering hot and both teams toiled in the heat. With a much bigger, heavier pack it was Doha who had the edge upfront, but with a tremendous effort from the backline who tackled like whirling dervishes, neither team threatened the whitewash until just before half-time when Growlers talisman Swarthy Chris Metcalf was laying injured with a horrific eye injury, and the Doha pack steamrollered over the try-line to take the lead, 5-0. Second half was much the same with the tired old Growlers unable to get out of their own half and when Doha scored another try with 10 minutes left it was all over. 10-0 to the Doha Vets. A fabulous evening of beer, curry and rugby stories was then held on Stumps Terrace with both Doha and HMNZ Te Mana joining us for a memorable night, in the finest traditions of SCC Rugby.

SCC then fully dominated the next 30 minutes, with strong defence and aggressive attacking moves well-orchestrated by Jonty and Tom Duffy. During this period, Matt Turner and Tom Duffy scored two more tries, giving SCC a 19-7 lead at halftime. It looked like Komodos had reached their physical limits, and would struggle for the rest of the game but they came back harder and delivered an intense 20 minutes where their forwards dominated the game and destroyed SCC defence. Komodos caught up with the score thanks to two powerful forward tries, including a classic 5m pushover scrum that SCC could not contain. 19-19 AND 20 MINUTES TO PLAY Despite a bench decimated by recent pre-tour injuries, which forced talented players such as Chesney, Sam Flint, young Harry, Olie Rey and Mandeep to attend this tour as sober spectators only, SCC still injected extra resources and highly motivated players, getting in to make their mark and contribute to this contested game. Mark Hanley, Daire O’ Reilly, Ed Thwaites and Terry Noe made the difference, fuelling the team with great fighting spirit and amazing defence. After a Komodos scrum won by SCC with total commitment and smart hooking from Sam Blackwood, Simon Bourke and Stafford Baggot attacked the line and gained a penalty on the opposition 22m. Tom Duffy converted it, giving a three-point advantage. Last 10 minutes could be summarized by fierce combat and iron defence, from every single SCC player, that contained Komodos. Final result, a fine SCC win 22-19. Victory was well celebrated, with great hospitality by Komodos. Speeches and well deserved drinks were held at their new clubhouse, located in a building inspired by Tony Montana’s Miami mansion. Another great tour for the Rugby Section and a significant victory against tough opponents whom SCC have not beaten in Jakarta since the 1990s. Meanwhile on the same weekend with 30 players in Jakarta and 12 players on national team duty, the SCC were still able to field a team in the Annual Les Gaulois Tens Tournament. Led by a trim John Reeve, the experience of Adrian Chia and the ageing veteran Kevin Gibbons, the team managed to get to the Plate final. As to why it was not referred to as L’Assiette is anyone’s guess. With many familiar young faces back from college, university, national service and other noble pursuits, it was great to see the likes of Sean Fox, Declan Martens and Vignesh Krishnan pulling on the black and gold and cantering around the paddock. A busy couple of months but an enjoyable time for all involved with SCC Rugby.

SCC BEAT JAKARTA KOMODOS 22-19 The SCC touring team who flew from Changi to take on the Jakarta Komodos old rivals was a good mix of Prems, Tankards, Cougars and Growlers. After a fine Friday night when all tourists had plenty of time for rest and rehydration, the squad boarded the bus to the Komodos ground with great concentration and energy. Jakarta being Jakarta, the local bus driver got lost and it took almost two hours to reach the Komodos’ new pitch. This bus trip was so long that MC Matt Turner having run out of songs and jokes had no choice but to organise a geography quiz contest – a cultural first for SCC Rugby. It was obvious this game was not a joke for Komodos, who had clear intentions to add another victory versus SCC. They put up a team accordingly, starting with a nasty, big and experienced pack of forwards. From kick off, Komodos put huge pressure on a lethargic SCC team, in scrums, rucks and mauls, with big hits. They scored under the post after five minutes. 44

SCC Strollers 2013

we were confirmed as winners on the last game of the season. Exciting stuff!

Scribe & Convenor: Graham Dickson The Annual Soccer Section awards were held recently to coincide with the SCC Sixes Dinner. Several players were honoured including Heiko Moeller, Ronnie Smollett, Scott Starr, Simon Tan, Bruce Loggie, Boon, John Keh and Anthony Moulin. A very special Soccer Section “Lifetime Achievement Award” went to John Fernandez which was very well received. Congratulations to SCC Firsts, SCC Tigers and SCC Strollers on winning their respective leagues which is a real credit to the Section and reflects our strength in depth. The Section sent two teams to the HK Sevens recently. SCC Firsts drew with Sunderland 1-1 and managed to get to the semifinals before losing to KCC. SCC Tigers won through to the final of the Masters Plate and lost 1-0 to HKFC Veterans. It was a great weekend of football and a chance to mingle with several ex-professionals including Joe Jordan and Peter Beardsley. Our very own SCC Sixes was a success and the Open tournament was won by Newcastle Jets with Jurong FC winning the Masters tournament. SCC STROLLERS by Michael Drake After missing out on last year’s league title a few changes were made to the Strollers squad for the 2012/13 Equatorial Football League campaign. Still predominately an over-35s side playing in an open league, the Strollers proved a force to be reckoned with from the very start which culminated in the side becoming the EFL Champions in April of this year. The league went right down to the wire as

Goffy, Arsene Wenger, Shooter and Ray Parlour discuss bringing Arsenal to the Padang

In the course of the season we scored a 57 league goals (the third highest of all teams) and conceded a meagre 15 (the best in the league by far – essentially half of the next best team). The hallmark of the Strollers is the strong squad and the camaraderie that exists in the group. We try to play decent football and in many games it has been both a pleasure to play in and to watch (now again we have scrapped for a result too). To this end there is little to comment on individual contributions to our success – we win together, draw together and lose together. However, a few people do deserve a special mention. First and foremost, congratulations to Ronnie Smollet for being unanimously voted as our Player of the Year – a top man in top form. Also a fond farewell to Simon Tan and Naka-san, as both are moving away from Singapore and onto pastures new – two very nice guys who also happen to be very good players. You will be missed. Many of the Strollers have been at the Club for years and have represented (and won) for the SCC in various competitions (including four or five players from the early NFL days and plenty Cosmo league players from more than a decade ago). Now a bit older, a bit wiser but with enough in the tank to produce decent results we are all looking forward to next season and the defence of our title. SCC FIRSTS SCC Firsts won the Singtel Cosmopolitan Cup Final on 15 June beating Hotspurs 2-0 at Turf City. Goals from Anthony Moulin and Andrew Hutcheon won the game for the men in black and yellow. This trophy adds to the Singtel League title won earlier in May which means now, we have won the Singtel Cosmo League and Cup for the past four years. Sincere congratulations to Owen and all members of this excellent team.

Manmindar Sing (Convenor), Udai Singh (Men’s Captain), Andrea Nicholas (Ladies’ Captain), Bill Hatch (Treasurer) and Mahes Veluppillai (Social) agreed to continue for another year in their respective roles while Wai Keng thankfully agreed to return as Secretary. As the Section is exploring ways to further expand the range of activities, additional Members were co-opted onto the Committee. A lot of good suggestions were extended to keep the Squash Section alive and the Committee will be looking into this in the coming months. Despite the following day being a working/school day, many stayed behind to enjoy the food and drinks. ANNUAL INTERSECTION DARTS TOURNAMENT SATURDAY, 1 JUNE The Section was represented by Kingsley Wood, Rahil Devgan and Manmindar Singh. Whilst squash players are not particularly known for their “throwing” skills, we more than made up for it with dodged application. We won the first round match in a lively encounter with the Bowls teams. However, we met our match when we were up against the Soccer Section in the next round. Whilst we got better as the event went on as evidenced by more of the darts ending up on the board, we were roundly beaten by them for a place in the finals. We take consolation in that we lost to the eventual Champions. We will be back next year even stronger to mount a serious challenge as we plan to visit more pubs so that we can practice “throwing” more darts! HKFC INTERNATIONAL SQUASH 3S – 31 MAY TO 2 JUNE Six SCC teams travelled to Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Football Club Annual Team Tournament. Apart from clubs from Malaysia and Hong Kong, this year saw even greater participation from other clubs in Singapore, some of whom were debutants in this tournament. The HKFC was bustling with activities as it coincided with the British Lions – Barbarians international rugby event and the HKFC Professional Squash Association tournament. In the

THE PADANG | July / August 2013

The tournament proper kicked off on Friday evening with all our teams breezing past their first round opponents despite partying till the wee hours the night before. Most of our teams had three matches on Saturday but that did not deter anyone from having yet another “heavy” night on Friday – a tradition that has never changed. From HKFC to the streets of Lam Kwai Fong, you could see SCC players everywhere indulging in food, drinks and more drinks. Deprived of sleep and perhaps suffering from hangover for some, our guys woke up on Saturday ready to brave the challenges ahead, and brave they did! Everyone gave their wholehearted efforts in all their matches and performed really well. Unfortunately, some faltered and by the evening, only a few were left running for ultimate glory on Sunday. Needless to say, Saturday night was a big night out for everyone. Different groups headed out separately for dinner but met up thereafter at a karaoke joint to round up this trip’s entertainment programme. As many as 30 people turned up and it was a blast! Weary and tired bodies notwithstanding, our players were up bright and early Sunday morning to face the final challenges and the results show that we were certainly up for it: • • • •

Men’s Open Plate Finals – Champion SCC (Bryan Koh, Nigel Koh, Cheong Kah Wah) Ladies’ Open Finals – Runners-up SCC (Mao Shi Hui, Joannah Yue, Mao Shi Yuan) Ladies’ Open Plate Finals – Champion SCC2 (Sherilyn Ang, Andrea Nicholas, Emma Duncombe) Men’s’ Masters finals – Runners-up SCC1 (Terry Scott, Sarat Chandran, Nick Cochrane)

The tournament concluded with a prize presentation and sumptuous buffet luncheon that was enjoyed by all present. Peter Rogers delivered a short ‘Thank You’ speech on behalf of everyone who participated in the tournament. A great and enjoyable trip indeed!

SHOWING OFF OUR ON-COURT AND OFF-COURT PROWESS!

Taking on the visiting opposition...with our slices and dices!

In the last few months, there has been a lot of on-court as well as off-court action for the Tennis Section. INTERCLUB ACTIVITIES Following the SCC Tournament which saw top veterans grace our grass courts, the SCC tennis teams transferred those lessons learnt (including Mansour Bahrami’s bag of tricks!) to our Interclub Singles League matches. The Ladies A team faced stiff competition among other clubs, but emerged third in their division. The Men’s A, B and C teams put up a good fight and came in third in the Men’s A preliminary rounds, second in Men’s B preliminary rounds and third in the Men’s C division. Well done to all the players! Looking ahead, the Inter-club Knockout Doubles tournament will start at the end of June at Kallang Tennis Centre. Supporters are welcome to support the team! Pom poms and cheerleader outfits will be provided! SCHOOL’S OUT! Some of our Junior Tennis Members had yet another reason to celebrate this season. “Veteran” Junior Member Ong Shao Fang, Christine Fong and Chan Shuying finally graduated from their universities – NUS and NTU. Well done, girls and welcome to the wild world!

CONGRATULATIONS The SCC Annual Sports Awards was held in April and the Tennis Section would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our nominees and winners: • • •

Rehmat Johal – Ranked number 1 in Singapore, Federation Cup player and deserving of the title of “Sportsgirl of the Year”! Maddie Noda – Finalist in the “Sports Feat of the Year” category, having carved out a 15:2 win loss ratio in last year’s Interclub events. Yasu Noda – On-court and off-court jester with a tricky slice to boot. Winner of the “Spirit of the Sport” award.

It was a great night out at the club and a nice opportunity to recognise the top achievers and contributors to the sport. Well done!

SHARPSHOOTERS ARE WE The team of Vincent Boissac, Matt Dabbs and Kevin Cumbers put their sharp eyes and steady hands to the test and valiantly defended the Club’s Inter-section Annual Darts Intersection title which the Tennis Section won in 2012.

Eye of the tiger

After several rounds, the team made it to the finals against the Soccer team. In their quest for glory, Vincent gave the team an extra boost by scoring the highest number of points in the finals. Unfortunately, it was close, but not close enough to retain the title. Congratulations on our brave men for coming in runnersup in the Annual Darts Intersection!

TENNIS COURT BOOKINGS Following two months of repairs, the grass courts have re-opened. In addition to the grass courts, you can now book the two multipurpose hard courts daily from 9am to 6pm. And remember, the predominantly white dress code still applies!

Guess who's back? The King of Clay !

A TOUR DOWN UNDER? A section tour to Perth is tentatively planned for 12 to 15 September where we will likely visit the King’s Park Tennis Club. This tour depends very much on the level of interest of the Section Members, so register your interest now with Jolene How at jolene.how@scc.org.sg July / August 2013 | THE PADANG
