The Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s tournament is one of Asia’s oldest and most established tournaments and this year marks the 65th Anniversary of Singapore’s only rugby festival to be played at the magnificent Padang. 2012 will see this landmark tournament with a bigger stadium and for the first time, incorporating an international tournament and a Rugby World Cup 7s qualifier no less! The likes of Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore are familiar visitors to the SCC 7s but 2012 will see them compete in the Singapore leg of the Asian 7s Series, the last in the series that encompasses legs in Shanghai, Borneo and India. The Singapore leg of the series will also serve as the Asian qualifiers for all 12 competing Asian countries vying for a spot in Moscow for the 2013 7s World Cup. To see these nations compete sideby-side with the historic SCC 7s will be a sight to see for both new and regular visitors to this massive celebration of 7s rugby. Then what of the main event then? The SCC 7s will have its strongest line-up of teams ever to celebrate, with old friends as the likes of returning Champions Daveta Rugby from Fiji looking to defend their fantastic win last year. Ponsonby from New Zealand have looked dangerous on the New Zealand Club 7s circuit and are promising a dangerous mix of youth and experience this year. Penguins, who won the Ablitt
Cup in 2010, have been rumoured to have some key internationals from England in their ranks and while this is yet to be confirmed, the SA Academy will be making a welcome return to the Padang. Previously the SA Vipers, the South Africans have three Ablitt Cup wins in the bag and are looking to come back strong after a year’s absence. One of the new boys will be Bath Rugby who will be bringing an academy team with several players who have premiership experience. They have been participating in the JP Morgan Sevens series in the UK with other premiership clubs this summer. They will be managed by Danny Grewcock, the exEngland and British Lions second row. So some very highly competitive rugby in store on the Padang on the weekend of 2 to 4 November and with the Olympics a mere four years away where Rugby 7s will make its return, who knows, we might see the next Olympic champion on our shores! Don’t forget that this is the SCC 7s, so copious amounts of that famous hospitality, food and too much beverage for everyone will be on offer, with a bigger village area in store. So see you all on 2 to 4 November! SCC Members may collect their wristbands at the Member Services Desk for complimentary access to tournament upon the announcement.

I would like to keep Members informed that Mr Alan Jones, our General Manager/Secretary had resigned from his position as of mid September. Alan joined us more than five years ago shortly after the Club’s major $16 million renovation and development project. Challenges were abound at his time of joining the Club, during his past five years’ tenure with us, he has performed well, contributed significantly in key operations and financial areas and served the Club steadfastly. I have regretfully accepted his resignation and wish him well in his future endeavours. Meantime, recruitment of the new General Manager is underway and I will keep Members informed of the development accordingly. I urge Members to continue to be supportive of Club’s Management and to exercise care and concern over the Club’s matter and well-being. After all, we are a Members’ Club. AMENDMENT TO BYE-LAW A.3(k)(ii) ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT In keeping up with modern times, the General Committee had deliberated at lengths on reviewing the permitted use of laptops, iPads and similar devices on Club premises. We are pleased to inform Members the amendment to Bye-Law A.3.(k)(ii) has officially come into effect and has become binding on all Members with effect from 16 August 2012. “Laptops, notebooks, slate tablets such as iPads and similar devices are permitted to be used in the Sports Verandah adjacent to the Squash Courts, Courtyard, Stumps Bar, Stumps Terrace and Men’s Bar of the Club, in silent mode up until 6pm.” DESIGNATED AREA FOR DRIVERS In consideration for Members’ drivers, a designated waiting area located at the car park near St. Andrew’s Road has been set up with parasol and chairs. Members are reminded to instruct the drivers to the designated waiting area. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Our Cricket Twenty 20 Tournament took place over the weekend of 24-26 August. Nine teams from the region participated and vied for the Cup Final. Both players and spectators thoroughly enjoyed an entertaining weekend out here on the Padang! The Club proudly hosted the Padang Shield Games 2012 on 14 July. There were a total of nine friendly matches played between Singapore Recreation Club and us. This year, both Clubs’ teams were extremely competitive resulting in an overall draw in the Padang Shield 2012. PANJANG LEGACY CONTINUES... Club News
MEMBERSHIP Membership is tasked with meeting the sales budget of S$1.5 million a year to achieve our financial objective. Membership subscription fee goes into supporting the Club’s operation and is vital in sustaining the Club’s overall financial well-being. The Membership Department strikes a delicate balance in garnering increased sales, providing service standard to Members befitting a Premier Sports and Social Club, and upholding the Club’s Rules and Bye-Laws. Membership Department consists of three sub-departments – Membership Administration, Membership Sales and Members Services Desk. Reporting to the Rules & Membership Subcommittee, this department markets the various categories of Membership, reviews the Club Rules and Bye-Laws and concurrently, promotes discipline within the Club and attends to feedback from the general Membership. Apart from being the custodian of the Club Rules and Bye-Laws, Membership Department ensures all Members are well taken care of where Membership matters are concerned. Right from the onset of joining as a Member, registration of a Sports Section, applying for a car park label, to reservations for the Padang Restaurant, Membership Department takes care of the needs of our valued Members. Providing the best possible service to our valued Members is the mission of Membership Department.
Roseanne Toh Head of Membership Roseanne has been with the Club for more than two years. She oversees the overall administration and day-to-day operation of the department and ensures a healthy growth in Membership of all categories.

Serene has been with the Club for almost a year. She is responsible for the smooth processing of Members’ applications and oversees the general membership enquiries and feedback. Serene enjoys the dynamic environment and challenging nature of her job which allows her to grow at a personal level and meeting people from all walks of life.
As a very new member of this dynamic team, Marie hopes to be acquainted with the new Club environment and the challenges it brings. She added, “I want to learn as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. I will do my very best for the Club!”

Fiona Ann Lincoln Membership Sales Manager Fiona is no stranger to the Club or the general membership. She joined the Club in August 2009 as a Sports Executive, overseeing and assisting the Bowls, Golf, Tennis and Netball Sections. With this new appointment, Fiona will now undertake a more challenging portfolio in promotion and the administration of Membership sales.
MEMBER SERVICES DESK (MSD) As the “face” of the Club, our Member Services Staff ensures that Members are warmly welcomed the moment they step into the Club and attends to the general needs and enquiries of the Membership and their guests. This sub-department consists of five staff, who shares with us on their SCC life.

MARCOM
The Padang Magazine 2012
The small but efficient Marketing & Communications Department (Marcom) is the “glue” that binds the various departments and sections of the Club together. Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee, this department’s resolution is to make communication more Member-friendly through the bi-monthly Padang Magazine, weekly email blasts and the SCC website as well as creating awareness of the Club to the outside world. On the creative side, Marcom provides design support for all the Club Events and Tournaments and offers administrative support to Sports Sections and Tournaments in terms of sponsorships. In addition, the department oversees all publications of Club collaterals and ensures a fresh selection and sufficient stock of merchandise at the Souvenir Corner. Finally, this department oversees the Club’s archives and assures that all information and photographs on the Club’s heritage is properly stored for future reference. The department is run by Marcom Manager, Kairi Metsaots and assisted by Marcom Executive, Yani Saaban.
Kairi Metsaots Marcom Manager Kairi has been with the Club for more than a year, although Singapore has been home for the Estonian-born for the past four years. Within this exciting year, the Marcom department has been transformed into a strong and efficient entity; all thanks to the everlasting energy and passion Kairi has shared since. When we ask her if is she planning to stay for good, the reply, “Can lah!” is what you might hear.
Yani Saaban Marcom Executive Yani first joined SCC in 2003 as an admin assistant where she oversaw the daily administration of the Marcom Department. Her career progressed tremendously at SCC where she served for six and a half years. After a two-year stint, Yani returned to the Club in January 2012 doing what she does best – as a graphic designer, overseeing the publication of The Padang Magazine and all of the Club’s marketing collaterals, among others. She shares, “It’s great to be back in the Club and to feel at home again.”

FIJIAN PRESIDENT AND HIS DELEGATION FRIDAY, 17 AUGUST 2012
The Club was honoured to receive a special visit from the President of the Republic of Fiji, Brigadier-General Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, CF, LVO, OBE, MSD, OStJ on Friday 17 August 2012. President Nailatikau was accompanied by the Fijian Ambassador in Singapore and other delegates. Upon their arrival, the visitors were warmly welcomed by our Deputy President, Mr Michael Grice and GC Member Mr Steve Thompson who escorted them to a short Heritage Trail around the Club. After casual refreshments at the Main Lounge, President Nailatikau was presented with the SCC History Book and Club Tie as mementos. The visitors thanked the Club for the warm hospitality and the visit was thoroughly enjoyed especially for the President himself whose father was once an SCC Member back in the 1960s.
NATIONAL DAY AWARDS 2012 The Club congratulates
SCC 160th Anniversary Charity Drive In celebration of our 160th Anniversary, the Club will be organising a Charity Drive to raise funds for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. Members are able to make their donations via their membership account or by cheques. This donation to the Yellow Ribbon Fund is 2.5 times deductible. Donation Pledge Forms are readily available at the Member Services Desk or from our website. This Charity Drive will end on the 30 September 2012. The cheque will be presented to the Yellow Ribbon Fund on the evening of 13 October 2012 by President Col. (Retd) Gurcharan Singh at the Main Lounge. Entertainment will start from 8pm, followed by the cheque presentation at 8.45pm*.

More about the Yellow Ribbon Fund The Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF) is a registered charity and an Institute of Public Character (IPC). Established in 2004, YRF is devoted to the development and implementation of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for ex-offenders and support programmes for the families affected by incarceration. NEW HEAD, SPORTS & RECREATION
JANET NG
The Club welcomes our new Head, Sports & Recreation, Ms Janet Ng. Janet is no stranger to the SCC. She first joined the Club in 1997 as a Sports Executive and has 15 years experience in the sports and leisure industry. We spoke to Janet recently on her career and what she hopes to achieve now that she is back. Padang Magazine (PM): Tell us more about your career so far and your passion for the sports and leisure industry. Janet Ng (JN): I was trained in the engineering field and worked for two years in that industry. Being an active child, it was a natural progression for me to subsequently make a transition to the sports and leisure industry. I was fortunate to be able to represent Singapore in softball for 12 years and still find time these days to train and compete at the club level. Sports connects people and I like that about my job. As a Sports Executive in SCC, I learned a lot from ground up such as the various aspects of sports administration, which included planning and logistics, Member relations, etc. Being part of SCC’s first multi-sport section tour, consisting of 100 Members, to Yokohama Country and Athletic Club and the Organising Committee of the Club’s 150th Anniversary Charity Golf event were the memorable moments. One of the perks about working at SCC is the opportunity to interact and learn from local and foreign sports legends such as Jonah Lomu, Bryan Robson and Mario Kempes. From 2005, I worked in the capacity of an Assistant Sports & Recreation Manager at the British Club (Singapore), overseeing the Millennium Sports Centre’s operations which included
the gym pro-shop, academies (martial arts, tennis, squash and swimming), swimming pool and field facilities. In addition to handling the myriad of sports sections at the British Club, I was also involved in several higher profile mass events such as the UK International Olympic Council Ambassadors Meet-theMembers event during the 2006 International Olympic Council Session in Singapore, Annual Family Day, Neptune League Swimming Meets and opening of newly renovated Sports Centre. In 2009, I joined the then newly formed U Sports Department at the NTUC Club as a Manager to provide sporting opportunities for approximately 700,000 members and their families. Keeping up with the evolving sport and leisure trends (via continuing education and hands on practitioner experience), building a strong network and fostering successful collaborative partners was crucial during my three and a half years at NTUC Club. These are some of the unique strengths and experiences that I hope to leverage. PM: What is the most memorable experience in your career? JN: The two major annual events: basketball tournament and beach games were the most memorable and challenging from an administrative perspective. Both iconic events were held in the same month last September, for the first time, in Sentosa and I had to work on a very tight timeline. My team managed the events successfully and the 5000 participants and supporters had a safe and enjoyable experience. PM: What do you hope to achieve now that you are back in SCC? JN: I look forward to contributing to SCC and connecting with Members. Sports can be a great channel for physical and socioeconomic development. Creating value add in a premier sports club with such a rich heritage is going to be an exciting and enjoyable endeavour. I’m home... See you at SCC soon!

YARD SALE
THURSDAY, 21 JUNE & SATURDAY, 25 AUGUST 2012 The Club held its first Yard Sale on Thursday, 21 June and another at the Cricket T20 weekend on Saturday, 25 August in support of the Junior Sports Member (JSM) fund. Items on sale included an array of SCC merchandise, sports memorabilia, paintings, books, CDs and t-shirts and many more, all sold at marked down prices. In addition, there was also an attractive display of vintage bikes, courtesy of Chairman Games Control Board Mr Ananda Kumar on 21 June. It was a fun and successful event, garnering a total sale of $2,170 all of which has been donated to the JSM fund. The Club would like to thank all Members who had supported this event.

Amy Bondi made her debut performance in SCC on Friday 13 July and made it a wonderful night. The evening kick-started with Amy’s amazing vocals and a great collection of songs. In the midst the entertainment, Amy also engaged Members in her performances. With the strumming of her guitar in the Main Lounge, Members flooded to the dance floor. At the last segment of her performance, Amy transformed into the legendary Tina Turner and rocked the stage with her strong stage presence which kept the audience in full swing. It was truly a night to remember!

Recent Events SCC CELEBRATES NATIONAL DAY WITH HAWKER FARE
LOVING SINGAPORE, OUR HOME THURSDAY, 9 AUGUST 2012
As Singapore was celebrating its 47th year of independence, SCC was evidently in the celebratory mood as well. Members and guests were welcomed with Singapore flags, clappers and two popular children activities – face painting and balloon sculpturing. Children and parents were hyped up by the excellent creativity portrayed by the face painters and balloon sculptors. Stationed at the Courtyard was SCC’s very own Hawker Fare! Members and guests were able to relive the good old kampong days with an array of delectable hawker dishes. Spectators at the Gilmour and Stumps Terraces enjoyed a panoramic view of a superb aerial flypast performance executed by the National Day Parade’s fighter jet planes. In closing, everyone celebrated this day in high spirits under the magnificent firework displays, creating waves at all corners of the Club.

SCC ACADEMY FAMILY SPORTS DAY SATURDAY 23 JUNE 2012
On a beautiful Saturday morning on 23 June 2012, the SCC Padang welcomed more than 60 youngsters accompanied by their families for a fun-filled day of Cricket, Rugby and Soccer. A big thank you to the General Committee, especially to Chairman, Games Control Board Mr Ananda Kumar for spearheading this event and everyone who supported the SCC Academy Family Sports Day. Credit also goes to Peter Brooks, Robin Wilkins, Owen Monaghan and their fantastic teams of coaches from the respective academies for their involvement and putting this inaugural event together. General Committee Member Mr Steve Thompson presented souvenirs to all participants aged between 6 to 12 years old followed by more face painting and “jumping on the castles�. It was indeed a successful event and an enjoyable day for all!

A superb weekend of football is what comes to mind after another tournament goes by. The SCC brainchild of a sixes tournament is now taking hold and the dedication of the Committee that puts this together is as strong as ever.
The SCC Charity Dinner was a sell out and this was due to the efforts of Richard Pugh, Matt Zatto and Anthony Houlahan who ensured there was standing room only and then managed a Charity Auction event that raised a substantial amount for a designated cause. The evening also saw a Question and Answer session with our special guest Ray Parlour and his take on the football scene in the UK both past and present was great. We were also honoured with our guests from RBSC Bangkok who played an Interport the same evening with SCC Firsts and accepted our dinner invitation.
What is particularly inspiring is the charity aspect to the tournament. It is most pleasing to me, my fellow Committee and SCC Members to see the happiness on the faces of the children from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Singapore first-hand, enjoying themselves on the Padang and being treated like kings for two precious days in their lives by Members of the SCC. That is what makes the SCC Sixes a very special tournament indeed. For the record the youngsters from Bali, Indonesia won the Youth Tournament and we hope to see them back here again to defend their title next year. The main tournament was exciting and several top teams participated from around the region including HKFC and YCAC from Japan. The winners of the Cup were the Young Lions who were just too strong for the other teams and showed how well they are doing in the Malaysia Super League. It was a pleasure to have the Young Lions and we hope to see them back next year. Westin Corporation Jurong FC won the Masters Tournament with a side captained by V Sundramoorthy and several other exSingapore International players. The Legends Tournament was won by JFC, a very strong team of ex-Internationals. The SCC teams all did very well but came up short at the final stages. Well done to all our teams and better luck next year! The efforts of our sponsors should not go unnoticed and we would like to thank C. Melchers GmbH, CLA Lighting and Rulewave among others. CLA had a superb tent with drinks and snacks available to friends of Shooter and Eddie and this was very well-received by all who attended the two days of football. A thank you to Dirk, Shooter and Eddie for their very tremendous support for our Soccer Sixes and we hope to bring

The SCC Soccer Sixes is more than just playing football. It is also what you give back to the community at large and a special mention to SCC Thirds who raised more than $1,000 themselves to assist our efforts. We feel this tournament has the potential to grow further and take roots across Asia and we look forward to many more years of Soccer Sixes on the Padang. My special thanks to Owen Monaghan, Anthony Houlahan, Graham Dickson, Len Beschizza, Richard Pugh, Matt Zatto, Ross Gregory, Dirk Paulsen, Brian Lavelle and all the staff at the SCC for their tireless efforts especially Kairi, Kristen, Wendy, Stefaine, That, Fiona, Angeline, Adeline and all the other backroom staff, as without their special efforts and dedication we would not have a tournament. Tracy Jones assisting in the Eagles Nest was also well appreciated where she shared commentary with Dirk, Len and Brian. I believe Sir John Duffy made his way there too and we loved his humour among other attributes. PADANG SHIELD GAMES 2012 SATURDAY, 14 JULY 2012 HOSTED BY SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB
Games Summary for Padang Shield 2012 Balut – SCC (9,349 – 9,301) Six rounds of Balut were played with the last round being the deciding game for the Cup. At the end of the fifth game, SCC was leading by a mere 9 points. The game could have gone either way but the SCC Baluteers secured their win, opening up the point difference to 48 points. A close finish, but a win for SCC nonetheless. Cricket – Rained-off Darts – SRC (2 – 5) Our darters started out strong winning both the doubles matches. However, SRC pulled back to win all the singles matches as well as the threesome. Golf – Drawn Golf was played at Sentosa Golf Club (Tanjong) on Wednesday 11 July. 20 golfers from each club teed-off, playing in Match Play, 4 ball best ball. This was another close match-up as it was down to the last flight; SCC needed a tie to finally bring the Cup home. Unfortunately, the SRC golfers in the last flight proved too strong. The final score was a very friendly draw, 5 – 5. Having won the Cup in 2012, SRC retained the Golf trophy. Ladies Hockey – SCC (1 – 0) The SCC girls took to the hockey pitch with much enthusiasm. It was a hard fought match with both sides showcasing their skills. SCC scored their winning goal in the second half, finally beating the SRC goalie. While SRC came back hard to try and equalise, our SCC goalie blocked all their shots with finesse.

Men’s Hockey – SRC (2 – 5) Men’s Hockey was another hard fight. With National players on their squad, SRC was a tough team to beat, leading 4-0 at halftime. SCC scored two goals in the second half but the SRC goalie was determined to keep SCC’s score down. Netball – SRC (16 – 52) Netball was played on 11 July at the SCC multi-purpose court. Once again, SRC fielded a team of mostly National players who dominated the game. Rugby – SCC (60 – 12) While the SRC Netball girls dominated the multi-purpose court, the SCC Rugby boys dominated the field. Well-known for their 56 – 0 score at the last Padang Shield in 2010, our boys retained the Rugby shield easily once again. Snooker – SRC (0 – 7) Tensions were high in the Men’s Bar where snooker was played. With SRC fielding world-ranked player Peter Gilchrist, SCC tried their best to hold their own. Soccer – SCC (5 – 1) The SCC Thirds did us proud on the Soccer pitch as well. They dominated the game throughout, conceding only one goal to SRC. Tennis – Rained-off OVERALL WINNER – Drawn • • • •

Article & Photos by Steve Blaxhall An exciting weekend of cricket, at a festive and fun Padang, was capped by some scintillating displays, culminating with Cricket Club of India (CCI) running out as winners of the 2012 SCC UFL Twenty20 tournament. Held between August 24-26, nine teams, two each from Singapore, Hong Kong, India and one from Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa battled it out to decide the Bowl, Plate and Cup winners. A sparkling 44 from Sujit Nayak helped CCI post 121-8, a score which proved too much for Madras Cricket Club (Madras) in the Cup Final. Madras batsmen J Hariesh led the response, with 32, but a superb bowling display from the CCI boys restricted Madras to 100-7. All six bowlers picked up a wicket, which was enough to see the boys from Mumbai take the Cup at their first attempt. In the Plate final the lads from Rowlin National Cricket Academy (Rowlin) defended a total of 104, overcoming Singapore Cricket Association (SCA). In a rain restricted, 16 over, match opener Matthew Wright top scored, with 42, for Rowlin. In response the SCA were restricted to 87-9, as a burst of 5-13 from fast bowler Aubrey Swanepoel took the game away. In a thrilling climax to the Bowl, and a first for the Club’s Twenty 20 competition, Melbourne Cricket Club (Melbourne) defeated Singhalese Sports Club (Singhalese) in a bowl off. Melbourne’s William Ryan, held his nerve, was the only player to hit the stumps, with the very last ball. Earlier Melbourne scored 137-8, while Singhalese, who lost early wickets and seemed out of the game with five overs to go, managed to score the game-tying run of the penultimate ball 32

of the last over, but a wicket on the last meant a bowl off was required to decide the victory. Led well by Captain Rob Hands the SCC lads acquitted themselves well, winning two games, including a fine victory against finalists Madras in failing light on Saturday evening. Pete Muruthi saw the boys home with a six to win the game. Andrew Goldsmith also shone for the team with the bat, scoring consistently all weekend, and taking out the most sixes of the tournament award, while Riaz Hussain bowled superbly to end up with 10 wickets for the tournament. A partnership with Howzat Youth Cricket also saw Kwik cricket, under 11’s, on the Padang for the first time. Howzat also were good enough to sponsor cricketing legends Farokh Engineer and Darren Gough at the tournament, including a superb dinner for 400 plus people on the Padang on Saturday evening. A huge thanks to all that helped out at the Club, particularly the ground staff, Sports Department, Marcoms and F&B services. Of course, we couldn’t do it without our sponsors and we hope to see them next year, particularly our title sponsor this year UFL, who have for the past three T20’s added the color, the fashion and vibrancy which is todays modern twenty/20 Cricket. Without their wholehearted support, this would have been only a tournament, and not the best international club tournament in the world, as voted by all the participating teams - Can’t wait!

We have had a tremendous response from the Members to attend the 32nd Interport, to be held at the Kota Kinabalu Yacht Club in November. To date 24 Members have signed up to tour, with more waiting in the wings to join once their business commitments are fully known. For once the Section won their element of the Padang Shield held on Saturday 14 July. SCC scored 9,347 points against SRC’s 9,301. After two rounds of the local league SCC’s Team 1 are already in the lead, however there are still three more rounds to go. We are ever hopeful of winning once again after taking the title in 2010. We accepted an invitation to play in a triangular tournament against NUSS, IA and SCC on Wednesday 25 July at NUSS. We had absolutely no trouble in commandeering third place. Scores, IA – 6,929, NUSS – 6,808 and SCC – 6,703. As this will now be an annual event we shall try to improve next year. The Pot Games against the Tanglin Club is scheduled for Saturday 29 September 2012 where we will endeavour to help bring the Cup home. At the season’s third league match on 15 August, SCC’s Team 1 obtained second place, just losing out to NUSS Team 2 by a mere two points (NUSS Team 2 – 2355, SCC Team 1 – 2353). We just retain the overall lead by 74 points, with two games to go. The Balut Section would like to congratulate the Bridge fraternity in forming a new Section. Now there are 13 Sections in SCC for the Chairman Games Control Board to worry about. In fact the writer has often wondered why there are not more indoor games available for those rainy days, such as a Chess set, Backgammon and several packs of cards placed in the Men’s Bar. We would also like to say thank you to the GM Alan Jones who has sadly tendered his resignation after five years of loyal serve to the Club. The baluteers thank Alan for his patience, guidance and advice during his tenure and we all wish him well in the future. 34

The Billiard & Snooker Section Committee introduced the “First Bash” for the Billiards & Snooker Section on 2 July 2012. Included in the evening was novel tournament organised and introduced by our Captain – Mathew Lim. Great participation and fantastic bonding was achieved during the evening. We had 60 Section Members enjoying good fellowship and eight pairs playing the game. Winners of the mini tournaments were awarded the Section polo shirts. We celebrated the great evening with a barbeque lamb and other great dishes with the usual beverage of our choice for the evening.
The Committee are now working furiously to get activities for the rest of the year. More activities will be reported when we have firm dates.

Our visitors however comprised of 10 charming lady bowlers from the Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) and two equally affable gentlemen. They engaged the SCC bowlers in a friendly match comprising 12 teams of mixed triples with three bowls for 15 ends. The winning team was led by Amira (skip), Louis Cook (KCC) and Menon followed by Shermeen (skip), Ron and Lily Chan (KCC). Everyone gathered thereafter for a splendid repast graced by SCC President Col (Retd) Guru who gave away the prizes and a plaque to KCC’s Team Manager, Maggie Lam. SCC’s General Committee Members Joyce, Cynthia and Ravi were also present. KCC has extended an open invitation to SCC for a friendly game in Hong Kong in 2013.

Sports News SCC’s first Bridge Section Committee
Article by Rachna Anand | Convenor: Howard Haythornwaite The Singapore Cricket Club has long been admired for being a premier club, its heritage clubhouse, excellent ambience, food, sports facilities and enviable location. The one thing though that was a miss was perhaps the card games that have long been associated with club culture around the world. At long last, the SCC has come of age with a milestone much awaited and needed to be at par with the other well-respected clubs in Singapore. The Games Control Board has done what hadn’t ever been done before in the 160-year history of our Club – they finally gave us a Bridge Section! Although Bridge was introduced last year as a social event with monthly games, it was finally launched as a formal section on 25 July this year where the first SCC Bridge Section AGM was held and the Section Members nominated the new Committee for 2012.

for the beginners, as long as you have a desire to learn and play and abide by the decorum of the game, come join us. For the uninitiated, Contract Bridge is a trick taking partnership game played by four players to win the game by using skill, logic, memory and concentration. It is an excellent mind sport for all ages with its own Olympiad. Bridge can be a super stress buster while giving a rigorous workout to the brain and keeping it in good shape. Dare I say for some of us it may just be the game the doctor ordered. Having said that it would only be fair to be reminded that the game of bridge is not as easy to master as some of the other card games and may not be for those who are seeking instant gratification, as it takes time learn and master. It is definitely for those of you who are adventurous and don’t mind the challenges of the game. As Australian Grand Master, Ron Klinger puts it, “Every time you play, you use – and improve – your skills in communication, logic, math, memory visualisation and psychology”. It is no surprise that some of the leading personalities of the world including Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Bill Clinton are ardent players of the game. The new Section gives us an opportunity to play in the spirit of the game and sportsmanship while respecting the dignity of the Members in person and our Club at large. Happy Bridging!

Article by Nick Dorney | Convenor: Ash Raivadera Despite being in full swing preparations for our exciting SCC International T20 Tournament taking place from 24 to 26 August, the Cricket Section has certainly been flat-chat elsewhere in recent months too with quite literally a plethora, perhaps record number, of fixtures taking place at home and abroad. As part of our clubs 160th year celebrations, a large focus has been on organising as many of our neighbouring reciprocal clubs to visit for a series of historical Inteport fixtures. Since the last edition of The Padang, we have now completed the final three of our five Interport fixtures for 2012, hosting Penang Sports Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club and the Royal Selangor Club. All of the Interport games were played in very competitive and sporting spirits, with highly memorable and well-attended Interport dinners on the Saturday evening in the Gilmour Room which is also a big highlight of each such weekend. A big well done to Tracy Jones and Ash Raivadera for their terrific organisation of these events. Out of the Interport games themselves, the fixture versus HKCC was arguably our Club’s best Interport game of the year, where our SCC X1 demolished a quite fancied HKCC X1’s total of 170 through some extremely aggressive opening batting – Andrew Goldsmith (48 from 22 balls) and Nick Dorney (70 from 35 balls) hitting 10 sixes between them in an opening stand of just under 100. Our Cricket Section had its first ever tour to China, playing in the Beijing 6s, at the end of June. Whilst certainly not renowned as a cricket “Mecca”, there were some strong teams present for this event, with SCC’s most notable performance being their demolition of the China National Team (buying them all quite a few tequilas the night before may well have helped!). the Oval Room and on 19 July they hosted us at Par Lounge at the Orchid Country Club. The darts team from OCC known as Orchid Bulls, plays in the top darts league in the National Darts League. It is hoped that with such regular matches our level of darts will improve and we will be able to win the various trophy matches that are forthcoming. Article by Balbir Singh Sidhu | Convenor: Balbir Singh Sidhu Padang Shield On 14 July in the Oval Room, we hosted the dart match against Singapore Recreation Club as part of the biennial Padang Shield. As usual SRC were the favourites as they have a number of the best darters in Singapore on their team. We prepared ourselves for this match with a friendly match against a team from the top league in Singapore and a number of training sessions in the Men’s Bar. We adopted the new SDA format for matches – 1,801 threesome, two doubles and four singles – all played on the best of three legs basis. It was good that we had a number of new players in our team this year and this made the opponent slightly inquisitive. The training preparations were valuable as after the threesome and two doubles, we were leading 2-1. Our doubles pairing of Neil Taylor with Ravendra Krishnan and Paul Foster with Oliver Andersen won both their matches. This was a new twist in the proceedings. Promptly SRC raised their game in the final four matches and won all the four singles despite a superb effort from our darters who were within sight of winning – we were going for the double finish too. The match ended 5-2 in SRC favour but it was good to see our best darts performance in the Padang Shield too. Much thanks to the supporters who came to support the team too. It was a great afternoon of competitive darts, fantastic fellowship among the darters from the two clubs with good food and drinks. We played a number of threesome, doubles and singles matches on each occasion. With OCC being a top team, the outcome was expected but it was gratifying seeing our darters improving and able to win some games against top players. Darts matches are also very much a social occasion and it is wonderful to have made many new friends with the players from the Orchid Bulls. This warm fellowship is what make this occasions special. We thank OCC for their warm hospitality during our visit there and look forward to many years of darts action and fellowship with them. Much thanks to Mike Daryanani for arranging this matches. Darts Action in the Men’s Bar There was an extensive amount of darts action in the Men’s Bar in July. This was partly because the players who usually represent us in the various tournaments were having practice matches. This is very much with the aim of winning the various trophy matches – especially the Triangular Tournament in October. With the inhouse competitions starting soon, we hope the darters will be in fine form by the match date. The number of ladies in the Section has also increased. They have come together to organise matches among themselves in the Men’s Bar. Much thanks to Fathima for leading this effort. Please do come and play some darts in the Men’s Bar whenever you are in the Club. It is a great way to spend some time with your kakis. Drinks are allowed too, so how not to have a good time, huh? INTERPORT MATCH AGAINST KLUANG COUNTRY CLUB 2012/KL GOLF TOUR Article by Lim Khoon | Convenor: Lim Khoon A good turnout of 22 golfers signed up for our annual golf tour up to Kuala Lumpur cum Interport match with Kluang Country Club (KCC) on 28 July 2012.

There is no doubt that the good turnout can be attributed to the two quality golf courses that were lined up for play in the KL part of the trip, namely Kota Permai Golf Course (KPGC) and Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC). Given last year travails (the coach driver oversleeping and arriving late at the Club for the 6.45am pick up and then compounding matters by forgetting to bring his passport), this year’s departure was a total breeze in comparison and we managed to set-off at the scheduled time of 7.00am with none a hitch. We arrived at KPGC in good time for lunch and found the course in great condition, especially the greens. It was a real pleasure to be able to putt on fast and true greens. The next day saw the group teeing off at KLGCC. There is no doubt that KLGCC must be one of the best courses now in this part of the woods. The course was in immaculate condition and one of the things that will strike most players is the fantastic views from many of the elevated tees. Again, the greens were fast and true and we were indeed fortunate to be able to play on two great courses this trip. The third morning, we departed KL for the trip down to Kluang. Whilst everyone was certainly looking forward to meeting our buddies in Kluang Country Club (KCC) and to their wonderful hospitality, after two rounds games of golf under the hot weather in KL, the same could not be said about looking forward to the golf match.

For those not in the know, the golf course in Kluang is really the ultimate commando course that entails walking up and down a very hilly terrain twice over. Yes,

it is a nine-hole course, just like our Changi Golf Club here in Singapore, but it would be no exaggeration to say that the walk is twice as difficult, not to mention the golf. It is like Changi on steroids and certainly not recommended to play as the third game of a three-day golfing trip! Nevertheless, being Members of the premier sports club in Singapore, all our 18 competitive players gamely stepped up to the first tee to face the might of KCC on their home course. Unfortunately, being game was what we were to the KCC players and the lesser said about the result the better; all that need be said is that we did not win. The good thing about playing a tough walking course is that the drinking and makan that follow tastes doubly good. The hospitality of our Kluang buddies was as ever second to none and year on year, it gets better, which is really fantastic. The Golf Section would thus like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the members and friends of KCC for making our trip a most memorable one. July – what a hectic month! BRADFIELD COLLEGE First it was the Bradfield College Tour Match. Bradfield have been regular visitors to the Club and this was the fifth time they played on the Padang. However they have always been excellent visitors and played out a very entertaining but sporting 2-2 draw. Stars of the game were Subash Nathan who marked his SCC debut with both our goals and Jamie Chambers who was voted the SCC “Man of the Match” by the visitors. PADANG SHIELD Next up was the Padang Shield matches. Now reduced to a biennial event, both matches were played on the SCC Padang which held up very well despite the heavy downpour in the morning and early afternoon. The Men went first and were unfortunate in the early parts on the game to concede a couple of soft goals. SRC took advantage of this to dominate the game and sped away to a 4-0 lead. SCC played much better in the second half and managed to pull the score back to 2-4 – Ting Hao getting both goals. For a while it seemed like there was a chance for a third and fourth goal as SCC forced several circle penetrations and penalty corners. However SRC capitalised with a lucky counter attack and forced a fifth goal to finally win 5-2. The ladies game also proved to be very competitive. SRC obviously smarting from a 5-0 defeat in the league were very keen to made amends. Both teams had chances in the first half but failed to score. In the second half SCC took control and Supranee in goal hardly saw the ball. A total of eleven penalty corners were forced without success. Several field goal attempts also went agonisingly wide. Finally with about five minutes left on the clock off a penalty corner and clever circle possession between Cath, Petra, Geer and Laura T, the ball was forced over the line (no one can recall exactly who scored!). SCC won 1-0.

SOARING HIGH INTO A SHORT SUMMER BREAK Article by Rachael Bell | Convenor: Amber Williams Wednesday 11 July held host to one of the most fiercely contested netball showdowns in the SCC Netball calendar – The Padang Shield: SCC vs. SRC. With the SRC having won the last Padang Shield, our A-Team of players were out to prove a point. With an army of supporters, a motivational speech from our coach and a lot of cheering, our girls commenced battle. There was some spectacular play from each team, both sides showing real determination and desire to win the coveted trophy for their club. Extra credit has to go to the SRC team whose defensive play and ability to intercept the ball was outstanding – surely one of the benefits of having such young and incredibly bouncy players. Our girls put up a great battle and although the score line didn’t reflect the result we wanted they should all be congratulated for giving it 110% on the night. Good work SCC! On a more positive note, Netball Singapore’s Annual Energiser League ended at the beginning of July, which had four SCC teams

It was a good tournament for the Hawks, Eagles and Falcons but a huge congratulations to the Ospreys (3rd team) who overcame a number of injuries, having to play on Friday nights and school summer holidays to finish in second place in their division. Great result for the team so a big high five to Anna, Penny, Amy, Andrea, Katy, Sophie, Roxie, Elaine, Gemma, Asha, Adj, Joanna. Off the court, with a short four-week summer break planned, some of the netballers looked to other methods of training available to us at the Club and decided upon a game of bowls. Despite the 34 degree mid-day heat and coaching from the side lines by the Cricket Section, we had great fun learning a new sport. Although I doubt that given our performance, the Bowls Section will be looking to sign any of us up for competitive matches, they certainly showed us how it was done later than afternoon as we watched their tournament from a more comfortable surrounding of Stumps Terrace – a perfect end to a great afternoon. With our four-week summer break nearing to an end, we are all raring to get back onto the netball court, ready for our next league, a wave of friendly matches and a few more social events. SCC WINS the National 7’s Series – A great start to a Big Season Article by Matt Head | Convenor: Terence Noe For consecutive weekends in July , 25 hearty SCC souls competed in the Singapore National 7s Series. Round 1 started at YCK Stadium in atrocious conditions with the SCC fielding two teams on either side of the draw. Results were mixed with the unfancied SCC Black led by John Judges and Kev Gibbons going through pool play unbeaten to move into Day 2 ranked top of their pool. After drowning in the rain on Day 1 the quarter finals were moved to the astro turf of St Andrews Junior College. With both teams a little short on reserves, a hobbling Chris Harkins took to the field for SCC Black somehow running in three tries for an easy win in their quarter final beating Police B 43-5 while SCC Gold made hard work of their quarter final beating Blacks 15-10. Sadly the two SCC teams met each other in the semi-final. In a physical game the Golds ran out 31-5 winners with some good tries from Bryan Ng and Franck Schaller being the highlights of this game. SCC Black then took on the younger, fitter, faster lads from St Andrews in the third/fourth play-off. Coaches JJ and Gibbo came up with a barnstorming game plan. Javin Singh’s incursions up the middle and JJ’s darts around the fringes ensured the SCC Blacks got off to a healthy lead. The final nail in the coffin came by way of a seven-man, 60-meter driving maul. To the protestations of the St Andrews players screaming “Play 7s”, SCC moved their way down the field before Judges dived over in the corner to win 27-7. SCC Gold then took on Wanderers in the final. SCC dominated possession, played all the rugby but lacked patience on the break, 44

sadly turning over possession allowing Wanderers to score two tries to win the game 10-0. A strong effort from the Gold team, knowing they had lost the game rather than Wanderers winning it – this would provide valuable confidence and motivation for Round 2. Round 2 was held the following weekend at CCAB. Injuries and withdrawals meant a slightly different look to the teams – Mike “This is not touch” Lin, Declan “Double Duty” Martens, Raj Sanjaran, Sam “Serevi” Sharp and Greedy Ken Loughnan – were all welcome additions to the teams. Unfortunately the way the ranking system worked, both SCC teams were to play each other in their first game of the day, Gold running out the winners 36-5. SCC Gold and Black then moved through the rest of pool play both having good wins over Bucks and Police B – the only loss coming against Police A. This meant the SCC teams met again in the quarter-finals, SCC Gold finally running out 36-12 winners to book a semi-final against their conquerors the previous week, Wanderers. Gold showed a lot more patience in this game and with bone-crushing defence from Simon Etheredge and great attack from Ross Morris who played well all weekend, Wanderers were never in the game – SCC Gold cruised into the final 12-0. Before the final, SCC Black had a playoff game against Police B. Blacks showed tremendous spirit as they had done all weekend, running out 31-0 winners to finish ranked fifth in the series ahead of first teams from both Bucks and Bedok. SCC Gold met the Fijian-laden Police A in the final. Gold got off to a great start with the tournaments leading try scorer Franck “Rolling Pin” Schaller catching the kick off and running 60 metres to have the SCC up 7-0 after 10 seconds. This set the tone for the match – precision attacking led by Valu Raturibi and Ross Morris and ruthless defence directed by Suhaimi Amran. The SCC went into the break with a 14-0 lead. Expert use of the bench saw the deserved rest for the likes of Matt Head and the introduction of the fresh legs of Kevin Loo, Alex Chew, Greedy Ken, Derek Chan and Dave Teo to take the game up another notch. Gold won the final 24-7 to cap off two consistent weekends to win the whole series and take home the silverware. Thanks to all the guys for their hard work and the SRU for organising a great tournament. May this be the start of a successful SCC Rugby season!
SOCCER SIXES The Section hosted a very successful Soccer Sixes at the Padang recently and was honoured with the presence of Ray Parlour exArsenal and England player who both played and provided a very informative Q&A session at the Charity Dinner. P J Roberts did a wonderful job as our emcee for the evening and all in attendance had a great night. The tournament itself was very good and the Singapore Young Lions won the main event after a tough two days with Weston Corporation Jurong FC (with V Sundramoorthy) winning the Masters tournament. A very big thank you to the SCC Sixes Organising Committee (Ravi, Owen and Anthony) and for all the support from the Club officials and staff who had put in a stellar performance to make the two days a great success. Thanks also to all the Section Members who hosted the children for the weekend as part of the tournament’s charity angle. The kids had a wonderful two days and can play quite a bit as you would have seen from the tournament finals. Well done to the boys from Bali who managed to win the youth tournament. A big thank you to Richard Pugh for his efforts along with Matt Zatto and Ross Gregory in organising the SCC Sixes dinner and the charity auction which was very well done. Special thanks to Dirk Paulsen, Tracy Jones and Brian Lavelle for their support in the Eagles Nest and for the Field Marshalls who did a superb job. Shooter and Eddies tent was brilliant and thanks for all their support for this tournament especially in bringing out Ray Parlour. We are working on getting Harry Redknapp to Singapore soon and that promises to be a great future event at the SCC. INTERPORT The Section hosted the Royal Bangkok Sports Club to a First Team Interport and regained the Morris Trophy with a 6-1 victory. Well done to the SCC Firsts for another piece of silverware in the cabinet. We hosted the RBSC to a dinner after the match and had a wonderful evening and we would like to thank all our friends at RBSC for coming down to play SCC in both the Interport and participate at the SCC Sixes. We look forward to going to Bangkok next year for the RBSC Sevens. SOCCER FIESTA Another great week for the SCC and we need a bigger trophy cabinet. The Thirds won the Tiger Cup 2-0 against RHT Law Taylor Wessing, the Pads won the Breitling Cup beating the FAS Coaches 2-0 and Lions won the Hindu New Year Cup beating the Indian Association 5-0 to complete a clean sweep of trophies for the SCC. The Dirk Paulsen Trophy match between SCC Firsts and the Cosmo Select on the Padang was not played as the Cosmo Select could not field a side and the trophy is retained by the SCC for another year. PADANG SHIELD SCC 6 SRC 1 always has a nice ring to it and so it proved on 14 July as we thrashed our friends from across the Padang. Steve Rogers and A J Cyrile were too hot to handle on the day and a good win for Michael Drake’s team which was very well managed by Alex Khan. We really wanted this one and the team we put out was a credit to the SCC.

SECTION MIDWEEK TEAMS The Padang season is in full swing and the playing surface is probably the best it has ever been in over a decade. A fantastic effort from the groundsmen and compared to the adjacent field at SRC you can see the quality of their work. Pads, Lions and Thirds are playing regularly and there are rumours of a Pads tour to Perth and a possible Strollers tour to Jakarta. Stay tuned. SCC Representative teams participated at the opening of the new League Pitches at Turf City recently and would like to thank the Cosmo League for the invitation. HENRIK LORENZ MEMORIAL MATCH The SCC Lions beat a spirited German All Stars team 5-3 in an exciting game at the Padang recently to retain their trophy. Well done to Terk and the SCC Lions and keep this important match on our list of fixtures every year. SCC STROLLERS SCC Strollers drew 4-4 with Vipers FC in the EFL Cup Final held on the Padang on 4 August. Unfortunately we lost the penalty shoot out by a score of 9-8 in dramatic fashion but the large crowd in attendance were kept in suspense until the very last moment. A superb effort from the Strollers against very young opposition of which many are NFL Players. Article by Manmindar Singh | Convenor: Manmindar Singh National Squash League 2012 We fielded 15 teams in this year’s National Squash League – the most number of teams we have ever fielded in the league. We had teams in all the Men’s grades as well as in Veterans and Ladies. Our performance was not quite what we were hoping for. In A grade, we fielded three teams to ensure that all our top players had a good run out rather than sitting on the bench. However, a combination of injuries and unavailability of some key players meant that we surrendered our A grade title by one point to Tanglin Club with our first and second teams coming in second and third in the league respectively. However, we did redeem ourselves with our first team winning the Challenge Cup competition among the top four teams. We beat UCSC in the final. In the B grade, the first team were runaway leaders with the second team coming in a credible third. Whilst the plan was for the first team to win the league, the performance of the second team was icing on the cake! Our first team however lost in the finals of the Challenge Cup to UCSC. We were unlucky in the D grade. Our team of juniors was expected to win the league and were on course until the last match. Needing only a win against a weaker side to secure the title, we lost to finish third as two of our top players were away for a junior competition in Malaysia. However, they made up for their disappointment over the league title by stomping home to win the Challenge Cup. Unfortunately the rest of our teams did not make a mark in the league. Our two ladies teams in Division 1 and 2 were expected to do well but eventually we only managed a third placing in the Ladies Div 2.
Hong Kong 3s International 2012 - SCC team
In A grade, Bryan Koh reached the finals, winning a nail-biting five-set thriller against his brother, Nigel, in the quarters before upsetting first seed and Club mate Vivian Rhamanan in four sets in the semis. Despite a gallant fight back helped by some great shot making from a set down in the finals, Bryan eventually succumbed to the superior movement of Samuel Kang, the third seed. In B grade, our players contested third place with Bryden Yong overcoming his “older” but recently rejuvenated Club mate Chew Kok Wye. Likewise, Rayden Tan notched a credible third placing in C grade. We did win one of the Men’s grades when Liang Jun Yuan lived up to his top billing by winning the D grade title. Another win came courtesy of Annabelle Lim in the Ladies’ novice event. Congratulations to all our winners! Tour to Hong Kong 1-3 June 2012 16 players participated in the 7th Annual MECO Squash 3’s tournament hosted by HK Football Club. We competed against teams from HK, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore. Competition was very tough this year. The Men’s Perrier HK team had two players world-ranked 34 and 61 whilst the Ladies Perrier HK team had two players ranked 18 and 70.
Decent performance overall but we are capable of much better. Looking forward to next year’s league to make our depth of players count in the league.
Predictably our results were not as good as last year when our Ladies team won their division though we still had many good games. Our first team lost in the quarters of the Men’s Open to eventual winners Perrier HK while our third team was runnerup in the Plate. The Ladies were third in the Ladies Open while the best result came courtesy of our Masters team which won the Plate.
Singapore Individual Graded Squash Tournament 2012 We had about 25 entries in this event. All the Men’s grades were contested but a poor turnout meant that only the Ladies’ novice event was held.
We were treated to some world class squash as the organisers arranged for Top 20 world-ranked players Thierry Lincou, Ali Walker and Hisham Ashour to play exhibition matches over the weekend. Thanks to everyone who came on the tour – your enthusiasm, your squash and your sense of fun was magic!

(Retd) Gurcharan Singh together with Chairman Games Control Board Ananda Kumar and GC Members Joyce Foster, Cynthia Robless, Ravi Chandran and Sher Baljit Singh also graced our occasion. Following the election of a new Section Committee, a delightful 4-course dinner was served. One topic which generated considerable discussion was the one on current tennis dress code. As expected, there were Members who put up sound reasons for change as well as maintaining the status quo. After much deliberation, the floor voted for a subcommittee to look into the matter. Members are encouraged to write in to express their views. The current Bye-Law states: The required dress for Tennis shall confirm to reasonable standards of propriety and cleanliness. Such dress shall be basically white or pastel coloured, although colour trimmings will be permitted. Shoes must be white with or without coloured trimmings, without heels and without any form of nails, spikes or studs. Announcing the NEW tennis academy The Club and Section are pleased to announce that the Tennis Academy has been formally approved by the GC. Commencing formally in September, the two new courts marked on the multipurpose courts will be used for tennis coaching throughout the week, weekends included. Weekends will be a highlight for the juniors as special academies for all grades and ages will be catered for. Coaching Developments Pte Ltd has been awarded the contract and dedicated professional coaches will be available on a full-time basis. Full timings and schedules will be given in due course. In the meantime, if you have any further queries, please contact the Men’s Captain, Matthew Dabbs. We are delighted to have another academy at the Club! Runners-Up in Martha Young Cup The annual inter-club knockout doubles tournament was held in June at Kallang Tennis Centre. SCC fielded a Ladies A, Men’s A, B and C teams – by far one of the largest team entry for the Club in recent years. The matches were very competitive and pushed the players to the max. Eventually, it was the ladies team who progressed the furthest, entering into the final round of the Martha Young Cup against SICC, after triumphing over clubs like Singapore Swimming Club and Singapore Recreation Club. It was a nail-biting finish with us drawing at 1-1 with SICC, leaving it to the final match to decide the winner. Unfortunately the going was not only tough but steaming hot, and the SCC ladies lost the decider by a few points. Nevertheless, we were happy that we had come this far and we hope for better luck in the next season.

With a bit of luck, steady hands and keen eyes, we emerged as champions. Thanks to Matt, our Men’s Captain, for putting in the effort to form a team which not only took part, but eventually triumphed against nine other teams. Looks like we have Members in our Section who have other skills beside tennis! Wimbledon Finals screening The Men’s and Ladies Final were eagerly watched by Members when they were shown live at Stumps. This was the first tennis social organised by the new committee and the response was very encouraging. The munching and drinking were as enjoyable as the games that were played between Roger Federer and Andy Murray throughout the night. It was attended by the youthful juniors and the young-at-heart who exchanged notes about how tennis has evolved over the years. Just as the rain interrupted play in the Federer-Murray final, the weather got the better of us in the recent Padang Shield. However, having won the previous tie, SCC managed to retain the Cup this year. 5th SCC Annual Sports Awards Congratulations to Gilbert Ng for winning the Spirit of the Sport award and the Ladies A team for being finalists in the Team of the Year awards! Upcoming events at the club The Tennis Section is organising some exciting tennis activities in the coming months. There are plans to host friendlies with other local clubs, tours to Penang, Bangkok, Perth and a range of other activities to keep you on your toes.
