VENTURA LAMBRATE 2014: WHAT’S NEW Ventura Lambrate celebrates its five-year anniversary with great exhibitions by Jaime Hayon, Lidewij Edelkoort, Concern, Lago, Design Academy Eindhoven, IN Residence – Design Dialogues, Lensvelt Contract together with OMA architects, University of the Arts London, Vij5, GVM with Robot City, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Anahuac University Design School Mexico, Zuiderzee Museum and Textielmuseum, Mindcraft, CHP...?, New Window x Lex Pott and more than 130 others.

The Ventura Lambrate design district has added new venues this year, including the Ventura Living Room at Via Ventura 14. This impressive industrial hall will showcase creativeness in all its facets, with the pop-up restaurant of Amaro Creative Industries and partners Lago, Mosa and Lovethesign and work by cutting-edge brands and talented young designers.

Here’s a preview of what’s happening at Ventura Lambrate 2014: VENTURA TEAM UP & VENTURA HIVE Design is undergoing a period of transformation, shifting to a more interdisciplinary approach. Interpersonal relations conducted through design have cultural, social, political and economic implications. In Ventura Team Up this trend becomes visible: designers team up with each other and with people in different fields to realise the next step in their practice.

The new platform Ventura Hive presents up-and-coming talents like Hunch, Liberte Design Studio, Micromacro | Sara Bernardi, Koskela and Studio Bycolor + Kanaguya. The name “hive” hints at the idea of creatives being hard-working bees, each in his or her own hive. Ventura Hive gives talented designers the opportunity to express themselves in a group exhibition for maximum exposure. Ventura Hive is produced in partnership with Officine Tamborrino.

Ventura Lambrate is making selections from among hundreds of applicants who have applied to take part in Ventura Lambrate 2014. The association has already chosen several top players from the design world: Danish Crafts, The Other Hemisphere, Another Perspective 2 and the Design Academy Eindhoven. The final call for entries isopen until 5 February 2014. A final opportunity to apply to be part of Ventura Lambrate, widely considered one of the most cutting-edge and progressive design districts at Milan Design Week (8–13 April 2014).

A Semana de Design de Milão, que acontece neste ano de 8 a 13 de abril, é um dos mais importantes evento de design do mundo. Por mais de 50 anos, o Salão Internacional do Móvel de Milão - I Saloni, juntamente com os outros eventos associados, chamados Fuorisalone, transformam a cidade num centro internacional de design.

Ventura Lambrate District (Foto: Nicole Marnati) Em sua 5a. edição, o circuito de design Ventura Lambrate trará grandes exposições como do designer espanhol Jaime Hayon, responsável pelo projeto de renovação do Centro de Informações do Museu Groninger, na Holanda.

Um dos circuitos que integram o “Fuorisalone” (eventos fora do pavilhão de exposição da feira), é o Ventura Lambrate District, que acontece em das ruas de “Lambrate”, uma área de transição entre a área urbana e a industrial, no nordeste de Milão.

Fast Approaching Event Makes its Mark Designers, journalists, curators, representatives, students and enthusiasts are all gearing up for the industry’s biggest event. From 8 to 13 April, Ventura Lambrate will once again factor in as one of Milan Design Week’s top events: a fully curated district not to be missed. With hundreds of emerging talents, established designers, world-renowned schools, intuitions and labels mounting a whopping 76 exhibitions, the city’s Northeastern quarter is sure to be a bustling heaven of creativity. But the programme won’t stop there: Ventura X is a new initiative expanding into Milan’s city centre to host a special Maarten Baas exhibition – a coproduction with 5VIE district.

In its 5th year, Ventura Lambrate will cover a massive 13,000 M2 of exhibition space – across 19 varied and authentic locales. The tenured visitor will recognise a few venues but also discover new locations. At the centre of it all, Ventura Living Room – Via Ventura 14 – will take over a former snow shovel factory. Celebrating its industrial heritage, this information hub with be joined by the Ventura Hive exhibition. Twice as large as last year, this beehive-encapsulated group show will also take over a former printing workshop – Via Dei Canzi 19.

Nella settimana dall’8 al 13 aprile 2014, l’area industriale di Milano nord-est si trasforma in Ventura Lam brate, un v iv ace distretto creativ o realizzato in concomitanza con il Fuori Salone e av ente come obiettiv o quello di presentare nuov e idee, talenti internazionali, installazioni e mostre legate al mondo del design.

Giunta alla sua quinta edizione, Ventura Lam brate ospita un centinaio di espositori in un’area di circa 13.000 m 2, con un passaggio prev isto di circa 80.000 v isitatori.

Giacomo Rossi, architetto Lighting Designer, fondatore di Luxemozione.com e titolare dello studio di progettazione Rossi Lighting . Dal 1 999 al 2009 ha collaborato con lo studio Ferrara Palladino di Milano in qualità di responsabile della progettazione. In a breathtaking industrial hall, the borders between lifestyle, design, sociality, labour and creativity will fade into each other and become concrete thanks to the presence of established brands plus a selection of young talented designers.

April is traditionally considered a moody month, one when showers and sunshine alternate faster than you can open or close your brolly. Not that you can trust the weathermen this year. Ever since we started using expressions like “climate change” and “two degrees max” as part of a global vocabulary, February is suddenly like April used to be – and from now on it’s gonna be summery and warm. Yet we shouldn’t forget that April is the only month to start with tricks. Who knows, perhaps it embodies like no other month the contradictions of days such as these, sunny bright one moment, somber the next, spring-like but frosty, soft and wild. Well, April is capricious. And it is thus only fitting that Milan Salone del Mobile always take place in April.

Ventura Team Up & Ventura Hive: Il design sta attraversando un periodo di trasformazione, diventando sempre più interdisciplinare e interpersonale. Da questo presupposto nasce Ventura Team Up, un’occasione-evento che consente ai designer di collaborare tra di loro (ma anche con professionisti esterni) per realizzare il prossimo step del loro progetto.

Ventura Hive è invece una piattaforma per i talenti emergenti: uno spazio collettivo che offre ai designer la possibilità di esprimere la propria creatività all’interno di una mostra collettiva, per avere ancora più forza e visibilità.

Ventura Hive è realizzato in partnership con Officine Tamborrino.

Ventura X Maarten Baas: Progetto speciale di quest’anno è Ventura X Maarten Baas, BAAS IS IN TOWN coprodotto da 5VIE in collaborazione con Ventura Projects. Ventura Lambrate porta l’atmosfera del quartiere in centro città (via Fosse Ardeatine, nei pressi di via Torino) con una personale dedicata al celebre designer olandese e al suo modo creativo, sperimentale e critico di lavorare.

Con il quartiere di Lambrate si chiude il nostro tour nella Milano del design: in via Ventura infatti fervono i preparativi per il Fuorisalone 2014, con designer in arrivo da ogni angolo del mondo. di Redazione web | 01 aprile 2014

Dopo le incursioni nel distretto di Brera e nell’area di via Tortona, chiudiamo il nostro viaggio nella geografia del design milanese con il quartiere di Lambrate, una delle realtà più vivaci, giovani e interessanti per chi cerca tutte le ultime tendenze in fatto di arredo e complementi. La vocazione di Lambrate per il design è antica (l’area infatti pullula di gallerie d’arte, aree espositive, officine artigianali), ma il legame con il Salone del Mobile e soprattutto con gli eventi del Fuorisalone è molto recente. È dal 2010 infatti che via Ventura ha iniziato a ritagliarsi un ruolo di primo piano durante le giornate del Fuorisalone, divenendo in questi pochi anni un evento-chiave di tutta la Design Week di Milano, grazie soprattutto a quell’atmosfera inedita, sperimentale e fortemente internazionale che si discosta dall’atteggiamento più mainstream degli altri quartieri del design.

Nelle aree toccate dagli eventi di Ventura Lambrate, infatti, i visitatori potranno scoprire quelli che sono oggi i risultati più sorprendenti del design contemporaneo, in un viaggio attraverso diversi luoghi e diverse esperienze.

Dopo il grande successo della prima edizione del 2010, anno dopo anno Ventura Lambrate ha visto crescere costantemente i propri espositori e i visitatori, arrivando fino agli oltre 80 mila dello scorso anno: quella del 2014 sarà quindi la quinta edizione, attesa dall’8 al 13 aprile.

L’anniversario sarà celebrato attraverso numerose attività, mantenendo sempre inalterata quell’atmosfera unica ed energizzante nella zona, sia di giorno che di notte: nuovi espositori, affermati designer, giovani realtà emergenti, brand, istituzioni culturali, accademie e gallerie si riuniscono in uno spazio vitale, che diventa un importante terreno dove coltivare relazioni tra progettisti, stampa, commissari, produttori e istituzioni creative, ma anche dove dare sfogo alla semplice passione per il design.

The exhibition Baas is in Town will showcase a range of objects varying from new designs to improved older creations. Baas collaborated with Ventura Projects for the exhibition, which will be the first satellite hub of Ventura Lambrate, outside of their headquarters area.

We will show a mix of objects, varying from exclusive new products, to improvised mock-ups in polystyrene foam, all in the theme of entertainment, circus and furniture fairs, says Baas.

Fetishes Flourish in Fashion Exhibition Merging the sensual with the primal in fashion and design is the focus of internationally known trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano’s curated exhibition for Ventura Lambrate. On display in the city of design and fashion, the collection addresses the innate need to attach a spirit to physical objects that are encountered on a daily basis. Everyday objects such as smartphones, tablets and clothes take on an a persona, becoming animated.

Attachment to regularly used objects can turn into fetishes of their own while a new layer becomes relevant in a world of increased mobility where we are returning to nomadism.

'Humble everyday objects can attach us to a different place, another time or an alternative state of mind. Our smartphones and tablets could therefore be considered fetishes too. After all, the word ‘fetish’ harks from West Africa, therefore, a more primitive aspect of the current mania for Africa is fitting and to be expected.

Na de Italiaanse designgemeenschap is de Nederlandse het grootst. De helft van de 240 Nederlanders zit in de wijk Ventura Lambrate. In deze oude industriewijk, die dient als alternatieve expositiewijk, zijn voormalig ontwerpers Margriet Vollenberg en Margo Konings vijf jaar geleden begonnen. De nieuwe locatie is goed betaalbaar en kent 30% Nederlandse exposanten. Afgelopen jaar waren er 80.000 bezoekers. `Wij huren locaties en verhuren ze weer door en begeleiden ontwerpers vervolgens met onder meer hun pr. De kunst is verhuurders duidelijk te maken dat ze volgend jaar de huur niet plotsklaps kunnen verdubbelen. We zitten graag hier, maar kunnen dit zo ergens anders opzetten.`

Il ‘tessuto’ di Ventura Lambrate Silvia Airoldi Da 550 application visionate, intese come proposte complete anche del concept espositivo, a 170 selezionate. Comincia da qui la quinta edizione di Ventura Lambrate, il Fuorisalone divenuto imperdibile per chi ricerca nuove interpretazioni del design, tendenze, stimoli e sperimentazione, giovani talenti. Dalla sua nascita, nel 2010, sono più che triplicati il numero dei designer partecipanti, più che duplicati gli spazi delle mostre e il numero di visitatori professionisti e non (dati 2013). Il progetto del design district milanese, creato da Organisation in Design – lo studio fondato dalle designer Margo Konings e Margriet Vollenberg da oltre dieci anni si dedica a progetti organizzativi ad ampio spettro, per il mondo del design e i suoi protagonisti, dalla comunicazione e PR al project management e alle attività di consulenza e curatela – è diventato un concept flessibile, Ventura Projects, già applicato a Berlino e alla Biennale Interieur di Kortrijk.

Within this exciting frame, Organisation in Design made the conscious decision to create a new and completely curated exhibition district called Ventura Lambrate. The project started in 2010 and quickly grew to become a cutting-edge design district with internationally acclaimed creatives, never-before-seen niche projects and extraordinary pop-up restaurants. Since 5 years, a selection of international debuting and established designers, academies, institutions, companies and labels have the opportunity to present their creations here, in a coherent design circuit to the large, influential and professional audience of the Milan Design Week.

With every edition Ventura Lambrate is shaped by its continuous focus on the essence of design and on designers’ growing capacity to expand their boundaries to research, self-production, performances and other fields such as health-care and science. Exhibitions coming from all around the globe run through each other at the individual spaces and the clustered themefurnished locations in and around the streets of ‘Lambrate’, a vibrant transitional area between urban and industrial in the northeast of Milan.

The Ventura Projects are curated exhibition areas dedicated to present international designers, design studios, design labels and brands, design institutions and galleries. Each Ventura Project presents a coherency of carefully selected exhibitions, temporary initiatives, as well as special projects, creative restaurants, etc. The Ventura Projects attract a large professional and influential audience consisting of journalist, photographers, bloggers, cultural institutions, curators and representatives from the corporate world.

The first Ventura Project originated in 2009, when – after 10 years of experience in scouting design talents and organising exhibitions in Milan – Organisation in Design met the architect and cultural entrepreneur Mariano Pichler, who was working on a major requalification project to regenerate the post-industrial borough “Lambrate” in Milan. Starting from the charming atmosphere of the Lambrate district and the desire to create a never-before-seen area during Milan’s prestigious Design Week, Organisation in Design launched the Ventura Lambrate show.

After Ventura Lambrate’s successful first and second edition, the Ventura Projects have expanded into established exhibitory circuits: the annual editions of Ventura Lambrate, the biennial Ventura Interieur and the special edition of Ventura Berlin. Every edition is committed to present the most interesting expressions of contemporary design, with a particular eye on: emerging trends and talents, debuting and established creatives, top quality and innovative design labels, new processes and production methods, conceptual and niche projects Organisation The Ventura Projects are initiated and produced by Organisation in Design, a studio specialised in managing a broad spectrum of design related activities. Organisation in Design conceived the Ventura Projects format basing on its profound knowledge of designers’ needs, on its accurate way of selecting and organising and on its capability to connect designers with companies, press and buyers in the right business situations.

Established in 2005, Organisation in Design is run by Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings, curators of the Ventura Projects. The 5th edition of Ventura Lambrate opened yesterday in Milan. The exhibition has grown substantially since it began, in a sit down with Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings they agreed that it had but that it was a natural growth not something they had aimed for when they started the event. The pair acknowledged that as the event will inevitably keep growing, there is an ever present need to balance the size of the exhibition with the quality of exhibits.

The Other Hemisphere opened today at Via Ventura 15, the second outing for the Australian curated design exhibition led by Sarah K. The presentation has 12 design practices from Australia and New Zealand attempting to simplify our built and designed world. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done this literally, conceptually, in the finished product and in the way the product makes us use it and behave. With over 24 individual designers involved in this exhibition, we see a move towards collaboration (a reflection of the true nature of designing and producing) with the distilling of many ideas into one outcome. designEX is the principal partner of The Other Hemisphere exhibition and is joined by Assemble Papers, Spicers, St Ali Coffee, La Marzocco and Bio Cup in bringing Australian and New Zealand design design to the rest of the world.

Netwerkborrel viert Nederlands ontwerp De start van de Design Week en Salone del Mobile in Milaan wordt traditiegetrouw ingeluid met een borrel ter viering van het Nederlandse ontwerp. Dit jaar werd de netwerkborrel georganiseerd door het Nederlandse Consulaat-generaal in Milaan, Het Nieuwe Instituut en het Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. Speciale gast van de avond was minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap Jet Bussemaker.

De netwerkborrel vond plaats in Lambretto Art Project in de wijk Lambrate. Deze ruimte werd voor de gelegenheid beschikbaar gesteld door de Design Academy Eindhoven, Het Nieuwe Instituut, het Textielmuseum, het Zuiderzeemuseum en CHP…? jewelry in context, waar tijdens de hele Design Week hun presentaties te bezoeken zijn.

De Design Week in Milaan is bij uitstek het moment waar de kwaliteit en diversiteit van het Nederlandse ontwerp in een internationale context tot zijn recht komt. Tijdens de Salone del Mobile staat heel Milaan in het teken van meubel- en productdesign.

Naast de beurs zelf zijn er honderden kleinere evenementen en presentaties te vinden van meubelmerken en ontwerpers.

Producenten, inkopers, journalisten en andere designprofessionals van over de hele wereld bezoeken jaarlijks dit grote evenement.

Iedere bezoeker zal het opvallen hoe aanwezig het Nederlandse ontwerp hier is.

Dit jaar bezoekt ook minister Jet Bussemaker dit evenement. Zo kan zij met eigen ogen aanschouwen hoe Nederlandse ontwerpers en merken, zowel gevestigde namen als jonge makers, in een internationale setting werken aan culturele initiatieven en commerciële successen.

Voor deze bijzondere gelegenheid was de minister ook aanwezig bij de borrel, die drukbezocht werd door Nederlandse en internationale gasten. De borrel vond plaats temidden van alle presentaties van de Design Academy Eindhoven, Het Nieuwe Instituut, TextielMuseum, Zuiderzee Museum en chp…?. De minister sprak er met de ontwerpers die hier de Nederlandse creatieve industrie vertegenwoordigen.

De samenwerking tussen alle partijen leverden een goedbezochte en levendige avond op, waarbij het ontwerp centraal stond. Het Stimuleringsfonds wil graag iedereen bedanken die heeft meegewerkt aan het slagen van deze avond.

B Qual o diferencial do Ventura Lambrate?

MM Em primeiro lugar achamos que o VL traz a criatividade não comercial de volta ao Salone, algo que tem sido ofuscado pelos grandes orçamentos de empresas que estavam vorazes para entrar em contato com o público do Fuori Salone nos últimos anos. O Ventura Lambrate começou como uma resposta às críticas e pedidos de vários designers independentes por um lugar onde pudessem se apresentar com qualidade. E hoje, depois de 4 edições, notamos que a necessidade e interesse pela nossa área é muito grande, e que o Ventura Lambrate desempenha um papel importante de centro criativo coerente, que oferece a estes expositores visibilidade dentro de um acontecimento como o Salone.

Além disso, pretendemos trazer os pioneiros do design para cá, com suas ideias, conceitos e protótipos inovadores, para ser um lugar onde o público profissional terá contato com tudo isso. Um objetivo é o de sermos uma área que oferece espaço para inscrições individuais, estreando designers, estúdios, talentos recémformados e pequenas marcas. Para cada um deles buscamos as melhores opções, de galerias únicas a exposições coletivas.

B Como vocês avaliam a evolução do Ventura Lambrate?

MM Não que seja inesperado, mas nos últimos anos nós realmente sentimos a influência que a crise teve sobre o mundo do design. Mas é exatamente este desafio que nos levou a acreditar que temos sido capazes de criar um VL melhor a cada ano; que nos permitiu acolher muitas coisas novas, inesperadas, exposições conceituais ao lado de nomes mais estabelecidos.

A importância dos Ventura Projects, de maneira geral, é que projetos inovadores são apresentados em sua fase inicial, e tem assim a oportunidade de serem escolhidos pelos profissionais certos. É

Também os espaços coletivos – Ventura Living Room, Ventura Team Up, Ventura Hive, Ventura Galleries e Garages –, e o projeto na 5 VIE em Milão de Marteen Baas, chamado Baas in Town, que será incrível.

Arnout Meijer’s Thanks for the sun, a series of lights that mimic the morning sun, daylight and setting sun through adjustable LEDs. A project that questions our throw-away culture and proved a hit during the Salone is François Duquesnoy’s ‘One Place, One Week, One Interior’ or Collectibles series. The designer spent a number of weeks travelling from city to city, collecting discarded furniture off the street. In each city he would create new items of furniture from what he found on the street, colour coding the items to match the 2 0 1feel of each city; a grey blue for Eindhoven, pale green for Normandie, O.i.D and bright red for Berlin.

Over at Piet Zwart Institute (Master Interior Architecture & Retail Design) students focussed on presenting a visible or tangible soundscape through the presentation Instruments. While audio is something immaterial, students created products that integrated sound in new ways, creating alternative ‘sonic’ experiences for contemporary home life.

The ‘sonic f.lux’ by Marco Busani and Natalie Konopelski combined lighting, water and speakers to create a beautiful hanging lamp which illustrated sounds through water ripples. As the light shines through the water, the ripples become visible not only through the water but also through the light itself (video below).

A fun project was Obsessive Cleaners by Bianca Yousef and Kleoniki Fatiadou, a quintet of miniature cleaning machines which create a micro soundscape through repetitive friction (video below).

Not Dutch, but definitely worth a mention is the group show by HEAD – Geneva University of Art and Design. Here, students had built an entire apartment complete with neon pink living room, mirrored bathroom and meeting circle. Walking around the various spaces required some skill as visitors were asked to climb ladders and fit through tiny doors. The experience itself however was refreshing as it reactivated the senses.

By Cassandra Pizzey / 15-04-2014 A few years ago Ventura Lambrate was another ‘up-and-coming neighbourhood’, packed with disused warehouses, old garages and other vacant properties. Thanks to Margriet Vollenberg and Margot Konings of Organisation in Design, this area to the north of Lambrate train station is now firmly established as a Salone del Mobile creative hub.

Ventura Lambrate became known as the spot where designers with smaller budgets were able to put on shows, an excellent spot for design schools to present themselves and the talents of tomorrow.

Like last year, the Design Academy Eindhoven presented a scaleddown version of the 2013 graduation show Self-Unself at Lambretto Art Project or LAP. Some of the students’ most promising projects were on show this time, in an exhibition curated by Thomas Widdershoven and Jan Konings. A social theme could clearly be found in the graduation show and was translated to the show at LAP. Among the designs were Inge Kuipers Tea Set Touch, a tea set made for people with arthritis who have trouble pouring out tea from a normal pot. This one has no handle and doesn’t become too hot to touch, allowing the user to gently pour out tea with two hands.

Every year at Milan, there are over 1,400 exhibitors. If each had an average of thirty products, that amounts to over 42,000 number of chairs, lights, sofas, desks and other pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories. So, for a long time, the challenge has been, how do you create something special – something innovative, unique, and perhaps even visionary?

While there is much that is innovative at the fair itself, some of the more experimental work happens in other design districts. Ventura Lambrate is a wide-ranging series of exhibitions located in Milan’s Lambrate precinct. It began in 2009 when Dutch curators Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings teamed up with architect and entrepreneur Mariano Pichler to provide a new space for design talent during Milan Design Week.

Growing each year in size and quality, this year Ventura Lambrate showed a lot of the best emerging and unknown talent, both Dutch and international. The strength of the work is due to the exhibition’s careful curation by Vollenberg and Konings, with strict judging criteria applied to each project.

At Ventura Lambrate, Australian and New Zealand design was on show as part of The Other Hemisphere. For this exhibition, curator Sarah King of Supercyclers collaborated with Vollenberg and Konings to select products from 12 design practices following a call for entries.

These are just some of the 170 exhibitors at Ventura Lambrate this year and provide a clue as to the quality and innovation of the work. And, while 170 can’t match the sheer size of the fair’s 1,400 exhibitors, if you want to see the future of design, and meet the stars of the fair in ten years’ time, Ventura Lambrate is probably your best bet.

This is the first time Tuppence will be exhibiting at the Milan Furniture Fair and he is understandably looking forward to it. Like all the participants in The Other Hemisphere he has to respond to the exhibition’s ‘Simplified’ theme and he is currently developing a new work (with the working title of Personal Tape) to be debuted at the Fair.

Tuppence’s blank ‘tape measure’ has been rendered useless, however, the designer has produced something that intends to make everyday life simple.

“Life is easier when you don’t have to remember measurements or convert these measurements from imperial to metric,” he says.

So an object measured using this blank tape measure simply becomes “this big” or “that small” as the numbers are removed from the equation.

For those not fortunate enough to be visiting Milan in April there is still the chance to see The Other Hemisphere when it tours to Sydney in May for designEX. Although Tuppence won’t be travelling to Sydney for the annual Australian trade fair he would like to eventually return to Adelaide, where he hopes to one day establish his own studio. But for now, Tuppence is enjoying his European experience.

This year’s instalment features 14 artists and designers from Australia and New Zealand. It will be held in the Fair’s popular Ventura Lambrate design district;

The Other Hemisphere is always wellreceived, due in large part to the outstanding quality of the work on display. Many of the exhibited projects are the result of collaborations with artists, designers and other companies.

Bertjan Pot and fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck, for example, as well as artists like Teun Hocks and John Körmeling. These collaborations are supported by the Centraal Museum Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The exhibition also features a preview of Baas' latest public space design: Koopgoot Collection. This collection represents especially made public furniture for the"‘Koopgoot", the main shopping street of Rotterdam.

Also, new works by Baas for Carpenters Workshop Gallery are on show for the first time. After Milan, the BAAS IS IN TOWN circus will travel on to Paris and London for exhibitions with Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

A follow-up to the Balloon Bench designed by h220430 in 2011, the Balloon Chair appears to by suspended beneath ten helium balloons.

The chair aims to recreate the feeling that Pascal, the protagonist of 1950s film Le Ballon Rouge, has when a cluster of balloons carried him over Paris, rescuing him from a group of bullies.

Milan 2014: Japanese studio h220430 has created a chair that looks like it is held in mid-air by balloons, which will go on show at Ventura Lambrate in Milan on Tuesday.

Whereas the bench was suspended from four anchor points in a ceiling to maintain the illusion of flight, the chair fixes to a wall.

The leather-covered seat is made from fibre-reinforced plastic, steel and urethane, while the balloons are made from fibre-reinforced plastic and cord, meaning they cannot be deflated.

The designers will be showing the Balloon Chair at Ventura Lambrate from 8 to 12 April, during Milan's design week.

Design District Captures Cutting Edge Talent As the latest addition to Milan Design Week’s extensive programme, Ventura Lambrate has fast become a hub for emerging talents, top schools and industry innovators. Set on the north-eastern fringe of Milan, this relatively secluded neighbourhood transforms into an energetic hot spot come April. At Frame, we love pin-pointing the latest design innovation. Here are the top Ventura Lambrate exhibitions not to be missed.

1. Berlin Design Selection – Via Ventura 5 Young successful designers from Berlin will take centre stage with everything from whimsical lights to tables with experimental surfaces. Internationally noted designer Werner Aisslinger will unveil two unseen creations, a must see for Salone’s attendees!

2. Edelkoort Exhibitions – Via Ventura 15 Lidewij Edelkoort, renowned trend forecaster, introduces the city of fashion and design to Fetishism. The curated works will merge the sensual with the primitive, becoming animated and taking on an aura of their own. Garments and a new chair as well as installations will provide context for the progressive projections.

Ventura Lambrate is dit jaar toe aan zijn vijfde editie en laat wederom zien dat de ‘gecureerde wijk’ binnen de Fuorisalone een eigen plaats inneemt.

Ligt de nadruk elders op grote en gevestigde ontwerpers en ondernemingen, Ventura Lambrate toont op verschillende manieren waar het met design naar toe kan gaan.

Tekst Robert Muis Het niveau is op de vele locaties binnen de wijk niet altijd even hoog en de getoonde ontwerpen kunnen de zoveelste variatie zijn op een bekend gegeven, maar Ventura Lambrate biedt ook het vrijere, inspirerende randje met kleinschaligheid, experiment, reflectie op het vak en exposities van opleidingen.

Elke aflevering van Ventura Lambrate lijken er meer designopleidingen en kunstacademies aan te haken. In een oude fabriekshal staat een groot deel geclusterd, met onder meer goede mini-exposities van de University of the Arts London, de HKU uit Utrecht en het Piet Zwart Instituut uit Rotterdam.

Laatstgenoemde instelling toont interessante meubel- en interieurontwerpen die ruimte en muziek verbinden, zoals een tafel met stethoscopen waaraan we naar verborgen geluiden kunnen luisteren en de Paperscape, een kamer van ruisend papier. Boeiend is ook de expositie van de Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, waar de studenten onder meer hun onderzoek naar technologische en huid-achtige oppervlakken laten zien.

OESO: Nederland moet meer halen uit steden

De ruimtelijk vormgevers van Concern tonen Supermodels, een dwarsdoorsnede van Nederlands ontwerp en architectuur op schaal. Startpunt is het verzoek geweest, dat Concern kreeg om het Nederlands paviljoen bij de Sao Paulo Designweek in te vullen. “We hebben toen ervoor gekozen om Nederlands ontwerp breed te promoten in een soort PPS-achtige constructie”, vertelt Cindy Bosma aan Architectenweb.

Het is uitgegroeid tot Supermodels, een verzameling van 3D-geprinte schaalmodellen van circa honderdtwintig Nederlandse stoelontwerpen, tien architectenhuizen en een meterslange wand met ‘poppenhuizen’ die zijn gevuld door uiteenlopende partijen als Ahrend, Auping, Scholten & Baijings en Weltevree.

Interesse in vakmanschap Nederlandse ontwerpers zijn te vinden in onder andere een aantal geclusterde of collectieve presentaties. Workmates presenteert verlichtingsarmaturen en meubels van Rick Tegelaar, de tassen van Joris de Groot, de meubels van Klaas Kuiken en de gebruiksvoorwerpen uit (vooral) steengoed van Casper Tolhuisen. De kleine maar fijne presentatie toont een duidelijke interesse in vakmanschap en materiaal.

010-020 bestaat uit dezelfde groep ontwerpers als vorig jaar, met deels eender maar ook nieuw werk. Verrassend is bijvoorbeeld de serie geurverspreiders van Studio WM. Op basis van onderzoek naar de samenstelling van parfums heeft het duo drie verschillende objecten ontworpen voor het in het interieur verspreiden van geuren met een andere drager (olie, water, alcohol). Het zijn daarbij fraaie objecten op zichzelf, net als de True Colours-vazen van Lex Pott. De serie is gebaseerd op zijn eerdere onderzoek naar het (chemisch) kleuren van metalen.

Ontwerpduo rENs heeft tapijtfabrikant Desso benaderd met hun concept om met rode verf materialen en voorwerpen uniciteit te verschaffen. Hieruit is de collectie re-vive voortgekomen, waarbij uit onverkochte vloerbedekkingsvoorraden eenmalige vloerkleden worden gemaakt, door ze handmatig te verven.

Samenwerking tussen disciplines Ventura Lambrate laat ook tal van samenwerkingsverbanden tussen partijen en disciplines zien. Deze verschuiving naar een interdisciplinaire benadering laat Organisation in Design, curator voor de expositieruimten, zien op de locatie Ventura Team Up, maar de ontwikkeling is ook elders zichtbaar.

De nieuwe demoruimte Hager Expo

In een van de oude garages vindt de bezoeker nog presentaties van rENs, Vij5, Ontwerpduo en Tonone. Ontwerpduo heeft onder meer een aardige serie spiegels met drie vlakken, gebaseerd op de oude kaptafel. Tonone laat een indrukwekkend grote kroonluchter zien van de BOLT-verlichtingsserie, gekenmerkt doordat elke lamp is voorzien van een vleugelmoer.

Tegenover deze ode aan mechaniek staat de lichtinstallatie die Bernotat & Co verderop in de straat toont: elf lampen uit een wit 3D-breisel (een zogenoemde spacer) met een glow-in-the-dark effect hangen in een hoge ruimte en gaan in verschillende patronen zacht aan en uit. De vorm – en de presentatie – zijn geïnspireerd op de microscopische organismen en bioluminiscentie. Een sprookjesachtige rust, om even bij te komen op de designtocht.

“I considered this project as a form of storytelling, where I am delivering a headline open to interpretation and perception. I used flowers and bees and though separated in the middle, it’s really an open invitation that can be a statement of love in the separation, the bee and flower as different genders, or it can also have political undertones.” – C. Petter Spilde.

“My collaboration was with Ege Carpets, which is one of the third largest carpet making factories, but the only one that produces locally in Denmark.” The designers concept involves redefining the traditional role of the carpet to something that can be engaged with. “I took a picture of a detail of the millitron machine which is used in making the carpet and let it become my motif blown up into large scale to show the mass production side of carpet making.” – Signe Marbjerg Thomsen.

In her container space, Signe designed a metal bench with slips of the carpet draped across it. “I designed this bench to showcase the textile, but also to showcase its strength. 1. Little Owl Prachtige borden van Little Owl waar Delfts Blauw op een bijzondere manier wordt gecombineerd met oude meesters.

Alles wordt met de hand geschilderd. Naast de borden was er een fantastische behangcollectie te zien.

6. Stijn Boemaars Ents is een ontwerp van Stijn Boemaars. De prachtige kast die bestaat uit meerdere kastjes wordt in evenwicht gehouden door de manier waarop de kasten met de ‘takken’ verbonden zijn. Het concept gaat over de balans tussen mens en natuur.

One of my favourite finds at Ventura Lambrate was Mass Produced Individualism by Iina Vuorivirta. Looking for something between handmade and industrially produced, Iina makes the ceramic form and then breaks it in half, creating a vase and a light shade.

I work with Zoe Tynan-Campbell at LCC, so it was really exciting to see her skittles, part of the University of the Arts London stand. They have an irresistible folk art charm and no two are the same, so you can buy one or collect as many as you like.

Handblown glass was everywhere at Milan Design Week, and sometimes the simplest designs were the most effective. Van Eijk and Van der Lubbe collaborated with glassblowers from Guatemala, using local craft techniques and recycled glass for the expanded Cantel collection.

As part of a celebration of the 100 year anniversary of acclaimed designer Hans J. Wegner, Void Chair by Simos Antoniadis and Ida Klarskov is derived from the curves of The Chair by Wegner and made from solid steel. The frame has been welded together to look like one continuous curve.

Steel Stand Table by German designer Sebastian Scherer is inspired by industrial-era architecture and made from ash or MDF with powder-coated steel legs in a variety of colors.

Shinn Asano used to work in advertising and says, “I base my ideas on graphic design, regardless of the specific design category I’m dealing with. I feel it’s important to steer away from conventional thinking and always work from a clean slate when developing a project.” This collection includes the Kagome Stool, the Giogaia Chair, and the Hitotaba Lamp.

Elisa Strozyk‘s Ceramic Tables are made from cordierite, ceramic glazes and steel or copper. The surface of each table is created using traditional glazing techniques with a contemporary twist – different liquid glazes pool and merge as the tables are rotated and blown with air to leave traces of fluidity and smoke-like patterns which are then set in the kiln.

Designer and founder of Joine Office for Design Maarten Baptist wanted to create an environment where “anything could happen” and where he could release his own products because “some products should just exist”. The Julie range of decanters for oil, water and wine, is produced in the Czech Republic, Belgium and Portugal. They remind me of little birds.

Rick Tegelaar says of his Meshmatics lamps, “I have developed a machine and a set of tools that enable me to form ‘chicken wire’ very accurately. By stretching the material over a mold it shrinks to the form taking its shape.

The lamps are covered with a layer of bamboo paper. This paper expands when moistened because of its long fibres. When the paper dries over the mesh shapes, it wraps them tightly and contributes to the structure of the lamp. In this way two very simple materials work together very well. The bamboo paper diffuses the light and makes even the most terrible energy saving bulb pleasant to have around.”

Moai by Raul Frolla are terracotta vases, inspired by Easter Island’s stone statues, can be used both indoors and outdoors on balconies and city terraces. They were shown as part of the Incipit (‘the beginning’ in Latin) stand, a Milan-based creative lab and business whose aim is to nurture young talent, share skills and business acumen, and promote young designers.

Pot Purri by the 3 Dots Collective is a range of versatile concrete and metal forms that snap together with magnets to create lightshades, bowls and vases.

Another one of my top finds was Vein by Ben Storms. Not only is it a stunning dining table, but the underside is mirrored so you can prop it up against a wall (the legs detach and slot behind), giving it a second function.

Thai Studio 248 presented The Cutting Edge Chair, inspired by the join between two materials: steel rod and teak wood. The steel rod is designed with voids, which lock the wooden structure in place, making the join more interesting by slicing the wood at an angle, drawing attention to the grain of the revealed surface.

And finally, I loved the colours and patterns in Wall Object by Sigrid Calon, part of the We Made This exhibition.

It was definitely my favourite day in Milan and I can’t wait to go back next year!

The Honest Stool is designed to be free and open source so anybody can make one, using just one wooden board, a hammer and 24 nails. Plans are available to download from designer Cas Moor‘s website.

A project that questions our throw-away culture and proved a hit during the Salone is François Duquesnoy’s ‘One Place, One Week, One Interior’ or Collectibles series. The designer spent a number of weeks travelling from city to city, collecting discarded furniture off the street. With over half of the participants at Ventura Lambrate hailing from the Netherlands, we were bound to find some of tomorrow’s talented designers. DAE, HKU, Piet Zwart and the KABK were just a few of the participating schools during the Salone del Mobile.

Over at Piet Zwart Institute (Master Interior Architecture & Retail Design) students focussed on presenting a visible or tangible soundscape through the presentation Instruments. While audio is something immaterial, students created products that integrated sound in new ways, creating alternative ‘sonic’ experiences for contemporary home life.

The ‘sonic f.lux’ by Marco Busani and Natalie Konopelski combined lighting, water and speakers to create a beautiful hanging lamp which illustrated sounds through water ripples. As the light shines through the water, the ripples become visible not only through the water but also through the light itself (video below).

A fun project was Obsessive Cleaners by Bianca Yousef and Kleoniki Fatiadou, a quintet of miniature cleaning machines which create a micro soundscape through repetitive friction (video below).

Not Dutch, but definitely worth a mention is the group show by HEAD – Geneva University of Art and Design. Here, students had built an entire apartment complete with neon pink living room, mirrored bathroom and meeting circle. Walking around the various spaces required some skill as visitors were asked to climb ladders and fit through tiny doors. The experience itself however was refreshing as it reactivated the senses.

By Cassandra Pizzey / 15-04-2014 A few years ago Ventura Lambrate was another ‘up-and-coming neighbourhood’, packed with disused warehouses, old garages and other vacant properties. Thanks to Margriet Vollenberg and Margot Konings of Organisation in Design, this area to the north of Lambrate train station is now firmly established as a Salone del Mobile creative hub.

Ventura Lambrate became known as the spot where designers with smaller budgets were able to put on shows, an excellent spot for design schools to present themselves and the talents of tomorrow.

Like last year, the Design Academy Eindhoven presented a scaleddown version of the 2013 graduation show Self-Unself at Lambretto Art Project or LAP. Some of the students’ most promising projects were on show this time, in an exhibition curated by Thomas Widdershoven and Jan Konings. A social theme could clearly be found in the graduation show and was translated to the show at LAP. Among the designs were Inge Kuipers Tea Set Touch, a tea set made for people with arthritis who have trouble pouring out tea from a normal pot. This one has no handle and doesn’t become too hot to touch, allowing the user to gently pour out tea with two hands.

Milan 2014: Japanese designer Jun Murakoshi's tableware features patterned thread tops that create a geometric lattice for supporting flowers.

"The narrow lines create unlimited patterns, the transparency and exquisiteness that each materials possess make foil each other," said the designer.

Tokyo-based Jun Murakoshi has created a collection of vases and fruit bowls called Bloom. The blown-glass tableware pieces feature small grooves on their edges, which allow thread to be criss-crossed over the tops in a geometric pattern.

Flower stems can be threaded through the small gaps between the strings or rested in the larger hole in the centre of each piece.

Originally created in 1978, the Poltrona di Proust chair became Mendini's best-known work. It was the first in a series known as Redesigns, which brought together his academic theories on the importance of historical context for design and the significance of surface appearances in a fast-moving world.

Milan 2014: Alessandro Mendini recreated his iconic Proust chair in marble for an exhibition of products shown by Italian company Robot City at Ventura Lambrate in Milan.

The Proust chair was developed after Mendini stumbled across a copy of a Neo-baroque chair while researching ideas for a fabric pattern for Cassina, influenced by the work of French writer Marcel Proust. The original version of the chair was covered in a multicoloured fabric, with a pattern carried through in its hand-painted frame, enlarging and reproducing an artwork by Pointillist artist Paul Signac.

It was originally a one-off design, but its popularity led Mendini to produce variations in limited numbers.

Made for the Italian marble company's Solid Spaces show, the new iteration of the Proust chair is an attempt to create an object with a "hyper-realist" appearance by using marble to create an "almost surreal" effect, said Robot City.

This marble version is one of four creations by different designers produced from a single 38.7-tonne block of white marble, excavated from a quarry owned by Robot City leader Gualtiero Vanelli.

The designs "give unexpected twists to the interchange between form, function, visual appearance, ergonomics, tradition and innovation", said Robot City in a statement.

The other three projects in the exhibition included shelves by Paolo Ulian, an undulating glass-topped table by Stefano Boeri, and a table with three rabbitshaped chairs by Stefano Giovannoni.

Onderzoek en ontwerp Lex Pott is de eerste ontwerper met wie het online platform en merk New Window heeft samengewerkt. Oprichter Woes van Haaften wil kunstenaars en ontwerpers uitnodigen om samen aan een project te beginnen, waarvan het eindresultaat niet op voorhand vaststaat. Het ontwerp- en productieproces moeten een belangrijke rol spelen. Boekdelen De serie Reflections is gebaseerd op het gebruik van zogenoemde boekdelen in de steen- en houtverwerking. Wanneer een steen of boomstam wordt doorgezaagd en opengeklapt (als een boek), vertonen beide delen een gespiegeld patroon.

Vanuit dit idee heeft Pott een room divider en zes muurplanken ontworpen. Bij de muurplanken wordt het tweede deel gesuggereerd, door de plaatsing van een spiegel.

De collectie omvat functionele meubels en voorwerpen, zoals een kamerscherm, kastjes en kammen, naast autonome objecten. Alle producten zijn gemaakt uit het hout van een en dezelfde spar; daarom is in elk object een 1 gebrand. De collectienaam Diptych verwijst niet naar een tweeluik, maar naar de tegenstellingen die de producten kenmerken: de geometrische en de organische vormen, de opengewerkte en de dichte delen, maar ook de controle versus het toeval bij het maken ervan.

Bij de gezandstraalde delen is het hout niet volledig weg: alleen het zachte hout wordt weggeblazen. Wat overblijft als traliewerk is het hardere hout – feitelijk de ringen die ontstaan in de perioden dat de boom traag groeide. Het zandstralen legt dus deels de geschiedenis van de boom bloot.

Het harde hout heeft een andere kleur dan de zachte delen. Door de afwerking met was en olie zijn de kleuren verdiept en de groeiringen in de dichte delen van het hout sterker zichtbaar gemaakt.

Onderzoek en ontwerp Lex Pott is de eerste ontwerper met wie het online platform en merk New Window heeft samengewerkt. Oprichter Woes van Haaften wil kunstenaars en ontwerpers uitnodigen om samen aan een project te beginnen, waarvan het eindresultaat niet op voorhand vaststaat. Het ontwerp- en productieproces moeten een belangrijke rol spelen. Voor Van Haaften was Pott “de ideale eerste deelnemer” omdat bij zijnPartners – met name onderzoekender – werk de ontstaanswijze en het uitgangsmateriaal veelal zichtbaar zijn in het resultaat.

Pott heeft een sterke interesse in natuurlijke materialen en processen. Hij werkt graag met hout, steen en metaal. De resultaten neigen soms naar kunstzinnig, maar zijn zeker zo vaak functioneel. Voorbeelden zijn de Diptych-collectie en de Transience-spiegels. Bij deze collectie, die hij samen met David Derksen heeft ontwikkeld, is het verweren van de zilveren reflectielaag van spiegels versneld met een gecontroleerde uitkomst in kleuren en geometrische vormen. Nieuwe varianten hiervan waren eveneens in Milaan te zien.

Oxidatie Een ander voorbeeld, dat ook tijdens de Milan Design Week te zien was, is de serie design True Colours Vases. De vazen zijn gebaseerd op een eerder onderzoek naar de verschillende kleuren die kunnen worden bereikt door het laten oxideren van uiteenlopende metalen. Elk metaal heeft een andere verkleuring, die bovendien organisch ‘groeit’.Het verkleuren vraagt om precieze recepten, legt Pott uit.

In eerdere instantie heeft hij dit gedaan bij metalen panelen, waarin tevens de chemische formule werd ‘geschreven’. De True Colours Vases-collectie bestaat uit strak vormgegeven vazen uit verschillende metalen, waarbij het natuurlijke proces gecontroleerd is uitgevoerd.

Local architect Mariano Pichler worked with Organisation in Design to create a new district for Milan Design Week showcasing emerging trends, new designers, innov ativ e processes and conceptual projects set against the post-industrial backdrop of Lambrate.

Lucas & Lucas, by sAnne JAnsen, sigrid Calon and Kowbedaux are this design collective based in Tilburg (area code 013), holland. They make design, fashion and art “with love for our work and a healthy (over)dose of optimism”.

Entrambe si sono laureate nel 2011 alla Design Academy di Eindhoven e hanno un proprio studio a Rotterdam.

Brit attinge a varie discipline, quali design, grafica e fotografia, per trasferire nei lavori la sua visione poetica e narrativa. Sabine, che si definisce una designer di prodotto, cerca di creare un’interazione tra l’oggetto e il suo utilizzatore, ritenendo i progetti delle esperienze. All’interno di ‘Happy Future’, la mostra del collettivo Dutch Invertuals in via Pastrengo 12, hanno presentato Seeing Glass. Gli oggetti in vetro sono l’esito di una sperimentazione sul materiale e i particolari effetti ottici che si ottengono dalla sua lavorazione. Interessanti l’uso del colore e delle stratificazioni.

Brit delves into various media, such as design, graphics and photography, to convey her poetic and narrative vision. sabine describes herself as a product designer who aims to shape interaction between object

and user, seeing her designs as experiences. no. 12 Via Pastrengo was venue to the ‘happy Future’ exhibition by the Dutch Invertuals collective, and this included the duo’s seeing glass. The glass items are the fruit of experimentation with this material and the unusual optical effects achieved by working it. The use of colour and layering are particularly interesting.

At no. 2 Via Ventura they presented ‘We made it!’: furnishings and accessories. reflection Collection by Lucas & Lucas includes three seats, three lights and one floor-standing mirror, all conceived for hanging items and observing oneself from a different perspective. MILAAN DESIGNWEEK 2014: HAPPY! Met meer dan 300.000 bezoekers uit 160 landen en 2400 deelnemende bedrijven is de 53e editie van de internationale meubelbeurs vorige week in Milaan het belangrijkste evenement op interieur- en designgebied ter wereld. De stad Milaan maakte ook dit jaar zijn naam als designhoofdstad van de wereld helemaal waar met spectaculaire presentaties en hippe events verspreid over de hele stad.

Zo vierden de Nederlandse organisatoren van ’Ventura Lambrate’ hun vijfjarig jubileum met grote namen als Jaime Hayon, Design Academy Eindhoven, Lidewij Edelkoort en meer dan 140 andere vooraanstaande designers, musea, universiteiten en opkomende merken.

Nieuw was ’5VIE’ rondom de Duomo, de beroemde kathedraal van Milaan, met kunstenaars en ontwerpers ’verstopt’ in garages, kleine galeries of een oud palazzo. Hier was het Maarten Baas die, verkleed als circusdirecteur, letterlijk en figuurlijk de show stal met zijn werk geïnspireerd op het circus. Dat Nederlanders in Milaan nog steeds trendsettend zijn, bewees het collectief Dutch Invertuals. Zij haakten met het thema ’happy future’ in op een wereldwijde trend, waarin we op zoek gaan naar dat wat ons echt gelukkig maakt en hoe design hierin kan bijdragen.

Ook in het rijtje ’wereldberoemd’ zijn het Nederlanders die in de top 10 staan met wederom prachtige ontwerpen van bijvoorbeeld Scholten & Baijings, Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek, Roderick Vos en Hella Jongerius. Daarnaast zijn Patricia Urquiola, Nendo en Luca Nichetto interessante personen om te googelen, om een snelle indruk te krijgen van de laatste trends op interieurgebied. Uit het enorme aanbod van speelse, kunstzinnige, sociaal-maatschappelijke en duurzame noviteiten hier een selectie ter inspiratie voor een nieuwe kijk op interieur en design.

Architectenweb presenteert gedurende een aantal weken een serie over Nederlands ontwerp dat tijdens de Milan Design Week 2014 is gepresenteerd. In de vijfde aflevering de collectie handmatig gekleurde vloerkleden re-vive van rENs. In een oude garage in Ventura Lambrate exposeerde rENs – het ontwerpduo Renee Mennen en Stefanie van Keijsteren – vloerkleden die handmatig waren gekleurd met rode verfstoffen. Ze demonstreerden er ook hoe het verven in zijn werk gaat. In samenwerking met tapijtfabrikant Desso heeft rENs op basis van oud tapijt de collectie re-vive ontwikkeld. rENs kleurt de kleden in banen, doordat telkens een strook langer in het verfbad wordt gedompeld dan de volgende. De kleden krijgen een gradiënt met horten en stoten, als het ware. Het resultaat is per kleed anders, als gevolg van het handmatige werk maar ook naar gelang het materiaal en de poollengte van de vloerkleden zijn de kleuren anders.

Experimenten Mennen en Van Keijsteren experimenteerden al enige tijd met de toepassing van rode verfstoffen op verschillende materialen. Het tweetal onderzocht de toepassing van een rood pigment op keramiek, op verschillende weefsels en bij verschillende houtsoorten.

Onderdompeling in een bad met hetzelfde rode pigment kan compleet verschillende resultaten opleveren. Dat Mennen en Van Keijsteren handmatig de voorwerpen onderdompelen, versterkt nog eens het verschil in resultaten. Zo hebben zij onder meer een kledingserie gemaakt, waarbij elk stuk uniek is. Geïnteresseerden konden voor ‘Rood by rENs’ een kledingstuk aanleveren, dat vervolgens door de ontwerpers gekleurd werd.

Oude tapijten, nieuwe collectie Met onder meer een dergelijke kledingserie heeft het duo laten zien dat van bestaande producten en materialen door het toevoegen van rode kleurstoffen nieuwe en eenmalige voorwerpen kunnen worden gemaakt. Benieuwd naar het resultaat als verschillende tapijtkwaliteiten in hetzelfde rode verfbad worden gedompeld, heeft rENs met het concept Desso benaderd.

Voor de vloerkleden die worden gekleurd, gebruiken de ontwerpers oude tapijtcollecties. De kleur rood krijgt hiermee bijna een dubbele betekenis: een waarschuwingssignaal dat er vandaag de dag teveel onnodig verspild wordt. rENs en Desso laten zien hoe de levensduur van een product kan worden verlengd, door het te vernieuwen.

Op een van de locaties in Ventura Lambrate slingerde een tafel als een rivier door de oude fabriekshal. Met de tafel heeft Studio Maks (Marieke Kums, Gorka Beitia Zarandona, Alessia Nociaro, Zsófia Szoke) dan ook eerder een landschap dan een meubel willen maken. De zogeheten Cloud Table is een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van een tafel als plek voor netwerken en het uitwisselen van informatie, zo legt het architectenbureau uit.

Ontmoeting Met een oppervlak van zeventig vierkante meter is de tafel veel meer dan een gewoon meubel; de Cloud Table creëert, in de woorden van Studio Maks, een architectonische ruimte. Het slingerende blad biedt ruimte en meer besloten hoekjes, waar mensen elkaar kunnen ontmoeten, overleggen, werken of ontspannen.Volgens de ontwerpers is de Cloud Table een ‘event table’, die de communicatie bevordert. Daarbij faciliteert de tafel niet alleen de fysieke, maar ook de virtuele ontmoeting.

Marieke Kums vertelt aan Architectenweb: “Er is een high speed wifi-cloud om de tafel heen gecreëerd, die mensen aan de tafel een snelle verbinding biedt met het internet en ze in staat stelt om met de rest van de wereld te communiceren.

Daarnaast zijn er op verschillende plaatsen in de houten tafel onzichtbaar – maar wel gemarkeerd – draadloze telefoonopladers geïntegreerd. Bezoekers hebben bij dit soort evenementen (als de Milan Design Week, red.) eerder smartphones dan laptops bij zich.”

Horizon De Cloud Table is door Studio Maks speciaal voor Ventura Lambrate ontworpen en is een vervolg op de Study Table (2013). Die eveneens meanderende tafel is als studielandschap ontworpen voor de universiteitsbibliotheek in Hongkong.

“Voor de Study Table hebben we destijds een exact programma van eisen opgekregen: zoveel meter studietafel, zo veel meter meeting-tafel, zoveel meter lounge, enzovoorts. Die tafels verschillen in lengte, breedte en hoogte”, vertelt Kums. “Vervolgens hebben we die tafels aaneengeschakeld tot een honderdvijftig meter lange tafel. Zo is de lineaire, meanderende Study Table ontstaan.”

Voor de Cloud Table leek het de ontwerpers interessanter om een nieuw soort interieurlandschap te genereren, ‘een bepaalde ruimtelijke conditie in plaats van een programmagestuurde tafel’, aldus Kums. “Om zo’n landschap, een soort horizon, te creëren, hebben we de Cloud Table veel meer breedte-oppervlak gegeven, in combinatie met een centralistischer in plaats van een lineaire layout.”

"The pattern collection is purposely not attached to a particular product or end use, but left as just the pattern, with the premise that it can be applied to anything from paper to fabric, to wood to walls," explained the designers, who exhibited the collection at Ventura Lambrate in Milan earlier this month.

Milan 2014: illustrator Stephan Cheetham and interior designer Jessica Pinotti of All The Fruits have created a range of colourful, pre-glued wallpaper that doesn't need to be matched or aligned to cover walls (+ slideshow).

The rolls feature different patterned sections designed to compliment each other in any combination, so they can be plastered onto the walls without too much consideration. The patterns are digitally printed onto paper that is preglued on the back, making it easy to stick to walls and removed if needed.

Designs include block colours in different sized strips, a grey and white grid pattern and a zig-zagging green graphic. A dusky pink background scattered with small white stars forms another design, along with a plain white background patterned with coloured bow-tie shapes.

Other designs feature pastel shades, collections of triangles and brightly coloured long, intersecting lines.

Furniture by the late Flemish designer Maarten van Severen was presented against the backdrop of a tromp l'oeil installation developed by Dutch studio OMA at Milan design week earlier this month (+ slideshow).

The collection features basic furniture archetypes redesigned using surprising or inventive combinations of materials including saddle leather, wood and aluminium.

It was originally launched at Lensvelt's showroom in Amsterdam last September, where OMA's custom-designed environment was also first installed before being recreated at Ventura Lambrate in Milan.

The scenography combined photography and illustrations with trompe l'oeil imagery, aimed at recreating the sense of being inside Van Severen's former studio.

The designer was a friend and collaborator of OMA founder Rem Koolhaas and the pair worked together on projects including the Maison a Bordeaux and Villa dall'Ava in France. Koolhaas has said that working with Van Severen marked "a sort of important moment in my own professional life."

The First Series presented by Dutch furniture manufacturer Lensvelt comprises pieces designed by Van Severen between 1986, when he founded his studio in the Belgian city of Ghent, and his death in 2005.

The furniture series includes a low chair formed from a single sheet of bent aluminium and an armchair with its arms and backrest made from a curving piece of rigid leather.

"What makes Maarten’s collection so special is his use of materials for specific applications that no one had thought of before," said Lensvelt.

"And not just one material. It could be bakelite or saddle leather or another type of leather – or aluminium or wood or steel. Whatever it was, he always managed to get out of a material all that was conceivably possible."

"I've included the collection in our product line because I think the aesthetic quality of these designs is incredibly good," Lensvelt added. "I think they're beautiful, and my personal definition of 'beautiful' is 'in proportion'. Everything in the collection is precisely proportioned."

Lensvelt previously collaborated with Maarten van Severen and OMA on projects including the Seattle Central Library and the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, and took over production of the designer's furniture last year.

Celebrating its fifth year in 2014 and continuing to evolve and expand its offering, Ventura Lambrate is a thriving, and indispensable, component in the relevance and energy of the Milan Design Week.

Just outside the ring road that delineates the centre of Milan, Ventura Lambrate (VL) takes place in an area whose industrial past has left it uniquely equipped to host the event.

As such there is a slightly heterogenous, spontaneous feeling to the arrangement both between and within venues, as smaller exhibition spaces might be easily spotted whilst entire halls require a more dedicated perusal.

In terms of the exhibits themselves, VL is the only fully curated element in the Milan Design Week, with Dutch duo Margriet Vollenberg and Margot Konings exercising their extensive experience and expert eye to compile an eclectic and stimulating programme; this year the precinct accepted around 170 of the 500 applicants, from all around the world.
