The opening session of the 2024 General Connectional Board (GCB) commenced on Monday, September 2nd, with Senior Bishop Lawrence Reddick presiding. The opening hymn, “Come, Thou Almighty King,” seemed an appropriate selection, for amid the praise, it served as a prayer that God would lead the members of the CME Church in the days ahead. Bishop James Walker offered prayer, and the Scripture reading, read by Bishop Sylvester Williams, included the selected verses from Proverbs 22, vv. 1-2, 7-8, and 22-23. Closing the devotional service was a selection by the Connectional Music and Arts Ministry: “And We Are Glad.”

The opening business session included elements of organization with the roll call of GCB members, as well as reports from Bishop Teresa Snorton – Program Development Officer and Dr. Pené Woods – Chief Administrative Officer. Both reports were presented for informational purposes only.

Bishop Snorton reported on the work of her office, acknowledging the implementation of three grants: “Bold Money Matters,” “Reimagining Children’s Ministry,” and “Faithful Parenting.” Bold Money Matters addresses economic challenges facing pastoral leaders, while Reimagining Children’s Ministry addresses the nurture of children through worship and prayer. Faithful Parenting is the Christian parenting and caregiver initiative, designed primarily to ensure parents are equipped with tools and resources to lead their children in all things spiritual. She also announced the implementation of two

new grants: “Compelling Preaching,” in partnership with Philips School of Theology’s Pastors’ Conference, and the “Capacity Building” grant for the Program Development Office. She emphasized the importance of building our capacity, moving past ministry at Thanksgiving and Christmas to ongoing ministry efforts, and demonstrating fiscal responsibility when using grant funds. She concluded by offering her support and expertise to churches in need of consultation and technical assistance in writing their own grant proposals, and she expressed appreciation to persons who have been instrumental in the work of the office thus far.

Dr. Woods shared the work of her office from September 2023 through August 2024. She insisted that we must understand the shifts in demographics in order to develop relevant growth strategies that increase the likelihood of better attendance at conferences and meetings at every level. She argued that we must remain culturally relevant while remaining true to core theological beliefs, and that we have to find innovative ways to compete for the attention of persons who may not prioritize attending worship regularly. She outlined the priorities of the CAO and reported the negotiations of several contracts for connectional and regional gatherings. She concluded by expressing appreciation for her team and by highlighting renovations to the CME Headquarters in Memphis, TN, inviting CMEs to stop by the Headquarters and witness the “Strengthening of Our Spiritual Home.”

Following the initial meeting of the General Connectional Board, members were dismissed to engage in the work of various Standing Committees and Commissions with the expectation of reporting their work the following day.

In all, Labor Day 2024 was filled with labors of love on behalf of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Excerpts from the September 2, 2024 General Secretary’s 2024 Report of Ministry for The Christian Index

The Official Organ of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church - Since 1867 Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor

The Work in General The duties and expectations of The Christian Index and its Editor are described in the most current edition of The Book of Discipline of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

The heart is the major organ of the human circulatory system. It pumps the blood, which scripture says is the life of a living being, through the blood vessels which carry the blood throughout the body. This is what The Christian Index is for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It is not the life of our church, for the life of the church is the Spirit of God who gave it. The Index does, however, push the life of the Spirit throughout the denomination in order that we may have life and live. It delivers this vitality to not just the preachers, but also to the members and all who receive a subscription.

The Index does this exactly as described in various biblical texts. Isaiah 35:3-4 says, “Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.” It is the place where the converted Peters of the church can serve according to Luke 22:32 and “strengthen the brethren.” In its pages, iron sharpens iron, and we work together to further build the CME Church upon the foundation of Christ, “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” (Ephesians 4:12-16 (KJV) We learn of Connectional hardships and bear collective burdens. We discover and rediscover and reinforce our unity as a body in Christ. We participate in each other’s sorrows and share sympathizing tears, and we are prompted to heartfelt, intercessory prayers.

For those general departments and Connectional ministries among us which do not have an individual publication, The Christian Index continues to provide opportunity and space for a national and international voice ... Through the ministry of The Christian Index this Editor has striven to invite all the pastors and laity of the CME Church to bolster individual faith, to embolden the church to the work of ministry, and to testify to the name and power of Jesus to change lives, bring sinners to repentance, heal families and communities, and impact governmental and societal structures, among other good works.

The Christian Index continues to serve as a vehicle for inquiry and for exhortation. During the past year, editorials and articles have promoted the unity of our international denomination and of the church, promoted the Bold Steps plan for the ongoing life of the local and Connectional church, covered election politics and various social concerns, promoted the ministries and achievements of our chaplains and scholars, transmitted the programs and value of our CME-affiliated schools, highlighted the accomplishments of our children and youth, demonstrated the necessity and continuation of Christian ministry from generation to generation, and lifted the wisdom of God in creating diverse ethnic groups, the inclusiveness of ecumenism, and the beauty of multiculturalism. Because of the work of God in you and in me, the life of the Spirit flows through the letters found in the pages of The Christian Index.

“There is power, power, wonder working power in the blood of the Lamb…”

The Holy Communion service was very uplifting, spirit-filled, engaging, empowering, thought-provoking, and right on time, as the services reminded us of the wonder working power of the blood of the Lamb…from the prelude to the recessional. The Connectional Music and Arts Ministry, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Valencia Edner, was exceptional. The audience was engaged as they lifted holy hands, and their voices rang with hallelujahs as the choir engaged the attendees with sweet melodies from above.

The scripture readings reminded attendees of who and what belongs to the Lord and why Holy Communion is celebrated. Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr. and Senior Bishop Lawrence Reddick read the Old Testament and New Testament scriptures with boldness and power.

During the Ministry of Giving, Bishop C.K. Heath reminded attendees that Jesus is watching us when we give. He used Mark 12:41 as a reference. After being challenged with the word of God, those in attendance were fired up and ready to give their best offering unto the Lord.

After much anticipation, the moment had finally arrived for God’s messenger for this Holy Communion Service, Bishop Teresa Snorton. Bishop Snorton is the Ecumenical Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Her message challenged us to be bold, face now, and see new, calling each hearer to self-examination.

Bishop Snorton’s message came from Exodus 1:8: “Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done.” The title of her message: “When There is a Failure to Communicate.”

Bishop Snorton said communication creates the ethos in the environment that we desire, and when there is a failure to communicate, we end up with a verse like Exodus 1:8. She reminded the listening audience that there are consequences when one fails to communicate. She reminded attendees that when they fail to communicate there will be breakdowns in relationships, and chaos and confusion will surface in the home and neighborhood.

She ended her message by saying there is hope! Thank God for hope! The hope is in Jesus! There was a breakdown in communication between God and man, Jesus bridged the breakdown between the two …

She left us with these words to ponder. If the church is going to be the church God has called it to be, then the church must make “Good Trouble.” She stated that Jesus was known to make “Good Trouble” – Jesus healed on the wrong day of the week, he ate with sinners … God is calling his people today to make “Good Trouble.”

Today, history was made in a sacred space filled with reverence and anticipation as two groundbreaking leaders took the stage: Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, [the 59th] and first female bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Retired, the 17th bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Their presence signifies a monumental shift in a landscape long characterized by traditional leadership roles. Today, we celebrate not just their appointments, but the embodiment of a collective dream nurtured over generations.

[Bishop McKenzie, who presently serves as President and General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, gave the keynote address for the Unity Summit.] The theme of her address, “The Efficacy of Tenacity,” resonated deeply with attendees. She elaborated on this concept by emphasizing that tenacity is not simply persistence; it is an enriched commitment to uplift one another amidst adversity. The recent challenges the world faces—the trials that threaten to tear communities apart—have only heightened the call for unity and resilience.

Her words wove through the gathering like a balm, affirming the strength found within communities of faith. “We serve at the divine intersection of difference; it’s in our diversity that we find strength, not division,” she asserted, echoing the sentiment that has long characterized spiritual leadership.

The speaker expressed a deep conviction that we are at a crucial moment in history, where our choices today will significantly impact the future. This isn’t just an ordinary day; it symbolizes a pivotal time filled with challenges, particularly ongoing racial injustices faced by various marginalized groups. [She] emphasized that systemic injustices, such as violence against Black individuals, mass incarceration, and inequitable access to education, are prevalent issues that demand immediate attention and engagement. The tone highlights a sense of urgency and the need for collective action to address these societal problems, stressing that we cannot ignore the struggles occurring across the nation.

[Bishop McKenzie went on to emphasize] the impact of “trouble,” suggesting that while it can disrupt peace, it can also be a catalyst for necessary change. She quoted historical figures like John Lewis and Rosa Parks, highlighting the importance of getting “in good trouble” to make progress against injustices. The speaker warned against neutrality in the face of oppression, citing Bishop Tutu’s view that it aligns one with the oppressors. Trouble expresses hope, she said, reminding the audience to stay grounded in faith amid challenges, and to celebrate the ongoing work of the National Council of Churches (NCC) in advocating for social justice. The message urged collective action, inviting listeners to participate in this mission, and stressed the importance of faith communities working together to amplify their voices in pursuit of equality. The bishop called for unity and engagement in addressing societal issues, recognizing that such collaboration can be uncomfortable but is necessary for progress.

Bishop McKenzie also emphasized the importance of unity among faith communities to address social inequalities, particularly in urban areas. She advocated for ensuring that the voices of faith are heard both within their communities and beyond, noting that collaboration can make some uncomfortable, which is why efforts often arise to divide and conquer. The speaker calls for greater focus on major issues rather than getting bogged down in minor details and urges communities not to let threats against their nonprofit status or narrowed focuses limit their activism. She asserts that faith should compel believers to engage with societal issues, as combating injustice and advocating for change are key responsibilities of faith communities.

This United States is the richest nation and is undergoing a transformation, navigating the complexities of life and the world’s opportunities. Her message was one of solidarity, urging faith groups to stand together against oppression and work actively towards justice. It highlights that Jesus offers us the kingdom, and the act of asking for guidance or blessings is not a one-time request but a continuous process. Bishop McKenzie reflected on ongoing challenges, asserting that true understanding and support come from perseverance and faith, even in the face of personal pain or difficulty.

Ministers’ Spouses Widows & Widowers Department (MSWWD) Holds Annual Business Meeting Submitted by Mrs. Andrea Couch

The MSWWD held their annual meeting and elections during the Unity Summit. The meeting was called to order by the President, Lady Felecia Johnson.

The National Theme Song was sung and led by Lady Debora Gant. The Parliamentarian, Lady Clara Dickerson, provided instructions on the process for elections of the executive board members. A motion was made to accept the agenda, a vote was held, and the motion was carried.

A memorial service was held and led by Lady Regina Dillard, Worship Leader. She provided a tribute for deceased members in which their names were called and a bell was rung in their honor. A prayer was extended by Rev. Lady Deirdre Pierce. Lady Geneva Richmond graced us with the song, “Just to Behold His Face.” A meditation was conducted by Lady Darlene Hopkins. The service was closed with a prayer by Lady Regina Dillard.

President Felecia Johnson acknowledged special guest. The chairperson of the Social Concerns Committee, Lady Lynette Cradle, presented a $1,000 gift to two outreach ministries in Dallas, Texas. In addition, the Social Concerns Committee provided a $1000 scholarship each to Miles, Paine, Lane, and Texas Colleges to distribute among students of their choice. Bishop Kwame L. Adjei, Patron Bishop, greeted the spouses and all in attendance.

Reports were presented from standing committees as follows: Lady Barbara Caine, Scholarship Committee.

The Episcopal Districts provided seven (7) Barbara Hoye Sommerville scholarships. The recipients were: Ty’Jaylon Pugh (1st), Jayden-Anthoney Hill (3rd), Gabrielle Symone Terry (4th), Landon Z. Wilson (6th), Anthony J. Smoaks II (7th), Jayden W. Lewis (8th), and Grayson Chalk (9th). Lady Carolyn Hassell, Widows & Widowers Committee, provided a report titled “The Faith of a Widow/Widower.” The final report was provided by the president, Lady Felecia Johnson, which included activities and events, achievements and milestones, and future plans.

Lady Angela Scott, Chair of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate for the Executive Board Committee Members for the 2024-2026 conference years. The slate was presented as follows: President, Lady Felecia Johnson; Vice President, Lady Carolyn Hendricks; 1st Vice President, Lady Marilyn Mitchell; Financial Secretary, Lady Andrea Couch; Recording Secretary, Lady Rose Willis; Worship Leader, Lady Regina Dillard; Treasurer, Lady Wanda Henry; Membership, Lady Sandra Holt; Corresponding Secretary, to be announced; Parliamentarian, Lady Clara Dickerson; and 2nd Vice President, to be appointed. Each member ran unopposed. Bishop Adjei [conducted] the election. A motion was made to accept the slate, a 2nd received, and the motion was carried. A prayer was given by Lady Regina Dillard and meeting was adjourned by President Lady Felecia Johnson.

Last year’s meeting minutes were presented and read by Lady Rose Willis, Recording Secretary. A motion was made to accept the minutes, a vote was held, and the motion was carried. On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the Rev. Dr. Reginald Barnes, General Secretary of the Board of Personnel Services, moderated the “Making Good Trouble Roundtable.” Dr. Barnes opened the session with a reflection on the late United States House Representative John Lewis of Georgia, stating that Lewis felt obligated to get into ‘Good Trouble’. Dr. Barnes also referred to the Summer Protests of 2020, which caught the attention of the entire nation. These reflections by Dr. Barnes laid the foundation for the opening statements by the panelists: Rev. Reginald Walton, Rev. Dr. Jeremy Williams, PhD., and Rev. Amber Lowe-Woodfork.

Rev. Walton shared in his opening remarks that the CME Church had been engaging in ‘Good Trouble’ long before Rep. Lewis coined the term. He referenced the petition of former slaves to [the M.E. Church, South, to form their own church, and that the Missionary Society of the CME Church came into existence because someone stood up on the floor of the General Conference. Rev. Walton expressed that every community has an issue, and as Nehemiah did, the church must organize seeking the welfare of those within and beyond.

Dr. Williams proposed two different interpretations of the Bible are present in America. The first group is those who believe America can be saved only by imposing their moral beliefs on others. This group is anti-women, anti-black, anti-LGBT, etc., and they do so in the name of Jesus. The other interpretation greatly recognizes America needs salvation. This group recognizes God is not merely concerned about the spiritual needs but also the physical needs. Dr. Williams continued his dialogue stating we must use the Bible to call out injustice. In his elaboration of a speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he emphasized the words of Jesus to Nicodemus, “You must be born again.”

No one issue was highlighted. This battle we are in must be approached from a holistic perspective.

Rev. Lowe-Woodfork challenged the audience to look at the issue of evil. What is evil? Is it an abstract force?

Can we touch it? If it has a face, what does it look like?

How can a comprehensive understanding help us? LoweWoodfork expanded her dialogue by referencing Dr. Emilie Townes, who has provided an in-depth look at the cultural production of evil. It is ingrained in our society: schools, churches, police departments, healthcare systems, etc. To 8

eradicate evil, is a process, and we can look to Jesus who taught us how evil manifests and refuses to be tempted.

Following the opening statements, Dr. Barnes posed several questions. Do you think there is a biblical mandate [ to make good trouble]? What is justice? We’re in this political cycle, and everyone seems ready. How can we get our churches to engage outside of election cycles? What is organizing? How do we reconcile Christian Nationalism?

The panelists each gave captivating and exacting statements utilizing Exodus 9:1, Micah 6:8, and Luke 4:18.

Here are a few statements from the panelists in response to the questions posed by Dr. Barnes: Rev. Walton: • “Bishop Joseph A. Johnson in 1978 wrote, ‘Every ministry in our community should be involved with the boards and organizations of our communities. The local church must take its place.’”

• “It is incumbent upon all of us to do something. We can worship, but do people in our neighborhoods know how to read? There are hungry people in our neighborhoods. Doing something requires us to sacrifice … money and time.”

Dr. Williams: • “The person who changes one life changes the world entirely. You may not have many people, but your church can be used for meetings.”

• “Diagnosing is a part of what we should do. The church and preachers have a particular space where they can engage in good trouble. Use the scripture to analyze the holes in society but speak also to what it can be.”

Rev. Lowe-Woodfork: • “In Exodus, the suffering and the cries of the people reached the Lord. Moses was called to lead the people from Egyptian Bondage. Tell Pharaoh to let my people go so they will worship me. The spirit of God is a force of Justice. Justice is not showing up after an event. It’s the absence of injustice.”

• “Getting to the root cause of the issue. Crime is tied to poverty, which is systematic.”

Training RE Voting: The final action is mobilization. There are Rev. Michael McBride two avenues that can be Submitted by Dr. Rita Washington

Rev. Michael McBride (aka Pastor Mike) is the lead pastor of The Way Church in Berkeley, California. He gave a very powerful message on what the church needs to do in the upcoming November election. Pastor Mike let us know that in order to make good trouble during this election season, churches need to focus on the following three things: registration, education, and mobilization.

Registration is the first action for the church to accomplish. Each church is to ensure that every eligible voter within its congregation is registered and ready to vote. He provided the following website www.blackchurchpac.org/vote for persons to check their voter registration status, register to vote, and see what is on your ballot.

Education is the second action that the church should achieve as we prepare for the November election. The church must be the protectors of our freedoms. The right-wing political vision has not ever included Black people. Therefore, we must educate our people about the importance of their vote. If voting

taken – one is as the church and the other is as an individual. Individuals can join the Black Church PAC wherein individuals join and can take public political positions. Weekly rhythm is needed to take regular action. On Mondays – there are Zoom calls; Tuesdays and Thursdays – anyone can sign up to contact/text voters in a zip code. Low propensity voters need to be touched at least 5 times.

Pastor Mike is the executive director for LIVE FREE USA, a national organizing and social change network committed to ending the criminalization of people of color, reducing gun violence, and transforming the policing and criminal justice system.

In concluding, Pastor Mike informed us of an upcoming event: Kirk Franklin Reunion Tour, wherein persons can meet up and volunteer with Black Church Action. The Black Church Action is a resource for the CME Church. No subscription is required. They want our participation so that we, the Black Church, can mobilize our communities, stand strong, and show the strength of our collective voice.

On September 4, 2024, a cloudy day in Dallas, TX, ushers from across the connection gathered at North Park CME Church for an essential training session led by Sister Dorruth Boyd, the Connectional Usher President. Over thirty dedicated ushers attended, united by the common goal of enhancing their service and ensuring a seamless worship experience. As part of the CME Unity Summit, Sister Boyd emphasized, “It is our responsibility to get the word out there so we can be effective in doing our jobs on all levels.” Her leadership indicated that while each usher has individual duties, they are all part of one board, working together as a unit. The session covered critical usher protocols, highlighting their role in creating a welcoming, organized church atmosphere. Maintaining order and keeping aisles clear was emphasized as one of the top priorities. The following were the essential protocols discussed: Greetings and Welcomes: Ushers were reminded of the importance of offering friendly, warm greetings to all attendees, making them feel welcomed. Being ready to answer any questions related to seating, the location of restrooms, or other logistical details ensures that everyone feels comfortable and informed. They also discussed strategies for efficiently distributing materials such as bulletins, programs, and other necessary items that ensure all attendees have what they need for the service.

Seating Assistance: A significant portion of the training was devoted to the proper way to escort attendees to their seats. Ushers practiced guiding guests to available seats while being mindful of special seating preferences for dignitaries, elderly attendees, or those with special needs.

Demonstrations and Practical Exercises: The training session was not just theoretical; it included practical demonstrations where seven ushers practiced various positions and movements within the church. They stood in assigned positions, rehearsing the hand signals used to communicate with each other during the service. This exercise highlighted the importance of precision and teamwork in their duties.

Hand Codes for Communication: A key element of the training was the discussion of hand codes—discreet signals used by ushers to communicate needs during services without interrupting the flow. For example, the code “2b” indicates a request for a bulletin, “3e” for an offering envelope, and “4f” for a fan. These codes ensure that ushers can respond to attendees’ needs quickly and quietly.

In addition to covering usher protocols, the session also explored strategies for spreading knowledge about proper ushering practices to local churches and pastors. One innovative idea proposed was to have ushers train preachers on trial to educate and align them with the ushering protocols. This would ensure a cohesive approach to church service management across all levels. The experience of this training session echoes the wisdom of Psalm 84:10, which says, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” This verse served as a reminder that ushering is a sacred duty, and working together in unity enhances the worship experience for all.

EVERY CHAPLAIN IS A MINISTER, BUT EVERY MINISTER IS NOT A CHAPLAIN. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Chaplain ministry is alive, thriving, and soaring to new heights. The Chaplain’s Breakfast was opened by Chaplain Geraldine Daniels. The prayer was offered

by Chaplain Adrian Duckett. Over 30 chaplains were in attendance, along with Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, Endorsing Agent and Ecumenical and Development Officer of The CME Church; Bishop Thomas Brown, co-endorsing agent and Presiding Prelate of the 6th Episcopal District; and Bishop James B. Walker, Presiding Prelate of the 7th Episcopal District.

Secretary Chaplain Bobby Goliday presented an overview of the collaborative retreat for Chaplains, which was endorsed by CME, AME, and AMEZ (historically Black Methodist Churches) held in Dunwoody, GA, January 11-12, 2024. The purpose of the retreat was to encourage the coming together of Black Methodist Chaplains to enhance relationships, embrace Black Methodist history, and empower the presence of bold and relevant service. The Theme was “Engaging the Challenges of Culture, Church, and Vocation.” The retreat will be held every two years, and all chaplains are encouraged to attend.

The Retreat was hosted by Bishop Teresa Snorton, Bishop Jeffrey Leath, The AME Church, and Dr. Vergel Lattimore and Dr. J. Elvin Sadler, The AME Zion Church. The next retreat will be held in January 2025.

Chaplain Lamont Johnson presented the treasurer’s report. Chaplain Johnson highlighted the importance of paying dues as the Chaplains are not funded in the CME Connectional Budget. Chaplains must raise their own resources to pay for national organizational memberships which they are required to join (for example, the ACPE, which is “The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education” accreditation), offset

The chaplains celebrated the promotion of Chaplain Keith Ellison, who serves in the U.S. Navy; Chaplain Shonda Wilkins, as a newly commissioned officer; and Chaplain Cindy Causey’s imminent graduation.

Challenges facing fellow chaplains including bereavement, physical injury, and other concerns were acknowledged and prayers offered.

Chaplains acknowledged that there are still concerns about how to address LBGTQI-related issues and the shortage of chaplains to meet the needs of prisons, hospitals/health facilities, the military, first responders, universities and schools and other places of service. As a consequence of the shortage many chaplains are working longer hours (many work 12-hour shifts) in multiple sites. The group acknowledged the need for more persons to consider the chaplaincy as a ministerial option. All chaplains are ministers, but not all ministers are chaplains.

This is a specialized ministry which provides spiritual guidance and support to people from all walks of life and faith traditions. A committee was formed to review the 2022 Discipline in the areas of chaplaincy and specialized ministries.

Chaplain Myeisha Stapleton is currently pursuing board certification which will enable her to obtain credentials enabling her to teach CPE courses. The chaplains were advised that a pilot program is being initiated in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th episcopal districts to bring the CME CPE course closer to those who require CPE credit for admission into full connection.

Bishop Snorton invited the chaplains (and others) to enroll in a Doctor of Ministry cohort: Pastoral Care and Congregational Life/Social Justice course offered at Payne Theological Seminary (Wilberforce, Ohio campus). Bishop Teresa E. Snorton will be coteaching this course with Dr. R. Evans Yancy, Author/ Church Leader/Treasurer, Turner Chapel AME Church, Marietta, GA. 2024 GCB and Unity Summit Continued from previous page Chaplain Amber Jackson presented the training segment of the program. Her text came from 2 Samuel 4 (the story of Mephibosheth), and she elaborated on the role of chaplains at the 2024 Connectional Youth and Young Adult Conference.

This Conference represented the first time that chaplains were used at a connectional meeting.

Chaplains traveled at their own expense and volunteered to work 12-hour shifts and rotational on-call duty. In preparation, they took special classes aimed at better equipping chaplains to handle issues unique to youth, young adults, and pastors who were suffering from post-traumatic church syndrome; identified safe spaces within the conference grounds; and the nearest hospitals and urgent care centers.

The service of the chaplains was crucial to the welfare and well-being of those in attendance.

Bishop Brown commended the work of the chaplains at the conference in Greensboro and the work of the Commission and the chaplains, as well as the dynamic leadership of Bishop Snorton.

Bishop Walker stated that he had been challenged to attend the breakfast and likened the importance of the chaplains to a skeleton crew whose job it is to keep the lights on, and Chaplains keep the lights on emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically in the lives of the people they serve.

CME Chaplains walk, step and move a little differently but make no mistake, they are all ministers in service to God and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

On Thursday, September 5th, 2024, The Presiding Elder’s Council of the Christian Methodist Episcopal church led the Centering Moments Morning Service.

Presiding Elder Orenthia D. Mason was the worship leader. She reminded the attendees that it is time to make good trouble!

The Morning Meditation was given by Presiding Elder Faye Houston from the 7th Episcopal District.

Presiding Elder Houston used Philippians 2:3-4 for her scripture text. The topic of her message was - Putting Love On the Line.

In her message, Rev. Houston reminded the attendees that we are called to make good trouble by: 1. Remembering that we are called to serve others; 2. Looking for ways to put love on the line; and 3. Have a willingness to look beyond ourselves and be willing to get in good trouble.

Rev. Faye Houston reminded us of how Jesus was willing to put love - his love on the line for us, and that we must be willing to do the same.

Rev. Houston reminded us of John Lewis, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other civil rights leaders that were willing to put their love on the line by serving and loving others.

This was a great message by Presiding Elder Houston and the message inspired us all to PUT LOVE ON THE LINE!

General Secretary of the Department of Connectional Lay Ministry, Mr. Shannon Faulk, facilitated a rapid-fire overview and discussion of the work of the Connectional Lay Department. He surveyed both the work and the importance of Lay Councils on the local level. Secretary Faulk emphasized his office’s efforts to support and equip the laity with resources. He provided strong foundational teaching on the purpose, role, and business of the laity within the church. Mr. Faulk made it clear that the efforts of the laity are necessary to carry the Church forward and emphasized the importance of reaching out to his office for assistance.

The following church offices fall under the Lay Department: Stewardess Stewards Trustees Ushers.

The Lay Theme is: Bold Faith, Christian Lay, Moving Forward Together! Acts 4:13-21 The Mission is: “Reaching, Teaching, and Ministering to All Generations, Equipping Them for Greater Works and Service for Him.” The consistent message of the session was how best to adapt the church to meet the current needs of the community.

Additionally, the meeting became a strategy session on how the laity can engage in the necessary work with many case examples supplied from attendees. The interactive presentation covered a wide array of initiatives happening at local churches. Here is a sampling of ideas discussed: o o o o

The session attendees expressed high interest to resume in-person Lay Institute meetings. Members expressed the “need for connection with others” and that “even if expensive, people will come if the meetings are something worthwhile.”

Additionally, there was expression for a census to properly assess the current state of the church. These and other ideas echo the great initiatives that are surfacing from the lay organization.

Secretary Faulk underscored the priority of strengthening the local lay organization by proclaiming, “Someone invested in us, that is why we are here. At this point, what are we investing in? ... We have to invest in families … We must make sure that our voice is heard.”

Thursday convened with morning meditation from Presiding Elder Rev. Faye R. Houston. Elder Houston preached a challenging and reflective message titled “Putting Love on the Line” taken from the scriptural text found in Philippians 2:4. Elder Houston mandates us to be intentional about the interest of and service to others. She challenged us to reflect on looking beyond ourselves and our comfortable lifestyles and live according to God’s Word. Elder Williams reminded us that we can’t get in “good trouble” if we believe the world revolves around us. We were encouraged to not put the pencil of love down but continue to be a blessing in our communities regardless of who shows up. Her final charge was for us to get in good trouble and keep putting love on the line. The Connectional Music and Arts Ministry led us in praise with “I Need You to Survive.”

During the Presiding Elder’s Council meeting, facilitated by the executive board, the presiding elders were encouraged to ensure their respective districts were voting and exercising their civic duty, reminding us that if we don’t vote, they don’t listen. Dr. D’Henri Thurman presented on behalf of the Conference of National Black Churches and discussed voting disparities and the need to contact the elections office to ensure members are registered to vote, as lists are being purged and voter suppression is prevalent. The meeting was also marked by the strong support and appreciation shown by several episcopal 14

leaders. Senior Bishop Reddick shared his respect for presiding elders, Bishop Heath shared the importance of personal accountability and the influence presiding elders’ lifestyles have on the lives of others. Bishop Modest shared her appreciation for the presiding elder’s commitment to serve.

Bishop Teresa Snorton provided an overview of her ministry and its impact on our churches: Bold Money Matters, Re-Imagining Children’s Ministry, Faithful Parenting, and Compelling Preaching, funded by grants from her outstanding work and diligence toward providing resources for the church to engage in essential ministry. Presiding elders were encouraged to share the information with their respective districts, reinforcing that churches utilize resources, talents, and spaces to do ministry while becoming agents of God’s presence among the hungry and needy in their communities.

Presiding Elder Rev. Freddrick Braddock, Vice President, summarized case scenarios during the in-service training. Presiding elders problem-solved collectively utilizing the Book of Discipline, the Bible, and wisdom to discuss resolutions to various scenarios troubling congregations and leaders.

Rev. Reginald Barnes, General Secretary of the Department of Personnel Services, discussed the pension program and, following a scrumptious meal, special guests from Prudential shared insight on [an emerging] financial plan. Presiding Elder

Thursday, September 5 to the cross, the four churches – representing the churches in the Presiding Elder’s districts and four quarterly conferences, the color French Blue – the universal color for all presiding elders, and the circle – representing the world, which is God’s vineyard.

The Presiding Elder’s Council Mission Statement is: “We are the Pin within the Hinge that connects the Local Church to the Connectional Church.”

“The CME Church Making Good Trouble”

A Presentation by CME Scholar Reverend Shea Thompson Submitted by Re. Dr. Lydia Spragin

The title of Rev. Thompson’s presentation was “It Is Time to Make Good Trouble.” In summary, Rev. Thompson gave us an overview of John Lewis’s background, the author of the quote from which the resounding theme of “Facing Now: Making Good Trouble” was adopted. Then, he went on to discuss three social justice issues plaguing the church and ways to make good trouble to alleviate and promulgate their solutions.

Introduction. John Lewis was born the son of a sharecropper in Troy, Alabama. At the tender age of 15, Lewis was inspired by the arrest of Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s first national address as President of the Montgomery Improvement Association on December 5, 1955. Throughout the 1960s, Lewis participated in student sit-ins while attending Fisk University, actively engaged in Freedom Rides, chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), organized a March on Washington, marched on “Bloody Sunday,” then marched in a second march, which led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He served as a member of the Atlanta City Council and in Congress, representing Georgia’s 5th district, which includes Atlanta. John Lewis was arrested more than 40 times for the cause of justice. John Lewis died in 2020, but his legacy lives on and is encapsulated by his renowned quote, “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.”

The Body. The gauntlet has been dropped, and the challenge has been issued to those gathered at the Unity Summit. How can we, as the CME Church, claim to preach the liberating gospel of Jesus Christ but do not do the liberating work for our society? In Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited, he writes: “The masses live with their backs constantly against the wall. They are the poor, the disinherited, the dispossessed. What does our religion say to them?” This is not a new idea. God relies on the prophets Isaiah (1:17), Zechariah (7:9-10), Jeremiah (22:3), Micah (6:8), and Amos – “Let justice roll down like water and righteous like a mighty stream” (Amos 5:24) – to cause good trouble for the cause of justice!

The CME Church must make good trouble OUTSIDE the church. We must be the church that God calls us to be, not a “social club that opens at 10 am, which is entertaining and ineffective.” The church must respond to three critical areas of social injustices we face: (1) EDUCATION. We must intentionally and purposely teach our children the truth about our CME, church, and cultural history. Teach Bishop Henry McNeal Turner, who declared in 1895, “God is a Negro.” (2) POVERTY. Continued from previous page the poverty rate is at 18%? Jesus, born in the hood of Nazareth, understood poverty and chose to liberate them. As the church, we must love people, as Jesus loved them enough to leave our buildings and liberate them. (3) GENOCIDE. On American soil, police brutality, and internationally in Gaza, Congo, and Sudan, genocide must be addressed. “In 2024, according to statistics, we have lost over 710 people to police violence; for those who were black, that number is 154. The sad truth is that we live in a country that spends more money on policing than it does on funding education.

When one realizes that the Israel of the Bible is not today’s Israel, then one will question the allegiance of the US to this Israel. How can it be that we who claim to love Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, side with the oppressor?

The CME Church must make good trouble inside the church. In philosophy, there is a word called Ontology. Ontology is a metaphysical study of being. Since it is the study of being, it constantly wrestles with being vs. nonbeing and existence vs. nonexistence. Why does this apply to us making good trouble inside the church?

Since we changed our name in 1954, we have been struggling ontologically. We are so busy trying to be something we can’t even define. “How can we re-claim our ontological identification? The answer is simple: the black church must become black again. How can we, as the black church, become black again? The first part is simple: white Jesus has got to go! … However, not only does white Jesus have to go, but so does anti-blackness.”

“If the black church is going to become black again, we must fully embrace our identity, celebrate our heritage, and be proud of our culture.” The Bible says, “I am Black and Beautiful” (Song of Solomon 1:5). Finally, to make the Black Church black again, it needs to return to being the epicenter of the community.

THE CHALLENGE: The people of the CME Church must make good trouble everywhere they go. “Why? Because the ministry of Jesus Christ is a prime example of how to make good trouble. Make good trouble in your communities, make good trouble in the school system, make good trouble in your churches, and make good trouble in the streets.”

In closing, Rev. Thompson said, “In the words of Michelle Obama, ‘Do Something.’”

MSWWD “CHAT AND CHEW WORKSHOP” Submitted by Mrs. Deborah G. Harris The Ministers’ Spouses, Widows, and Widowers Department convened the “Chat and Chew Workshop” on Thursday morning at the Annual Unity Summit. All attendees enjoyed a continental breakfast while dressed mirroring the western theme: beautiful cowboy hats, boots, fringed jackets, and blue jean attire. The atmosphere was festive and full of moments of friendship and sharing.

Members were encouraged to use index cards to record any questions that would be addressed during the workshop.

TAKING THE 2024 GENERAL ELECTIONS SERIOUSLY

“If We Don’t Organize, Mobilize, and Educate Our People, They Will Be Left Behind” As we approach the 2024 General Election, the Black church stands at a pivotal moment in history. With rising social, economic, and racial concerns, faith leaders play a critical role, not only in ensuring that their congregations are aware of the issues, but also in preparing them to take strategic action. During the CME Unity Summit on September 5, 2024, Bishop Charley Hames, Jr., leader of the Commission on Social Justice and Human Concerns, hosted a vital panel discussion titled, “Taking the 2024 General Elections Seriously.” The panel featured influential pastors from across the connection – Rev. Amariah McIntosh, Rev. Pamela Bell, Rev. Reginald Walton, Rev. Richard Shaw, and Rev. Kalif Crutcher – who passionately addressed the critical social justice issues affecting Black and Brown communities, including systemic racism, economic inequality, voter suppression, police brutality, and labor rights.

These issues disproportionately impact people in communities that require collective efforts from the church to address and eradicate. There were several questions raised for the panelists to answer. One of the questions that stood out was a question posed

by Bishop Hames: “How can voters hold candidates accountable for their commitment to social justice?”

“All politics is local,” Rev. McIntosh reminded the audience. “The president does not choose the police chief, the sheriff—that’s the local community’s responsibility. The closer the politics is to you, the more it impacts you. The president doesn’t affect our lives as directly as the mayor, school board, city council, or commission does. We must do a better job holding local officials accountable for the policies that impact our lives.” The panelists’ responses were sobering, and they all seemed to agree that the 18

movement for justice has always been intertwined with political power. With this understanding, the Black church must rise to the challenge by organizing spaces for open dialogue where congregants and community members can learn about the key issues and ask questions, mobilizing people to participate in the election, and educating the community about how the electoral process can bring about systemic change.

Bishop Hames emphasized the critical distinction between equality and equity. He explained, “Equality means treating everyone the same, providing identical resources or opportunities to all, while equity recognizes the different needs and challenges individuals face and focuses on offering tailored resources to ensure fair outcomes.” In other words, achieving true justice and fairness for marginalized communities facing systemic barriers requires moving beyond equality and making equity a priority.

This means the Black church must be willing to help fight for the unique needs of these communities, such as closing the generational wealth gap, increasing homeownership for African Americans, and providing more funding for Black-owned businesses. The panel further stressed that faith and unity can create transformative change through the electoral process.

The outcome of the 2024 general election will have profound and lasting implications for criminal justice reform, healthcare, economic justice, and racial equity.

The Black church must not only pray but act. It is our responsibility to organize, mobilize, and educate, so that our people will not be left behind in this crucial election. The stakes of the 2024 General Election extend far beyond today—they will determine whether our values are upheld, and our communities are protected for generations to come.

Christian Education and Formation: “Formation of a People to Vote” Submitted by Mrs. Andrea Couch Dr. Carmichael Crutchfield, General Secretary of Department of Christian Education and Formation, facilitated a workshop titled, “Formation of A People to Vote.” The workshop was opened with a prayer provided by Dr. Crutchfield. Following prayer, each attendee was given the opportunity to stand and introduce themselves.

Dr. Crutchfield started the workshop by stating, “Voting brings about justice.” He defined a contract as an agreement to do something in a certain time frame. The attendees learned that leadership is not something that you are born with but formed. There is a big gap in leadership, and it is hard to find leadership. Some people have several jobs within the church.

One of the themes that runs throughout the Bible is justice. When justice does not take place, it’s because the wrong people are in leadership.

Deuteronomy 10:17-18 teaches us, “Jehovah your God is God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great and mighty God, the God of terror who shows no partiality and takes no bribes. 18 He gives justice to the fatherless and widows. He loves foreigners and gives them food and clothing.” This is the nature of God. Why would you elect someone that will oppress people?

Why did God give the Ten Commandments? God gave the Ten Commandments for order, moral basis of justice, and having a relationship with God and your neighbor. God wants us to love him and our neighbor. God is the basis for equity in the Old Testament.

Why do we need to touch the lives of children?

People might come into a relationship with Jesus Christ. People are getting baptized 2 – 3 times due to bad leadership. Salvation is not complete because you got water on you or because you say you are saved; you have to die to self. Work begins when you walk down the aisle. Because of the emotional response, we don’t do anything to help them. They come on one Sunday and don’t come

back. The most valuable thing we have is time. We must take time to teach and nurture. Intentionality is what it takes to make it happen.

Before a meeting, spend that first few minutes learning something. Set the atmosphere with God. Luke 11:42 teaches us, “But woe to you Pharisees!

For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” God expects God’s people to pursue justice on earth.

God calls us to live a just life. With the faith that we have, try to do the following each Sunday: (1) Gain cognitive knowledge, (2) Be effective, touch the heart, and (3) Put it into action. “We have beautiful lessons, but they stay in our heads and do not touch our hearts. Once it touches our heart, action takes place.” Christian Education is the most powerful influence a congregation has to renew congregational life.

To mature in faith, we must: (1) Make service and social justice integral to Christian education and (2) Promote family religiousness. Factors of effective Christian Education are: (1) Teachers who have mature faith and who know educational theories and methods, (2) A pastor who is committed to education, (3) An education process that applies faith to current issues (family, life, experiences), (4) Having the ability to blend biblical knowledge/ insight with different age groups, and (5) Have an educational program with a clear mission.

To increase faith maturity and congregational growth: (1) Make sure you have a formal Christian education program, and (2) Invite people into the church to talk about an issue and encourage questions and challenges with expectancy to learn.

For effective worship, all attendees have to know what worship is. Psalms 40:16 states, “Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually, ‘The LORD be magnified!’” The focus is not on us, but on God. September 2024 • GCB and Unity Summit

The Commission on Concerns of Women in the Ministry under the leadership of our Connectional Coordinator, Rev. Lisa Lewis Balboa, came together in a sacred space for a time of reflection, fellowship, worship, and discussion.

The women in attendance received far more than anticipated.

We were embraced with the presence of Bishop Teresa Snorton, who is chair of the Commission on Concerns of Women in the Ministry and the first elected and consecrated female bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop Snorton greeted us and imparted wisdom into us. Following Bishop Snorton was Bishop Denise Anders-Modest, who is the immediate past coordinator of the commission and now holds the title of being the second elected and consecrated female bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. She, too, imparted wisdom into the women as she reminded us not to line ourselves up with every other woman. The women were constantly reminded to be their authentic selves.

Have you ever been rejected or felt rejected as a woman in ministry, was the first question during the panel discussion coordinated by Presiding Elder Lavisha Williams. The panel consisted of: Rev. Dr. Amanda Goodson of the Ninth Episcopal District, Rev. Anita Williams of the Fifth Episcopal District, and Rev. Cheryl Goliday of the Fourth Episcopal District. Each panelist shared personal experiences of rejection as women based on their gender.

Following the panel discussions, the women were greeted by Rev. Dr. Essie Clark-George, Rev. Jane E. Thomas, and Rev. Nellie Williams, who holds the title of the first female pastor of the Sixth Episcopal District. All three poured into those in attendance; they left the women inspired, encouraged, and ready to make good trouble.

any given second. Indeed, God shifted the atmosphere.

Finally, after hearing from women who have experienced trials and triumphs of being a woman in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Cathy Jones stood tall and mighty, as she proclaimed the uncompromising word of God. Her printed text came from Luke 4:22 and her subject was, “Yeah, it’s me!” My God! This message stirred the souls and hearts of all in attendance.

She reminded the women that when chosen by God, opposition will come up. During opposition, never forget who called you. She further reminded the women that sometimes we are haunted by past experiences or circumstances. Past experiences do not dictate the future God has planned for one’s life.

After Dr. Jones’ powerful and anointed message, women were on fire as praises to God rang throughout the room. Yes, that message stirred up something in the atmosphere and in the heart of every hearer of the word. “Yeah, It’s Me.” After a message like that, who would not be ready to go back home and make good trouble?

Missionary Workshop: “Facing Now: Making Good Trouble” Submitted by Dr. Rita Washington

The Women’s Missionary Council conducted its workshop Thursday afternoon. It was entitled, “Facing Now: Making Good Trouble.” Three presentations were given. One was by Mrs. Sue Alexander, Council Secretary of Hunger and Meals.

Mrs. Alexander quoted Ethel Percy Andrus: “The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.” She told us that missionaries around the CME Connection are an essential ingredient to others, both in America and abroad. They take the purpose of Hunger and Meals seriously and act accordingly. This commitment to sacrificial giving and sharing enables us to engage in feeding ministries and resources to alleviate hunger in areas such as Africa, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Missionaries are “Making Good Trouble” through actively engaging in ministries which are impactful in the lives of people suffering from acute malnutrition, hunger insecurity, and chronic hunger. Mrs. Alexander provided statistics about people who suffer from poverty and hunger and food insecurity and offered projects that we can do to help our brothers and sisters in Jamaica, Haiti, and the 10th and 11th Episcopal Districts.

Mrs. Hilda Buie, Secretary of Overseas Missions, began by telling us that to make good trouble, we must continue to challenge injustice and fight for a more equitable society. We must disrupt systems of oppression and exploitation. The issues we are facing today include racial inequalities, voter suppression, police brutality, and economic disparities, and demand our attention and action. According to Mrs.

Buie, we must speak truth to power even when it is uncomfortable or risky. Mrs. Buie provided us with the “Formula for Making Good Trouble.” Step 1: Stand up for justice and what is right! Step 2: Make a commitment to serve God’s people with gladness!

Step 3: Be an Ambassador of Compassion! Care for the Children. Step 4: Prayerfully, leave every place better than you found it!

Miss Tiffanie R. Thompson and Miss Toya S.A. McQueen gave an informative presentation entitled: “Inspiring Innovation: Intentional Actions for Intergenerational Change,” aka “Facing Now: Making Good Trouble: 3 Ideas from the Young Adult Perspective on What We Should Be Incorporating in our Societies.” The first idea, Intentional Engagement, encompasses understanding needs and interests; targeted outreach; and creating a welcoming environment. The second idea societies should incorporate is Innovative Approaches, which includes embracing technology, using innovative strategy, and having relevant activities. The third idea is Intergenerational Engagement. Mentorship programs, collaborative projects, and feedback mechanisms are the kinds of activities young adults believe societies should incorporate.

The missionary workshop was a call to action for missionaries to make good trouble. The presenters gave practical tips, suggestions, ideas, and things missionaries can do as we boldly face new challenges as we serve a changing world.

On Thursday afternoon, September 5, the Connectional Steward and Stewardess Presidents, along with the General Secretary of Lay Ministries, Dr. Shannon Faulk, decided to split the workshop with each president speaking to their own group with Dr. Faulk shifting between the two. I decided to stay with the Stewardesses. Mrs. Jolinda Dugger, the Connectional President, along with Dr. Faulk, had a spirited dialogue with the Stewardesses on what “ignite” meant to them.

Mrs. Jolinda Dugger Under the guidance of Mrs. Dugger, the Stewardesses said that they believed that renewal was the key to igniting their flame. Mrs. Dugger challenged them to reimagine how they serve the respective tables outlined in the Book of Discipline, especially in how they serve the table of the poor. Mrs. Dugger said this means looking beyond just oversight of the benevolent offering and meeting the poor where they are by being willing to help and serve beyond the walls of the local church.

Dr. Faulk also encouraged the Stewardesses to consider how they recruit and attract newer and younger women to the work. Dr. Faulk said a key to attracting is to approach people with a positive attitude, and Mrs. Dugger added that they should be willing to explain to women why they do what they do (love for God, love for the church, love for service).

As technology continues to evolve, so do the opportunities for the Communication and Information Technology (CIT) Department to help CME churches enhance their ministries and outreach efforts. At the CME Unity Summit on Thursday, September 5, 2024, the CIT department provided a dynamic platform for church leaders and members to explore the latest digital trends, tools, and strategies to advance communication and engagement.

Dr. Theresa Duhart, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the CME Church’s CIT Department, led an insightful session titled, “Face Now and Embrace New Digital Resources for Local Churches,” highlighting how churches can utilize technology to serve their communities more effectively. The session was designed to accommodate all skill levels, from entry-level to advanced technology users. The session featured three key presentations.

I opened with a presentation titled, “Introduction to Canva,” where I guided attendees through the basics of creating visually appealing flyers and videos for church ministries using Canva, a user-friendly graphic design platform. This tool enables churches to produce professional and high-quality digital materials to help market their churches. Dr. Duhart followed with a captivating presentation on “AI in Ministry: Understanding and Using Artificial Intelligence.” She discussed how AI is transforming church ministry, offering new ways for leaders to engage and serve their congregations more efficiently. The final presentation, delivered virtually by Ms. Kathy Shoteil, Network Success Manager with Gloo, introduced the CME Church’s new partnership with Gloo, which provides free text messaging services to local congregations. This partnership equips churches with essential communication tools, ensuring that congregants stay informed about important church activities and community updates at a discounted rate. [Because of the broad range of topics and skill levels addressed in the session,] we ensured that all participants left with practical skills and information to enhance their church’s operations and technology use.

Bishop James B. Walker, Chair of the CIT Department, also attended the session and shared valuable insights on how CIT is positively impacting local churches and enhancing the overall effectiveness of church ministries.

He emphasized the importance of building community beyond church walls through social media and live streaming, sparking meaningful conversations about how churches are managing virtual memberships. The lively conversation highlighted the excitement attendees felt about using these resources to streamline operations and strengthen their ministries.

As the CME Church continues to embrace these digital tools, the future of ministry is poised to become more impactful. The CME Unity Summit 2024 demonstrated the power of CIT as an asset for churches, equipping them to serve their communities in innovative ways, allowing churches to better connect, unite, and share information with their congregations.

On September 5, 2024, at the 12th Annual Unity Summit the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church celebrated individuals from each Episcopal District for making good trouble in the communities were they live and serve.

The night began with the Unity Summit Choir singing, We Shall Overcome. The Connectional Young Adults participated in the program and put together a dynamic video footage to showcase the honorees. Young adults James Blackman and Chris Washington both served as the Master of Ceremonies.

Each Presiding Prelate recognized and presented the Episcopal Honoree with a Good Trouble Award. Honorees were as follows: 1st Episcopal District - Sis. Velma Lois Jones 2nd Episcopal District - Rev. Peris J. Lester, I 3rd Episcopal District - Rev. Dr. Richard Shaw 4th Episcopal District - Dr. Jessie Edwards 5th Episcopal District - Rev. Jacqueline Wilson 6th Episcopal District - Dr. Barbara Campbell 7th Episcopal District - Rev. William D. McCullough 8th Episcopal District - Mrs. Sue Alexander 9th Episcopal District - Rev. The Awards did not stop there! Retired United Methodist Bishop James Swanson presented Bishop Teresa E. Snorton with the United Theological Seminary Award for her ecumenical work and for being a graduate from United Theological Seminary.

Dr. Pene’ Woods and Dr. Theresa Duhart presented the Top Three Presiding Elders that had registered the most people from their Districts with awards. They also shared registration numbers for each Episcopal District. The 8th Episcopal District had the most with a total of 170 people registered!

Bishop Denise Anders Modest, Unity Summit Program Chairperson, thanked everyone for attending the Awards Gala, and she gave special thanks to Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas Sr. for suggesting this wonderful Awards Night, and Bishop Modest gave the closing prayer.

This night was enjoyed by all that attended. The work of the Awardees encouraged everyone to go out and make good trouble.

Your Voice, Your Vote: Empowering Faithful Citizenship A Workshop Offered by the Department of Lay Ministries Submitted by Rev. Jessie Manuel

In a world where voices often go unheard, the call to action for Christian laity to engage in the electoral process has never been more crucial. The theme, “Your Voice, Your Vote,” resonates deeply within our communities, reminding us that each of us holds a vital responsibility—not only as individuals but as members of the Church—to influence the societal landscape through informed and active participation in democracy.

The Christian tradition emphasizes the inherent dignity and worth of every person, a principle that underlines the significance of civic engagement. The Gospels teach us the importance of loving our neighbors and advocating for justice, mercy, and compassion. These core values compel us to make our voices heard in the public square, particularly when voting. Each election presents an opportunity to reflect our faith in action and to stand in solidarity with the marginalized and oppressed.

As laypersons, we are called to educate ourselves about the issues at stake in our communities and the broader world.

This involves not only understanding candidates and their platforms but also engaging with the ethical implications of various policies. Informed voting is critical; it is our duty to consider how our choices align with our faith and the moral teachings of the Church.

Moreover, the question of voter turnout is paramount. Statistics reveal that many eligible voters—especially young people—do not participate in elections, leading to a disconnect between those in power and the citizens they serve. The Christian laity is uniquely positioned to change this narrative. By encouraging one another to vote, sharing insights about the electoral process, and participating in discussions about civic responsibility, we can foster a culture of engagement within our congregations and communities.

The importance of advocacy cannot be overlooked. As we lift our voices in prayer, we must also raise them in advocacy for policies that reflect our values. Issues such as poverty, immigration, healthcare, education, and climate change are not just political talking points—they are deeply spiritual concerns. By actively engaging in these discussions and advocating for just policies, we live out our faith and bear witness to the love of Christ in action.

In this plenary session, we are reminded that our participation doesn’t end at the ballot box. Following elections, it is essential to hold elected officials accountable and to continue advocating for justice and righteousness. Our voices must not be silent once the votes are cast; instead, they should persist in calling for policies that embody the Gospel’s call to love and service.

To ensure that our voices are heard, we must also confront barriers to voting. Promoting access to the ballot for all people is essential, particularly for marginalized groups who often encounter systemic obstacles. As Christians, we must be advocates for equity in our electoral processes, inspiring others to join us in promoting a democracy where every voice matters.

“Your Voice, Your Vote” is not just a slogan; it is a call to action rooted in our Christian identity. As we engage with the electoral process, let us remember the power of our collective voice. Together, we can effect change that reflects our commitment to justice, mercy, and love. It is time for each of us to recognize our responsibility and privilege as citizens and to engage fully, for our voices—and our votes—truly matter. May we be guided by our faith as we step forward into this crucial responsibility, striving to build a future that honors God and serves all humanity.

The Send Off by Bishop Adjei Submitted by Editor Ore L. Spragin, Jr. Almost all the leaders of the worship were persons from the African continent, the exceptions being a few continental U.S. persons who are members of the Eleventh.

Mrs. Jacqueline Odhiambo and Mrs. Martha Maruru, Regional Vice President and President, respectively, of the Women’s Missionary Society in Kenya served as the worship leaders. The Call to Worship was given by U.S resident Rev. Claudia Harrison. Rev. Mercy Adjei and Justina Adjei, wife and daughter, respectively, Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei of Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei of the Eleventh Episcopal District served as congregational song leaders throughout the service. To their great credit and to the glory of God, the Connectional Music and Arts Ministry band and choir joined right in with the songs and style of our sisters and brothers from Africa. Most of the songs were of the African continent, but whether sung entirely in their native language or mixed with English, the CMAM gave accompaniment without missing a beat.

The prayer offered by Rev. Bonface Odhiambo (11th) recognized and thanked God for the diversity present in the room and for the uniting presence and power of the Holy Spirit. We were ushered into worship “in the African way” – standing and with much singing. The scripture, 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, was read by Rev. Mary McKinney (U.S. – English), Rev. Dr. Dieudonne Mugongo (11th – Swahili), and Rev. Dr. Koko Daniel (10th – Ibibio). Rev. Alfred Harrison (U.S.) introduced the preacher, Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei, 68th Elected Bishop of the CME Church and Presiding Prelate of the Eleventh Episcopal District.

Bishop Adjei spoke from the read text using as a sermon title, “Enlarging Our Territory.” He told us that though the name Jabez means causing sorrow and comes from the fact that he caused his mother great pain in childbirth, the text helps us to see that God is able to work with us in our challenges and to bring beautiful things out of our pain. The bishop said that Jabez could have become a bitter man and even resentful towards his parents, or he could have resigned himself to being a person of sorrow and disappointment because of his name, but he did not.

Bishop Adjei offered three things from the text. (1) Jabez cried out to the God of Israel to be blessed to be free from pain, and God granted his request. “His name did not change, but God changed his future.” Jabez maintained himself as an honorable man, doing good to others in his community and worshipping God purely, without mixing it with idolatry. As we desire and receive God’s blessings upon our church and members, we should use those blessings to make good struggles. (2) Jabez desired that God would expand his scope of influence. God will expand the scope of our influence if we look beyond the walls of the CME Church and beyond the continental U.S. As Bishop Adjei mentioned that our churches are among the 6,000 have been closed by the government of Rwanda he added, “We have to expand our territory by doing missions because it is the lifeblood of the church ... It is our mandate, and we should not lose focus in doing missions.” (3) Know that God will protect us. “When God’s favor is upon your life, then your enemies will also be on the increase.” Jabez prayed and God granted his request. “So shall it be with you.”

Rev. Mercy and Sis. Justina Adjei sang, “The Son of God Has Lifted Us,” and Honourable Philemon Bisengimana Buradi (11th) offered the closing prayer in French. Martha Maruru concluded, “We are one church.

We are CME,” after which we sang, danced, and greeted one another in the Spirit.

The closing worship service was both an act of praise and thanksgiving to God and a recognition and celebration of the international ministry and work of the CME Church, particularly in the Eleventh and Tenth Episcopal Districts.

Notes from The Sankofa Moment – Looking Backward: Bishop Othal H Lakey, Retired; Looking Forward: Dr. Jermaine Marshall Submitted by Rev. Dr. Lydia Spragin Bishop Othal Hawthorne Lakey applied the Sankofa Approach to the life and witness of who we are and what we are as a church of Jesus Christ molded on the anvil of the Black experience. The appropriate biblical analogy for this Sankofa moment, he said, is 1 Samuel 7:12, which reads in the KJV: “Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Jeshanah (in some versions Shen), and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.” Bishop Lakey commented, “Samuel’s Ebenezer means that we may not know about the future, but one thing we know for sure is ‘Hitherto, the LORD has been our help.’ So, the Sankofa topic comes from that historical and biblical paradigm: “The Hitherto of Christian Methodism.”

Bishop Lakey masterfully interwove the strands of CME Church History with an informative PowerPoint presentation that poignantly engaged those in attendance.

Topics discussed were diverse and ranged from the inception of the CME Church to its concentration on and commitment to educating a race. Of interest were the facts presented about the restrictions and contributions of women to the maturation of the CME Church.

In 1619, twenty slaves were brought to America.

That number increased to four million at the beginning of the Civil War. Now, of these 4 million, 447,000 were members of protestant churches. Most of them were slaves who were located in the plantations of the South and were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. When freed in 1865, as a consequence of the Civil War, most of the freed persons left the church for a variety of reasons. But the historical question of why so many left is “eclipsed by the ecclesiastical question of why did 78,000 remain.”

Bishop Lakey observed that these remained because they had familial attachments to their white former slave masters, and because they felt that the white church of which they had been faithful members owed to them the establishment of their own church. The leadership of the majority white agreed in sentiment, but while the white church had its own ideas regarding what that meant and how it would occur, these “colored”

members had their own notions and eventually demanded and received the legal development and establishment of their own church through the 1866 General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

On December 16, 1870, they gathered in Jackson, Tennessee, to fulfill their wishes. Fifty years later, that newly organized, experimental church was described as “God’s tender plant.” Bishop Lakey concluded, “To me, that tender plant symbolizes that Sankofa bird and the “hitherto” of Christian Methodism.

What they established ties the CME Church with American Methodism back to John Wesley, and then they adopted The Articles of Religion as their doctrine.

They adopted the Methodist polity as their own. They elected their own bishops – William Henry Miles and Richard H. Vanderhorst, duly consecrated by Senior Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Thus, they were the first black bishops elected and consecrated in American Methodism in unbroken succession to John Wesley … They put in place the ‘Methodist Way’ to be Christian ... What they did and what we did is amazing! One year later, that 78,000 had grown to more than 148,000, and in 2024, here in Dallas, Texas, we are reporting several hundred thousand members worldwide.”

The expanse of each topic noted within his lecture encourages each of us to become more familiar with our CME roots so that we can continue the legacy of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. When the history of the CME is studied seriously, we discover unsung heroes and sheroes and uncover a treasure trove that informs us of our past, ignites our present, and inspires our future.

Dr. Jermaine Marshall quoted 2 Kings 7:15 and titled his address “Not Fit to Live, And Not Ready to Die.” He began by presenting the provocative argument that “the Black church is dead.” The idea that the Black church is essential to Black life and a repository for the social and moral conscience of the

We are challenged with declining memberships, declining church attendance, post-covid financial hardships, and dilapidated church properties (often, without adequate resources to renovate them, atrocious contracts are being accepted), which caused some of our congregations to endure the trauma of being homeless without a place of worship. Millennials and Gen-Zers view the church as hypocritical and find alternative forms of spirituality much more to their liking. Even as a Black community with the disparity of health challenges we face, the question that rises to mind is “are we fit to live.”

In 2 Kings 7, God does the unthinkable and the unimaginable. God uses the actions of some lepers to confirm Elijah’s prophecy to the king. Lepers were not socially acceptable in the city and had to live in camps outside the city. Dr. Marshall stated, “Likewise, when white supremacists see persons of color, no matter what our socioeconomic status, educational background, or achievements, they see lepers.”

Marshall declares that we must get into good trouble and vote. Referring to his own book, Christianity Corrupted: The Scandal of White Supremacy, he demonstrated that faith and democracy in America are in crisis because white American Christian evangelical tradition is rooted in white Christian supremacy and motivated by white Christian nationalism.

The text of 2 Kings 7 helps us understand why we need to vote and how we should vote. First, we need to vote reasonably. If we scrutinize the text closely, we discover what Marshall called “the divine anointing of human agency.” Human agency is a part of what is termed divine sovereignty, the idea that God has the authority, power, and wisdom to control all things, including our human actions. The lepers had the ability to make a decision, they made the right decision, and God was seen to have worked through the decision they made.

In essence, God works through us, especially in our voting. Most of the time, God intervenes and saves us from our vices. But if we take God’s salvation for granted, it will lead to our peril. Plenty of mistakes were made in the 2016 election, but hopefully, we have learned from our mistakes. If we forget where the 28

Friday, September 6 LORD has brought us from, we will make the wrong choice in this election. If we are honest with ourselves, there is no question about the right choice in this upcoming election. Whatever we do, we have to vote reasonably. Voting reasonably will cause us to make the right choice. The question is, will we do it?

Not only should we vote reasonably, but we must also vote responsibly. In the text, when the lepers got to the camp, they had a substantial bounty to eat.

Once their stomachs were full, the lepers appealed to their social consciousness and began to share with others about food and resources that the Syrians had left, epitomizing what we, as Methodists, understand and practice as “social holiness.” John Wesley’s understanding of social holiness is scriptural in that it means “loving God with all of your heart, mind, and soul and loving your neighbor as yourself.”

In our CME Discipline, we see social holiness best defined in our social creed, which advocates for economic stability, adequate medical care for our elderly, the eradication of poverty, and for human rights. Voting responsibly means voting to achieve what Martin Luther King, Jr. called the beloved community: citizenship in the heavenly community and quality of life for citizens in the earthly kingdom, assuring salvation from poverty, hunger, and hopelessness, whereby all citizens benefit from the earth’s wealth, as well as salvation from racism, bigotry, prejudice, discrimination, and all forms of oppression. Arguing from books written by Raphael G. Warnock, Bishop Joseph Johnson, and Theron D. Williams that the Black church participates in its own oppression when it accepts the double consciousness and ignorance of white evangelical theology, Jermaine Marshall affirmed that if we vote responsibly, we will not become complicit in our own oppression, and we will defeat the intended oppression.

We have got to vote reasonably and responsibly, and we have got to vote righteously. Voting righteously is an act of holiness and an act of sanctification. Therefore, voting righteously requires repentance, because not voting righteously is sinful. As one example, Marshall cited the fact that Ronald Reagan demanded that Mikhail Gorbachev “tear down that wall” while at the same time supporting apartheid in South Africa. We have to ask ourselves the question framed by Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr., in his acceptance speech as Chair of the College of Bishops: “Are you on the side of life or the side of death?” Hitherto, the Lord has brought you through. But if you want a future, if you want to live, you better vote and you better vote righteously.
