Rambling Thoughts: “Making It on Broken Pieces” Saturday, June 23, 2018 9:00 A.M. Pastor Lisa Lewis-Balboa Second Episcopal District

Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr., Presiding Bishop of the Second Episcopal District, was the preacher for the Holy Communion Service. His message was from Acts 27:43-44. The subject of his sermon was “Making it on Broken Pieces”. Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr. invited us to take a ride with Paul and to learn about Paul’s work as a missionary. Bishop Thomas reminded us that Acts 27 teaches us that Paul’s journey was not an easy sail, but that Paul was called to calm the people in the time of a storm. In his message, Bishop Thomas stated that sometimes storms “come through no fault of our own, and that there will be shipwrecks. When shipwrecks come, we can make it on broken pieces.” Bishop Thomas gave examples of some of the political storms that we are faced with today. These storms include the mistreatment of innocent children, prisons that are filled with African American males, and problems in our schools. Bishop Thomas challenged the church to be a prophetic voice in times like these. “The church must have a word for those wondering how to make it during the brokenness of life.” Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr. shared points on how to make it on broken pieces— (1) We must own up to our brokenness, (2) We must stop denying our brokenness, and (3) We must exercise our options. Bishop Thomas reminded the congregation, “The

Church can’t continue to do JCPenny Ministry in an Amazon.com World.” Bishop Thomas stated, “Now is not the time to stand still. It is a blessing to make it in on broken pieces,” adding that, “Each of us came to Birmingham with our own brokenness.” He closed the message by reminding the congregation that we should thank God that we made it! We are still here, and that with God — we can make it on broken pieces! Birmingham City Councilor and fellow CME, Rev. Steven W. Hoyt, gave greetings to the General Conference Assembly as the communion service got underway. Hoyt, who is serving his fifth term as Councilor for District 8, is also Chair of the Planning and Zoning Committee for the city and is a member of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts and Public Safety Committees.
