Editorial

Migration and the Church The 2024 World Methodist Conference was held August 13-18 in Gothenburg, Sweden, its major program being titled On the Move. This program was developed through three themes: Migration, Pilgrimage, and Guiding Lights. I want to share some highlights and thoughts concerning the first theme, Migration.

Each day was successively devoted to one of the themes, and a panel was formed for each theme.

The panel on migration was "interviewed" by Bishop Rosemarie Wenner and consisted of four persons from different parts of the world who have been affected by migration. Throughout the discussion and in the sessions that followed, it was made clear that the idea of migration as a voluntary movement of an individual or a people group from one area, location, or country to another is a greatly narrowed point of view that is the result of many factors, including social influences and educational biases.

Migration includes voluntary or selected emigration and immigration, as well as migrations that are forced upon individuals or groups as results of war, lack of economic opportunity, political and racial oppression, physical and other kinds of abuse, and famine, just to name a few. But in each of these the foundational statement by Rev. Felipe E. Rojas Cortés, a member of the panel, kept ringing in my head. He said, "If migration is a right, inclusion is a must." And yes, he based his presentation on the thesis that migration is a right belonging to all people because it acknowledges the human dignity of all individuals and their right to self-determination.

In a subsequent related breakout session, In Search of Belonging, Rev. Dr. Martin Mujinga said that migration raises the questions, "How do I belong where I do not belong? What is important, the process, and the opportunities?" It also means for the native, the one who already belongs, the question is, "How do I help

the stranger belong?" There must be focus, or refocus, on similarities rather than differences. He added, "A person is a person because of people."

Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., We have to make Editor opportunities to dialogue or interact. Some questions that will facilitate this for both the one who belongs and the one who is a stranger are: (1) How can you belong here?

(2) How can I belong here? and (3) How can I help you belong here? We must hear what they have to say, as well as tell (share) who we are.

To approach inclusion as a matter of fitting in puts the weight of responsibility on the migrant. If you don't fit, it will be difficult to belong. Belonging puts the weight of work on the receiving body. In either case, and for both parties involved, there must be a desire for inclusion.

Do migrant communities (people) expect receiving communities to make all the changes because they have arrived? Are we ready to change? Both fitting and belonging require a loss of self to some degree. Can you approach the other? Can you accept the other? Belonging necessitates acceptance and invitation into space.

What is the role of the church in extending hospitality to people on the move, inclusive of changing local neighborhoods to changing countries? We can accept without stipulation. We can accept without looking on the exterior or external presentation. We can try to educate ourselves (be educated, learn, be taught) about those who are migrating. We must acquiesce to become learners and powerless. There must be a mind and a cultural shift.

Those who would host must become listeners also. We must want to see them.

General Connectional Board members are requested to reserve the dates of September 2nd-3rd for the General Connectional Board meeting, and to expect a call for the Standing Committees and other committee meetings from the respective Chairs of each Standing Committee or the Senior Bishop for other committees.

While we anticipate a full day (morning, afternoon, evening) schedule for the first day, we anticipate a morning to early afternoon (about 3:00 - 4:00 adjournment) for the morning and afternoon of the second day, but we will adjourn after all business is completed.

BISHOP DEDICATES NEW CHURCH BUILDING

July 19th, 2024, Bishop Adjei and his entourage were invited by the Pastor in charge (Rev. Bertha Gastor) of Mulela CME Church in the Kigoma District of Tanzania to dedicate their new church building. Indeed, Bishop offered his unwavering assistance when the request was made for a church building by the pastor last year. By dint of hard work, the Pastor and her congregation have utilized the funds to raise a church building to lentil level.

Bishop was prevailed upon to dedicate the building though uncompleted for worship to begin. The Presiding Prelate was informed that $2,000.00 will be needed to complete the building. Bishop Adjei immediately resolved to give $500.00 for roofing sheets. In addition, he promised to provide them with 50 plastic chairs as virtually they have to sit on the floor for worship. It is gratifying to note that CME visibility will be seen at this rural community as they will now have their own place of worship. Thank you, 1st Lady Mercy, for always standing by my side to do the Father’s will in ministry. To God be the glory.

CYYAM QUADRENNIAL MEETING HELD IN GREENSBORO, NC The 2024 Connectional Youth & Young Adult Conference ended on July 5th in Greensboro, NC with a closing worship service. The Preacher was the Presiding Prelate of the 2nd Episcopal District, Bishop Denise Anders-Modest, who is also the Patron Bishop of the General Department of

Christian Education. Speaking on the theme, “Now What,” she challenged the young people to reflect on events of the conference as they depart in order to go and serve well in their local churches. The Eleventh Episcopal District was represented by the Presiding Prelate, Bishop Adjei, and Miss Justina Adjei.

The CME Church and for that matter, the 11th Episcopal District, congratulates Miss Jamea Grace on her election as the new President of the Connectional Youth & Young Adult Ministry (CYYAM) 2024-2028 of the worldwide Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Congratulations to Miss Justina L. Adjei on her election to the Vice President’s Council which is the governing body of CYYAM.

Continued from previous page of the CME Church opened the Tanzania Region Annual Conference in Kigoma after a short devotion. Delegates were drawn from churches across the Country. Bishop in his opening statement welcomed the delegates and tried to explain the proceedings of the annual conference. 1st Lady Mercy Adjei preached the ordination sermon on the theme, “My Calling, I Will Fulfill,” from 1 Peter 4:1-5. She urged both ordinands and delegates to remain faithful to their Calling. Seven were ordained to the order of Deacon and one ordained to the order of Elder. Gifts were presented to Bishop and 1st Lady. Bishop’s decorated gift with a knife symbolises a warrior in Christ Jesus. Rev. Dr. Nzoza was given an award from Phillips School of Theology as most outstanding Pastor of the 11th Episcopal District, a 2024 Book of Discipline, and Rtd. Bishop Gilmore's Book of Catechism & books of ritual. Bishop presented seed fund of $500.00 to the Women’s Missionary Council for Women’s empowerment.

Bishop Adjei ordains qualified persons recommended to the order of Deacon in Tanzania.

WORLD METHODIST COUNCIL/CONFERENCE HELD IN SWEDEN The 22nd World Methodist Conference was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from August 12th – 18th, 2024.

The theme for the conference was “On The Move.” It was attended by an association of 80 member churches from one single family tree of John & Charles Wesley 6

from six continents around the world. The attendees of the conference include Bishops, Clergy, Lay, Women and Youth Leaders of the various Methodist denominations across the globe. CME Bishops in attendance were Bishop Sylvester Williams, Bishop Teresa Snorton, Bishop Marvin Thomas, Bishop James B. Walker, Bishop Clarence K. Heath, Bishop Charley Hames, Bishop Dennis AndersModest, Bishop Ricky D. Helton and Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei. The 11th Episcopal District was represented by the Presiding Prelate, Bishop Adjei and Rev. Dr. William Daudi Nzoza from Tanzania.

The World Methodist Council on August 13th met to elect new officers for the next quinquennium. The devotional sermon before the Council’s meeting was delivered by Rev. Prof. Jerry Pilley, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches. The conference duly opened in the evening of August 13th with a worship service. The keynote speaker was Rev. Dr. Audrey Warren of United Methodist Church in Miami. The incumbent General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Ivan Abraham’s tenure of office has ended and is succeeded by Rev. Dr. Reynolds F. LeaoNeto from Brazil. Dr. Nellie Wallace becomes the new Chairperson of the Council.

Outstanding officers of the Council were honored with the Order of Jerusalem. Outgoing General Secretary Rev. Ivan Abraham was appreciated with $10,000.00 from the Council.

Indeed, it was a great gathering from six continents, comprising the association of 80 member churches of Methodist denominations across the globe.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New The Scriptures Isaiah 43:18-19 says, "Do not remember the former things, nor

consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

THE PRACTICE

Seeing New requires an open mind and a willing spirit. Have we been guilty of believing we See New with cloudy lenses? Or is it possible that we See New with no action. Whatever the case may be, foresight, insight, or hindsight, the action of one Seeing New is a continuous sight of what the possibility and future outcomes for ministry in the local Church can be. I suggest that we not only see but continue seeing with clarity of heart, thought, and mind. The episcopal address (pg. 4) given by Bishop Snorton raises this question: “Have we become barren and thirsty in the desert by putting our trust in a mirage, of an oasis rather than the power of God to make rivers flow in dry places”?

THE CHALLENGE We must lift our sight from the pages of disruption and complexities, or we can’t see much at all. We find no hope in our families, churches, and communities. Seeing new involves the whole person. As leaders, we must see with the heart of faith and determination in our God who makes all things new. We can’t deny that fact that God invests new mercy, a new earth and new heaven, new ways of making things new, and the newness of life through Jesus the Christ. Seeing that God shows us new; we must be intentional about seeing new and it must become a part of our daily practice.

THE PRAYER Lord, we are your people, whom you show vision and insight to help us to See New. Bless us in Jesus’ name to experience new vision for faith sharing in an ever-changing society.

“Interrupted by God” Carmichael Crutchfield Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor, and theologian whose opposition to Nazism led to his execution in 1945, wrote in his Classic Exploration of Christian Community in 1939 titled Life Together, “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.” Every Sunday lay people come to church seeking Jesus. They are on the inside and probably have been coming a long time and still seek Jesus. And every Sunday the preacher extends the invitation to follow Jesus (Discipleship). Some choose to say yes to Jesus and yet others can’t find their way to say yes. Using Bonhoeffer words, “some are not ready to be interrupted by God.” On the other hand, some are not ready.

In Franco Zeffirelli's beautiful film, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon," the turning point in the story comes when Francis of Assisi, born and raised in a wealthy and privileged (and religiously observant) family, stands before the entire town, including the local bishop and his parents, strips off his clothes, and walks off into the mountains to live among the poor as a beggar. Francis is responding to a call that has troubled him since he returned, ill with fever, from the adventure of fighting in a war between petty nobles. His life before the war no longer makes sense, and he feels his soul being pulled toward a different way of living, a radical giving up of everything that would have been easily his, a turning away from the comfortable path that has been laid out before him. Francis was not just ill; in spite of his family's wealth, he was hungry and thirsty and lost. His conversion experience came in the midst of suffering and uncertainty. Francis’ life was interrupted.

Retired Bishop Will Willimon of the UMC church says, “Grace is free, but it can be very expensive.” Peter says to Jesus, we have left everything too and followed you. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.”

Your reward for your faithfulness to Jesus in discipleship will not be a return to your previous socioeconomic situation. The rewards in this life involve both the benefits of inclusion in the new family gathered around Jesus, those that do the will of God become the family of fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters. But also, the reward is the hardship of persecutions. As Bishop Willimon says, grace is free, but it can be very expensive. Persecutions are to be expected as long as Christians are witnessing to the gospel in the world.

It is difficult for us today to relate to taking up the cross as we see it in the gospel accounts because we are not being led to Jesus’ death. But more importantly, it is difficult for us because we are saturated with the demand for pleasure and instant gratification.

One of our rewards for faithfulness is persecution. Our persecution is not at the hands of Nero, but by facing up to and meeting head on the evil and suffering of this world. We are not to hide from suffering and evil by locking our doors and hiding behind our sense of security. No, we are to overcome these realities through loving service.

A CHRISTIAN’S AFFIRMATION

I have been reading this hard-back daily devotion for over 20 years. This book has 31 devotions, one for each day of the month. I must confess, I don’t read it consistently but when I open the book and let it fall open on any page, I am always blessed. Believe it or not, God directs those pages to fall on the day of the month where I need them to fall. I marvel at how God knows me so well and knows exactly what I need and when.

On the day I read this particular devotion, I was overwhelmed with several things going on in my life. Being a care-giver for two old men that I love very much, my dad and his brother, is most challenging to say the least. As I am balancing church and home responsibilities, I often wonder if I am doing enough, too much and am I making the right decisions. How can I do all that I do if it wasn’t for the Lord guiding me.

After I read this devotion, it gave me strength and determination that God’s word always affirms His goodness, forgiveness and peace. My disdain slowly drifted away and I was inspired once again to believe in God’s mission for my life.

I know that whatever happens, good, bad or indifferent the words in this devotion encouraged me to love and trust God even more. Also, God has taught me how to forgive and continue to love like He does.

Part of this devotion said, "What amazing grace! What undeserved acceptance and favor! How wonderful that You ask me to do absolutely nothing to earn Your forgiveness–no striving to measure up, no self-punishment, no prolonged remorse, no self-blame, no deeds of penance—that I don’t have to sink down into regrets, or into shame, or into denial, or into excuses for things I do wrong. I’m so thankful that You don’t hold a pair of scales and ask me to pile up enough good works to outweigh my sins, my failures, my unworthiness…that it’s all by grace through faith. What an incentive to live a life that pleases You, that brings You joy and not grief!"

UNCF AND FOUNDING HBCUs SIGN HISTORIC AGREEMENT TO LAUNCH HBCUv

a Digital Learning and Community Engagement Platform “By HBCUs, for HBCUs”

ATLANTA, GA (Aug. 8, 2024)—In a landmark event that promises to redefine the future of higher education, UNCF (United Negro College Fund) and six historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) signed a historic consortium agreement, ushering in the first official partnerships on HBCUv®. The digital learning and community engagement platform—designed by HBCUs, for HBCUs—was unveiled during UNITE 2024: UNCF Summit for Black Higher Education, marking a transformative moment for champions of Black higher education.

Presidents and senior leaders from Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Jarvis Christian University, Lane College, Shaw University, Talladega College and UNCF took the stage to celebrate this monumental achievement. These institutions, along with Claflin University, Dillard University and Johnson C. Smith University, embarked on a multi-year journey to harness digital technologies that would amplify the enduring legacy and impact of HBCUs. This visionary project began with over 3,000 hours of exhaustive research involving students, faculty and staff to uncover the key drivers of HBCU student success. The insights from this user experience research shaped the development of the platform, which is designed to mirror the authentic, culturally affirming, and supportive environments found on HBCU campuses.

William Chetlin, an HBCUv student champion from Jarvis Christian University, captured the essence of the new technology: “When I first saw HBCUv, I was instantly captivated. Most technologies I have used in school don’t resonate with my lived experience as an HBCU student. But the moment I signed in and saw ‘The Yard,’ I was like, Wow! This feels like an HBCU!” The signing ceremony follows the successful development of the HBCUv® platform earlier this year. HBCUv integrates cutting-edge digital learning and collaboration tools to facilitate course delivery, course sharing, social engagement and career advancement in one united, HBCU-inspired interface. HBCUv is now set to foster collaboration and success among HBCU students, faculty and staff this Fall. While this pilot semester will feature a set of curated tools, additional capabilities and resources are coming online later in the year. The HBCUv team also announced its plans to invite all HBCUs and a broad range of partners to join the platform in the coming years.

Beyond the platform itself, HBCUv offers shared service opportunities to participating HBCUs, leveraging the individual strengths of participating institutions alongside new resources supported by UNCF and other partners. This includes online course design services rooted in research-based best practices and pedagogical approaches unique to HBCUs. HBCUv will also create a digital “one-stop-shop” model for holistic student support services, deploying evidencebased intervention strategies optimized for the HBCU context, including the latest advances in Generative AI tools.

Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF, reflected on the significance of this moment: “As we celebrate UNCF’s 80th anniversary and the tremendous accomplishments of our HBCUs, we look toward the future with enthusiasm and confidence. The HBCUv signing ceremony concludes the project’s initial design and development phase and initiates an exciting new chapter in UNCF’s effort to reimagine Black higher education. This visionary future, shepherded by UNCF’s Institute for Capacity Building, seeks to promote development and adoption of tools, resources and strategies that strengthen the missions of Black colleges and universities. HBCUv is actively recruiting other HBCUs, both public and private, to join the initial cohort of founding HBCUv institutions. Miles College Student Places 3rd in Poster Competition at Cancer Research Symposium Written by Tapeka Fennell August 8, 2024

The Miles College McNair Program highlights Jai D. Gaines, a Biology major and distinguished McNair Research Scholar who recently earned 3rd Place Award in a poster presentation competition at the prestigious Morehouse School of Medicine/Tuskegee University/University of Alabama at Birmingham O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Partnership Research Symposium 2024. The research symposium was held at the Hilton Birmingham at UAB Hotel (July 23-24, 2024) and showcased groundbreaking research in cancer with contributions from outstanding investigators and talented student participants. Jai Gaines completed her summer internship research in Dr. Ganji Purnachandra Nagaraju, Ph.D.'s lab at UAB who served as her mentor. She worked on the project titled: NRBF2 and ATG14 Complex in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma: A Computational and In Vitro Investigation. Also participating in the PRSTP summer 2024 internship program from Miles College were Mr. Kolby King (McNair Scholar), Ms. Amir Brown (McNair Scholar), and Ms. Dariya Jones (Strada Scholar). They, too, successfully completed the program. Several other McNair scholars are currently engaged in research in various laboratories at UAB and other research institutions across the country this summer.

The Partnership Research Summer Training Program (PRSTP) is an undergraduate summer training program of the MSM/TU/UABCCC U54 Project designed to provide students with comprehensive laboratory research training in biomedical research focused on cancer-related studies. It offers an immersive experience that includes hands-on research, mentorship from leading experts, and opportunities to present findings at esteemed conferences. Jai's accomplishment not only reflects her hard work and determination but also signifies the growing impact of the McNair Scholars Program at Miles College.

The McNair program is dedicated to preparing first-generation and underrepresented students for doctoral studies through exposure to faculty-led hands-on research experiences and other scholarly activities. Miles College Unveils New Turf Practice Field Written by Mya Jolly Miles College is proud to announce the completion of a new turf practice field for its football team, made possible through a generous grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. This significant upgrade comes just in time as the Golden Bears prepare for the upcoming football season, ensuring that our student-athletes have the best resources at their disposal.

Dr. Steven E. Hairston, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Development at Miles College, played a pivotal role in securing the grant along with Athletic Director, Fred Watson. Their leadership and commitment to the students of Miles College have resulted in a state-of-the-art practice facility that not only meets the needs of the football team but also stands as a symbol of the college's dedication to excellence in athletics.

The grant, awarded through the HBCU Invitational Field Refurbishment Program, facilitated the conversion of the collegeʼs natural grass field to a high-quality turf field. This program, funded by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation (AMBFF) and supported by the NFL Foundation, was specifically designed to enhance field quality, safety, and accessibility for students and local community groups that serve youth through football. The program targeted select HBCUs in Georgia and Alabama, and Miles College is honored to have been chosen as a recipient.

“This new field will not only benefit the football program but will also benefit our student intramural athletics and serve as a resource for the broader Miles College community and local youth programs. The college remains committed to fostering an environment where students can excel both on and off the field. We offer our thanks to the Arthur M. S.T.E.P. SUCCESSFULLY PREPARES STUDENTS FOR FALL The Texas College Summer Transition Enrichment Program (S.T.E.P.) successfully prepared over 100 students for the upcoming fall semester. This six-week long program is an initiative for incoming freshmen that desire to get a head start on their college career. S.T.E.P. is designed to help acclimatize first-time freshmen to the College atmosphere while also providing them the opportunity to earn 12 credit hours before their first fall semester.

With a structured schedule, students stay on campus and attend class throughout the day, with special guest speakers every Friday, as well as leadership development and other campus involvement opportunities.

TCNAA ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT Texas College is pleased to advise that the Texas College National Alumni & Ex-Students Association (TCNAA) has elected Athena Smith Jackson as the new TCNAA National President.

Athena Smith Jackson is a 1978 Cum Laude graduate of Texas College, where she majored in Social Science, and is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Following her graduation from Texas College, she earned the Master of Science degree in Public Administration, as well as a certification as a Certified Trainer in Human Resource Development and Training. Now retired, Smith Jackson was a multi-faceted accomplished higher education professional with a proven record of success in executive leadership administration, logistical planning and implementation of programs and events, community outreach, conflict management, counseling, and training. She served Florida Memorial University, an HBCU in Miami, Florida, for over 25 years, culminating her professional tenure as the Executive Director of the Career Development Center. Congruently, she also served on the National Urban League Executive Advisory Board, the Job Corp College Relations Board, and the War on Poverty Council.

Aside from her professional experiences, she has faithfully served TCNAA as the South Florida Chapter President, Marketing Committee Chairperson, Last Mile Scholarship Program Chairperson, and as a member of the Homecoming Committee. As the South Florida Chapter President, she led the charge that increased membership, doubled giving to Texas College, and created the South Florida Chapter Signature Scholarship Weekend event with alumni participants from across the country. Moreover, Smith Jackson was voted as the 2022 TCNAA Outstanding Alumna.

Reimagine Children’s Ministry at the Connectional Youth, and Young Adult Conference Submitted by Rev. Phoebe Presson CME Church Program Development Office

The Connectional Youth, and Young Adult Conference held in Greensboro, North Carolina, witnessed significant participation from various church leaders and educational officers dedicated to the development and well-being of young individuals.

One of the highlights of the conference was the sponsorship of a Mild Exceptionality Center by the Reimagining Children Ministry. Located at the rear of the worship center, this initiative aimed to create an inclusive and engaging environment for children with mild exceptionalities. The efforts were spearheaded by Bishop Teresa Snorton, Rev. Amina McIntyre, Mrs. CheRhonda Greenlee, and Rev. Phoebe Presson. Together, they shared innovative ideas on how churches can incorporate simple sensory items into their services to enhance the experience for all children.

The sensory station at the conference was a vibrant and inviting space. It featured sensory toys, arts and crafts items, tables, mats, pillows, ear plugs, and two sensory tents adorned with LED lights. This thoughtful setup provided a safe and stimulating area for children to explore and enjoy. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers expressed their gratitude for this initiative, appreciating the positive impact it had on their children.

The Reimagining Children Ministry, supported by a Nurturing Children Grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., aims to “reintroduce” children aged 5-11 years old to prayer and worship. Out of over 70 churches that applied for the grant, 14 were selected to receive funding, training, and a digital curriculum developed by The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. This Nurturing Children Grant, amounting to $1.25 million over five years, underscores the commitment to nurturing the spiritual growth of young children.

The first module of this comprehensive program is now available to all CME churches. By simply scanning the QR code above and registering for the program, churches can access a wealth of materials designed to enrich the spiritual lives of children. This initiative is a testament to the collective effort to invest in the future by Reimagining Children’s Ministry.

The conference in Greensboro not only highlighted the importance of inclusivity and sensory engagement, but also emphasized the broader goal of fostering a nurturing environment for the spiritual growth of young children.

Through the collaborative efforts of community, church leaders and outside organizations, the future of children’s ministry looks promising and filled with potential.

Why Chaplaincy (Clinical Pastoral Education)?

Three professions have people’s lives in their hands: the law, medicine, and organized religion. Law and medicine require degrees, internships, residences, and board certification. These professions make life-anddeath decisions daily, and the following scenarios tell their stories.

Legally, many innocent persons sit on death row or have life sentences because they had courtappointed attorneys without the financial and human resources to research the case thoroughly. Ask the Southern Poverty Law Center Innocence Project, Bryan Stevenson, and the Equal Justice Initiative, or Lenell Geter. In 1982, despite conflicts in eyewitness testimony, co-workers’ claims that Geter was at work during the time of the robbery, and no prior criminal record, Geter, a black engineer, was convicted for the armed robbery of a fast-food restaurant near Dallas, Texas, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The 60 Minutes team, including executive producer Don Hewitt, producer Suzanne St. Pierre, and correspondent Morley Safer, thoroughly retraced the events leading to Geter’s arrest and conviction.

Their investigation produced new witnesses and discovered several prosecution omissions and errors.

Geter was released in March 1984 (60 Minutes: Lenell Geter’s in Jail). Without the investigative and high-profile reporting of 60 Minutes, for which it won the prestigious Peabody Award, Geter might have remained in jail. Today, Geter, an author and professional development coach, lives with his family in South Carolina, where he serves as a deacon at the church he attends.

Similarly to the law, medicine has its share of egregious acts. From 1932-1972, four decades, doctors from the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) told the African American participants [of a study]—399 men 20

with latent syphilis and a control group of 201 others who were free of the disease—that they were being treated for bad blood, a term used regularly to refer to a variety of diseases. Health workers monitored the men but only gave them placebos, although penicillin became the recommended treatment for syphilis in 1947. These poor men experienced severe health problems, including blindness, mental impairment, or death. Similarly, Henrietta Lacks (1920 – 1951) was an African-American woman whose cancer cells (cells that divide constantly, forming solid tumors or flooding the lymph or blood with abnormal cells) are the source of the HeLa cell line, harvested without her or her family’s consent. The HeLa cell line is the first immortalized human cell line because they are durable and prolific, supporting extensive applications in scientific study and one of the most important medical research cell lines, used in the development and advancements of polio vaccine, gene mapping, and in-vitro fertilization. An immortalized cell line reproduces indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to the present day.

Doctors discovered that Lacks’ body was the source of these cells when they biopsied her tumor during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1951. Her family only learned about the HeLa line in 1975. Only in 2013, as a result of bioethics and questions of consent, did the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant the Lacks family control over the use of data on the HeLa cell genome (www.britannica.com). Celebrated civil rights attorney Ben Crump and attorney Christopher Seeger announced on August 5, 2024, that they have filed a lawsuit on behalf of Henrietta Lacks’ family against Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., Novartis Gene Therapies Inc., Viatris Inc., and Mylan Pharmaceuticals. The lawsuit cites wrongful and unauthorized commercialization (Afro News).

Submissions In these stories regarding law and medicine, [it is observed that] lawyers and doctors experience rigorous training and go through several levels of certification—and error and wrong doing still occur. Thus, for the Ministry of the Gospel, a Call is important, but the Call and an Anointing are not enough! Because they are not enough, we have an epidemic of church hurt! Training is essential!

Where was Jesus between the ages of 12-30? He was probably training with Afro-Asian sages, women and men, scholars, and rabbis: eighteen years of training to do a ministry for three years. Many of us resist training because we get confused and come from fear.

Some of the trash talks about seminary often allude to seminary being dubbed “cemetery” because we allegedly do not want the learning to overwhelm the burning. Learning cannot erase the burning unless the burning was a farce-- an emotional catharsis. Scripture stresses the importance of education in general and leadership in particular. A few examples make the case.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to educate our young so that even when they are old, they will not get lost; they will remember. Proverbs 18:16 notes that our gifts open doors for us and give us access to greatness. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God shares that there is a divine plan for us for our best interests, our welfare, and a hopeful future without harm. Lastly, 2 Timothy 2:15 invokes study as we are to be diligent in presenting ourselves to God for divine approval as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. In sum, God has a call on our lives, and we are to prepare, to educate ourselves, to live out our purpose. Lived faith is not pretense and requires educational exercise. One of the greatest educators of our times, Dr. Bell Hooks (1952-2021) [once said], “Education as the practice of freedom affirms healthy selfesteem in students as it promotes their capacity to be aware and live consciously. It teaches them to reflect and act in ways that further self-actualization, rather than conformity to the status quo.” Thus, when we love, education is an act of freedom. The freedom to serve mindfully and effectively requires training. Persons who pastor and preach need transforming training. To illustrate, we review four aspects of ministry: scripture for exegesis or analyzing the texts, church administration, preaching, and pastoral care.

One needs an in-depth study of scripture, preferably in the original languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek to understand the context and content of the texts. We lose nuances with translation. Biblical geography, culture, and liturgy, are also important.

Church administration requires study and special knowledge. We need to understand leadership, finances, communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and reading a congregation and local history. Preaching is an art and a science.

Too often, people develop a preaching style based on their mentors or their favorite online preacher.

They develop speech patterns like hoops when such vocalization is not natural to them, or add pat phrases that fill up space when they really need to breathe.

Some preachers adopt a speaking rhythm and body language based on someone else’s style and fail to become their authentic selves. Pastoral care, a gift and a practice, is critical for the health and well-being of a congregation. The new ruling of the CME Church that now requires Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for ordination is on point. Whereas a Master of Divinity is required by many denominations, no one should be in ministerial leadership without CPE or similar training.

Why? CPE helps leaders see who they are, face their strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to do active listening, where we learn from people what they need, as opposed to superimposing our thoughts upon their situation.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a supervised, life-changing, contextual learning experience concerning the spiritual care of others.

CPE is both a critical component for a vocational pathway toward chaplaincy and many denominational or adjudicatory bodies, like our denomination, now require CPE for ordination. CPE involves intense study, training, and practical experience. The training involves the actual practice of ministry to persons, detailed reporting and evaluation of that practice, and pastoral supervision. People learn the background theory for all phases of ministry to persons – how to listen, how to counsel, how to keep a confidence, when to speak, and when to be silent. The training involves a small group of peers in a common learning experience. Each participant creates an individual contract for learning consistent with CPE’s objectives.

Submissions Continued from previous page auspices of an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)-certified supervisor (faculty) attached to an ACPE-accredited CPE center. Our own Bishop Teresa Snorton, Ecumenical Bishop, and the visionary for this shift, served as former Executive Director for ACPE. The trainer for CPE programs must be a Board Certified Educator. Students can take a basic unit of CPE over one term (usually Fall, Spring, or Summer) or in an extended unit (usually over two terms). One of the biggest gifts of doing CPE training is that it helps to eliminate, at least lessen, church hurt.

Church hurt occurs in all denominations at all levels of leadership and within the laity. Church hurt is the psychological and emotional pain felt as a result of negative experiences within a religious congregation or community that come from situations where persons feel rejected, betrayed, mistreated, or judged by other church members or leaders. Such pain often results in isolation, loss of faith, and disillusionment.

People may end up questioning their beliefs and relationship with God. Church hurt is violence, a type of pain due to conflicts emerging from hypocrisy, abuses of power, or exclusionary attitudes (www. aasem.org). Those who hurt others in the church are bullies.

Bullies in the church cause dissension and use their cowardly behavior to manipulate and destroy.

At the local church level, pastors often lead based on their gifts and their charisms, sometimes favor certain people, and do not always practice justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

Pastors can be abusive in their care and not respect appropriate boundaries. Some see the church as their cash cow. Some, unfortunately, use people to appease their various financial, physical, sexual, sensual, and psychological needs. Based upon their observances, particularly of mega-church pastors, pastor-bullies have a sense of entitlement.

Clergy leaders at the district, association, presbytery, conference, and episcopal levels, by definition, have more power and, thus, more capacity to do harm. Such hurt often occurs as denying a promotion or needed resources or demoting someone because the leader senses the person under their leadership did not toe the line. The hurt may emerge as 22

the practice of favoritism from the top and supplying favors and extra resources from those they lead.

Among congregants, church hurt often emerges as gossip, shunning, unwillingness to entertain other opinions, and other divisive attitudes around class, gender, race, sexual orientation, age, and ability. Many churches have split over ideas often begun in church hurt. The gift of CPE training is that it heightens the awareness of students, so they learn who they are.

Students learn about their biases and fears, and how these attitudes color how they do clergy leadership and pastoral care. Getting feedback from their cohort, who they study and train with, and the ability to give others feedback help hone their skills. My CPE training at the Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, NC (August 2023-April 2024) was insightful, exhausting, and lifechanging. We learned to see hurt and how to respond.

Being a chaplain intern required intense physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual vitalities. That training reflected my awareness of the two energies in the universe: love and fear.

Love is FACTS: Freedom, Appreciation, Compassionate Communication, Trust, and Sincerity.

The lesson Jesus teaches throughout the parables and preaching is to love God, love self, and love neighbor (Luke 10:25-27) with one’s heart, mind, body, and soul. Fear, fueled by our delusional egos, is a call for love. Fear needs to control, bully, micro-manage, and always be in charge. Love shares power, knows how to support others, and listens well to the needs of the community. Love embodied is a hallmark of CPE. CPE helps leaders grow into their authentic selves, speak truth to power, know how to listen, know how to accompany people in times of growth and loss, live a balanced life, and know how to be Ecclesiastes people, where we adjust to the seasons of life we experience.

CPE honors the love ethic of Jesus Christ. May all lay and clergy leaders engage in spiritual counseling, therapy, or CPE training so that we may be our best selves in giving care and can stem the tsunami of church hurt. With the existential crisis amidst the world today, with the volcanic levels of anxiety, CPE offers a healthy lens to gain a perspective of service and compassion.

The Dallas-Fort Worth-Northwest Texas Region held their annual usher program on April 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. The Gilbert Memorial CME Church in Wichita Falls, Texas, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Tammy Black, served as the host church. The theme, Vessels to Praise, Honor, and Serve, was based on Romans 9:21 and II Timothy 2:20-21.

The DFW-NWT Ushers dedicated this program to the memory of Rebecca Loudermilk who went to claim her heavenly reward on February 17, 2024. Special presentations of Golden Servant/Glove Award were made to the ushers, and the recipient of the Usher of the Year Award was Tabitha James.

Rev. Russell O. Fuller, Sr., Presiding Elder, Dallas District, was in attendance. Rev. Dr. Drexel N. Mitchell, Sr., Prsiding Elder of the Ft. Worth District, introduced our speaker, Rev. Valencia Elaine Edner. She serves as the pastor of Carter Metropolitan CME Church in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Sis. Dorruth Boyd (deceased) had the vision to bring fellowship in the NWT District. She made everything work out for our congregation. I believe everyone left spiritually filled with God's word, and the Love/Light shined. The day was rainy; however, we rejoiced in the day the Lord made.

Ministry to Men Fishing Challenge Submitted by Bro. Guy M. Harris

On May 4, 2024, the Ministry to Men in the 6th Episcopal District held a FISHING CHALLENGE. We are thankful to the Lord God for blessing our efforts and enriching our experiences. During this ministry opportunity, we navigated various obstacles in our attempt to "Be Bold and See New." Four impactful leaders were selected to deliver 8-to-12-minute presentations using the online skills we have been honing in this ministry. These presentations were developed from Biblical messages about fish and fishing and were aimed at enhancing effective Men’s Ministry. Our presenters succeeded in helping us achieve this part of our mission.

The presentations were shared on Zoom and YouTube during the following time slots: 8am EST: Dr. Jerry Hardee - Jonah 1:1-3, Don’t Play Hide and Seek with God! (14 views) 12pm EST: Rev. Dr. Earl Griffin - John 21:1-17, Men Who Fish, Feed, and Fellowship (31 views) 6pm EST: Bishop Thomas L. Brown Sr. - Luke 5:1-11, Let’s Go Fishing with Jesus (9 views) 8pm EST: Rev. Dr. Curtis West - Luke 5:5, Nevertheless (9 views) Participants were not only part of a unique ministry event, but they also had the opportunity to learn and grow.

They were required to watch at least one presentation, note the presenter’s name, scripture, and topic, and then post this information along with a picture of themselves doing something related to fish or fishing on their church Facebook page. They also needed to share it on their Episcopal Facebook page and the Sixth Episcopal Facebook page. This event was seen as a technology challenge, but it was also a great opportunity for all to become more familiar with using Zoom and Facebook, capturing quality images, and posting on social media platforms. These social media skills will be invaluable in our ability to do ministry in the future. After a full day of fishing, feasting, fellowship, and fun, we had over 63 participants from as far away as Portland, Maine. We engaged with AME Churches, CME Churches, other Christian denominations, and a Muslim Study Group. We are committed to developing the skills to create quality online content for effective Men’s Ministry groups.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Tawanna Harris for her unwavering technical support throughout this collaboration and in all our Ministry to Men activities. We also extend our deepest appreciation to the men at every level of this team who invest their time, energy, and effort into developing effective Men’s Ministry opportunities for our community. From August 5th through the 9th, 2024, St. Mary CME Temple of Bastrop, Louisiana (LA), partnered with Mt. Sinai Williams Temple of Collinston, LA, and hosted its VBS/Back to School Reveal. The title and dates were chosen because it was a week prior to the beginning of school, and the paramount desire of the director was that ALL PARTICIPANTS learn something "new or unexpected" about themselves, thus "reveal."

There were classes for all ages, from kindergartners to adults. The instructors were second to none, from educators to a professional artist to aspiring musicians, as well as a former presiding elder and pastors, all who did an amazing job imparting knowledge.

The theme for the week long event was, 24/7 Jesus Makes a Way Every Day! There were four-and-a-half days of instruction with presentations from each class on the last day.

The fellowship, as well as snacks, experienced by the participants was exhilarating with many anticipating next year's events.

Pastor Diane Neal of St. Mary in Bastrop, and Pastor Barbara Johnson of Mt. Sinai Williams Temple, united in spreading the prevailing message that they are testaments that 24/7 Jesus Makes a Way Every Day!!!

Sensory Spaces in Worship Settings Submitted by Rev. Dr. Linda Barnett Eighth Episcopal Director of Christian Education and Formation

Children, youth and young adults convened in Greensboro, North Carolina, for a spiritually transformative experience. During the conference, sensory items were located in the rear of the ballroom by the worship coordinators for children experiencing sensory challenges. Children and facilitators used the sensory tent and sensory items to help decrease anxiety and provide a more pleasurable experience for those impacted by overstimulation. This summer, during the Eighth Episcopal District Training Institute at Texas College, I collaborated with Rev. Tara Mehundrew and Rev. Pamela Blair, One Church One School Coordinators for the Dallas District and the Eighth Episcopal District, respectively. Clergy and laity were provided insight on how the church can facilitate learning and address sensory needs for persons during worship experiences. Rev. Mehundrew has experience as a behavioral specialist, Rev. Blair represented parents of children with learning differences, and I shared information as an occupational therapist. A large sensory tent with fiber optic lighting, a sound machine, weighted blankets, and fidget toys was placed in the gym at Texas College for participants of all age ranges to utilize as needed to de-escalate from overstimulation and decrease anxiety.

Listed below are several practical tools to consider as leaders continue shaping their church’s educational ministry considering individuals with sensory processing difficulties. As a practicing occupational therapist, I have knowledge in learning differences among individuals and how sensory input from the environment influences how the body responds to sensory input. Sensory processing is the way our brain receives, interprets, and responds to information from our senses, like sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Sensory processing helps us understand and interact with the world around us.

In this article, I want to suggest practical ways Christian educators and ministry leaders can incorporate providing sensory spaces during worship. Sensory spaces for individuals challenged by overstimulation from sights and sounds can help decrease anxiety and increase comfort while participating in worship. Sensory spaces for children can include areas with a few items such as fidget toys, noise canceling headphones, weighted blankets, and building blocks. Ushers can provide access to the items upon request from their caregivers, ensuring items are sanitized adequately to decrease the spread of COVID. Rocking chairs, bean bags, and low lighting can be used in children and youth rooms to decrease overstimulation and unwanted social behaviors such as tantrums, hitting, and running often associated with sensory processing difficulties.

Sensory processing disorders (SPDs) can be associated with several other diagnoses or conditions.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Many individuals with autism experience sensory sensitivities, where they might be over- or under-responsive to sensory stimuli.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): People with ADHD might have sensory processing challenges, often struggling with sensory overload or being overly sensitive to certain stimuli.

Anxiety Disorders: Sensory processing difficulties can heighten anxiety, especially in environments with overwhelming sensory input.

Learning Disabilities: Some individuals with learning disabilities may also experience sensory processing issues, impacting their ability to concentrate and learn.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Trauma can affect sensory processing, leading to heightened sensitivity or difficulty filtering out irrelevant sensory information.

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD): This condition, also known as dyspraxia, often involves challenges with processing sensory information, which can affect movement and coordination.

Sensory Modulation Disorder (SMD): A subtype of sensory processing disorder, SMD involves difficulty regulating responses to sensory stimuli, leading to either over- or under-reactions.

These conditions can overlap, and sensory processing issues can vary in severity among individuals with these diagnoses. It behooves us as educators to learn the needs of those whom we serve and utilize the resources we have available in our congregations, communities, and denomination. While the Bible doesn’t directly mention sensory challenges, several scriptures emphasize caring for others, understanding, and compassion, which can be applied to supporting those with sensory processing difficulties. One relevant verse is 1 Corinthians 12:25-26 (NIV): “So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it."

This passage encourages believers to care for each member of the community, recognizing and addressing their unique needs and challenges, including those related to sensory processing. Another relevant verse is Galatians 6:2 (NIV): “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." This verse highlights the importance of supporting one another, which can include understanding and accommodating sensory challenges in others.

Seeing the Future Through the Eyes of the 4th Submitted by Rev. Urseila Todd Williams

If you have spent any amount of time interacting with Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, then you know it is rarely business as usual. He is a self-proclaimed out-of-thebox kind of person, and again if you know him, you know this is definitely true.

During the 2023 Annual Conference season for the Fourth Episcopal District, Bishop Carter wanted a way to incorporate the children and youth into the daily processes of the Annual Conference. This was the inception of the title "Junior Bishop" for the 4th Episcopal District. Several children and youth were selected to take part in this new and innovative feature of the Annual Conference. The Junior Bishop presided alongside Bishop Carter to carry out motions, address the secretary regarding the next item on the agenda, and even requesting pledges.

The highlight of the 22-23 North East Mississippi Region Annual Conference was a young man by the name of Kyler Mason Coleman. He served as Junior Bishop during the time when pledges were being made. Kyler then did what most of us would never consider doing. He pledged his entire piggy bank. Whether he knew it or not, he was representing the mindset of the believers in the book of Acts very well. Without hesitation and with joy he pledged his entire piggy bank.

Little did we know what would occur the next time we gathered together for the annual conference.

One year later the Fourth Episcopal District convened for the first time in a Joint Annual Conference in Southaven, Mississippi at the Landers Center on July 16-18, 2024. Bishop Carter again called for the Junior Bishops. The following children and youth served as Junior Bishops this year: Anyleiah Townsend, Catherine Patterson, Kylah Adams, Joshua Stephens, Diamond Satcher and, yes, Kyler Mason Coleman. This year Kyler received the title "Senior Junior Bishop of the Fourth Episcopal District."

I must say, to our amazement Kyler came with piggy banks in tow. Not one, but two piggy banks this year. He presided just as a senior junior bishop should with poise and determination. Although we may not see the full impact that this type of mentoring opportunity will have in the lives of our children and youth, it is imperative that we all survey our surroundings.

Who are we training to take our place? It is our responsibility to teach our children and youth how to navigate through the business aspects of the church that sustains our connectivity. It is ludicrous to expect anyone to proficiently execute the expectations of any assignment or task without being thoroughly and properly trained. Let us take time to invest in our children and youth today. It is an injustice to leave them to fend for themselves.

Waymond Bryant Inducted Into Football Hall of Fame Submitted by Kenneth Scruggs

Lane Chapel CME Church celebrates Bro. Waymond Bryant for his induction into the Black College Football Class of 2024 Hall of Fame (HOF). The official HOF induction ceremony was held June 13-14, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. Bro. Bryant was one of seven inductees for the Class of 2024.

Lane Chapel CME Church in Lewisville, Texas, held a reception on June 23, 2024, to honor Bro. Bryant's significant recognition.

Bro. Bryant was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended Roosevelt High School where he excelled in football and track. He earned a scholarship to play football at Tennessee State University. While at TSU, he earned several awards including being named "All American" twice. In 1974 he declared for the NFL draft and was selected as the overall #4 pick by the Chicago Bears. As a rookie, he earned a starting position and played for 4 NFL seasons. He retired from professional football in 1978.

After retirement from the NFL, Bro. Bryant and his wife, Mary, moved to Lewisville, Texas, and joined Lane Chapel CME Church in 1986. He has been instrumental in the resurgence of the Church. He has served as Sunday School Superintendent, Class Leader, and Trustee Board and Steward Board member. In addition, Bro. Waymond has been a mentor for many young men in the Dallas/Lewisville area.

Bro. and Sis. Bryant have a son, Jason; daughter-in-law, Quintet; granddaughter, Maya; and grandson, Mason.

FACT SHEET: President Biden Designates Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument Today, during the 116th anniversary of the Springfield Race Riot, which occurred August 14-16, 1908, President Biden will sign a proclamation establishing the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument in Springfield, Illinois. The new national monument will tell the story of a horrific attack by a white mob on a Black community that was representative of the racism, intimidation, and violence that Black Americans experienced across the country. National outrage at the attack – which occurred just blocks away from President Abraham Lincoln’s home – spurred action on civil rights, including the creation of the organization now known as the NAACP. By establishing the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument, President Biden is recognizing the significance of these events and the broader history of Black community resilience in the face of violent oppression. At a time when some are working to rewrite history and erase painful moments in our past, President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to protecting places that help tell a more complete story of our nation’s history, including by recognizing difficult moments that have been ignored or obscured for far too long.

Following the riot, national leaders gathered to work together for civil rights, which led to the creation of the NAACP and helped turn the Springfield 1908 Race Riot’s legacy from one of tragedy alone to an event that led to enduring progress and change for communities nationwide.

Today’s designation furthers the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to advancing civil rights and racial justice, including through President Biden signing the Emmett Till Antilynching Act to codify lynching as a federal hate crime, establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, and dedicating Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument The Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument will protect 1.57 acres of federal land in Springfield, Illinois, and will be managed by the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service. Through the historical objects protected at this site, the monument will tell the story of the violent mob that attacked the Black community in Springfield and lynched two Black men. The Springfield 1908 Race Riot was both a tragic event, and it was emblematic of a larger series of lynchings and racist mob violence that targeted Black communities across the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1882 and 1910, there were 2,503 recorded lynchings of Black people in the United States.

In August 1908, two Black men – 17-year-old Joe James and 36-year-old George Richardson –were being held in the Sangamon County Jail in Springfield based on the claims of white accusers, including one who later recanted. On Friday, August 14th, a crowd of largely young, white men gathered around the county jail demanding that the two men be released in order to be lynched. Fearing violence and hoping to defuse the situation, the county sheriff and a local white business owner worked together to have James and Richardson moved to a jail in Bloomington about 60 miles away.

Upon learning of the move, the mob became violent and began looting and burning Black-owned homes and businesses and attacking residents and business owners. Violence continued throughout the weekend despite the efforts of the Governor, state militia, and Black firefighters and community members to defend the local neighborhoods.

The riot was largely quelled by the morning of Sunday, August 16th, but not before two Black men, Scott Burton and William Donnegan, were brutally lynched. By the end of the weekend, almost three dozen businesses in the Levee neighborhood – half of them Black-owned and a majority of the rest Jewish-owned businesses – had been targeted, looted, and vandalized. In the Badlands neighborhood, dozens more homes of Black community members and Black-owned businesses were also destroyed.

Six months after these tragic days, on the centennial of President Lincoln’s birth and invoking what had happened blocks from the only home he ever owned, a diverse set of leaders from around the country, including Ida B. Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Mary Church Terrell, called to create a national organization that could counter racist policies and fight for equality across the United States. Soon after, civil rights leaders gathered in person and founded an organization that would become the NAACP. Since then, the NAACP has become a transformative and effective civil rights organization, playing key roles in successful lawsuits to challenge discrimination and segregation, including Brown v. Board of Education, and advocating to end racial injustice across America.

The Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument will be the second national monument President Biden has designated using his authority under the Antiquities Act that commemorates and preserves a place significant to civil rights history. This action builds on President Biden’s leadership in also establishing or expanding the Blackwell School National Historic Site, the Amache National Historic Site, and the Brown v. Board National Historic Park – all units of the National Park System.

The Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument weaves together two important threads in our nation’s story: the hateful violence targeted against Black Americans, and the power of dedicated individuals to come together across racial lines to transform shock and grief into hope and action. Over the coming years, the National Park Service will work with the local community and organizations to plan for interpretation, commemoration, and visitor experiences associated with the new park site, which includes the charred foundations of five former homes that were never rebuilt. World Home National Historical Site, the new national monument will help tell a fuller and more complete history about the tragedy that occurred in Springfield and the work of civil rights leaders to organize and create lasting change.

The new national monument is part of the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Network, which highlights sites of historic importance to the Civil Rights Movement. It also joins an extensive network of park sites dedicated to commemorating historic places integral to civil rights and equality, such as the Manzanar National Historic Site in California, the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Park in Alabama, the Stonewall National Monument in New York, and the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument in Washington, D.C. Background on Antiquities Act Designations President Theodore Roosevelt first used the Antiquities Act in 1906 to designate Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Since then, 18 presidents of both parties have used this authority to protect natural and historic features in America, including the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument, the Pullman National Monument, and the César E. Chávez National Monument.

The 1908 Springfield Race Riot National Monument will be President Biden’s eleventh use of the Antiquities Act and his second new national monument commemorating a site of significance to the Civil Rights Movement, following the creation of the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in Mississippi and Illinois last year. ###

The Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program is an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations who want to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology through the Office of the CME Endorser. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $550, which includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $150 deposit once accepted into the program, and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
