Do You Have Faith in the Church?

Events in society within these United States and beyond continue to show just how divided we are as people of the world. Not only are we divided, but we are by far also a divisive lot, seeking and exploring ways to create separations. Politics is the weapon of choice for those who deign to be innocent, while others choose actual "guns and knives."

Even in the organized church, there are schisms.

This is nothing new to the church or to the world, but watching a showing of the so-called Tulsa Race Riot brought me to ask, "Do I have faith in the church?" Watching another television show regarding the Buffalo Soldiers reminded me that these men (and Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., sometimes women) had hope for a good end by (means of) faithful service with faith in Editor good people and good principles. Rarely, did they receive the fulness of their hope in the promises of America, and some of these "good people" who denied them their legal rights and earned privileges wore the same colors as they wore. The struggle continues today.

In our day, practicing what we sometimes call ecumenism, we look to the church for a good end, but sometimes it is the people in the church who are the very ones we are fighting and struggling against. It reminds me of the Biblical story of Paul, Onesimus, and Philemon. Though all three men were Christians, they still struggled over what to do concerning the slave Onesimus. Sometimes in our struggle for equal rights and justice, we find ourselves opposite people who profess to be serving the same Jesus that we are serving. Does this mean that our faith in the church is misplaced?

One of the banners for the 2023 CME Unity Summit held in New Orleans, Louisiana, blared, "I AM CME" ... to wit, I am the church!" So, the question becomes, "Do I have faith in me?" Do you believe that the church can and does exist in you? Are you being the church that Jesus is calling forth in the world today, or are you misrepresenting the faith? Scripture reminds us that just as surely as we seek the upturning and overturning of the world, Jesus will have to redeem the church. Since judgment begins with the church, you and I must ask ourselves, "Am I a part of the solution, or part of the problem?"

We read of internal conflicts in the early church and of their continuance within the church throughout history, but we also read of the power of Jesus to act in and through the church, and I conclude that the conflicts that exist in the church are not due as much to the church itself as to the people who are in the church. But to discard one's faith in the church is not the solution. It only aggravates the disagreements and further distances people from one another.

Ultimately, my faith and hope are both IN the church (organization and people) and THROUGH the church.

For my hope and trust are in the Lord of the church and of this world. Like many of you, I anticipate the time of Christ's return with great joy, but I am reminded to be thankful for the delay because both the delay and the church are the grace of God, who is not willing that ANY should be lost. And for this cause, while church people are sometimes fickle, argumentative, and disagreeable, I will maintain faith in the church and faith in God that unlike the residents of Tulsa and the Buffalo Soldiers, I will fully receive the hope of the faith that is taught in the church. What about you?

Is Itinerancy Relevant in the 21st Century?

Submitted by Clarence Kelby Heath, clarenceheath68@yahoo.com On May 06, 2023, I was blessed and privileged to earn a Doctorate in Ministry from Lancaster Theological Seminary located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. My major project was entitled: “A Theological Observation, Pastoral Assessment, and Recommendations to Improve the Itinerant Ministry of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.” It was important for me to enter this level of study for both personal development as well as strategically, academically, and practically to explore and examine what we do as a core ministry as CMEs. For some individuals, you may not care or believe that a focus on itinerancy is important. You might even believe that itinerancy is on a one-way ticket to where-ever, whether it be productive, or unhelpful. Whether you realize it or not, the single most and ultimate ministry that affects everything that happens in the CME Church is itinerancy. Itinerancy’s base spawns from the Laos and morphs through licensure and ordination into persons that commit to protect, preserve, and progress the gospel of Jesus Christ (unless they are only focused on themselves).

My research describes the CME itinerant setting, appointment concerns, and challenges. It offers qualitative data based upon the experiences of clergy persons from across the Connection. It identifies literature text to provide a framework for exploration. Further, it combines a personal narrative and literature review from leading experts in the field of itinerancy, CME authors, and Methodism (history, theology, etc.) as professors and practitioners in the Wesleyan tradition. The project concludes with recommendations that focus on Relationships, Episcopacy, Clergy, Congregations, CME Structure, Connectionalism, and Finance.

If there is a time period that itinerancy is more relevant, it is times like these. We are in a period of time where people are more transient than any other moment in history. People are traveling more, moving more, relocating more, and migrating more than recent memories. They are traveling longer distances to get to church, work, and school. Regardless of careers, people are changing jobs, moving out West, down South, up North, and in/out of the country. We are in a period of multi-migrations, dual citizenships, multiple homes, and interstate transitions which make it a prime time for persons that have an itinerant ministry lifestyle. Therefore, itinerancy should not be viewed as an outcast or antiquated process, but a right home and timely concept.

It appears that itinerancy is not going anywhere. So, is it better to continue the traveling ministry without a check-up, or take the time to explore, expose, and examine it for better execution? I believe it’s time to look at it to see what we/you can do to improve, invest, and upgrade an area of ministry that in many ways is part of the life-blood of the church. Some are quick to claim the weaknesses of itinerancy, when no clergy person can claim their successes (and those that leave the CME Church) without itinerant involvement. We need to do what we are able for the present and future generations of the church to have an improved work of ministry. BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New Loyalty Comes with A Cost Many people measure life and success by wins and losses. When we keep score in life, we lose sight of God's purpose for humanity. I read a bumper sticker years ago that said, “The one who has the most toys wins,” but wins what? Are we loyal to the worldly position or person in power and authority over and above God? God should not have to compete for our acknowledgment, service, and love. Loyalty comes with a cost. When we are loyal to God and God's mission, we gain far more than we could ever imagine. Loyalty to God grants us insurmountable peace which has no value that the world can put on it.

The root word loyal comes from the Old French word loial which is like "legal." However, if someone is only loyal to you because the law requires it, that's not true loyalty which should come from the heart. The cost of loyalty can be extremely high when we attach our loyalty to God. We could lose some family members, social friends, social organizational ties, and political alliances. We then gain frenemies and yet people may stay attached to them because of power or perceived power. Luke records “ If any [person] come to me, and hate not [their] father, and mother, and [spouse], and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and [their] own life also, [that person] cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26, KJV). The first act of our loyalty is to God. It should not be a redemptive loyalty, but genuine loyalty for the one who created us in God’s image.

This loyalty should be demonstrated in our lives in study, prayer, fasting, meditation, and reading the sacred text. In addition, other materials will help the believer to love God with every fiber of their being.

If we are going to be Bold, then our loyalty must be to God, which will cause problems for others. Just as the Apostles were on trial in Acts Chapter 5, we too may be on trial for facing now, embracing next, and seeing new. This is no time for gradual and timid conversations, too much is at stake.

Say this prayer,” Lord, help me to face each day with the Boldness of Christ while embracing your will, to see needed opportunities and possibilities that our Local Church is filled with. May they be filled with new ministries, a new mindset, and new commitment, in Jesus’ name, Amen!

Now Go and be great!

INSIGHTS ON THE APOSTLES’ CREED Carmichael D. Crutchfield

Pastors, Directors, and members of Boards of CE when you meet, spend some time with the question, “What is Christian Education?” “What is your concept of Christian education?” Then ask and determine, “Why do you educate?” “What is your purpose in educating?”

We want easy solutions, but the church’s educational ministry is a rich and multilayered endeavor. It challenges us to wrestle with complex issues. Those issues can be ethical, such as, gambling and sexuality; they can be political, such as immigration; they can be social, such as gun violence; they can be economic, such as, household economics; they can be church practices, such as the sacraments and worship; and they can be doctrinal, such as what we believe.

This article addresses one of the complex doctrinal issues, the Apostles’ Creed. There are some who don’t see a need to use this creed any longer. There are some who desire to change the wording. Is this creed (system of beliefs) still valid? Why? Does it matter what we believe?

The Apostles’ Creed is the oldest statement of faith in continuous use in the Church. The Creed presents a symbolic sketch or outline of the Christian Faith.

The congregation stands, facing the altar. The words they say are said in unison.Yet they do not say “we believe....but rather “I believe.” What is going on here? Why this corporate action in which, nevertheless, the singular pronoun is used? Who is the “I” who speaks in unison with so many others?

As individuals we pledge our loyalty, vow to be faithful. This would explain why it is impossible to say “we” here, for an oath of loyalty or vow of allegiance is personal commitment of the will. This is not something that can be done on behalf of another, but which must be undertaken for oneself. This is something I can do in community, but only for myself and in my own name.

The words of the Apostles’ Creed are the summing up of the sustaining foundations of the faith, which also form its central content. They speak in the language of their time, which can no longer be in respect of our language.

Consequently, it is not enough to recite the Apostles’ Creed; one must enter into the statements inquiringly, reflectively, critically.

Any process of Christian education involves being experienced, reflective and relational.

If we were writing the Creed today, we would no doubt choose a different set of words. In spite of that, we can still repeat the creed in church without doing violence to our personal sincerity as long as we are able to adhere to the intention behind its statements.

Today the Apostles’ Creed, like the Nicene Creed, is an expression of the identity of Christianity throughout the changing centuries, and over and above the widely varying interpretations of the faith. In repeating the Creed, we are uniting with all Christians; we are not only expressing our personal convictions. That is why we need to also share and understand the intention behind the statements.

What is needed today is an explanation and understanding of the things of the Christian faith, which have found their expression in the ancient creedal formulations. To reject them or change them simply because we can’t comprehend them is uneducated. The pastor must be trained and called to explain the traditions of the faith, and not swayed to do otherwise. We could only reject their discarding, if they were wrong.

Continued from previous page So, several years ago I developed a document entitled, “The Meaning of the Apostles’ Creed.” This document seeks to help the local church. It may be purchased from the Department of Christian Education and Formation.

Some denominations have changed the word catholic to read universal. My research of the Creed makes this problematic. For the word universal gives more of a geographical connotation, thus, limiting the meaning of catholic.

Catholic means inclusiveness also. This further means catholic takes on a sense of believing in the mission of the church.

In its essence the Church is not a religious institution, nor even an institution devoted to worship. These aspects of the Church’s life have meaning only insofar as they facilitate the reason for the Church’s existence: the commission to participate in the mission of God, and to continue the mission of Jesus under his authority and with the capacitating power of the Holy Spirit. This is the meaning we of the Church encounter in the conclusion of the Gospel of Matthew. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20) Notice that the authority of Jesus and mission of the Church are linked with the therefore. We do not encounter an emphasis on worship or institutional life. The emphasis is on the mission, summed up in the command “Go.” And Jesus’ presence is linked to the mission. It is directed to all nations.

MSWWD Meets at the 2023 Unity Summit Submittted by Sandra F. Holt MSWWD Membership Chairperson

The Ladies of the Executive Board of the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers’ Department (MSWWD) are proud and happy to report these happenings in this article to The Christian Index. Read on to see why we were happy to be part of the 11th Annual Unity Summit held in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 21-24, 2023.

On Monday evening, August 21, 2023, we started by gathering together several of our wonderful members so we could assemble beautiful gift baskets to be raffled. The baskets were true masterpieces that contained many, many goodies. They appealed to our senses of sight, smell, taste and touch. The Social Concerns Committee spearheaded the raffle. Proceeds from the baskets will be used to give gifts to the students at our own HBC’s. The winners were delighted.

On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the Executive Board met for our early morning meeting. This was followed by our general membership meeting. We were honored to have Patron Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei join us for both meetings and stay with us throughout the day. We always want to honor our Patron Bishop with a gift. Being in New Orleans, we really wanted to give Bishop Adjei some gumbo. However, since we could not physically bring gumbo, we presented our Bishop and Mrs. Adjei with a chef’s hat and a chef’s apron. We then gave him a large poster board pot and proceeded to place money on the pot so they could buy all the needed ingredients.

Our Annual Workshop was held Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Lots of great activities happened there. After our ice breaker, sessions included Being a Bishop or Pastor’s Spouse 101, Protocol, Words from our Widows, and finally The View from the Ministers’ Spouses. Once again, Bishop Adjei sat in on the workshop and gave us more words of encouragement. For our members who could not be with us in person, President Felecia Johnson made zoom available to them. We are hopeful at our next workshop to squeeze in more time.

We are grateful and blessed to have celebrated the Unity Summit in such a grand way. Now, please enjoy some picture highlights.

UT Tyler School of Medicine Launches Early Assurance Program Enrolled local college and universities celebrate with signing day

On Wednesday, August 16, The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, in collaboration with Texas College and seven other local colleges and universities, gathered for the Early Assurance Program Signing Day. “This is a significant milestone for UT Tyler School of Medicine and our partnering colleges,” said President Kirk A. Calhoun, MD, FACP (UT Tyler). “The Pathways program reflects our commitment to recruiting local talent and promoting excellence in medical education. Through this program, we are creating a pathway for East Texas students to pursue a career in medicine.”

The early assurance program, known as “Pathways to Medicine,” will prepare 40 students each year from local colleges and universities for a successful career in the medical field by providing clinical exposure and developing necessary study skills for medical school. Up to 15 will be admitted into the School of Medicine.

President Dwight J. Fennell (Texas College), stated that “The Pathways to Medicine initiative enhances the growth and viability of career options for our students with hands-on exposure. For Texas College, the opportunity for students to enter pathways creates a more realistic exposure through collaboration. Further, it is epic for eight institutions to work towards a common purpose and strategic direction for the benefit of those we educate.”

The Pathways program encompasses a 1–2-year curriculum for junior and senior years. Program activities include professional development, speakers and panel discussions, standardized test prep, including MCAT, volunteering and physician shadowing. Participants undergo the same rigorous admissions process and interviews as other prospective students, and their selection is based on a holistic evaluation of their qualifications.

“With a strong emphasis on community engagement and preventive care, the Early Assurance program will encourage and support greater numbers of students interested in medicine,” said Dr. Gisele Armond Abron, associate dean of admissions (UT Tyler School of Medicine). “This initiative is not only shaping the future of health care but also ensuring that our region welcomes more dedicated and competent physicians.”

Michelle Gaskill-Hames Named President for Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Hawaii New leader has served in role on interim basis since April 2023 Kaiser Permanente has announced that Michelle Gaskill-Hames, BSN, MHA, has been named regional president of Kaiser Permanente for Southern California and Hawaii, a role she has held on an interim basis since April 2023.

Gaskill-Hames will lead the organization's focus on providing integrated, high-quality health care and coverage in partnership with the executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Kaiser Permanente currently provides care and coverage for nearly 5.2 million members in Southern California and Hawaii.

Gaskill-Hames previously served as the chief operating officer and chief strategy, growth and experience officer for Southern California and Hawaii. She was named interim president following the announced retirement of Julie MillerPhipps.

“Michelle uses her deep operational knowledge and strategic focus to ensure that our members consistently receive high-quality care and service at every touchpoint,” said Janet Liang, executive vice president, group president and chief operating officer, care delivery, for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Hospitals. “She keeps our members’ needs at the center of all of that she does.”

Gaskill-Hames joined Kaiser Permanente in 2016 and served in a progression of leadership roles in Northern California before moving to Southern California in 2022, including senior vice president and area manager for both Redwood City and Greater Southern Alameda, interim regional chief nurse executive, and senior vice president of hospital and health plan operations.

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Gaskill-Hames served in multiple hospital leadership roles, including president of Advocate Trinity Hospital in the Advocate Health Care network in Chicago.

Gaskill-Hames is an executive board member of the California Hospital Association and the Integrated Healthcare Association. She has also been recently appointed to the Business Cabinet for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

Carolina Region Youth Support Paine College Submitted by Dr. Debra Lowe, Director Carolina Region BOCEF Seventh Episcopal District BOCEF

This year’s theme for the Carolina Region Board of Christian Education and Formation (BOCEF) is “Bold Moves: Stepping Out and Moving Forward,” Deuteronomy 31:6. The Carolina Region Youth did just that when they traveled by motor coach from Greenville, SC, located in the Carolina Region, 7th Episcopal District, to Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, located in the 6th Episcopal District. Dr. Debra Lowe, Carolina Region BOCEF Director, and approximately 57 youth and chaperones took the two-hour bus trip during the Carolina Region Annual Conference to visit the campus and present a check for $5,000 to Paine College president, Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones. The Carolina Region includes North and South Carolina.

The youth and chaperones took a campus tour, led by current Paine students, and visited the beautiful Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. The chapel was named after Dr. John Wesley Gilbert, who was the first Paine student, the first graduate, and the first Black faculty member. Juniors and seniors met with enrollment staff and were given the opportunity to apply for on-site admission and scholarships. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal in the college cafeteria.

The BOCEF is grateful to Bishop James B. Walker, Presiding Prelate for the 7th Episcopal District; Elder Faye Houston, Winston-Salem/Greenville District; Elder Dr. Clifton Harris, Durham District, and Elder Jetson Maness, Charleston/Columbia District for their continued commitment to Christian Education. A special thanks goes to Rev. Omar Dykes for his support of the youth and children in the Carolina Region.

Paine College is a private, historically Black college supported by the CME Church through General Claims funds. Founded in 1882, the college was established to train Black teachers and preachers so they could address spiritual and educational needs of former slaves. It offers liberal arts undergraduate degrees in education and business administration. Current enrollment is approximately 300.

Make A Joyful Noise!!

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: Come before His presence with singing.” - Psalms 100:1-2 (KJV) On June 11, 2023, the Mass Choir of Douglas Memorial CME Church, Beaumont, Texas, celebrated their seventieth (70th) annual event. Over the years, the event has changed from a salad/tea, musicals with local soloists and groups, and talent and style shows. The church and the local community have always supported the event which allowed the choir not only to meet its annual financial goals, but also to lift the Lord up in song and praise.

This year, the Saturday before the Sunday Annual, a different but very special event was held. The choir members surprised Mary Mae Senegal Wingate when they honored her for more than 30 years of service as President with a brunch and musical.

Mrs. Wingate not only serves as president of the Douglas Memorial Mass Choir but also serves faithfully as a Stewardess, Trustee, member of the local Women’s Missionary Society, and of the I.J. Brooks Sunday School Class.

The Event was well attended by Church Members, family, community leaders, visitors and friends and a large contingent of her sorority sisters from Beaumont Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Mrs. Wingate’s favorite song, “How Great Thou Art” was sung by Ms. Bonnie Williams. Comments on her commitment to service were presented by Mrs. Michelle Turner, president of the Beaumont Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta , by Mass Choir first vicepresident, Mrs. Dessie Richard, and Reverend C . Ulysses Neal, Sr., Pastor of Douglas Memorial Church.

Mrs. Wingate’s genuine appreciation was evident as she received Accolades for her Church and Community involvement. She left with a heart full of love and bouquets of roses.

Cleaves Memorial Partners for Health Submitted by Anthony Hill

Cleaves Memorial CME Church, Denver, Colorado, partnered with 365 Health (formerly 9News Health) and hosted their first annual Health fair on April 15, 2023, in honor and observation of National Minority Health Month.

In April 2001, the National Minority Health Month Foundation launched the initiative in response to the Healthy People 2010 report. The focus of National Minority Health Month is to increase health awareness, while decreasing the health disparities faced by minorities.

365 Health was started in the late 1970’s

by John F. Brensike, a physician, while he was conducting research on heart disease at the National Institute of Health. As Dr. Brensike traveled the country conducting screenings for heart disease, he noted that persons in the communities wanted and needed additional screenings, and should have health education and followup. Since then, 365 Health has provided preventive health screenings and health

education to millions of Coloradans who are underserved. The stated mission of 365 Health is: 365 Health advances health awareness, providing people with the tools they need to take responsibility for their own health.

Cleaves' health fair offered free services that included blood pressure screening, diabetes screening, mental health screening, PAP smears, and several others. A host of volunteers and community organizations participated in the health fair, including the nurses of Colorado Springs, CO, Iota Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi, Sorority, Inc. Several other community organizations were also in attendance to provide resources for the community. One organization, Black Men Run (Denver, CO chapter), provided information on their mission, promoting healthy lifestyles among African American men. A local pharmacy provided the Bivalent COVID vaccine. Laboratory services were provided at a discounted rate, and vouchers were available for individuals if needed. First Lady Dr. La Tasha Bruner-Hill served as the Medical Director and Dr. Tracie Cullins-Clark served as the Site Supervisor for Cleaves' Health Fair.

Submissions Continued from previous page to health inequities, such as disproportionate rates of underlying health conditions like asthma or diabetes.” They further point out that these social injustices, systemic health inequities, and systemic social inequities were a part of longstanding racism and discriminatory policies.

Knowing these disparities, Dr. Bruner-Hill felt partnering with 365 Health was a way Cleaves can help decrease the disparities, educate the community, and hopefully start building health equity.

Each Sunday during Black History Month, Dr. La Tasha Bruner-Hill provided health information to the congregation regarding kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, the impact of these diseases in minority communities, and preventive measures. Dr. Tracie Cullins-Clark provided information on the Office of Minority Health (OMH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The OMH was created in 1986 to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations. Dr. Tracie Cullins-Clark reviewed the OMH website and resources that are available to the community.

Surviving in the Club No One Wants to Join Submitted by Marilyn D. Thomas

Note: This message is primarily directed to clergy couples but is applicable to ALL spouses - male and female. This is not a feel-good discussion but one that is necessary.

Today, there is an emphasis on self-care that is advocated for the general population, but the clergy is one profession that has historically neglected it. Often, spouses carry the huge load of family care while maintaining professional and other outside responsibilities and roles. However, when the unthinkable happens and the pastor transitions suddenly or after a prolonged illness while pastoring, the spouse is numbingly left to maneuver on in life with varying internal and external resources at their disposal. Countless books have been written to and by widows and widowers on life after the loss of a spouse, but being in the ministry, and particularly itinerant ministry, presents unique circumstances. It is critical for all married couples to plan for life prayerfully and strategically beyond the immediate present.

My beloved husband and I were still on our honeymoon after 41 years of marriage and we were planning our retirement. He published a book of the poems he wrote to me every year on our anniversary. The book - 30 years of HER: Reflections and Love Poems of a Happily Married Man captured our life-long love story. Tragically, I and the world lost this awesome servant of God, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and pastor after a 10-month battle with cancer. There are trigger moments that will probably last forever, and it still astounds me that he is physically not here. The memories and planning we did, however, allow me to slowly move forward (notice I said move forward, not move on, because you never move on).

The following tips to live by are a summary taken from the talk I presented at the New YorkWashington Region Ministers’ Spouses Widows/Widowers Department (MSWWD)’s Vesper service in 2023. I titled the discussion: Surviving in the Club No One Wants to Join. ➢ Always hold onto your personhood: You are a unique individual – the same individual that attracted your spouse. Maintain your interests, educational and professional pursuits, and friends outside your spouse and the church. There are seasons of life where you are consumed with parenting, caregiving, church, and work roles, etc., but hold onto whatever gives YOU a sense of personal self-well-being. This takes nothing from the marriage, but only enriches your relationship. ➢ Get your business in order: Know your finances and insurance and run the household business together. It is tragic when you do not know the financial status of your own home. Splitting and sharing household expenses is normal but know what the family resources are and where documents are stored. Put your paperwork in order. ➢ Get your own home/property: Living in church property can be a blessing, but it is wise to have your own home somewhere. Regardless of how kind and generous the church may be to a grieving spouse and family; the church membership is also grieving while needing to prepare for the incoming pastor. You have limited time to move out of the parsonage. ➢ Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual self: When you lose your spouse, your entire existence is traumatized. Keep your medical appointments, exercise, see a therapist, cry, scream. Do whatever you need to do for relief to get through the moment. Also, if children are involved, get them support. Often, when children are involved, parents neglect to care for 24

Submissions themselves. But remember airline take-off flight instructions - in case of an emergency, put the oxygen mask on yourself first, then place the oxygen mask on the child. In reality - you do not know what you need as you walk through a haze of bewilderment while taking care of the endless details of life. But you must take care of yourself whatever that looks like as you continuously work through your grief and new life. ➢ Be kind to yourself: Whatever you accomplish in a given moment and hour, that is a victory of moving forward. ➢ Embrace silence, and others should shut up: Accept that people mean well but often do not know what to say. It is awkward and scary because for certain, one day separation will happen to them whichever spouse goes first. The ministry of presence can be the best support, and silence may be what is needed and appreciated. ➢ Acknowledge the footprints in the sand: You have no footprints of your own, I didn’t and still do not. Through the years, I always prayerfully and clearly told God that I wanted to go first.

And I almost did after a prolonged serious illness. But here I am, and my beloved husband is physically gone after a short illness. Go figure! The Lord is in control of all matters in our lives and is definitely carrying each of us through the sand. At the same time, in spite of all the strength that the Lord provides, it is okay to be angry with God through grieving. No one can tell you how long or short a time you will grieve because no one was in your relationship. It is individual, painful, and in your own time. Leaning on God and great memories are blessings and part of the on-going healing. (Dealing with anger is another article discussion). ➢ Last: I recommend two final resources.

1. GriefShare: GriefShare is a 13-week ministry program in which you can participate in person or virtually. This is for the loss of any loved ones, family, children, friends, etc.

This is not a religious book, but she was spot on for me. I listened to the audio version because I could not sit and read, so audio books have been a blessing.

Remember- it is okay you do not have it all together-we never do. In closing, these are my thoughts on Surviving in the Club No One Wants to Join.

Friendship CME Receives Civil Rights Trail Marker Submitted by Naderica Adams Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Office of Tourism unveiled the 12th marker on the Louisiana Civil Rights Trail on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Friendship CME Church in Lisbon, Louisiana.

“Friendship CME Church is nestled in a small town where one would think not much happens. During the 1960s and early 1970s, plans affecting growth and change in Claiborne Parish were envisioned and strategies developed during sessions of the Claiborne Parish Civic League held at the quiet church,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.

According to Evelyn Lewis, the site nominator for Friendship CME Church, Friendship CME Church was the only church in the parish that opened its doors and welcomed local activists. It was an integral part of

the Civil Rights Movement that took place in Claiborne Parish as well as in north Louisiana. It not only served as a meeting place in the parish, but it also was the place where a Deacons for Defense Chapter was created.

Evelyn’s significant contributions include her research completed, interviews conducted, and writing that led to the Friendship CME Church being listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 and its being added to the Louisiana Civil Rights Trail in 2023.

She hopes that her work will inspire the current and future generations to learn more about the efforts and sacrifices made by activists of the past who lived in Claiborne Parish and other regions of the state.

Evelyn Lewis is a Louisiana native who grew up in the Friendship community, which located in Lisbon (Claiborne Parish). She is the daughter of the late George W. Lewis III and Louise Bursey Lewis. She has a brother, Steve Lewis who was extremely instrumental in assist with the completion of this project.

Friendship CME Church is on the National Register for Historic Places, joining the prestigious list in 2016. Its period of significance is 1965-1973 which reflects

Submissions the years that the Friendship CME Church made its major contributions to the civil rights movement in Claiborne Parish, which began with creation of the Claiborne Parish Civic League and ended with the organization's last major battles with desegregation of local government (police jury), law enforcement, school board, schools, public library and restaurants in the parish.

The pastor of Friendship CME Church, Rev. Naderica Adams, stated that she is proud to pastor an amazing body of believers and looks forward to continuing the goal of moving the Friendship CME Church forward.

The Friendship CME Church has been moving in the past 2 years by holding programs in the community where 100 or more have been in attendance.

Friendship CME Church played a pivotal role in the Louisiana Civil Rights Movement. It was the only Claiborne Parish church to open its doors for strategy meetings and voter registration drives. The church had prominent community leaders in its congregation, including Frederick Douglass Lewis, a pioneer of civil rights activities. He served as president of both the

Claiborne Parish Civic League and the Homer Chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice, an armed self-defense group founded by black veterans to protect civil rights activists and their families. In 1965, the church hosted mass meetings, desegregation tests, voter registration drives, and non-violent workshops. These efforts successfully desegregated the Claiborne Parish Police Jury, law enforcement, school board, schools, public library, and restaurants.

The Louisiana Civil Rights Trail continues to recognize and bring to life Louisiana’s role in the modern civil rights movement. The markers tell the significant role Louisiana played in shaping American history during the 1950s and 60s and draws attention to the courage and commitment of the trailblazers of the movement.

The Louisiana Civil Rights Trail brings together the events of the 1950s and 1960s that placed the state of Louisiana at the center of the national Civil Rights Movement and narrates the compelling stories and experiences of the people who dedicated themselves and their lives to making civil rights real in Louisiana.

SENIOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & RECOGNITION PROGRAM Submitted by Rev. Dr. Jerry D. Woodfork, Sr. Presiding Elder, Atlanta-Rome District

On June 4, 2023, Presiding Elder Jerry D. Woodfork, Sr. of the Atlanta-Rome District of the Georgia North Region of the Sixth Episcopal District held his annual senior recognition event. As in years past, the event was hosted by Rev. Albert Lee III and the College Park CME Church located in the City of South Fulton, Georgia. Additionally, London Bradley, Sr., son of Olivia Bradley, has underwriten the event each year.

In 2019, Elder Woodfork thought it necessary and appropriate to recognize the district’s older congregants. Enlisting the help of Brother Billy McFarland of College Park CME Church, together they initiated a search to identify those who were 100 years old or older. However, since few lived to be 100, they decided to lower the age to 90, as living to be 90 was significant longevity and a true blessing from God. The thought was that they could be deemed “super seniors” and should be recognized and acknowledged.

The first senior program was observed on June 2, 2019, and drew many accolades and much praise throughout the 6th District. Entering 2020, we were stymied with a COVID-19 pandemic. This put a hold on several planned activities that were to be held on an annual basis. Accordingly, the 2020 and 2021 events had to be postponed and cancelled because the COVID pandemic caused restrictions on gatherings. However, Elder Woodfork was determined to continue the senior recognitions when conditions and circumstances would allow.

With the advent of vaccines, social distancing, and other safety measures, Elder Woodfork decided that 2022 was safe enough to again acknowledge and recognize seniors, and with the decline in pandemic restrictions, an event was planned. However, this time the designation of “super seniors” was changed to include those 80 years of age and older.

Submissions With the additional help of Sister Karen Searcy of the Elder’s staff and the Elder’s sister, Sister Olivia Woodfork Bradley, thirty-one (31) churches in the Atlanta-Rome District were notified to identify and present the names of their 80-year-old and 80-plus members. As a result of their efforts, 122 seniors in 15 churches and 18 “super seniors” on the Atlanta-Rome District were identified and notified of their pending recognition. Of those, over 120 seniors were highlighted and honored.

The 2022 Senior Celebration was held June 5, 2022. Each senior was given a “Certificate of Membership into the 80th and Over Birthday Club” and a monetary gift card, and the honored seniors were provided dinner in a special section set up for them. The names of the seniors and their churches were printed in the program bulletin. It was a grand event!

The 2023 event was as spectacular as the previous ones. Again, over 120 seniors aged 80 and older were highlighted and acknowledged with a specially designed tee shirt and a take-away brunch. The tee shirts were unique and were held in high regard by the recipients and observers. The tee shirts were navy blue, highlighted and lettered in bright yellow and white. The front of the shirt identified the wearer as a member of the 80 and over club. The back of the shirt contained a picture of the pastor and the church to which the wearer belonged. Also, on the back was a listing of the other members of that specific church who were also aged 8o or over. Therefore, the wearer could proudly wear their shirt which displayed the church of their membership and its Pastor. It also shows its affiliation with a denomination which values its seniors. Because it was valued, some recipients suggested displaying their shirt by framing it or making a pillow cover.

The 2022 and 2023 celebrations included a surprise appreciation for Presiding Elder Woodfork which was led by the ministerial alliance. Although Bishop Thomas and Dr. Louise Baker Brown could not be present, they supported both the 2022 and 2023 events with their love and monetary gifts. Elder Woodfork is highly thankful for how Bishop and Dr. Brown, the ministerial alliance, and the people of the Atlanta-Rome District showed their love for him.

Individual readers and/or other districts are strongly encouraged to implement the same or a similar event. It would be deeply appreciated by seniors to be recognized for their longevity and commitment to the CME Church.

Inauguration of the Catherine McNair-Forte’ Scholarship Fund Submitted by Cathy Forte’, Church Secretary

So often, we fail to give a person their flowers while they are alive to appreciate them, especially our “seasoned” servants. In April 2023, Dr. Evelyn L. Parker, PhD, broke the mold and chose to bring to fruition the vision that God placed on her heart. Dr. Parker shared her vision with Pastor Burell Lee, pastor of Washington Chapel CME Church in Gulfport, Mississippi. With Pastor Lee’s blessing and unwavering support, the vision became a reality. It was on July 9, 2023, that the Catherine McNair-Forte’ Scholarship Fund came into existence. The scholarship will benefit high school and college students who are members of Washington Chapel CME Church in their academic endeavors. A total of $1,801.00 was received to initiate the scholarship fund.

To commemorate this auspicious occasion, a special celebration service was held with many of Mrs. Forte’s family members, friends, former student, and church family in attendance. All too often scholarships are established to honor the deceased. It was evident that everyone was grateful for the opportunity to honor someone who is still in the earth realm.

Catherine McNair-Forte’ is the oldest member of Washington Chapel. At the age of 93, she still attends worship service on a regular basis. She is a retired teacher with 31 years of service educating children in the Carroll and Harrison County School Districts.

As we assembled, the atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement. Catherine was escorted into the sanctuary by her grandson, Dwight McNair, Sr., and seated in a gold throne chair surrounded by an array of lights. Dr. Parker served with poise and elegance as the Mistress of Ceremony. The program participants included Pastor Burell Lee (prayer), Bro. Roy Freeman and Bro. Jonathan Smith (scripture readings), Pastor Donnie Farmer (tribute from a former student), Little Miss Addisyn Brown (sacred dance), Bianca Smith (eldest great-granddaughter, family tribute), Minister Jacqueline “Jackie” Echols-Lee (plaque presentation), Dr. Frances Washington (introduction of speaker), and Sis. Denise Otis (decorator). The guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Sonnie Washington, retired CME pastor. He delivered a very inspiring message reminding us that we have a purpose in life and that we should be faithful stewards over what God has given to us. The celebration service culminated with a fellowship meal. Everyone felt that it was fitting to honor Mrs. Forte’ who was not only instrumental in the field of education, but in her local church as well.

Catherine was born on June 15, 1930, in Bassfield, MS, to the late Rev. J.A. “Johnnie” McNair and Maggie Magee McNair. She is a graduate of Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, MS, where she received a BS Degree in Education. Catherine joined Washington Chapel in 1966 under the leadership of her father. During her many years of stewardship, she served in the following capacities: Church 32

Submissions Secretary; Sunday School Secretary; President, Vice President and Secretary of the Senior Choir; President of the Missionary Society; Trustee; Steward; member of the Board of Christian Education; Sunday School Superintendent; and on various program committees. She also served as the Assistant Secretary for the South Mississippi Singing Convention, which was comprised of local choirs in the community. For many years, she represented the church as a delegate to the South Mississippi Annual Conference (now Mississippi-South) in addition to the meetings in the Meridian District which became the Gloster-Hattiesburg District.

It is Washington Chapel’s goal and determination to ensure the Catherine McNair-Forte’ Scholarship Fund lives on, just as the many contributions that she made to the world and the CME Church will live on.

In the words of her favorite poem, “If a task is once begun, never leave it, till it’s done. Be thy labor great or small, do it well or not at all.”

WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR CHURCH? Submitted by Rev. Dr. Clarence C. Buchanan Retired C.M.E. Clergyman, Southaven, Mississippi

In the year of 1962, two young preachers came before the North Mississippi Annual Conference, the sainted Bishop Norris S. Curry, the Ministerial Committee, and the Conference Delegates. They were the late Rev. T. G. Isom, and the Rev. Dr. Clarence C. Buchanan. After the morning session, the Bishop asked the two young men to have lunch with him.

The conversation during the meal consisted of the Bishop asking questions and the two of us trying to give answers as best as we could. One of the questions was about our “call” to Ministry and another one was about what the existing “atmosphere” was like when God “called” us.

I recall part of my response was that I was attending the Leadership Training School on the campus of Mississippi Industrial College, and I had been struggling with “the call” to which I felt God was leading me.

Then I heard a message preached by the late Rev. Dr. Isaiah Scipio, Jr., one of the leading Pastors at that time.

His subject was, “God Is Calling You To What?” After that message, I answered the call right there in that atmosphere of a Leadership Training School. And now, some 60 years later, I am still following that amazing “call” of God on my life.

As I reflect back over some of the persons God has called and the atmosphere out of which He called them, I am reminded of the following: (1) The call of Abraham (Genesis 12) who was told to leave the atmosphere of father, home, country, and kindred. He was told to leave it all and answer God's call.

(2) He called Moses (Exodus 3) out of the House of Jethro, the Priest of Midian, from caring for his flock, and God called him while he was standing on Holy Ground (That’s atmosphere!).

(3) He called Samuel (1st Samuel 1) as an answer to his mother’s prayer while he was in the house of Eli the Priest (That’s atmosphere!).

(4) He called Isaiah (Isaiah 6) while standing in the Temple in the same year that King Uzziah died (That’s atmosphere!).

(5) He called John the Baptist in the wilderness (Luke 3).

(6) He called Jesus while John was baptizing in the Jordan (Matthew 3 and Luke 3).

It would seem that all of these “callings” were linked together by a common thread and that is “ATMOSPHERE”. So I believe that Bishop Curry was on to something in saying, “You must create an atmosphere in which God can call.” I witnessed this in the last session of the North-East Mississippi Annual Conference after one of the veteran Pastors, Rev. Doris Alexander, had preached a powerful sermon. Bishop Kenneth W. Carter extended the invitation to Christian Discipleship, then he extended a call to those who needed prayer, and finally he extended a call to those who wanted to acknowledge their call to the ministry.

Submissions Yes, atmosphere is vital for the call of God on a person’s life. It started me to thinking: “What would happen if in all of our church settings we would create an atmosphere in which God could call persons into His Ministry?”

What if God called a person to preach during a prayer meeting/Bible Study?

What if God called a person during choir practice?

What if God called a person to preach during a stewards’ meeting right there in the finance room?

What if God called some Phyllis H. Bedford Young Adult to preach right there in the Missionary Planning Meeting?

What if in the Winter Meeting just before the Presiding Elders gave their reports someone rises and says, “I’ve been called to preach.”?

What if in all of our Annual Conferences and Leadership Training Schools time would be given to persons whom God might be calling to respond.

What if in the General Conference, just before the election of Bishops, the invitation was extended to those who want to answer the call of God to preach His Gospel? WOW! I believe that God is still calling persons to Ministry today if only we would create the atmosphere. In 1st Kings 19 we read that the Prophet Elijah needed to hear the voice of God while he was in the wilderness ready to die. God sent an angel to touch him saying, “Arise and eat” (Verse 5). There we see the Prophet of God in a cave and the word of the Lord comes to him (Verse 9). He is told to go and stand upon the mount and see the Lord as He passes by. The wind blows, but God is not in the wind. An earthquake comes, but God is not in the earthquake. The fire comes, but God is not in the fire. Then comes a still small voice. Yes, it was there that he heard the voice of God speaking to him saying, “What doest thou here, Elijah?”

Can you hear the still small voice of God speaking to all of us today telling us to create atmospheres in which He can “call” all of His Spiritual Gifts to operate in His churches as we seek to “Be Bold” and “Face Now” in this present age?

Fanny J. Crosby reminds us that: “Jesus is tenderly calling thee home, Calling today, Calling today.

Why from the sunshine of love wilt thou roam, Farther and farther away?

Calling today! Calling today! Jesus is calling, is tenderly calling today.”

Let us strive to create atmospheres wherein the Spirit of the Living God might call each of us to our various Ministries and may we gladly respond: “Here am I, Lord; send me.” AMEN.

THE GOAL IN PAYING CONFERENCE APPORTIONMENTS Submitted by Pastor Lydia Evelyn Spragin, Esquire New Destiny Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Cleveland-Pittsburgh District

The question is often asked, “Why do we have to pay conference claims?”, or “Don’t they know that all of the money we send to them could be used to maintain our church buildings and grounds?” [Whoever they or them are!), or simply, the exasperated, “I don’t know what the bishops do with all of my money?” Well, the answer to all of these questions could be answered with the flippant: When you joined the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, you promised to abide by, be governed under, and support the general church in its mission and ministry by whatever means passed by the General Conference as it amends the Discipline from time to time, so keep your word and “pay up.” But the rock-solid reason is not flippant and deserves serious consideration.

The reason we pay apportionments (or the colloquial term “Conference claims”) is because we are a missional church with a vision. "The mission of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is to be disciples of Jesus the Christ by serving individuals, communities and the world as the representative, loving presence of God and as witnesses to God’s salvation and grace."1 The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church uses apportionments to support the work of the church and its ministries, to preserve and reclaim monuments of African-American heritage (e.g., Zion Cemetery and Collins Chapel Hospital), and to provide funding for outreach, children’s ministries, and support to organizations which promote equality, social justice and reform, economic empowerment, and education and training.

Generally, apportionments accomplish more than an individual member or church because apportionments encompass a broader base. Note the word apportionment. Each church is apportioned or assigned a part of the financing of the church, ministries, and outreach. Each portion is needed to make the whole ministry picture complete. Bishop James C. King, Jr. is renowned for saying, “much money, much ministry, little money, little ministry.” The magnitude of the visible ministry of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is directly proportional to the amount of cooperative, collective, and connectional giving received.

The CME Church is adamant about preserving African- American history. Thus, the CME Church has revitalized buildings and grounds, e.g., the historic Collins Chapel Hospital has been repurposed, renovated, and re-opened as a “safe-haven” for the homeless and renamed “Room in the Inn Memphis.”2 Thus, apportionments are used to connect the local church to the broader, connectional church, which serves, ministers, and empowers people not only in our local community but also in the world community.

The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church embraces members not only in the United States but also in Jamaica, Haiti, and Africa (Liberia, Ghana, Benin, Togo, and Nigeria, which comprise the 10th Episcopal District; and DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa, which comprise the 11th District). [Our ministry in other countries in Africa and the Caribbean are associated with other episcopal districts.] The presence of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church not only brings the gospel but also schools such as the LL Reddick School of Theology 1 2

Submissions & Leadership Studies (founded by Bishop K. L. Adjei), which is purposed to train CME Ministers and other leaders of the CME Church.3 The vision of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is to be a transforming church for Jesus the Christ within a changing world.4 The basic idea behind apportionments is that local congregations pool a portion of the money they collect to accomplish outreach and touch those who are often known as the poor and the needy, the homeless, the downtrodden, the less fortunate, the addicted, the afflicted, the abused, the misused, the forgotten, the lonely, and the least of these. By our generous collective giving we are able to go beyond the ability of an individual congregation (such as operating a college, hospital, or a seminary), provide programs and services that are effective and efficient, and achieve a measure of excellence that we are unable to do individually, e.g., support the NAACP, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (of which we have Lane College, Paine College, Texas College, Miles College, and Phillips School of Theology), and develop resources for Sunday School, Christian Education and Spiritual Formation. Evangelism, and foreign missions.

Methodists yearn to give a helping hand instead of a handout to those who marginally attend church or who may only come to know God through our unselfish generosity in meeting their present needs. While it is true that a certain portion is for salaries, we would certainly hope that each person who is salaried by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has the purpose and attitude of Jesus, the Christ, in fulfilling His mission which was “to serve and not to be served.” (Mark 10:45) We look to our episcopal leaders to be the visionary prototypes of the Great Commandment (Matthew 22: 37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-19; Luke 24: 44-49; The Gospel of John 20:19-23; and Acts 1:8). We expect our episcopal leaders to prophesy, dream dreams, and see visions (Joel 2:28) that will lead us not only into the future of the universal church but also bring to light the present needs of the body of Christ.

We look for our connectional officers to exemplify what it means to be a servant-leader who is focused on building the pillars of discipleship, evangelism, and missions with welcoming and outstretched arms to all who have "a desire to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins."5 While it is necessary that we develop resources independent of conference apportionments to meet the needs of the missional church, it is the system that we have in place at this time. We should not begrudge our assessments as burdens, but delight in the fact that we have been asked to share the load of our fellowman – to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. These verses come to mind: Hebrews 13:3: “Remember those in prison as if you were bound with them, and those who are mistreated as if you were suffering with them." Matthew 25:36: “I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Ephesians 4:11-13: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” These are the bedrocks upon which Christian ministry is founded and upon which we expend our resources.

LET ME WASH YOUR FEET Submitted by Reporter Geraline Ray On January 1, 2023, I beheld an extraordinary ritual performed by Rev. Karl Williams, Pastor of Hickory Hill CME Church, Pittsburg, Texas, and his wife, Rev. Shalanda Williams, Pastor of Mt. Lebanon CME Church, Pittsburg, Texas and Greenville/Texarkana Prayer Coordinator. They washed feet!

We read in the Bible where Jesus washed the feet of his disciples to show his servanthood. These pastors wanted to establish that they were servants, first, and then whatever other titles that maybe added to their name. Rev. Karl established that fact by providing a free lunch of barbecued ribs, chicken, and sausage with salad, delicious cheesecake and drinks for both churches served by him and his wife.

The foot-washing was held at Hickory, with none other than our own Presiding Elder, Rev. Diana Casteel, bringing the message. Each person had their own foot-washing bin, fresh water for each washing, and their own towels for drying the feet. Participating in this performance helps us to understand the response of the disciples when Jesus washed their feet. It felt weird to have someone other than, perhaps, your spouse, wash your feet. Not everyone was brave enough to allow this, since it is really an intimate thing to do. Plus, I wonder how many people would be willing to wash their spiritual brother or sister’s feet.

Pastor Karl Williams has a motto: “Two Churches, One God, One Team.” Since he has a church that meets on first and third Sundays, he usually fellowships with Mt. Lebanon, his wife’s church, on the other Sundays. We are delighted to have him spend that time with us!

Due to a plethora of factors, including systemic racism, Black Americans find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide. Because of systemic racism, Black American households earn only about half as much on average as their white counterparts. For many working-class African American families, home internet costs are simply too high. So, why is internet access so expensive? According to research, there is little competition among internet service providers across the United States. Almost forty percent of American households live in an area with only one or two internet service providers. Without competition, these companies can charge whatever they want for their services. This leeway is a serious issue in Black communities because internet service providers have underinvested in low-income, minority communities, assuming they will earn large profits in wealthier, whiter areas. Consequently, predominantly Black communities have less digital infrastructure and slower internet speeds. Yet, Black Americans are often charged the same price on their monthly internet bills. This discriminatory practice is called “digital redlining.”

Other factors contribute to the racial digital divide. Signing up for broadband often requires a credit check, which becomes a barrier for low-income families. Achieving educational and financial success in the 21st century requires internet access. About thirty-one percent of Black Americans do not have a home computer, and thirty-eight percent lack high-speed internet access, or broadband, at home. Hence, about one in three Black adults are offline! Although the majority of Black Americans do have mobile internet, smartphones are not enough to bridge the digital divide.

In addition to increasing internet access, efforts to achieve digital equity must include a digital skills component. About seventy percent of the Black community are unprepared with digital skills, affecting their employability. As more work moves to remote formats, Black and Hispanic workers, without any intervention, could be locked out of eighty-six percent of jobs by 2045. Digital literacy has increasingly become a critical component of elementary and high school curricula. Black Americans, particularly, must be equipped with internet access and digital skills to thrive in today’s technological society. Upward economic mobility, educational success, and health outcomes depend on one’s ability to get online.

There is good news! The current administration’s Digital Equity Act will provide $14.2 billion to all states to promote digital inclusion. These funds include the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which offers eligible low-income families discounts on their monthly internet service. Providers cannot deny service based on an individual’s poor credit score rating or if their households’ services were disconnected in the past due to nonpayment. Applicants also do not need to produce a social security number.

The ACP is a relatively new initiative, and many people still need to learn how to sign up. Organizations like Community Tech Network (CTN) host workshops to help people enroll in the program and train nonprofit and community leaders to become ACP enrollment specialists. This training allows them to become experts in helping people get online. In addition, groups, including the Black Churches 4 Digital Equity coalition, have worked tirelessly to increase ACP enrollment. Currently, over 11.5 million households are already enrolled in the ACP. Homeless individuals are also eligible so long as they can state where they reside at night, whether in a shelter or on a street corner.

Announcing the Continuation of the 2023-2024 Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education (CCPE) Program The Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program provides an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations who desire to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, January 10-12, 2024 PST Pastors Conference, Atlanta, GA Monthly meetings via Zoom – TWO TIMES PER MONTH ON FRIDAY EVENING Exact Dates TBD at Orientation Final Evaluations & Graduation, at the Connectional Youth/Young Adult Conference The student is responsible for all of his/her travel, lodging and food costs at the in-person educational sessions.

The focus of this CPE program is on ministry in the congregation. Participants must have an approved place of ministry in order to complete the required hours in ministry each month of the program. The recommendation of a presiding bishop or supervising pastor is required as well. In addition to the ministry hours, attendance at all sessions is required.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology through the Office of the CME Endorser. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $550, which includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $150 deposit once accepted into the program and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
