Earth Day During the 2022 General Conference, a resolution (2022-05-02) titled "Earth Day Resolution" was presented for consideration by the deliberative body. This resolution made note of the fact that the Apostle's Creed affirms God as the maker of heaven and earth, concluded that human beings are therefore in a position of stewardship, and in observing, Whereas, Earth Day is not observed as a Connectional Day in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Be it resolved that Earth Day Observance be added to Chapter 42, Connectional Days and Observances, and shall state: Each local church will observe Connectional Earth Day on a day within the month of April each year." (From the Book of Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Resolutions, Prepared for the 39th Quadrennial Session & 40th General Conference Held Editor on June 25 – July 01, 2022 (Department of Publications, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 2022)) After strong arguments both for and against the resolution, the vote was to not pass it. However, this does mean the issue is not important to the church, or that the negative human impact on the planet does not affect the church. Just this week, on Wednesday, September 21, the United States Senate a bipartisan vote of approval to an international treaty, the 2016 Kigali Amendment, that calls for a reduction in the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a common refrigerant found in refrigerators and air conditioners. Most of us are aware of the high cost of changing refrigerant; our church buildings are no exception. Further, on its September 22, 2022, broadcast, the National Public Radio (NPR) radio show, "All Things Considered," not only announced this historic vote but, in another segment, also addressed a financial impact of climate change. That segment concerned the politics and legalities surrounding investment accounts and the firms that handle them. Several states have enacted, and many others are pondering, laws that limit investment firms from considering environmental issues, among other things, "when deciding where to put their clients' money." The rationale is that the consideration of these interests does not produce the highest returns for investors. How might this affect our connectional or retirement plan investments? How might your own personal portfolio be affected? Tangentially, a third segment presented an answer to the question, "How much water do you really need?" which spoke to the general intake or overconsumption of water during physical activity. These news items show the importance of climate change discussions not just for future generations, but also for the present age.

Earth Day is not a federal holiday in the U.S. but is an annual event that has been observed yearly on April 22, beginning in 1970. As I observed the debate in the general conference, I thought: What shall be done about Earth Day? What does it say when the church is silent? Is the church truly silent? How can the voice of the church be known, heard? What will it say? I concluded that instead of enacting a law requiring the observance of yet another connectional day, it might be better to include this in an updated version of our "Social Creed," and then, as I have attempted to do in the churches I have served as pastor, spend some time emphasizing and studying what that document says about and to our church. The desired outcome of an informed and active congregation may then potentially be achieved with greater success because the emphasis will be placed on ongoing education and ministry, rather than on the singular fulfillment of a dreaded obligation.

Not just National but a Global Crisis!

It began for us in December of 2021, when all deliveries of paper were delayed. We were informed that there was a national paper shortage. And like many of you who have called our office over the past two or three weeks, there was a sense of doubt. “No that couldn’t be true” or “who has ever heard of such?”. Well, since that time and to the present, a believer has been “made out of me”.

Beyond what many will consider or believe, there is not just a national paper shortage but a global shortage which makes us ask “Why?’ or:

What Exactly Is Going on?

A few key events are contributing to the ongoing shortage. Issues from 2021—such as raw pulp pricing increases, mill closings, and rising transportation costs—continue to carry over into the new year. Prior to the COVID pandemic, several large domestic paper mills planned to convert to packaging material production, and during the pandemic, some mills navigated the shortage by switching from paper to packaging, producing cardboard, kraft papers, and other materials to cater to increased online shopping demands. UPM pulp and paper mill strikes in Finland also had an impact on the market, limiting the availability of lightweight and medium weight coated papers primarily used for magazine and catalog production. The Russia-Ukraine war is causing supply chain blockages and heightening the cost of gas and freight as a result, since Russia is a major fuel supplier to countries around the world. Russia is also major exporter of uncoated paper to the European market, and the newly implemented bans on Russian goods will contribute to an additional deficit of supply.

The effects have trinkled down now to us. While the shortage has been on the minds and lips of printers for months, the supply was simply slow. But now slow does not describe the situation which we have been dealing with since before the General Conference. We have used every “skid” of paper which we could get our hands on to print The Christian Index. And as of the writing of this article, there is not a skid of paper on the publishing house floor. We await a response from our supplier to inform us that maybe one will be available in the next week or two. Normally there is at least one of the four different types of paper we customarily use on the floor waiting for a reason to be used, but not today and maybe not “Right now, no one knows when the great paper shortage will come to an end because our industry next week. We have no idea when the shortage will end, and the supply has truly never seen a shortage of this magnitude chain will return to normal. So, like many others whose job it is to print, I before. supply coated sheets. This is good news, but relief will not be immediate as paper shipments from Finnish mills take twelve weeks to reach US printers. The transition many mills have made from paper to packaging is also not so easily reversed; most companies have put an enormous amount of time, money, and resources into making the switch. Some printers and marketing businesses are ordering more paper now to prepare for the continued projected shortage, speculating that the situation is likely to remain the same through the end of 2022. These speculative purchases for future needs are also adding to the short-term shortage of paper needed to print jobs now and in the second quarter. We are hopeful that by the end of 2022 or early 2023, things may level out as lead times reduce and supply and demand approach equilibrium.”

“Phishing!”

In recent months, our churches and pastors have been the target of scammers who seek to take advantage of the sincerity and radical generosity that typify our churches. According to a March 16 article by Instant Church Online, “The schemes go beyond typical “phishing” attempts to what is known as “whaling”: sending fraudulent communications that appear to be from a church’s pastor or a denomination’s leader, in other words, from the “big fish.” Indeed, we have seen Scam Alerts from Bishop Kenneth W. Carter and Bishop James B. Walker, just to name a few. (Thank you, CIT, for getting the Scam Alerts out so quickly.)

Usually, the scams will come in the form of messages (oftentimes emails but sometimes texts and phone calls) with urgent requests to “SEND MONEY NOW” to help a person or family member in need. They will even ask for support for local disasters (most recently the water crisis in Jackson, MS). To appear authentic, the scammers often include a leader’s photo and/or email signature, which scammers can easily obtain online.

Because we all want to be good stewards of our personal and churches’ funds, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from becoming victims of phishing and whaling schemes. Below are a few measures we can take to protect ourselves: Never use wire transfers or other digital payment methods to pay strangers, no matter what reason they give. If you do not know them, do not send them your money.

Alert members to fraudulent activities ahead of time. Include a sentence or two in the church newsletter or bulletin or make an announcement before or after worship. Better yet, make sure members are receiving communications from CME Church Communications. It is the church’s policy to notify connectional members regarding scams that target the leadership and ministries of the CME Church. & When in doubt, ask! Tell church members if they ever have questions or concerns about a request, they should contact the leader directly. The Christian Index has a CME Connectional Directory at the end of the publication with contact information. Keep the contact information on file.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New In the Gospel of Luke (Luke 8:4-16), Jesus shares the parable and shows the importance of causing the crowd to hear, understand, and respond.

Jesus allowed his disciples to experience, in his Galilean ministry, the advancement and expansion of the Kingdom of God. The church must return to a theology that helps people deal with their life experiences.

Clergy and laity must understand that the purpose of the church has been to seek out and reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ and to offer hope. To do this effectively, clergy and laity must understand the need for evangelism. Evangelism can be the arm of God in society, seeking human participation and reaching those who need Christ. It begins with a belief in God then continues to build and grow the church, church community, and other institutions by faith sharing.

God’s word and our work will produce a harvest according to the Parable of the Sower. We must expect a harvest and not inspect the work of others. We must look for good fruit from our ministry efforts.

It is vitally important that each group of people is represented in evangelism. The local church must begin to affect the communities they are a part of and not allow anything less than diversity. The church should mirror the community in which we serve. Often this is not the case, partially because of the lack of evangelism training material in the local church. The best efforts in evangelism do not try to duplicate but to create space for authentic evangelism.

One of the early fathers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Joseph A. Johnson, Jr., was the thirty-fourth Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. He writes in his book, Local Church and Lay Evangelism, “The local Church must be a training institution in which the members are taught basic facts about the polity, the doctrines, and the history of the church. The local church must be a witnessing institution in that its members must constantly feel the need and urge to tell others about the good news of God.” Bishop Johnson’s argument, made in 1976, showed the intentionality and urgency of the CME Church then and now.

If the local church would have taken seriously the call of the laity to live the purpose of evangelism, maybe the church could advance the cause of Christ. The new quadrennial theme suggests it is time to see the church thriving and not just surviving. This growth through living out the theme to BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New will be made clear in evangelism, which could produce the necessity for church growth, church planting, and church revitalization. Are you up for the task and heavy lifting, intentional faith development, effective witnessing, and soul-winning as being a part of a ministry that advances the body of Christ?

AS LAITY, WE MUST HAVE THE BOLDNESS TO SEE BEYOND OUR CHURCH WALLS: What is Christian boldness? For some, the expression invokes images of bravado, boasting, and stride. For others, boldness can signify a vague sense of courage and confidence in facing opposition.

In the first part of Acts 3, Peter heals a crippled beggar who had laid at the temple gate since he was a child, for he had never walked. The man asked for money or goods as was customary during this period for those who were poor and lame.

"Then Peter said, 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk'" (Acts 3:6). The disabled man took Peter's hand, stood up, and then leaping, he entered the temple praising God. The people who saw the lame man walking were filled with wonder and amazement at how this man was now able to walk.

Boldness does not always equal the act or mindset of being hasty or reckless. On the contrary, it requires courage to press on through our feelings of trepidation, the unknown, and fear and ultimately do what we know is right.

In the case of this disabled man, I am sure that he had been approached by many with a cure for his disability. However, all had failed. Here Peter instructs the man to step out on faith, be bold and seek Jesus Christ for what he needs. This man had a decision to make; (i) to continue in his current situation, remain hopeless and continue to beg for money, or (ii) to have the courage/boldness to take Peter's hand, follow his instructions, and believe that this time God would show favor in his life.

As laity, how do we cultivate this same boldness when confronted with opposition, uncertainty, and complacency? How do we see past life's disappointments, questionable faith, and stagnate church congregations?

1 Corinthians 12:27 says, "All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it." You are the church. We are the church. People are the church. Even if we genuinely know the church is more than a building, do we always think of the church beyond our four walls and outside our congregation?

In the best-seller book, “An Altar in the World” by author Barbara Brown Taylor says, "What happens to the rest of the world when we build four walls–even four gorgeous walls–cap them with a steepled roof, and designate that, the House of God . . . "What happens to the people who never show up in our houses of God? When we view the church as Christ's united body, it becomes less about receiving and more about giving.” We must understand that people are looking for more than just conversation; they want to see changed lives in the people talking to them.

First, let us check our fear or hesitation- we must have a bold and new sense of confidence and enthusiasm that will hopefully motivate us to reach outside our comfort zones.

Second, it's not about building a church or membership, but it's about building relationships and letting people see God's goodness and mercy through you.

Third, we need to be A catalyst for transformation—a call to action for the laity to begin reconnecting with our communities. Our Christian Fellowships must lead the way in fostering these relationships.

One way of demonstrating this transformation can be in behavior or methods like "Be the Church/Show the Church Sunday," where maybe after a Sunday service, the congregation goes out into their neighborhood to perform Community Service. For example, the service can be giving out food and water or cleaning up a street or area where the community can see God's people in action. This approach of how to spend a Sunday afternoon may not appeal to many or fit the mold of a more traditional type of Sunday, but the "bold" outreach and impact can be tremendous. This concept is not new. In

the past, all roads within our community lead to the Church. Today, we must re-engineer our mission roads to begin from the Church and then go out into the community and then circle back to the Christian fellowship.

Finally, we must have the courage to break down the barriers of having Christian and non-Christian friends and family members. For many of us, we operate in two separate worlds and communities. Bridging these two worlds can be challenging and disruptive if not approached with the correct spirit. Yet, at the same time, it can be gratifying if you let God show your joy and hope as a true believer through your words and actions.

Moving forward calls for imagination, resilience, faith, and direction from God. It does not require that everyone be on the same page with consensual action plans. However, we cannot put a limit on God, nor our abilities of what we can to do for Him, who give us strength. Some congregations may resist the concept of change, especially when it stretches our carnal limitations. Impulsively, they will act first, and having learned from the experience, they will adjust (seeking God) and Try again. Proverbs 3:5-6 Again, I am thankful for your prayers and support as we journey together as laity in accomplishing great things for God. 1 Timothy 1:12 (NLT) I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him.

An Overview of The General Department of Communication and Information Technology (CIT)

Greetings CME Family!

The General Department of Communication and Information Technology (CIT) was established at the 2022 General Conference. Simply put, the CIT Department exists to connect, unite and share information, amplify the message of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church using a variety of platforms, provide support services and trainings, and empower the leadership and members of the connectional church with communication and information technology resources.

As the General Secretary and CIO, it is my goal to provide monthly communications and updates on this connectional ministry and resources available to ensure that the CIT Department can be of service to connectional members at all levels.

A variety of platforms will be used to connect with our members which include The Christian Index, the official CME Web site (https://thecmechurch.org), CME Communications (sign up to receive email notifications at the CME Web site), CME social media outlets such as the CME Facebook page (facebook.com/thecmechurch), CME YouTube Channel (youtube.com/cmechurch), Twitter (twitter.com/cmechurch), and Zoom. Please feel free to connect with me via email or telephone. I welcome your feedback, insights and support.

Here’s an overview of the CIT Department and its purpose and function. For additional details about the CIT Department, visit the official CME Web site at thecmechurch.org Purpose: It shall be the purpose of the Department of Communication and Information Technology to oversee communication and information technology for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and to connect, unite and share information within and beyond the walls of the Connectional Church.

Function: As the department of the church with focus primarily on communication and information technology and through the General Secretary of the department, the specific function of this department shall be to: a. Oversee mission-critical communication and information technology. b. Empower the Church with standardized technology services, tools and platforms. c. Maintain and further develop the official Web site of the CME Church.

d. Broaden the role and scope of communications and technology for the General Church. e. Implement communication strategies using state of the art communication and technology tools and resources. f. Oversee the public relations strategy and activities including branding for the General Church. g. Develop information, resources, databases, apps and services that provide channels of communication h. Operate a CME Technology portal that provides discounted computer hardware and software. i. Plan, create, produce or cause to be produced, and distribute or cause to be distributed resources. The Department shall provide digital content spaces for clergy and laity in local congregations in a variety of accessible formats to promote understanding and appreciation of the connectional Church, to develop support for and encourage participation in initiatives, ministries, and missions of the general Church and its departments, and to provide such resources and information to assist local congregations and their leaders in carrying out their ministries. j. Provide online registration support services for all connectional meetings, and assist Episcopal Districts with their online registration efforts. k. Publish digital or e-books, e-journals and other online material for distribution by the CME Church. l. Provide for appropriate translations of materials to the greatest extend possible, in languages designated by the General Conference of the CME Church; provide for appropriate translation of materials to the greatest extend possible of the Discipline in electronic format in languages designated by the General Conference of the CME Church. m. Create and participate in partnerships with other General Departments, and national, international, interdenominational, interfaith, and other organizations working in communications and information technology as deemed relevant to the mission and ministry of The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. n. Educate and train at all connectional levels in communication and technology principles and skills, including workshops and training experiences in communication and technology skills related to various media. o. To suggest and collaborate on creative funding sources and opportunities for alternative streams of income for the CME Church using technology platforms p. In collaboration with the College of Bishops, establish CIT teams at all levels in all Episcopal Districts with persons knowledgeable in the fields of communications and technology. q. Implement a “green” strategy for connectional meetings and assist annual conferences in developing a paperless strategy for the purpose of cost savings and ecological conservation efforts.

The General Department of Communication and Information Technology shall have a General Secretary and Chief Information Officer (CIO), who shall be a General Officer elected by the General Conference for this purpose, to oversee the Department and staff, processes and technologies to ensure they deliver outcomes that support the goals of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The General Secretary and Chief Information Officer will be amenable to the General Connectional Board as provided in the Discipline.

The General Department of Communication and Information Technology shall be supervised by a Standing Committee, the Chair of which shall be a Bishop elected by the College of Bishops, and the members of the committee assigned by a Special Committee of the General Connectional Board.

“All Things Come from Thee…And of Thy own Have We Given Thee!”

A LOOK AT GIVING, AND GIVERS IN TODAY’S CHURCH – Part One It is very familiar and traditional in many worship settings to acknowledge that God has given great gifts, and we give back in gratitude and reverence as an act of worship. For so many Christians this is a time of joy and obedience as we worship. However, with all the pressures of the economy, job insecurities, and family pressures, are we seeing giving and givers change their attitudes toward this focus in worship? Who are the “givers” in our churches; what are they giving; and in this digital age, how are they giving?

My purpose in initiating this discussion grew out of an experience at the 2022 General Conference. As many of you know, there were several increases in the budgetary requirements for the upcoming years. These increases now rest on the churches, members, and processes across the connection. Many left the General Conference asking how we would meet this demand and maintain our local churches in these challenging times.

During the General Conference, the Connectional Ministers’ Spouses held a “fundraising” effort to benefit our HBCU’s supported by the CME Church. This effort involved selling raffle tickets for baskets packed with regional gifts, small treasures, candies, and the like. It was a big hit, and the financial goal was met. However, some persons declined to participate because they disagreed with the method of the “fundraiser…raffles.” Let me hasten to add that these same objectors generously donated to the effort. They just did not agree with raffle efforts in the church.

So hence my question, what are our parameters for “fundraising?” Do we really believe that we should engage in fundraising efforts to support our churches and our global initiatives? What, if any, teachings and philosophies make up our foundation for giving and support from givers in our church?

Your response may be, “We depend upon, encourage, and teach the giving of tithes and offerings.” This seems logical and Biblical. But what is the state of tithes and offerings in our modern church?

As we consider the funding and support of our church and churches, join with me in a conversation on tithes and offerings, fundraising efforts and trends, and methods of giving and attitudes toward giving in our churches. This is a conversation many of us are having today, and hopefully, we can benefit as we examine our own attitudes and practices.

Paine College Department of Humanities to Celebrate

25th Anniversary of Evelyn G. Etheridge Conference on the Harlem Renaissance The Paine College Department of Humanities will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the Evelyn G. Etheridge Conference on the Harlem Renaissance on October 26-27, 2022, at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. This year's conference is a blended celebration in both virtual and on-campus formats. This year's theme is, "Art Matters: Historicizing Emancipation Through the Arts." The conference will host several major events, music, visual, and literary significance. There will be a town hall meeting as has become a feature at the conference as well as plans for tents featuring special presentations throughout the conference. The Conference, founded in 1997 by Dr. Lola Richardson, former chair of the Department and Paine alumna, will examine the national and international impact of one of the most important artistic and cultural movements in history that spanned from 1919 to 1940 and produced notable writers, critics, and artists such as Claude McKay, James Weldon Johnson, Augusta Savage, Gwendolyn Bennett, Bessie Smith, and Alain Locke. This year's conference is particularly special because the Harlem Renaissance turns 100, and this year's theme is "Art Matters: Historicizing Emancipation through the Arts". This year's keynote speaker is Mr. Omar Wynn, former Director of Exhibits Production, and Special Projects Coordinator at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The conference invites professors, undergraduate and graduate students, and independent scholars to present research that will examine the origins and the legacy of the Renaissance through interdisciplinary collaborations.

As part of the activities marking the homegoing of Late Bishop Professor Godwin Thompson Umoette, on Thursday, August 25, 2022, the senior bishop and CEO of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Lawrence Reddick III, led the members of the College of Bishops, connectional officers and members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in a special Tribute Service in Honour of Bishop Professor Godwin (l-r): Mrs. Loretta Helton, Mrs. Elizabeth Umoette, and Bishop Thompson Umoette, the 60th and the first indigenous Ricky D. Helton.

Recalled, on Saturday, February 26, 2022, Bishop Professor Godwin Thompson Umoette answered the glorious home call, and the funeral service was scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2022, by 10 a.m. in his home town, Ikot Akpan Ishiet ONNA LGA Akwa Ibom State with a special mock Senate Commendation Service on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the Senate Building, Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, while the memorial Thanksgiving Service was held on Sunday August 28, 2022, in All Saints CME Church, Ikot Akpan Ishiet by 10 a.m.

The tribute/reception Service was organized by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Tenth Episcopal District to receive also Bishop Ricky Helton and first lady into the Tenth Episcopal District at the National Headquarters, All Saints CME Church, Ikot Akpan Ishiet, ONNA LGA Akwa Ibom State Nigeria.

During the August 25th tribute, Mrs. Elizabeth Godwin Thompson Umoette and Akaniyene Godwin Thompson Umoette, on behalf of the Bishop Umoette's family, appreciated God and thanked the Snr. Bishop Lawrence Reddick and members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for the show of love and prayed for God's blessing upon members of the CME Church.

In attendance were: Bishop Lawrence Reddick III, the senior bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the presiding prelate, Eighth Episcopal District; Bishop James B. Honoring Mrs. Claricie Berry Hill A Lifetime CME Submitted by Bonnie Gill Director, Board of Christian Education

Claricie Berry Hill is a member of Miles Memorial CME Church Tacoma, Washington, where the Reverend Christopher Ruff serves as the pastor.

Claricie Berry Hill was born December 12, 1929, to Reverend and Mrs. Robert M. Berry (deceased) in Searcy, Arkansas. She is the youngest of 9 siblings, all now deceased. Her grandfather, Reverend Lemuel Bell, was a Presiding Elder in the CME Church. Both Reverend Robert Berry and Reverend Lemuel Bell were traveling ministers in the area churches of Searcy, Arkansas. The family were members of St. Mary CME Church in Searcy.

As a young girl, Claricie was an active member. She was president of the Mattie E. Coleman Missionary Society, a Sunday School student, a junior usher, and a member of the Epworth League, [which at that time was a Methodist association for youth and young adults]. Claricie attended and graduated from White County Training School (Searcy, Arkansas) and Philander Smith College (Little Rock, Arkansas).

Claricie and her husband, Milton Herbert Hill, were high school sweethearts and were married December 27, 1956, in Searcy, Arkansas. Milton Hill was drafted into the military (Army) and was transferred to Fort Lewis Washington. They were blessed with 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hill preceded her in death in 1987.

She was employed by the Tacoma Public School District and worked at Stewart Middle School as a teacher’s assistant in Tacoma, Washington. She also served as guidance secretary at Stewart until retiring in 1997.

In addition to being a wife, mother, and grandparent, she has been an active, faithful, and long-time member of Miles Memorial CME Church, Tacoma, Washington, for over 60 years.

Claricie served in many auxiliaries, such as president of the Chancel Choir, secretary of the Missionary Society, Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Christian Education, secretary of the Stewardess Board, and Sunday School Superintendent. She continues to be active with the Stewardess Board and the Sunday School.

Claricie is still active in the church and attends Sunday School and morning service when possible. Her favorite song is, “Blessed Assurance.” She is cheerful and always has a smile. We are truly blessed to have her as a lifetime CME and a mentor to all the members at Miles Memorial. May God continue to shower her with blessings.

Mt. Pilgrim, Denton, TX Summer Celebrations Willing Workers, Mothers, Women, Families, and Faith Submitted by Demetria Ennis-Cole

Mt. Pilgrim CME hosted summer activities that honored willing workers, mothers, women, families, and faith. On July 31, 2022, Pastor Keaton Fuller turned his appreciation service into a church appreciation service for the willing workers at Mt. Pilgrim CME who kept the online services, the business of the church, and the outreach ministries going. Mrs. Betty Kimble asked Mya Fuller to speak during the service, and Mya did a fantastic job explaining the characteristics of a willing worker. Mya spoke with power and poise, and her message was well-prepared. Her parents are Rev. and Mrs. Keaton Fuller. Mya was introduced by her friend, Imani Duncan. Imani said Mya “is a senior at Denton Ryan High School where she is a member of the Spanish, English, and National Honor Societies. In addition, Mya is in the top 10% of her class, and she plans to pursue a career in medicine.”

Mya’s topic was, “Willing Workers.” She said that a willing worker is more than someone who has the desire and ability to work. According to Mya, a willing worker is one who has the following characteristics: 1) receptiveness, 2) grit, 3) empathy, and 4) self-awareness. Mya defined receptiveness as the ability to be aware of others and proactively respond to their needs. In addition, receptiveness includes acting on the ideas, suggestions, and complaints of others. Grit was defined as a lifestyle that included perseverance and strength to overcome the challenges of life. Those with grit are equipped to suffer and move beyond that suffering to further the goals of God’s Kingdom. Mya defined empathy as the ability to understand others and share their feelings.

Empathy allows us to connect with a person on an emotional level, provide them with encouragement, and lead them to the Great Problem Solver, Jesus Christ. Self-awareness was defined as the ability to examine and judge whether our actions and thoughts align with our internal standard and our relationship with God. Mya concluded by saying, “… true willing workers are diligent, and they continuously exhibit the four characteristics previously named: 26

1) receptiveness, 2) grit, 3) empathy, and 4) selfawareness.”

Mothers at Mt. Pilgrim CME received tributes for their diligence and service to others. They are the first women in children’s lives. A mother gives birth, adopts, or stands in when needed. She celebrates birthdays, sacrifices, teaches, advocates for, encourages, and introduces children to Jesus Christ.

Mothers give unselfishly and embark on a lifelong journey that includes nurturing, advising, comforting, nursing, and serving. Any woman who cares for others and supports them exemplifies motherhood.

A mother’s (l-r): Imani Duncan and Mya Fuller love can make the difference in a child’s life by demonstrating the unfailing love of God. Aunts, sisters, close friends, and women in ministry can serve as mothers when they offer encouragement and patiently meet the needs of others.

Women who have served many years and helped nurture younger women and families are affectionately called “church mothers.” The mothers at Mt. Pilgrim CME, Mrs. Ruby Cole, Mrs. Betty Kimble, and Mrs. Lillie Clark, were given tokens of appreciation and honored with special flowers, and they accepted them with grace and thanksgiving.

St. John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, honored two students as recipients of scholarship awards during its service on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

Each student will receive a one-time award of $2,500 to help pay for college. The annual scholarships and awards are funded through private donations.

The St. John CME Church Scholarship Award was established through the Board of Christian Education and Formation in 2022 to support college students and high school seniors who are active church members. This scholarship is renewable each year for continuing students that meet the Scholarship Eligibility Requirements.

Congratulations to Lyric LaShae Cotton and Christian Imari Ruffin, scholarship recipients for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Lyric LaShae Cotton, who will be a Senior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC will receive a (BSN) Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with an expected date of graduation May 2023. She served as a Servant Leader Intern at the Kimberley Park Elementary Freedom School Program this summer. In her local church, she serves as Lead Liturgical Dance Instructor and is a member of the Church Youth Group participating in service projects and evangelism ministries at both the local and district level. As a student leader and scholar, Ms. Cotton has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in the academy, community and in her faith tradition. In the academy, she was named as A Black Achiever, participated in the Chick-Fil-A Academy, was named a Crosby Scholar, and was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. In addition, she is an esteemed member of the National Technical Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars.

Christian Imari Ruffin is a graduate of Glenn High School in Winston-Salem and has been a member of St. John for over two years. She has also been active in Youth Sunday Church School, Praise Team and serves on the Technology Team. At Glenn High School, she served as President of the Leadership Experience Organization and as the flag team manager. She has served for four years as a Youth Ambassador with Barnabas House Community Development Corporation. Christian will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro this fall and said she is “excited to pursue a degree in nursing and to make a positive impact in her community, especially to those that are less privileged.”

Once again, to our 2022 recipients, congratulations, and as they start their journey toward becoming future leaders, we have no doubt they will continue to make helping their families, communities and others a priority.

Kirkwood Temple Celebrates 28th Anniversary of Pastor Jerry L. Christian, Sr. Submitted by Mae F. Saulter, Vice-President Board of Christian Education

June 12, 2022, marked a significant day for the Kirkwood Temple CME Church family. It was the day that the Lord had (l-r): Mrs. Doretha and Dr. Jerry Christian Sr. made, plus the day that Dr. Jerry Lee Christian, Sr. was highly honored for serving as our visionary, community-oriented, giving, and fun-loving PASTOR for 28 consecutive years, more than the 29 pastors before him!! We are proud to have him as our Pastor. One of his significant traits is that he never asks members to do more than what he is willing to do for our beloved 97-plus-year-old Kirkwood Temple. He LEADS the way in every special event that the church members undertake, especially our significant days such as the Children/Youth Africanza Banquet, Men & Women's Special Day, Music Department Observance, and ALL of the Church Anniversary activities. Four of our most dedicated and loyal members served as General Co-Chairpersons. They were Brother Braxton & Rev. Felisa Holman and Brother Cory & Rev. Janice Lewis. Kudos to these couples for a job well done!

Our theme was, "Stepping Up and Staying Up for The Service of The Saints." Our Scripture reference was Romans 10:14-15 which states: "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Dr. Jerry L. Christian, Sr. gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things." (KJV) Since this was a ROYAL event, the colors were shades of PURPLE. The sanctuary was a beautiful sight. What made the 28th Pastor's Appreciation even more significant and extra special was the keynote speaker was the Reverend Dr. Jerry Lee Christian, Jr., the eldest son of our energetic and dynamic Pastor. Watching and listening to Dr. Christian, Jr. was like watching his father. As some would say: "Dr. Christian, Jr. literally brought the house down."

Upon arrival in August 1994, Dr. Christian hit the ground running and to this day, he has not stopped. In addition to serving as Kirkwood Temple's full-time Pastor, he is very active in the Dallas Community serving in various capacities, such as with the Dallas Independent School District, the City & County of Dallas, as well as in the Texas political environment.

Because of his leadership style and caring spirit, Kirkwood Temple's outreach ministries have soared to more than 25, even during the COVID-19 Pandemic. During this unprecedented time, Dr. Christian implemented the Parking Lot Praise Service during the summer of 2020. The purpose was to keep members connected and in fellowship.

Before returning to in-house worship in September 2021, members were also able to enjoy worship service on You Tube and Facebook, both of which are still available to those members who have not returned to in-house worship service. Another real plus was that our Pastor stayed in contact with the (l-r): Drs. Jerry Christian Jr. and Sr. members via weekly text messages, phone calls and emails to keep us high in spirit and lifted up in the Lord. He even collaborated with one of Dallas' medical facilities to help members get the COVID-19 vaccines. These are but a few examples of how our visionary PASTOR has led his flock!
