The Church and Politics: Christians Ought to Vote

Can the church and politics mix? Must they?

Should they? There is a long history of the church being mixed with politics. From the beginning of the church from the mouth of Jesus to the Day of Pentecost to its spread beyond Syria-Palestine, the church has been involved in politics. In my opinion, this has most often been a lop-sided relationship weighing heavily on the side of those outside the church. This is not to say that the church has never had an active role in the affair. On the contrary, the church has had its share of power in the secular arena, all too often to the detriment of its Christian evangelistic witness. But as an institution, this has been less than more true of its life in the world, even in places where the Christian religion is said to have pre-eminence in the public sphere.

It cannot be denied, nor should it be, that the Bible speaks truth to power throughout its pages. But it must also be stated that while the pages of the Bible are the inspired word of God, some human being must do the actual declaring of "what thus saith the Lord" in the written text to the powers that be. Does this mean that the state is evil by nature? No. State government itself, as a social and moral construct or institution for the good of the people, is an invention of the mind of God. Yet what God produces, Satan seduces, and those who have received civil authority are often found to be misusers of that power and abusers of the people subject to their rule, including the people of God in the church.

The church and secular politics have mixed.

The Bible paints a picture of separation of church and state by enmity between the two, just as the flesh wars against the spirit, but this separation is not God's intent.

Both before and after establishing a king for Israel, God commanded those in public leadership to subject

themselves to the commands of God which were given to all the people, and warned them against following their own minds. In the Old Testament, Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., prophets and judges were Editor called and empowered to serve as mediators not only between God and humans, but also between humans themselves. In the New Testament, where the people of God are dispersed among the nations, God's people are called to BE a holy and righteous standard flying in the wind of corrupt, self-serving governments. In both testaments, rulers and leaders who are followers of God often must work within oppressive and evil systems of government and must discover and implement ways of dealing with persons who develop or perpetrate such systems, all while holding fast to faith in Christ and the command to love.

The church and secular politics do mix. In terms of the enmity between the people of God and the state, the world is not so different today from that of the Bible.

By experience, we in the church can identify with much of the persecution we see written. The days of the church as a world power in its own right are long gone, yet to be renewed in the Last Day. Nevertheless, this does not absolve the members of the church from our responsibility to act as good citizens of the government to which we are subject, nor does it dismiss the church as an entity of God from making righteous observations or issuing godly pronouncements in the public arena.

The church and secular politics must mix.

We must pray for the leaders of our country and world.

Continued from previous page We must do good to one another, and there is no law against this. We must, by the words of our mouths and the testimonies of our lives, point our oppressors to the God who heals. We must love our neighbors as we love ourselves. And in a time and land in which we have the privilege and opportunity to make our witness seen and heard in a way not afforded to most of either our religious or ethnic ancestors - the right to vote - we must make our voice heard through the ballot.

It is impossible to omit religion from politics because of the question of character of a candidate or proposal. This is not a license to judge or condemn another, but a person's religion, or even lack thereof, will give some direction to and help to determine their character in office.

This is for both politics within the church and outside it.

Character is more than just what a person won't or will do, does or doesn't do. It is also how they respond to their own faults and failures, and those they observe or that are

revealed in others. Even in the Old Testament, when the people chose their own rulers, those rulers were still held accountable to the character expectations of God. It was when politics became personal and lacked holy character that administrations became wicked and people, pawns.

But it is also impossible to omit religion from politics because it says much about the people called Christians. When we can do the least exertive and yet most powerful thing within our abilities as Christian citizens to do good to affect the lives of our fellow human beings, but instead sit out and do nothing, it shows our lack of love for the other. For with our vote, we lift our voice and act on behalf of “the least of these.” Voting may be in response to the character of others, but it also shows our own character as children of God in obedience to our God.

As we prepare or continue to participate in the democratic electoral process, let us also bear in mind that the vote is more than just our voice (or silence) to those who are running for office or proposing a political action; it is also our voice to God.

I am thankful to God and to you for trusting me with the ministry of our historic denominational publication, The Christian Index. I am honored to receive your articles and other submissions that continue to celebrate and promote Christian faith and living in these turbulent and trying times of both social unrest and the physical health threat of COVID-19. As your Editor, it is my responsibility to compile and present material that prophetically informs and speaks the gospel to the reader, so that together we may be spiritually strengthened in the faith founded in Christ and may work together to fulfill his call to us as the CME Church during these days.

To that end, The Christian Index solicits and publishes: information received from and about the CME Connection from our College of Bishops, our various General Departments, and our CMEaffiliated schools; news of church ministries and events; personal accomplishments, victories, and recognitions of our fellow Christians; speeches, sermons, essays, poems, and other forms of expression that promote the understanding of the Christian faith, and the growth and maturity of believers; and announcements and statements addressing social and political issues from a Christian perspective. I am highly grateful for your submissions for publication. Those persons who contribute to the content of The Daily Index are also acknowledged and extremely appreciated.

Together we give voice to who we are, what we value and believe, and what we do as members of the body of Christ.

The puzzles of the “Children/Youth” section continue to provide fun and invigorating challenges, inviting young readers into the broader life of the Church and giving strength to older ones.

Publications released by CME authors and artists, along with a few others, are promoted within our pages; and with great respect, I continue to celebrate the lives and ministries of those who have left this earthly walk, thus “joining the great cloud.”

It must be noted that attending and reporting on denominational and ecumenical events continues to have a vital role in this ministry. Though the coronavirus pandemic has put a huge dent in the ability to travel this year, I have visited almost every annual conference in the United States. Additionally, prior to the pandemic, I visited the Western Region Annual Conference in Nigeria and the newly renovated Breeding-Montgomery Bible College in Ikot Ekpene.

I offer sincere thanks to Dr. Roderick Lewis and the staff of the Department of Publications for their work in producing The Christian Index, as well as to my colleagues on the General Officers Council, for their prayers and words of support, and for their valued contributions to the content of The Christian Index. Thanks, also, to Dr. Theresa Duhart for publishing my production of the liturgical calendar on the CME website.

I am very grateful for the prayers, guidance, and support of my department chair, Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr., who is an advisor, a friend, and a brother beloved.

Finally, a special thank you to my wife, Sis. Phyliss, who continues to support me and this ministry prayerfully, financially, and materially. God bless and keep you forever.

Other Activities 1. I have developed an electronic edition of The Christian Index, which is available at Issuu.com, continued electronic submissions of articles and PayPal processing of payments, begun international distribution on a trial basis, and maintained timely production through COVID-19.

2. As authorized by the General Connectional Board of 2019, the cost of the international electronic editions is $5.00 per year. (paragraph 1026.2) This cost has been graciously underwritten by several persons, for whom I am thankful. Currently, electronic issues are distributed each month to 47 persons. These consist of 18 persons in our international work in the 8th, 11th, and 10th Episcopal Districts, the College of Bishops, and members of the Standing Committee on The Christian Index. I will continue to work to expand this number internationally and to keep the concern for an electronic edition before our church.

3. The Editor and the Publisher of The Christian Index have agreed to offer domestic electronic issues at a cost of $5.00 each.

Like most of our annual conferences, I am grateful for the co-incidental blessing COVID-19 has brought – the blessing of an improved financial state due to fewer expenses. However, I do miss seeing all of you in person. The advantage is that in this social media state, as mentioned earlier, I have been able to attend even more conferences.

Vision My vision is to have a permanent international distribution, an increased young adult and international presence, and to create advertising space in the magazine.

Observations The Christian Index continues its peculiar prophetic ministry of providing vision. This vision is not an active, controlling one that gives immutable directions; rather, it is interactive in nature, revealing the vision of the Church as implemented – who we are, where we are going, how we are getting there. In other words, our Christian walk and progress. This is not simply a mirroring of the bishops' visions and goals; instead The Christian Index aids the Church’s vision by providing widespread evaluation and participation throughout the Church.

We are in the age of social media. If we did not know it before, we know it now. It is everywhere we look and is found, to varying degrees, in practically every society. Its presence is daunting in many ways, but we must try to remember that even, and especially, in the church, social and other forms of media are not in competition. We must continue to seek to know how our various General Departments and ministries might cooperate even more fully and use social media, with its plethora of platforms, to suitably meet the needs of every member and this present age, not overlapping roles or overlooking anyone, but complementing each other and building up the church to the glory of God.

The Christian Index continues to speak to the entire Church – people of varying ages and stations, ethnicities and cultures; people who may not, or do not always, think alike. It gives persons room to fully express themselves in a lasting way. It tells not only your story but is a continuous history of our denomination at work in the world. It reminds us and declares to the world that we are a collective body of Christ. It reminds us that we are not a popularity group, but a faith body making every effort in the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit to remain a whole body within the body of Christ.

It remains the goal of this Editor to take seriously our approach to the future and not just to react to the present – however tempting that may be – respecting our past even as we stretch to serve the present age and anticipate the age to come. This magazine is the official organ of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It belongs to you, and I am your Editor.

Conclusion Thank you so very much for the support you have given this Editor and for your participation in this ministry. With great eagerness I look forward to continued ministry in this office and in this our truly great body of faith, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Advertising Plan Related to Recommendation #4: 1. Allow for a maximum of three pages of advertising within the current total maximum (per the Publisher) of 48 pages. The Editor will determine the need for pages and placement of the advertisements within already-existing authority. (paragraph 1029) 2. The following spaces shall be offered on a first-come, first-served basis: one (1) full page, two (2) half-pages, and four (4) quarter-pages.

3. Preference will be given to CME-operated businesses or entities.

4. The cost for space for CME-owned/operated businesses will be: $100.00/full page, $50.00/half page, and $25.00/quarter page, each per month. The cost for space for nonCME owned/operated businesses will be: $200.00/full page, $100.00/half page, and $50.00/quarter page, each per month. For an additional payment as per the schedule, all ads will also appear on the Facebook page of The Christian Index. Payment in-full shall be received prior to the placement of any advertisement. At the Editor’s discretion, there will be no charge for other non-profit entities.

5. The cost will be the same for color and B/W advertisements and regardless of whether a picture is included.

6. Advertisements will run for three-month periods with the possibility of extension at the end of the run. This will depend on the need to use the space for some other advertiser and must be paid up front and in full.

7. Neither civic political campaigns nor any advertisements that are contrary to The General Rules or our Social Creed will be allowed.

8. Advertisements must be submitted as either picture file or PDF format and be printready.

9. Guidelines subject to change with advance notice from the Editor.

10. An electronic CME Church candidates’ edition will be offered free of charge to subscribers from the CME Church and public around May of 2021 and 2022.

The Standing Committee on the Christian Index Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr., Chair Reverend Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor The Standing Committee of the Christian Index met on Sunday, August 30, 2020 via Zoom. The meeting was called to order at 8:11 PM CST/ 9:11 PM EST by the chair, Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr. with a welcome and statement of purpose.

Mrs. Diana Duncan offered the opening prayer. Bishop Williams presented our very faithful, innovative, and energectic Editor, Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., who then presented his report.

Report of the Editor The Editor has been consistently and constantly working to improve the magazine. The Overseas distribution is officially underway. Currently approximately 77 electronic issues are being distributed on a monthly basis. The distribution includes the College of Bishops, the Standing Committee, and Connectional Members in Africa and Jamaica. The yearly cost for overseas subscriptions is $5.00 per year and is currently being underwritten.

Advertisement: It was moved to create an advertisement space within the magazine. The space will be reserved for businesses only. The frequency of the advertisement will be determined by the Editor. The fee scale will be $25 (Quarter Page), $50 (Half Page), and $100 (Full Page). The motion carried.

Special Candidate’s Edition: It was moved to offer TWO one-time electronic issues for Candidates for the Episcopacy and General Officers around May 2021 and May 2022. The candidates will pay fees determined by the editor for ads to be placed in the magazine. Current subscribers to the Index will receive the electronic publication free of charge. The motion carried.

Recommendations 1. That the Department of Publications and the Department of The Christian Index continue to offer an international, electronic issue and distribution of The Christian Index, as well as hard copies or printed editions. a. With permission from the 2019 General Connectional Board and the Publisher, Dr. Lewis, Editor Spragin has successfully distributed an electronic edition of The Christian Index over the past five months to 77 persons, primarily international CMEs. This number is expected to increase. b. In keeping with the 2018 Discipline, the Department of Publications will assume all operations of this distribution beginning with May 2021. Editor Spragin will phase out his international distribution by the end of Summer, 2021.

2. That the Department of Publications and the Department of The Christian Index pursue a domestic electronic distribution of The Christian Index as a tag-along to the print edition.

3. That the domestic cost for the tag-along edition be fixed at $10.00 above the annual subscription cost.

a. This additional fee shall be paid to the Department of Publication. b. 30% of the additional fee shall be paid to the Department of The Christian Index by the Department of Publications from gross revenues.

4. The advertising plan offered by the Editor be approved, subject to the contractual limitations placed upon the Publisher by the United States Postal Service.

Rev. Richard McDuffie moved to receive the Editor’s Report with the recommendations. Rev. Dr. Karen Walker-McClure seconded the motion. The motion carried.

“From Where I Sit …”

“Do You Want More Life Insurance?”

Despite all that is occurring in our world today, this is still the best time to secure more life insurance for those selected persons who are eligible to obtain it. Yes, we have life insurance associated with our CME Retirement Plan, but its total is limited to the amount of our salaries and then only if the full amount of our 12% is contributed. And yes, we may have retiree insurance (sponsored and funded by the General Board of Personnel Services) if we retired after age 72 but its maximum is limited to $10,000 on the life of the participant. But what if we want more life insurance? Do we have any options?

Yes, there is one option that is available for pastors, presiding elders, and other employees of the CME Church (clergy or lay) who meet just a few requirements. That option is the CME Key Person Life Insurance Plan underwritten

by Unum! And that option is available to any employee of the CME Church (connectional or local) who works approximately 20 hours per week and receives a salary (not an honorarium) and who is 70 or younger at the time of enrollment. These eligible employees may enroll for either $50,000 or $100,000 of benefits that will be payable to their designated beneficiaries. And because this is an existing group Plan, a key feature of it is that there are NO medical questions. It offers GUARANTEED ACCEPTANCE of enrollees who work for the church and are 70 or younger at the time of enrollment. There is also NO WAITING PERIOD. Enrollees are covered immediately upon receipt of their completed enrollment form and payment.

The annual cost is $990 for $100,000 ($515 semiannually) and $590 for $50,000 ($315 semiannually).

These costs can be self-paid by the enrollee or fully paid by the church with 50% of the benefit allocated to the church. The Plan also includes 1) double indemnity, 2) accidental death, 3) dismemberment and 4) limited educational benefits (for dependent children).

Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business”

Growing The Church During A Pandemic Through Prayer In my last article, we looked at four teams that would be necessary to grow the church during a pandemic. I suggested, “We have a unique opportunity as pastors and laity to look at innovative ways to grow the local church.” I would like us to look at the power of prayer during these challenging times. As prayer relates to church growth, as prayer relates to evangelism, what is our approach?

I suggest the pastor and laity develop a prayer team leader who presents themselves on behalf of the local church. The Commission on Membership and Evangelism in The Book of Discipline, page 142 paragraph 525.4 indicates that prayer leads the way. If we are going to do anything for God, we must hear and talk to God about God’s work. We do not evangelize in our power. The development of the prayer team (committee) is paramount and its mission must be Holy Spirit led. Other things seem more important than prayer in the local church and the life of the believer. However, prayer should lead the way and must not be the last thing we do but the first. Prayer must not be an afterthought but a forethought. The pastor and leaders must not make excuses for this spiritual discipline.

We are often surprised and accepting when it comes to the lack of evangelism. However, we must realize God wants sinners saved! We must share the Gospel, our faith, pray, and be amazed at answered prayer. We flounder in our efforts to evangelize partly because we fail to pray for the boldness to care, share, and declare. Think of prayer as a seed placed in the ground and soaked with faith which brings forth fantastic results. However, should you hold your seed or provide a safe place rather than planting it, it will bring forth no results.

The local church leadership team who understands the power of prayer will see church growth. There is no substitute for prayer! God works in partnership with people. We pray to the Father, through the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus. Therefore, we involve the entire Trinity in our prayers. With that kind of power, the family, local church, community, and everything around you will grow. Prayer is real work!

Over the last few months, we went from in-person worship to virtual worship, parking lot praise, Zoom teaching and worship, and teleconference worship. But Prayer! But Prayer! But Prayer! Hallelujah! Prayer did not need zoom, teleconference, or the parking lot. I challenge you to pray to remain consistent if you desire to grow your church. Remember, put prayer first.

THE PRACTITIONER Pandemic Prayer Great God, you are an ever-present help in times of trouble, and that’s why we’re praying now.

We are troubled and we’re worried things are going to get more troubling.

This virus is spreading around the world: so many are seriously ill or will be seriously ill, so many health care systems are stretched or will be stretched.

Be with front line medical workers, give them courage to do their work and keep them safe.

Be with public health officials as they make decisions for the common good, and politicians as they roll those decisions out.

Help us to be kind to one another, because anxiety can make us snappy.

Help our communities to be resilient and expansive as we reach out to help all who are isolated and afraid.

In these times of shutdowns and slowdowns, when travel is restricted or banned, as routines are disrupted and we spend less time together or more time together, help us zero in on what is essential.

Thank you that love is also contagious and stronger than any virus.

You will be with us, and we will be with each other in sickness and in health.

Amen.

“IN BETWEEN THE LINES” OF THE LAY MINISTRY SONG, “WE’RE LAITY” The second Sunday of October of every year, within the CME Church, Connectional Lay Ministry Day is celebrated. . . On this day and at various other meetings and occasions during the year, THE LAY MINISTRY SONG—"WE’RE LAITY”, is sung (to the tune of “We’re Marching to Zion”) by those in attendance. I believe that Dr. Willie L. Graham, the original writer of this hymn had a focus and a spirit that is not always captured during our singing. For me, “We’re Laity” is a call to action that can only be realized when our actions parallel and go beyond the words of the song. . . It is a call for a consistent and faithful witness as disciples of Christ. So, let’s “get in between the lines” and make sure that going forward we, as “Laity,” know and express in our words and actions and faithfully support what I believe Dr. Graham meant for us to know and to do: We’re asking others to come and join lay ministry work, And help to build a stronger Church, And help to build a stronger Church, And win more souls to Christ and win more souls to Christ.

I believe that in this first verse Dr. Graham is reminding and employing Laity to understand that it is our lot to assist in uplifting and building up the church. We must always seek others to help us do the work and live up to who we are as laity, for we (laity) are The Unordained People of God, Furthering the Mission of the Church in the World. Thus, our Mission of Reaching, Teaching and Ministering to All Generations is wrapped up in God’s mission for the Church, which is to win souls to Christ.

We know some may not come, but we won’t lose the faith, For Christ, the Lord is on our side, For Christ, the Lord is on our side, With Him we cannot fail, with Him we cannot fail.

Dr. Graham knew that everyone who is invited to join in the work of Lay Ministry would not respond positively; however, our faith and belief is in the fact that God will not forsake or leave us in our trying.

Success is found through faith in God and sustained effort.

So, let us do our best, in service of the Lord, To bring God’s kingdom here on earth, To bring God’s Kingdom here on earth, And win the hearts of man and win the hearts of man.

God expects our best in the work that we do in His name; we must understand that God’s kingdom is a place of love and peace, so as we live our lives, we must do so in a manner that our words and actions represent the likeness and presence of God. Winning souls comes about from sincere and loving actions.

Chorus We’re laity, God’s people, His servants we’re dutiful Laity, We’re lay who are working for Jesus, to build the kingdom of God. Yes, we are laity, The Unordained People of God, Furthering the Mission of the Church in the World . . .

“Facing Challenges and Embracing Opportunities” October 2020 is a challenging time for the world. We find ourselves in a time of opportunities wrapped in challenges. The Ministers’ Spouses Widows/Widowers Department is actively involved in continuing the ministry of love and giving throughout the CME Church. Twenty-five years ago, following the 1994 General Conference that approved the formation of the department to be organized on the Connectional, Regional, and district levels, the group meet at the CME Convocation and launched the work and service of this great fellowship.

The organizing group adopted bylaws, formulated reporting procedures, and raised funds to support its platform ministries of support for widows and widowers of the ministry and scholarship opportunities for children of ministers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The first officers of the Connectional executive team were: Mrs. Patricia Redds, Mrs. Louise Buckner, Mrs. Maggie Banks (Now Rev. Maggie Banks, Presiding Elder), Mrs. Charlotte Yenn-Batah, Mrs. C.D. Lynn Jones, Mrs. Deborah Harris, Mrs. Frances Jones, Mrs. Cornello Berliner, Mrs. Gladys CherryA charge to keep I have, Jones, and Mrs. Helen Sprewer. At the 1994 General Conference, during the long discussion of the need for this group, it was noted that specific attention was needed for support of this vulnerable membership of the church. Through the years, it has not been without struggle, but the annual gifts have gone from then $25.00 to $100.00. The generous Regions and districts provide additional gifts and recognitions to their widows and widowers as well.

The Connectional Department mandates that an annual meeting take place at the Unity Summit. Covid-19 has prevented that for this signal celebration year.

Ministry for the Department includes wellness, encouragement, and fellowship. Dr. Lisa Taylor, vice president for academic affairs at Texas College, came to Texas College last summer with a background in online education technology and a vision for the future. She wanted to increase the college’s digital learning capabilities. So before the COVID-19 pandemic reached East Texas in March, the staff was already in training.

“My research shows with the proper support online is possible,” Taylor said. “We started being ready for this before the virus.”

On July 2, Texas College announced that classes would be held online only and fall sports were canceled in light of the coronavirus concerns. Students returned to classes on Aug. 12 online, and Taylor said she hasn’t heard any complaints so far. The fall semester will conclude on Nov. 20, according to the college.

In the beginning, Taylor said a handful of professors were concerned. But the worry was soon taken out of the equation. “It’s (online education) what I love,” Taylor said. “I want to replicate that passion in the faculty.”

At Texas College, students attend classes they normally would in person at a scheduled time using Zoom instead.

Taylor said students learning how to take courses online helps them have the skills they need for the job market.

Training for online tools began last fall as educators dabbled in the virtual setting. In February, the college held another digital training. After spring break, the digital learning tools were fresh on the professors’ minds. By March 30, all courses were online ready. The college then worked to make sure every student had a device to complete online course work, Taylor said. She added that 80% of students were satisfied with the spring semester, according to an external review.

Prior to the start of classes, students received information on how to post in a discussion forum and take online quizzes to practice for their online courses, Taylor said. Students are having Zoom sessions and teachers are recording their lectures for students who may not be able to attend due to other obligations. “It’s not punitive if they can’t make it because we are still in crisis mode,” she said.

Athletes are meeting their coaches online and attending virtual workouts. “We’re trying to keep everything as normal as possible as we’re in this virtual mode of delivery,” Marshall-Biggins [Director of Student Afairs] said.

She said a lot of students were hesitant about going virtual, but now they’re adjusting to the changes. “For us, their safety is more important,” she said. “They’re all just kind of jumping into it. We’re excited that they’re getting on board.”

In early August, the college held its new student orientation – traditionally an in-person event – using Zoom.

Marshall-Biggins said the orientation was a success. Marshall-Biggins said there are several Student Affairs events that will continue forward virtually, including homecoming festivities, financial aid workshops, student elections and Greek Life recruitment. “We’re planning to do all the things we normally do (but virtually),” she said. Band and choir students are also meeting and practicing online.

Taylor noted Texas College is focused on students having a quality education and gaining critical thinking skills.

“Texas College has made sure the curriculum is high quality online,” Taylor said. “If you can Google it, it’s not learning.” There’s also a retention team to make sure students aren’t falling behind, Taylor said. She’s encouraging students and faculty to have back-up plans in case files get lost. We’ve got a Plan A, B and C,” Taylor said. “If lightning strikes the server, what’s the plan? Be realistic and be prepared.”

Joann Bashinsky Establishes $168,000 Endowed Scholarship Fund at Miles College August 31, 2020

Local philanthropist, Mrs. Joann Bashinsky has announced the establishment of the Joann Bashinsky Scholarship Fund at Miles College. This generous $168,000 gift will provide three four-year scholarships to competitively selected students who lack the financial resources to attend college.

Mrs. Bashinsky, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, is the widow of Sloan Y. Bashinsky, who was the founder, chairman, and CEO of Golden Flake Foods – a 96-year-old Birmingham-based company. Mr. Bashinsky was also the majority shareholder of Golden Flake Enterprises.

"This gift exemplifies the passion Mrs. Bashinsky has for improving the lives of young people in our community and ensuring that opportunity and access to education is available for all those who seek it,” said Bobbie Knight, Miles College President.

“I am extremely passionate about children having access to education. I have been able to send countless students to other colleges around the state and now it is my honor to work with President Knight to help as many students as we can attend Miles College. These young people deserve the best that life has to offer and I hope my gift will help them achieve their dreams,” said Mrs. Joann Bashinky, Philanthropist

Augusta Commission OKs $1.4 million in CARES Act funds for Paine College September 3, 2020

The Augusta Commission agreed Tuesday to give Paine College $1.4 million in CARES Act funding to cover educational expenses and facility upgrades.

At a called meeting, the motion passed 8-2 with commissioner Mary Davis and Mayor Pro Tem Sean Frantom opposed.

The historically Black college wrote a request for funding dated Tuesday, the deadline for cities to finalize their plans to spend the pandemic relief funds. The commission had not openly discussed the request until Tuesday.

Augusta is eligible for up to $10.4 million in reimbursement for COVID-19 expenses from a state allocation, while the city Housing and Community Development Department is administering additional CARES Act grants.

Paine President Cheryl Evans Jones said the college would use the largest portion of funds, $250,000, for virtual classrooms, smart labs and mobile instruction. An additional $200,000 each would go to residence hall improvements and faculty and staff retention, along with $198,000 for student laptops.

Paine already has received at least $1.7 million in CARES Act funding available to higher education institutions nationwide. Augusta University received $6.1 million of the same funds. Paine also obtained a Payroll Protection Program loan of at least $1 million.

The pandemic has placed already vulnerable historically Black colleges and universities in a precarious position as they continue to educate and employ Black people at greater risk from COVID-19.

Paine has educated many city leaders and residents, although its Southern Association of Colleges' accreditation remains in limbo for financial reasons, pending the end of litigation.

A cry was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning Rachel weeping for her children. Refusing to be comforted, for they are dead. (Matthew 2:18) The list of names at the beginning of this article is a partial list of Black Americans who were killed. The unabridged list is much longer.

“I can’t breathe” is a phrase that is instantly recognized as the final, helpless plea made before the tragic deaths of Black men at the hands of brutal police officers. The above-named persons spent their last moments in this world fighting for air.

The systemic racism and inequitable treatment of Black mem and (women) by police is no coincidence, it stems from 400 years of devaluing Black life in America.

And that truth is enough to take a Black man’s breath away!

The way they left this earth is an injustice. And all of us should be outraged at the treatment of our black males and (females) and the deaths of those who have so wrongly lost their lives at the hands of racism. Let me remind you that . . .

Racism did not end with slavery. It only began.

Racism did not end with the civil rights movement. It only grew stronger.

Racism did not end with the Voting Rights Acts. It only festered.

Racism did not end with our first black president.

The white officials just came up with a plan to move the voting polls out of the Black communities, therefore, making it harder for Blacks to get to the polls. Thus, making it harder for Black folks to vote.

We, the mothers of black children, especially our sons, cannot breathe for we are always cognizant of what could happen to our sons – just because of the color of their skin. This is the reality of living in the United States of America. Of course, you have heard it said many times that America is NOT a racist country.

However, do not believe what is said, but watch the ACTION! We know that our sons are not allowed to make mistakes or given a second chance, as whites males are. This is a fact and not an opinion. Did not God make man in His image? Then, what right do other people have to stand in judgement on the color that God has given to some of his children.

Submissions Continued from previous page I was taught and remember singing in Sunday School that “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red and yellow, black and white all are precious in his sight.” Children grow up, but their color remains the same. How dare one race looks down on another simply because of the color of one’s skin. The white man did not make himself nor can he make anyone else. They have no right to say I am going to treat you unfairly because I do not like your color. You must know and remember that God made man in his image. So, how can a white person say because of the color of your skin, I am not going to treat you like I treat someone who is white. God did not give you that authority. And are you saying that God did not know what he was doing when he made men of many colors? Just like he set the rainbow in the sky with different colors – and the colors in the rainbow cannot be changed, he made men of different colors – and the color of men cannot be changed.

We must ask ourselves, “What are we doing to combat Racism?”

What are we doing as neighbors, friends, mothers, fathers, lovers, teachers, politicians, teammates: Our fellow humans? Are we, in the words of the late Congressman, John Lewis, getting into “good trouble?”

A nation built on the blood, sweat, and bodies of our black ancestors is now a place where black Americans cannot breathe.

It is unacceptable.

The people above may have died in different ways, some by police force, some by white “vigilantes,” but none of them deserved to die.

Americans today hold an obsession with crime. Who killed JonBenet Ramsey? Who was the Zodiac Killer?

We want to know why these people were killed, how, and who did it. Just like our attention has been on these mysteries, our attention should be focused on: Why was a black man shot while jogging?

Why was a black woman shot while sleeping?

Why was a black man suffocated to death by someone’s leg?

Why was a black man shot in the back, unarmed, fleeing from his murderer?

Why were these lives thrown away in acts of aggression and unadulterated hatred?

The injustices black Americans are facing are not just a black issue. They are an issue for every American.

Then, in the words of the late congressman, John Lewis, “when you see something that is not right, you have a moral obligation to say something.”

If you do not stand up in the face of wrongdoings, you are no better than anyone else.

If you do not speak up with your voice, then you are wasting that voice.

If you do not stop in your tracks and quake with the idea that our Black brothers and sisters cannot breathe and fear for their lives, then you do not know enough about what is happening in our world.

“Lift every voice and sing” is the title of the Negro National Anthem. We must sing of the change you want to see. Sing of the hope you know future generations will bring if we fix this. Sing of the love you have for your fellow man. Sing for every black person you know. Sing for every black human you do not know.

But in your singing, you must act! As the Bible says in James 1:22, “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only.”

Because if they cannot breathe, they cannot sing nor can they act. But we who are still here must sing and act for them and for future generations.

Do not hide behind any veil of ignorance. Do not walk timidly towards justice because this is not happening in your community. Be outraged for the communities this is happening to and work to ensure it will not happen in yours.

Again, in the words of the late Congressman, John Lewis, “When you see something that isn’t right, you

We black Americans need all the oxygen that other races have. We must sing and act until the choruses of change and justice echo through every street in this nation.

Do not give up.

Do not lose hope.

Do not stop fighting.

Black lives matter now. Let’s act like it.

LA EUTHU Conducts Virtual CME Hall of Fame Induction Submitted by Veda B. Emerson The Louisiana Region, for the past eight years, has annually recognized members of various congregations for outstanding service to the church and to the community. It has always been a formal affair with much “pomp and circumstance.” With the outburst of COVID-19, 2020 has been a year filled with disappointments, redirection, and changes. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” This proverbial phrase is often quoted to encourage optimism in the face of adversity. The Louisiana Region “Empowering Us to Help Us” (EUTHU) committee vowed not to be discouraged but to rise up and show out. The inductees for this year, had been selected and the EUTHU committee was determined to honor the inductees this conference year.

On Sunday, July 12, 2020, a virtual EUTHU Hall of Fame Induction was held at 4:00 PM. The theme for this affair was “Honoring Faithful Servants Yet Working on an Unfinished Agenda.” Rev. and Mrs. Terence Flucas, of the “aMAYSing” Mays Chapel CME Church (Monroe District) served as the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. Rev. Dr. Debra Coleman of Williams Memorial Temple (Shreveport District) offered invocation; and scripture was read by Minister LaQuetta Anderson of Ebenezer CME (Monroe District). Sis. Jackie Wagner, Immediate Past President of the Women’s Missionary Society of Louisiana Region, greeted the group and shared the occasion. The entertainment was provided by Sis. Maya Hudson (Shreveport District). Additionally, throughout the program, Sis. Annetta Garner and Sis. Saundra Roberson served as our technical support and provided videos and still pictures of the inductees and their presenters.

She has worked on several committees [in various capacities, including] chairperson for the 2014 Women’s Conference, Pastor Aide, co-chairperson of the Rainbow Tea (2018) and chairperson of the Pastor’s Anniversary. She enjoys community outreach; visiting the sick and shut-in; feeding the homeless; and uplifting the Kingdom of God in her outreach and service to humankind.

He has served as President of the Lincoln Parish NAACP (from 1996 to present), President of Lincoln Parish Head Start Board and former President of the Lincoln Federal Credit Union.

Dr. Larry Joe Pannell: Bro. Pannell is a lifelong member of the St. Luke CME Church in Shreveport, where he has served in various ministry roles, offices, and positions. He is currently a member of the Steward Board and music ministry. Music has always played an integral role in his life. He was employed as Band Director of the Grambling State University “Tiger Marching Band.” Under Dr. Pannell’s leadership, the Band performed in several Super Bowls and performed for five U.S. Presidents (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W.H. Bush, George Bush, and Barrack Obama). His bands performed in nearly every domed stadium in the nation, as well as internationally.

He pastored other congregations, to include Smith Chapel, East Mission, Miles-Johnson, Mount Canaan, New Zion, and Marshall Chapel, his home church. Rev. Starks served on the Louisiana Region Joint Board of Finance for 25 years and as the Regional Director of Evangelism. Professionally, cooking for the community and the church was another ministry. He owned and operated Starks Barbeque for 40 years. He served as Executive Director of Socialization, Inc., a nonprofit advocate for the low-income and youth in the Shreveport community.

Bro. Lugene Francis: A member of New Hope CME Church, Bro. Francis serves faithfully as a Trustee, Usher, Class Leader, and in any other capacity he is asked to serve. On many occasions, he helped the Missionary Department prepare food boxes for the needy and would help with the upkeep of the cemetery. Even though he was not a carpenter, Bro. Francis built and erected a cross in the high ceiling over the baptismal pool in the sanctuary. His love for the church and being a witness for the Glory of Christ have always been in the forefront of his life at New Hope.

Toward the end of this virtual program, Presiding Elder Griffin introduced the special inductee for the 2020 Hall of Fame.

Mr. Lugene Francis This award was given to Elder Arnold Burks Caesar, Sr. of the Minden District. In 1958, he answered the call to preach the gospel. The ministry of Elder Caesar, in the CME Church, has been extensive. He has faithfully served as a local pastor of CME congregations. During 1962-1968, he pastored several churches in the Monroe District. He was later appointed to the South LA Region, at Bethel CME Church (1968-1978), and appointed Presiding Elder to the Crowley and New Orleans Districts (1974-2007). He also served as Chairperson of the Joint Board of Finance in Rev. Arnold B. Caesar the South LA Region. Elder Caesar was transferred to the LA Region and appointed to Lane Chapel in Shreveport, LA (2007-2009) and as Chairperson of the Joint Board of Finance in the LA Region. In 2009, he was transferred to Mays Chapel (2009-2010) and appointed to the Minden District as Presiding Elder. In 2010, he was appointed pastor of SpringHill CME of Ringgold while continuing to serve as Presiding Elder of Minden District. Elder Caesar has been recognized as a dedicated leader, who provides awareness, teaching and administrative skills to the people he serves.

ANDERSON CHAPEL HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL CULTURAL FAIR Submitted by Fannie Lampley, Local WMS President

Anderson Chapel CME hosted its second Annual Cultural Fair under the leadership of Mrs. Barbara Anderson, our Fine Arts Secretary. The Rossie T. Hollis Children’s Department, ages 2-11, participated in the Cultural Fair; and the Mattie E. Coleman Youth Department, ages 12-17, also participated under the leadership of their respective Secretaries, Mrs. Carol Moody and Mrs. Johnnie Anderson. Together, we work under the capable leadership of the local Women's Missionary Society President, Mrs. Fannie L. Lampley, and our vice-President, Mrs. Willa Terry.

The purpose of the cultural fair, as stated by Mrs. Anderson, is to expose our children to other cultures and to teach them to do research, as this will become their project. The children and youth do the extensive research, once the country has been decided. According to Anderson, exposure at a young age is vital to the growth of children.

The participants must not only do research, but also be aware of important facts concerning the area researched and develop the ability to share this information with the judges. The judges are responsible for asking questions of the participants to test their ability to articulate and share background information on the countries they are representing.

We thank the parents for allowing the young people to participate.

The Reverend Doctor Weldon G. Thomas, Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel (United States Air Force), Interred Submitted by Marilyn Drew Thomas

The Reverend Doctor Weldon Thomas, former pastor of the New Bethel CME Church in Rochester, New York, and former Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserves, passed from this life on February 10, 2019, and was interred in a military service in Arlington National Cemetery on July 24, 2020, at 1:00 p.m.

Weldon Gregory Thomas was born in Annapolis, Maryland on December 16, 1954. He was the oldest son of Peggy Janetta Thomas and James Weldon Thomas. He was also one of the oldest grandchildren of the late Samuel and Beulah Adams and Arie and James Thomas.

Throughout his life, his personal life and professional career were intertwined in love, kindness, sincerity, and a humble spirit. He kept God in his life as a guiding force that he acknowledged, enabled him to enjoy the blessings of his family, friends, and Rev. Dr. Weldon G. Thomas a vast network of professional associates as he achieved wide ranging professional achievements. His gifts of compassion, a spirit of discernment, and keen counseling skills served him well in pastoral ministry, as a biblical scholar, teacher, and community activist in the college and military chaplaincy.

Weldon loved teaching and valued education having overcome learning challenges early in life. He earned his Doctor of Ministry at Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan College, Masters at Princeton Theological Seminary, and Bachelors at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The foundation of Weldon’s joy in life was family. He was a core link in his large extended family and his five brothers and sisters. Weldon created his ideal nuclear family with his soulmate Marilyn when they met while working together for the Close Up Foundation in 1978. Weldon and I simply adored each other.

The family of Lieutenant Colonel Weldon G. Thomas thanks each and every one for their prayers of comfort in preparation for this final ceremony and resting place in Arlington National Cemetery. He, however remains in our hearts forever. Special thanks to St. John CME Church, Rev. Marcus Rogers, Rev. Alfred Harrison, Mrs. Sandra Boatman, Ms. Claudette Wilson, and Mrs. Veronica Long. We are most appreciative to all who continue to remember our family in your prayers.

All are invited to join in a worship service and fellowship at St. John CME Church, at a later date, when the pandemic crisis allows a return to normalcy and in person church attendance.

Prophetic Ministry (Part 1 of 2) Submitted by Thomas B. Slater, Pastor St. Paul CME Church, Athens, GA

We live in a time when a prophetic ministry is badly needed. A prophetic ministry is not one which predicts the future, but one which evaluates the present and speaks truth to power when the community has gone astray. The prophetic model is not Hananiah, the prophet who preached to the choir, but Jeremiah, the prophet who spoke the truth without regard to whether it was popular, or potentially detrimental to one’s career, or even endangered one’s life. A prophetic ministry is peoplecentered and not institution-centered. By peoplecentered, I mean a worldview which values the social and psychological well-being of human beings over against social institutions, whether those institutions are governmental, cultural/ethnic, business, political or religious.

Scripture must be the foundation of a prophetic ministry. Scripture is the foundational story of God’s interaction with the human community throughout history. All other stories find their beginning, their ending and their meaning in Scripture, both literally and figuratively. Tradition, or Church history, is important, but it must never become as essential or as influential as Scripture.

Tradition is a soap opera where we find the Church striving and failing repeatedly to live up to the ideals of Scripture. This is not to say that Scripture is perfect. It is not, but even in its imperfection, the voice of God can be heard. Tradition wants to replace God’s voice with its own voice. When ministers do not keep their vows and the Church covers it up, tradition has replaced God. When politics replace piety, tradition has replaced God. When the denominational shield becomes sacrosanct, tradition has replaced God.

Tradition often gives us models to follow, but it also gives us examples to avoid. The Church has gone astray most often when it has forgotten to put people before institutions. For example, it turned its head during the Spanish Inquisition, during the persecution of Catholics by the British government in Ireland in the 19th and 20th centuries, during slavery in the United States, during apartheid in South Africa and

during the abuse of women and children

by Christian ministers through the ages. In each of these instances, the Church loved status more than decency; profit more than prophecy; being a respected institution more than being a religious inspiration. Fear of what people might think became more important than living by faith.

Scripture often requires us to live by faith by not giving us simple answers or by giving us conflicting answers (see Matthew 17:9-13; John 1:1921). However, it is also true that Scripture continues to inspire, inform and reform our lives in ways that give life meaning. Many believe that only a perfect God can use an imperfect medium to reveal God’s perfection to the world. Scripture points to a Reality beyond all other realities, God Almighty. In so doing, humans gain an insight into life at its core and in the process receive the revelation, the reason for living and the meaning of life.

At its core, Scripture is about human relations and human relationships. For me, human relations refer to co-workers, casual exchanges which one could live without, while human relationships refer to primary interactions which we cannot avoid, for better or worse, which include family members and those who have become like family. Yes, Scripture is about God, but it is also about humans: what inspires us, what frightens us, what motivates us, what/who draws our attention, etc. This is because it is easier to believe in God and to worship God than to live with other humans. Our own desires cause us to hurt others or our insecurities allow others to hurt us.

We live by grace without being gracious. We inflict pain without intending to do so. We give love and attention to those who do not need it and neglect those who do. And this is on our good days.

The Rev. Dr. Lisa Allen-McLauren said in a sermon at McAfee School of Theology (where I worked for over 15 years) a few years ago, “Not everyone who praises God wants to serve God.” By this, she meant that ritual is less demanding and more comfortable than ethics. I like to say looking good takes less effort than being good. Biblical religion is all about orthopraxy, ethics informed by faith and faith made manifest in appropriate Christian living. Submissions Continued from previous page Protestant Christianity is a stagnant orthodoxy, doctrinal affirmation which merely gives lip service to ethical behavior or assumes that doctrinal affirmation alone is sufficient to satisfy ethical requirements.

A stagnant orthodoxy is biblically unfaithful and ethically irresponsible. It is biblically unfaithful because The Bible affirms that worship, theology and ethics must go together. It is irresponsible because it provides a shallow, ineffective witness to those outside the Church. Examples from both the Hebrew Bible and also the Greek New Testament affirm the connection among worship, theology and ethics.

In the Hebrew Bible The Law

Again, Scripture is about human relations and human relationships. We find this decidedly in the Covenant Code, the Holiness Code, the ministry of the prophets as well as the ministries of Jesus, Paul and early Christian Jewish writings. We find the Covenant Code in Exodus 20:22-23:19. It immediately follows the Ten Commandments. The Covenant Code has eight distinctive teachings in Exodus 21 and all have to do with interpersonal relationships. A few examples will suffice to demonstrate my point. Exod 21:2-6 relates to the rights of slaves (see also vv. 26-27); 21:7-11, the rights of daughters; 21:16, taking another person’s freedom, and 21:28-32, compensation for accidental injury. It is noteworthy that masters cannot have slaves for an unlimited amount of time and when that time is over the master cannot hold a slave against his will. These slaves are probably persons who have fallen into debt. Their economic situation is not to be exploited (see Gen 47:13-21).

Exod 21:28-32 establishes guidelines for accidental injury by one’s animal and sets rules of compensation.

All these rules define how people should relate to one another in the select dire circumstances. The degree of obedience to these rules indicates to what degree one is faithful to God since these are divine ordinances.

The Holiness Code includes Leviticus 17-26.

Lev 19:9-37 is at the heart of the Holiness Code. It demonstrates that holiness is not primarily a ritualistic or theological endeavor but ethical propriety. At the heart of the Holiness Code is Lev 19:18b: “You shall 30

love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” This teaching has taken on a tradition history all its own.

In this context, “neighbor” meant another Hebrew, but its meaning shall be expanded to include anyone in need by Jesus (Luke 10:25-37).

This section has 14 teachings: 1) Leave gleanings in your vineyards for the poor and foreigners (vv. 9-10; see 33-34); 2) Avoid dishonest behavior (vv. 11-12); 3) Do not oppress/rob neighbors or hired hands (v. 13); 4) Do not abuse those who are physically challenged (v. 14); 5) Do not treat others unjustly, be bigoted or slander others, especially in court; negotiate honestly with and love fellow Israelites (vv. 15-18); 6) An agrarian statute (v. 19); 7) Atonement for abusing a female slave (vv. 20-22); 8) Another agrarian statute (vv. 23-25); 9) Kosher rules, prohibition against witchcraft; barbering rules and prohibition against tattoos (vv. 26-28); 10) Do not prostitute your daughter (vv. 29-30); 11) Avoid mediums and wizards (v. 31); 12) Respect the elderly (v. 32); 13) Treat aliens as if they were native-born citizens, remembering your sojourn in Egypt (vv. 33-34); 14) Do not cheat others but be just with them (vv. 35-37).

These are divinely mandated rules and regulations (see vv. 4, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 25, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, 37). More importantly, 11 of the 14 rules have to do with interpersonal relationships.

In other words, the Holiness Code is more about how we treat one another than about worshipping God. This fact has been lost on many contemporary Americans who believe all they need to do is have “good church.” They have reduced Christianity to a personal relationship between themselves and God. This is unbiblical and self-centered. It is why some self-centered pastors refused to shelter in place: they could not envision not preaching to a crowd. Their egos were more important than the health of their parishioners. It is Mike Pence not wearing a mask supposedly because he wanted to look people in their eyes. What kind of mask is he wearing that covers eyes? Beware of false piety that sounds good but does no good.

Submissions The Prophets

The prophets consistently make the same connection between worship, theology and ethics, praise, belief and practice. Isaiah, Amos and Micah provide three outstanding examples. They all look back at the Covenant Code and/or Holiness Code in order to understand the contexts of their own ministries. Isaiah 1:18-23 contains two beautiful passages. The first is an appeal from God to Israel to come and repair their relationship. Isaiah 1:18 reads, “Come now and let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as pure as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be like pure wool.” Scarlet and crimson represent the blood of their fellow Israelites on their hands whom they have exploited. God promises to cleanse and purify them if they repent of their iniquities. Prosperity or despair awaits them, depending upon their decision (vv. 19-20). Verses 21-23 refer to Jerusalem as an unfaithful consort who has deserted justice and righteousness at the expense of the poor. They are rebels, thieves, and extortionists who do not protect orphans or widows (see Lev. 19:9-10).

One finds a similar message in Amos 5:21-24. In this famous passage, God hates their festivals and well done worship services (i.e., “good church”). Even though they offer the appropriate offerings, they are unacceptable to God because justice and righteousness has become an endangered species in the community of faith. In other words, since their ethical behavior fell short of God’s requirements, their worship was unacceptable. God’s indictment derived from their failure to be just with their neighbors (cf. 4:4-5; 5:45). Good “church” and good ethics go together. They complete one another. One without the other is meaningless. The worship of God and the love of others are two sides of the same coin.

Our final example comes from Micah 3:9-12 (see also 6:6-8). God accuses the leaders of Israel of hating justice and perverting fairness. They have built a society based upon exploiting fellow Israelites. Rulers, priests and prophets use their offices for economic gain and not to promote righteousness, while declaring that they are “blessed and highly favored.” All this occurs in contrast to Lev. 19:13-18. “Therefore, Zion shall become a plowed field and Jerusalem shall become a dump heap and the mountain of the Lord’s house a rotten mess because of you” (Mic 3:12). God’s judgment comes because the institutions which should have protected people from harm actually became the means of their deprivation and exploitation. All three prophets railed against social injustices which [robbed] people of their rights, dignity and very livelihood. The prophets of God (as opposed to the prophets of privilege) spoke truth to power and did not back down from calling evil “Evil.” … to be continued (Translations of Scripture are all mine.)

Griffin Prevails through Prayer, Perseverance, and Persistence Submitted by Tyrone and Vernessa Griffin Tylynn Griffin is a 2020 graduate of Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, and Brock School of Business, Samford University. Tylynn graduated with a Juris Doctor, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration, in May 2020 in a virtual commencement ceremony on August 15, 2020. While attending Samford University, Tylynn was active in the Cumberland Honor Court as Associate Chief Justice, Black Law Students’ Association Executive Board, and the Judge James Edwin Horton Inn of Court. She was also a Merit Scholar and achieved the honor roll.

Tylynn Griffin is a member of Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Uptown, Birmingham, Alabama.

She is active in her local church, participating in several ministries including: Steward Board, Young Adult Ministry, CIT Ministry, and Mass Choir. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tyrone and Vernessa Griffin.

Although the current pandemic has shifted her mode of celebration, her faith enabled her to persist through the presented challenges and push towards her purpose. Tylynn remains encouraged about her future and hopes to inspire others to feverishly chase after their goals and dreams, no matter the circumstance.

Thayer Johnetta Dortch Earns PhD Submitted by Rev. Jerrell C. Hicks

Thayer Johnnetta Dortch earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Department of Humanities/English from Clark Atlanta Univer­sity on May 18,2020. Due to social distancing practic­es, the degree was conferred virtu­ally, with a commencement scheduled later this year in December.

Dortch is a 2008 honors gradu­ate of Talladega High School and a 2010 graduate of Talladega Col­lege, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, complet­ed her studies in three years, grad­uated summa cum laude, and was class valedictorian at the age of 19. In 2012, Dortch graduated with honors from Marymount University (MU) in Virginia, where she earned a Mas­ter of Arts degree in literature and language.

During her studies at Clark Atlanta, Dortch served three years (l-r): Dr. Floretta J. Dortch, Attorney Clarence Dortch III, Esq., Dr. Thayer J. Dortch, and Rev. as an adjunct faculty member teaching English composition and Jerrell C. Hicks. was inducted into the Alpha Beta Beta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Soci­ety.

Dortch credits the great faculty at Talladega College, Rutgers Uni­versity, Marymount University and Clark Atlanta University for their guidance and teachings.

Mt. Zion CME Church of Sharon Hill, Darby Township, Pennsylvania, under the Pastorate of Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr., was recently honored by the Board of Commissioners of Darby Township, Pennsylvania, with a historic banner. Commissioner Marvin Smith presented the banner that hangs prominently outside the church on the corner where all can see.

Mt. Zion is an integral part of the Township and the surrounding community. At one time in our history, the church served as the graduation venue for the local Jr-Sr high school. Mt. Zion was also the meeting place for many community meetings and rallies. At one time, our Sunday Church School was the largest in the area and the Philadelphia District. We currently sponsor one of the largest and well-stocked food bank ministries in Delaware County. Mt. Zion is considered the community church. We open our doors to all who wish to enter to worship a true and living God! In 2021, we will be celebrating our 125th Church Anniversary and founding. Let Mt. Zion rejoice! Zion and wife of our beloved Pastor, Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr. Lady Parker was honored during our annual outdoor service held on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Normally the lodge would hold a luncheon for the honorees, but due to the pandemic, Lady Parker was showered with love and a lovely plague during our worship experience. Lady Parker was honored for her unselfish help and activities that she has afforded the lodge and members of our church community. This is a well-deserved honor for our First Lady. We love you, Sis. Aberdeen academic questions the evidence for rapid growth of ‘orthodox’ Anglican churches in sub Saharan Africa Submitted by Jo Milne University of Aberdeen

New research published by an Aberdeen academic has drawn into question claims that churches in the global south have experienced a growth in new converts as a result of their ‘orthodoxy’, particularly when it comes to the LGBTQ movement.

Andrew McKinnon, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Aberdeen, reports his findings in a paper recently published in The Journal of Anglican Studies.

He examined the figures claimed for membership of The Church of Nigeria and the Church of Uganda, often held up by their leadership as examples of growth that comes from upholding ‘biblical values,’ like monogamous heterosexual marriage.

Dr McKinnon said: “The Anglican churches in the global north have on the whole at least shifted their positions in the 38

Ecumenical News direction of welcoming to LGBTQ persons in the church, albeit with pockets of resistance, some relatively large and others very well organised.

“Bishops in sub Saharan Africa, by contrast, have redoubled their condemnation of same-sex relationships. Proponents of such a conservative position on sexuality often claim that these churches are experiencing phenomenal growth from new converts, a product of their ‘orthodoxy’ of which abhorrence of homosexuality is taken as the litmus test.

“My recent research shows why that is highly unlikely to be true, at least in two of the largest Anglican churches in the world.”

The Church of Nigeria is typically said to have 20+ million members, and the Church of Uganda, eight million members.

Dr McKinnon explored these claims using statistical estimates drawn from nationally representative surveys and concluded that based on all available data, around 7.6 million Nigerians in 2016 called themselves Anglicans when asked—about 4% of the population.

In Uganda, he found that more people identify with the church than is usually assumed, about 10.9 million people in 2016, equating to around 27% of the population and making Uganda the largest Anglican-identified population in sub-Saharan Africa.

But when Dr McKinnon analysed these numbers in conjunction with figures from the National Population and Housing Census (Uganda), he says the evidence shows that the proportion of the population that identifies as Anglican is in steep decline. Although the absolute number of Anglicans is growing because of population increase in Uganda, each year a smaller percentage of the population identify as Anglican.

He added: “We can see from an analysis of population that, even with room for error in the estimate, there is only the remotest chance that the population of Nigerians that identified as Anglican in that year could have exceeded 11.7 million, dramatically fewer than the church claims for itself.

“Similarly in Uganda claims of growth appear exaggerated. I can find no evidence of net growth from conversion in either province in recent decades. That does not mean there are no converts to Anglicanism but that these are offset - or more than offset - by defections to other religious identities.

Dr McKinnon says his research findings add a new dimension to claims that Anglican church leaders in sub Saharan Africa are holding onto their members as a result of a rejection of LGBTQ values.

“Sexuality is a focal point of disagreement and dispute in the global Anglican Communion but the evidence I have found suggests that claims of numerical success as a rejection of Western values made by the Anglican churches of Nigeria and Uganda, and sometimes their advocates in the global north, is not backed up by the statistical evidence,” he added.

In both contexts Anglicans face stiff competition from Pentecostalism and many Pentecostal and charismatic competitors in Nigeria and Uganda are rampantly anti-gay. This may, in fact, be part of the explanation for these churches’ hardening positions on sexual minorities, along with a political context in which gay people are often used as convenient scapegoats.

Thus part of the conflicts within Anglicanism may be an after-echo of church leaders in sub Saharan Africa attempts to hold their members. Their challenge is to avoid losing more members by association with churches in the global north who are seen to have morally questionable ‘western values.’

For as long as the Covid-19 crisis lasts, Anglicans and Episcopalians will be finding other things to concern themselves with, to disagree about, and, hopefully, given the challenges, to help one another with. When the dust from the pandemic settles, I have no doubt that sexuality will once again become a focal point of disagreement and dispute in the global Anglican Communion. The theologians can debate whether proportional growth is a good indicator of a church ‘walking in the truth’, or decline a sign of having departed from that path. Whatever their answer, the evidence suggests that it is probably not a claim that the Anglican churches of Nigeria and Uganda, nor their advocates in the global north, should be making in the disputes about sexuality.

Joining the Great Cloud

Mrs. Nita Threadgill

Mrs. Nita Lee Edmond Threadgill, 74, of Texarkana, Arkansas, died Thursday, July 10, 2020, in Texarkana, Texas.

Mrs. Threadgill was born July 1, 1945, in Texarkana, Arkansas, to the late Robert Edmond Sr. and Pauline Walker Edmond.

She retired from Southwestern Electric Power in Texarkana, Texas, where she worked in the Operations and Engineering Department for thirtysix years, six months, seven days and four hours.

She was a faithful member of Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and was a strong pillar of the church. Her wisdom, knowledge, and leadership will be truly missed and can never be replaced. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Edmond Sr., and mother, Pauline Walker Edmond.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her son, Derrick S. Threadgill (Little Rock, Arkansas); her daughter, Shuntonia D. Threadgill Pree (Texarkana, Arkansas); two brothers: Robert Edmond, Jr. (Texarkana, Arkansas) and Dennis Looney, Sr. (Flint, Michigan); two grandchildren: Kionna Q. Threadgill, (Little Rock, Arkansas) and Trey R. Pree (Texarkana, Arkansas); and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Memorial Gardens, Texarkana, Arkansas, with Rev. Anthony Ware as the Eulogist and Officiant. Interment followed at Memorial Gardens in Texarkana, Arkansas, under the direction of Lyles Funeral Home, Inc.
