Pentecost in the Light of CRT There is much that can be addressed at this period in our history, especially here in the United States of America. There is unrest and disagreement in practically every facet of society. This month I want to say a word about the banning of books from schools, libraries, and even bookstores, with rumors of targeting online sellers as well. The primary objects of censure are those books that are alleged to promote what is known as critical race theory (CRT). Variously described, depending on who is being asked, the term is generally defined as an argument or position that race is not a biological feature but is a social invention designed to oppress particularly and primarily people of color. Further, the concept and debates surrounding the theory are not limited to the United States but have a global presence.

This basis is seen in the racist and prejudicial actions of majoritywhite-owned or managed institutions, such as banks and lending institutions, educational institutions and systems, sports franchises, agricultural agencies, and even consumer and retail marketers, as they wield and execute their power and influence in the development of governmental, economic, social, and cultural policies designed to keep them in power, to prevent the spread of truthful knowledge, and to continue the oppression and subjugation of those they have "othered."

They are seeking to ban books, any books, that show them or their ancestors in the negative light of the dark evils they have committed throughout the world in the name of what they themselves claimed to be a biological fact and termed "race."

In general, the books that have been or are being proposed to be banned tell the stories of persons who have stood up against the odds in spite of the oppression, pain, and sometimes death that it cost them. Not all of them were victorious or successful in this life, but they continue to stand as inspiration to those who remain in the quagmire of racism, and so they continue as objects of hatred and opposition by those who would bury their stories, silence their voices, and even erase their names from the collective human memory. If this ignorant, anti-CRT movement is allowed to continue, just think of the body and wealth of knowledge that will be lost to students and to the general public, including: (1) the value to life in this world through scientific and intellectual contributions added by persons of all races, ethnicities, and nations, (2) the knowledge that can foster understanding and goodwill between all people, and (3) the development of genuine feelings of self-pride, self-love, and self-encouragement.

My brothers and sisters, this must not happen. CRT is not the gospel, but those who love the gospel of Jesus Christ should have some affinity for CRT. We must collectively and individually, as a denomination and as individual citizens, do our part to halt the murderous onslaught on our heritage and history. Call or write your governmental representatives and use the power of your vote, join or organize a protest, share your books with others, organize a book club, enhance or build a church library, have conversations about the importance of diversity, teach our history and CRT in our churches as we once did, advocate for those who are oppressed. You may not do any of these because you have other ideas, but DO SOMETHING. The Pentecost event shows in crystal clear reality God's vision for all humanity, inviting all to receive and to share with all others the life and the resources that God alone supplies. IF YOU DON'T believe in the value, worth, humanity, and dignity of all people, I am glad to know that GOD DOES. Celebrate Pentecost! Celebrate your life in Christ!

Celebrate with the joy of the Lord, the people you meet and see every day. And pray for and love those who dismiss you and your story as insignificant. They, too, are children beloved of God.

Connectional Interests The CME Church receives $1.25 million Grant for Nurturing Children Initiative

Contact: Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, Email: BishopJeffersonSnorton@TheCMEChurch.org The Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church has received a five-year grant of $1.25 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to help establish the “Reimagining Children’s Ministry” program. The program is funded through Lilly Endowment’s Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer Initiative. The aim of the national initiative is to support faith-based organizations as they help children grow in faith and deepen their relationships with God. Through this program, the CME Church will work with a selected group of local congregations over a four year period to strengthen their children’s ministry and children’s participation in worship and prayer.

Participating congregations will also receive mini-grants to purchase educational materials and technology for their children’s ministry. In addition, the program will create liturgical resources that are both culturally sensitive and adaptable for use with children with learning disabilities. Beginning in 2024, the program will release a new resource packet each year of the grant and these resources will be available for use in all local congregations.

Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, the Grant Administrator stated: “Through this program we will establish best practices for effective ministry to children. By focusing on worship and prayer, we ensure that the next generation is equipped with a spiritual understanding of the faith and have the opportunity to actively engage in congregational life. Finally, in the development of resources, we will be utilizing a variety of formats – written, audio-visuals and technology applications – for ministry, instruction and activities with children.” The program will work in collaboration with the CME Department of Christian Education and Formation and its General Secretary, Dr. Carmichael Crutchfield.

Lilly Endowment is making nearly $32 million in grants through this invitational round of the Nurturing Children initiative. The grants are funding efforts to help organizations develop new and/or enhance existing programs that support congregations as they design worship services and prayer practices that more intentionally and fully engage children. The CME Church is one of 26 organizations taking part in the initiative. They represent and serve congregations in a broad spectrum of Christian traditions, including mainline Protestant, evangelical, Catholic, Pentecostal, Black church, Hispanic and Asian traditions. Many organizations also serve churches that describe themselves as nondenominational, ecumenical and multidenominational.

Lilly Endowment launched the Nurturing Children initiative in 2022 as part of its commitment to support efforts that strengthen the religious education and formation of children and enhance the vitality of Christian congregations.

Addi�onal Informa�on about the Nurturing Children’s Grant: A message from Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton Thank you for all the interest in the most recent grant received by the CME Church! I am overjoyed to see so many of our churches interested in developing or expanding their ministry to children. Below are some basic facts about this grant and the program it will fund.

1. The name of the CME program is “Reimagining Children’s Ministry”. This program will be part Lilly Endowment, Inc.’s “Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer” ini�a�ve.

2. The program design is very strict in order to meet the funder’s criteria.

3. The program focus is on prayer and worship with children ages 6-11. An addi�onal focus is on how to include children with learning disabili�es.

4. Our primary goal is to create resources that can be used by all churches throughout the denomina�on. These resources will be culturally sensi�ve, age appropriate, inclusive and consistent with CME beliefs. The program’s aim is to study what types of resources best meet the needs of children ages 6-11, including those with learning disabili�es.

5. We have only received no�ce of the award. No funds have actually been received yet.

6. There will be no funding available for needs or requests that fall outside of the grant’s program design.

7. The program will not begin un�l Fall 2023. The first steps will be to organize all of the things needed to support the program (staff, legal documents, training materials, website, etc.)

8. Par�cipa�on in the program by 12-15 local churches will be by invita�on, although there will be a process by which local churches can express interest in par�cipa�on. No�ce of this process will be sent out in late summer 2023.

9. There will be an extensive selec�on process because the local church and its children’s ministry leadership must meet program criteria and commit to being a part of the en�re four-year study.

10. The role of par�cipa�ng churches is to assist in the development of resources materials, to use those materials in their new or current children’s ministry, and to report results that hopefully demonstrate an increase in children’s par�cipa�on in worship and in understanding and using prayer.

11. There will be small grants of around $1000 available for par�cipa�ng churches to purchase materials they need to implement the program. There are no funds available for local churches that are not a part of the study.

12. Par�cipa�on guidelines are strict because we must train par�cipa�ng church leaders, collect data and file reports on the progress of the program.

While the number of local churches who will par�cipate ac�vely in the program will be a small group, we believe all local CME Churches will see the benefits and will have access to resources that will help them reimagine their children’s ministry. The Program Development Office will con�nue to seek other grants to assist other local churches with their needs for computers, materials, etc. However, to par�cipate in any future programs or grants, local churches need to be able to demonstrate they have a sound program design, a record of good financial stewardship, and the commitment of the leadership and membership of the local church.

I am available to present a session on “Equipping Your Local Church for a BOLD Future with Faith-based Funding” to local churches, presiding elders’ districts, or annual conferences, virtually or inperson to provide further guidance. Whose Mission are we on?

“I will do so, the Lord being my helper.” This is the response in all phases of ordination in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Although the un-ordained people of God may not utter these words, it is a good practice to remember where our help comes from: “The Reign of God.” Brian P. Stone’s Evangelism After Christendom helps us to rethink evangelism by asking the question, “Whose mission are we on when we consider the seriousness of evangelism?”

Some would argue it is the mission of the church. This may be the reason local church evangelism is not effective. Stone also argues that the focus of the church should be: (1) the power of God demonstrated through obedience, (2) the love of God and neighbor demonstrated through the Holy Spirit, and (3) the beauty of holiness aesthetics more than just apologetics involving an epistemology.

Are we wrestling with the same question posed earlier, “Whose mission are we on?” Much more than individualistic thought, the church community must become and remain the church that is on a mission for the Lord. The Holy Spirit leads the church and community of believers. We must practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, forgiveness, repentance, worship, and what Jesus calls the greatest of all commandments, love.

We must love God with every fiber of our being and love our neighbors with the same love we have for ourselves. When the church practices the love, peace, joy, and victory that [we] preach, then we can live out its true meaning for assembling. However, we cannot do this alone; we need the help of the Lord.

In addition, as the mission becomes much clearer, we will not need gimmicks and tricks to compete with the love and concern for the reign of God to bring others to Christ. The Lord will help us when we call upon Him. So, Whose Mission are you on?

Teaching Pentecost

Pentecost is the culminating Sunday of Easter, rooted in the ancient Jewish celebration of the five (Penta) books of the Law. It is historically named the birthday of the Church. The Day of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter. A welcoming of the Holy Spirit is remembered, and the spread of the good news through a divinely empowered Church becomes the center of attention. In this season, called the Season after Pentecost, the Church enters a time of immersing itself in the Gospels, the acts of Jesus, the acts of the early Church, the acts of the Church throughout history, and welcoming the Holy Spirit.

We celebrate Pentecost Day in the church as a reminder of the day that the Holy Spirit was poured out on Jesus’ followers gathered in Jerusalem. According to Luke, the Spirit was poured out on those who Jesus had ordered to not leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father (Acts 1:4a). He also told them “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) These scriptures lead us to the Day of Pentecost.

The story recorded by Luke in Acts 2 describes a powerful wind of tongues of fire as the Holy Spirit was poured out on those gathered in one place. Before the events of Pentecost, which occurred a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection, there was no reference to the journey of his followers that could be meaningfully called “the church.” It has been said that it is the pouring out of the Spirit that brings the church into existence. Thus, it is referred to by many as the Birthday of the church.

Pentecost provides a plethora of teaching for preachers of the Gospel as well as Christian educators in the church. The Book of Acts is an excellent source for teaching the history of the Church. It allows Christians, young and old, to explore and exercise their faith in a God who sends the Holy Spirit in astounding ways to empower those who believe to do remarkable things.

One question that can be explored in teaching Pentecost in the Church is: “What difference does it make for us today that the first Christians were filled with the Holy Spirit almost two millennia ago on the day of Pentecost?

Mark D. Roberts in his article, “What is Pentecost? What Does It Matter?” offers four ways in which Pentecost matters today: 1) The Presence and Power of the Spirit What happened on the day of Pentecost continues to happen to Christians throughout the world, today, though not usually in such a dramatic fashion of winds and tongues of fire. However, God still pours out the Spirit on all who put their faith in Jesus Christ and become his disciples (Romans 8:1-11) ...

Personal Implications: Pentecost presents us with an opportunity to consider how we are living each day ...

Are we relying on the power of God’s Spirit? Are we an open channel for the Spirit’s gifts? Are we attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit? Is the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) growing in our lives? ... Many Christians, live in the presence and power of the Spirit, but only to an extent. We are limited by our fear, our sin, our low expectations, not to mention our tendency to be distracted from God’s work in us. Pentecost offers a chance to confess our failure to live by the Spirit and to ask the Lord to fill us afresh with his power.

2) The Central Role of God’s Church in the World In theory, the Spirit could have been poured out on the followers of Jesus when they were not gathered. There are surely times when the Holy Spirit touches an individual who is alone in prayer, worship, or ministry to others. But

Continued from previous page the fact that the Spirit was given to a gathering of believers is not incidental. It underscores the centrality of the church in God’s work in the world … The Holy Spirit is not only given to individuals, but also, in a sense to the gathered people of God. Thus, in 1 Corinthians 3, the Apostle Paul observes that the church is God’s temple and that the Spirit dwells in the midst of the church. (3:16-17) In 1 Cor 6:19-20 we find a complementary emphasis on the dwelling of the Spirit in individual Christians.

Personal Implications: Many Christians, especially those of us who have been influenced by the individualism of American culture, live as if the church is useful but unnecessary. We seem to believe that if we have a personal relationship with God, everything else is secondary. But Pentecost is a vivid illustration of the truth that is found throughout Scripture: the community of God’s people is central to God’s work in the world. Thus, Pentecost invites us to consider our own participation in the fellowship, worship, and mission of the church. It is a time to renew our commitment to live as an essential member of the body of Christ, using our gifts to build the church and share the love and justice of Christ with the world.

3) The Multilingual Nature and Mission of the Church On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered believers in Jesus to praise God in many languages that they had not learned in the ordinary manner. (Acts 2:5-13) Symbolically, this miracle reinforces the multilingual, multicultural, multiracial mission of the church. We are to be a community in which all people are drawn together by God’s love in Christ. As Paul writes in Galatians 3:28: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”

Personal Implications: … the church has not, in general, lived out its multilingual mission. We are often divided according to language, race, and ethnicity. Pentecost challenges all of us to examine our own attitudes in this regard, to reject and repent of any prejudice that lurks within us, and to open our hearts to all people, even and especially those who do not share our language and culture ... This not easy. But it is central to our calling. And it is something that the Spirit of God will help us to do if we are available.

4) The Inclusive Ministry of the Church After the Holy Spirit fell upon the first followers of Jesus, Peter preached a sermon to help folks understand what had just happened. In this sermon he cited a portion of a prophecy from Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy.

Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants – men and women alike – and they will prophesy. (Acts 2:17-18; Joel 2:28-29) Later, Peter explained that the Spirit would be given to all who turned from their sin and turned to God through Jesus. (Acts 2:38) … For the first time in history, God began to do what he had promised through Joel, empowering all different sorts of people for ministry. Whereas in the era of the Old Testament, the Spirit was poured out almost exclusively on prophets, priests, and kings, in the age of the New Testament, the Spirit would be given to “all people.” All would be empowered to minister regardless of their gender, age, or social position ...

The church of Jesus Christ would be a place where every single person matters, where every member contributes to the health and mission of the church. (see Eph 4:11-16) Personal Implications: Each Christian needs to ask: Am I serving God through the power of the Spirit? Am I exercising the gifts of the Spirit in my life, both in the gathered church and as I live for God in the world?

Pentecost is a time to ask God to fill us afresh with the Spirit so that we might join in the ministry of Christ …

And it is a time to renew our commitment to fulfilling our crucial role in the ministry of God’s people in the world.

Moreover, those of us who hold positions of power in the church should examine our attitudes and actions. Are we encouraging all of God’s people to minister through the power of the Spirit? Are we open to what the Spirit of God wants to do in our churches and communities through his empowered people? Or are we gatekeepers of the church who would even keep the Holy Spirit out of our carefully tended and controlled communities…?

Sharing Your Story of God’s Faithfulness The faithfulness of God is undeniable in our lives. God consistently shows up through good and challenging times and provides for us in amazing ways. We should be careful to remember God’s hand in our lives and should be willing to share our stories of God’s faithfulness to encourage others. We all have a story, and no one can tell your story for you.

Think about where you’ve been, where you are, and how you got there.

Without a doubt, you made it by the grace and faithfulness of God. For just a moment, let your mind run back to all the times the Lord brought you out, brought you through, made a way, out of no way! Think about how the Lord kept you through the storm, protected your children, ushered you forward, restored, revived, and extended mercy. Remember the times the Lord encouraged your heart, gave you hope, met you in your grief, calmed your fears, provided for you, sustained you, dried your tears, healed your body, spoke peace to your mind, disciplined you, and then loved you up.

How many times has God shown His strength in your weakness? How many stories came to mind as you ran through the list? We didn’t mention the things some of us take for granted: the air we breathe, water, food, or shelter.

God provides those things also.

God’s faithfulness is rooted in His love for us. That love shows through His provisions, compassion, power, mercy, and grace. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” This verse speaks about God’s commitment to his children.

Have you ever been in a place where you said God, it’s me again; I need help. I have. Not once, but twice I was surprised with the news that I needed surgery. Those who have experienced surgery may be able to relate; it tends to weigh on your spirit. I remember saying to the Lord, “It’s in your hands, God. If you don’t move, it won’t be done.”

Then, I thanked Him in advance for a positive outcome. True to His word found in Psalm 46:1, God showed up and delivered me safely on the other side of my issue. Praise the Lord! Psalm 91:3 declares that God will protect us from hidden dangers and all deadly diseases. Growing up, I would hear the senior saints praying, thanking God for keeping them through seen and unseen dangers. I didn’t understand unseen dangers then, but I do now.

I stand in awe, thinking about God’s goodness, daily provisions, and keeping power. I wouldn’t take anything for my journey with God. His presence is undeniable; He makes his presence known by showing up like a rushing wind or in a small still voice. God’s faithfulness never falters. Let me say that again; God’s faithfulness never falters; He honors His word and meets us right where we are. I’ve seen Him do it, haven’t you? So, tell it. After all, you are an eyewitness. We all have a story, but the story is not just for us.

We honor God by sharing who He is with others and offering gratitude for what He does in our lives. I encourage you to take a moment and tell others about God’s goodness and faithfulness. Some may think they are making it on their own steam. Sharing helps them recognize God’s presence in their lives and moves them to want to know more about the One who sustains. Sharing your experience gives others the inspiration and courage to share theirs. Take a look around; our communities need a glimpse of God. We can offer that and more. Remember, we all have a story.

Let’s tell them!

Texas College Receives Grant to Enhance Community Broadband Monday, April 10, 2023 Texas College has been named a recipient of the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program (CMC), a subsidiary program of the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The initiative is a $268 million grant program reserved for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) for the purchase of broadband internet access service and eligible equipment or to hire and train information technology (IT) personnel.

Over the period of this grant, Texas College will upgrade its current internet speed/bandwidth from 1 Gbps to a minimum of 10 Gbps or higher for the main Texas College buildings and annex buildings as well. It will allow the institution to partner with the current five residential Fixed Wireless providers who cover 92.8% of Smith County (DC Texas, Skynet Country, AT&T, Texas CellNet and Nextwave) in support of efforts to offer online broadband education, awareness, training, and access to educate households in the local Tyler area, as well as throughout Smith County.

This partnership will be a "win-win," as it benefits the trainees by increasing awareness, skills, access, and equipment. Congruently, such an alliance will also benefit the companies by increasing demand for their services. Equally, the initiative will benefit the community by supporting continued operations of the for-profit community organizations that must function in order for the Tyler, Texas, community to serve as a compatible and conducive habitat for the healthy functioning of our students. However, not-for-profit organizations that support our students and our community will also be included in the effort to make Tyler a broadband connected community.

Texas College’s IT faculty and staff will train student workers and students in IT classes to provide insight and training on how broadband services can improve the management of small-business organizations within the community. Managers and/or employees, as well as volunteers in community-based organizations, will also be trained to use or better use broadband services. The training will be free, but each trainee will sign a pledge to train at least five other individuals. Ultimately, exponential increases will occur in the technological IQ of our faculty, staff, students, and our Tyler community.

Baptiste Returns Home as Director of Bands Tuesday, April 11, 2023 Texas College is pleased to announce that Shawan Baptiste has been named Director of Bands. Baptiste, an alumna of Texas College, brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and education to the Texas College Band, with a tenure of service as a band director and educator that spans over two decades.

With over 20 years of notable and expansive experience in the secondary public education realm, Baptiste joins the College from the Dekalb County School District (DCSD) in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she served as the Director of Bands. As the third largest school district in Georgia, with over 138 schools and centers serving more than 92,000 students, Baptiste's leadership extended throughout the district in a multitude of impactful roles. In addition to her role as Director of Bands, she also served as the Fine Arts Department Chair, as well as provided oversight for the writing and implementation of the district wide K-12 music curriculum. Outside of Baptiste's music-related responsibilities, she also provided instructional support 12

and served as the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Site Coordinator, as well as gave oversight to 9th Grade Transition, which provided intervention and remediation support for ninth grade students in the subject of Math and English Language Arts. Further, Baptiste also served as a College and Career Advisor, which specifically focused on providing post-secondary education and career advancement opportunities to first generation students. Baptiste's Herculean efforts as an educator garnered her DCSD's Teacher of the Year Award in 2018.

As aforementioned, Baptiste is a proud graduate of the College; she received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Texas College in 2009. She then pursued and completed the Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Baptiste also earned the Educational Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.

Despite having joined the College less than one month ago, Baptiste has hit the ground running with an aggressive nationwide band recruitment strategy. Her enthusiasm, expertise, and innovative approach is sure to jolt exciting new life into the program. Texas College excitedly welcomes Shawan Baptiste home.

Miles College Celebrates the Men’s & Women’s Basketball Team Accomplishments Written by Mya Jolly

FAIRFIELD, Al – This past weekend the Miles College Men’s and Women’s basketball teams played in the 2023 SIAC Basketball Championship in Savannah Georgia. The championship games were held on Saturday with the Miles College women falling to the Tuskegee University Women’s Tigers 65-54.

“First and foremost I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach these amazing young women. These young ladies were fantastic and did everything we asked on and off the court. With the young team that we have, expect to see us back in the SIAC championship again next year because we aren’t going anywhere. We thank you for all of the support and please bring it back next year,” said Coach Pete Asmond.

The Miles College Men’s basketball [team] went up against Lane College defeating them 60-46 to bring home the SIAC Championship.

Coach Watson, the head coach of the Men’s Basketball team and Athletic Director, has now won three of his last four visits to the SIAC championship since beginning with the College in 2018. His team showcased their talents, allowing all viewers to see what they can accomplish and what to look forward to in their games in the Division II playoff tournament.

Miles College Men’s Basketball team currently holds one of the eight-seed slots in the Division II tournament and will compete against Nova Southeastern. The Golden Bears finished with a 20-6 overall record and a 15-5 conference record in the regular season.

“This win is validation. The men worked extremely hard and the hard work paid off. Our main goal for the season was to get [to] the point we are at now. We set the goal and we accomplished it, together.

I know the men will continue to make us proud and we are so thankful for the support we’re receiving from everyone,” said Coach Fred Watson.

Famed author and Augusta native Frank Yerby was honored [...] with a state historic plaque March 21, 2023

"Frank Yerby was one of the most accomplished writers of the 20th century," said Corey Rogers, historian for Augusta's Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History. "This marker will serve as a physical reminder of his literary acclaim and international success." Fighting for change: Augusta activist walks in ancestors' footsteps The Georgia Historical Society dedicated the marker that recognizes "Frank Garvin Yerby: King of the Costume Novel" in partnership with the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, the Haines Alumni Association and Paine College.

The marker dedication took place [on March 16, 2023,] near the intersection of Eighth and Hall streets, off Laney-Walker Boulevard.

Yerby (1916-1991), the author of more than 30 novels, began his writing career in earnest shortly after enrolling at Paine in 1933. His first published short story, "Salute to the Flag," appeared in the November 1936 issue of the college newspaper, The Paineite. Yerby graduated Paine in 1937.

Perhaps his best-known novel is "The Foxes of Harrow," published in 1946, which became the first novel written by a Black author to sell more than a million copies. In 1947, by accepting a $150,000 offer from 20th Century Fox, he became the first Black author to have a book purchased by a Hollywood studio for film adaptation. The resulting film, starring Vivien Leigh and Rex Harrison, was nominated for an Oscar. Two more of his novels, "The Golden Hawk" (1948) and "The Saracen Blade" (1952), also were made into films.

The author of more than 30 novels, Yerby died in Spain in 1991. Today, Paine curates the Frank Garvin Yerby File, which contains decades' worth of papers, photos and other mementoes marking Yerby's life.

Frank Garvin Yerby was born in 1916 in Augusta, where he lived on Hall Street and graduated from the Haines Institute and Paine College. Over his lifetime, Yerby published poetry, short stories, and 33 novels. His use of the costume novel, a form of popular fiction, propelled him to international and commercial success. Yerby's novels tackled themes of identity, ambition, and marginalization. Yerby is recognized in the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame.

The marker dedication took place near the corner of 8th and Hall Streets, off Laney-Walker Boulevard in Augusta.

Earth Day: A Call To Awareness!

In Genesis 1:31, God saw everything that God created and declared that everything was very good. Very good suggests that all that God created was purposeful, perfect, flawless, accurate, and precise. God deputized humankind to rule over all the earth and to be responsible stewards by caring for His creation. God also gave humankind permission to eat from The Tree of Life and prohibited eating from The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. After permitting and prohibiting, God issued a penalty for violating the instructions given. The serpent, which was craftier and more deceitful than all other creatures, initiated a subtle temptation which led to disobedience and judgment. Satan told Eve, “You will not surely die.”

This consequential and devastating lie, along with lies like this, continues to dissuade people from obeying God and responding to the groaning and travailing of creation. Lies like this have blinded us to seeing creation and creatures (human and non-human) as inseparable and interdependent. They have simultaneously perpetuated economic greed, ignorance, arrogance, and indifference.

The “you will not surely die” lie continues to lurk in our hearts and lure us away from our God-given assignments.

For this reason I want to express my sincere gratitude to the 2022 General Conference for adopting the Earth Day Resolution. This resolution is a call to advocate, educate, and commit to caring for planet earth. Bishop Thomas Louis Brown, Sr. is leading the way by expanding Earth Day into Earth Month in the Sixth Episcopal District.

His boldness to declare April as Earth Month reflects his episcopal genius and presents him as a key force in the emerging ‘new paradigm’ of Christian Methodism. I am eternally grateful to Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, U.S. Representative for Connecticut's Fifth Congressional District, Rev. Dr. Julio Andujo, and Rev. Dr. Andre Loyd for their cogent support of this resolution.

My attention for the earth and environmental justice was arrested in 1989, during my senior year at 16

Homer High School in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston aroused the residents of Claiborne Parish by presenting what many of us believed to be the dawn of a new day. With more people moving out than moving in, the population of Claiborne Parish was rapidly declining, and businesses were leaving the area. Senator Johnston presented Claiborne Parish as a selected site for a “chemical plant.” This chemical plant was promised to build a stronger economy, a diverse community, and to attract residents. It was a sure answer for a declining community. With limited knowledge about this plant and the much-needed hope within the community, many people welcomed the proposal without reservation.

However, for others the proposal appeared too good to be true. As conversations and community discussions brewed, investigations exposed a harsh reality: It’s a uranium enrichment plant!

This plant had the capacity to contaminate the entire community. To further complicate matters, it was proposed to be built between Forest Grove and Center Springs CME Churches, which are located primarily in African American communities. Thanks to Bishop Marshall Gilmore, (Presiding Prelate at that time), the Louisiana Annual Conference, Citizens Against Nuclear Trash (CANT), clergy, community leaders, and groups beyond Claiborne Parish like Washington-based Nuclear Information for their steadfast opposition to this effort.

Although some residents felt like a dream was passed up, it was later revealed through an investigation that the same plant being proposed nearly destroyed an entire town in Oklahoma. Be careful of serpent-minded politicians who are willing to place poison amid people and yet proclaim, “you will not surely die.”

After graduating from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in 1998, I was appointed by Bishop Othal Lakey to pastor Usher’s Temple CME Church in Fort Valley, Georgia. Upon arrival in Fort Valley, I was

Submissions inspired by their beautiful sanctuary, their remarkable church history and connection with Fort Valley State University, as well as their cordial spirit. I was also deeply challenged by a class action lawsuit which included Usher’s Temple.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Woolfolk Chemical Works, Inc., which was within proximity to Usher’s Temple CME Church, began operating in 1910 as a lime-sulfur plant and had evolved into a full-line pesticide plant formulating pesticides in liquid, dust, and granular forms for the agricultural, lawn, and garden markets. Over time various contaminants heavily impacted the church and the community. Tests conducted by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division in 1985 and 1986 detected metals, pesticides, lead, arsenic, chlordane, DDT, lindane, and toxaphene in on-site soil, ground water, and in an open ditch south of the plant. One member of Usher’s Temple observed seeing strange water, sometimes red and sometimes green, flowing from a nearby ditch. Arsenic was discovered in the attic of several homes, churches, and businesses.

A 1994 class action lawsuit filed by Fort Valley plaintiffs accused three generations of owner-operators of Woolfolk Chemical Works of committing a trespass on their properties, creating a nuisance by contaminating their properties, being negligent by engaging in abnormally dangerous activities (thereby diminishing the value of their properties), conspiring to contaminate the area, and failing to take proper remedial steps to clean up the site. Extensive contamination of the area has caused human health damage. Skin lesions associated with arsenic contamination have been identified in the population. This was environmental and human injustice. Most often, the victims in cases like this receive the least amount of compensation.

The 2022 CME General Conference Earth Day Resolution was a call to awareness and responsibility. This observance reminds us of our obligation to fulfill a Divine assignment. As responsible stewards of God’s earth, our call to awareness must not fall on deaf ears. Individuals and congregations must shun negligence, apathy, and indifference by reading, researching, and rediscovering the life-giving and healing connections we have with God our Creator and all of creation. Jurgen Moltmann (1997), a German Reformed Theologian, further extends a call to awareness in his book, The Source of Life: The Holy Spirit and the Theology of Life.

The church is not there for its own sake, but for the sake of God’s kingdom. The church represents God’s coming kingdom in this broken and disrupted world if it intervenes on behalf of human rights wherever they are infringed: ‘all human beings are created free and equal.’ The church represents God’s coming kingdom if it intervenes on behalf of this earth as a living world, and gives practical realization to the community of creation. The church represents God’s coming kingdom if it stands up for the rights of coming generations today, and makes itself the voice of people who don’t yet have a voice of their own.

Even if no one likes to think universally anymore, the ecclesia universalis - the universal church - is called to life through God’s universal hope and represents that hope. (p. 42) As we engage in Earth Day activities, whether through prayer, community service projects, studying God’s Word, taking field trips, or planting, I pray that we will become increasingly aware and appreciative of God’s Earth. May God grant us the ability to see, and the courage to confront the injustices which subtly destroy individuals and communities. Finally, may the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, which has been identified as God’s tender plant, protect tender plants all over the world.

EIGHTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT GREENVILLE-TEXARKANA DISTRICT CONFERENCE Submitted by Geraline Ray, Reporter Theme: “Be Bold, Be Informed, Be Educated”

Once again, Presiding Elder Diana Casteel showed us how to “Don’t Talk About it, Be About It” with her District Conference program. Wesley Chapel CME Church in Greenville, Texas, was the host church with Pastor Joseph Lawson as host pastor.

The Wesley Chapel Praise Team opened with song and Prayer Coordinator, Rev. Shalanda Williams led us to the “throne of grace.” Sis. Anne Tave graciously welcomed us and the church praise team sang a rendition of “Wonderful Is Your Name,” followed

by Elder Casteel’s presentation of the day’s agenda.

Presiding Elder Diana Castell First, she gave us an overview of the book Start With Why by Simon Sinek and told us why it is relevant to church members. She said that we should be able to explain how our “why” relates to our church position and how we apply ourselves, thusly. We should become more committed and do what we need to do once that question is answered. The Elder also addressed pastors and told them that as leaders, they must do what they want others to do. “Respect the leadership regardless of what you think about them personally,” she spoke. “Understanding your ‘why’ will help you to do what you need. The dynamics of your ministry will change.” Elder Casteel stated further, “The start with the ‘why’ begins with, first, the preacher in charge, next, the church officers, boards and auxiliaries integrated in a six-month plan.” It is easy to see how one might be able to make a profound change in answering their "why” with this direction. The Elder urged all present to purchase and read the book and begin the application to themselves in order to begin an enlightened relevancy to the Church.

Sis. Diana Hardiman, our Greenville/Texarkana Missionary Society president, and Sis. Mariah Williams then presented, respectively, the Adult and Young Adult overview. Sis. Williams, I might add, has been involved with the Missionary Society from childhood to present, thanks to her aunt, Ursula Roberts, having raised her as such.

Sis. Lisa McCullar gave the Usher overview and Sis. Ursula Roberts gave the Stewardess overview. Each of these ladies is the district president of their respective areas.

The Ministers Spouses’ overview was presented by Sis. Linda Lawson, wife of Wesley Chapel’s pastor, Rev. Joseph Lawson. Sis. Cencil Bell, the Region president, gave added support.

Statistician for the East Texas Region, Rev. Gailyn McCurdy, gave much needed guidance for completing the pastors’ end of the year report for the Annual Conference. Hopefully, she won’t have to shake her head and outright laugh at some of the reports this conference year. Her discussion was very helpful.

Rev. Lonnie Bell, treasurer for the Region, also gave an overview and presented information to support our statistician.

Finally, the difference between the fiscal year and the calendar year was repeated by Bro. Terrance Washington, head of the Region Finance Committee, as he addressed additional points to provide a smoother fiscal year for all. Rev. Keith Thomas and Elder Diana Casteel are also part of the committee, Elder Casteel having previously served as the head of this committee.

After all presentations had been made, we went into our Holy Communion service with District Prayer Coordinator, Rev. Shalanda Williams, pastor of Mt. Lebanon CME Church, Pittsburg, Texas. (My church and my Pastor!!) Rev. Williams' sermon title was “The Bread of Life,” based on Matthew 26:11-13. This is a well-known text of when the woman poured expensive oil on Jesus’ hair and was rebuked by the disciples who complained that the oil could have been sold and the money given to the poor.

This is a love story where Jesus forever changed His disciples’ mindset and Geraline Ray and Pastor created a memorial that would be experienced by the senses. Pastor Williams let it be Shalanda Williams known that whenever someone comes into our church, they should feel the love. This determines whether others will come. “You can’t teach what you are not doing.” She exclaimed.

All in all, it was a good day that got even better as the Elder treated us all to a sumptuous lunch.

Submissions WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE, LIVES CAN BE TRANSFORMED “A Helping Hands Message” Former General Secretary, Dr. Clifford L. Harris, Retired Department of Lay Ministries – CME Church

Prior to my retirement as The General Secretary of Lay Ministry, Editor, Rev. Dr. Ore Spragin, invited me to continue providing monthly articles for the Christian Index. My response was that July 2022 would be my last regular monthly article, but that I appreciated him for extending the opportunity. He then gave me the option to provide a writing from time-to-time. To that end, I would like to use the healing of the paralyzed man, who was delivered to Jesus by his friends, as the foundation for this writing.

You know the story, found in Luke’s Gospel, chapter 5:17-24; when the man’s friends could not press their way pass the crowd and enter through the door of the house where Jesus was, they pulled out all of the stops and climbed onto the roof. They then began to remove the shingles and open a hole large enough [that] they could insert and lower their friend, and place him in the presence of Jesus. Because Jesus Was in the House, a transformation took place and a life, along with many others, was changed forever . . . Matthew 9:7-8 describes the saving, healing, and celebration this way: "Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man."

In Ephesians 3, verses 14-20, the Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians refers to another kind of house or home, which is our physical bodies, particularly our hearts. From the Daily Walk Bible verse sixteen says, “Pray that out of his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you the mighty inner strengthening of his Holy Spirit.” Verse seventeen says, “And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love.” To have “inner strengthening” by the Spirit is to have our feelings, thoughts and purposes placed more and more under His influence and direction so that the Spirit can manifest [His] power through us in greater measure. . . “When Jesus Is in the House," - we can Be Bold: Face Now, Embrace Next, and See New, and certainly lives can and will be transformed.

When this transformation truly takes place in us - through and by faith in Jesus, we should be persuaded to share His goodness and grace with others; there should be a reaching out through individual efforts and through the ministries that exist in our churches. When Jesus Is In Every Individual House - as Stewards we will not limit our ministry to the finance room; as Ushers, as hard as it is to stand while everyone else sits, there will be something about the way that one serves that will compel someone to want to know and stand closer to Christ. When Jesus Is In the House, no one will wonder why the Stewardesses serve and why the choir sings to the glory of God! When Jesus Is In the House, we are inclined to develop a dedicated prayer life, for prayer is the fundamental activity of a Christian life, which moves men and women closer to God. Individual and corporate Bible study and regular Church School attendance are strong and natural avenues for developing a transforming faith that allows Jesus to dwell as a permanent resident in our houses (hearts)!

When Jesus Is in the House, truly dwelling in and through us, we can embrace the admonition and appeal of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:1 and know without a doubt, that our behavior is a credit to God’s service. Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., National President of CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference based in Atlanta, Georgia, brought the keynote address at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City (SCLC-GKC). The local chapter celebrated it’s 50-year anniversary on August 28th, 2022 at the Jamison Memorial Temple CME Church.

The state of Missouri is a leader in voter suppression. “We are proud and pleased to host our national president and have him lend his voice in support of our fight here in Kansas City and in Missouri,” said The Rev. Dr. Vernon Percy Howard, Jr., SCLC-GKC President.

Dr. Steel was in Kansas City continuing his work and travels speaking and helping to mobilize SCLC GKC Rally Speaker - SCLC National and inspire local communities to remain steadfast in the important President and CEO, Dr. Charles Steele, Jr. work of protecting our Civil Rights including the right to vote which is the bedrock of the democracy. The national SCLC president and CEO offered a stinging critical analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court’s gutting of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a setback which occurred under the Obama administration in 2013. “That Supreme Court decision tuned us back fifty years and gave the racist states and legislatures across the country the power and freedom to change voting laws which suppress the Black franchise,” said Dr. Steele.

The event marked SCLC-GKC's 50th year of service to the cause of Civil and Human Rights in Kansas City, the region, and the nation. The chapter’s jubilee celebration 20

in 2022 was catapulted by an interfaith service in January and a mass celebration the same month which featured a prophetic challenge by U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II who raised the call for the John Lewis Voting Rights Act legislation to be enacted by the U.S. Congress Now! At the event Dr. Howard led the local chapter in a ceremony installing the Rev. Dr. Faith Allen, senior pastor of Jamison Memorial Temple CME Church, onto the SCLC-GKC Board of Directors. Voter education, registration, and engagement took place at the event with Dr. Steele delivering a stirring and prophetic message to the crowd, stating, “Politics cannot save us, we must save politics. We must fight not for what’s legal. We must fight for what’s right. Slavery was legal, but it wasn’t right. Fight for what is right, and God will be on our side,” stated Dr. Steele, to a roaring rising assembly at the church. Civil rights and faith leaders from across the state, including St. Louis and Jefferson City, were present.

The early years and middle passage of SCLC-GKC in the late 60’s and early 70’s included the launch of “Resurrection City” (Poor People’s City) which was a week-long protest at Mill Creek Park on the cusp of the socially upscale entertainment, dining, and commerce center still known today as the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. SCLCGKC was committed to highlighting and dramatizing the pain and plight of the poor in KC. Over 300 persons camped out in tents during a primarily Black but also multi-racial movement to defend the human rights and human dignity of the poor in KC. Resurrection City launched one week prior to the Missouri primary. The young Cleaver was quoted in the press as saying, “Black and poor people will be waiting … if they (politicians) want our votes they must come to us, and they must come with the intention of giving us the whole thing: total participation in the government, input into the decisions that affect Black people, and a commitment to equality and justice.”

Mentorship is important to help others gain access to opportunities and cultivate their confidence in order to fulfill their purpose in the home, church, and community. A mentor takes an active interest in someone, serves as a support to hear concerns, shares their experiences and wisdom, encourages new ways of thinking, challenges assumptions, and helps mentees learn new skills. A mentor should be someone with a similar spiritual mindset who has accomplished the goals one hopes to achieve. A mentor can be any age, at any level, and in any place. Therefore, mentees should not limit themselves to only those in certain positions in the church but should remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit for guidance. To begin the mentoring process, consider the following as you trust God’s guidance. Have you experienced the faith-building care of a mentor? Do you long for that right now? If you are a young believer, consider making this request of a mature believer in your church. If you have followed Jesus for many years, ask Him if you might take on this role with a younger believer. Can you offer encouragement and wisdom to someone who needs support?

Consider Mary and Elizabeth. Mary—on the angel’s direction—made the difficult trip to see her older relative, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was sensitive to the Spirit’s guidance. Instantly sensing Mary’s condition, she stepped willingly into the role of mentor. She affirmed Mary’s faith and confirmed her calling, so much so that Mary was able to articulate her own song of praise, the Magnificat (Luke 1:39-56).

Many individuals would benefit from a mentor, but don’t know how to ask. Here are tools to get started: 1. One of the ways to choose a mentor is to pray about finding someone you respect, someone who has a spiritual life you want to emulate, or a skill set you want to develop—then simply ask that individual. It can be as simple as approaching the person and saying, “I admire the way you serve and the values you display. Would you be willing to meet with me? I believe I could learn a great deal from you.”

2. Mentees and mentors work best together when they establish mutually agreed-upon goals and objectives. Be honest with the mentor about your goals or aspirations, personal strengths, and areas for improvement.

3. Communication is important. Mentors are there to support you, but you must expect, and accept, honest feedback. Your relationship should foster a safe environment where you both feel comfortable being vulnerable and communicating honestly.

4. Keep an open mind and remember that your mentor is providing advice and constructive criticism with the best of intentions, even if it’s something that is difficult to hear.

Think carefully and pray intentionally about what you want and need from a mentor. This person can not only support you in your spiritual journey, pray with you as you navigate difficult situations, but perhaps can also help you professionally as you build confidence. As I listen and help mentees work through challenges, my role as a mentor is someone they can trust, confide in, seek advice from, pray with, as well as provide a safe space to discuss things they may be uncomfortable discussing with others.

Serving as a mentor and helping others achieve their goals has been fulfilling. While each mentee relationship is unique, the commonality is that I have personally learned something new from every experience. I thank God for those placed in my life who have consistently prayed for me, asked me tough questions, and supported my walk of faith. May God give us opportunities to play the same role in others’ lives. Blessings and peace to you as you seek the Lord in prayer for guidance in building a mentoring relationship.

Harvest Hope Food Drive Sidney Park CME Church Submitted by Margaret Wilson Tipton For their Community Service activity, the Women's Ministry at Sidney Park CME Church, Columbia, South Carolina, chose "Harvest Hope," a local food bank, to benefit from a "giving-back campaign." Members filled boxes of nonperishable food products and delivered to the agency, 300 pounds of food items, which created 1200 pounds of meals for the needy.

MPCO Wellness Check-up Submitted by Elma Holmes Glaze Southeast Alabama Region, Fifth Episcopal District

The MPCO District, better known as the Montgomery, Phenix City, Opelika District of the "Fabulous, Flourishing, Fifth," held its first Health and Wellness event Saturday, February 4, 2023, at St. Paul CME Church, Crawford, Alabama. Of course, the event was a conglomeration of Children, Youth and Young Adult 2023 Celebration activities. The St. Paul CME Church proudly hosted the event with joy. All members in the MPCO District were kindly welcomed to be a part.

Rev. James Q. Smith, Sr. serves as the Presiding Elder, and Rev. Dr. Raynetta Prevo­-Williams is the pastor. Sister Taya Combs, Director of the District Board of Christian Education and Formation, was also in attendance, [and we were excited and] blessed to have several youth and young adults to attend.

The attendees eagerly shared their thoughts and concerns without hesitation as they freely chose [from five groups in which to participate. The groups were]: 1. Learning to identify challenges with self-talk situations 2. Learning how to provide essential time for personal meditation 3. Personal meditation 4. Daily movements 5. Technology The presenters were well prepared; they listen carefully and made sure individuals were given the opportunity to speak. Proudly to say, they were motivational and shared expertise in counseling, healing therapy, Bible reading and prayers. Add to this, internet usage and videos were available for any church group desiring to launch a wellness and self-care program in the future. Tasty nutritional snacks were available and well enjoyed. Meanwhile, Director Combs and Presiding Elder Smith closed the event with positive remarks; their desire is to make the event an annual occurrence.

A Perspective on the Nature of Marriage Counseling in Nigeria Submitted by Ore Spragin Editor, The Christian Index

While traveling to the 2023 Breeding-Montgomery Bible College board meeting and Eastern Regions Joint Annual Conference in Nigeria this past January, I had a layover of about seven hours in the Muritala Mohammed Domestic Airport in Lagos, Nigeria. Not the most traveler-friendly airport for those having to wait outside security until close to their flight time, there were very few seats even in the limited food court. After standing and walking around for almost an hour, I finally was able to sit at a small, round table with a Christian lady whose name I learned was Uzochukwu Uzoeghelu. Her first name means “the way of the Lord,” while her last name means “open doors.” It was time for me to try to build another bridge of understanding.

Uzo, as she asked to be called, is a financial counselor, life-long member of the Anglican church, and a subscribed (certified) relationship and marriage coach. She considers this last one not as a job but as a ministry because she believes God has called her to this work. “The devil has come to steal, to kill, and to destroy. And one of the things I realize that the devil does most times is steal people’s joy. One easy way … is through people’s relationships and marriages: the wrong relationships, the wrong marriages, or making people do the wrong things in relationships and marriages.” She says even the children are not left out of this because many people come together not having a purpose of building something together in partnership but just for fun or out of pressure. This attitude affects society.

She is here “to preach that it is very much possible to be happy and fulfilled in relationships and marriages despite whatever is going on [in the outside world.]”

Uzo began as a marriage coach in 2018 and has been doing this professionally since 2021, receiving her certificate from 24

Lovers and Couples Academy. Her mentor in the academy was trained by TIMFA (The Institute for Marriage and Family Affairs), a U.S.-company based in Sugarland, Texas.

Uzo has coached ten couples and more than 50 single persons via Uzochukwu Uzoeghelu Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Linked-in. She sends daily posts and gives a special message on some specific topic every Friday.

One observation she has made over these five years is that many couples (admittedly against Biblical teachings) enjoy intimacy prior to marriage but afterward find it boring.

Her e-book, Sweet in the Middle, was written to help couples overcome fears and stigmas wrongly associated with having Christian faith and thereby to spice up their relationship. Beginning with her own life and marriage, Uzo says she takes a balanced, intentional approach to counseling, combining both the physical and the spiritual aspects of life.

Marriage customs differ somewhat between the United States and Nigeria, but some things remain the same. For example, from her experience Uzo says, “Most Nigerian females feel that when their sons marry a wife, they have a right to tell the wife what to do. A lot of parents meddle in their children’s marriages.” According to her, this interference affects young couples more than older ones and is not limited to family members only but extends also to members of the community. “Most couples need to know that [contrary to] tradition, marriage should be a partner, yourself, and God.” Still, couples have to deal with their parents with respect and wisdom; like Bible says, “Honor your father and mother that your days will be long … Let them say what they want, but that doesn’t mean you should act on it ...” you must find a way to manage the peace of your home. “They won’t be there when you act on it. They won’t come into your own home and ask, ‘Have you done …’”

She also says that people often come to coaches expressing concern over one issue, but that as coaches they are trained to ask questions to determine if there is not some other thing that is the real problem and then suggest or advise possible solutions, with the decision being left with the client. She added that just as people research and plan for their financial wellbeing, they should do the same when it comes to their relationships.

Submissions When it comes to the expression of roles within the marriage and the larger society, Uzo says it is generally accepted in Nigerian society that the man is the head of the family and that the woman should submit to the man.

“Most people believe that the man should be the head of the family, should take of the family, should protect his wife (which is normal); and then the woman should be the ones to take care of the home, cook, manage the home and everything. But if you take a look at what is going on in society right now with inflation going on and on, if the women maintain just managing the home without supporting their husbands, I think most men will die young.” She likens the woman to the neck of the body, supporting the head allowing it to turn, and teaches that both women and men should not trap themselves in traditional roles but should discuss and do that which supports a partnership of “love, respect, understanding, patience, tolerance, communication … and trust” in the relationship.

Finally, I asked her about the role of the dowry in marriage.

From her Igbo perspective, she explained that while some people see the dowry as “purchasing the bride,” the dowry is a traditional sign to the intended wife’s father that he can trust you with his daughter. The man’s word may be his bond in the US, but in this culture, you must bring more than your word that you are interested in the lady. The dowry does not always consist of money, but sometimes money can be substituted for the value of the items requested by the bride’s family. The women are not present for the negotiations which usually occur place between the male elders of the two families.

I also asked Uzo what she says to couples or persons who seek her advice when they desire to marry someone of a different tribe, culture, or religion. She responded by saying she would begin with helping such persons to understand what marriage is all about. Many women in her part of the country get married for money and affluence, while men look for a woman who is beautiful and who can take care of the home and cook. Instead, Uzo says they should ask whether they can trust this person to take care of their kids, to build a home with them. “Can this person be good example to our future kids?” She says this is paramount as one of the bases for marriage. If these are properly considered, persons can look past the pressures from the outside and must then work towards compromise through discussion, though it may still be difficult. Her job as counselor, then, is to give them tips and help guide their discussions.

I will end with these remarks from Uzochukwu Uzoeghelu: “That submission that God has commanded is wives to husbands. So, I am submitted to my own husband [as the Bible directs.] What the African society has made it look like is that every woman should submit to every man. And it has caused a lot of problems. [The home should be a place of partnership, even considering the roles of the man and the woman.] Men should lead by example in the home.

Then, if you are a good leader as a man in your home, the woman … will willingly submit to you … Once a man loves his wife, once the love is there, submission comes willingly. The woman will know, ‘This man is there for me.’”

According to Uzo, most Nigerian men do objectify women because of the bride price, but some men see women as persons of value, and it is her job as a marriage coach to help them see the woman as a person rather than an object, in spite of the bride price. Education, religion, and parental upbringing have all played a role in helping her to see herself as other than an object, but this is not how most women see themselves. Instead, they usually learn to be submissive by the way they are trained, by the way they see their own mothers being treated in the home due to culture and tradition, and “… by the way society tends to shut women up when they see that they are outspoken and can speak for themselves. I speak from experience as well.”

Women who hold positions of power in society have not made an impact in this area. They are often ignored by men and are even oppressed by other women. “Most men don’t even value most women ... [and] see women as a threat.”

Richard Hulon Donnell is the Senior Advisor to the President of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. His responsibilities include providing advice to the President on a full range of operational matters, including advocacy for the college on federal, state, and local governmental affairs. In this role, he assists the President in developing and driving strategies to influence and mobilize action in the U.S. Congress, State Capitol, and City Hall on the public policy priorities of Lane College.

He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from Lambuth College (now the University of Memphis-Lambuth) and obtained his law degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He practiced law in Jackson for 15 years.

Richard H. Donnell Councilman

Donnell is the host of Jackson’s #1-rated Sunday morning radio talk show … Community Feedback … that airs at 9:00 a.m. on WFKX-FM (96Kix). He is also the host of the Lane College radio talk show … Real Talk … that airs each Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. on WLCD-FM (98.7). As host, he uses his platforms to, among other things, inform his audience of vital issues and information that affect the local community, register voters for upcoming elections, dissuade young people from joining gangs, mediate disputes among gang members by urging them to resolve disputes through non-violent means, and assist 2nd graders in learning to read.

In August 2022, Donnell was recognized by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee for receiving the Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. He is one of five faculty/staff recipients across Tennessee’s higher education institutions to earn the service award.

Community service recognition programs for higher education students and faculty/staff at the campus level were created in Tennessee through legislation enacted by the General Assembly in 1991.

In January, Donnell was appointed to an unexpired term on the Jackson City Council and is currently running unopposed for a full term in the May election.

Donnell is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He is a lifetime member of Lane Tabernacle CME Church, 112 Conger Street, Jackson, Tennessee, where his current Pastor is Rev. Dr. H. Leon Williams Sr.; Rev. Dr. Claude A. Bass, Presiding Elder; and Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr., Presiding Prelate.

His parents are the late J.D. and Mattie Donnell, who were former officers at Lane Tabernacle. He spends his leisure time reading and traveling across the western United States.

His favorite motto is, “Live and let live.”

North East Mississippi Region Department of Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Annual Marian Scipio Vesper Hour Submitted by Linda Wilson

The members of the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Department of the Northeast Mississippi Region held their Annual Marian Scipio Vesper Hour on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Royal Chapel CME Church hosted by Rev. Daniel and Rev. Linda Cooperwood. The Royal Chapel Choir opened with Spiritual singing, and a Male Choir from each district sang with the Spirit. We highlighted Reflections of Boldness by giving a meaning to each letter of the word, and as always, financial gifts were given to our nine widows.

The service was well attended. Ministers’ spouses, widows, and many supporters [present at the event] wore the colors of gold and black, which was very beautiful. More men were present than women. A total of over $7,800 was raised, which will allow us to be able to meet our Connectional obligation.

We give thanks to the officers and members of the districts who have and continue to serve within the department. Holy Ground Written by John Gilmore Emily Dickinson, a nineteenth-century American poet said, “They say that God is everywhere, and yet we always think of God as somewhat of a recluse.

When my daughter was 5, she read me a story about a bear who was bored with his same old surroundings and wanted to go into outer space in search of new adventures. In the story, he found the highest point in his backyard, closed his eyes, and jumped. When he landed, he opened his eyes and began exploring the “new planet” he’d traveled to. He was no longer bored but having a ball in this new place. He noticed that many things looked familiar, but it wasn’t until he ran into his mother that he realized he hadn’t really gone anywhere new but had experienced those adventures in the same old place. And then he was able to see it all in a new light.

“Take your shoes off for the ground on which you stand is holy ground” God reminded Moses. The familiar place that Moses had passed for years was suddenly transformed by his awareness of the presence of God. Where is holy ground? If we take seriously the principle that there is no place where God is not, then wherever we are is holy ground! And that’s good news for it means that God does not have to be summoned nor God’s presence invoked. It means that we don’t have to do anything special, exotic, or complicated to experience God where we are. If we take just a moment to be still, we can recognize God’s presence.

Standing by the bedside of a sick loved one, we realize we’re on holy ground. We realize we're on holy ground in a car careening out of control. As bad news is being delivered to us, though our knees buckle, we continue to stand because we’re on holy ground. In those moments we find strength, protection, and comfort because there is no place where we can be where God is not.

But it’s not just in tragedies that we acknowledge God’s presence. Pausing to give thanks before we eat or while we wash the dishes after a meal can make the whole act of eating a blessed activity. Recognizing God’s presence in even the most routine aspects of our lives can be transforming. It can open our eyes to the fact that each moment is special. We’re reminded that we’re not alone and so that whatever we face, we do so with God. Where you are right now– is holy ground.

Joining the Great Cloud

Mrs. Ora Hazel Bullock Mrs. Ora Hazel Bullock, the oldest daughter of the late D.C. and Lucy Johnson Hazel, was born July 15, 1928. She was a graduate of Madison Street High School (1945), Albany State College (University) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education (1949), and earned a master's degree from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (1971).

Ora Bullock was a member of Hines Memorial CME Church in Albany, Georgia; Disabled Veterans Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars; Albany Alumni Chapter of Albany State University; SOWEGA Council on Aging (Meals on Wheels) for 25 years; Dougherty County Retired Educators; Jollye Jacks Civic and Social Club; Albany State National Alumni (Life); American Legion Auxiliary 512; and Georgia Retired Educators (Life). An educator with the Dougherty and Worth County School System, she retired after 30 years of faithful service.

her spouse, the late Ellis Grant Bullock; sister, Claudia; brothers, James and David; and son, Donald. She leaves to cherish her memories: her sisters, Nellie and Lucy; brother, Roger; sister-in-law, Hilda; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. Brenda Lee Hicks Mrs. Brenda Lee Hicks was born on May 29, 1963, to the late Mathis and Tora Bell Williams in Albany, Georgia. Brenda was the second youngest of the family.

On February 3, 2019, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Hines Memorial Christian Episcopal Church.

Brenda attended Albany High School in 1982.

In 1987, she met her soulmate, Mr. Albert Hicks, and the two were married on July 28, 2003. Brenda began working at the Dougherty County System in 1997 and eventually became an Assistant Nutrition Supervisor.

On Sunday, March 12, 2023, she transitioned at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. In addition to

Continued from previous page her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Minnie Cotton, Diane Williams, and Barbara Jean Williams; mother-in-law Mrs. Jobell Hicks; brother-inlaw Tommie Cotton; sisters-in-law Ida Hicks and Timeta Hicks; and son-in-law Marco Mason.

Brenda Hicks was the world’s greatest grandma.

She leaves behind two daughters, Lashonta WilliamsMason and Vanessa Morman of Albany GA; five stepchildren whom she loved dearly, Derrick Thomas, Antonio Thomas, Phillip Thomas, John Hicks and Elizabeth Hicks; and her grandchildren, Marquavious Mason, Shaniyah Mason, Jasmine Mason, Jakari Pittman, Jamya Pittman, and Jamarious Pittman; and great-grandson Kaiden Brown.

She also leaves brothers, Mathis Williams, Jr. and L.C. (Debra); sisters, Willie Mae Williams, Annie Mae (Freddie) Hill, Tara Willis and Kimberly Willis (Henry); sisters-in-law, Sarah Griffin and Marie Clay; brothers-in-law, Rayfield Hicks, Terry Hicks, and Freddie Hicks; her caretaker, Thomia Thomas; and a host of loving family and friends.

Valla Curry Valla Genorise Curry was born to the union of the late Rev. J.O. and Duree P. Lowe on February 17, 1941. She departed this life on April 3, 2023, in Bellevue, Nebraska. She received the gift of the Holy Spirit at an early age and was a lifelong member of Mt. Nebo CME Church.

She graduated from Lee-Prentiss High School and continued her education at Mississippi Industrial College, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She went on to teach for 17 years at Verona Elementary School.

In September 5, 1965, she joined in the bonds of holy matrimony with the late Mr. George Cleveland Curry, and unto this union, three daughters were born: Phelisa, Georgia, and April.

Throughout her life, she was a fierce advocate for the rights of those with special needs. She never backed down from a challenge. In spite of strong opposition, she succeeded in getting a special education program at her daughter's school. She had a way of seeing what was right and how things should be and was relentless in achieving it for the betterment of all.

She worked just as hard for Mt. Nebo and the community. She worked tirelessly coordinating funding for building renovation and program counselors for the neighborhood community center, where she started a summer program with activities and meals for the neighborhood's children. She also hosted many fundraisers for church programs.

Her door was always open to help anyone in the best way that she knew how. Even if it was just to say, "Come on around, sit down, and get you something to eat." She cherished her relationships with family and friends. When she was around, friends knew they were bound to laugh and have a good time. She touched so many lives and was an inspiration to many. The love she shared was so precious and will live on in our hearts with the sweet memories of her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Cleveland Curry; her parents, Rev. J.O. and Duree P. Lowe; grandmother, Eliza Lowe; two sisters, Jeanette Elliott and Hala Peterson; five brothers, James H. Lowe, Wesley F. Lowe, John D. Lowe, William O. Lowe, and Jerome Lowe; three brothers-in-law, Charles Elliott, Max Curry, and Kenneth Williams; one sister-inlaw, Verda M. Lowe; and one nephew, Romell.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her three daughters, Phelisa Curry, Georgia Curry, and April (Samara) Jones; one stepson, Carter Scales; two sisters: Sharon (Tommy) Davis and Cornelia Williams; one brother, Joseph Lowe; six sisters-in-law, Helen Lowe, Janie Lowe, Beatrice Burress Lowe, Cora Dyas, Jeannie Stubbs, and Patty Tucker; one brother-in-law, Larry (Barbara) Curry; seven grandchildren, Dwight Curry, Blake Stewart, Elijah Crump, Nile Stewart, Dureese Jones, Nakeivus Jones, and Semoia Shelton; three great-grandchildren, Andre Curry, Melanie Shelton, and Emmitt Payne; and many devoted friends, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
