General Conference Concerns (Response to a Letter to the Editor)

When I was a child, "Schoolhouse Rock" infomercials were shown between the cartoons every Saturday morning. The intent was not to try to sell something to the viewers, most of whom were children; rather the purpose was to inform. If you want, you can still view some of these on the internet. One of these was about how a bill becomes a law.

Recently, a reader asked me about general conference processes and outcomes related to resolutions and the CME Book of Discipline. I will include those questions here and attempt some answers which I hope will help to clarify any confusion.

1. I noticed, during the last General Conference, that there were resolutions adopted that Editor amended sections within the Discipline and there were resolutions that affected policies within the church. When do the amendments go into effect?

• Amendments go into effect immediately after the close of the General Conference unless otherwise required or stated. Sometimes a delay is included to allow for adjustment by those affected by the new policy or procedure. Amendments to the Constitution take effect no later than 10 days after notice by the College of Bishops that all annual conference ratification requirements have been met.

• The General Conference may also vote to delegate business, unfinished or otherwise, to a future entity, agent, or body. The nature of the business and any limitations on actions taken must be clearly specified.

2. When our City Council adopts, and the Mayor approves, sections of our code, those ordinances go into effect upon publication in "a newspaper of general circulation." So why wouldn't publication in the Christian Index serve the same purpose? Also, why would it take 4 years for an amendment to the Discipline to go into effect? It doesn't take 4 years for persons elected to office to begin serving. What happens to the policies? Is there a published book of policies? When or do they go into effect? If nothing is written down, how will the entire connection know that they exist?

• The book in which our policies are contained is the CME Book of Discipline. However, there are also training manuals and other books that are authorized or endorsed by this Book. Further, persons holding certain offices, especially the General Offices, are authorized explicitly and by virtue of their respective office to prepare material for use throughout the Church. The Discipline would be too bulky and unwieldy were it to contain all these materials. Further, The Christian Index, while the official organ of the CME Church, is not the Book of Discipline and is not intended or authorized to serve as a substitute for it in any way.

3. My last suggestion for an article or lesson on the General Conference is the definition of terminology used during the General Conference and the voting process used in the adoption of these items. Again, during the last General Conference, every item wasn't declared "adopted" by the Presiding Officer. Some items were reviewed by the various committees and recommendations were made, but then there were no votes taken. I don't know if the item was adopted, not adopted or just read for information purposes. What determines if an item is voted on and adopted?

What items don't require a vote but just a recommendation from a committee?

• The General Conference is conducted according to the current Robert's Rules of Order, or another agreedupon standard for conducting business meetings.

• Items that require a substantive change in the wording of the Discipline,; or that change the meaning, application, or effect of existing laws in the Discipline; or that call for new legislation to be included in the Discipline must be voted on in the General Conference, subject to part two of the answer to number one, above. Finally, any legislation may be challenged by any member of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and is thus subject to review by the Judicial Council.

As with "Schoolhouse Rock," there is more that can be said than can be included in this short space, but I hope this helps. Further information may be found in The Book of Discipline (2018) under sections relating to the General Conference.

The 2022 CME Annual Conference Schedules for Texas

By Senior Bishop Lawrence Reddick Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Eighth Episcopal District: Today is Saturday, April 23, 2022. On Thursday afternoon we concluded the 2022 Session of the Jamaica Annual Conference at the Good News CME Church in the Fortcharles community, in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica. We met for two days (Wednesday and Thursday), though we generally meet for three.

Over many weeks, we have been negotiating with dates and sites for the 2022 Annual Conferences in Texas. We’ve come to a point of announcing them now.

One thing we have learned during this pandemic is that many of our worship services don’t have to be as long as they have been to be effective. That lesson should not be lost as we plan the Annual Conferences. (Sometimes we have had long services because we have called as many people into its participation as we can to build the crowd, while yet knowing that having so many people participate makes the services last longer.) Perhaps we can begin to be as efficient with our time as possible.

Another CME Hidden Jewel The Christian Methodist Episcopal CDC As “hidden jewels” go, this one is rare! Over 28 years ago, the CME CDC was formed to restore the historic buildings at one of our CME colleges.

Although that project was unsuccessful and ultimately the property was sold, through the efforts of the General Board of Personnel Services, the CDC continued to exist with an expanded focus on education today.

The current goal of the CDC is to facilitate after-school and summer learning enrichment program models combined with the solicitation of grant funding from major organizations and donors, as well as the distribution of grants to other church-related non-profits and community organizations who sponsor similar educational programs.

The Board of Directors recently elected to leadership as its Interim Executive Director, Board member Lillian Curlett of St. Louis, MO. As a qualified educator/businessperson and successful fundraiser, Mrs. Curlett is truly optimistic about the future of today’s CDC. In Her Own Words: “Not unlike other ‘hidden jewels’, the CME Community Development Corporation was in plain sight, but hidden and not in the spotlight.

This 501(c)(3) organization gives us the opportunity to ‘upcycle’; that is, to take what we have and create something beautiful for our community. I am excited about the possibilities! It is an honor to lead the efforts of the CME CDC, as it pivots to serve our most vulnerable citizens – our children!

“Covid-19 caused the shutdown of all educational enrichment activities, opportunities for in-person mentoring and teaching or peer to peer interaction, and it pushed education in a new virtual direction. However, it is common knowledge that prior to Covid-19, children of color were already struggling with educational gaps. Now two years later, it is imperative that we close that gap with learning opportunities that empower and enrich the lives of children, particularly children of color, once again. Non-school hour programs have proven to be impactful in supporting and strengthening school day outcomes for children and their families.

“My vision for the work of the CME CDC is to make a difference in the lives of children by meeting the needs of parents for quality educational enrichment opportunities for their children. We want to implement program models that focus on academic enrichment, lifestyle, leadership experiences and mentoring. The CME CDC will play a major role in the design and implementation of quality school-age programs across the country where it has sponsorship. Our ‘hidden jewel’, the CME CDC, will yield priceless returns as we move forward to invest in our children.”

With Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr. as Chair, other members are Bishop Paul A.G. Stewart, Sr., Mrs. Estelle Brooks, Dr. Tyrone T. Davis, Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick, Bishop James B. Walker, Dr. Wayne Williams, Mrs. Linda Whitlock, and Mrs. Curlett. To fund its initiatives, the Board is raising money and seeking grants from organizations and individuals. This approach is rather new for the CME Church and yet its purpose, as another hidden jewel, is crucial as an investment in the lives of our children – our future. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business”

A Summary of the Aims or Goals of the Strategic Plan of the CME Church* The concerns this plan seeks to address have been with the church ever since there was a church with people called Christians. However, times change, and our approach to the challenges of the day must likewise change, or at least be evaluated for their effectiveness if we are to continue to be a church body. This Strategic Plan addresses these challenges and concerns in the following ways: 1.) Develop and pilot discipleship program for all our churches. The aim is to develop and promote Christian faith and behavior in both new and existing believers.

2.) Increase and evaluate our international impact through clearly defined focused missions and partnerships. The aim is to have missions that aremeasurable and meaningful to all involved.

3.) Develop church growth initiatives that will increase the apparent and real vibrancy of existing churches and that will result in the planting of new churches in new places.

The aim is to have a vibrant, inviting church life and evangelism.

4.) Reach and model biblical stewardship on an individual and a corporate level. The aim is a godly use of time, talents, and resources, including the acquisition or availability of new funding sources for the local church.

“Reaching, Teaching, and Ministering to All Generations, Equipping Them for Greater Works and Service for Him”

SHARING OUR FAITH WITH OTHERS As Christian Believers we should look for and welcome the opportunity to share the goodness of God. For many, however, this is much easier said than done.

Because we have different personalities and come from various backgrounds and experiences, the how, when, and where to share our faith takes on many faces. We must, therefore, be in touch with ourselves. Getting in touch in my opinion starts in the home and in our everyday activity. Even if everyone in one’s home is not saved or is a strong witness for Christ, they should know that you or I are! Rightful and consistent living says more than any words that can be spoken. Why? Because the way we are perceived and observed each, and every day is key to our success in sharing our faith.

I am sure that you have heard the phrase, before you sweep around someone else’s front door, be sure to sweep around your own. In communicating how we go about sharing our faith, what does this mean for us? Well, it simply means that before we can “go out” and attempt to be an effective, comfortable, and creditable witness for the Lord, we must be about sharing who we are, in our everyday environment. We must be careful that our thoughts and our words for witnessing are not on the opposite end of the scale from our everyday thoughts, behavior and expressions . . . Hence, when we communicate good fortune to friends, family, or co-workers, are we lucky or are we blessed? When expressing our happiness, are we simply glad or are we thankful? In having fun and enjoying good company are the jokes and funny stories we tell raw and dirty or are they, even though funny, clean and wholesome? Is our everyday listening music provocative and suggestive or does it help to prepare us in our everyday walk, in “Sharing Our Faith With Others?” When we are confronted with adversity, do we express our discomfort through angry words and gestures, or do we show a measure of restraint?

So, let each of us remember that who we are and what we believe, should be the same!

Ministers' Spouses, Widows/Widowers

The Fifth Episcopal District

Ministers’ Spouse Widows/Widowers Department Salutes Service We are so very proud of the service this ministry brings to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Since the inception of the Department, we have been in unity and our purpose is to assist the families of the ministry.

Our major programs The widows mite supports widows and widowers of the ministry. This effort is supported by the Marion Scipio Vesper Hour services across the connection.

Although Marion Wesson Scipio departed this earthly life in December of 1985, she will never die because her name will continue to be called each year by the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers throughout the Connection. In September of 1996, The Marion Scipio Vesper Hour was formally adopted by the Connectional Spouses and Widows as a means of supporting the Widows’ Mite.

Marion Scipio was elected Secretary of the Ministers Wives in 1983 while the Wives were still on the Missionary wheel. She was the daughter of Ervin and Pearl Wesson, the wife of Rev. Isaiah Scipio and mother of Brenda and Deborah. (Brenda still lives in the Detroit area).

Sis. Scipio knew and understood the role a wife played in the life of a C.M.E. minister—especially an itinerant minister. She traveled with her husband to Los Angeles, Ca., Oakland, Ca., Detroit and Africa. She knew how important it was to be supportive of the minister. Although Sis. Scipio was not widowed, she felt compassion for the widows and was very supportive of the Widow’s mite.

Barbara H. Somerville Scholarship Awards are given each year to children of ministry families.

This award us named in honor of Mrs. Somerville, a servant of the church and community. She was a trailblazer for the Department and championed education. Annually, the Episcopal Districts gift $1000 to a graduating senior in their districts. We are currently accepting applications for the 2022 awards.

Our Students, Our Schools

is our current initiative through giving and support of the community. We have focused on the institutions of higher learning of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. For the past four years the Department has joined with local spouses of Lane College, Texas College, Paine College, and Miles College in direct gifts and support of our students.

And

We serve in the various ministries of the church. We are ushers, missionaries, choir members, kitchen workers, preachers, teachers, and prayers. I personally thank Mrs. Regina Dillard, Mrs. Jazzmine Smith, Mrs. Mae Sims, Mrs. Angela Scott, Mrs. Valestine May, Mrs. Sylvia Smith, Mrs Valerie Echoles, Mrs. Regina Hall, Minister Doug Lyles, Mrs. Shimona Jackson, Mrs. Alicia Rollerson, Mr. Willie Williams, First Gentleman, Dr. Lawrence Jefferson-Snorton and all the members of the Fifth Episcopal District, lead by Bishop Teresa JeffersonSnorton, a minister’s Spouse! Arizona / New-Mexico – “Laity” Winter Clothing Outreach Submitted by Linda L. Langston, Region Lay Leader Rev. Dr. William Dorn, Jr., Presiding Elder

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12) The Laity of the Arizona / New-Mexico Region conducted a Winter Clothing Outreach in the cities where the C.M.E. churches are located. The Laity [conducted] the Outreach from September 2021 through February 2022.

The Laity from each church collected and donated winter clothing to homeless shelters, organizations, and the unfortunate in their respective cities during the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the Laity delivered the winter clothing and distributed to the unfortunate on the streets and in the city parks.

Winter clothing was donated to women, men, boys, and girls in these facilities. Clothes donated were: socks, tennis shoes, boots, gloves, sweaters, jackets, jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts/pants, knitted scarves and caps, etc., Also donated were boxes of miscellaneous items: blankets, hand sanitizers, hand soaps, and toothbrushes.

A Black History Month Perspective Submitted by Jacqueline A. Ewings Harris Memorial CME Church

I would like to take a few minutes to share with you a moment in Black History.

In 1916, Carter G. Woodson saw a need to recognize and highlight the accomplishments and contributions of African American people, which lead him to publish The Journal of Negro History. Carter is known as the “Father of Black History Month” because he created Negro History Week in 1926. This was just the beginning. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially extended Woodson’s Black History Week to Black History Month. This year we are celebrating the 46th year of Black History Month.

The world today is ever changing with systemic racism, police brutality, and other racial injustices. We as a people must put forth an effort to “keep black history alive” as it is written.

We are currently at a point in America, where pundits are goading education systems to whitewash history and forgo factual black history about slavery, Civil Rights, Social Injustice, Voters Rights and the latest Critical Race Theory. The purpose of this shift is to ensure divisive topics like slavery and civil rights placates Caucasian children to avoid feeling guilty or discomfort in classrooms during lessons. But, what about our black children and their feelings; many of our ancestors were in some way formidable in what is our “black history.”

As parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, we must educate, share, and emphasize to our children and especially our young adults the truth of “black history.” We are a people that comes from Kings and Queens…knowing with God nothing is impossible for us.

We are great, innovative, intelligent and gifted people. Just imagine the world without Black people.

There would be NO: hair products (Madame C. J. Walker), hair brush (Lydia O Newman), traffic signal and gas mask (Garrett Morgan), letter drop mailbox (Philip Downing), filament for the light bulb (Lewis H. Latimer), Super Soaker toy (Lonnie Johnson), cell phone (Henry T. Samson), and the list goes on with many other notable “black inventor” firsts.

So, in honor and celebration of Black History Month, I challenge you to make every day a Black History Day”. . . a day to embrace our rich African American heritage. In an effort to keep our black history alive, we all have a duty. Systemic Racism is real, the attempt to whitewash history in schools is real, and voter suppression is real. Each day in 2022, let’s find a way to support black businesses and/or black history to honor our black heritage.

For those interested in taking one additional step in the community, write to your local lawmakers when issues arise that should be addressed. Let’s not turn a blind eye to blatant wrongdoings – let your voice be heard and let lawmakers know WE have the power to keep or remove them from office. This is why WE, as a black community, must stay united and VOTE! If you or someone you know is not registered to vote, visit https:// vote.gov/ and REGISTER TODAY! In the words of Martin Luther King, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Always remember, we as a collective people have POWER – the power to speak and the power to make changes. Make an impact today and speak up for our exceptional AfricanAmerican history and heritage.

Committed to God and the Church Robert Louis Stewart Jr. is the son of the late Mrs. Mabel Stewart and the late Me. Robert Louis Stewart Sr. He is a 1984 graduate of Minden High School. He received his B.A. in Political Science in 1988, along with his M.A.T. in social Science Education in 1993, both from Grambling State University. He attended Louisiana Technical University and Northeast Louisiana University, University of Arkansas-Monticello for additional graduate studies along with receiving a Certificate of theology from the Interdenominational theological Center in Atlanta, GA. He has taught junior high and high school Social Studies for 25 years.

Brother Robert Louis Stewart Jr. is a faithful servant in the Louisiana Region of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and has served in several leadership positions beginning in 1984 to this present day.

Robert Stewart presently serves as the Local Lay Ministry Leader at Mount Zion Christian Methodist Episcopal Temple Church located in Minden, Louisiana. He also serves as the Minden District Ly Ministry Leader, and the 4th Episcopal District Vice President of Lay Ministry (Louisiana & Mississippi). Creating Space and Making Room: Our Reasonable Service Written by Vanessa Anderson

“The doors of the church are now open” is a familiar saying during a sacred time in the worship experience: the invitation to accept Christ. This specific part is for all, whether one is familiar or unfamiliar with church or starting or recommitting their relationship with Christ. All are welcome and accepted. Heaven rejoices for yet another soul’s salvation-winning experience. The fulfilling and ongoing process of sowing, watering, and planting spiritual seeds into various lives to enhance the Kingdom of God is an unforgettable part of one’s journey.

From the perspective of longevity, how often are we compelled to welcome, invite, and accept others to grow and learn from us for church growth, succession planning, and leadership development? We should have a similar mindset toward future progress. Do we extend our tables with our eyes on the future or continually feast with the few we know best?

COVID-19 showed us the importance of being intentional and intergenerational. The church, as we knew it before, sparkled at the thought of having the same faithful few lead the efforts, remain stagnant to new voices, and ignore opposing methods. The fight or flight mentality produced challenges where changemakers had to stand firm if they believed in the power of progress at all levels of church and leadership. As the body of Christ, it should be our goal to strive for excellence in training younger generations, having strategic plans, and implementing task force objectives that will keep us in the mindset of forward movement. The purpose of intergenerational growth, leadership, and development are not for creating props or puppeteering. It to help spread knowledge and growth potential in safe nurturing spaces that will develop leaders to advance the mission to bring others to Christ. This is important if the church is serious about creating quality successions to help enhance the future state of the church at all levels.

At my current church, St. James AME Church in San Jose, California, my late grandparents, the Rev. Ulysses Allen, Sr. and Sister Irma Allen, were a vital part of the progress and development of St. James’s ministry and growth. This is the same church where my mother, Exhorter Janet Anderson, developed her skills and began efforts to enhance the ministry to thrive in the spirit of excellence. Upon joining in my young adult years, it was laid on my heart to not just be a pew sitter but to be intentional in my service to God and the church. Through development and opportunity, I joined the beginning stages of the Richard Allen Young Adult Council in the 5th District and I was later appointed a steward at my church. Soon after, I was given the opportunity to serve on various levels of the church such as becoming the Director of Digital Communications for the California Conference. These opportunities came because of leaders in the church who felt it not robbery to be intentional about welcoming more intergenerational voices and ideas to various platforms to help build the future development in our Zion.

In summary, as we invite others to Christ and encourage them along their spiritual journey, let us remember to make room at our tables and extend our efforts to be intentional about our future and progress for church growth, church succession planning, and church leadership. Everyone does not have the same calling in life but everyone has a role to play in the continuation of keeping our Zion growing and developing for current and future generations.

Vanessa Anderson, M.A. is a Millennial who serves the Lord with gladness as a steward and as the president of the California Conference RAYAC in the 5th District. She is also the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Carey G. Anderson, the senior pastor of FAME in Seattle, and the youngest granddaughter of the late Anne White, a life-member of both the Lay Organization and Women’s Missionary Society.

Joining the Great Cloud

Rev. James Napoleon Greene, Jr. Rev. James Napoleon Greene, Jr. was born on October 23, 1941, to James N. Greene, Sr. and Princetta H. Greene. He was one of three children born to this union, his siblings being Frances G. Williams and Mary Greene. He was educated in the segregated Thomasville city public school system and went on to graduate from Paine College. He continued seminary training at both the Interdenominational Theological Center and Pensacola Christian College.

Rev. Greene dedicated his life to service. He taught in multiple Georgia public-school systems for more than 40 years, teaching various curricula in the science disciplines and, at times, serving as a multi-sport coach.

He was active throughout the community, volunteering with the Boys & Girls' Club, Retired Teachers Association, and Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

He lived aspiring to touch all those he met, earnestly seeking to share the love of Christ.

His heart-song was serving as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He accepted his call to ministry in 1979, a vocation that he continued until the end. The congregation of his pastorate at Pleasant Hill CME Church was crestfallen but takes comfort in the ministry that he left behind. He was a second generation pastor in the CME Church. He pastored all across South Georgia and built or expanded three churches. As part of his ministry, he served a time as Presiding Elder of the MoultrieMcRae District.

Pastor Greene transitioned to his eternal home in the early hours of October 31, 2021. He was laid to rest on November 6, 2021, in the Ochlocknee Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Beachton, Georgia. Bishop Thomas L. Brown provided the stirring eulogy.

Rev. James Greene, Jr., was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mrs. Geraldine Greene. He leaves behind two children, Patricia Scott and Rev. James Greene III; son-in-law Artis Scott, Jr.; grandchildren, Artis III and Christina Scott; and great-grandson Azai Scott.

He is the uncle to five outstanding sons and one talented daughter of his sister, Frances G. Williams, who preceded him to glory. Additionally, through marriage, he is the uncle to more than 25 nieces and nephews, each special and endearing in their own unique way. He was a proud member of the mighty Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. 44

C.K. Henry, Sr. Reverend Dr. Charles Keller Henry, Sr., age 93, transitioned from his earthly home and entered eternal rest on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at the Richwood Nursing & Rehab Center of LaGrange, Kentucky.

Charles, affectionately known as “CK,” was born June 19, 1928, in Cynthiana, Kentucky to the late John Thomas Henry, Sr. and Martha (Fisher) Henry. He began his primary education in the Cynthiana School System and graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Ohio, where he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball.

At a very young age, Charles professed his love and faithfulness to Christ. He and his siblings began their spiritual learning in the Baptist and African Methodist Episcopal Church environments. As the youngest, his formative years were positively impacted and protected by his parents and siblings.

Numerous people influenced CK’s life, including two teachers that had a profound effect on his educational and spiritual walk: Mrs. Henrietta Mae Fields of Tennessee and Professor W. E Newsome of Ohio, who was also his Sunday School teacher.

After graduating high school, Dr. Henry enlisted in the United States Army. He served during World War II in Guam and state side after his parents' death. Upon discharge, he enrolled in Whittenburg University Hamma Divinity School earning his B.A. in Education and Masters of Divinity degree in two years and eight months. He accepted his call under Rev. J.C. Glen. His first church was in Ford City, Pennsylvania.

He was later transferred to the Kentucky Conference and was assigned to St. James CME Church in Paducah, KY. He served at that church for 18 years.

Charles received the Special Education Certification (SECP) from University of Louisville.

After graduating, he became a substitute teacher for Tilghman High School in Paducah, KY for 6 years.

While teaching, he attended Murray State University, obtaining a Masters Degree in Education plus 30 hours towards his Doctorate in Education. In addition, he obtained his Doctor of Divinity from East Tennessee University along with receiving the KEPS Secondary Principal Certification during this time. He became

Vice Principal and Dean of Students at Tilghman High School and then became Principal, totaling 27 years spent in leadership responsibility while pastoring at St. James and other CME Churches throughout the Kentucky Conference. He continued his education, attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY receiving a Superintendent Certification, and a Homiletics and a Field Education Supervisor Certification from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

CK was always passionate about sharing the word of Jesus Christ with fellow preachers of the gospel. His ambition was “to always help those in ministry to be more effective leaders and to build on the characteristics God has given them.”

Dr. Henry’s ministry included pastorates in Western Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio under the CME Church umbrella. These included Ford City-Pennsylvania; St. James-Paducah; Cleaves Memorial-Evansville; Lane MetropolitanCleveland; St. John-Akron; Phillips Temple-Toledo; Lane Tabernacle-Hopkinsville; Bells Chapel-Fulton; Bowman Chapel-Morganfield; Wesley ChapelMadisonville; Pleasant Green-Hopkinsville and Spillman Chapel-Allensville. He served as the Presiding Elder in the Second Episcopal District Kentucky Region’s Evansville-Hopkinsville District and the Louisville-Lexington District, retiring in 2002 as the Second District’s first Presiding Elder with Emeritus status. He continued pastoring for 12 more years, although “sight challenged” for the last two years after retiring.

Henry was the Kentucky Region Joint Board of Finance Chairperson and the Ohio-Central Indiana Joint Board’s Treasurer; he wrote Sunday School Lessons for the CME Church Christian Index; was the Chair of the Kentucky Ministerial Examination Committee; was elected as a delegate to the CME Church General Conference numerous times; was a General Board member, was Commission on Ministry Chair, and was the first President-Elect of the CME Retired Ministers. He also wrote Pastoral Sermon Outlines for the AME Church Abingdon Press and served as Resident Pastor for the Rural Pastors Institute at Creighton University Center For New Community.

To name a few awards and honors, Dr. Henry was a Commissioned Kentucky Colonel; and received Paducah’s Mayoral Meritorious Duke Award and First Presbyterian Church of Akron’s Dove Award.

He served as President of Kentucky Council of Churches, Member of Ohio Council of Churches, New Community Center Board of Directors, Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA), ECU Camp, Commission on Ministry Chair, Lifetime Member of NAACP, and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

CK touched the lives of many through his teaching, preaching, singing, and unique sayings such as “ya-ya’s” and “put some oomph in it.” People loved to hear Henry sing just as much as he enjoyed doing it and giving all praises to God. He was always requested to sing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow,” which brought shouting and tears of joy to everyone. He would always say, “If the Lord is watching a sparrow which is a very small, flying species, I know He’s watching over me ‘cause I’m made in His image. We must follow Jesus so close that when He breathes, we can feel His breath on us.”

CK was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a kind, generous, intelligent, faithful Man of God who inspired and encouraged everyone. He was serious about his walk with God and followed his foundational scripture Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:” Dr. Charles K. Henry, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents; daughters Sharon Henry and Renee Clayton; sisters Zella Mae Hawkins and Georgia Henry; brothers Frank B., Calvin R., William F., Eugene, Robert Logan, Cleon, and John R.; and granddaughter Cynthia Johnson.

Charles leaves to cherish fond memories: his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Wanda Paulette Henry; daughters: Christine Hagan, CheRhonda (Marreo) Greenlee; sons: Charles, Jr. “Chuck,” and Darrell Clayton; and grandchildren: Harvey McGee, Joan McGee, Christina Jackson, Brett Ringo, Jr., CheMarra Greenlee, and Million Greenlee; 24 greatgrandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; brothersin-law: Larry Young and Keith (Allison) Young; sisters-in law: Lonza Young, Rev. Pamela (Rev. Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Programs are administered by the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary.

Through its religion grantmaking, Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to deepen and enrich the lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

To this end, National and Indiana Clergy Renewal Programs provide an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God’s life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry.

Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program.
