Good Religion Exemplified In mid-February of this year, we learned there was a week-long blockade of a major bridge between the United States and Canada. This blockade was formed by persons protesting a legal requirement to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and occurred on a bridge that we have been told carries 25% of the trade between the two countries. These persons chose to be a stumbling block in the channel of commerce and grace between the two nations because they feel they have been wronged by government they now see as their enemy. Are you a channel of grace and an example of good religion even to your enemies?

The Old Testament Joseph found in Genesis 45 was a recipient of God’s grace, and he also was a vessel or conduit of God’s grace. A vessel is a carrier in which something is held, but a conduit is a channel through which something flows. A vessel claims temporary ownership, but a channel never claims to own anything. A vessel can be locked down, but a channel must be closed down or shut down. Joseph expressed the grace of God through him to his brothers, the very same ones who had thought to take his life and then sold him into slavery. And at the end he cried tears of joy and kissed them with tender affection to let them know that he really did love them and that all was forgiven.

This is what God has done for us in Christ Jesus.

We have sinned against him and deserve to be punished, even to die. But instead of this, God has offered to us the grace of forgiveness and the gift of everlasting life at his own expense. God has come to us in Jesus, with joy and loving tenderness offering us reconciliation with himself in love. Again I ask, are you a vessel or a channel of God’s grace? How does it show up when you face the people who have wronged you? Can you release and unload your goods, or do you harbor them? Are you an efficient transporter in the economy of God, or are you a roadblock in the supply chain?

When people do you wrong, the natural, human tendency is to get even or to pay them back for what they have done. The writer of Psalm 37 is led by the Lord to offer an alternative way. Instead of getting all upset, really upsetting yourself, this writer says fret not thyself, trust and delight yourself in the Lord, commit your way unto the Lord, and cease from anger. This is not to say forget about it; rather, it is to say let the memory of it spur you to remember God’s grace and promises to you concerning yourself and concerning your enemies. To do otherwise

is to make yourself into an evildoer; you become as those you say you are not like. In a nutshell, those who are evil seek their own advantage at your expense because they do not trust in God, while you, on the other hand, trust in God Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., to fight your battles, to grant Editor you blessings, and to further your cause. You expect God to do this BECAUSE you trust in God, and God has promised to do this faithfully for everyone who trusts in him.

You don’t have to fight fire with fire. However, Jesus goes further in Luke chapter 6 to say not only are you not to respond to those who are evil to you the way they treat you, but you are to go further to love them and to turn your love into good deeds toward them. God, your heavenly Father knows and sees all things and will reward accordingly. But just as he has shown you mercy and love and you have not deserved it, so should you show the same to those who do not deserve YOUR mercy and love.

Is Christ calling for you to be a doormat to be walked on and taken advantage of by others? Is he calling for the abandonment of human dignity and simple pride?

No, by contrast he is saying not to lose your life over things that will not last, and not to lose your soul by stooping to revenge and hate. Rise up to the level of divine love by the power of Christ who loves you, who himself was maltreated that he might gain you, and who lives in you if you have faith to believe. Good religion is not only lived on the inside in a bubble; good religion is lived in truth, in the highways and streets of life for all to see.

Just because you come into this world in sin does not mean you have to leave this world in sin. You can change and be changed if you receive the spirit of Christ by faith in Christ. But is that enough to endure the hardships and oppressions and even the evil, oppressive, self-minded people of this present day? You have to decide that for yourself. The evidence for it is in the word and in the faithfulness of God to those who believe, the greatest evidence being the faithfulness of the Father to the Son who was crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, and whom the Father raised up on the third day. Will you believe the evidence? Don’t just sing about good religion. Have good religion and let it show up in your faith and in your living.

JUDICIAL COUNCIL OPINION Justices Lampkin and Snell delivered the Opinion for the Council.

JURISDICTION This matter comes before the Judicial Council by way of a Petition for Declaratory Judgment submitted by Rev. Jon M. Isom, a pastor in full connection, and in good standing in the C.M.E. Church.

This Petition is submitted in accordance with ⁋ 805.2 §§ 1 and 2 which states: §1. Members of the CME Church with a justiciable interest in the meaning and application of a specific paragraph (s) or section of the Discipline may petition the Judicial Council for a declaratory decision. §2. Petitions shall specify the paragraph, article and/or section of the Discipline for which the decision is sought, be dated, signed by the petitioner(s), and forwarded to the President and Clerk of the Council.

Petitioner requests an interpretation of ⁋ 206.2 of the Book of Discipline of the C.M.E. Church, 2018, at page 33. He asks for clarity as to content of resolutions that are permitted to be submitted for inclusion in the Book of Resolutions for the General Conference consideration.

ISSUES PRESENTED FOR REVIEW Petitioner asks that Chapter 5, entitled The General Conference, ⁋ 206.2, page 33, of The Book of Discipline of the C.M.E. Church, 2018, that relates to “resolutions” be interpreted.

Petitioner specifically asks two questions: 1. “Must all resolutions seek legislation? and 2.

“May a resolution seek action by the General Conference, which is separate and distinct from legislation?”

To fully answer those questions, we set out the entirety of ⁋⁋ 206.1 and 206.2. ¶ 206.1. All resolutions, memorials, and other materials contemplated for presentation to the General Conference shall be sent to the appropriate Episcopal District Resolutions Committee member on or before January 31 of the year of the General Conference. ¶ 206.2.

representative shall be examined by him or her to ascertain if they meet the requirements for proposed legislation (cf. ¶ 1500.7 §4). All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of provisions in The Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page, and language to be changed and the language to be substituted. In addition to the requirements referenced, resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs. If the resolutions do not meet the requirements, they shall be returned for corrections.

RULING On January 26, 2022, the Judicial Council met via Zoom to discuss the Request for Declaratory Judgment.

We considered the Petition and have looked to general rules of statutory construction to arrive at our decision. The General Conference has full authority to enact rules for the denomination.

We interpret the plain language used by the General Conference in interpreting ⁋⁋ 206.1 and 206.2.

Paragraph 206.1 requires every submission, whether a resolution, memorial, and/or other material that is contemplated by the submitter for presentation to the General Conference to be sent to the appropriate Episcopal District Resolution Committee Member on or before January 31 of the year of the General Conference.

We further declare that once all resolutions, memorials, and/or other materials are submitted to the appropriate District Resolution Committee, ⁋ 206.2 requires the Episcopal District representative to examine the “resolutions” to ascertain whether they meet the requirements of ⁋ 1500.7 § 4, entitled “Matters for Consideration,” at page 317 of The Book of Discipline, which states “[a]ll resolutions requiring change in the wording and/or legal meaning of provisions of the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language of the Discipline to be changed and the language to be submitted.” (Emphasis added). This quoted language taken from ⁋ 1500.7 § 4 was incorporated verbatim into ⁋ 206.2 as is indicated above.

Paragraph 206.2 further states the following: “In addition to the requirements referenced, resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs. If the resolutions do not meet the requirements, they shall be returned for corrections.

Looking at the plain language of ⁋⁋ 206.1 and 206.2, which incorporates ⁋ 1500.7 § 4, the ruling of the Judicial Council is as follows: (1) All resolutions do not have to seek legislation; and (2) Resolutions may seek action by the General Conference, which is separate and distinct from legislation.

Our Opinion is supported by ⁋ 206.1 that calls for inclusion of resolutions, memorials, and other materials into the Book of Resolutions and ⁋ 1500.7 (1) through (4), which speak of “those matters” and “other matters” that have been included in the Book of Resolutions. Additionally, ⁋ 1500.7 (5) speaks of resolutions and proposals received by the General Conference from the Book of Resolutions.

Furthermore, the language of ⁋ 206.2 of The Discipline contemplates that resolutions may request actions other than those legislative in nature. For example, ⁋ 206.2 specifically provides in pertinent part: “All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of provisions in the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language to be changed and the language to be substituted.”

This language is directed and made applicable specifically to resolutions seeking a change in legislation.

Paragraph 206.2 does not contain any language which limits resolutions to actions seeking a change in legislation and does not otherwise prohibit as the subject matter of resolutions, actions which do not seek to change or introduce legislation. A reasonable interpretation of the plain language of ⁋ 206.2 is that it anticipates actions of a non-legislative nature.

Finally, ⁋ 1500.16 (Legislative Intent) of The Discipline, on four separate times, acknowledges the distinction between legislative actions and non-legislative actions passed in accordance with The Discipline. The first sentence of ⁋ 1500.16 provides: “It is the intent of the General Conference that all legislation and/or actions passed in accordance with these rules shall supersede and replace any legislation and actions, or parts of legislation and actions, passed by previous General Conferences.”

Here the General Conference clearly makes known the distinction between legislative actions and other actions.

In further recognition of the distinction between legislative actions and other actions, the last sentence of ⁋ 1500.16 provides: “Any actions which conflict with legislation enacted by this General Conference shall be null and void.” Although the purpose of this language is to make known the superiority of legislation- enacted by the General Conference, it also further makes known that legislative actions and other actions (non-legislative) are separate and distinct.

An interpretation of all the above referenced paragraphs leaves no doubt that resolutions do not have to seek legislation and resolutions may seek action by the General Conference, which is separate and distinct from legislation.

“From Where I Sit …”

“Church Rentals and Pitfalls” A national insurance company specializing in religious properties sent a recent notice indicating the potential liabilities churches may encounter by either renting unused spaces for long or short-term periods. Similar potentials may also arise even from the loaning of Church space.

To ensure the greatest protection for your congregation, especially with rentals, you should secure a “written” agreement signed by both parties that include at least four primary provisions: 1) the renter should secure liability insurance for at least $1 million with medical payments of up to $5,000; 2) your church should be named as an “additional insured” on the renter’s liability policy and the renter’s policy should be listed as the primary policy and your church’s liability policy as secondary; 3) secure a certificate of insurance before the event or rental period begins which will serve as evidence of the liability coverage and your church listed as an additional insured; and finally, 4) there should be a holdharmless, indemnity, and defense clause that protects or favors your church regarding any liability claims arising from the renter’s use of your church property.

This may seem like a lot to go through for a brief rental or for the use of your facilities, however, should the unexpected occur you will be happy that you took the time to ensure that these steps were taken.

You should consult an attorney to prepare the rental agreement and the hold-harmless clause. It can then serve as a model for future occasions. You should also consult your insurance agent for suggested limits of liability coverage and medical payments to request of your potential renter. Your agent can also advise how to obtain from your renter the certificate of insurance that verifies the liability coverage and that lists your church as an additional insured on the renter’s policy.

Whether renting or lending your sanctuary, fellowship hall, or any other area of your church facility or properties, you should, as noted in Luke 14:28, “count the cost” as you decide how much liability you wish to share with others. As always, you may contact our office with any questions, and we will be happy to steer you in the best direction. In my opinion, one should not let the potential of a mutually beneficial arrangement prove to be a costly experience in the long run. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” A Call to Move Forward When the quadrennial theme “Getting Back to Basics as We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” was shared by Bishop Bobby Best and the College of Bishops at the 38th Quadrennial Session and 39th General Conference in Birmingham, AL, the Church was hesitant and optimistic. The hesitancy might have been the Getting Back, and optimism about Our Way Forward, but here we are just months away from the 39th Quadrennial Session and the 40th Convening of the General Conference of the CME Church. Have we fully grasped the spirit of the quadrennial address? The theme suggested that we stop doing business as usual for the good of the Church and become change agents for Christ. The Quadrennial address focused on areas of alignment, intentionally on church growth, church planting, and church revitalization. These areas are essential for Church growth.

Growing God’s Way Does the church have a natural process of growth? I suggest considering Jesus and the examples of growth found in scripture. For example, the growth of fig-trees, growth of the lilies of the field, growing fruit, and trees, workers in the vineyard, and the mustard seed of faith. All living things are created to grow. The necessities and principles of growth can work for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church because principles are transferable, and principles of growth can work within our denomination.

The common thread in each of these examples is soil, which was critically important in Jesus’ day. But what is our soil? Could it be education, training, implementing faith, and trusting God at God’s Word?

What must we contend with in this season as we seek church growth, engage in church planting, and seek to experience church revitalization? One of the greatest principles for growth is change and we must welcome God’s desired change.

A New Language It will be important to speak the language of inclusiveness which will be transformative with many functions and moving parts. However, change must be managed; we must educate pastors and laity.

Although people see change as a negative infringement on their normal way of doing things or how things ought to be done, change is great if it can be managed, and the vision of change can be precise and welcomed by all within the denomination. Organizations spend hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars, creating new logos, buildings, and marketing campaigns to create effective change. What is the CME Church willing to invest?

Changing the Landscape Covid19 and its variants have completely changed the landscape of the local Church, and our approach must be different. Allow me to share this example. In a local neighborhood, there was a Wendy’s restaurant. The building was one of the first designs in the eighties. After 30 years, the company decided it was time for a change. So, for about a month the restaurant was closed. Once the restaurant reopened, it was refurbished. It was amazing – new paint, windows, signage, curb appeal, dining area, and parking lot! However, the change was not accepted by the community because the employees operated with the same culture, attitudes the same, slow service and at times bad service, and bad attitudes. The culture of the employees remained, which made the experience worse. Let us not be like this local Wendy’s. Instead, let the CME Church embrace both the need and the process for effectively addressing the changing landscape.

We are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

“Reaching, Teaching, and Ministering to All Generations, Equipping Them for Greater Works and Service for Him”

LAITY EMPOWERED BY THE GREAT COMMISSION, IMPACTING THE WORLD I continue, in this March 2022 Helping Hands Bulletin, to keep before us the spirit and intent of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). So, in this writing, allow me to focus specifically on what should be the results of laity acting on and carrying out The Great Commission.

For impactful results to be realized, there must be strong laity within the church and in the community who have sought and gained an understanding of their roles, duties, and responsibilities as members of the “Body of Christ.” This includes Lay Leaders, Lay Council Members, Stewards, Stewardesses, Ushers, Lay Ministry Council members, Trustees, Boards of Christian Education and Formation, CYFs, MTM Councils, Young Adults, and Choirs. Each of these persons must maintain, and claim, their rightful place in being a purposeful and consistent witness for Christ!

This understanding should lead to individual and collective acceptance and responsibility in making The Great Commission “come alive” in the community and in the world as a whole. So, let us remind ourselves – with love and peace in our hearts – we are to be witnesses to the ends of the earth, which does not always mean in a foreign land. Put simply, it is our responsibility as laity to carry the word of God with us wherever we go and to try to make Christ’s message “come alive” so that we can help bring reconciliation and peace into our world. Mother Teresa, during her lifetime, said, “Give your hands to serve and your hearts to love,” and 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” Hence, as we carry out our witnessing efforts, let us look for balance – balance that helps us to develop methods and approaches that also encourage and minister to those who have made a commitment to God and His church, as well as those in our communities who need our help and encouragement in accepting Christ. When we act under the authority of Christ and in his abiding presence through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered and, thus, receive power to be effective witnesses.

So as the Spirit works to increase [the presence] of the Word through lay men and women, our testimony to “all nations, people, and places,” must be that Jesus has risen, that his work on earth continues through his disciples (us), and that the authority and power for our work and witness is through the Holy Spirit and the word of God. If we follow Jesus and bear witness to his way, all of this will happen for each one of us and for our world, too . . . Laity Empowered

Often when people are experiencing problems, or if they need advice, they turn to a friend for help. But human effort always falls short.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation, don't underestimate the power and love of God. Complete healing flows from an absolute and unconditional trust in. and surrender to, the living Christ. It doesn't matter what your problem is, the only lasting solution is to be found in the unfathomable love which God, through Jesus, bestowed on humanity.

Never be too or too afraid to turn to Jesus. Lay all your problems at your problems at His feet. He gave His life for you and will grant you the healing balm of His peace.

I want to hold 0n to You. Lord, when the storm winds blow and I feel insecure. Grant me Your peace. Amen Walking With God / The Center of Christ's Peace " Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. " John 14:27 Few people can honestly say that they do not long for peace of mind and inner tranquility. The troubles and pressures of life can drive many to seek comfort in different things: be it tranquilizers, drugs, professional help or even alcohol. Others simply give in to despair and just go through the motions of life.

The only proven way to handle the problems and tensions of life is by having a faith that is steadfastly grounded in the living Christ. Hold on to Him in all circumstances, talk to Him and, regardless of how desperate your situation might be, trust that He is always with you. His peace will then fill your heart, helping you overcome all your fears.

Prince of Peace, please help me to turn to You first in everything that happens to me today. Amen Peace In God / Peace in the Storm " You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You. " Isaiah 26:3 If you allow your thoughts to dwell on the things that are happening in the world today, you run the risk of being caught up in a whirlpool of hatred, bitterness and fear.

Yet, when your faith threatens to falter, God gives you the power to believe that all things will work out for the good of those who love Him. Peace is the direct result of trust. When your faith in God is sure, you receive an inner calm that brings balance to your life. Put God first in all things and you will know His peace and joy, even in the most trying circumstances.

Almighty God, thank You that with You at the center of my life I fear God ... no storms, not even problems as threatening as hurricanes. Amen Walking With God / The Blessing of a Peacemaker " Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. " Matthew 5:9

Peacemakers create healthy relationships. They are people in whose presence bitterness, hatred and unforgiveness simply cannot survive. They are children of God and aim tp be at peace with all people.

To live in peace with friends is easy, but what about your enemies? Therefore it is peace at a risk: it includes peace with your enemies and persecutors.

Peacemakers are willing to venture something so that they can perform a deed of peace for the sake of Christ. To be a peacemaker is not a pious ideal or an unreachable dream; in Christ, it is an achievable goal through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit of God, enable me, for the sake of Jesus my Lord, to be a peacemaker in this world. Amen "Lord God! Help Us To Be Change Agents For You!" " Keep Moving Forward Always! "

If the Shoe Fits…

God shows us much more than a simple natural experience when a rainbow appears in the sky after the rain. Pay attention to the colors in the rainbow. What Color Are You? When we look at colors, not just those that appear in the rainbow, but each and every color, think about what they represent. We all have our favorite, but do we fit that color? If the shoe fits, simply means if a description applies to you then accept it. If the shoe fits, often leaves the listener to fill in the blank. In life we struggle with our past and fail to walk into our potential future. Your past has everything to do with what God can do for your future.

God says: In spite of what you used to be or have experienced, I can still bring you out. I know they call you by your problem and not your name, but I don’t. There is no past too troubled that God can’t redeem.

You know the story. He took a murderer named Moses and made him a prophet; he took a man named Abram and made him a father of many nations; he took a liar and a cheat named Jacob and made him a prince named Israel and blessed his seed; he took a prostitute named Rahab, called her blessed and changed her profession; he took a Christian hater named Saul and made him a great apostle, Paul. So you see, if God used them, he can certainly use you.

We’re looking for the big testimony, but the true testimony is your small simple story. The color you have chosen as your favorite, never once did you think was God’s amazing grace. Yes, I said amazing. Let’s take a closer look: White – the purity, the innocence, the wholeness and completion – It’s amazing Gold – the wealth, the success and status – It’s amazing Green – the balance, the harmony and growth – It’s amazing Red – your energy, your passion and your will to survive – It’s amazing Blue – the trust and responsibility within yourself – It’s amazing Black – the air of mystery and giving protection – It’s amazing God was amazing with his creations. We have been colored in many areas of our lives, whether it was our choice or not. We have been titled and named. We have been praised and criticized as we walk in our many colors of shoes. Some shoes hurt, some are comfortable, some are cute, some are worn out, some have holes in them, some are run over, some heels are too high, and some are too low, but if the shoe fits, wear them because your walk is a never-ending journey, and having more than one pair of shoes helps make the journey easier. Each morning, when you get dressed, look to see which pair of shoes to put on. Say to yourself, today I will let God choose my shoes for me. That way I will accomplish what He has for me to do.

Trinity CME Responds During Hurricane Ida Submitted by Linda F. Granger, Director of Evangelism

In the wake of Hurricane Ida, Elder Maggie C. Banks, Presiding Elder of the New Orleans District and Pastor of Trinity CME Church in Lafayette, Louisiana, maintained daily contact with Rev. Duane A. Hill, Sr., Pastor of Calvary Tabernacle CME Church in New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), and of Mt. Sinai CME Church in Harvey, LA of the South Louisiana Conference to assess the needs and damages created by [the storm].

Hurricane Ida crashed ashore in Louisiana on Sunday, August 29, 2021, as a category 4 storm, packing winds up to 150 mph. Ida knocked out power to all of New Orleans and the LaPlace area, blowing roofs off buildings and leaving a path of total devastation from Louisiana to Mississippi and beyond.

Knowing first-hand what it is like to survive a major hurricane, and the aftermath, Elder Maggie C. Banks took immediate action in mobilizing Trinity CME Church members and organizing a church-to-church partnership, connecting churches from Louisiana to Texas in securing emergency supplies and the necessary transportation to ensure the supplies were delivered to those in need.

Realizing the impact and scale of damage created by Hurricane Ida, Elder Maggie C. Banks reached out to the South Louisiana Region of the Fourth Episcopal District and our Connectional family for assistance.

In [cooperation] with conference disaster coordinators, the response to this call was swift and very positive.

Grants and relief funds were awarded to those churches sustaining damage from Hurricane Ida. Rev. Chris Neal and Sis. Brenda Reynolds of Douglas Memorial CME Church in Beaumont, Texas, also responded as soon as they got the call. They began to mobilize their members, requesting donations and contributions for delivery to Lafayette. They packed their van with water, baby diapers, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, paper towels, plastic plates, masks, and other essential relief items.

Rev. Christopher Nelson and Bro. Luther Martin of Cottrell CME Church in New Iberia, Louisiana, also responded. They offered to not only provide a large van, but also to help load and deliver the relief supplies to hurricane victims New Orleans.

Trinity CME Church members sprang into action by compassionately responding to the call with prayer and with action, delivering relief supplies to the Ford Center to help their neighbors (l-r): Bro. How Many Elephants in How Many Rooms?

Rowan As I “fetch” the integrity, responsibilities, and duties of my first license in 1993 on this ministerial journey, that of Exhorter, please accept this initial of several articles as my attempt to fetch that ministry of teaching in the spirit of Sankofa. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”

The word is derived from the words: SAN (return); KO (go); FA (look, seek and take).

The sankofa symbolizes the Akan people’s quest for knowledge among the Akan with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination, and intelligent and patient investigation.

The symbol is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards.

Thus, the Akan believe the past serves as a guide for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future.

The Akans believe that there must be movement and new learning as time passes. As this forward march proceeds, the knowledge of the past must never be forgotten.

This call is not an indictment of everyone holding the most powerful and esteemed offices in the Black Church. We will take up the “Bad Apple” argument in one of the later installations. And while the concerns listed are not limited to the Black church, the aim is to “sweep around our own front porch”.

How can what is detrimental for Black folk in America, en masse, be acceptable for members of the Black Church? …Particularly when the most disdained behavior of “45” (DJT) and his cronies – who are still doing his bidding – is

rivaled by the leaders in the highest echelon of the Black Church, and was so while the same Black Church leaders despised DJT. It looks quite like the pot calling the kettle black.

It is well understood that the Holy Writ describes the ecclesia as the flock, the sheep; and the called and assigned (or merely assigned) overseers are their shepherds. More importantly the overseers of the flock are God’s undershepherds.

Let’s cross reference some of the similar behaviors and consider parallels between political leadership and leadership in the Black Church against what the Word of God has to say.

Lording over: 1Peter 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 1Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 1Peter 5:3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

Of those who are elected to the office of Elder, one question in the Ritual for Ordaining Elders is: Bishop: Will you reverently heed them to whom the charge over you is committed, following with a glad mind and will their godly admonitions’?

(Emphasis added) Elder-elect: I will do so.

How did 45 (DJT) inhabit the most powerful and esteemed office in the United States? As appropriate as it may be to study, the question here is not, “How did he come to hold the office?” The question is, “How did DJT reign while in the office?”

How did his cronies reign? How have his cronies reigned even now?

They have done and are yet doing only what they believe is right for themselves and the lobbyists who have their ear above all else – even to the extent of voter suppression in order to keep their power. Conservative Republican State Legislatures are making laws for majority Democratic populaces, who generally don’t agree with the legislation. (Did someone say, “nominations for and election of General Conference Delegates; and Caucuses at the General Conference?”)

Submissions Continued from previous page DJT’s cronies covered up his illegal, unethical, and immoral behavior. Excuses are still being made, right now, for his role in the January 6th insurrection. (Did someone just ask if some Joint Board Chairs, Treasurers, Presiding Elders, and key pastors are covering up and making excuses for…?)

Retribution: Before we look at a couple of verses, the immediate concern is why DJT and any other corrupt leaders avenge their enemies. Is it because the persons who point out wrong – think Ezekiel’s description of the watchman – are actively seeking the harm of the leaders, or is it because the leaders don’t want to hear the truth? Have the watchmen and women become an enemy because they tell the leader the truth (Galatians 4:16)?

Now, if, and this is a big if, if those pointing out the indiscretions of the leaders are doing so with ill intent, the leaders should hold the Word as their guide.

Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. (KJV) But if those who seek change are simply chasing the truth for justice’s sake, why is retribution so common, seen, known, and recognized, but it continues. …at the pleasure of…

There is a long list of people who refused to be DJT’s “yes men”, do his dirty work, or sit silently that he soon fired, caused to be fired, and generally tried to ruin their work and political lives. Many he succeeded in ruining them, as it refers to the Republican Party turning their backs on whomever DJT ordered them to. Paralleling this behavior, the same takes place in the Black Church.

There were honest folk who came on board with DJT but could take it no more and soon jumped ship. (Did someone ask, “What about all of the former CME preachers who start their own churches or go to other denominations?”)

The HUD Secretary, who had to know the damage DJT was causing with his ungifted hands, remained in an office he wasn’t qualified for and hid his own gifted hands from the Americans who also knew that he (Carson) knew DJT’s 24

wrongs. As well, Carson became complicit in the harming of those reliant on HUD. Whether the Larry Elders, Herschel Walkers, Candace Owens, Jesse Petersons, etc. are sincere disciples of DJT because of his high ethics and morals is suspect. But corrupt leaders always need some hoodwinked or complicit folk who look like the oppressed to carry the torch.

DJT required absolute loyalty and subservience. (Did someone ask how many Presiding Elders and pastors are required to support wrong leadership or they will lose their appointments – “at the pleasure of the Bishop.”)

Greedy for filthy lucre: 1Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Proverbs 1:19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

Proverbs 15:27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts (bribes) shall live.

1 Thessalonians 2:5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed – God is our witness.

1 Peter 5:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; DJT inherited money and portrayed himself as the earner of that money while he withheld what he should have been paying to his workers and contractors. Giving someone an additional means of earning money does not relieve the employer of paying what is in the budget to pay for the position. (Did someone ask about leaders in the Black Church acting like the church’s money is their own, and/or assigning Presiding Elders’ pastorates to either lower P.E. salary or require P.E.s to make up District assessments out of their own pockets?)

While not releasing his tax returns is a legal matter under investigation by District Attorneys, one must wonder what is DJT hiding. They are his personal finances, for sure, and every citizen does not necessarily have a right to view his personal information. But if he falsified documents to qualify for tax breaks or loans, it should concern all Americans. If a person will lie, he/she will lie.

Submissions Now, Annual Conference Treasurer’s Reports are a whole ‘nother thing. To not submit Treasurer’s Reports that “show all revenues… and cause to be printed the Treasurer’s Report in numbers sufficient to provide every minister and lay delegate with a copy” is a violation of the law of our Zion. (Here, some Treasurers may be thrown under the bus. But we know who decides what gets printed and distributed.)

Side Note: And, what about “Episcopal District accounts”? Are they legal based on the CME Book of Discipline? Additional facts will be provided in another installation of this series.

How often do the leaders in the Black Church fall on the side of greed versus the side of service and humility?

If the leadership of our Zion is serious about caring for the local churches and providing better opportunities for ministry, full support for the recommendation by the Department of Finance & Investments, that we move away from Conference Claims as the direct and only provision for supporting the General Church should be a no-brainer. The General Secretary & CFO, Dr. Victor Taylor, and his team have developed a plan to relieve the local churches of a major portion of the General Funds required annually. Ask yourself, “Why is there opposition from those who handle the money reported by the local churches to the Annual Conferences?”

In closing: The goal of this series is not to give specific answers or solutions. The goal is to reason together and challenge each of us, who genuinely love our Zion, The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, to stand up for right, truth, and justice where it concerns our church. I am doing what is in my power to do, as I don’t have a vote in the General Conference. Do I have a voice? That remains to be seen. Do the Delegates who represent me and the members of the entire CME Church speak for me and the entire CME Church? We will see.

Some of you do have a voice and a vote. Will you use it to keep the status quo, or will you vote for right, truth, and justice?

Bad Apples Restorative Justice in The Church Listening to the Science – Subject Matter Experts on Finance

Porter St. Paul Celebrates 151st Anniversary Submitted by Claude E. Stines On Sunday, December 19, 2021, Porter St. Paul CME Church, Northport, Alabama, celebrated its 151st Anniversary. The Theme was, “Endurance: Do Not Grow Weary,” based on Galatians 6:9-10: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good (l-r): Pastor Ernest May, First Lady Valestine May, Bishop Teresa to all people, especially to those who belong to the Jefferson-Snorton, and Rev. Lawrence Jefferson-Snorton. family of believers.”

The message based on the aforementioned scripture was delivered by Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, Presiding Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District of the CME Church. In her message, Bishop Jefferson-Snorton stressed two words, “do” and “due.” It should be a privilege for us to do anything for God, considering what He has done for us. We are not due anything from Him. Sis. Wendy Bruce served as worship leader. Special presentations were given - one to the Bishop, by a local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and one to Sis. Willie B. Pollard for her longevity of service.

Together We Can: Together We Must Submitted by Dr. Jamie Capers While researching for a recent sermon series on stewardship, I came across an article by Pastor Brian Moss entitled, “The Church Isn’t Meeting My Needs,” in which he addresses what he calls misguided expectations. He writes, “A church is a place where I have the chance to change the world by fulfilling the great commission, but it is up to me to become a person of impact.” He goes on to say, “A church is a place where I can use my gifts, passion, skills, personality, and life experiences to serve, but it’s up to me to become a servant.” In his dialectical response, Moss appears to be placing the onus of Church effectiveness and success on the individual rather than on the church. Moreover, Moss believes we tremendously lack an understanding about the implication of our dereliction of service. In reflection of Moss’ thoughts, the words “Together We Can: Together We Must” came to mind. Before examining this thought, we would want to inquire or ask the following question: Who is culpable for the lethargic, lackadaisical efforts or truancy of those who fail to unconditionally offer themselves for service?

First, in many cases, leadership or the lack thereof is challenged or weakened when individuals decide to withdraw from their administrative and/or ministerial engagement with the church. Indeed, leadership does involve influence and relationships. Pastors, who serve as appointed leaders of congregations must provide the vision and find a way to garner support followed by inspiring and motivating the membership to see it through. This model is what Housman calls servant-leadership. The dilemma manifests when a church member or disciple does not embrace the vision, develops a disdain for the pastor, [or] is unclear of his or her role in the whole scheme of things. In such circumstances, the individual begins to experience burnout or begins to prioritize the temporal things of life over the spiritual. Is the pastor still culpable or is it solely the member?

Secondly, the unfortunate reality is that some pastors fall into this category of failing to engulf themselves in the ministry of the church. The issue in some churches may not be the uncommitted membership or discipleship but the unfaithful and/or burned-out pastor. For the same reasons, some pastors may develop disdain for a presiding elder or presiding prelate, thereby finding it hard to execute their pastoral ministry.

As a result, prelates find themselves in a state of dormancy and the local church finds itself without a true leader or visionary. Is the bishop and/or presiding elder culpable of or responsible for the fault of this pastor or does it fall solely on the appointed pastor?

Moreover, it is clear that the intentional daily engagement of both laity and pastors must be considered from an individual lens from a communal perspective. I contend that each of us is ultimately responsible for ourselves. Recall, Romans 14:12 states, “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God” (NLT).

However, as we continue our journey to the eternal, it is imperative we understand the significance of community. Dr. Luther Smith in his book, Howard Thurman: The Mystic as Prophet, writes, The formation of community is the teleology of life. The vision of community gives value, structure, and purpose to life; it saves life from meaninglessness, frustration, despair, boredom, anxiety, and chaos. Community is salvation; it is life at its highest level. Thurman believes that community can be realized in time and space. This vision is not relegated to another dimension (i.e., after death, in heaven, after a God initiated apocalypse). This vision is an historical (in time and space) possibility. Love has the power to form community here and now. (51-52) Furthermore, Ephesians 4:16 emphasizes the collective state of the body when all activities are synchronized in a collective whole, that works well and in harmony -- “He makes the whole body fit 26

Submissions together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” (NLT). The great poet John Donne said, “No man is an island.” In essence, each of us has a purpose in life, and the purpose is not fulfilled in a vacuum. The fact that we are first Christians (a part of the Body of Christ) and members or disciples of the Christians Methodist Episcopal Church, and a part of a local assembly makes us inextricably woven together in our pursuit to fulfill the great commission. Extending ourselves in service to the Kingdom of God aids us in leading others to salvation and making disciples, all in obedience to and in fulfillment of the Great Commission.

In conclusion, Moss’ words, “A church is a place where I can use my gifts, passion, skills, personality, and life experiences to serve, but it’s up to me to become a servant,” loom large. Each of us has been gifted by God in a unique way, and we have been called for this reason on earth. We serve knowing we are a part of a collective group of people all focused on our call to build up and edify the Body of Christ.

Yes, together we can fulfill that calling. More importantly, we should each find our place and do our part according to our unique gifts because together we must serve this present age.

A Middle-class, Individual Overview and Assessment of America Today Submitted by Dr. James Albert Hill, Sr.

The middle-class is characterized by a high material standard of living, sexual morality and respect for property, and is defined by MerriamWebster’s, Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition, as “a class occupying a position between the upper class and the lower class. A heterogeneous social economic grouping composed principally of business and professional people, bureaucrats, some farmers and skilled workers sharing a common social characteristics and values.” The question or issue for many of us seems to be, “Are we better off today than we were from 2016-2020, or are we really about the same?” Will the future be better, much better, about the same with few real changes, if any, or just a merrygo-round for many?”

When one examines the first 100 days of the new administration in 2021, we hear and see much to do [with] what has been done, but very little is said about what has not been done (especially) in a bi-partisan manner. If real progress is to be made, it must be made with all hands on deck: All for one and one for all (America). “All the people who elected the politicians must be at the forefront.”

Why is it that the last two presidents, Trump and Biden, spent their first days in office trying to undo what the former presidents left as their legacies and accomplishments while in office. Obviously, the legacies of each of the former presidents have helped a great number of the American people, but not all!

Anyone who spends a great deal of forethought on reversing what another has done for the people, must also include in their thinking, that what goes around will come back around. What we do to another will also be done to us. Therefore, one must be careful of what one does to another because we will meet our actions over time.

Is America truly ready for a change? Will change cause us to look at what former President JFK stated, “Ask not what America can do for you, rather what you can do for America?” What I can do to make America great is indeed a great concern, or should be at the core of one’s life. “Love the Lord ... love ye one another as I have loved you, is what Christ taught in St. Matthew 15:12 and St. Luke 12:33. lawyer seems to have had a problem with who he was to love because he lacked a good understanding of his neighbor. (St. Luke 10:29) A key to understanding the teaching of the Master is to understand and adopt the meaning of the terms compassion, mercy, and forgiveness.

[Many] of our Christian endeavors and thoughts are like unto a river which flows into a compassionate heart. Without a compassionate heart we are nothing but noise makers. All our legislative bodies, assemblies and/or councils theatrically open their meetings with prayer, but few if any open with love or compassion on the agenda. Many times, legislation is proposed and is passed to meet a need, because there is an outcry for the same: it’s time to do so; it will provide for me and others; and/or it’s time to have such a law on the books.

Some laws are directed to restrict, harm or reverse progress, because of discriminative tendencies.

One could go on and on as to the purpose and various motives for the legislation. We must never allow ourselves to believe that all legislation is good for everyone, it will please everyone and/or it will benefit everyone. It may work to achieve just the opposite and present an adverse condition and reaction to what was originally intended or hoped. Some of the real issues which confront Americans and others today question whether we are better off now than we were during the past four years. We must look at our schools, home life, communities, socioeconomics, socialized medicine and services, social welfare, social security, and some important socio-political and socio-religious advances, or lack thereof.

We have the best schools in the land, yet large numbers of young people are not attending for lack of money and/or incentives. Of course, there are many other reasons as well. We know where there is a poor foundation or preparation for higher education, one will never go on even if there is a small desire to do so. Faith and wishes are one thing, but opportunity is another. In many cases the lack of early preparation defeats an individual in their formative years, so that even if opportunities present themselves, there is no real incentive to take advantage of them.

Submissions On the home front there are numerous new, revised, and replications of “Jim Crow” laws in action across this land of ours. They remind one of the postReconstruction Era when much was expected and very little was given or allowable. America is now being taken backward much faster than anyone could ever believe: One is indeed amazed at the speed in many places. We are rushing down a slippery slope into oblivion. All that will remain if we do not change our course will be memories of the “great society.”

Our State Capitals, and our National Capital are places of anarchy. All we hear about in our great capitals are battles and gridlocks. The idea of mutuality does not exist among our elected officials. It seems that each party is promoting the position, “It is my way or the highway.” The overseas “police action” where American forces are engaged is much more than what is generally known or recorded for public information. In some of these places, the countries have been at war for years and will continue to be at war with no end in sight or with no real winners. It is and has been an unending struggle for centuries. The Roman Legions, the French Foreign Legions, the English Battalions, the RussianSoviet Union armies and now the Allied forces led by the U.S. are all involved and are battle fatigued from the years of combat.

The most difficult decision a world leader must make is when enough is enough and to bring the troops home with honor. When that decision is made, a large vacuum is left in the land, and the people are left feeling that they have been betrayed and deserted. “What then?” How does one rebuild trust when this event has happened repeatedly by the U.S.-led Allied forces?

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition defines DEMOCRACY as, “A government by the people and for the people: rule of the majority: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. The absence of hereditary or arbitrary class distinctions or privileges.”

Matthew Dow, the MSNBC commentator stated on Sunday, May 30, 2021, and this writer fully agrees, “If America does not re-visit and work to regain Democracy and all it stands for, nothing else will really matter.” There will be a real vacuum in our great society [in areas such as]: the Black Lives Matter movement; women’s rights and equal pay; voter’s

rights and justice for all; increased hourly pay or socalled living wages; health coverage and benefits; job opportunities and training; gay rights, homosexuality, and LGBTQ [issues]; and family, community and/or gun violence. None of these things will mean anything to America without true “Democracy” in the land.

Concerning the Gay Pride movement and Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Questionable Individuals, the big lie must stop because half of America believes the big lie; they believe what they are being told. Many Americans believe in gay rights with reservations. The reservations are based upon the fact that everyone has rights as long as their rights do not embark or infringe upon another’s rights. Do not take away my rights and liberty while demanding or seeking your rights and liberties. Several major organizations in America have been badly damaged and/or gone out of business after opening their doors to the gay individual who has committed harmful homosexual acts against the young people associated with those organizations.

In some cases, this community of individuals has been their own worst enemy. While I have no real say or choice in the matter, I liked it better when it was kept behind closed doors.

At the present rate of events in Washington, DC, and many of our state governments, one must ask where are we heading? It appears that the gridlock seen and felt across the land will soon and very soon affect the health of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. The travel, the battles at home and abroad, and some discontent or discord among his own party will take its toll on his health. We are not sure at this point if the president knows his limitations or if he recognizes the mental and emotional stress the former president’s antics has placed upon him. What if his health fails?

What will happen then? Will his party follow a woman (black woman) or will there be an irreversible form of anarchy? Further, if President Biden is unable to run for a second term, who will replace him on the national ballot? Who then will find favor with the American people?

One cannot complete or close any review or any meaningful analysis of our times without including the March 27, 2020, CARES ACT (CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF & ECONOMIC SECURITY ALERT). This bipartisan pandemic relief package was a Godsend at that time. It was the modern version of the “War on Poverty” program in America which was developed by the JFK & LBJ administrations in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. The major difference between the two was that the latter provided direct payments to taxpayers, Social Security recipients and others.

Factories were shut down, buildings, production, and trade; […] communities came to a stand-still during the coronavirus-19 global challenge and war. Long food lines emerged and were seen all over this land.

Individuals and families who have always been selfreliant in the past found themselves in those lines and at those places of support.

Many were helped with increased unemployment assistance and disability benefits.

However, as with all Federal grants, there are those who misuse and take advantage of the situations and opportunities. These few make everyone look bad and create a cloud of resentment and insult against the programs. Cries of reservation are often louder than the shouts of joy by the recipients of such assistance programs. America has helped and still helps many foreign nations, why not give a helping hand to needy fellow Americans? Often when it comes to programs in the socio-political, socio-religious, socio-economic and/or socio-historical settings, there is a lack of good comparative forethought. Our legacy, goals, proposes, point-of-view, aims and compassion for our fellow man help us view our future with eyes of hope, faith, and justice, for all this is what greatness is built upon.

According to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, the people have a right to keep and bear arms, and that right shall not be infringed upon by any government body. There may not be a great deal of documentation on this matter at this point in history; however, it is believed that gun violence and deaths are quickly becoming the major causes of deaths in many of America’s largest cities.

The coronavirus pandemic is the top killer in the world and presents a global challenge. Gun violence has also played a major role in victimizing people of all ages, creeds, colors, and stations in life. It seems that there is no end to the daily vicious circle pronounced on our TV 30

and other news outputs. There are many viewpoints as to what should be done to curb this violent activity. While the debate goes on, the victims will pile higher.

There are many who thought that the Afghanistan withdrawal would be like a walk in the park. However, that was not the case at all, and what should have been political capital for the president became the worst mismanaged, misfortune, mixed-up, misjudged calamity of the century. How will history judge this period and event in time?

Everyone has and will leave a legacy. The issue is always how will they be remembered – peace and good will, calamity, disaster, gains or losses, progress or regression, love and unity or divisiveness and division? In 2021, a large number of “red states” in America passed more jerrymandering and voterrestricting laws than at any other time in history of America. These laws will disenfranchise many who have earned and have been guaranteed these rights by their Creator and the Constitution of the United States of America. What will become of this deprived and disappointed America in which we live?

Taylor Family Foundational to Brownsville, Tennessee Submitted by Rev. Joseph Taylor, Retired

In 1904, Dr. John William Evans – a son of Frank and Fannie Marr Evans, a graduate of Meharry Medical College, and a practicing physician in Brownsville, Tennessee – married Ms. Kate Oldham.

Kate, who also lived in Brownsville, was the daughter of Shack Oldham and an unknown mother. Her stepmother was Laura Oldham. At the time of their marriage, Kate was a young schoolteacher specializing in music.

Dr. and Mrs. Evans lived in a commodious home on Bradford Street in Brownsville. They had one child, a son, John Frank Evans, born in 1907. John Frank grew up in Brownsville and attended Woodlawn and First Baptist Churches. He very likely attended Haywood County Training School and probably graduated sometime in the mid-1920s. He graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and in 1933 received a medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

Submissions Following graduation from Meharry, Dr. John Frank Evans served an internship and residency at General Hospital, Number 2, Kansas City, Missouri. By 1940, he had established a medical practice in Pittsburgh, Kansas.

He left this medical practice to serve as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. After discharge, he returned to Brownsville and began practicing with his father, Dr. John William Evans, who died in Brownsville at age 72 in Spring 1946. Dr. John Frank Evans expanded his father's practice, instituting a clinic where chronically ill patients could receive residential hospitalization. The location of this clinic is unknown but may have been on E. Main Street in the vicinity of Jackson in Brownsville. Dr. Evans also began several local business ventures, including a taxi service.

In 1950, seeking greater opportunities, Dr. John Frank Evans moved himself, his practice, and his mother, Ms. Kate Oldham Evans, to Los Angeles, California. There he was active in civic and professional organizations. He served as a director of the Los Angeles Branch of the NAACP and was a member of a number of state medical commissions.

In 1954, he married Ms. Zenobia Williams who worked alongside him as the secretary of his medical practice. The couple had no children. In 1961, Dr. Evans died of a heart attack at Temple Hospital in Los Angeles. His mother, Ms. Kate, died two years later in 1963 at age 82. Both are buried in Los Angeles. His father, Dr. John William Evans, is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Haywood County, Tennessee.

Dr. John William Evans was the great uncle of Rev. Joseph Taylor, a now-retired minister of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and second cousin of Dr. John Frank Evans.

Black History Makers of Alabama Honors Joseph Eatmon, Sr. Submitted by Angie Eatmon

In early February 2022, Joseph Eatmon, Sr. was named by Black History Makers of Alabama as a 2022 Black history maker. Joseph Eatmon Sr. is Shelton State Community College's First African American head coach in school history. Four-time National Junior College Athletic Association Region 22 and District 12 Coach of the Year, Joseph Eatmon Sr. is in his sixth season at the helm of the Shelton State men’s basketball program.

Eatmon has guided the Buccaneers to four Alabama Community College Conference championships and owns a career record of 171-38 overall, including a 152-28 record at Shelton State and an 80-13 mark in ACCC play. A total of 58 student-athletes have graduated and gone on to play for four-year programs since Eatmon arrived in 2012. He has also coached one Region 22 Player of the Year, along with a pair of All-Region 22 First Teamers, two Region 22 North Division First Team selections, and four Region 22 North Division Second Team honorees. Shelton State posted a 24-2 record on the year under Eatmon, going 14-0 in the conference, and finished the year ranked #4 in the country.

In addition to having success on the court, Eatmon’s teams have shined in the classroom and in the community.

Several of his student-athletes have been recognized on the ACCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, posting a 3.0 GPA or higher, and have spent time in local elementary schools and in the local community volunteering.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Eatmon played high school basketball at Central High School under Coach Robey Butler and was a nominee for the McDonald’s High School All-American Game. He entered the college coaching ranks in 2008 as an assistant under his now assistant, Eddie McCarter, at West Alabama, after one season as head boys’ basketball coach at Linden High School in Linden, Alabama. He served as head men's basketball coach at Alabama Southern for one season, leading the Eagles in October of 2011 to a 20-10 record and a second-place finish in the ACCC South Division. Prior to assuming the reins as head coach at Shelton State, Eatmon served as an assistant coach from 2012-16 helping guide the Bucs to the 2013 regional championship to earn a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament, and ACCC runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2016.

Joseph Eatmon graduated from the University of West Alabama with both a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on physical education. He played for the Tigers from 2004-06, under head coach Rick Reedy, earning Academic All-America honors. Eatmon and his family reside in his hometown, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A lifelong CME, Mr. Eatmon, grew up in Porter St. Paul CME Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and is presently a member of Oasis CME Church of the same city. There he serves as a trustee, and he also serves as the Director of Ministry to Men for the Tuscaloosa District. He is married (14 years) to Erica and they have 3 children, a boy and two girls, Joseph Jr. (13), Jordyn (12), and Joi (6). Joseph is the son of Angie Eatmon, a member of Porter St. Paul.

She was born in 1921 in the small community of Tadmor, Texas, and still lives there today. She worked in the home health and forest service industries before retiring in 1985. Her hobbies include quilting, gardening, fishing, reading, and solving puzzles. Now, at 101, centenarian Mrs. Adline Lamb, affectionately known as Mama ‘Line, enjoys taking it easy.

Mrs. Lamb, who observed her 101st birthday anniversary, has experienced the entire kit and kaboodle since the Roaring Twenties in addition to living through the Civil Rights Movement and being witness to the present activism of Black Lives Matter.

Mrs. Lamb is a lifetime member of the Bethel CME Church of Tadmor, where she has served as a stewardess. She is also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Married in 1943 to Mr. Jessie Edward Lamb, she has an astounding lineage including 13 children, 38 grandchildren, 107 greatgreat-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was honored with a surprise birthday drive-by celebration where she spent time with family and friends. Moreover, Mrs. Lamb was presented an official proclamation declaring February 5th as Mrs. Adline Patton Lamb Day by the city of Crockett, Texas.

Blairs Chapel Church Restoration Opening & Celebration Service Submitted by Rev. William O. Cole, Sr., Pastor “We Come This Far By Faith” ......The melodious sounds of this gospel anthem were rendered by the Blairs Chapel CME Church Mass Choir as members, friends, and guests entered the restored and renovated sanctuary of Blairs Chapel. During the initial onset of the pandemic, the church suffered severe water damage. After a one-year closure, the restoration process began. On Sunday, January 2, 2022, the Opening Restoration and Celebration Worship Service was held at 2:00 p.m.

Special Awards were also given. Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr. was presented an “Outstanding Service to Blairs Chapel” plaque for his leadership and monetary donations during this journey.

He is also a faithful member and trustee of Blairs Chapel. With his faith and steadfast alliance to the church, his professional and beautiful work was commended!

The Connectional Youth Ministry is pleased to announce CYM Salutes, a program distinguishing outstanding individuals in the area of Youth Ministry within the CME Church who are making a difference. The Youth of the Month and Youth Leader of the Month program will recognize individuals who demonstrate exemplary characteristics both in church and within the community.

CRITERIA To be nominated as Youth of the Month or Youth Leader of the Month, the candidate must be an active member of the CME Church. The candidate cannot receive the award more than once between November 2021 – May 2022.

NOMINATIONS Candidates can be nominated by any member, youth or adults, of the CME Church each month. Each person can only nominate one (1) youth (12-17) and one (1) youth leader per month. Share a brief description of how this nominee exemplifies excellent character and helps young people become better leaders, citizens, and/or members in the CME church. Nomination can be submitted from the 1st – 15th of each month on our website: www.cmecym/cymsalutes .

VOTING The selected nominees will be posted on www.cmecym/cymsalutes for the voting period of the 20th - 25th of each month.

At the end of the month, the Youth Vice President’s Council will announce one (1) youth and one (1) youth leader from each Episcopal District as the winner. The ethics of design – moral considerations in the development of assistive technology Submitted by Jo Milne University of Aberdeen

The Paralympic Games have highlighted the extremes of human endeavour and the technologies that support it, from running blades and handcycles to “sip and puff” steering for sailing.

Professor Brian Brock, personal Chair in Moral and Practical Theology at the University of Aberdeen, is a leading ethicist exploring the relationship between new technologies and disabilities.

In an opening event for the Tokyo Paralympic Games, he joined Saqib Shaikh, a blind computer programmer for Microsoft, to share perspectives on ‘Technology, Disabilities and Ethics’ with a United Nations symposium.

Professor Brock said: “As the Paralympics have shown us, assistive technology can be used in hugely positive ways to benefit the lives of those with disabilities.

“It has enabled disabled athletes to compete in ways which would simply not have been possible otherwise and, particularly as AI technology grows, we are seeing the development of intelligent machines which can help to level the playing field and facilitate social inclusion for disabled people.

“I was honoured to be able to present alongside Shaikh who, as a software engineering manager, was project lead on Seeing AI - a smartphone app that reads not only written materials but also describes visual scenes, offering much more freedom and autonomy to people with visual impairments.”

But while the use of such technology can empower those with disabilities, Professor Brock says ethical considerations for their use stretch well beyond original intentions. Their discussion ranged widely across the ethical implications of this intersection of artificial intelligence and the inclusion of people with disabilities across many activities in modern society.

“Often products for disabled people are developed as a trojan horse for things that big tech aims to make a lot of money from,” he added.

“Programs that can help autistic children to read the emotions on others faces can easily be used by advertisers to read our facial expressions as we react to their ads, for example.

“It is vital therefore to have open and critical conversation about the ethical implications of new technologies, and to pursue constructive dialogues like this one about such ethical issues as this technology continues to evolve.”

The University of Aberdeen is building a world-leading reputation in the intersection of faith and disability with a number of theologians within its department for Divinity focusing their research on the intersection between the two. It is home to both the Centre for Spirituality, Health and Disability and the Centre for Autism and Theology.

Joining the Great Cloud

Mrs. Annie Herron Mrs. Annie Maxine Robinson-Herron (affectionately known as Maxine) was born June 16, 1941, in Jackson, Mississippi, to the union of Elbert and Fairy Christine Robinson. She enjoyed her childhood. On Saturday, November 27, 2021, Maxine transcended from this terrestrial shore to a home of celestial peace.

Married to the love of her life, Oliver Herron, Maxine was the doting mother of the late Danisa Herron and Katrina Ann Herron. The love and care she had for her husband and daughters radiated through her personality.

Maxine was reared in a nurturing, Christian home and church environment. Her childhood and young adult Christian roots were in the Caney Creek and Greater Fairview M.B. Churches in Jackson. Her later years of service were at Lynch Street Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Jackson, where she faithfully served as a member of the Stewardess Board, Minerva Rhome Missionary Circle, and in the Sanctuary Choir until her health failed. Socially, Maxine was a member of The 100 Black Women of Mississippi.

Education was paramount in the Robinson household. Maxine was educated in the Jackson Public School System, received a B.S. in Health Education from Alcorn State University, and Master of Science and Specialist Degrees in Health Science and Physical Education from Jackson State University. Her love for sports began in high school, where she excelled in basketball and tennis.

After graduating from Alcorn State University, her professional career began at Rosa Scott Elementary School. She was later employed by the Jackson Public School System, where she taught and coached at Rowan, Hardy, and Chastain Middle Schools. Maxine retired after 32 years of service.

Maxine was a teacher, mentor, and friend to her students.

Welcome to the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs at Christian Theological Seminary!

Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Programs are administered by the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary.

Through its religion grantmaking, Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to deepen and enrich the lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

To this end, National and Indiana Clergy Renewal Programs provide an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God’s life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry.

Details and application materials for the 2022 programs are now available. In the 2022 Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program and the 2022 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations, eligible congregations will be able to apply for grants of up to $50,000 each to support a renewal program for their pastor. Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program.
