Will the Minutes Be Made Available?

Since the founding of our denomination as an independent church body in 1870, there have been written minutes of our meetings and of our general Conferences in particular. Though some of these records are no longer with us or have yet to be revealed, the fact that they existed at one time is evidenced by secondary records or sources that refer to them. Records and minutes are important to both the history and ongoing life of an organization. As far back as I (and many of you, my fellow CMEs) can remember and have copies, the minutes of the General Conferences have always been published either many months prior to, or around the same time as, the printing of their subsequent books of Discipline. However, we have yet to even hear about the planned publishing of the minutes from the 2022 General Conference.

I realize that some of my readers may take this as a slight against those who are somehow involved in the process, but I assure you this is not my aim. I simply want to remind us of the importance of the minutes and their obvious delayed appearance and thus absence to this point in time. Such a delay causes both anxiety and doubt - anxiety over what may be present or missing in the minutes, and doubt over their integrity and veracity. The farther out we go from the 2022 General Conference, the greater the possibilities of misgiving and mistrust.

I do not know why it took two (2) years to publish the 2022 Discipline; but since we at least now have it in our hands, that perhaps is a question for another time and another General Department. If, however, we have produced a Book of Discipline, Revised 2022, where are the minutes on which that book is based? Perhaps this is a question about which no one but this editor is concerned.

However, I do not believe this is the case, given some of the remarks I heard when the current Book of Discipline was published and offered for sale. I hope this writing will prompt either a written or an action response from someone who knows more than I know and can do more than I can do.

The present Book of Discipline does provide some regulations regarding the formation of minutes, beginning with the Resolutions Book, but it is unclear as to what happens after the meeting is over and provides no direction or time limits for the distribution or publishing of those minutes. Perhaps that is a statement in itself, and perhaps when we come to the 2026 General Conference,

we should add some guidelines or expectations and clarity to the Book of Discipline in order to concretize our desire for the distribution or publishing of the minutes so we either might understand or might not face Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor this delay in the future. I just think we need the minutes.

Here are some notes and excerpts from the Book of Discipline of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Revised 2022. ¶ 206. [determines the make up of the Committee on Resolutions which functions for the General Conference.] ¶ 206.4. [determines when the Resolutions Book for the General conference is to be printed.] ¶ 1000.7. § 1. [divides the General Connectional Board into Standing Committees which oversee the work of the General Departments and General Officers.] ¶ 1001. [This General work is divided into] three divisions: Administration, Operations, and Ministries. ¶ 1001.4. § 2. Department of Publications. Provide publication services for the church ... and be in charge of the preparation of programs, reports, minutes, etc. of Connectional conferences, meetings, and gatherings. ¶ 1010. The official organ of communication for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church shall be The Christian Index. The office of Editor of The Christian Index shall be the department of the church responsible for official announcements, notices, decisions, and judicial rulings. It is also charged with the dissemination of information concerning the church. ¶ 1011. § 1. It shall be the responsibility of the Editor of The Christian Index to secure, collate and convey all official records and documents of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church to the official depository of record for the church. ¶ 1250. The total program of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church shall be projected and evaluated by Connectional Commissions ¶ 1257. Commission on Archives and History. Purpose: To keep the history of the CME Church alive by creating an awareness of the value of the CME Church's rich history and legacy through the collection, organization, conservation, presentation, and management of archival materials, including minutes, reports, pictures, papers, books, audiovisual sources and other artifacts deemed to have historical significance.

OFFICIAL NOTICE: General Connectional Board 2024 Pursuant to ¶1000.6, §2, of The Book of Discipline, Revised 2022, the 2024 General Connectional Board, previously scheduled for Dallas, Texas, during the week of the Unity Summit, will meet Monday and Tuesday, September 2-3, 2024, beginning at 10:00 A.M. Central Daylight Time at the same site as the Unity Summit – Sheraton Dallas Hotel, 400 Olive Street, Dallas, Texas 75201.

General Connectional Board members are requested to reserve the dates of September 2nd-3rd for the General Connectional Board meeting, and to expect a call for the Standing Committees and other committee meetings from the respective Chairs of each Standing Committee or the Senior Bishop for other committees.

While we anticipate a full day (morning, afternoon, evening) schedule for the first day, we anticipate a morning to early afternoon (about 3:00 - 4:00 adjournment) for the morning and afternoon of the second day, but we will adjourn after all business is completed.

THE PRACTICE Facing now, helps us invest in those who may not look like us and those whose social and economic condi�ons may not be like ours. The text highlights the responsibility of believers; as God blesses us, we must bless those less fortunate. Can we recognize the diversity in the words of Christ? How do we manage the challenge of helping those who are oppressed?

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It was difficult for those in the text to change the condi�ons of others because of poor vision. Yes! Poor vision. They could not see the need to assist in the lives of others to make the world a beter place.

THE CHALLENGE We have the power to change the world one person at a �me, beginning within and manifes�ng outward.

Today, pray for the peace of God to be made perfect in our weakness. Seek out those in need in our families, churches, and communi�es.

Being a Christian Educator in Today’s World Rev. Pat Winston

As Christians, our lives are centered around Jesus the Christ from His birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection.

We have the responsibility to be effective witnesses as we spread the “Good News” of the Gospel. When we gain knowledge in our Christian faith, we are open to the light of Jesus and his love. Jesus’ light shines bright in the darkness of a troubled world. One of the greatest challenges in Christian Education today is the assimilation of the world’s cultural thinking into Christianity. The views of our present world are often in direct conflict with our Christian beliefs. Due to the fact that people choose to be people pleasers, Christianity is often easily compromised.

At one time, people displayed a hunger to know more about God. People were encouraged to evaluate their relationship with God and seek ways to draw closer to God. It appears that the current mode of thinking involves selfishness with little or no regard for God’s grace and blessings.

Today in our self-centered, all-about-me society, it appears that people feel that their successes and prosperity are the results of their own efforts. Many find no reason to honor God in this as they feel God played a very small part in who they have become. This mode of thinking is a challenge to Christian Educators today.

I feel the largest challenge is sharing knowledge regarding God, faith, and hope to people that feel they do not need it. This thinking is influenced by news and social media even if you are a person who avoids the news cycle which is filled with stress, fear, anxiety, gloom, and doom. Due to the various methods of communication, one cannot avoid it. If you turn your computer on, it is there. If you browse on your cell phone or tablet, it is there. If you visit social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook, it is there too. This information is filled with half-truths and untruths that cause people to make mind-altering decisions based on facts often generated by AI. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. published a book, “Strength to Love” that was composed of sermons with a focus not just on racial segregation, but with heavy emphasis on permanent religious values. I think you will find, as I did, that his words are prophetic some 61 years later. In it he wrote: “The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must be the guide and critic of the state, and never its tool. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.”

These words echo to us through the decades with its emphasis on Christian Discipleship. “Are we there yet?” So often the words of bored children on car trips lend [themselves] to the church today. Some would definitely answer, Yes, we are there. I will allow readers to make their own determination. Yet I will emphasize, we are not people without hope. When you apply this to today, we can recognize that Christian Educators have been equipped with [the things] they need. These include: The Bible: As Christian educators we seek to lead people to the truth of God through God’s Holy Word. The importance of educating God’s people about God has been shown to us throughout biblical history.

Make it Real: It is so important in Christian Education to relate biblical teaching to everyday living. People have a natural inclination to want to know how does this apply to them. There is a saying, “Make it make sense,” that I feel as Christian Educators is what we do. We take God’s Word, parables, Bible stories of old and bring them to the 21st century and 8

teach that the times may have changed, but the principles remain the same.

Continuous Teaching: As long as we live and breathe and our cognitive functions are intact, we can learn. Church School (Sunday School) and Bible Study are imperative in continuous learning. “You shall know the truth and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:32 NRSV) [This is] freedom to know God, to love Him and receive His love for us. We must continuously expose our minds to God and continue to grow in knowledge.

Christian Education is essential on our Christian journey. While the world continues to deceive many and make things seem so simple and easy, Christianity reminds us it was never supposed to be easy. Going left when everyone else goes right is not easy. Speaking the truth to the lies that many believe and trying to convince them of the truth is not easy. Walking by faith and not by sight is not easy. Our mantra has to be, “Nothing is impossible with God.” Let us keep moving forward toward the prize of serving God with our whole hearts, minds and spirits, looking forward to the day He says, “Well done good and faithful servants.” Christian Educators be Empowered.

eing a minister’s spouse is a journey, and like any other journey, there are twists, turns, ups, and downs. Methodist ministers spouses are uni ue and have a shared purpose. We have the chance to align with the church's mission and support our spouse in their calling and participate in the ministry. We also actively participate in our own “Ministers’ Spouse, Widows, and Widowers Ministry.”

n this ministry, we are given the opportunity for fellowship, personal growth, community involvement, scholarships for spouses, and scholarship opportunities minister spouses. We also provide monetary gifts for our widows and widowers of those who have been active in our Spouse ministry. These are some of the resources available to our active ministers’ spouses, widows, and widowers. s a pastor s spouse, you engage in ministries using your skills to contribute to areas such as teaching, administration, mentoring, advisement, and other appropriate areas.

Life is not without challenges. Some challenges may be lofty e pectations; you cannot be everywhere all the time This is especially true if you have children, aging parents, or other caretaking responsibilities. Time commitment is another challenge. Work often re uires considerable time. venings, weekends, and holidays are often “workdays” in this work. astors sometimes have the schedule of a medical doctor without the doctor salary rivacy and personal boundaries are also a challenge we face. The role as a leader within the church may result in loss of privacy, so establishing boundaries is critical.

alance is the key How do we balance life and ministry How can get my spouse to spend more time at home instead of always at church f you do not have a schedule, you will suffer from a lack of quality family time outside of the church which is crucial for all families. Many problems can be avoided by creating and maintaining a balance of family, friends, and work. amily time is one of the most crucial areas we struggle to balance in time management. f we fail to plan, we plan to fail God desires for us to live lives of order, not chaos. (1 Corinthians 14: ) God helps us if we will just heed God’s word. “Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1 Corinthian 14:40)

Living lives of order helps us balance other areas in our lives. So, what does that look like alance is taking time off and is crucial to effective ministry. t comes in the form of rest. We must pull away for a brief time to renew ourselves. ven esus drew aside at times. This is another part of a well balanced home. amily and couple vacations are so important and re uire intentional planning. You will never “have enough time,” so you must M time. uality time is not a lu ury, it is a necessity. t is all part of the balancing act, so make it happen

t s all about compromise. Some things are negotiable, and some things are nonnegotiable. or e ample, your presence at worship, Sunday school, retreats, and, if there are children, children’s ministries is e pected. s previously stated, we are human and there are times when we all struggle. emember, this is a journey and, on this journey, we have a common mission with our spouse. When we embrace our mission, we discover God’s purpose for our life and our struggles become our testimony. s we’ve heard so many times before: There’s no secret what God can do. What He’s done for others, He can do for you

Texas College Accepted by Alpha Chi National College Honor Society Texas College has recently been accepted by the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, one of the top national honor societies in the country. The College’s acceptance yields the chartering of the Texas Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi, Chapter 409 in Region II, Texas College’s chapter.

The Alpha Chi National College Honor Society recognizes exceptional student scholars and unites them around one goal—channeling creativity and curiosity into scholarship that serves the greater good. Alpha Chi's mission, in part, is to broaden members' collegiate experience by: Encouraging student creativity and research; Fostering excellence and service in action; Promoting personal growth through diversity; Equipping compassionate listeners and leaders Providing a path for academic and professional mentoring; and Exemplifying how to make scholarship effective for good.

Texas College is excited and eager to offer this opportunity to students. The Texas Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi will afford scholars an enhanced landscape on campus to thrive and collaborate. The College’s Alpha Chi chapter will further fuel and invigorate a robust intellectual life both inside and outside of the classroom, providing students opportunities to engage with a community of peers on campus and across the country, as well as leadership and service opportunities to build students’ résumés.

Alpha Chi also offers students a rich source for scholarships and financial awards, with many grants, scholarships, fellowships, awards, and travel stipends to support undergraduate scholarship.

Dr. Mamta Gupta, Division Chair for Natural and Computational Sciences, and Dr. Jan Duncan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, will serve as the faculty advisors for the College’s Alpha Chi chapter.

Four Students, Jada Cain, Nylah Berry, Keshun Malone, and C'Mari Hayes, had their abstracts accepted for poster presenta�ons at the conference. They displayed research projects to clinicians (pharmacists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and health professionals), health policymakers, health educators, researchers, and public and community health leaders par�cipants from clinical, research, and community audiences – whose work incorporates interdisciplinary providers engaged in addressing health dispari�es and increasing health and social us�ce.

This year's conference, a beacon of hope and progress, was �tled Social Determinants of Health eaching E uity Let s Talk Solu�ons . It delved into crucial aspects of community engagement, policy, prac�ce, educa�on workforce, and science, o ering a comprehensive approach to health dispari�es.

As members of a vibrant church we must be fully engaged in ministries that seek to improve the quality of life for all of God's creation.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, and I quote, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?"

The question has been raised, what can the church legally do in the political arena. As we know, many of our rights as a people were gained through legislation, and ironically, now, many of our rights are being taken away through legislation. The time for political involvement is right now.

You have the option of stepping forward to grow or you can step back and be safe. Please step forward and help the church to grow so that our communities can grow. This is what a true disciple must do.

The information that follows on the next two pages includes the things that a church can and cannot do. Please review it individually and in small groups to know what you can do and be pro-active and do those things that you can.

There is a quote that says: "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.

The Spouses of the Carolina Region (Charleston/Columbia District, Durham District and WinstonSalem/Greenville District) annual fellowship was held at St. John CME Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where Rev. John A. Dillard III is the Pastor, and Mrs. Annette Dillard is the First Lady. The event was held in the Bishop Bobby Best Family Life Center. It was a day of fellowship, fun, food, laughter and love.

The theme for the occasion was “Fashioned for His Glory” based on the scriptures 1 Peter 3:3-4, “ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold j ewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and qui et spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight,” and Matthew 5:16, “ In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

The day started with greetings from the Regional President and the 7th Episcopal District Representative, Lady Andrea Couch. We were blessed with a prayer by Lady Jacqueline Best.

Hines Memorial Hosts 2024 Holy Week Services Submitted by Sis. Lucy Hazel Dunn and Pastor Ore L. Spragin, Jr.

Hines Memorial members and friends who helped to host the Holy Week services.

Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Albany, Georgia, and Pastor Ore L. Spragin, Jr. hosted the six downtown Albany churches for the 2024 Holy Week services the week of March 25-29. Four of the downtown churches have been meeting for 40 years (since 1984) in joint noonday services to commemorate and celebrate the passion, pain, and joy of Holy Week. Hines Memorial has been participating for almost 20 years. There was a short break during the years of COVID restrictions, but even then each church and pastor found a way to offer ministry to the community.

Though the participating churches have remained constant, each pastor is relatively new, with Pastor Spragin having served Hines Memorial the longest, since June 2015. Pastor Mirate began her ministry with St. Paul's on January 2, 2022. The longevity of our participation demonstrates the commitment of the local churches and the Albany community to celebrating and witnessing to Christian faith, to deepening love for one another, and to promoting mutual human respect. The event lasts a week, but the possibilities are for a lifetime and eternity.

The community is always invited to attend the service which lasts approximately 30 minutes, and a meal is offered by the host church. The preaching schedule, respective churches, and attendance for worship and lunch were as follows.

Hines Memorial CME Church is located at 408 North Madison Street, Albany GA 31701, and the hearty meals were offered in the church's family life center following noon worship. It was our pleasure to serve as host this year. We thank God for the opportunity to fellowship with so many persons in the experience of Spirit-filled, ecumenical, interracial worship.

"Sunday School Attendance Among Pastors: An Overview" Submitted by Jessie Manuel

In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in Sunday School attendance in the black church. This trend has been attributed to several factors, including changing societal norms, busy schedules, and a lack of interest among younger generations.

2. Lead by Example: The pastor can show support for Sunday School by attending regularly and participating in discussions. This demonstrates to the congregation the importance of Sunday School and sets a positive example for church members to follow.

According to a study conducted by the Barna Group, a leading research organization focused on faith and culture, only 29% of black adults attended Sunday School in the past month. (Barna Group, 24) This is a significant decrease from previous years, when Sunday School attendance was much higher.

3. Provide Resources and Training: The pastor can offer resources and training for Sunday School teachers to help them create engaging and relevant lessons. By providing support and guidance, the pastor can empower teachers to effectively lead classes and connect with students.

One reason for the drop in attendance could be the changing landscape of the black community. As more black families move away from traditional religious practices, younger generations may not see the benefits or value in attending Sunday School. Additionally, busy schedules and competing priorities may make it difficult for church members to make time for Sunday School.

Another factor that may be contributing to the decline in Sunday School attendance is a lack of engagement and relevance. Some church members may feel that Sunday School is outdated or not meeting their needs, leading to a disinterest in attending.

Despite these challenges, there are efforts being made to revitalize Sunday School attendance in the black church.

Some churches are incorporating more engaging and interactive lessons, tailored to the needs and interests of their congregation. Additionally, outreach programs and community events are being used to attract new members.

A pastor plays a crucial role in helping to increase Sunday School attendance in the black church. Here are some ways in which a pastor can help promote growth: 1. Promote the Importance of Sunday School: The pastor can emphasize the value and significance of Sunday School during sermons and church services. By highlighting the benefits of attending Sunday School, such as spiritual growth, community engagement, and learning about the Bible, the pastor can inspire church members to make it a priority.

4. Engage with the Community: The pastor can work on building relationships with the community and reaching out to invite new members to Sunday School.

By participating in outreach events and community programs, the pastor can show that the church is welcoming and inclusive, attracting more people to attend Sunday School.

5. Seek Feedback and Make Improvements: The pastor can solicit feedback from church members about Sunday School programs and areas for improvement. By listening to the needs and concerns of the congregation, the pastor can make adjustments to ensure that Sunday School is meeting the needs of attendees.

6. Pray for Growth: Finally, the pastor can pray for the growth and success of Sunday School in the church.

By seeking divine guidance and support, the pastor can help create a spirit of unity and fellowship that encourages church members to participate in Sunday School. By taking an active and supportive role in promoting Sunday School attendance, a pastor can help contribute to the growth and vitality of the black church.

Through leadership, encouragement, and engagement with the community, pastors can inspire church members to participate in Sunday School and deepen their faith journey.

INTRODUCTION I am grateful that for many years, my wife has been a great supporter for me and the ministry entrusted to me as pastor within the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Together, we have traveled across Mississippi, to Arkansas and Tennessee; and attended any number of District, Regional, Annual and General Conferences. In 2013, my wife accepted her call to the preaching ministry and having maintained her standing in the United Methodist Church, she began the educational and ordination process.

In the last couple of years, the United Methodist Church has reeled from the “graceful exit” and “disaffiliation” of many local congregations and pastors. These actions hit close as my wife’s home church was one of the churches to sever ties with the denomination. This has caused her to seek a new “home church” in order to continue her ordination process as a Provisional Deacon. Many of you are aware that delegates of the United Methodist Church approved four changes to church law intended to remove the last remnants of restrictions aimed specifically at LGBTQ people.

It is due to continued discussions of sexuality and how the church embraces it in the life of ministry that I offer this article and reflection. Much of what is presented here was shared as an original post on my Facebook page on July 1, 2015. As clergy and laity of the Christian Methodist Church

and empathy as the church demonstrates faith in God. SHARED REFLECTION

Because there is so much being posted about "Same-Sex" Marriage, I'm compelled to say something. The following was posted in response to a note on my Facebook page, but somehow – I am aware some people are curious about my perspective and I didn't want this post to become lost from viewing. So, the only disclaimer I offer is, “This is my personal position.”

My friends, we aren't living in "Sodom and Gomorrah" times. We are actually living in a world filled with sin ... the same sin that was described during the fall of humanity when Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Good and Evil.

I am sure you will agree, sin is everywhere. Sin is on television; sin is in our communities, and Lord help us ... sin is even in our churches. But what is most sickening for me is the overemphasis of one particular sin. As clergy, we are ordained to perform marriages. In our context as members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, those marriages are constituted between a man and woman – as stated in our Social Creed. The Supreme Courts have the governmental authority to argue civil or constitutional matters, but the courts aren't in a position to enforce theological positions.

For a moment I wonder how you might understand the parable of the wheat and the tares? I invite you to consider this passage as Jesus said, "Let both grow together until the harvest…" (Matt. 13:24-30). This text informs us that God is the One who does the harvesting and the separating… not us.

Submissions called to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and yes, a man guilty of sin ... to “be used” as an instrument for God’s glory and not my own. I'm still learning and growing in my faith, but what I have learned so far is that my actions may separate me from God ... but I can do NOTHING to deserve God's grace. You see, the good news of the gospel is that "...while we were yet in our sin Christ died for the ungodly" (Rom. 5:8). From what I can discern, the death of Jesus Christ encompasses ALL sin, not the sin of my choosing … but ALL sin.

same-sex ceremonies in accordance with our Methodist Social Creed (see The Book of Discipline of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Revised, 2022, “The Social Creed,” ¶131.4 § (f), Sex and Christian Life). But, as my grandmama would say, “Hear me and hear me good…,” my church affiliation and doctrine cannot and will not dictate my willingness or capacity to love ALL people (i.e. those easy to love and those not so easy to love) so that God may minister through my witness and effect change in a person’s life – when that person is seeking change.

CONCLUSION

You see, I'm naïve enough to believe that God can truly "work all things for good" (Rom. 8:28), even in the face of sin. I appreciate the discussions that are forming and most of all for the opportunity to explore further my personal beliefs. If I lose Facebook and/or face-to-face friends, so be it. God be with you. I choose to believe God not only calls us “to be holy” because God is holy … but, God also invites us to share grace and compassion – just as the hymnist reminds us, “He said: Freely, freely you have received; freely, freely give. Go in My name and because you believe – others will know that I live.”

In closing, Jesus spent time and even ate with "sinners." I submit this is another demonstration of God's desire to share in relationship with humanity ... to dwell amongst humanity even in its fallen state. I'm seeking to live more fully in my understanding of the first two commandments, because according to Jesus, "all of the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matt. 22:37-40).

So, what am I saying? I'm saying that my denominational ordination doesn't make provisions for me to perform

Mental health is important for everyone, every day. I have listed a few best practices (adapted from www.samhsa.gov). I hope you will find empowering as you attend to your mental health and the health of those you love and serve.

Encourage one another to share ways to support mental health in older adults. Support older adults in aging joyfully and help them consider their passions and interests. Assist older adults in pursuing something that brings them happiness and fulfillment. If they have a disability or physical impairment impeding their ability to pursue their interests, focus on what they CAN do rather than their limitations.

Share tips and resources for parents and caregivers to support children. To raise awareness of the importance of mental health in children and teens, prepare a time during Sunday morning worship or establish a designated time to hear from a professional. Have children and youth participate in artwork and crafts that help them identify their feelings and share their challenges. Ensure the children and youth feel safe, and remain attentive to any social or behavioral changes. They might be sleeping more than usual, sharing their fears or worries, or having frequent tantrums. You might notice them withdrawing from friends, performing poorly in school, or having difficulty making friends. They may be engaging in self-harm behaviors, losing interest in things that they used to enjoy, or talking about suicide. Provide listening sessions without judgment. Listen to them – Talk to them – Pray with them.

Support maternal mental health. Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also be emotionally complex.

Remind expectant mothers it’s okay to not feel okay. Mood swings, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed are all common emotions during pregnancy. As mothers care for their unborn baby, encourage them that mom needs care too. Encourage expectant mothers to make time for themselves by helping them identify what they need to help them relax. For example, help them establish a self-care routine.

Encourage them to make sleep, relaxing, and exercising a priority whenever possible and permitted by their physician. Remind them to remain connected to family and friends that bring hope and positivity to their lives. Fathers can experience mood swings, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed. Cicadas have long been used in folk medicines, as religious and monetary symbols, and as an important source of food for humans and many other organisms ... Cicadas are medium to large insects, ranging in size from 2 to 5 cm (0.8 to 2 inches). They characteristically have short antennae, two pairs of transparent membranous wings, prominent compound eyes, and three simple eyes (ocelli) that form a triangle between the compound eyes. The insects do not bite or sting ...

"Male cicadas produce loud noises by vibrating membranes (tymbals) near the base of the abdomen.

Males of each species typically have three distinct sound

responses: a congregational song that is regulated by daily weather fluctuations and by songs produced by other males; a courtship song, usually produced prior to copulation; and a disturbance squawk, produced by individuals captured, held, or disturbed into flight. Most North American cicadas produce rhythmical ticks, buzzes, whines, or screams, although in some species the song is musical. Females lack tymbals, though some species use their wings to produce clicking or snapping sounds, often in response to the songs of the males.

" In what are among the longest life cycles of any insects, periodical cicadas emerge in spring only every 13 or 17 years, with millions of insects materializing from the soil in a matter of weeks and dying shortly thereafter.

How Shall We Pray?

The 2020s will be remembered as one of the most troubled in the world’s history, especially for the Christian Church, as it has been challenged by politics, technology, economics, the never-ending discord between nations and races, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of these, along with other concerns, has made for a society of people who are angry and afraid and struggling for answers as to how humankind can avoid creating its demise. We stand in many paradoxical spaces. Who would have thought that same technology that helped churches reach the masses during the pandemic is now one of the causes of even more significant declines in worship attendance and church membership? These and other significant issues are making it more difficult for faith communities to spread the message of hope and love upon which they have built their foundations.

In retrospect, we should understand that our current state of existence is nothing new. Our Bible provides numerous examples of generations of faith communities in crisis who eventually “take it to the Lord in prayer” after experiencing significant challenges. History, religion, and theology students look at these events and ask, “Don’t they/we ever learn?” History does repeat itself because humanity somehow forgets or ignores the lessons of its dark past.

Like our predecessors, we find ourselves in turmoil, shaking our heads and wringing our hands, wondering when God will rescue us. We have yet to learn from the biblical and historical witnesses and continue the cycle of moving from one calamity to the next without carefully and prayerfully assessing what God is saying to the universe through these experiences. There are answers to the challenges; God is speaking to us.

The disciples/students of Jesus Christ no doubt wondered how it was possible to be hopeful living in the midst of physical, emotional, and spiritual poverty. They marveled at the miracles and sat in awe of the new “theology” he laid out. They are on God’s side—all they had to do was accept the unconditional love and grace of the Creator and share it with the world. But how could they access what Jesus was presenting? The Gospel of Luke reveals his answer to their question, “How shall we pray?”

The answer that Christ gave them is the answer for our troubled world—“When you pray . . .” Perhaps we are so busy trying to “make” things better that we have forgotten the importance of communication with God. Prayer is talking and listening, discerning the signs, and seeking the guidance the Holy Spirit gives. The turmoil will change to triumph when we pray, with the idea of doing what God asks of us, as we also remember what Christ said as he sought God’s presence—Your will, not mine, be done.

Announcing the 2024-2025 Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education (CCPE) rogram

The Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program is an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations who want to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal CME Church to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

The focus of this CPE program is on ministry in the congregation. Participants must have an approved place of ministry in order to complete the required hours in ministry each month of the program. The recommendation of a presiding bishop or supervising pastor is required as well. In addition to the ministry hours, attendance at all sessions is required.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology through the Office of the CME Endorser. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $550, which includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $150 deposit once accepted into the program, and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
