Where Are the Men? This month we celebrate Father's Day. The first event honoring fathers was sponsored by a West Virginia church on July 5, 1908, although the day as we now know it did not come into its primitive form until June 19, 1910, in Washington State due to the efforts of a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd. It was first celebrated presidentially by Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and became a United States federal holiday under President Richard Nixon in 1972. (Editors, 2023) There is no one composite image that comes to mind when one hears the word "father."

The number of thoughts, images, and roles are as many and diverse as are the nations and cultures upon the face of the earth. A father is more than just one who procreates or makes a baby, though most minds will immediately go to a mental picture of the one they call “father,” recalling Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., memories of interactions with this person. A father is more than just someone who is there to play Editor with the child and have a good time, though social scientists and others in behavioral and mental health tell us that play fulfills a vital role in the development of good motor skills and mature social skills. A father is more than just a provider, though this has been a primary role of men almost since our existence in the world. A father is more than just a teacher, either by word or by example, though he does impart critical knowledge and pass on important life lessons to his children. Ultimately, for the Christian, God is seen as the ultimate Father.

For the children who are birthed into this world, the role of the man is important in the home and in the world.

Similarly, the presence and role of the man is critical in the life of the church. But when we look around us, in most of our local churches and connectional meetings, we are brought to ask the question, “Where are the men?” The CME Church long ago recognized and continues to act upon the need to strengthen the presence of men in the church and to strengthen their positive witness in the community. Preachers, who were primarily if not exclusively men in the early days of our church, were expected to be leaders and examples that the unlearned laity could look up to and follow as sources of inspiration. Almost all of the roles in the church were filled by men, with women having to claw their participation in the church. Leadership schools were initially formed for these men, followed by the establishment of men’s societies and eventually today’s Ministry to Men. On Father’s Day, we joyfully celebrate the life and witness of those men who are present in our communion and who participate on a regular basis in our fellowship and outreach. But we also continue to mark the absence of men as a whole in the worship and life of the church. Is it that the men who are with us do not witness to their faith outside of “church?” Do women do a better job of witnessing to women outside the four walls than do men to men? Are men denied leadership roles in the church and thereby feel excluded? Are men (who as a class are sometimes referred to as hunters and conquerors) not challenged by their roles in church leadership? Do they see active faith and membership as being weak? How are Christian men perceived by the larger, outside peer group of men in general?

Perhaps as the CME Church continues her trek into the future with BOLD Steps, the new name for the strategic plan of the CME Church, we can improve on the quantity and quality of the men in our midst. We can do this by helping men to see the intrinsic value they continue to have and the impact they can make in the church and in the world as they grow in the knowledge and discipline of Christ, lead and participate in establishing and developing missions, become more efficient providers and financial managers in both the home and the church, and help their local churches and communities be beacons of goodness and godliness in worship and service.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New A Word of Encouragement Words are powerful. They can build up or tear down. Words can be used like poison or a salve. We must choose wisely when choosing words to format a sentence into a question or response. This leads me to this question, “Are words chosen from our hearts or mind?” We live in a different society than a year ago. There are mass shootings, political indifferences, racial tension, natural disasters, and so much more. The body of Christ must speak life to every situation because our God is not dead. People can sit behind a keyboard and type words that are used as keyboard commandos waiting to do harm.

When we use words that are not life-giving, as believers, we will derogate from a believer’s reputation. This may be an old adage, but I was taught if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. That may not be a part of our culture today but it’s still relevant as a part of our daily lives. The book of Proverbs helps the readers to understand the wisdom of words that will edify the spirit of humanity saying, “Pleasant Words Are a Honeycomb, Sweet to The Soul, And Health to The Bones” (Proverbs 16:24) Are words chosen from our heart or mind? Well, Jesus answers it this way, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). Should we fail to read, study, and meditate on the Word of God, then our words to others and ourselves may fail to encourage anyone. Speaking of life does not mean we are reckless with our faith. It means we prefer to see things with a ray of hope and optimism. Our mental capacity to see beyond the current situation of circumstances does not deter us from knowing God is at work in our lives.

I can recall the words of Bishop Marshall Gilmore at the Dallas Ft. Worth Annual Conference many years ago when he said, “Medical students go to medical school. Law students go to law school. Preachers go to seminary.” Those words, when acted upon, changed the trajectory of my ministry. So, I’ll ask you to choose words about all people that will help them to see the greatness that God has placed in them. It’s our duty to speak with encouragement to others. It is not our responsibility to make others accept our words. You never know whom you’re talking to when using words of encouragement.

Your words may be the launching pad they were waiting for.

"The legacy I'd like to leave for the next generation of Black leaders is to do whatever in your power, in your realm, in your purpose, to ensure our children live out the full power of their magnificence." – Lagra Newman These days it's not too difficult to see the grave needs going unmet throughout our cities and communities. From increasing homelessness, the cost of living, and unemployment to decreasing governmental programs and support, there are signs everywhere of the precariousness of our situation. Yet, at the same time, we can be inspired by individuals who give unselfishly and with enthusiasm in support of our future leaders through educational scholarships.

The Graham/Webb/Kennedy scholarships result from generous Churches, Laity, and friends of our communities who are willing to invest financial resources in talented CME Youth throughout our Denomination. Below is the list of contributions from the Fall of 2022 through the current date. The need continues. Consequently, there is still an opportunity to contribute to this scholarship and make a difference.

Are You a Good Friend?

I heard the phrase, "A friend loves at all times," many times while growing up. It may have been in my home, church and school. Our elders expected us to be a friend or act friendly to everyone we met.

There were no exceptions to the rule.

I learned that it means to be nice to others, share, take turns, let someone else go first, and so on. The words have become so familiar that they are always in the back of my mind.

Proverbs 17:17 states "A friend loves at all times." The Book of Proverbs is found in the Old Testament of the Bible and is a book of moral and ethical instructions. The verses teach us how to live wise, godly lives in attitudes, conduct, and personal character.

Chapter seventeen is part of a section attributed to King Solomon, who asked the Lord for wisdom and became known as the wisest man of his day. According to research, Solomon wrote his proverbs to instruct his son and his students. But other parents and teachers have imparted these wise words for thousands of years and still do so today.

First, let’s look at the word friend. Some synonyms used for the word friend are brother, companion, fellow, spouse, lover, and neighbor. Jesus said in Matthew 22:39 that we should love our neighbor as ourselves. He even said this is one of the two most important commandments—the other being to love God more than anything. We are to think of ourselves as friends and act friendly by showing love.

Secondly, a friend must have a loving spirit. If there’s a loving spirit from within, it will show up on the outside. A friend must always show love, just as God showed love to us by having His son die on the cross for our salvation.

Lastly, a friend loves at ALL times. We can’t just be friends and show love only when we want to, but at all times. Whether it’s daytime, nighttime, mornings before coffee, evenings right after work, or any other time you can think of, all are included. And if we're supposed to love every minute of every day, it must mean we're supposed to love everywhere we go—no matter what happens. There is no excuse for any Christian to not be a loving friend.

Can you say you are a good Christian friend to everyone you meet? Do the members in your church, home or community see you as a friend to everyone? Or are you just a friend to the members of your church? Prayerfully not. We should be good friends at all times no matter the person or situation. We must “love ye one another as Christ has loved us.” Love your neighbors just as much as you love yourself. Make God pleased with your actions to love and be a good friend. It costs you nothing to be friendly to everyone you meet.

Lane College, CME Church, CVS Health Holds Grand Opening of Workforce Innovation Talent Center Submitted by Media Contact: Darlette Carver Samuels

In partnership with CVS Health and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Lane College (Jackson, Tennessee) launched the grand opening of the Workforce Innovation Talent Center (WITC) on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, with a ribboncutting ceremony at the campus's McClure Hall.

The first program of its kind at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), the WITC provides students the opportunity to learn in a simulated pharmacy environment and earn a variety of pharmaceutical-related credentials which can be stacked in addition to their degree in a related field.

The new Lane College WITC is located at 545 Lane Avenue in Jackson, Tennessee on the 2nd Floor of McClure Hall. The center was designed to house workforce development training, certificate programs, and educational programs, and will also be used as a lab to support two courses Lane College created for Pharmacy Tech and Business Management.

“The partnership with CVS to deliver a Workforce Innovation Talent Center (WITC) on our campus provides our students the opportunity to acquire career credentials to serve in CVS pharmacies and manage retail operations,” said Dr. Logan Hampton, President of Lane College. “These students will enter the workforce a step ahead of their competition. I salute and thank CVS for partnering with our STEM and business faculty to make the WITC a reality.”

The Lane College WITC is a collaborative space that includes a front store, pharmacy, small workstation, and a clean room for Lane students as well as local high school students to engage our community workforce programs and partnerships.

Paine College Leadership Calls for Strong Financial Support to Continue HBCU Legacy The "Growing Paine" fundraising campaign offers opportunity to celebrate women's leadership and ensure the institution's longevity.

[March 23, 2023 marked] the midway point and a heightened call for support of the Paine College ‘Growing Paine' fundraising efforts led by president Cheryl Evans Jones, Ph.D. During Women's History Month, which coincides with the college's capital campaign, Dr. Evans Jones and her team [...] doubled down as fierce advocates for women's rights, with a keen focus on Paine's contributions to education and equity for all. Located in Augusta, Georgia, the historically black college (HBCU) was founded in 1882 and currently has nearly three hundred full-time students enrolled.

Individual and institutional support is requested to help ensure the College meets its $6M campaign goal and continues to thrive. Funds raised during the campaign will support the college's five key strategic areas including: - Curriculum expansion and realignment - Enrollment growth - Faculty growth and development - Improving student housing to support and facilitate a modern living and learning community; and - Increasing scholarship awards Anchored by a strong board of trustees and a committed faculty and staff, the college's leadership is ramping up its call for support from the Beloved Community, including HBCU alumni, foundations, celebrities, corporations and individuals across the nation.

All organizations with a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are encouraged to include the ‘Growing Paine' campaign in their philanthropic plan.

"I'm extremely thankful for my experience at Paine College. It equipped me with the education and mindset to forge ahead in life," said Michael Thurmond, chairman of the Paine College Board of Trustees and Chief Operating Officer of DeKalb County, Georgia. "I am challenging my network to join me by giving and encouraging others in their networks to do the same. Our 60-day goal is within reach, but it will certainly take a village to help Paine College build and grow."

March is Women's History Month, which brings into focus the legacy of Dr. Evans Jones and other distinguished women across the HBCU ecosystem. Purple is recognized as the international color of women and gender equality. It is also the dominant color for Paine College which is presently comprised of a majority of women students (57%) and graduates (52%).

In 2019, Dr. Evans Jones was charged to lead Paine's turnaround. Since that time, she has achieved an array of successes such as achieving institutional accreditation by the Transnational Association of Christian College and Schools (TRACS), approval to offer distance education by TRACS, approval for participation in Division I South of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), partnering with the Augusta National Golf Club which established two endowed scholarships in the name of Lee Elder and a women's golf team for the first time in the College's history, a grant in the amount of $1.4 million from Augusta- Richmond County Commission to mitigate the effects of COVID-19, and accreditation of the Department of Business Administration by the Accreditation Council of Business School Programs (ACBSP).

Several policy efforts are underway to help ensure the financial health and long-term viability of Paine and other HBCUs including the current Georgia House Bill 235. While historic land grants and other government programs have proved helpful in the past, the vital need for the ongoing support of HBCUs, like Paine, remains.

"Paine College supports the bill introduced as Georgia H.B. 235, not simply for our institution, but for all HBCUs located here.

We are hopeful that it will receive a vote of confidence and pass," said Dr. Evans Jones. "In the interim, our students, faculty and staff need financial assistance. Paine is not only educating our next generation of leaders but also providing much-needed jobs and a hub for innovation to the surrounding community."

Friday, February 10, 2023, saw several Holsey Chapel CME Church members doing a ‘good thing’ for some of the littlest residents in the community and City of Tulsa. Dr. Clifford Harris, Mrs. Johnetta Harris, Carolyn Fulbright, and Sherrie Wallace met at Tulsa Police Department Uniform Division North to donate stuffed animals to officers.

The Lay Ministry Council of Holsey Chapel CME Church (Dr. Clifford L. Harris, Lay Leader) selected this community service project as a way to support First Responders in the community. The stuffed animals are given to children that officers come into contact with during calls where children are involved and impacted.

Captain Karen Tipler shared with church member Sherrie Wallace (1st Vice Lay Leader), “When officers are out on a call where small children are involved, the stuffed animals act as a comforting thing that offers the children a level of security during a time when everything happening in their lives is pure chaos.”

All stuffed animals were provided by church members with support and encouragement from Rev. Dr. Lawrence Murray, Pastor of Holsey Chapel CME Church, located at 1804 E. 48th St. N., Tulsa OK 74130.

MINISTRY TO MEN On the Move!

On Saturday, December 31, 2022, the Olive Branch-Sardis District (OBSD) Ministry to Men, along with the District Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and the Lay Department, visited the Union Mission Homeless Shelter at 383 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. There were approximately 200 homeless men in attendance on that day.

We began a short worship service with the song, “I Will Trust in the Lord,”, led by Mrs. Levonzell Walker, District Missionary President. Prayer was offered by Mrs. Lelia Weaver, District Spiritual Life and Message leader. The scripture, which was John 3:16, was read and explained by retired pastor, Rev. Wesley Massey. This was followed by the song, “Go Tell It On the Mountain,” led by Mrs. Geneva Richmond and Mrs. Levonzell Walker. Then a very spirit-filled meditation was done Rev. Wesley Massey addresses the gathering.

by Mr. Derrick Roberson, who spoke from Psalm 23. Mr. Roberson is the District Ministry to Men Chairperson.

Following the message, 32 men expressed a desire to be saved. Mrs. Irene Stevenson followed with a melodic solo entitled, “He Made Me.” Following the worship service, we served a hot meal of fried chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, croissants, an assortment of cakes, and sweet tea. The recipients of the meal seemed very grateful and showed their gratitude with many expressions of “thank you!”

We are so appreciative of everyone who showed up to help out in this endeavor. There was a total of 27 who came to help serve the meal. It was a mighty good day, and we give all praise and honor to God who made it all possible. We thank God for the vision that he gave Rev. Wesley Massey to begin this outreach ministry many years ago, and we are grateful that he has shared that vision with us.

Self-Care for Clergy

I serve as the Chairperson for the Ministerial Examination Committee of the Kansas/Missouri Region, alongside the Chairpersons for the other Third Episcopal District Ministerial Examination Committees, Rev. Richard McDuffie (Southeast Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin Region) and Rev. Dr. Claudia Dunlap (Michigan-Indiana Region). Our curriculum for this conference year included an array of sessions to help in the progression of the clergy advancing in our Zion, for those desiring to serve in the capacity in which God has called them.

One of the topics presented was related to self-care for clergy. This session was tag-teamed by Rev. Dr. Patricia Havis, Presiding Elder of the Missouri District, and Rev. Terry Wheat, Pastor of Wheeler Chapel CME Church in Illinois.

The participants were to provide the committee with a synopsis of the presentations, and with the permissions of the presenters, [what follows is a summary] from Rev. Edward Dow for this particular presentation. I found it to be so profound and helpful to me that I wanted to share his thoughts, in hopes that prayerfully it will bless another clergy sister and or brother as we get tied up, tangled up, and so caught up in doing God’s business for everybody else, that we forget to take care of business for ourselves!

When considering self-care in our daily lives as human beings, often times we simply think of the perfunctory tasks we must perform in our daily routines. Hunger pains in our abdomen signal to us it is time to eat. Goose bumps and shivers instruct us to put on warmer clothes. A pungent breath demands we brush our teeth and use some mouthwash. All of these tasks and many like it are basic self-care activities of every or most bi-pedal mammals that identify themselves from Homo sapiens species. However, when considering self-care for those that are in ministerial roles as Bishops, Elders, Deacons and even Lay Preachers, the actions of self-care extend deeper within the realms of our being to maintain balance of not only our body, but also our mind and spirit. The failure to address self-care in this Trichotomism of our being not only impacts our lives, but also the lives of parishioners that depend on ministers for spiritual guidance and direction.

order. They each should be free from impediments, given time to recover and provide sustenance for the long haul of our lives. When looking first at the body, it should go without saying that it is a temple and we should take care of it by feeding, exercising, washing and even clothing our physical self. Just because we view it as a temporary place for our soul to reside doesn’t mean we can neglect or abuse it. Often times we seem to take this flesh suit for granted and treat it as a shack, as according to statistics presented by Rev. Wheat: 26% of Pastors report being over fatigued and over 50% of Pastors are overweight. These statistics show how frequently we think our busy lives prevent us from overcoming these statistics, but Dr. Havis gives us some simple hints to help renovate this old shack back to the temple God created. To begin, she points to the fact that we can simply eat healthier. An article from Medical News Today highlights the same diet Dr. Havis talks about as “contain(ing) a variety of fresh, nutrient-rich foods … (to) help reduce feelings of fatigue” (https://www. medicalnewstoday.com/articles/foods-that-beat-fatigue).

Next, she points to incorporating exercise into daily activities to reduce fatigue and overweight. As she points out, we can do things like squats while waiting for food to cook in the microwave or take the stairs instead of the elevator. This interweaving and adjusting of portions of our lives can make a big difference, but we have to think about what we are doing in order to make those changes.

This brings us to the second part of this Trichotomism, which is our mind. The old idiom of, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste,” seems entirely relevant when we consider how important it is in the self-care of clergy. And drawing on my own observations and reflections as a man of the

Submissions Continued from previous page cloth, this is where we develop our talking points, our arguments, and our conclusions to “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation”( Mark 16:15).

Without the mind we become impotent and ineffectual voices in a sea of never-ending noise which is trying to sell us on the next best thing ... all the while knowing Solomon told us “there is nothing new under the sun,” so, it behooves us to be at the top of our intellectual game in order to show the relevance of the biblical past times to the people of this post-modern era. To do this, Dr. Havis shares that one of the best ways to “feed” our mind is to read; while, Rev. Wheat asks us to consider developing meaningful and rewarding friendships. Both of these suggestions allow for our minds to be stretched in ways we cannot do in and of ourselves, as each suggestion gives us insight into different and alternate ways to look at our journeys through life and possibly navigate a different course. Conversely, it also helps to confirm that our feelings are not isolated to ourselves, but many times mutual in this ministerial walk, as Rev. Wheat points out that statistics show 35% of Pastors battle depression and over 70% have a lower self-image of when they first started in ministry. We love to sing that just a little talk with Jesus makes it right, and often that Jesus is found in a person you have befriended. In other words we have to make a connection with our spiritual being though this carnal one of flesh and blood.

Interestingly, the spirt is the third and final part of the Trichotomism we must nurture and maintain when we attend to our self-care as clergy. And while each one is important, without the spirit the body turns to “dust return(ing) to the earth as it was” (Ecclesiastes 12:7) As Rev. Wheat puts it, “If the spirit is sick there will be no will to care for the body or the mind.” As important as it is to eat right to prevent fatigue in the body, fatigue can also manifest from being spiritually unfed. Shockingly, Rev. Wheat showed that 28% of Pastors report they are spiritually undernourished. Statistically speaking almost a third of pastors feel spiritually starved, thus begging the question: what are their flocks receiving? Ironically, both Rev. Wheat and Dr. Havis suggest the best way to fill the spiritual void is to disconnect. They suggest this disconnection can be as simple as taking a break or as complex as taking a trip. And it can be as silly as singing and dancing or as serious as finding a quiet place and removing all distractions. Although these suggestions sound easy it becomes quite a challenge when as Rev. Wheat shows statistically 84% of Pastors feel they are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is unclear why Christian Pastors feel this way and, if anything, we should model our lives around how Jesus lived. Rev. Wheat and Dr. 26

Havis both show how Jesus disconnected from those that were in need of His healing touch and life altering ways.

And they point out that Jesus often went alone to a quiet and tranquil place before important decisions of which none could be greater than in the Garden in Gethsemane where He confirms He is to be the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the World.

Fortunately, for us we are not being asked to heal the sick and lame, perform astonishing miracles or be the sacrificial lamb like Jesus, despite what our misinformed congregants and parishioners believe. What we are being asked, as Rev. Wheat suggests, is to heed “the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send” and [to] reply answering, “here am I, send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Each one of us, ordained and lay, have answered this call upon our lives and have signed up for “service to others, self-denial and self-sacrifice” (Rev Wheat). Albeit our answering doesn’t have to mean a figurative death upon the cross as Jesus, but rather a warning to those that have answered the call to take notice and govern ourselves accordingly. As Rev. Wheat says “We need to do a check-up from the neck up” on a periodic basis and ask ourselves: Are we exhausted but can’t sleep; do our labors feel unfulfilling where they once filled us with joy; have you lost your appetite or eat too much. And if, we answer in the affirmative to any or all of these questions, we need to do as Jesus would do [as he stepped] in the water to restore His body at the hands of St. John. We need to do as Jesus would do and read to stimulate our intellect in understanding our “purpose of being anointed to proclaim the good news to the poor” (Isaiah 61:1), and we need to do as Jesus would do and find a quiet place to reconnect from whence our spirit is from. Dr. Havis admonishes us that in order to have balance in the Trichotomism of Body, Mind and Spirit, we must take those essential breaks like Jesus in order to refresh, recalibrate, renew, re-awake and refuel. And only after we have done the re-up in our lives can we help to re-up others. More importantly, if we burn out and become weary in well doing, then who might take our place, as Rev. Wheat reminds us that, “Many are called but few are chosen” (Matt 22:14).

Rev. Edward F. Dow, III is a Denver, Colorado native and became a member of St. Luke CME Church, Denver in 1998. He answered the call to the ministry in 2011 and later ordained in 2016. He has pastored Faith Mission CME Church (2017-2019) and St. Luke CME Church (2019-2021).

Rev. Dow is married to his first lady Antoinette and they have three awesome children: Zephaniah, Grace and Fred.

He is approaching his 19th year at Dish Technologies as a Development Engineer and continues to serve as the Right Worshipful Grand Chaplain of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Colorado.

Minister Butler’s motto is, "I will do all I can, while I can, for my Lord." Minister Butler at 95, soon to be 96, is truly living up to her motto. Minister Butler is a willing and faithful servant who gives inspiration to all she comes in contact with. Whether you’re a Christian or not, going through a financial crisis is like going through a long, dark tunnel with no end in sight. There’s the feeling of isolation – when you feel hopeless and thoughts like “no one could have been this stupid with their finances” or “no one else could feel this out of control” creep into your head. However, one way to handle persistent negative self-doubts is to remember that you’re not alone. You only have to be honest with yourself and submit everything to God. Craft a plan to resolve and overcome your financial woes.

Many truths in God’s Word can help you deal with overwhelming financial situations. For instance, the Bible says that people who listen to advice and instructions are wise. So, like everyone else, Christians facing financial problems should seek help from experienced individuals. It’s best that they consult reputable local brokers to help them assess their financial situation and guide them through financial moves, including refinancing and debt consolidation.

Regardless of how you got into your financial status, the Bible offers spiritual resources to help you navigate your circumstances effectively and in a Godhonoring way. Read on to know how God’s truth applies to Christians in a financial squeeze.

How Should Christians Respond to Financial Crises? Here are three ways Christians should respond to financial setbacks: 1. Take your fears and worries to God in prayer. God is not some kind of divine butler. He does not exist to answer all our prayers while we just wait and do nothing. We shouldn’t expect or demand immediate resolutions to our money problems from God. If we want things to change, we should also change our mindset.

However, our God is the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), who comes alongside us through difficult times. While God does not promise us an easy life, He assures us of His healing comfort. The Apostle Peter’s words remind Christians to lay their cares before the God who cares for them (1 Peter 5:7). Therefore, know that you can commit your anxiety and plans to God in prayer, whatever financial troubles you experience.

2. Trust and obey God’s Word. The Bible is not written for angels but for humans needing real-world solutions to their problems. Consequently, you can expect God’s Word to guide and encourage you through your financial crisis. The Book of Proverbs alone contains many divinely-inspired counsels regarding wise wealth management. Here are some of these spiritual gems: ● People may experience financial setbacks due to self-indulgence (Proverbs 21:17) or laziness (Proverbs 24:30-34). ● In a way, debt enslaves the debtor (Proverbs 22:7). ● The Lord is our ultimate security (Proverbs 3:26).

Many other verses from the Old and New Testament speak directly to our experience relative to our finances.

In fact, some estimate that approximately 15% of Jesus’s teachings in the Gospels are related to money and possessions.

3. Seek help. As mentioned above, the Bible tells us that getting as much advice as possible is an excellent way to go about our lives. After all, even God’s Word affirms the adage “no man is an island” (Romans 14:7). It would help to consult trusted friends or loved ones regarding your financial situation. You can also seek help from reputable financial advisors who can guide you and give you tips on overcoming a financial crisis.

Christianity’s Perspective on Money and Finance Most people think the Bible teaches that money is the root of evil. However, God’s word says that the “love of money,” not money itself, is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). The Bible recognizes that humans live in a material world with material needs. Consequently, the Old and New Testaments have much to say about how we should handle our finances. Below are some biblical truths to remember regarding money and possessions: 1. God is sovereign. To say that God is sovereign is to affirm that He is on top of everything. He can do this feat because He foresees, causes, and permits every circumstance. Moreover, His sovereignty is purposeful, meaning all our experiences, including our financial troubles, has an underlying design. God’s sovereignty also means that God owns everything, including you and me. If you’re a Christian, you’re twice His – first by creation, second by redemption.

2. Christians are stewards. Because God is sovereign and owns everything, Christians must manage their finances for the sake of God’s kingdom, using their resources for God’s glory. Christians must manage money for the sake of God's kingdom, making their resources work for His glory (Luke 16:1-13). In a way, we are not God’s co-owners but His managers.

3. Materialism is wrong. Materialists put the wrong price tags on worldly and spiritual things. They value money over a relationship with God. Jesus rebuked the Laodicean Christians for being materially wealthy but severely lacking in spiritual things (Revelation 3:17-18). Our materialistic mindset blinds us to our spiritual poverty. When we’re rich, we might be tempted to think that everything about us is fine. Consequently, we don’t see the reality of our dependence on God. In conclusion, whether you are a Christian or not, facing a financial crisis can feel isolating and overwhelming.

However, there are ways to apply God's truth to navigate through these difficult times. Christians can start by taking their fears and worries to God in prayer, trusting and obeying God's Word which provides wisdom and guidance on managing finances, and seeking help from trusted individuals such as financial advisors or friends and loved ones.

It's important to remember that God is sovereign and Christians are stewards of their resources, and materialism can hinder our spiritual growth. By aligning our mindset with God's truth, we can effectively handle financial crises in a God-honoring way.

Rev. Roosevelt Louis Tinker

Evelyn C. Bender was born to the union of Jeff and Mattie Copeland on January 6, 1933, in Lee County. She departed this life on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at her home in Baldwyn, Mississippi. At an early age, she professed a hope in Christ and joined Mt. Nebo CME Church. She graduated from Baldwyn Colored School and continued her education at Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, MS where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Later, she received her master’s degree from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS. She taught school for several years in the Desoto County School District and later returned to her home of Baldwyn and taught school there until she retired. She was an outstanding basketball player, and she loved watching NBA teams, western TV shows, and Wheel of Fortune. Most of all she loved Mt. Nebo CME Church and especially the annual Birthday Tea Celebration, The month she represent would always be first.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Bender, Mississippi Industrial College (BS ’56 and a great football standout) who preceded her in death.

She was the proud mother of three beautiful children: Chandra, Willie LeVon, and DeTeena Bender. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter DeTeena Bender, three brothers, and six sisters.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Chandra Duffy and Willie LeVon Bender; grandchildren, Jamie (Justin) Hamilton, Janell and Jessica (Kenneth) Miller, and Channing Duffy; four grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild; one sister-in-law Dorothy Bush; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Roosevelt L. Tinker, a native of Greensboro, Alabama, and a resident of Mobile, AL, was born December 29, 1943, to the late Clifford and Clara Hannible Tinker. He went to his eternal dwelling with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 4, 2023. Roosevelt attended Booker T. Washington Middle School and Central High School of Mobile, AL. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army from September 1963September 1969. He met and married Betty Tyler in Columbia, SC in 1969.

Roosevelt worked for the University of Illinois Research Center for many years until his retirement and pastored several churches in Alabama including Pine Grove CME church in Daphne, AL. He enjoyed teaching from the scriptures, his spiritual education was in his home church of Stewart Memorial CME Church of Mobile. He was a graduate of AIS seminary from 1986-1989. Reverend Tinker was a member of Biblical Teaching and Training Outreach, Pastor, Teacher, and Evangelist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Tinker Sr. and Clara Hannible Tinker.

He leaves to cherish his memories a brother, Clifford (Idella) Tinker Jr.; cousins, Rovonne Williams (devoted), JD (Barbara) Eaton, Jeffery (Kristina) Eaton, Linda Eaton, Monica (Terry) Cleveland, and Vernon Eaton; a host of friends; and one devoted Pastor, Sandy McQueen, as well as devoted neighbors, Alfred and Kathleen Jackson.

Two of his favorite scriptures were: "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise," (Proverbs 11:30) and "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out."

Elder Hugh Winston Jones

One week after Hugh and Catherine were married, Hugh was drafted into the United States Army and was forced to leave his wife behind. both districts combined, creating the Sardis-Olive Branch District with Hugh at the helm as Presiding Elder. He held this position from 1991 until his retirement in 2008. During this tenure, he had several pastoral appointments including Como CME and Mt. Olive CME, Senatobia (1991-1995), Brooklyn Chapel and Bates Chapel (1995-1996), Jamison Chapel (19962005), and Lane Chapel (2005-2008).

Hugh was concerned about the members of his district and often appointed himself at churches where there was previous conflict. He wanted to ensure that all issues were resolved before bringing a new pastor into the fold. Also, although Hugh was presiding elder, he often appointed the larger churches to other pastors and was oftentimes left with several small churches to pastor himself. When asked why he did that, his answer would be because they needed a pastor as well.

After his retirement, Hugh continued to labor within the CME Church and was a fully supportive member of his home church. He was appointed as supply pastor to several churches within the SardisOlive Branch District including Pleasant Grove, Beacham Chapel, Peters Chapel, Free Springs, and Shiloh Churches. He continually offered assistance to the local and district assemblies until his health precluded him from being actively involved.

Outside of his ministry, Hugh was a man who enjoyed spending time with Catherine, who he affectionately called Kitty, and Angela. With the addition of Andrea and Olan to the family in 1983 and 1984, Hugh became a devoted grandfather and later a beloved great-grandfather known as “Pappy.” He was the quintessential grandfather and great-grandfather.

Hugh was like a big kid with his grands, often taking them to amusement parks and watching cartoons with them every Saturday morning. The backyard at Hugh and Catherine’s became the neighborhood playground as he purchased swings, a trampoline, and a swimming pool to provide his grands with a safe place to enjoy life. He only became more involved when his greatgrandchildren were born. He could often be found drawing with Ty or taking long walks with Londyn and the dog after she did his hair. He also tried to pass along his piano skills to Londyn.

Along with a huge appetite for food, Hugh also enjoyed a huge appetite for life. He appreciated celebrating those closest to him. One day after celebrating his 89th birthday and what would have

been his 67th wedding anniversary, Hugh Jones peacefully bid farewell to this earth on May 6, 2023.

He is able to reunite with and kiss his loving wife Catherine, hug his two children, Angela Hulene and Olan, and play with his great-grandson Olan Jr. He will also be able to recount fond memories of the good old days with his parents, Marsie and Gillie Jones; four sisters: Mary E. McGhee, MarsieRee Willett, Alcola Wright, and Lillie F. King; and five brothers: Tecumseh Jones, Edwin Jones, Bernard Jones, William Jones, and James H. Jones, who all preceded him in death.

Hugh will be remembered fondly by his daughter, Terri Lynn Bennett-Jones (Kenneth), his two grandchildren, Andrea Smith and Olan Smith (Crystal); and three great-grandchildren, Londyn Rooks, Tyquivrases Mack, and Zyria Jones, all of Memphis, TN. He also leaves to reflect on his life: five sisters: Lena M. Johnson, Castella Williams, Robbie Robinson, Doreen Barnes (Joe), and Zell Long; one brother, Charlie Lane; sisters-in law Louise Jones, Irma Jones, Virginia Jones, Ceola Fulton (Silas); and one brother-in law: C.T. Thomas (Carolyn). Hugh was a part of a large extended family of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins who also mourn his loss. Lastly, a large community of congregants and friends within the CME Church will also truly miss his faithfulness and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Hugh is now resting from his labors. His mind has been renewed and his body has been restored. The impact from his works and words will follow him well beyond the time he spent on earth. Hugh will always be remembered for his undying faith in Jesus Christ and for the multitude of spiritual sons and daughters that he influenced. Many are deeply humbled and honored to have walked alongside him and to have served under him and with him on this Christian journey. When asked how he is doing now, Hugh can truly say, “Like Never Before!”

Addi�onal Informa�on about the Nurturing Children’s Grant: A message from Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton Thank you for all the interest in the most recent grant received by the CME Church! I am overjoyed to see so many of our churches interested in developing or expanding their ministry to children. Below are some basic facts about this grant and the program it will fund.

1. The name of the CME program is “Reimagining Children’s Ministry”. This program will be part Lilly Endowment, Inc.’s “Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer” ini�a�ve.

2. The program design is very strict in order to meet the funder’s criteria.

3. The program focus is on prayer and worship with children ages 6-11. An addi�onal focus is on how to include children with learning disabili�es.

4. Our primary goal is to create resources that can be used by all churches throughout the denomina�on. These resources will be culturally sensi�ve, age appropriate, inclusive and consistent with CME beliefs. The program’s aim is to study what types of resources best meet the needs of children ages 6-11, including those with learning disabili�es.

5. We have only received no�ce of the award. No funds have actually been received yet.

6. There will be no funding available for needs or requests that fall outside of the grant’s program design.

7. The program will not begin un�l Fall 2023. The first steps will be to organize all of the things needed to support the program (staff, legal documents, training materials, website, etc.)

8. Par�cipa�on in the program by 12-15 local churches will be by invita�on, although there will be a process by which local churches can express interest in par�cipa�on. No�ce of this process will be sent out in late summer 2023.

9. There will be an extensive selec�on process because the local church and its children’s ministry leadership must meet program criteria and commit to being a part of the en�re four-year study.

10. The role of par�cipa�ng churches is to assist in the development of resources materials, to use those materials in their new or current children’s ministry, and to report results that hopefully demonstrate an increase in children’s par�cipa�on in worship and in understanding and using prayer.

11. There will be small grants of around $1000 available for par�cipa�ng churches to purchase materials they need to implement the program. There are no funds available for local churches that are not a part of the study.

12. Par�cipa�on guidelines are strict because we must train par�cipa�ng church leaders, collect data and file reports on the progress of the program.

While the number of local churches who will par�cipate ac�vely in the program will be a small group, we believe all local CME Churches will see the benefits and will have access to resources that will help them reimagine their children’s ministry. The Program Development Office will con�nue to seek other grants to assist other local churches with their needs for computers, materials, etc. However, to par�cipate in any future programs or grants, local churches need to be able to demonstrate they have a sound program design, a record of good financial stewardship, and the commitment of the leadership and membership of the local church.

I am available to present a session on “Equipping Your Local Church for a BOLD Future with Faith-based Funding” to local churches, presiding elders’ districts, or annual conferences, virtually or inperson to provide further guidance.
