Editorial

"Put on a Happy Face" I recently watched a history of Broadway and the Jewish people on PBS entitled, "Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy." One thing said toward the end of the documentary was that a characteristic of the "poptimistic" broadway song is that "it allows you to sing your way into a new world." (Josh Kun, Music Critic) Such songs were described as expressions of the American life and spirit. However,they also vocalized a misery and longing for something different. It must be noted that such artful expressions were not and are not necessarily truthful expressions of the Jewish reality in this country. They were and are, nonetheless, artful expressions of the hope and dream of new reality in the midst of Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor present dreariness. Paradoxically, and simultaneously unfortunately, there was assimilation of the songs by the larger, "white" populace and thus some of the Jewish culture, but not of the Jewish people. This was particularly poignant as the show documented the development of the song, "America the Beautiful" by Irving Berlin. It was said that as the song grew in popularity, it almost replaced Francis Scott Key's, "The Star Spangled Banner," as America's national anthem. However, there was a continuing social movement to characterize Jews in America as less than desirable ... not wanted. Those "modern day" Jews were navigating survival in a hostile world. Interestingly, in the 1920s Cole Porter, a non-Jewish writer, reportedly proposed to become a hit author by writing "Jewish" tunes. Is this cultural exploitation?

The Broadway song, "Put on a Happy Face," by Lee Adams and Charles Strause may conjure images of Psalm 137 where Babylonian captors demanded their Jewish prisoners of war to sing a jubilant religious song. Or it may arouse historical memories of Blacks who while enslaved were made to be sources of merriment for their white slavemasters and overseers. Not long ago, a president named Trump, and others of similar mind, made a chorusing statement to professional Black athletes to "shut up and dribble," in response to those athletes' involvements in protests and civil rights activities. More recently, Kevin Gough, the white defense lawyer in Brunswick, Georgia, saw fit to request that black pastors be barred from the Ahmaud Arbery murder trial courtroom, as if to say their role is to amuse or distract the people, but they are not to otherwise be taken seriously. The predominant but waning culture would say to all others, "Give us your arts and culture, your minds and your bodies - or in some cases, we will take them by force - but your soul is of no value to us. Regardless of what we do, sing and dance."

I also recently viewed, "Blackface & Hollywood: A Brief History," on the cable channel TCM. In a focused way, we see the exploitation of Black people and cultures to the benefit of White people. Enslaved blacks are misrepresented as happy, their masters are deceitfully portrayed as benevolent, and the entertainment world is callously disrespectful. A version of the song, Put on a Happy Face," became the background jingle for a Windex television commercial. The notion seems to have been that the world is a brighter, happier place when you can see clearly through your own windows. Looking out at the world through dirty windows creates dirty viewpoints and opinions.

Yet that is what we as Blacks, and many other minorities, have been asked to do, to look out of dirty windows, often made of ill-conceived, erroneous, and racially biased information and to be happy about it. Put on a happy face.

Sometimes, it is necessary to put on a happy face when you are not so happy. It may be a coping mechanism or a way of getting by in order to get to the next place in life, but it must not become one's pervasive or permanent alternate reality. Matthew 6:16-18 does call for an outward mask when fasting, but this is not a false pretense of spirituality that seeks the favor of human beings; rather, it is a real concealment of the self for the sight and favor of God only.

During this Black History Month, we especially remember that our Black culture, our African homeland, and even the blackness of our skin have been both ridiculed and stolen. And often we have been told to grin and bear it; that it is already okay, and, if not, get over it. Yes, we can rejoice in the Lord, but there is much to cause concern. There is a time to laugh and a time to cry; a time to dance and a time to mourn. A time to be silent, and a time to protest. Like artistic expressions, we do not all do it the same way, but we must all find a way to do it. Otherwise, we allow not only our cultures but also ourselves to be co-opted into presenting a view of ourselves as Black people that is simply not true. We should not be quick to "put on a happy face."

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Expanded For Clergy And Religious Workers Bishops, Please share with your pastors who may have student loan debt.

Members of the clergy and other student loan borrowers engaged in religious-oriented work may now qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program after being excluded for over a decade. New regulations that went into effect July 1, 2021 expand PSLF eligibility to this new class of workers.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness allows federal student loan borrowers to discharge their student loans after working in positions with government or nonprofit organizations for at least 10 years. The program requires 120 “qualifying payments” to attain eligibility for loan forgiveness. These payments must meet several criteria: • • •

Payments must be made on a Direct federal student loan. Not all federal student loans are issued under the Direct lending program.

Payments must be made under an income-driven repayment plan such as IBR, PAYE, or REPAYE. Payments made under the 10-year Standard plan also qualify, although this would repay the underlying federal loan in full within 10 years.

The borrower must make on-time payments while working as a full-time employee for either a government agency or entity, or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

“From Where I Sit …”

“How to Avoid Probate Court…”

During the Christmas season we received a holiday postcard from the Probate Court Clerk for our county (Shelby County, TN) with some thoughts offered for consideration which I thought could be helpful to our Retirement Plan participants and our membership in general. Having at the end of December recently closed my late sister’s estate which took 2½ years, I also know from personal experience the importance of these suggestions and the burden and expense that could have been avoided had my sister known these ideas.

This Probate Court Clerk’s suggestions were entitled “How to Avoid Probate Court” and included the following: 1) Name beneficiaries on accounts that can be directly passed to someone such as life insurance policies (including employer group plans), non-joint bank accounts (I’m just finding out about this myself), and other financial accounts such as retirement accounts, annuities, and investments accounts.

2) Consider Joint Ownership of any real estate or real property. You will need to consult an attorney or certified financial planner to determine the specific requirements pertaining for your local state, etc.

3) Consider contacting an attorney about creating a “Living Will” or a “Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care”. A “Living Will” can express your decision to refuse medical attention should you become terminally ill and unable to communicate your wishes. A “Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care” allows you to appoint a person to make health care decisions for you should you be unable to do so for yourself.

4) Plan for how you would like your assets to pass along to your loved ones when you are deceased. An attorney can help you prepare a Will even if it is just a simple one. Revisit any beneficiaries you have designated regularly to make sure everything is up to date.

Of course, I am not intending to provide advice in these areas and our Clerk has cautioned the need to seek legal and professional counsel with each of these suggestions. Over the past 12 years, I have often referenced some of the above, but I like the simplicity of this edited presentation from the postcard we received. Anyway, considering these suggestions is a good starting point. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” The season of Lent is upon us, a time of penitence, reflection, and devotion to God but also a time for us to shift. As we look to internal commitment, we should also consider we can take the Gospel outside the four walls of the church. The person and congregation must see others who are struggling and need someone with a passion to help with the obedience of the great commissions of Jesus Christ found in Matthew 28:17-20, Mark 16:14-18, John 21:15-19, and Luke/Acts 1:8. Not only is the need for teaching, preaching, practice and participation, but also for dedication and obedience.

Leaders must begin to pivot because the church, which is the community of God’s people in the world, is not separated by denomination, ritual, and by-laws. As we come together to fulfill the great commission by actively setting out thoughts on a “GO” attitude during this Lenten season, we can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and care for the widow and the orphans.

Why my church?

Why not your church? It is particularly important that your church has representation in the greater community. All churches have a reason to take part in the holistic ministry and a universal way of engaging with the intercultural and cross-cultural ministry. We must consider that all of us can learn something from anyone. Unfortunately, at times, our minds are closed to innovative ideas, concepts, and theories. If our minds are closed, so are the places where we serve God and attempt to reach God’s people. Your church is a part of the holistic community and the mission of Jesus the Christ; the world needs Jesus, and your congregation is essential to fulfilling the need. The vision must be written. Most importantly, the vision must be plain and precise.

How do we get involved?

One of the first ways to get involved is to recognize the power of 'community’. The fact is we can do more together than individually. Getting involved takes extraordinarily little effort. However, staying engaged may be a greater challenge. Initially, we do not mind starting new things, but once the newness wears off, then it is back to comfort, convenience, and familiarity. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his “I Have a Dream” speech said it best, “Now is not the time to cool off and take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.” The importance and urgency cannot be compared to the slothfulness of individualism.

Why now?

The power of community extends beyond the faith community that is called the local church, and even the larger community where the church is found. The community I would like to discuss is the global community. This Global community is the epicenter of all of God’s people from different ethnic backgrounds, creeds, and colors getting involved in finding those persons who are hungry, naked sick, and caring for the widow and the orphans. Society has silenced the voice of those in the margins, and many people are not fortunate as others. People and communities have been oppressed by many factors: political, educational, religious, social, and economic. When the church recognizes its strength as a community, then the Church will get involved. We cannot wait; we must get involved and get involved now!

We are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

LAITY EMPOWERED BY THE GREAT COMMISSION: ASSISTING, INSPIRING, AND ENCOURAGING This February 2022 Helping Hands Bulletin is a continued reflection on our Lay Ministry Quadrennial Theme, Laity Empowered By the Great Commission: Reaching, Teaching, and Ministering to All Generations. In this writing, allow me to remind us of two of our objectives, which will further assist in making this theme come alive!

As laity and Lay Leaders, we must Assist Individuals in Developing Personal Evangelism. . . If we are to live out this objective, the spirit of evangelism must become personal. Thus, if we know and believe in the word of God, we must share it. Personal evangelism is the act of a person sharing the gospel with another/others through both words and deeds. Hence, personal evangelism is the responsibility of every believer, for God calls each of us to different tasks and provides us with different gifts, but the goal is the same—the salvation of the lost (defending the cross, reaching the lost, and equipping and encouraging the saved). 1 Corinthians 12:6–7 says, There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men and Luke 19:10 teaches us - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Further, we must work to Inspire and Encourage Current Members to Become More Informed About the Church. . . As laity, regardless of challenges, our speech, attitude, and actions should be ordered in a way that causes others to develop a desire to learn about and understand the whole of our church. . . That being said, there are some who have a desire to only serve at the local level of our Zion (church), but if they understand and appreciate the inter-workings of the CME Church, they may kindle a desire to support the whole. Inspiring others means, in part, including them in the work that is to be done, thus we must always have a desire to equip ourselves so that we can assist in equipping others. Consider these scriptures as foundational for this objective: Romans 14:19 – So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another; Ephesians 4:11-12 - 11 – And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; Ephesians 4:29 – Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

It is said that God places us in strategic positions for influence, not privilege. . . We have neighbors, co-workers, friends, and relatives who need to know about Christ, as well as members of our congregations who need inspiration and encouragement. Thus, we must follow the words of Jesus, when He spoke to His disciples in John 9:4 - As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work!

OUR MINISTRY TO WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS The Ministers’ Spouses Widows/Widowers Department has at its core the ministry of support and encouragement to the families of the ministry. We are pleased and thankful to God for allowing us to send gifts to 270 widows and widowers during the 2021 Christmas season. This work was accomplished through the sacrifice and work of our members across the connection.

Aging While Black: The Crisis Among Black Americans as They Grow Old

After a lifetime of racial and health inequities, Black seniors are at risk of spending their last years with declining health, little income and virtually no savings.

Numerous studies have noted that Black Americans have worse health than their white counterparts, including chronic diseases and disabilities leading to shorter and sicker lives than white Americans.

The article further illustrates that the crisis is worse among Black women. Most of the survivors of ministry personnel of the CME Church are women. Lack of retirement provisions, health care, and housing stability have increased their vulnerability.

The pandemic then increased the isolation these precious servants experienced.

What can you do?

Please join us in praying for our widows and widowers. When you can, reach out to them with a call or card. It will brighten their day!

Additionally, we ask for your assistance in keeping good contact information for these families. Many are not able to attend their churches and become cut off from familiar congregations. Phillips School of Theology 26th Pastors' Conference and 78th Founders Day Submitted by Ore L. Spragin, Jr. Editor, The Christian Index

The Phillips School of Theology (PST) 26th Pastors' Conference and 78th Founders Day was observed virtually on Monday and Tuesday, January 10-11, 2022, via the Zoom platform. President-Dean Paul Brown guided the conference with the theme, "Getting Back to Basics: The Evolution of the Black Pulpit; Its Present Condition, Its Future Impact." In his opening comments, he asked whether we need to change and responded with a "yes." Everything in life evolves, or changes. He went on to ask whether the church, the CME Church, can evolve, and again answered with a "yes," only this time adding the proviso that pastors must step out of the ordinary, traditional, usual ways of thinking and doing things. According to Brown, this present generation is still hungry for the Word, the truth, but is not using the same methods to arrive at that truth as persons did in times past.

PST Alumni President Dr. Clarence Kelby Heath suggested that we awaken from our sleep to a newness of ministry, comparing such a step to the awakening kiss received by Sleeping Beauty from the son of the king after her spellbound sleep of 100 years.

Dr. Lance Watson offered the first of the B. Julian Smith Lecture Series on Monday evening. The second, given on Tuesday evening, was presented by Dr. John Kinney. A summary of their works follows.

Dr. Lance Watson We as blacks have had to deal with both the sin of slavery and the slavery of sin. America became great not because of capitalism, entrepreneurship, or ingenuity, but on the free labor and backs of enslaved and oppressed Blacks. We overcame all the obstacles of slavery and made it through all the significant changes in American history because of the Black church and the Black pulpit. Black preachers in every age have led in the struggle for freedom and built on the foundation of the people and church that came before, all built on the foundation of the Word of God. The caliber of preaching that sustained them in the past was preaching that did not hide when things got hard. Rather, it preached refuge in God in times of danger. In times of danger, we will run for cover, but to where will you run? The Black pulpit has always proclaimed Almighty God as our refuge. Avoid, turn from, run away from insufficient choices. The legacy of the Black pulpit is a faith that brings you our, brings you over, and brings you through. "Those who have fled to God never need to flee from people ... Christianity is more than what you say; it is what you do."

CME-Affiliated Schools Having covered the kind of preaching that has sustained us in the past and brought us to the present, Watson then addressed the caliber of preaching that will sustain us in the future. "It does not confuse 'down here' with 'up there.'" He observed that there is no one kind of Black preacher or preaching, saying there is a great diversity of ministry and style but it all, and they all, proclaim the sovereignty of God in the human experience and life. It speaks to the situation down here and points to the hope up there. God is watching closely in order to deliver. The best news, however, is not that God is watching but that God WILL deliver. May we preach that now and forever. Amen.

Dr. John Kinney Preaching must be approached by the question, "What do you see?" Preaching ought release the hearer from the restraints of culture and earthly power to the power of the possibilities found in being restored by God and in the Spirit of God. To be the preacher is to open oneself to the possibilities of God. Examination of the text should and will lead to some new understandings that are congruent with the revelation and purpose of God but are in conflict with traditional understandings.

Three observations on the theme were made: (1) The nature of evolution means that something is in a state of movement. Movement is essential to life. (2) Diversity is the foundation of community. What is your purpose, and what are your goals? How does your method (preaching) help you achieve them? (3) One of the lies concerning creation is that God is above you, and the other is that you are worthless.

We don't want to be officiants at the funeral of the Black church. "If we are to reclaim the pulpit, we can't just preach Jesus, we have to preach what Jesus preached."

Significant, also, were presentations by two members of the College of Bishops, Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas and Bishop Othal H. Lakey, on the topic, "Has the Black Pulpit Evolved?" and a dramatic production by the Commission on the Concerns of Women in Ministry (CCWIM).

Bishop Thomas stated that the Black preacher has always preached a full gospel, even before there was such a denomination or church group calling themselves by that name. Those who stand to pronounce the word must include a social gospel ministry of action that comes alongside the word spoken. It is still our task to live out the ministry that defined and described Jesus, but we must embrace the terminology and people as they exist today. The ministry of Jesus was a social justice ministry; we must examine how he executed that ministry. What did it look like? How was it presented?

Bishop Lakey began by dissecting the theme and saying, "What we're really talking about is preaching

by Black preachers in the context of the Black religious experience." But we are also talking about style, which is as variegated as the number of Black preachers. Preaching style has indeed changed over time. During the Great Awakening in America, the style was characterized by the evidence of the Holy Spirit. It was vocal and did not require an education, but it did require a call [calling]. After the invention of the cotton gin, preaching style changed. The resulting "slave gospel" was intended to create or promote docility and obedience. Instead, the slave preacher came into the knowledge and under the influence of the unfettered gospel. the style changed with the contextual change.

The CCWIM pronounced the pulpit as both noun and verb. It is a symbol of truth, and it is each person who is the vessel that God chooses and uses by their life to reach others with the gospel. The pulpit finds its place in the church and also wherever the "preacher" goes and serves, or acts. The pulpit is a door, liberator, elevator, and doorkeeper/[usher] in all its capacities and expressions. "The pulpit can't go no further than you ... What you gonna do with your pulpit?" "I don't just HAVE a pulpit; I AM a pulpit." The skit concluded with these words from Rev. Dr. Regina Reese-Young:

If all we ever do is encourage, God's people will be comfortable but they'll never reach the place of prophetic confrontation. if we only challenge, God's people will only struggle to see the love and grace of God but never really embrace it. And if we do not equip them, if we don't give them tools and strategies, we don't teach them how to watch, fight, and pray. If we don't expand their understanding of God and our interconnectedness and the body of Christ, then the only church that will ever matter is our local one. The pulpit can only go where we are willing to go. The pulpit can only grow in the areas that we are "herageous" [courageous] enough to confront. Will you be a pulpit, a carrier, a vessel? Will you be a warrior, a truth-teller, an ethical prophet? Or will you just be an eloquent speech writer who uses the pulpit as a cheap accessory? The evolution of the pulpit depends on the revolution you are willing to start. It depends on the war you are willing to wage and the rebellion you aren't afraid to lead. God evolved; so can the church. God evolves; so can you. Jesus rebelled, and it made a difference. I AM a pulpit, and SO are YOU. Preachers for the conference included, Rev. Janci Finkley (Monday, 7:00 p.m.), who preached from I Kings 17:1-9, "You Were Made for This;" Rev. Kenneth Miller (Monday, ~ 9:30 p.m.), who preached from Job 19:6-19, "The Helper Needs Help Too;" Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr. (Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. Founders Day Chapel Service), who used Luke 3 as the basis for his sermon, "When Jesus Went to Seminary;" and Rev. Dr. Clementine Mays (Tuesday, ~ 9:30 p.m.), whose Biblical text was Philippians 3:13 and whose sermon title was, "The One Thing."

The outstanding ministers for 2022 in each episcopal district (numbered) were presented by their respective bishops as follows: Rev. Anretha Walker (1st), Rev. James D. Melton (2nd), Rev. Renee T. Johnson (3rd), Rev. Duane Hill (4th), Rev. Pearson McGhee (5th), Rev. Cindy E. Causey (6th), Rev. Dr. BeverlyAnn Austin (7th), Rev. Ben Reese (8th), Rev. Charles Hames (9th), and Rev. Akila Wilson Said (11th). No one was named or presented for the 10th Episcopal District.

Recipients of Alumni Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were Nyla Barker, David Young, and Christopher Neal. The Commission on the Concerns of Women in Ministry Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton Scholarship recipient will be named and awarded at a later date. The Presiding Elders Council Scholarhips in the amount of $500 each were Tiffany Echoles, Carlotta Ficklin, and Samuel McKinsey. The Bishops Spouses Scholarships in the amount of $500 per person were given to Christopher Neal and Veronica Brown. The Vergie Gant Women in Ministry Scholarship in the amount of $500 was awarded to Janet Corley.

The Bishops William Graves and Edward Lynn Brown Award was given to Bishop Kenneth W. Carter for his outstanding work in the areas of church growth and evangelism. The Bishop Henry M. Williamson Lay Service Award for instrumental impact on the CME Church or the seminary was presented to Mrs. Barbara Bilberry. The Bishop Othal H. Lakey Clergy Service Award for a non-alumnus who has helped the seminary was presented to Rev. Phoebe Presson. The Bishop Paul A.G. Stewart Institutional Ministry Award given to someone in the academy, or in the alternating year to someone in the field of chaplaincy, was presented to Dr. William Larkin, a academician The 2022 Distinguished Alumnus Award for an alumnus who has distinguished oneself in ministry was given to Rev. Larry Batie. The Bishop E. Lynn Brown Episcopal Award for an episcopal leader who has demonstrated outstanding leadership was given to Bishop Marvin F. Thomas, Sr.

Darian S. James is a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, born to Mrs. Dietrich Shuler and Mr. Jerry James.

Inspired by her selfless grandmother, the late Rachel E. Jones, to live by the ‘Golden Rule’, Darian’s passion and purpose is to make a difference in the lives of others. At an early age, Darian’s parents instilled in her and her younger brother, Deion, that faith, respecting others, working hard, and excelling academically are extremely important for success. After graduating salutatorian from Felton Laboratory School, Darian went on to attend Orangeburg-Wilkinson (OW) High School. At OW, she was in the International Baccalaureate (IB) honors program and was a member of the basketball team, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Key Club, and National Honor Society. Darian was selected as student of the week, month, and quarter at the Technology Center, a career development center where she found her love for engineering. Additionally, she served as a delegate for the 2010 Palmetto Girls State, and as captain of the girls’ varsity basketball team for two years.

Some of Darian’s honors included the Partners for Minorities in Engineering and Computer Science Al Butler Leadership award, the Technology Center’s Completer Certification in Engineering, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Award, and the Outstanding Character Award, to name a few. In 2010, she was named WACH FOX TV’s “Teen to WACH” and at the end of the year was selected by a judging panel as the overall winner for 2011. In addition to her involvement and academic achievements, Darian continually volunteered. She delivered Meals on Wheels with her grandmother and volunteered at various events like the Kidney Walk

and Relay for Life. She also tutored as many as 7 teammates several hours each week, served as an HIV Prevention Peer Educator, and much more.

After graduating in the top 1% of her high school class, Darian went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from South Carolina State University where she was a scholar, leader, and public servant. On campus, Darian was a member of several organizations including the Honors College, Louis Stokes South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation, the Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and NSBE, to name a few. She earned several scholarships including the SC LIFE Scholarship, SC State Achievers Scholarship, URS Corporation Scholarship, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Scholarship. In addition to her involvement, Darian was committed to career development and secured an internship each summer. She interned with URS Corporation, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy. While at SC State, Darian was very active in her community. She promoted HIV awareness and volunteered at the soup kitchen, nursing home, local events, and schools. In 2013 she was featured in the NSBE Magazine in an article entitled ‘Women Excelling in Nuclear’. Darian was also featured in a PBS NewsHour segment and article that examined outstanding programs and students at SC State, despite the institution’s well-publicized financial hardships.

Darian earned her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she just recently defended her doctoral thesis. While at SC State, one of Darian’s closest friends was diagnosed with Stage 3 Multiple Myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow). Her friend’s battle was instrumental in her decision to pursue a doctoral degree. Taylor recently graduated from the University of South Carolina in May 2021, where she earned a Master of Mass Communications. While pursuing the degree, she worked as Graduate Assistant for a Media Law course and a Visual Communications course. During her final semester, she completed her practicum with United Way of the Midlands as a Communications Intern, where she continued to expand her knowledge and skills in marketing, writing and visual storytelling. At the completion of the practicum, Taylor was offered a full-time position as the organization’s Communications Manager, which is her current employment.

Her parents, Melvin and Lori Anne Taylor, instilled in her the importance of working hard and helping others along the way. She has volunteered with Transitions Homeless Center, Richland County Public Library, Habitat for Humanity, and United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium. She hopes to continue to use her skills to advocate for all who lack the necessary resources to live a sustainable lifestyle.

Qwendolyn N. Etheredge was elected Mayor of Ridge Spring, South Carolina, on August 10, 2021. She is the first black and first female to be elected to this position in the history of Ridge Spring. As well as her late mother, Annease Etheredge, Ms. Etheredge has lived in the community for over thirty years. After graduating from Ridge Spring – Monetta High School, she attended Clemson University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Qwendolyn has worked for twenty years in the Healthcare Industry and is currently employed by UnitedHealthcare as a Network Engagement Manager.

She began her work with Ridge Spring as a member of the Ridge Spring Harvest Festival Committee, serving as chair of the beauty pageant. She felt the need to serve her community and ran for councilwoman and

won that seat. During her tenure, she has worked with the ACTS organization for two years to help provide monthly food banks and other community service needs.

After much prayer, Qwendolyn decided to run for the position of Mayor of Ridge Spring. During her campaign, her goals were to increase growth in the community, provide additional services for youth and senior citizens, and bring broadband technology to the community. One of her main goals is to bring the community together in order to help Ridge Spring become a premier city in South Carolina.

Ms. Etheredge is a life-long, faithful and hardworking member of Saint John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where she works with the Sunday Church School and the Board of Christian Education and Formation.

Ronald Peaster is first a father, familyoriented person, and molecular biologist, who believes it takes a village to raise a child. Ronald was born to David and Delores Peaster in Columbia, SC, and spent his childhood in Batesburg-Leesville, SC, where he attended the prestigious Twin City High School (K-12) until it was destroyed. Ronald then transferred to the Batesburg-Leesville Public School System in the fourth grade and graduated in 1980 with his high school diploma. Ronald migrated to Harlem, NY, and then moved to Brooklyn, where he raised his two children and eventually embraced communities of children by starting a summer youth program which he named R&B Youth. The program became a platform for other opportunities and expanded to an afterschool program, which inspired Ronald to pursue a college education in order to one day acquire the credentials needed to lead a major program.

Unable to find work in his field after working various jobs for three years, he decided to return to college to pursue a master's degree in order to be able to work in the biological field. In 2014, he enrolled in a master’s program at The City College of New York in a neighborhood where he had lived for sixteen years. While in this program, he had the privilege of being trained by a renowned immunologist, Dr. Jerry Guyden. Ronald worked on a project studying systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which is a very debilitating auto-immune disease.

After presenting his work to identify mechanisms that may be involved in auto-immune response in transgenic mice at Tuskegee University

in AL, Ronald was invited to pursue a doctoral degree in Integrative Biological Science (IBS). He graduated from The City College of NY in 2016 with a masters in biology and was accepted in the IBS program at Tuskegee for the fall of 2016. Within the first six months in Alabama, Ronald underwent two major surgeries. However, he would not quit, and in his second year, he challenged himself to enroll in a Master of Public Health program while continuing his Ph.D. studies. In the spring of 2021, Ronald graduated with a Master of Public Health degree and will be completing his Ph.D. requirements in the fall of 2021. While Ronald has an interest in the biological sciences, his dream continues to be developing infrastructures and programs to improve the quality of life of youth worldwide in communities that lack resources.

Ronald is an affiliate member of Saint John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Leesville, SC.

Reaching Our Youth and Young Adults Submitted by Young Adults Committee Therese Singleton and Mittie Edmond

Proverbs 22:6 tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

The Lord God is working in a mighty way within the Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Trinity CME Church in Lafayette, Louisiana, under the leadership of our Pastor, Elder Maggie C. Banks.

Trinity’s Young Adult Committee has a special role in helping Young Adults discover their purpose, their path and how they can use their gifts in a positive way. The Committee talked and truly listened to the young adults, seeking their needs, their hopes and their fears. And they invited them to come, participate and make a difference in their community and in the Church. Embracing the call to this ministry, the young adults planned to deliver a message on the fourth Sunday of each month during this conference year.

The year exploded into action with a message delivered by young adult, David Carney III. His chosen topic was, “What Are We Gonna Do?” Scripture was taken from Matthew 6:24-34, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

In July 2021, the powerful word was brought to life by young adult Cecil Wiltz II. His chosen topic was, “The Devil’s Work.” Scripture was taken from Luke 17:11-19, “Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’”

In August 2021, young adult Victoria Ned set us all on fire. Her topic was, “Time and Preparation,” and her scripture reference was from John 9:4, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work."

In September 2021, young adult Christopher Weathersby, the grandson of Elder Maggie C. Banks, Pastor of Trinity CME Church, brought a Holy Ghost inspired message reminding us of God’s plans and promises for our lives. His topic was, “What Happens When You Walk in Your God-Given Purpose?” His Scripture reference was from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Our list of young adult speakers for this conference year goes on with anticipated, to-the-point excellence! These presenters and young leaders are bringing the Word of God and making things happen!

Today, churches are called to do something new and innovative in reaching our youth and young adult population in their ministries. Rev. Maggie C. Banks had the idea of a 4th Sunday explosion using our young adults as speakers, with other young adults, youth and children participating throughout the service; the capable young adult leaders spearheaded this and brought it to fruition. Their involvement made them feel like a valued part of the church family, serving God and also serving the church.

The young adult leaders held their first “Meet, Greet and Reconnect Brunch” at a local restaurant following the July 2021 Presentation. It was a precious time for the young adults and their families to connect and catch up on life events. The well attended, relevant, spirit filled, and delectable experience was enjoyed by ALL! The group [planned a] second event later in the] year.

Beginning ... the 2022 conference year with an abundance of blessings, the young adults, youths, children and the entire congregation of Trinity CME Church are surely in for eye opening, thought provoking and growth enhancing lessons the entire year from Trinity’s young adults. Trinity Church will continue praying with and for our young people, instructing them, teaching them and setting good examples. We will continue to, “Train up a child in the way he should go...and let the church say, “Amen”!

St. Paul Highlights Breast Cancer Awareness Submitted by Charlotte Jones Nurse Health and Wellness Chairperson

The St. Paul CME Church, Atlanta, Texas, had their annual Health and Wellness program, October 10, 2021. October is breast cancer awareness month, and during this time, many women and some men get mammograms.

The program highlights three breast cancer survivors. This year we recognized Survivor Gladney, Survivor Levingston, the black owner of Tough Kookie, and one of our fourteen year survivors, Survivor Rhonda Dolberry, who was our keynote speaker and is a proud member of the Miles Chapel CME Church in Texarkana, Arkansas, First Episcopal District. Mrs. Rhonda wears many hats in her local church and is active and visible in the Texarkana community.

As a point of information, breast cancer is a factor in the male population, just as it is in the female population.

Known examples are Richard Roundtree and Mathew Knowles (father of the popular singer, Beyonce) Rev. Richard Tennison and 1st Lady Gayle were pinked out for the occasion. (See pictures on opposite page.)

Elizabeth Woods Wiseman: Oldest Delegate to the 31st Session of the NEMS Region Annual Conference Submitted by Rev. Mary D. Cole, Pastor

On Friday, July 23, 2021, Hurts Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of Olive Branch, Mississippi, (Northeast Mississippi Region) celebrated its oldest member and delegate, 106-year-old Mrs. Elizabeth Woods Wiseman.

The celebration included a “who’s who” of CME leadership including: Bishop C. James King, Jr., Presiding Bishop; Dr. Clementine Mays (Presiding Elder, Olive Branch-Sardis District) and Rev. Willie Mays; Rev. Bobby G. Wilson (Presiding Elder, Holly Springs-Oxford District and Assistant to the Bishop) and Mrs. Virginia B. Wilson; Rev. Q. H. Whitlock (Presiding Elder, AberdeenTupelo District) and Mrs. Linda K. Whitlock; Dr. Wayne A. Williams (Presiding Elder, Greenwood-Jackson District); Rev. Mary D. Cole (Pastor, Hurts Chapel); and a host of friends and relatives.

Rev. Mary D. Cole served as worship leader and welcomed program participants to the podium with a spirit-filled song followed by prayer.

Tributes were made throughout the night in honor of Mother Wiseman by the program dais, CME members from the region and district, and a host of family and friends. Flowers from the church were presented by Mr. Paul McClough, after which, the food was blessed, and an elaborate dinner was served.

Mother Wiseman reflected on her life and legacy. She attributes her long life to her faith and belief in Jesus Christ and her long-standing membership in the CME Church. The ceremony was closed with fellowship.

Over the following days at the 31st session of the Northeast Mississippi Annual Conference held on July 25-26, 2021, in Olive Branch, MS, Mrs. Elizabeth Woods Wiseman was the oldest delegate to the conference. In addition to this historic blessing, Mrs. Wiseman also commemorated her 94th year of membership with the Hurts Chapel CME Church, having given her life to Christ at the young age of 12.

Mother Wiseman is a living legend and champion for the church, and her reputation precedes her. We thank God for her unparalleled service and dedication to the church and her life-long commitment to her community.

The greatness of God is evident in her life, and His unmatched favor is undoubtedly a testament to her steadfast faith and commitment to serving the CME Church for nearly a century. In fact, Mother Wiseman has served in many roles at her home church, Hurts Chapel in Olive Branch. She served as a member of the Trustee board, Secretary of the Church, and a Stewardess. Mother Wiseman also sang God’s praises as a member of the choir and welcomed members to Hurts as president of the Usher board. She used her talents to instruct the young and old as a Sunday school teacher while helping to 32

She has never failed to seek the Lord’s will in her efforts to keep the doors of Hurts Chapel open and keep its parishioners focused on serving the Almighty God. Undoubtedly, there is never a time when Sister Elizabeth is not supporting the Church. Under her leadership as Women’s Day, Church Anniversary, and annual Prayer Breakfast chairperson, countless dollars have been raised over the years. She is always willing to give of her time, talents, and financial gifts.

Mother Wiseman’s background is to be admired. She continues to keep God first in her life, having remained faithful to the Christian life and all the precepts prescribed in the CME Church. Born in 1915--a time of great oppression for African Americans, particularly in the South--she did not accept a life of poverty and doubt. Sister Wiseman has remained a good servant! She and her husband, the late Walter Wiseman, raised their children in the ways of the Church. They sent five of their seven children to college and proudly watched as all their offspring prospered in their careers. Today, we can proudly say that the Wiseman family is five generations strong!

Sister Wiseman has made it possible for almost everyone she comes in contact with to inherit a vision of life's possibilities. We applaud her faithful belief in God as evidenced by her tireless work, her uncountable hours of service, and innumerable financial support to the Hurts Chapel family and the Olive Branch community. We congratulate and give honor to this extraordinary Christian woman, for nearly 100 years of service.

The family expresses appreciation to Pastor Mary D. Cole for the recognition of Mother Elizabeth Wiseman, as the oldest member of Hurts Chapel CME Church and the oldest delegate to the 31st session of the Northeast Mississippi Annual Conference.

The Connectional Youth Ministry is pleased to announce CYM Salutes, a program distinguishing outstanding individuals in the area of Youth Ministry within the CME Church who are making a difference. The Youth of the Month and Youth Leader of the Month program will recognize individuals who demonstrate exemplary characteristics both in church and within the community.

CRITERIA To be nominated as Youth of the Month or Youth Leader of the Month, the candidate must be an active member of the CME Church. The candidate cannot receive the award more than once between November 2021 – May 2022.

NOMINATIONS Candidates can be nominated by any member, youth or adults, of the CME Church each month. Each person can only nominate one (1) youth (12-17) and one (1) youth leader per month. Share a brief description of how this nominee exemplifies excellent character and helps young people become better leaders, citizens, and/or members in the CME church. Nomination can be submitted from the 1st – 15th of each month on our website: www.cmecym/cymsalutes .

VOTING The selected nominees will be posted on www.cmecym/cymsalutes for the voting period of the 20th - 25th of each month.

At the end of the month, the Youth Vice President’s Council will announce one (1) youth and one (1) youth leader from each Episcopal District as the winner. The selected youth and youth leader’s name, picture, and a brief statement will be showcased on our website and social media accounts. CYM will also present Youth of the Month and Youth Leader of the Month certificates. In June, we will vote for a Youth of the Year and Youth Leader of the Year.

A Prayer for Haitian Refugees

September 29, 2021 | by Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner | NCNW National Chaplain and President of Skinner Leadership Institute| barbarawilliams-skinner.com God of our weary years and our silent tears, we come before you as Merciful Sustainer, Compassionate Redeemer, and Loving Savior on behalf of wounded and maltreated Haitians seeking asylum in America. Lord, we know that your ears always hear the cries, and your eyes always see the needs of desperate refugees seeking a better life in our land. Hebrew 13.2 reminds us that you will judge nations by the way they treat immigrants and refugees: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

We pray, as well, for Haiti, a nation devastated by natural disasters, neglectful leaders, gang terror, systemic poverty, and a nonfunctional government causing so many Haitians to flee. So, we praise you for faith organizations worldwide extending humanitarian aid to Haitians as acts of love and mercy.

Lord, Black Americans and people of conscience everywhere were recently traumatized by viral images of fairskinned border patrol officers mounted on horseback lashing reins as whips at Haitian refugees as if they were runaway slaves. With stomachs turned at these despicable images, we pray your mercy for our wealthy nation filled with leaders who believe our shores should not welcome more people of color, especially those from Haiti. While our government swiftly removed thousands of Haitians from under a Texas bridge, we pray right now for the removal of longstanding inhumane and unjust immigration policies impacting people of color. Whether acting out of malice or neglect of past administrations, we pray that our government would end Haitian deportations and uphold the domestic and international legal obligation to asylum rights and the highest standards of refugee laws.

O Lord, our God, our human courts, and government policies have too long co-signed discriminatory refugee policies and practices based on the immigrant’s skin color. So, we appeal to you as the Chief Justice of Heaven’s High Court to move on the hearts of our leaders to enact humane and just refugee policies that bring glory to your mighty and magnificent name, Lord Jesus, Amen!

David Cecil (D.C.) Hazel David C. Hazel, Jr. (D.C.) was born on February 8, 1935, to the late Mr. D.C. and Mrs. Lucy Lee Johnson Hazel. He was educated in the Dougherty County School System and was a graduate of Monroe High School. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Navy, where he served honorably for five years and achieved a rank of ES. He was afforded the opportunities to attend and graduate from San Diego Junior College, Albany State College (now University) Fort Valley State College (now University), University of Georgia and Georgia Southern University.

David joined Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age. He served as an Usher.

On August 15, 1967, David Hazel Jr. married the love of his life, Hilda Mosley.

David C. Hazel, Jr. knew that he was called to serve his community. Mr. Hazel, affectionately known as "Coach Hazel," was a great teacher and mentor for over 40 years. He taught at Thomasville High School and Camilla High School before committing his career to Monroe Compre­hensive High School (MCHS) in Albany. He would later become one of MCHS's "Influential" teachers. His passion for coaching and teaching the youth to honor and respect sportsmanship amongst each other was an inspiration for many.

Mr. Hazel was never too busy to enjoy all that God had for his life. When he wasn't coaching, he enjoyed refereeing a multitude of sports for the State of Georgia. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and also a member of the American Legion Post 512 in Albany, Georgia, where he enjoyed shooting pool (pool shark), playing cards, dominos, and horseshoes.

David C. Hazel, Jr. transitioned from this life on October 30, 2021, and is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Claudia Hazel Tabor; and his brother, Reverend James Hazel. He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving, caring, and devoted wife of 55 years Hilda J. Hazel; two sons: Derrick Hazel and David C. Hazel III, both of Albany, Georgia; his one 42

and only daughter, Dawn Hazel Hightower of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Nathelia Nelson, and one brother-in-law, The­odore Mosley, both of Albany, Georgia; five grandchildren: La'Chelsea (Harold) L. King of Tifton, Georgia, Preston Hazel of Shreveport, Louisiana, Claudia Bell of Atlanta, Georgia, Taylor Hazel and Raleigh Hazel, both of Albany, Georgia, three great grandchildren: Trinity King, Hailey King, and Harry King, Jr., all of Tifton, Georgia; four siblings: Ora Bullock, Nellie Thorne, Lucy Dunn, and Rodgers Hazel, all of Albany, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will truly miss him dearly.

Rev. Usoro Daniel Usoro Usoro Daniel Usoro was born November 11, 1965, in Ikwe Community in Ndon Eyo to the late Pa Daniel Udo Usoro of the Royal Nung Nkan Etuk Kindred, Ibekwe-Ikwe and the late Obongawan Grace Usen Inwang of Nung Nkanta, Ndon Eyo in Onna Local Government Area (LGA).

Rev. Usoro began his early education at the Q.I.C. Group School, Ndon Eyo and completed at Olodi Primary School, Warri in Delta State. He later was enrolled in Okotie Eboh Grammar School, Warri, where he obtained a General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.). Having lost his father when he was at a tender age, he could not further his education until he had a divine call to preach the gospel. At that point he joined New Waves Bible Institute, an affiliate of International Association of Victory Bible Institute, Tulsa, USA, where he was awarded a Certificate in Leadership Ecclesiology and Church Planting.

After his secondary education, he gained employment with Western Geo-Physical, a seismic company that explored oil in the Niger Delta Basin.

He started the job unskilled but through dint of hard work grew to become a driller. Indeed he was a man of many parts spanning through preaching, politicking, and business. In all those fields, he succeeded in carving a niche for himself. He would be remembered by his church members and other followers for his captivating, spell-bound sermons, incisive scriptural

discourses, and great oratorical power. In the business world he rendered services in drilling, rentals and recreations, and served as CEO of Ideal Ventures, U.S. Rental Services, and Extrude Drillers till his death.

Rev. Usoro was a loving husband, an admirable model, a morally upright man who positively taught his family members the way of the Lord. His conduct and relationship with people in life was moderated by his faith in the Lord and good parental upbringing.His impressive education earned him several nicknames in the community, including "A.B.C." and "General." He was a good mixer, a peace lover, a disciplinarian, and a cheerful giver who welcomed everyone warmly. Usoro subscribed to religious and civil organizations like Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Red Cross Society, and Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio. His admirers and adherents will miss him for his boldness, honesty, and infectious sense of humor.

Rev. Usoro was also a seasoned and a Godfearing politician. At the beginning of this political dispensation, he chaired the then All Peoples Party (APP) that metamorphosed into the All Nigeria Peoples Party in Onna LGA. Until his death, he was an active member and stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party. He served as Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of PDP in Onna Local Government Area in 2020 Local Government Polls in Akwa Ibom State.

He will be remembered as one who mentored young politicians and gave inspiration to successful ones.

Rev. Usoro made his greatest mark as a shepherd in the Lord's vineyard. He started his Christian life in Christ Apostolic Freedom Church where his mother worshipped. As he matured, he embraced the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CMEC). He distinguished himself in the various ecclesiastical assignments given him, ranging from roles in sanitation, ushering, choir, Sunday school, and leadership of Y.A.C. of Oniong Nung Ndem District. He was awarded a Local Preacher's License in 1995 during the Charge Quarterly Conference of Oniong Nung Ndem District of the Western Zone of CMEC. His first port of call as a preacher was Ikot Ebekpo CMEC, where he built the church and won souls for Christ.

His missionary journey had taken him through CMEC Ndon Eyo, Mkpaeto, and Ikot Nkan at the early stage of his pastoral work. In all places, he built legacy projects to the admiration of the members.

He made steady progress in the ministry through steadfastness and excellent services and was thus ordained a Deacon in 1999 by Bishop L.L. Reddick III. In 2001, he was ordained an Elder, elected into Full Connection, and posted to CMEC Iwor Etor. In 2002, Bishop R.M. Cunningham became the new presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District and upon arrival appointed Rev. Usoro the Conference Interpreter. In 2004, Bishop Cunningham appointed him as a Presiding Elder and posted him to the Ekpene Ukpa District. In 2006, Bishop Kenneth Carter became the Presiding Prelate and made Rev. Usoro his closest and dependable ally. In 2009, Rev. Usoro was transferred to the Ukam District of the Southern Region. He 2010, he was also appointed as interim Presiding Elder of the Esetang District where he laid the foundation of the Presiding Elder's quarters.

In recognition of his passionate services in the work of the kingdom, Bishop G.T. Umoette (2014) elevated Rev. Usoro to the position of Chief Administrative Coordinator (CAC) of Nigeria Conferences and Presiding Elder of Ikot Akpan Ishiet District. In 2014, he was moved to Oniong East District while still doubling as the CAC of Nigeria. His services as a Presiding Elder ended in 2020 when he was reaffirmed as CAC of Nigeria Conferences of the CMEC. He was a very strong pillar of the Church and a mentor to many preachers of the gospel.

Rev. Usoro was an incorporated trustee of CMEC duly registered by Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria. He attended the 37th, 38th, and 39th (2010- 2018) General Conferences and the 2013 and 2015 Unity Summits of the CME Church.

Rev. Usoro Daniel Usoro, having fulfilled his due season and time on earth, joined the saints on June 27, 2021, after a brief illness. He fought a good fight and kept the faith till death came knocking. Though he's departed, his lovely memories will forever remain in our hearts. He is survived by a host of family members.

Welcome to the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs at Christian Theological Seminary!

Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Programs are administered by the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary.

Through its religion grantmaking, Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to deepen and enrich the lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

To this end, National and Indiana Clergy Renewal Programs provide an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God’s life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry.

Details and application materials for the 2022 programs are now available. In the 2022 Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program and the 2022 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations, eligible congregations will be able to apply for grants of up to $50,000 each to support a renewal program for their pastor. Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program.
