150 Years of Growth through Orderly Transition

Congratulations and blessings to the CME Church on a history and continuing legacy of 150 years of meaningful Christian ministry in the name and service of the Lord Jesus Christ!! We have grown from a church of two active bishops over a denominational membership of 67,889 members c.1872 (1873) in roughly two episcopal districts in the continental United States to one of eleven active bishops over more than two million members in eleven episcopal districts, more than twenty countries, and over three continents. We have grown from a largely illiterate constituency to a highly literate and professional one, and from having no advanced schools of our own to having established a multitude of high schools, trade and technical institutions, and institutions of higher learning, of which four colleges and one seminary remain viable and continue to be administered in whole or in part by the CME Church.

We began our existence as a mission project of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, but 150 years later we ourselves are engaged in many missions to others in the northern hemisphere and are probing opportunities below the equator. We have grown from a denomination having little voice in political matters to one weighing in on those politics that matter socially to our constituency, thus contributing to the larger, community conversations from our theological perspectives. We have grown from a largely male dominated body to one in which women provide a profound and ever-increasing positive impact on the life and witness of the church. These are just a few accomplishments and mile markers in the life of the CME Church.

For 150 years, this has been the church of our fathers and mothers – John Wesley, Samuel Watson, Robert Paine, Holland McTyeire, William Miles, Richard Vanderhorst, Mattie E. Coleman, Helena B. Cobb – but through the changes and exigencies of time it has developed into so much more than they possibly imagined. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has witnessed and actively participated in

the progress of the church and the world, through its ecclesial body.

This has also been 150 years of Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor overwhelmingly orderly Connectional transition from one administration to the next. Yes, there have been battles fought, and victories won, and defeats acknowledged … and the Church has adjusted and “rolled on.” Unfortunately, to the detriment of the local church, transitions from one pastoral administration to the next and transitions of succeeding local church officers are not always orderly or peaceful, though they should be. Perhaps as a member of a church whose system of government reflects that of the national government, I should say more here.

I join with so many others in offering congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris on being elected the 46th President of the United States of America and the first African American/Asian/ Jamaican and woman to hold the office of VicePresident, respectively!! Not enough can be said about the historic nature of their individual and collective candidacies or about their individual journeys to the White House. May they bless God, and be blessed by God, in the administration of the oaths of their respective offices.

Notwithstanding the joy that many persons in America and around the world still feel after the votes were cast on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, and the results were called on Saturday, November 7, the election has been clouded by the foolishness of the current president, Donald J. Trump. Both the popular vote and the number of electoral college votes earned have affirmed the desire for a change in the Oval Office, but President Trump has made known his Continued on next page December 2020 • The Christian Index

Continued from previous page intent to not cooperate in any required or otherwise cordial and traditional way in the transition and succession of power. To this end, he has fired people in his administration, and blocked and intimidated others from performing their administrative responsibilities to assist in the transition. The United States as a whole has said to the sitting president that his time is up, but his response has been that of a spoiled child rather than that of a mature and responsible adult and sworn government official.

As we are bewailing such shameful behavior emanating from the highest office in the land, it may be helpful to visit transitional behavior within the church, bearing in mind that most of us should have already heard and learned these things growing up in the CME Church.

1) Most of us are not appointed or elected for life. We receive our positions for a defined period of time.

When your time is up, leave. This is not saying to leave the church; it is saying to leave the office in a peaceful and orderly manner. Creating disorder and chaos, going out kicking and screaming, does the church no good; in fact, it does harm to the body of Christ and its unity in the Spirit. The one who cannot and does not exit with love becomes an agent of Satan to sow discord among the brethren and (as I heard it once said) "sistren."

2) You can determine how people will send you off: Go in peace vs. Get out. Knowing that you hold a godly appointment to serve in your particular office of ministry, it is to the good of your name and memory to do the very best you can. Your works do follow you in this life and in the life to come. No one expects, or should expect, you to be perfect in the execution of your duties, but faithfulness to the office and a willingness to cooperate with and learn from others are basic requirements explicit and implied in our Book of Discipline and installation ceremonies. (Support of those who hold office by the general membership is also in there.) If you seek to do these things, especially in your last days, you may expect a "Go in peace." But if you spend your time in bitter anger and disruptive behavior, you should expect a "GET OUT!"

3) Someone is going to follow you. A follower of Christ will help those who come after them and will give whatever assistance they can to help them have a smooth transition into office, making themselves available as necessary to promote organizational efficiency. However, when your time is up, you should engage in limited mentoring, not messy meddling. There is an observable and consequential difference between the two.

Mentoring promotes success; meddling promotes self.

For 150 years, we have been a Church of orderly transitions, just as we expect there should be a proper and orderly transition from one president to the next in these United States of America. Indeed, processes have been established to make it so - and for good reason – the good of the nation. When it is time for you to go, remember that this is not your church; it belongs to and is maintained by God. You are not greater than the church; you are but a member of the body, though a significant member. Our function or purpose within the body is not to build up ourselves, rather our purpose is to build up each other and thus the body. Mr. Trump should not have run for office or taken those vows if he were going to act like this; he should have known it then. If America did not know it then, we know it now. When your and my time is up, for Jesus' name's sake and the sake of the Church, I hope and pray we do not act like him.

A SEASON TO REMEMBER AND ACT “To everything there is a season ….”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) Dear CME Family: Four years ago about this time, I wrote President-Elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his election as the 45th President of the United States of America, and to pledge to pray for him. I had not voted for him, but believed then and now that it is right for Christians in our country to pray for and lift up our leaders. These have been four difficult years, watching a President who lacked, in my opinion, too little grace too many times. Often I have been troubled by his leadership, and I am relieved to see it coming to an end. Yet, he was elected, he still is our President today, and probably will be until January 20, 2021. And so, today/tonight I still pray for him.

But I am grateful to acknowledge the President-Elect of these United States for our not-too-distant future, the one who is slated to become our 46th President on January 20, 2021 – Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. And I am equally grateful to acknowledge the Vice-President-Elect of these United States, Kamala Devi Harris, a Black woman, yes, but more specifically, a child of immigrants from Jamaica and India.

I lift them to you in this writing to ask that you pray for this Presidential team (if I were in a Catholic Church, I would hear the priest pray this way: “We pray for our President-Elect, Joseph, and our Vice President-Elect, Kamala.”).

Pray that God will anoint them with the grace and gifts and discernment for the days and decisions ahead of them.

I also ask us as the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church to remember five things at this propitious time: 1-Remember and teach that every vote counts.

As “Election Day” became “Election Week,” some of us grew weary, waiting for the “official announcement.” Yet, I honestly became more and more grateful for the diligence and deliberateness of the process. I was grateful for secretaries of state and employees and volunteers of the offices in charge of counting ballots, and I was especially appreciative of John King of CNN who, after President Trump said, at about 3 in the morning of November 4th, that he Continued on next page December 2020 • The Christian Index

Connectional Interests Continued from previous page was “leading” in Pennsylvania and that no more votes needed to be counted, responded with something like this: “This is an election. We must count ballots.”

The process became long, yes, but the methodical ways in which each state counted its own ballots – for example, in one case, election day votes were counted first, absentee ballots second, military ballots and others from overseas third, and provisional ballots fourth – helped me hear that the intent was to make sure every ballot was counted. And now I have a new way of answering those who say, “My vote doesn’t count!” because this nation proved – in an election broadcast live for at least 5 days, that we are determined to count every vote.

2-Remember that our democracy cannot be taken for granted, nor does it work on auto pilot. We must take charge and help make it work.

Georgians, we applaud you. We applaud you for taking note in 2018, when now Governor Brian Kemp, who was then in charge of elections as secretary of state, purged voter rolls and did many other things most of us would call voter suppression during his campaign against Stacey Abrams. It was one thing to call it “Unfair!” or express our anger; it proved another when you as citizens responded by organizing, by mounting voter registration campaigns and informing citizens of your State about what was going on, and by preparing for the next election. You, Georgia, by getting involved and organized, turned red Georgia blue.

You should know, as CMEs, that one of the strongest leaders in Georgia is a member of the CME Church and a leader in both her local church and the Connection. She is Dr. Barbara C. Campbell, whose name you may recognize as the Connectional Laity Council President. She’s been a regular delegate to more than one Democratic National Convention and a leader in civic work in DeKalb County. Her local church is Shy Temple in Atlanta.

Others of us – across the nation in many states – worked the polls, helped get persons to the polls, organized, planned our work, and worked our plans.

You, too, are appreciated for the services you have rendered.

No, democracy does not operate on auto pilot. It demands attention, intentionality, and commitment to work it.

3-Remember Joseph Biden’s example: Be yourself. Be authentic.

Be the best you that you can be, and when your season comes, it will find you.

Joseph R. Biden, Jr., was a candidate for President in 1988 and in 2008.

In 1988, he lost the nomination to Michael Dukakis. In 2008, he lost the nomination to Barack Obama, but was tapped to become Vice President.

Still, the environment of 2019 and 2020 led the same political party that had declined him the nomination for President twice to tap him to be their party’s

nominee for 2020. People knew him. They knew his character. His record of faithfulness is long. His “season” found him.

4-Remember, too, these next four years, that there is a reason people turned to Donald Trump in 2016.

There was dancing in the streets of many cities when the announcement of Mr. Biden’s election was made on Saturday. People rejoiced! People jumped!

People shouted! I saw some cry. There was relief in the air!

But don’t forget that not everybody was relieved. Some were sad and disappointed.

Don’t forget that President Trump in the 2016 campaign paid attention to people who felt ignored and looked over - manufacturing workers, coal miners, rural farmers – persons who “felt” looked down upon, even as “deplorables.”

Don’t forget that we who are African Americans have also felt what they felt, that we also have felt overlooked, ignored, and maltreated. One irony of politics is that people continue to divide the very groups of people from each other whose similar circumstances would seem to call them together in unity for the whole.

But if we forget those 70 million persons who voted for President Trump and fail to hear their needs as well as our own, we forget them at our own peril.

5-Remember and act, because President-Elect Biden needs our prayers and supportive actions.

President-Elect Biden needs our prayers for his health and wisdom. He needs our actions as citizens to do the things that he brings to us as blueprints for a better nation (and those challenges we will hear no later than January 20, 2021), and he will need our “follow-ship” in these times of crises: an economic crisis in this recession; a health crisis in this pandemic; and a relationship crisis because of our divided nation.

I look forward to the next four years. I pledge to pray for President-Elect Biden and support his efforts for our nation … as much as I can. “To everything there is a season ….”

CHURCH IS WHERE WE GET WHAT WE CANNOT FIND IN THE WORLD The church is the storehouse of God's blessings.

In church, we encounter the power of gospel preaching (Romans 1:16; Hebrews 4:12). Church is where Christ's life-changing message is experienced in its optimal environment.

As live-streaming services has become common, some churches find online "attendance" surpassing in-person attendance. No longer does one have to leave home on Sunday. A living room becomes the auditorium; an easy chair, the pew; Facebook Live, the pulpit; a computer replaces congregational singing and fellowship.

Church attendance becomes just another app that allows one to "worship" in comfort and isolation.

Live-streaming is important for the homebound, for those looking for a new church, and as a study tool during the week, but it is not worship replacement. Watching a Livestream feed in our pajamas or a TV church service while eating a bowl of cereal is not the same as being there. Internet church is not really church. It does not offer the benefits of being with fellow worshipers in the presence of God. There are no interactions, no warm greetings and conversations, no voices blending in praise. Being together--with God and each other--is the whole point (Psalm 116:14). Christians are not to forsake the assembling of the church (Hebrews 10:25). Jesus said that "where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the mist of them" (Matthew 18:20). This requires close fellowship with real people (Acts 2:42).

Watching as a spectator is no substitute for participation as a worshiper.

Preaching is where God's power intersects with human hearts (Romans 1:16). Personal study is needed, but public teaching, encouragement, correction, and challenge are essential (2 Timothy 4:2). Worship nourishes the soul (Acts 20:32). One churchgoer wrote the following comment to a newspaper editor: "I've gone to church for 30 years. In that time, I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. For the life of me, I can't remember a single one. I'm wasting my time and preachers are wasting theirs." A weeks' long controversy followed, but one final letter to the editor ended it: "I've been married for thirty years. In that time my wife has cooked 32,000 meals. For the life of me. I cannot recall the entire menu of a single one.

I know this: Those meals nourished me and gave me the strength needed for my work. If she had not cooked, I would be physically dead. Likewise, if I had not gone to church, I would be spiritually dead."

In church, strong marriages and families are forged. Church completes the marital triangle of God, husband, and wife (Matthew 19:6). It reinforces the higher philosophy and purpose behind marriage (Genesis 2:18-24). It allows for deeper connection through shared beliefs (1 Peter 3:1-7) and gives constant motivation to be faithful and work on self improvement (1 Peter 2:11; Hebrews 13:4: Philippians 3:12). Church is where children learn to love God, their purpose, and healthy morality (Proverbs 22:6; Matthew 19:13-14).

In church, we discover, develop, and use our talents (1 Corinthians 12: Romans 12:4-8 and find opportunities to give back to others (Romans 1:14; Galatians 6:2). There are always people to help, teach, encourage, and cherish (Galatians 6:10). "The church really does not need me" is as untrue as "I don't really need the church" (Luke 10:2). They have programs that make it easy to get involved in helping others. It feels good to help people (Proverbs 22:9). Jesus promised a blessing for selfless service (Matthew 10:42).

In church, we connect socially with good people (cf. Romans 16:1-23). Humans are social creatures. All hunger for community and a sense of family. All need friendship and fellowship, godly mentors and good examples (Titus 2).

Four-of-ten people experience intense loneliness, yet many have not considered finding connection in church. About sixty-five percent of Americans identify as Christians but only forty-seven percent of those attend regularly.

Like grains of wheat coming together in life-giving bread, believers contribute to a healthy congregation.

The ground is level at the foot of the cross; there are no tiers or castes among those following the humble Nazarene.

In church, we find hope for this life and beyond. Everyone looks for a reason for hope and a sense of purpose. Jesus went to prepare a place for us (John 14:2).

What the church offers cannot be found anywhere else. Writing off the church is not the answer, so find a good local church. We happen to know one we would like to recommend.

“From Where I Sit …”

How “Safe” is the “Harbor”?

At the recent CME Presiding Elders’ ZOOM Retreat, I was invited to present on the Safe Harbor Option of the CME Retirement Plan. As I prepared, I remembered my December 2018 article entitled “Safe Harbor during the Trump Administration!” In that article, I explained that “the goal of Safe Harbor was to permit enrolled participants who had reached a certain age to shelter their invested accounts from significant losses due to market fluctuations.

As with other plans, I felt participants of a certain age should be able to choose a more conservative allocation for their investment account as they neared their retirement (especially mandatory retirement).”

Fully enrolled eligible participants in the CME Retirement Plan are automatically sent Safe Harbor Option forms in the Fall of the year after they turn 65. For 2020, forms were mailed October 29th with a required response date of November 20th. A form to cancel the Option was also included in the mailing with a required return date of December 15th. Those participants who choose to fully exercise the Option were reminded that (1) once in Safe Harbor their account must remain in Safe Harbor until they formally retire from the Plan and (2) at the effective date that the Safe Harbor option has been exercised, the participant’s current balance would be transferred to the Safe Harbor as would all future contributions.

Meanwhile, forms are sent annually until the participant fully exercises the Option or retires.

Although there is no guarantee of the level of Safe Harbor returns, since the inception of the Option, investment annuities have funded Safe Harbor commitments to further protect the account balances of “Harbor” participants and have steadily provided positive returns.

Finally, the decision to exercise the Safe Harbor Option should not be based solely on the fluctuations of the investment markets as has been seen over the past several years. Instead, a participant should consult with a financial advisor concerning the pros and cons of this step, its timing, and its potential impact, especially if the participant has other investments.

Let me close this article restating the final paragraph of my 2018 article, “No one can predict the markets and their eventual changes... Over the years there have certainly been enough changes (up and down) to cause any 65+ year old participant much concern.

However, the decision to exercise the Safe Harbor Option should not be decided “on the spur of the moment.” It should be well-planned and carefully thought-out, especially since it cannot be reversed after a certain period. I still believe this is an excellent option for our Plan and offers a tremendous benefit to our participants. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…”

Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business” Growing the Church During A Pandemic Through Radical Hospitality A couple of months ago we looked at prayer to lay the foundation for growing the church during a pandemic. In my last article, I suggested the pastor and laity develop technology teams. I would like us to now look at the effect of radical hospitality during the pandemic. Enough cannot be said about radical hospitality. The cliché “it’s nice to be nice” may not be a mantra for radical hospitality because it is much more than just being nice. Radical hospitality is a culture that is infectious and contagious. The pandemic has brought challenges but opportunities as well. However, opportunities for hospitality will not fall into our laps, we must look for and expect these opportunities.

How do we capture church growth during a pandemic through radical hospitality? We must get back to basics showing people that we care. Maya Angelou said, "People will forget what you said people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” The church must learn to speak with radical hospitality by giving people a sense of warmth and welcome.

This must be an intentional effort. Not only is it our responsibility, but Jesus showed radical hospitality in the Scriptures. Paul mentions in Romans 12:13, “when God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality”. The need for hospitality is real my Beloved, but it must be practiced. 1 Peter 4:9 says, “to offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

Church growth is a combination of many things. However, a church cannot grow if it does not have a sense of direction and practice radical hospitality. Whether you find yourselves in personto-person worship, Zoom worship, or streaming worship, within the contents of your church you can create a small hospitality team. It should be a team that can show the love of God in a real way. The team can be a part of the class leader system which is a great place to start. However, the vision of a hospitality team is singular focused. Therefore, it could get lost in the class leaders’ system if attention and oversight is not given.

One may even ask, “Where do we get all these people from for a prayer team, technology team, hospitality team, and follow up team?” I would offer this suggestion. Look at ways that your local church can partner with other CME Churches in the area. When the pastor and laity understand the mission of God and the mission of the church growth happens. This will truly be connectional if one church has a need that maybe other churches could offer help, hope, and assistance. Now that’s hospitality! If this pandemic has taught us anything at all it should have taught us that we’re better together.

As we prepare for the coming holidays, while continuing to struggle through one of the most challenging periods that anyone can remember, I am led to encourage us to stay faithful to the principles of tithing during this holiday season, - while in the heart of a raging pandemic. . .

Various events and circumstances sometimes challenge our ability to give, but our willingness, when tied to faith and commitment, will allow God to continue His work through us. So, I ask the question, how big is our faith and how strong is our commitment?

Colossians 2:6-7 reads thusly, (6) As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, (7) rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. The stewardship of tithing must develop into, and remain, a way of life that in itself requires faith and commitment which leads to voluntary, systematic contribution of financial support to the church; voluntary is giving out of love and gratitude for all God gives and provides for us.

Tithing may sometimes end with a public act, but it begins with a “personal act” of faith and commitment. . .

Pray for guidance and a firm commitment. As Laity, we must give personal thanks to God for all that He provides and seek prayerful guidance and strength in giving. Lack of faith to believe that God will sustain us and provide all our needs, can hinder one in making a firm commitment to becoming a tither.

We must stay strong when challenged and humble in success . . . As laity we must always remember that everything we earn, possess, and own belongs to God! Tithing is not something that one should do during times of prosperity and hold back during times of financial challenge. If one waits until financial concerns do not exist, blessings may be delayed and becoming a tither may soon be viewed as - adding to the problem rather than being a key to the solution!

Tithing should not hinge on whether one likes or dislikes the pastor, - rather true tithing should reflect one’s love for God and the church.

Rewards for tithing do not come from the compliments and accolades that may be showered on us by man, but satisfaction is found when we continuously live according to God’s word!

We must be good stewards of the 90% that remains after the tithe.

Don’t badger the non-tither but set a personal example of consistency and be quick to share a sincere and honest testimony about the results of your faithfulness.

In conclusion, as Laity, we must study with purpose and seek a deeper understanding of our responsibility, thus, broadening our resolve and commitment. The more we seek personal knowledge and understanding, the more we will find that “success will seek us out, and minister to us in every aspect of our lives.”

Paine College President Announces Partnership with Augusta National Golf Club On Friday, November 6, 2020, President Cheryl Evans Jones announced that Paine College and Augusta National Golf Club have entered a partnership that includes endowed scholarships named for Lee Elder, the first African American to compete in the Masters Tournament 45 years ago. The partnership will also fund the creation of a women's golf program at Paine College.

[In a November 9, 2020, article for The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Chris Vivlamore wrote: "Ridley revealed the creation of the Lee Elder Scholarships at Paine College, a Historically Black College and University located in Augusta. Two scholarships will be awarded annually, one each to a student athlete who competes on the men’s and women’s golf team. As part of this effort, Augusta National also will fund the creation of a women’s golf program at Paine College, which currently does not exist. Ridley said the club was not concerned with the expense of starting a women’s team. "'The courage and commitment of Lee Elder and other trailblazers like him inspired men and women of color to pursue their rightful opportunity to compete and follow their dreams. But in reality, that opportunity is still elusive for many. We have a long way to go, and we can and we must do more,'" Ridley said.]

Elder first competed in the Masters in 1975 and would later qualify for the Tournament for five consecutive years, 1977 through 1981. His best finish came in 1979, when he tied for 17th place.

Kohn, upon hearing the news, commented, "This collaboration is a positive step and will help to expand the Lion Athletics Program giving access to talented men and women a fair shot at the game of golf. MILES COLLEGE TEMPORARILY WAVES ACT/SAT SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS Miles College has decided to temporarily remove standardized test scores as a qualifying scholarship requirement for the 2021 – 2022 admissions cycle. Considering the challenges of navigating the admissions process in light of COVID-19, Miles College isadjusting its scholarship requirements for the 2021 academic school year.

Applicants will still be required to submit an official high school transcript and complete the admissions application to be considered for admission to the college. This temporary adjustment for scholarship consideration will be available to prospective students applying for admission for the 2021 spring and fall semester.

Prospective transfer students seeking admission to the college must submit transcripts from all previously enrolled institutions.

“Our primary focus as an institution of higher learning is to continue providing accessible and affordable educational opportunities while removing barriers from students seeking to achieve their educational goals,” said Michael Johnson, Vice President of Enrollment Management.

As an open-enrollment institution, Miles College does not require prospective students to submit standardized test scores to gain admissions to the college. Once a prospective student completes their admissions application and submits their transcripts from all previously enrolled institutions, they’re automatically considered for institutional scholarships.

Texas College Homecoming 2020 The Texas College National Alumni Association hosted "A Day to Give" on Friday, October 23, 2020, via Zoom. Though not Homecoming Convocation, the event served as a virtual platform to incorporate the gift presentation aspect of the traditional convocation.

As noted by Texas College National Alumni Association (TCNAA) President Gwendolyn Collins, “It’s still homecoming!” Though unable to physically gather this fall, resilience and optimism were on full display in the digital realm. With a myriad of Zoom links, social media posts, and more, Texas College celebrated Homecoming 2020 in a virtual landscape from October 22-24. Working closely with the Texas College National Alumni Association (TCNAA), the College and Association hosted a multitude of events for students, alumni, faculty, and staff to virtually celebrate.

MILES COLLEGE ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING FOR ITS STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER Miles College announced a grand opening for its Student Health and Wellness Center on Friday, October 16, 2020, at 12:00 PM/CST. The impact of COVID-19 has brought about an increase in the demand for testing and preventative medicine as well as wellness and mental health needs among college students. Miles College President Bobbie Knight and her administrative leadership team plan to expand access to health and wellness services to every student on the campus of Miles College.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the way we assess and address the wellness needs of our students,” said Bobbie Knight, Miles College President. “Our goal is to provide our students with resources and connect them early to licensed health service providers with hopes to shatter any stigma that may come with seeking them out.”

Miles College’s health and wellness center will be staffed with a doctor and nurse practitioner, and one mental health counselor. The center will also be a COVID-19 testing site for faculty, students, and staff.

CME-Affiliated Schools The Paine College Board of Trustees and Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, President, are pleased to announce that the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) has advanced Paine from Candidate Status to Accreditation Status. The TRACS Commission took action to affirm Paine College's accreditation at its October 27, 2020 meeting after careful review and consideration of evidence presented, including Institutional Effectiveness, academic programs, student services, faculty credentials, and finances.

TRACS is recognized by the United States Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). As a member of TRACS, Paine College is authorized to award Baccalaureate Degrees.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education announced that there would no longer be a distinction between "regional" and "national" accrediting agencies. All accrediting agencies will be viewed as institutional accrediting agencies. The U.S. Department of Education holds all accrediting agencies to the same standards.

President Jones commended the dedication of the Paine College TRACS team, faculty and staff who worked faithfully to advance the College through the process. "We have a dedicated and dynamic team who met and exceeded TRACS' accreditation standards".

President Jones further commented, "TRACS' decision to grant accreditation to Paine College is a testament to what we know to be true: Paine College is an extraordinary and exceptional institution doing extraordinary and exceptional work, changing lives for students, preparing them for service and leadership".

Submissions Another challenging issue for single pastors is worklife balance. In the church, work-life balance is often discussed within the context of marriage and family.

I used to think that because I wasn’t married and had kids, work-life balance didn’t apply to me. No one explicitly says you need to have a healthy work-life balance so that you can have healthy friendships. The truth is that work-life balance applies to everyone.

Just because I’m single doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t prioritize my friendships and self-care. I had to learn that it was okay to leave work at a normal hour to spend time with my family and friends, work out, or just do something for me.

Being a single pastor also makes have a dating life challenging. Dating within the church can be complicated, and everyone seems to know your business regardless of the size of your church. Even if you’re meeting people online or outside the church, I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to shut down a conversation with a potential interest is to tell him what you do for a living. I never had that problem of persons knocking down my door to take me out or even visit.

For some reason, church staffs tend to have a very high number of married people. Because of this, even simple staff gatherings and conversations can be a painful reminder of your singleness. It might be an invitation to attend a staff party with your spouse and you’re the only one who shows up alone because there wasn’t an opportunity to bring a date or friend.

Or it might be the constant reminder from coworkers to spend quality time with your family. One year, we were given staff Christmas gifts themed around spending time with your spouse and kids. It was a very thoughtful gift given with good intentions, but it was a painful reminder that I was once again alone for the holidays.

It can often seem as if the church places marriage above all other types of relationships. I believe marriage is a beautiful form of intimate relationship with another person, but to place it above all other relationships is problematic. There is beauty and joy to be found in relationships whether you’re single or married—and we miss out when we primarily focus on the marital relationships.

While there are a lot of challenges, there are also plenty of amazing experiences that come with this role. I am often entrusted with the stories of others who are in the same season of life as [I am]. They’re usually struggling with similar things, wondering how to be content, and wondering if they’ll ever feel complete without a spouse. It’s a joy for me to offer messages of hope and new ways of approaching their singleness.

My hope has been born out of the pain of being single and wanting something different. I have watched friend after friend find “the one.” Each time I wonder if it will ever be my turn, and I question whether I can stay content in a season of life I never expected to last this long. Through this journey, however, I’ve come to see that marriage isn’t the goal. God values inclusive community for all people—married, single, divorced, or widowed—and that’s what we’re working toward.

God created us as relational beings made for this beautiful community.

There was a time when I focused solely on what was missing from my life: a spouse. After a lot of prayer, therapy, and self-reflection, I realized that I was missing out on the beauty of all the different relationships that I already had in my life. I may not be a wife, but I am a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, mentor, and pastor. I made a choice to invest deeply in these relationships and create a chosen family, a group of people that are committed to doing life with me for the long haul. Today, I have an amazing community made up of single people, married couples, and parents from different backgrounds, classes, and cultures. I cannot imagine doing life without them. We navigate big decisions together, babysit each other’s kids, talk about the challenges of being single and married, vacation together, and cook meals together. They challenge me, support me, care for me, pray with me, and, most importantly, love me unconditionally. They are my family, and if I meet the man of my dreams tomorrow my family will continue to grow.

That is the beauty of the church. We are called to be a loving, supportive community for all people. Within the body of Christ, no one should feel like a secondclass citizen because of their marital status. While I Continued on next page December 2020 • The Christian Index

Submissions Continued from previous page still wrestle with my singleness, I am committed to creating space in our community to discuss these issues. I’ve been given the gift of seeing how the church can unintentionally harm people in this season of life and how marriage can be the default perspective for many church leaders. Because God has allowed me to see this, I am able to share my perspective and help others see God and the value of community in new ways. God does not discriminate with his love, and he desires for us all to experience that love to the full, regardless of our marital status.

As single pastors, we get to wrestle with and model this truth. We have an opportunity to ask ourselves: How can we challenge our small-group members, both married and single, to expand their view of community? How are we helping single people invest in building well-rounded community that encourages them to grow and experience the love of God in tangible ways? How are we talking about relationships in holistic ways, rather than just from the perspective of marriage?

We should celebrate our singleness just as married pastors celebrate their marriages. We should tell the real stories of pain, joy, and celebration because, I promise you, there are others in your congregation who need to hear they’re not alone, they belong, and their story matters.

There is beauty in the stories and experiences of single people. We need to elevate those stories to combat the shame often associated with this season of life. The church needs the voices of single people in order to be at its best and experience God more fully. The New Testament is full of single people experiencing radical community, living full lives and changing the world. Why should our churches be any different?

It takes strength, vulnerability, and courage to share this part of our lives because there’s still some shame attached to being single. This is the reason I believe we need more leaders who are willing to show up, embrace their singleness, and share how the love of the Father and transformative community can 22

remind us everyday that we are whole, valuable, and beautiful in the sight of God just as we are. So here I am from the call to the cloth and am striving on to perfection with the power and strength of God with me. I have learned on this journey I am not alone.

I never wanted to be a single mom. I never wanted to raise my five sons and one daughter alone. I didn’t think I could do it, physically, emotionally, or financially. As I reflect back on that time twenty plus years later, I am grateful for that darkness for two reasons. First, I know now that God never left me, and second, it was during this visit, this escape from my years of domestic violence trying to be the good submissive wife, perfect mother, and perfect Christian that I realized I was being controlled by my spouse.

How can I be a pastor who is a divorced single mom?

I remember my dad telling me something along the lines of, “Don’t forget what your identity in Christ is, not your married identity, not your mother identity, who You are in Christ.” And I began to unravel all the trauma of the emotional and spiritual abuse. I was so lost I remember just opening up the Bible and reading whatever it plopped open to (you know you’ve done this before). It plopped open to Joshua… and I read the story of Rahab (Joshua chapter 2). Rahab the harlot who is in the lineage of Jesus. Rahab was used by God for her faithfulness to God’s people. In other words, God used a harlot to help God’s people to safety while on their journey to the Promised Land. Yup. In my dark, possibly my darkest time, The Holy Spirit (He knows what we need when we need it) led me to read the story of Rahab. It was then that I knew what I was supposed to do. If God used Rahab with her background, and Rahab is in the lineage of Jesus, then there was no doubt that God could use me, even with the labels of divorced, single-mother. That brief moment of quiet time sparked hope deep inside my soul. And even though that Christmas I walked away with the most precious gifts that I could receive, my children and safety, we left just with the clothes on our back.

Walking not looking back at the things that were behind us. It wasn’t particularly happy or joyful, but I was also gifted with this little spark of hope and knew that somehow my messed up, chaotic life would still be used for God’s glory.

Submissions I know there are people reading this who are on the verge of relationships falling apart, perhaps divorce, perhaps some sort of scandal, perhaps facing becoming a single parent, and that this can feel overwhelming.

I know that finding JOY in this season is way too hard. It’s okay to sit with darkness. God never leaves us no matter how dark it gets. I am not saying my thirty minutes of scripture reading about Rahab solved all my problems and all my darkness went away. Divorce, moving back in with my parent, being a single mother and years of pastoral ministry [have brought] all sorts of dark, twisty roads. What I’m trying to say is that light may feel far, far away and that’s ok.

What I long for you to cling to is that many, many years ago God knew all of the heartache and darkness of humanity on earth and sent God’s self to earth in the form of a little baby to a mother and father whose lives were turned upside down. And maybe at one point in time, as parents, they too had times of darkness. With all of whatever darkness or chaos is going on in your life right now, how ever far away joy may feel, what I want you to know is that God still wants you. God sees your heart, knows your pain, is there with you in your darkness, and loves you, unconditionally. And my prayer is that somehow the Holy Spirit will give you a tiny piece of hope that will rest deep inside your soul. I pray that little piece of hope, whatever it is, will grow and well up inside of you until you’re ready to lean into it and perhaps let it break through a bit of the darkness.

Today. My children are all married and grown, with children. I have more than enough, and I am enough. Be Blessed!

Greenville/Texarkana Region Holds Virtual Planning Meeting Submitted by Sis. Geraline Ray, Reporter

On August 29, 2020, we, the Greenville/Texarkana District of the Mighty Eighth Episcopal District experienced our first virtual planning meeting via YouTube and Facebook Live after having had several planning meetings to set up “The Planning Meeting.”

Elder Diana Casteel opened the meeting with these words: “We not only see the need; we fill the need as related to our motto: ‘Don’t talk about it; be about it!’

There’s something wrong when a dog has more privilege than our black and brown brothers!” (This was after the unfathomable killing of George Floyd when an armed officer leaned his knee on the back of the brother’s neck until he was asphyxiated.) She then added, “It is (our) prayer that God will bless and keep you in these times that we are living in.”

Rev. Dr. Kai Horn, our Regional Director of the Christian Board of Education and Pastor of Hopewell Temple CME Church, Texarkana, sang “Reign of Heaven” as she accompanied herself on the organ from her site.

Rev. Keith Thomas, new pastor to Bethel CME Church in Neylandville, Texas, gave us our meditation addressing Isaiah 43:19. His theme was, “Whose Work Are You Watching?”

Rev. Thomas began, “Many of us see a lot of things, but we must learn to focus on the right thing. His points were:

Focus and verify the right “who” and the right “what.”

2.

Just let it go.

3.

If God says He will, He has already begun.

For some of our Christian brothers and sisters, it appears that God is letting the world suffer so much. He is getting the blame, he said.

Some of us claim too much self-righteousness. Some think God is doing this to punish us.

Learn to focus on God in your situation. 1 John 4:8 and Ephesians 2:4 support why God is not doing this to whip us. Focus on the good stuff. Focus on John 10:3.” He reminded us that we can’t take one time and put it in another, for instance, 1930 for 2020.

After Rev. Thomas’ spot-on mediation, Rev. Ninevah Franklin invited us to Christian Discipleship and, hence, reminded us that we cannot forsake the assemblage of the church. We can call our pastors and tell them we want to change and be a part of what is currently going on.

The Ministry of Finance was invoked and, yes, we are still able to lift offerings through Givelify, $Cash App, and/or mail it in.

The main Word was presented by Rev. Sheila Willis Timberlake, LPC, of Bethel CME Church in Beckville, Texas, who preached her first sermon at the age of seventeen years. She has presently served God for eleven years.

Rev. Timberlake prefaced her message by saying, “Before God can do a new thing with you, He has to do a new thing in you.” (The theme for the Greenville/Texarkana District is, “For I am about to do a new thing. Isaiah 43:19”)

She added, “It is vitally important that we protect our mental and spiritual health. Even in the midst of this (pandemic), we can make it through our stress. Our spiritual practice can help us, but we must set time aside for God. 26

Prayer is our number one thing: Purpose driven prayer, specific prayer. Continue to be grateful to God Invite others into prayer with you.

Take care of yourself mentally. Limit the bad news you take in. We listen to too much negativity. Keep up your normal routines. Get outside and get some sunshine.

Stay in touch with the people you love. Mental illness is real! This is not the time to put the wrong things in your body or mind. Keep moving and be mindful of your energy level.

Stay in a mindset of gratitude. Ask God what His challenge is for you. God is not silent, but you have to be in tune with Him. It is about getting connected with Him.

To keep our sanity, we have to keep our mind set on God. The things we used to da are not going to work right now. It’s time for the new things to spring up in a “new thing”.

Stop looking behind and start looking ahead! Stay focused on God! Clarify your focus! None of the things happening are a surprise to God. Be certain that you focus on what God has given to you.

Every congregation is different as God has a plan carved out tor each. God is number one. You cannot serve people in the spirit if you are broken down in your spirit. The “new thing” God is doing is to glorify Him through you.”

The Greenville/Texarkana District planned a three-night revival October 7th-9th, nightly at 7:30 p.m.

Jacobs Chapel, Talladega, Celebrates Virtual Laity Day Submitted by Rev. Jerrell C. Hicks, Pastor

Jacobs Chapel CME Church celebrated Connectional Laity Day virtually on October 18, 2020, on Facebook Live.

The guest speaker was Minister Walter Prater, a member of Mt. Pleasant CME Church in Piedmont, where the Rev. Dr. K. Solomon Williams is pastor. The theme of his challenging message was, "Reaching, teaching, and ministering to all generations, equipping them for greater works and service." His subtopic was, "A Call to Action in a Pandemic World," with text Mark 1:16-20.

Prater was born and reared in Piedmont. He attended Bethune School and Gadsden State Commu­nity College. He is married to the Rev. Debra Prater, and they are the proud parents of four children and are lov­ing grandparents. Prater officially acknowledged his call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 2017 and is truly a vessel that God is using in the CME Church to proclaim that Jesus is the answer.

Prater is currently serving as the Anniston District Lay Leader and Dis­trict Sunday school Superintendent. He is also the Vice Lay (l-r): Minister Walter Prater, Rev. Debra Prater, and Leader of the Birmingham Region.

Pine Hill Forms Partnership to Distribute Food Submitted by Pastor Samuel McKinsey

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Over 28,000 pounds of food was distributed in the month of September in the Haynesville/Homer, Louisiana, area. What a year 2020 has been: COVID, racial injustice, political turmoil, protests, floods, forest fires, tornados, and hurricanes. It seems that bad things are trying to compound, and yet we see God working in the midst. God is working through his church, although the doors to the buildings are closed. He is working through his people, although we are masked and socially distanced.

The times have created needs, and God is using his people to fill those needs. Yes! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Pine Hill CME partnered with Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana to provide food assistance for a largely rural parish in northwest Louisiana. The mission of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana is to serve as the primary resource for fighting hunger in [this geographical region]. Their ultimate vision is to end hunger in Northwest Louisiana by [forming of a] consolidated network of effective food collection and distribution which will provide universal access to food for the needy in our communities. The food distribution followed the heels of Hurricane Laura that left some people in the area without power for more than four days. Hurricane Laura, combined with the effects of COVID, created a need in the community that Pine Hill CME could not meet alone.

Pine Hill CME partnered not only with Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, but also with a sister church located 5 miles north. We needed help with distributing and called Dolly Chapel CME, pastored by Rev. Diana Roberison, for help. Dolly Chapel, with a spirit of cooperation, showed up in a big way to fill the manpower need that Pine Hill alone could not fill. Together, we distributed 14 tons of food to 257 households. Dolly Chapel’s support was not a surprise because the Pastor and congregation have demonstrated a heart for serving the community. Additionally, a number of volunteers served who were not affiliated with either church, and a few even drove greater than 150 miles to provide support. How true it is that, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIV). We can do so much more working together than we can working alone. May God bless all the contributors for their efforts in making the food distributions a success.

Servant Leadership During COVID 19 Pandemic Beebe Memorial CME Collaborates with National Action Network & World Central Kitchen Submitted by Calandra Foster Hunter

Since August 6th, 2020, under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Reverend Dr. Charley Hames Jr., Beebe Memorial CME Cathedral (BMC) in connection with National Action Network (NAN) and World Central Kitchen (WCK) has been providing 400 pre-packaged meals weekly to the Oakland community.

WCK is an organization that is working around America to provide fresh meals to communities in need, working with local chefs to provide meals to the needy while also supporting a restaurant industry [in need of] community support due to the significant impact of COVID-19 to their businesses. Food distributions at BMC have occurred weekly, providing over 2000 pounds of food to date. Due to this partnership, BMC has fed over 2000 people in the Bay Area. As a result of our impact, we will be feeding more families for the remainder of 2020.

Members of the BMC Congregation come out weekly to ensure this is a successful event. It is very uplifting to be able to be a blessing to those families in need during such difficult and trying times. In Dr. Hames words, “A church of significance is about serving people. This was our moment to make our church matter to our community!” The pandemic has caused many people to go week after week not knowing when they might eat and if they will have a safe and secure place to sleep. Thus, it was a humbling experience to see the sigh of relief on so many faces, and the genuine sense of gratification left a lasting impression in all of the volunteers involved.

BMC is known as the premier house of worship in the Bay Area, and to be able to bless our community with meals just adds to how we are always looking for ways to give back to the community who has blessed us so much. This partnership is one that the BMC family is grateful for and looks to continue in the near future.

WE ARE ONE PEOPLE

“Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one, all things in Christ both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him” (Eph. 1:9-10).

The Bible has been described in millions of ways by the millions of people who have gotten the opportunity to read and study its contents. Some see the Bible as a book of moral instructions for a better relationship with fellow men. To others, it is the compass of man from his origin to his final destination. To others still it is a mere religious myth and dogmas of the Jewish people. However, to the Christian, the bible is the book of the origin and the end of everything and the mirror in which we see God, measure our standing in God and judge our actions against our fellow man. Thus, being the book that gives us the full knowledge of God, who man is, and the origin and the end of everything, it becomes pertinent to ask or find out what is the main duty of man in God’s plans to redeem man and the earth back to himself. Understanding this fundamental question is very important for all people, especially, the black race, which was the first to live on earth, for Moses told the Jews: “Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generation: ask thy father, and he will show you; thy elders, and they will tell you”: when the Most High divided their inheritance to the Nations, when he separated the sons of Adam he set the boundaries of the people according to the number of the children of Israel (Dt. 32:7-8) This is part of the problems of the world today. In other words, the world is groping in darkness (false religion/ deception, war, etc) today because, the people of the world, especially, the children of Japheth (Caucasians), have refused to ask the father and elder of humanity (the black race) about the past. Until the world asks the black race about the past, the world will continue to grope in darkness. Until the Christian world asks the black race about the original Christianity, which they started at Antioch before taking it to Europe, falsehood will continue to be the embodiment of the Christianity preached today. Thus, there is no better way to discover our past as humanity than to go to the first man, Adam: (i) whose name means taken from the black soil, and (ii) whose country home spanned from Ethiopia in the south of Canaan to Mesopotamia in the North (Gen. 2:8-14). It was here that Adam and the people of his generation lived as one black people for 1656 years before they were all destroyed by the flood. The life and times of Adam and his world are carefully preserved for us in writing in Gen. 2:7-7:11 and is verifiable for all.

Again, at the end of the flood, Noah and his family found themselves in the mountains of Ararat in Armenia in Europe. Surprisingly, instead of them beginning their new life in Europe where the waters of the flood had landed them, they trekked back to their country home, or Africa, to begin afresh (Gen. 11:2). The three sons of Noah had 16 sons and the name of one of them was Cush (black), which once again shows that the three surviving children of Noah begot children after their kind - blacks. It means, again, that after the flood, the people of our world started out

Submissions Continued from previous page in Africa, as one united black people, speaking one language and sharing one destiny as children of one father until the year Noah got drunk and was mocked by his third son, Ham, forcing Noah to make his racial pronouncement that became the foundation of racial activities in our world today (Gen. 9:20-27).

The bad blood that arose after the racial pronouncement made the three brothers, especially the children of Ham, to begin to mind only the things that elevated and bettered the greatness of the children of Ham. The children of Ham became rebellious and disobedient not only to Noah’s leadership but that of God. They became oppressive of the children of Japheth and Shem, not allowing them to build in the old home of Adam – from Ethiopia to Mesopotamia. They made Nimrod, their brother, the first Emperor of the world and Nimrod ruled from Ethiopia, his native home, to Mesopotamia, making Babylon his capital. He subdued the children of Japheth and Shem, making them uncomfortable to live in the old home of Adam, which they had claimed as theirs - “The Land of Ham” (1 Chr. 4:40) which was finally given to them by God (Gen.10: 6-20.) He introduced idol worship and forced all to not worship God, but idols, in rebellion to Noah’s racial pronouncement that the leadership of the world would be taken away from the children of Ham (Gen. 9: 25). Thus, as the prophecy of Noah was temporarily unfulfilled concerning the children of Ham and Nimrod became the first Emperor of the world, the children of Ham disdained Noah and his God. As Nimrod ordered the building of the Tower of Babel, the symbol of unity in rebellion against God, the Lord came down to scatter them, starting with giving humanity multi-languages, multi-races, and living in a divided world (continents) with different cultures, so as not to imagine things the same way again (Gen. 11:3-9).

That way, the one world government of Emperor Nimrod was brought to an end in 2217 B.C. That was some 100 years after the flood, in the year Peleg was born and the earth divided into continents (Gen. 10:25). Therefore, from Adam to the scattering of men out of Africa and to the division of the earth into continents in 2217 BC, humanity had lived only in Africa as one black people for 1787 years. So, the children of Japheth and Shem who went out of Africa at the scattering to people the rest of the world were blacks. Among such people who went out of the land of Ham to establish their nation was Asshur (Gen.10:11-12).

Now look at how simply and poetically the Bible records that it was one race of people that God divided and scattered to live in all nations of the earth.

Submissions “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Act 17:26).

Thus, whether you are black, white or whatever color you have today, we are one people, historically, scientifically and biblically. Again, it is clear so far that from the beginning, humanity did not start out as multi-races but one black race, which means it was not the plan of God from the beginning for humanity to be divided. For this reason, it is in God’s plan to return humanity once again to the one black race that we were from the beginning. In God’s plan, that time is known as, “The times of Restitution of all things,” when God shall send Jesus to come and remove everything that divides and disunites us (Acts 3:20-24). Remember, Jesus is the second Adam and the inheritor of the Mountains (Land of Adam, from Ethiopia to Mesopotamia) of God (Isa. 65:9-10).

Surely, Jesus is coming to remove everything that divides us from being the one people God created us to be including the Seas that divide the earth into continents. He shall restore us to our original oneness and an earth where there is no more curse and Seas. In other words, the curse of (Gen. 3:14); racism, division and inequalities among men (Gen. 9:24-27); the Seas that divide the earth (Gen. 10:25) shall all be no more (Rev. 21:1; 22: 23). The rebellion against God, which the children of Ham started against God in the land of Ham, shall be removed, and humanity shall serve God in one united voice in the language of Canaan as it was before the division (Isa. 19:1, 18, 23-25; Rom. 12:5; Gal. 3:28).

Dake explains that the word, translated ‘restitution’ in Greek is: “apokatastasis” and means, “a complete restoration or reestablishment”. It refers to the millennium, when Christ will reign 1,000 years for the purpose of gathering together all [things] in one as before the fall (Eph. 1:10); of ridding the earth of all rebellion (1 Cor. 15:24-28), of making the new heavens and the new earth, and of restoring all things to perfection and sinlesness as before the rebellion of Lucifer and Adam (Isa. 65:17; 66:22-24; II Pet. 3:5-13; Rev. 21:22). When this complete restoration work is finished, then the son will deliver the restored and perfect kingdom to the father so that he may be all and all as before rebellion” (Note “e” of Acts 3:21).

In other words, when Christ would have finished the restitution of all things, or, when races, multi-languages, continents and inequalities (the former things) have passed away (Rev. 21:4); then, on earth it will only be Christ, God and man - the Black man. That will be a situation where nations shall no more rule over one another, for God shall be all in all on the earth; and man, one in God, speaking the original language of Canaan, and doing things in oneness.

The Mission After the Meeting Submitted by Phyliss M. Spragin It was a cold December day in Jackson, Tennessee, when forty-one ex-slaves started out on a new adventure.

It was during Advent that this adventure began. The mission was the same that Jesus had given his disciples in MATTHEW 28:18-20 when he said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

Those men set out and founded the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. One hundred and fifty years later, lo, he has been with us alway. Bishops, pastors, elders, presiding elders, ministers, laity, missionaries, have traveled the highways and byways, front roads and back roads, by foot, by horse, by carriage, by car, by train, by plane, from sea to shining sea and across the seas, spreading the good news of the Gospel. The name of the Church was later changed to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, but the mission remained and remains the same.

The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has been a carrier – like UPS, FedEx, USPS – of the greatest gift the world could receive, Jesus. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Celebrating the coming of Jesus into the world, we as Christians prepare and remember the true meaning of Christmas. Advent is “Coming” in Latin. Jesus came and Jesus is coming back. For one hundred and fifty years we have been faithful to the mission to go ye therefore. Let us continue to tell the world.

A Theological Framing

The Second Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is an intricate and dynamic part of our great Zion. In light of such historical contexts as institutional slavery, reconstruction, the great migrations, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement and more recently, the rise in racial tension and an increase of genocidal police brutality against Black men and women, this particular part of the country (Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio) has always been a theological hotbed for effective pulpit preaching, social action and racial pride, and at the forefront of and geographically ensconced in the human struggle of being Black and Christian in the United States. In borrowing from the integrating theologian and Black mystic, Howard Thurman, the African-American religious experience represents the difference between life and death among slaves and free Black men and women. Born out of institutional slavery and born into institutional racism and generational poverty, the CME Church has been the cultural and religious bridge between human oppression and spiritual liberation.

Especially in the geographical areas that make up the Second Episcopal District, the CME Church has been the revolutionary voice of ecclesial reasoning and Black existential freedom. Addressing the social, political and economic needs of Black people, our denominational outreaches gave visual and sacrificial credence to the fact that God had called and chosen the CME Church to be both an active agent of social change and a contributing part of the Body of Jesus Christ. The Second Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is an intricate and dynamic part of the history and culture of

our great Zion, and an important part of the entire history of Christian experience.

The Kentucky Region is the older of two in this District, and the Spirit of the Kentucky Region Conference of the Colored, now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is the Holy Spirit. Our embracing of the Holy Spirit's directional (Actsian) indwelling is not religious. Rather it is a spiritual endeavor. It is one that has been tested, tried and nurtured in the crucible of Christian hope and cultural uncertainty. The CME Church in the state of Kentucky is a most tender plant of God, which means we are a tender group of believing people who continue to hold up the bloodstained banner in trying our very best to be faithful to our tender church. We are not tender as in the lack of strength, sturdiness and texture (for Jesus Christ is the solid rock on which we stand) but tender in both our ecclesial stability and our financial transparency.

We have the Spirit of the living God in all of our churches; we just do not have the growing memberships and the economic wherewithal to help undergird the rural towns in which many of our churches are located. I say again that the CME churches in the State of Kentucky are a tender plant of God. The State of Kentucky is a Jim Crow state. We are actually a commonwealth — a place where the wealth is not common. But what is common among the CME churches in Kentucky is that we are led and guided by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are a deeply-spiritual people—a people who understand the importance of having an authentic relationship with our Creator God. We believe that it is the Holy Spirit who makes us holy in that the Holy Spirit gives life to dead situations and comes to those who believe. Put simply, the CME churches in the state of Kentucky have thrived and survived by the grace of God. We are very much aware of the biblical fact that the grace of God is the work of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit has been our teacher for over 150 years.

While CMEs in the state of Kentucky cannot boast of having one of the illustrious Christian Methodist Episcopal Church schools within their geographical boundaries at their educational disposal, we can claim Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (LPTS) in Louisville as our home theological seminary. Don't get it twisted. Louisville Seminary is not the Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center or Miles College or Lane College or Paine College or even Texas College by way of the fact that LPTS is not a historical Black college and university. Submissions Continued from previous page to how CMEs in Kentucky have embraced the Spirit in their own theological contexts, the fact remains that some of our greatest leaders have matriculated in and out of what many refer to as the best and most complete theological seminary in the state of Kentucky. Bishop Teresa O. Snorton, Presiding Elder Delmetria Cayson, Rev Drs Amariah McIntosh and Franklin M. Easterly (late), Revs Carston A. Shanklin (late), Denise OwensDavis (late), Claudette Snorton, Bruce W. Burns, and myself, Dr. Darvin A. Adams—we have all made our developmental way to 1044 Alta Vista Road in the heart of East Louisville with hopes of pursuing a greater theological education. It is in sensational moments of spiritual ecstasy that I can hear Presiding Elder Charles K. Henry enthusiastically proclaim that the Church needs both education and the Holy Ghost.

A Historical Analysis

According to the history of the CME Church, Northern California, Georgia and Texas are the only two states where the entire episcopal district is geographically placed within the boundaries of the primary state. On the other hand, Tennessee, Kentucky (not including the Cleaves Memorial CME Church in Evansville, Indiana), Alabama, Northern California and Southern California are the only states that encompass an entire Region Conference as an integral part of their respective episcopal districts. The CME Church in the state of Kentucky has been in elite company for a long time.

This is something that CMEs in the state of Kentucky should be proud of. Even though the CMEs in the state of Kentucky were not yet organized and recognized at the birthing moment of the Church, we were present with the other founding leaders. Of the 41 original members of those who composed the Organizing General Conference of the CME Church, six of them hailed from Kentucky.

Their names were William H. Miles, P. Bell, W. P. Churchill, James Graves, Richard Marshall and William Watson.1 As good CMEs and Colored Kentuckians, let us not forget that [of these,] the first Bishop of the CME Church, William Henry Miles, was born and raised in Kentucky. He was elected in Jackson, Tennessee. Bishop Miles died in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 64.

Let us not forget that the Kentucky Colored Conference was the 2nd annual conference and the first state/commonwealth to be formally organized within the CME Church structure for the former slave members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Even though establishing the work among Colored Methodists in 36

Kentucky encountered more opposition than in most areas, as a border state, Kentucky was exposed to the missionary efforts of the Northern Methodist bodies earlier and more persistently than some of the other areas.2 According to fellow Kentuckian and one of the first General Secretaries of the CME church, Rev. Thomas H. Copeland, "The state lines of Kentucky constituted the boundaries of the Kentucky Conference of the CME Church from the time the Kentucky Colored Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, was organized in 1868 until the General Conference of 1902 divided the state into the West Kentucky Conference and the Kentucky and Ohio Conference."3 In 1978 Kentucky native James Lee Cummings was elected the 40th Bishop of the CME Church in Birmingham, Alabama. As we dig deeper into the rich heritage of the CME Church, we find that history was made yet again in 2010 as Kentucky-born Teresa O. Snorton was elected the 59th Bishop of the Church. Here the historical note encapsulates the fact that Bishop Snorton was elected the first female bishop in the history of Christian Methodism. Again, the CME Church in the state of Kentucky has much to be proud of.

The historical analysis does not end with the election of CME bishops who were born and raised in the state of Kentucky. In 1907 the West Chestnut Street CME Church was purchased under the leadership of Reverend L.H. Brown. In 1954 the name was changed to Brown Memorial. Brown Memorial is the oldest and most accomplished CME Church in the state of Kentucky.

Even though Bishop C. James King Jr. was not born in Kentucky, his greatest years of pastoral leadership took place at the Brown Memorial Church in Louisville. In 1917, Reverend “Mrs” Nellie B. Jackson organized the Greater St. James CME Church in Winchester, Kentucky.

She was the first woman preacher to organize a CME Church. The 1930 General Conference was held at the “West Chestnut Street CME Church” in Louisville, Kentucky.4 The 1994 National Youth and Young Adult Conference was also held in Louisville, Kentucky. Keas Tabernacle CME Church in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, is one of the many churches that Bishop Miles visited during his episcopal leadership tenure. The pulpit he preached from is still present in the Keas Tabernacle sanctuary.

Over the years, the CME Church in the state of Kentucky has born witness to some of the most outstanding pastors in our Connectional Church. Some names that come to mind are Revs Roscoe Mason (late), Della Porter, Don Johnson (late), Rod Thompson (late).

Presiding Elders Charles K. Henry Sr., Roy K. Reid (late), James A. Buckner (late) and past General Secretary of Evangelism and Gospel Rap Artist Rev. Dewayne Golightly. I am sure there are many more great preachers

Submissions and pastors that I did not mention. However, three out of the eight total churches I have served: my home church, Freeman Chapel CME in Hopkinsville (155 years old); Thomas Chapel CME in Hickman (155 years old); and Saint James CME in Paducah (161 years old) are all older than the CME Church denomination. Along with the historic Brown Memorial Church, these three churches have celebrated their 150th Church Anniversary.

The church that I currently pastor, Lane Tabernacle CME in Hopkinsville, is named after Bishop Isaac Lane, the 5th elected bishop of the Colored, now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. I recently found out that Spillman Chapel CME Church in Princeton, Kentucky is 149 years old as of this present moment.

I am a sixth-generation member of the CME Church.

My family's business, Adams & Sons Mortuary in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, has funeralized such giants of the Church as Bishop Luther Stewart, Presiding Elder John L. Glenn, and Carol S. Glenn, the daughter of Bishop B. Julian Smith (late).

A Final Word

Down through the bumpy course of 150 plus years, the Lord has been good to the CME Church in the state of Kentucky, for we are a most tender plant of our Creator God. Our legaciack place in the history of the Colored, now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church stands on a strong foundation. As a trained theologian of the Black Church in the modern context, I think that the most perplexing part of this particular analysis is that the history of the CME Church, especially where the Commonwealth of Kentucky is concerned, tells the liberating story of how the presence of the Spirit of the living God inspired an oppressed group of believers to positive action. Let us not fool ourselves. Black people residing in the United States of America are still oppressed socially, politically, economically and educationally. But the Lord is with us, working on the side of the oppressed.

Again, considering the cultural relevance and spiritual heritage of Kentucky's place in CME Church history, it should prick our collective consciences to the supernumerated fact that one of the most historic areas of our Connectional church has been on a painful and steady decline. As one who does theology from the ground up, it seems to me that we have suffered greatly from the overwhelming combination of increasing budgets and a decreasing psychological morale as seen in the declining memberships and ministries of the local church. Even more noticeable is the fact that the Kentucky Region Conference has only one real metropolitan city in

Louisville; and a number of low- to medium- sized towns and cities in Lexington, Hopkinsville, Mount Sterling, Paducah and Evansville, Indiana. Outside of Louisville, none of these local economies has prospered in such a way that has allowed for a particular type of economic growth within our local churches. It takes financial resources within the local church structure to do effective ministry beyond the local church building. Outside of those episcopal districts that comprise the continent of Africa, the Evansville-Hopkinsville District within the Kentucky Region Conference could very well be the poorest district in the Connectional CME Church. The state of Kentucky could very well be the poorest region conference in the Connectional CME church.

As we inch closer to the full bloom of the Connectional CME Church's Sesquicentennial celebration, it is my prayer that we continue to take our church's history seriously and move forward in the grace of God. CME churches in the state of Kentucky, and other states as well, are going through a very difficult time with the Coronavirus-19 pandemic. Ironically, many CME churches were struggling before this deadly pandemic touched down into their existential context.

Once again, the CME Connectional Church must respond faithfully, theologically, economically, legislatively and budgetarily to the loud cries and painful pleas of our local churches. Through the faithfulness of God and human beings, history tells us that the CME Church in the state of Kentucky has responded to the trials and tribulations that are associated with being Black and Christian in the United States.

These are just a few theological snapshots of the history of the Christian Methodism in Kentucky. This is our history. It is a rich and glorious history. We are extremely proud of what God has done, is doing and will do in the life of those who believe. God Matters. All Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter. The CME Church Matters in that our illustrious leader, Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas Sr, has been with us since his ascension to the episcopacy in 2014. In the historical understanding that the CME Church in the state of Kentucky is a most tender plant of God, Bishop Thomas has fully embraced the Spirit of Kentucky. His visionary leadership has guided us through some difficult moments. In the spirit of the late Kentucky Region Conference musician, Rev. Rod Thompson, we would like to take this time TO RECOMMEND YOU ALL TO THE LORD (Jesus Christ). Hence, it is with great honor and pride that we say Happy 150th Birthday to the CME Church!!!!! Here's to another 150 years of holistic excellence in the fields of church ministry and community transformation.

CME Centenarian Helen Bookman Votes in Historic 2020 Presidential Election Submitted by Rev. Jacqueline Nance Cockerham Lake Mary, Florida

On November 3, 2020, 100-year-old Helen Bookman, cast her vote for the 2020 Presidential Election in Tahoka, Texas, being the oldest to vote in the Lynn County elections. [At the time, she was] less than one month from turning 101 (on December 1st).

Mrs. Bookman is the mother of the late Presiding Elder Andrew Nance of the Northwest Texas Region (now merged into the Dallas-Fort Worth/Northwest Texas District), serving all of the churches in that Northwest Texas Region on both districts at the time.

Mrs. Helen Bookman is a long-time member of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for over 70 years, (Wesley Chapel CME Church-Tahoka, TX).

She has three grandchildren, three great-grandsons, one great-great-grandson, and is the mother-in-law of Mrs. Bennie Nance (wife of the late Presiding Elder Andrew Nance) of the Northwest District. One grandchild, the Reverend Jacqueline Nance Cockerham, is pastor of New Mount Zion CME Church, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She says, “To God be the glory for a Blessed Life!

Obituaries

Joining the Great Cloud

Rev. James A. Hazel

James Andrew Hazel was born May 14, 1937, in Dougherty County, Georgia, the fourth child of the late Mr. D.C. Hazel, Sr. and the late Mrs. Lucy Johnson Hazel.

James was educated in the public schools of Dougherty County, graduating from Monroe High School in 1956. After graduation, he briefly attended Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, and returned home to complete his undergraduate studies at Albany State College (now Albany State University). He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1963. James attended Phillips School of Theology, receiving a certificate in Old Testament studies in 1965, and in 1975, he obtained a Master of Education from Georgia State University.

On August 3, 1969, James was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Miss Delores Simmons. They were married for 28 blissful years before her untimely death.

James confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. He subsequently accepted the call to preach the gospel and was licensed by the Quarterly Conference on April 7, 1956. He served as pastor to several congregations in the South Georgia Annual Conference in the Sixth Episcopal District, including: St. James (Boston), Cray Chapel (Albany), Broaches Chapel (Ocilla), Holsey Chapel (Fitzgerald), and Williams Tabernacle (Moultrie).

Additionally, he served the South Georgia Conference in the following capacities: Treasurer, member of the Board of Social Concerns, and member of the Board of Christian Education. He was eventually promoted to Presiding Elder, faithfully serving both the Moultrie-McRae-Brunswick and the AlbanyThomasville Districts in excess of 18 years before retiring from the ministry.

James also retired from the Dougherty County School System in 1996 after having spent 30 years as a teacher and assistant principal. He began teaching in the public schools of Brooks County where he taught for seven years. For the duration of his teaching career, he contributed to the education of countless

elementary and junior high school students in the public schools of Dougherty County.

James was a member of several organizations, including: the NAACP, Georgia Association of Educators, National Education Association, National Elementary School Principals Association, Georgia Retired Educators Association, Albany State National Alumni Association and Georgia State Alumni Association. He was an avid football fan. His favorite teams were the Albany State Golden Rams and the Pittsburg Steelers.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his beloved wife and his youngest sister, Mrs. Claudia Hazel Tabor. He leaves to cherish his memory, five siblings: Mrs. Ora Hazel Bullock, Mrs. Nellie Hazel Thorne, Mr. D.C. Hazel, Jr. (Hilda), Mrs. Lucy Hazel Dunn, and Mr. Willie Rodgers Hazel, all of Albany; a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews, other relations, and friends, including a very special lady, whom he loved dearly, Ms. Chasander Crawford of Albany.

Rev. Lawrence Ulish "Baby Bill" McKinzie

Reverend Lawrence Ulish "Baby Bill" McKinzie, 86, transitioned on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Mississippi.

He was born October 8, 1933, to the late Ray McKinzie and Rosie Lee Cook in Duck Hill, Mississippi. His family later moved to Cotton Plant, Mississippi.

He graduated from Antioch High School in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, and served in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge in May, 1956, Rev. McKinzie attended the Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. On December 24, 1956, he married the late Beatrice Smith. They were married for fifty-seven years before her death, and to their union four children were born with two children departing life shortly after birth.

Continued from previous page Blue Mountain, Mississippi, and became a Steward in the church. He managed a gospel singing group called the Magnolia Jubilees for several years and traveled in and out of the state to gospel singing programs.

He was called into the ministry by God and preached his first sermon in September, 1973. Rev. McKinzie received his local preacher's license from the Oxford District of the East Mississippi Annual Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church on November 11, 1973 and served forty-two years as pastor to twelve different CME churches in seven counties in northeast Mississippi. He saved souls, married many couples, and touched the lives of so many. He was a full time worker at American Biltrite Corporation for thirty-five years before retiring at the age of sixty-five.

Rev. McKinzie leaves to cherish his countless memories: two children, Deborah (David) Cooper of Blue Mountain, Mississippi, and Michael (Kathryn) McKinzie of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sisters-inlaw, Bessie Bell McKinzie of New Albany, Mississippi, and Jimmie Dale Smith of Ripley, Mississippi; one brother-in-law, Harvey Lee Knox of Blue Mountain, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Adriana Cooper and Brandon McKinzie of Blue Mountain, Mississippi, and Mikayla McKinzie of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a special dear friend of the family, Sis. Anner Gatewood of Byhalia, Mississippi, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice McKinzie; two infant children, Sharon and Robin McKinzie; his parents, Ray and Rosie McKinzie; and siblings, Samuel Adam McKinzie, Pearline Townsend, Jessie Sherman, and Floyd McKinzie.
